A batch of TikTok creators all shouting "Head to Tilt.com" at once: a nine-year-old cash advance app climbs a little higher
What it is A US interest-free small cash advance app that charges $8 a month for a subscription, then upsells credit lines and credit cards.
Why it took off From mid-September to mid-October, a batch of #TiltPartner creator videos went out together. Add TV, Meta and comparison-site ads running all along, and the limit rose to $500. The Mexico version is also growing fast.
DHow you could ride it Don't follow this product. It needs capital, licenses and a big budget. What you can learn is packaging per-use fees as a fixed monthly subscription, and running a concentrated batch of creator videos over 2 to 5 weeks that open with a specific pain point and end on the same CTA.

Tilt is a US "lend you a few hundred bucks until payday" app. No interest, but a $8 monthly subscription. Its ratings have recently been climbing faster, and in the US App Store finance free chart it's been bouncing between #23 and #31. But it's not a new small product: its predecessor was Empower, founded 2016 years ago and backed by Sequoia, which turned profitable in 2022 years with 5M customers. This latest surge was bought with ad spend.
Oct 19, a video of "I really love shooting these ads"
Creator @em0n33y, who has 19,228K followers on TikTok, posted a short video tagged #TiltPartner in Oct, captioned plainly: "I love making these ads! This time I want to say how heavy an unexpected expense can feel." By Nov 6, it had 24K views.
It's not a one-off. From Sep 15 to Oct 19, a batch of creators posted Tilt partner videos together: @doctorbrandini (9-151M views), @pov_husband (1.58M followers, 9-21.7M views), @kaelyngutierrez (3.5M followers, 10-131M views), @nomasnahum (10-191M views). Nearly all ended with the same line: "Head to Tilt.com to get started."
There's an even smaller layer underneath. On Oct 12,1,784, a fan account, @its_juliette_vanessa, posted "I borrowed $500 on Tilt myself," then told people to sign up through her profile link. On Nov 4, an account posting about blindness wrote "Going blind or on disability? You can get money in minutes." These are referral links and affiliate commissions being pushed (TikTok, 11-06 to view).
What it is
Three products in one app, sold in layers:
- Cash advance: $10 to $500, no credit check, based on the income and spending in the bank account you connect. The site says first-time users average $96 and returning users average $178. Standard transfer is free; instant transfer charges a fee.
- Credit line: issued by partner bank FinWise, growing to about $1,000.
- Credit card: three Visa cards issued by WebBank, from the 2024 acquisition of Petal. The store page says "Spending power that grows with you."
Most of the money comes from subscriptions: new users get a 14-day trial, then $8 auto-billed monthly, plus instant transfer fees, credit card interest and card interchange. In August 2025, the company announced more than 3M paying subscribers (press release).
How much it grew
| Date | US iOS new ratings that day | US finance free chart |
|---|---|---|
| 10-28 | — | #28 |
| 10-30 | 155 | — |
| 11-01 | 401 | #23 |
| 11-04 | 322 | — |
| 11-06 | 324 | #31 |
App Store US, 10-28 to 11-06. Cumulative 473k ratings, with about 1,900 added in the last 7 days.
Compared with peers, this pace is mid-tier. Same-week new US ratings: Klarna 16,759, Chime 10,521, Grant (from Kikoff) 8,520, Dave 5,002, Brigit 3,605, Klover 3,007, Tilt 1,865.
The real fast growth is in Mexico. On Android, its Mexico version has 5.07M installs, adding 79k in the last 7 days, about 3 times the US version's 27k (Google Play, 11-06). The Mexico iOS version only launched in Sep 21, offering small loans up to 5,000 pesos.
Why it has survived nine years
The demand has always been there. 65% of Americans are broke at month's end, and 59% can't cover a $1,000 emergency (Tilt blog, citing CNBC). People in need come back several times a year, which keeps subscriptions sticky.
But the real barriers in this category are capital and distribution, not technology:
- Someone has to fund the lending. It raised about $175M in equity, and PitchBook records total funding of $1.78B, most of it debt facilities for lending.
- Acquisition runs on several channels at once: TikTok creators, Meta ads (on Facebook there's a "Get $10–$500 with a Tilt Cash Advance" ad sitting under a big page like The Dodo), 15 TV spots (iSpot), mailed credit card pre-approvals, referral bonuses, "best cash advance app" lists on comparison sites like Credit Karma, and long-tail search posts on its own blog titled "Need $250 now?"
- Licenses and bank partners: the advances are done in-house, but the credit line and credit card have to be issued by partner banks. Going global also runs on acquisitions: it bought Cashalo in the Philippines, and Blipay in Brazil in July of year 2026.
It says its edge is "looking at 250 real-time income and spending signals," but Dave, Brigit and Klover all approve using bank transaction data too, so that's no moat. The more concrete difference is price transparency: a flat $8, no tips and no late fees, unlike Dave and EarnIn's tip model.
What users complain about
The store page doesn't show it: the average rating is 4.85, and recent reviews are almost all five-star one-liners like "Love how easy it is to reschedule payment date," which looks like it's prompted inside the app (inference).
Reddit tells a different story. On r/cashadvanceapps, people say they get stuck on the confirmation page when trying to borrow again after repaying; on r/Bankruptcy people discuss what to do about money owed to Tilt in bankruptcy; on r/EmpowerBank people ask how to stop the monthly fee after they stop borrowing. It also faces a class action accusing its advance product of violating laws including the Military Lending Act. A court rejected its bid to move the case to arbitration, and as of October it hasn't settled (Bloomberg Law, Labaton).
Is anyone copying it?
This category is already crowded. Beyond the big names above there's Albert, FloatMe, Possible, Gerald and Credit Genie. In year 2026, between 7 and September, a new batch of similar small apps appeared on the App Store: Keystone, Rocco, Future Cash, Tavro. True Finance alone has 2,460 ads running on Meta. Mexico is crowded too: DiDi Finanzas, Klar, Stori and Kueski are all there, and DiDi Finanzas alone has 450k ratings.
If it were you
Bottom line: don't follow it. This is a lending business that needs capital, licenses and a big paid-acquisition budget. The category is packed and tangled in lawsuits, and a small team has no room to get in.
Who it fits: fintech teams that already hold a lending license or bank partnership and have capital behind them, looking to copy "subscription-based small advances" in an emerging market. Or affiliate marketers, since these apps pay generous referral bonuses and CPA commissions.
Who it doesn't fit: indie developers who are one or two people with no capital and no compliance team. Every dollar you lend is your own risk, and if regulation changes (the CFPB, or state laws on earned wage access), the model may stop working.
How to do it (the parts worth learning, not copying this product):
- Learn its subscription packaging: turn pay-per-use into a fixed monthly fee, which gives predictable revenue and retention. This works for non-fintech products too.
- Learn its creator playbook: over 2 to 5 weeks, drop a batch of videos at once, each opening on a specific pain point (not enough money at the supermarket checkout, the car breaks down), and ending with the same CTA. You can see this pattern in the charts.
- If you do content or traffic, you can take this category's affiliate commissions: write comparison posts like "cash advance apps like Dave," or run TikTok side accounts that carry referral links.
How to acquire users: at Tilt's scale it's full-channel paid acquisition. For followers, the only relatively cheap openings are long-tail search and small creators' referral links, but competitors are all doing the same.
When to get in: there's no window left. This category has been crowded in the US for a decade.
What would mean I'm wrong: ① a small team in one country (say a second-tier market in Southeast Asia or Latin America) grows to hundreds of thousands of users in six months on a partner bank's license without trouble, which would mean "switching countries" is wider open than it looks; ② regulators clearly carve earned wage advances out of lending rules without caps, lowering the bar.

Tilt: Cash Advance & Credit (iOS 1136397354) research report
In one line: Tilt is Empower Finance, founded in 2016 (Sequoia-backed, renamed Tilt in 2025 August), a US "interest-free cash advance + $8/month subscription" product with credit lines and credit cards layered on top. It's not a new product. It's a nine-year-old mid-sized fintech with 5M+ customers, profitable since 2022. It resurfaced because its ratings growth picked up: in 2026 9–October it ran a concentrated batch of #TiltPartner creator content on TikTok, and at the same time launched a new iOS app in Mexico.
1. How to read the data card (correcting first)
- The card merges two apps: the us row is the main app 1136397354 (listed 2017-05-09, 472,895 ratings); the mx row is actually a different app, "Tilt: préstamos rápidos" (id 6768448035, only listed 2026-09-21, 175 ratings). They got merged because they are the same product (appstore library app_profile / app_day, 2026-11-06).
- US Finance Top Free chart: 10-28 went from #28 → #11-01, 11-02 from #23 → #11-06 → #31, hovering between 23–31 throughout. Not a breakout (appstore.app_day).
- Daily new ratings: 10-29 only shows 35, most likely a sampling artifact from when the library started collecting; afterward it's 144–396,7 days totaling 1,865, about 265/day on average. The resurfacing reason says daily average rose from 37 to 300+, but that's mostly driven by this first-day artifact; the real trend is "flat with a slight rise."
- Peer comparison (US, new ratings over the last 7 days, appstore library 2026-11-06): Klarna 16,759, Chime 10,521, Grant (Kikoff) 8,520, Dave 5,002, Brigit 3,605, Klover 3,007, DailyPay 2,925, EarnIn 2,149, Tilt 1,865, Albert 1,501, Cleo 919, MoneyLion 393. In other words, within cash advance, Tilt is a mid-tier veteran, not the fastest grower.
- Android (googleplay library, 2026-11-06): US version finance.empower with 8.27M installs, +27,497 over the last 7 days; Mexico version finance.empower.mx with 5.07M installs, +79,146 over the last 7 days, more than the US, best rank on the Mexico free overall chart is #84. The Mexico Android version launched 2023-04, and the iOS version followed 2026-09.
- App Store average rating 4.85 (iTunes lookup); recent reviews are all 5-star short comments, such as "Love how easy it is to reschedule payment date", which look like they were prompted by in-app nudges.
2. Competitors
| Competitors | Platform | Launched | Scale | How it differs from Tilt |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Dave | iOS/Android | 2017 | iOS 935k ratings, Play 17.1M installs; already live | ExtraCash offers higher limits (up to the $500 tier), has a bank account, monthly fee $1+ plus tips; Tilt is a fixed $8 subscription |
| EarnIn | iOS/Android | 2013 | iOS 468k, Play 11.9M | Advances earned wages (EWA), relies on tips, no subscription; Tilt reads bank transactions and doesn't need employer timesheet integration |
| Brigit | iOS/Android | 2018 | iOS 586k, Play 10.6M; acquired by Upbound | Subscription $8.99–15.99, running 55 ads on Meta (metaads); the closest positioning |
| Klover | iOS/Android | 2019 | iOS 402k | Uses points and ad-watching to unlock advances; Tilt doesn't take this route |
| Grant(Kikoff) | iOS | 2023-12 | iOS 309k, 7 days +8,520 | A new aggressive player, growing more than 4× as fast as Tilt |
| MoneyLion | iOS/Android | 2015 | iOS 331k; acquired by Gen Digital in 2025 for about $1B | Broader product (investing, banking); advances are only one piece |
| Cleo | iOS/Android | 2019 | iOS 268k | Uses AI chat for personal finance; fined $2025M by the FTC in 17 |
| Chime (MyPay), Varo, Current | Bank-type | 2013–2016 | Chime iOS 1.65M | Advances are just a feature attached to a bank account and require payroll to be deposited there |
| Albert, FloatMe, Possible, Vola, B9, Gerald, Credit Genie, and many clones launched in the last 2026 years (Keystone, Rocco, Tavro, etc.) | iOS | 2016–2026 | from tens of thousands to 30+ ratings | Heavily commoditized; the category is already crowded |
| Mexico: DiDi Finanzas, Klar, Stori, Kueski | iOS/Android | 2019–2022 | DiDi Finanzas iOS mx 450k ratings | Tilt MX offers "up to 5,000 pesos in small loans", a newcomer in this market |
Bottom line: this category has many competitors, and Tilt was one of the first few to scale between 2016–2018.
3. Growth tactics (with evidence)
- TikTok paid creator collaborations #TiltPartner (confirmed, and the timing lines up): searching "TiltPartner" on TikHub shows a batch posted between 2026-09-15 and 10-19: doctorbrandini (9-151M views), pov_husband (1.58M followers, 9-21.7M views), kaelyngutierrez (3.5M followers, 10-131M views), romanlolo (3.35M followers, 10-13.1M views), nomasnahum (10-191M views), em0n33y (10-19, self-described as "doing ads"). The copy is uniformly "Head to Tilt.com to get started". In addition, 2026-03 a UGC creator produced sample videos for Tilt (willcreatesugc). This batch lines up in time with the rating growth and chart rise from late October to early November.
- Meta ads / creator-run paid promotion (confirmed): Facebook shows ads like "#Ad Get $10–$500 with a Tilt Cash Advance. Tilt is trusted by 5M+ customers…", one of which is posted on a large page like The Dodo (a post on facebook.com/thedodosite), and TiltHQ also runs video ads. Our metaads library doesn't track Tilt's pages, so we have no count of live ads.
- TV / streaming ads (confirmed): iSpot shows 15 TV spots for the Tilt/Empower brand (e.g., "Checkout Line: Cash Advance $10–$300", "The Groceries"). iSpot has redacted how much was spent.
- Direct-mail credit card pre-approvals (direct mail, confirmed): the website navigation includes "Respond to a mail offer" (apply.tilt.com/mail?utm_source=dm), a credit card acquisition method inherited from Petal.
- Existing-user referrals (confirmed): there's a Referral Program, updated 2026-01-29; when an invitee subscribes, both parties get a reward once an advance is taken within 30 days. Referral links like tilt.com/r/xxx are everywhere on Facebook and comparison sites.
- Comparison sites / affiliate SEO (confirmed): Credit Karma's "Best cash advance apps 2026", Upstart, and various "apps like Dave" lists all feature Tilt; Tilt's own blog publishes many long-tail search articles such as "Top 7 Cash Advance Apps" and "Need $250 now?".
- In-app rating prompts (inferred, not verified): recent reviews are mostly 5-star short comments that mention specific features, with an average of 4.85; sentiment on Reddit and WalletHub is clearly much worse.
- Overseas growth through acquisitions and new apps: entered Mexico in 2022 (Android 2023-04, iOS 2026-09-21); acquired Petal (US credit cards) in 2024 and Cashalo (Philippines, ~35k iOS ratings on the ph store); in 2026-07-01 acquired Brazil's Blipay (the press release says it brings 6M users, making it the fourth overseas market) (fintechfutures / Yahoo Finance 2026-07).
4. Why it took off
- Real need that never goes away: 65% of Americans are living paycheck to paycheck, and 59% can't cover a $1,000 emergency; "cash advance" gets 2.3M searches a month (Tilt's blog cites CNBC data). Users come in because they're short before the next payday, which happens several times a year, so subscriptions stick.
- How the money comes back: $8/month subscription (new users get a 14-day trial, then auto-billed) + rush transfer fees (e.g., $250 to get $8 instantly) + credit card interest, annual fees, and interchange. Profitable by 2022; 2024 had 2M paying subscribers, and in 2025 August passed 3M (Contrary, PRNewswire).
- Funding and capital: about $175M in equity raised; PitchBook lists total funding at $1.78B (mostly debt facilities that fund advances); Sequoia, Icon, and Nubank co-founder David Vélez have invested; in 2024 it made Forbes' Next Billion-Dollar Startups list. Having capital is what lets it run TV, creators, and direct mail at the same time.
- Why it resurfaced this time: the #TiltPartner creator push from 2026 9–October, plus the advance limit raised from $400 to $500 (per the official 2026 Q3 figures: first-time average $96, returning-user average $178).
5. Differentiation
- The stated differentiator is "looks at 250+ real-time income and spending signals, not credit scores," then walks users up to credit lines and credit cards ("Spending power that grows with you"). But Dave (CashAI, 180+ data points), Brigit, and Klover all do the same cash-flow-based approvals, so the approval method alone is not a moat.
- What is actually different: ① a product ladder: advance → credit line (issued by FinWise Bank) → 3 WebBank-issued Visa card (from the Petal acquisition), so the same user can be sold several times; ② fully transparent fixed pricing: $8 subscription, standard transfers free, no tips, no late fees, unlike EarnIn and Dave's tip models; ③ multi-country replication: Mexico, the Philippines, Brazil.
- These differences are not the main reason it took off. What let it survive is: getting in early (among the first in 2016), having the money to keep buying user acquisition, and a subscription-plus-profit unit economics model. This week's rise came from acquisition spend, not from a product change.
6. Visibility and copycats
- Already widely discussed: Contrary Research has a full teardown; the rename got coverage on PRNewswire, Print, and Creative Boom; Forbes lists; Credit Karma and other comparison sites write about it every year; Reddit's r/cashadvanceapps discusses it constantly; there's also a class action: Labaton is recruiting plaintiffs, and Bloomberg Law reported a court rejected Empower's request to move the suit to arbitration, alleging the EWA/advance product violates the Military Lending Act among other claims. As of 2026-10 it has not settled (settlementinsight).
- Copycats: the niche was already crowded. 2026 from 7 to September, a new wave of "Cash Advance" mini apps hit the store (Keystone 2026-07, Rocco 2026-08, Future Cash 2026-08, Tavro 2026-09, ClickNGo 2026-09, per the appstore library), and True Finance has 2,460 ads running on Meta (metaads). These are riding the whole category, not copying Tilt specifically.
7. What to borrow
- Wrap small advances in a "subscription": no interest, no late fees, which avoids the lending classification and rate caps. Money comes in through the subscription and rush fees. Then sell the same user up the ladder (advance → credit card).
- Creator campaigns share one template: "Head to X.com" plus a pain-point scene (supermarket checkout, car repair, covering a friend). Batches go out within the same 2–4 week, and the store charts show the shift.
- Re-run an older product in a new market: Mexico launches on Android first, iOS follows later. They also buy local lending companies to get licenses and users fast.
8. Still unclear
- In the rating-velocity spike, creator campaigns, in-app review prompts and Mexico can't be separated. The library only has data starting 10-28, so there's no comparison against September.
- Meta and TikTok ad counts and spend are unverified (the metaads library doesn't track Tilt).
- The impact of class actions and regulation (CFPB's stance on EWA, state laws) is unknown. The exact date the limit reached $500 is also unverified.
