A split-bill bot that doesn't need friends to install an app: Lightsplit ran in Taiwan's LINE group chats for six years before it shipped an iOS version
What it is A multi-person bill-splitting tool from Taiwan. The ledger lives in LINE, Telegram, and Discord group chats, and friends can log and settle expenses without installing an app. It now also has an iOS app and a subscription at NT$69 per month.
Why it took off Everyone in Taiwan uses LINE, and trips and group dinners are already arranged in group chats. One person adds the bot to the chat, and the whole group is using it. Bloggers wrote tutorials on their own for six years. In 2026, it added an iOS app, AI bookkeeping, and a subscription, and long-time users started paying.
CHow you could ride it Don't go head-to-head with bill splitting. Copy the mechanism instead. Find something a group must handle together and already discusses in group chats (dues, group buys, shared rent and utilities). Build it as a group chat bot plus a web page, with no app required for anyone. Get distribution for free first, then charge.

Lightsplit is a Taiwanese multi-person bill-splitting tool. The ledger lives in a LINE group chat, and friends tap a link to log expenses and see who owes whom. It only came to iOS at the end of July, and its ratings have been climbing lately, so it looks like a newly emerged app. In fact, it launched on LINE at the end of 2020, and it's backed by a developer who has run a paid bookkeeping app for 12 years. The rating jump comes from long-time users being funneled into the app and starting to pay for subscriptions.
Before Christmas 2020, an article on how to split costs for gift exchanges
2020 year Dec 23, Taiwan 3C blog 「瘋先生」 published a how-to: when a group goes out to play, buys group deals, or throws an event, someone has to be the "treasurer" who logs expenses, does the math, and chases money. It's a huge hassle. Now you just add the LINE Official Account @Lightsplit to the group and create a ledger. The post uses a Christmas gift exchange as its example and specifically notes: "This bill-splitting tool, developed by the Instant Bookkeeping team... requires no extra app download and no payment."
Two months later, in 2021 February 25, "Yu Guo 3C" wrote about using it to split camping costs. LINE TODAY reposted the article, saying: "Because Taiwanese people all use LINE, its invite-friends bill-splitting mechanism completely beats Splitwise."
Those two lines pretty much sum up its growth logic over these six years.
What it is
One expense ledger has several entry points: group bots on LINE, Telegram, and Discord, a web page, an iOS App Store app released in 2026-07-31, and integrations with ChatGPT and Claude.
- No waiting for friends to sign up: Create "virtual members" and start logging expenses right away. Friends tap a link later and claim their share.
- Many ways to split: Equal split, split by shares, or fixed amounts. Supports multiple payers, multiple currencies, and automatic currency conversion.
- Smart settling: Automatically reduces the group's debts to the fewest transfers, with one tap to remind people who haven't paid.
- AI: Snap a photo of a receipt or order screenshot to recognize items and amounts. In late October, it added "AI text splitting". You can say something like "Ramen ¥3000, I paid" in ChatGPT or Claude to log an entry (official site wording).
- Revenue: The free version has ads and limits on entries and AI scanning. Premium costs NT$69 per month or NT$690 per year (Taiwan App Store page).
The official site says "Groups in 30+ countries are using it worldwide," with pages in Traditional Chinese, Simplified Chinese, Japanese, Thai, and English.
How much it grew
| Date | Taiwan iOS cumulative ratings | Taiwan finance Top Grossing category chart |
|---|---|---|
| 10-28 | 56 | #99 |
| 10-31 | 56 (previously +0 per day) | — |
| 11-02 | 60 | #80 (best) |
| 11-06 | 67 (average 4.88) | #127 |
Taiwan App Store, 10-28 to 11-06. The Hong Kong store has only 1 ratings, and the US and Japan stores have 0. There is no native app on Google Play, so Android users go through LINE and the web.
The inflection point came around 11-01. In 10-30, the official blog published "AI text splitting," and in 10-31 it shipped version 1.3.0. The new version added an in-app rating prompt, but mass LINE messages were still what moved long-time users into the app, and outsiders can't see that. The scale is small, 7 ratings in 11 days, but the direction is right: it's shifting from a free mini-tool to a product that can charge a subscription.
Where users come from
Once one person in the group adds it, the whole group comes in. For each trip, there's a LINE group chat. The organizer adds @lightsplit to the group and posts a link, and everyone else taps it to start logging expenses, with no download and no signup. Every tutorial starts with this step. Starting in 2026 May, the bot can join as a group member directly. Typing "@Lightsplit 100 lunch" in the group records an entry (official blog, 05-15).
Taiwanese bloggers and LINE's own content channels wrote about it on their own for six years. Mad Mr. (2020) and Yu Guo 3C (reposted by LINE TODAY, 2021) came first, followed by bhuntr, popdaily, gonet, and Taitang Monthly. LINE's travel channel "Haohaowan" recommends it alongside Splitwise. On Instagram, there's a stream of "travel bill-splitting gadget" reels. On Threads, exchange students and food accounts in Taiwan and Hong Kong recommend it. I didn't see any paid-partnership disclosures (inferred to be organic, not verified).
The older product's foundation. The same developer's "Secsmoney 1 SecMoney" launched 2014 years ago, sold as a one-time purchase for NT$90. It has 9,292 ratings in the Taiwan store and has stayed between #10-28 and #11-06 on the finance paid chart (Taiwan App Store), mostly at #1 to #5. I haven't verified whether the two apps cross-promote each other.
SEO and AI directories. The official blog published long-tail articles densely in 2026, such as "LINE bill-splitting bot tutorial" and "Splitwise vs Lightsplit" (10-13), targeting Splitwise's free-tier daily entry limit (Splitwise's help center says the free version allows roughly 3–4 entries per day). It's also listed in the ChatGPT plugin directory, Claude Connectors, and the Discord App Directory. How much traffic those bring is unknown.
What didn't work: the English market. The founder posted on Reddit r/sideprojects with the pitch "No daily entry limits on the free tier (unlike the current market leader)," and got only 1 upvotes. Searching "lightsplit" on TikTok returns nothing, and no one has mentioned it on X in nearly 90 days.
Taiwanese users have complained too. On Dcard, one post titled "Stop using Lightsplit for bill splitting!" says the balances were calculated wrong, and some creators came out to explain it was a usage issue. I haven't verified whether it's a bug or user error.
Who it's competing with
There are many bill-splitting apps. In 2026, Taiwan also saw a wave of new travel bill-splitting apps that scan receipts with AI. Almost all of them require every person to install the app:
| Product | Scale | How it differs from Lightsplit |
|---|---|---|
| Splitwise | 29,429 iOS ratings on the US store, 35.8M installs on Play; only 411 on the Taiwan iOS store | The global leader. No Chinese-language support. The free version limits daily entries, and friends have to install the app. |
| Shared ledger Shareroo | 8,813 ratings on the Taiwan store, #24 on the finance Top Grossing category chart | The biggest bill-splitting app in Taiwan, aimed mostly at couples and families. Requires an app install. |
| Pizo group split | Released 2025-06, 118 ratings on the Taiwan store, #98 on the Top Grossing category chart | Built by a Taiwanese company. AI receipt scanning, pixel-art style, grows through Instagram unboxing posts. Requires an app install. |
| A dozen or more others, including One-Tap Split, Qiuwali, Split Cat, and the Split Tab | Each has 0–60 ratings | New apps launched after 2025-11. Require an app install. |
| Split Dragon Baby | Recommended in LINE TODAY and Facebook posts | The most direct competitor, and also a LINE group chat bot. Scale not verified. |
| LINE Pay Money "split the bill" | Big-company features | can only split one payment among people, no multi-entry ledger, no multi-currency |
App Store Taiwan and Google Play data, 11-06.
In Taiwan, on the "live inside the LINE group" path, Lightsplit was the first and is the most cited.
Can you copy it in another country?
The most natural way to follow is: find a market where one messaging app dominates and turn bill-splitting into a group bot. But several big markets are already taken:
- Japan (LINE): Lightsplit itself already has a Japanese site and Japanese IG (@lightsplitapp); there's also "TATEKA", built by an individual developer, whose site says "no install or sign-up required, just add the LINE friend", also install-free inside LINE.
- Thailand (LINE): KBTG, the tech subsidiary of Kasikornbank, launched the LINE bill-splitting bot "ขุนทอง" (KhunThong) years ago, helping you split bills, chase payments in the group, and even pay directly. A bank is doing this, so a small team can't beat it.
- WhatsApp (India, Latin America, Europe): SplitBot already does "type to log expenses in WhatsApp", and over the past 2026 years Reddit has seen several "I built a WhatsApp split-bill bot" posts. Also, WhatsApp's business API charges per message, so a free tool's cost structure would look worse (inference).
- South Korea (KakaoTalk): KakaoPay already has "정산하기" (settle up) for group chats; the big-platform feature covers it (inference, not verified one by one).
There's a more fundamental layer too: this business is slow. Lightsplit has ten years of app-making experience and an old product in the top five of the Top Paid chart, then spent six years building reputation for free inside LINE. Today its Taiwan Top Grossing chart rank still sits around #80 to #127. Splitting a bill once per trip is low-frequency, low-ticket, and subscriptions are hard to sell.
If it were you
C. A good mechanism to learn, but not worth copying as-is. "One person adds a bot to a group and the whole group converts" is a growth mechanism that really can be copied. But for bill-splitting, the group entry points in the big markets are already taken (Japan has TATEKA and Lightsplit itself, Thailand has the bank-built KhunThong, WhatsApp has SplitBot), and what's left is low-frequency and hard to monetize. One or two people working for a few months will struggle to see money.
Who it suits: people who already have users or a content channel in some messaging ecosystem, such as builders of LINE / Telegram / Discord community tools; or indie developers who just want a small, steady side project and can wait years to build reputation slowly.
Who it doesn't suit: people who want to see income within a few months; people who want to target the English market (Lightsplit's own Reddit post got only 1 upvotes, and Splitwise, Tricount, and Settle Up are all there); people who want to head-on build another one in Taiwan (it had a six-year head start, and searching "LINE 分帳" mostly returns it first).
How to do it: the thing worth copying is the mechanism, not the category. Find something that a group must use together and that already gets discussed in group chats, such as club dues, group-buy sign-up lists, shift scheduling, shared utility bills for roommates, or booking sports courts. Build it as a group bot plus a web page, and don't make anyone install an app. Get free penetration first, then build an app and sell subscriptions once there's volume. If you insist on bill-splitting, pick a place Lightsplit hasn't covered where the group chat app is dominant (for example Zalo in Vietnam, not verified whether anyone is building there), or a niche it does poorly (long-running roommate accounts, club dues).
How to get users: follow its playbook by writing local-language long-tail tutorials on "how to split bills / collect money in XX group", and get local travel and 3C bloggers to write how-tos. Every time the bot logs an entry or posts a settlement in a group, it's an ad for the other people there. When the leader tightens its free tier, immediately publish "XX alternative" comparison posts.
Is there a deadline? No rush. Bill-splitting is a year-round need, and this window won't suddenly close over one event. What's more, plugin directories for ChatGPT, Claude, and similar platforms are still empty, so getting in early means claiming the spot.
Signs you're wrong: ① Lightsplit's Taiwan Top Grossing rank holds steadily in the top 30, or its rating growth holds through December, which would mean old users are converting to subscriptions more than expected and the category deserves a re-evaluation; ② TATEKA or another LINE bill-splitting bot in Japan starts gaining traction on the Japan App Store, meaning the Japan spot is less open than it looks and you need to move fast; ③ conversely, LINE itself builds multi-entry logging and debt simplification into LINE Pay or groups, which would close this path for everyone.

Lightsplit 輕鬆分帳・旅遊記帳 (iOS id1531601106) research report
Research date: 2026-11-06. Storefronts checked: in the appstore library, Lightsplit only has chart records in TW (HK has 1 ratings, US/JP 0); comparables were checked across five storefronts (TW, HK, JP, TH, US) and the googleplay library.
One line
Lightsplit is not a new product that appeared three months ago. It is the LINE official account bill-splitting tool that the team behind Taiwan's long-established paid bookkeeping app 「秒速記帳 1SecMoney」 (same developer, 周秉賢 Ping-Hsien Chou; released 2014 years ago; 9,292 ratings in TW; consistently in the top 5 of the Finance Paid chart) built at the end of 2020. It has been growing for nearly 6 years on Taiwan's LINE ecosystem and bloggers' organic recommendations. 2026-07-31's native iOS app is this older product's next step outward: it adds Telegram/Discord bots, AI receipt scanning, ChatGPT/Claude connection (MCP), 9 languages, and subscriptions. The "accelerating ratings" we see in the library are an early signal of existing users being moved into in-app subscriptions, not a new hit.
1. Data
| Metric | Value | Source |
|---|---|---|
| First release date (iOS) | 2026-07-31 (the app id is from the 2020-era number range, so the ID was likely claimed that year and sat unpublished) | iTunes lookup |
| Current version | 1.3.1 (2026-11-06); 1.3.0 was released 10-31, adding "AI text splitting" and Siri/Shortcuts | iTunes lookup, appstore library |
| TW rating count | 10-28 is 56 items; before 10-31, it added 11 every day from +0,11-01 to 11-06, reaching 67 (live iTunes 68, average rating 4.88) | appstore library app_day |
| tw finance Top Grossing chart | 10-28 #99 → 11-02 #80 (peak) → 11-06 #127 | appstore library |
| subscription price | Premium NT$69/month or NT$690/year | App Store tw page |
| other stores | 1 ratings in hk, 0 in us/jp; the library only shows it charting in tw | iTunes lookup |
| Android | No native Play app (not found in the library); Android users go through LINE/web | googleplay library |
The inflection in rating growth falls between 11-01 and 11-02: it lines up with the official blog post about "AI text splitting" and the 10-30 release of 10-31 1.3.0, and the same day (11-02) it climbed to a peak of #80 on the grossing chart. The likely cause is that the new version added an in-app rating prompt, or that push notifications/LINE group broadcasts moved existing users into the app. I haven't verified which one it was.
II. Where it came from: timeline
- 2014: Zhou Bingxian launched "SecMoney 1" (paid app, NT$90), built around quick expense logging via a Notification Center widget. TW has 9,292 ratings; on the TW Finance Top Paid chart it has sat between #10-28 and #11-06 (ranging from #1 to #5), and in HK it has ranged from #7 to #15 (App Store data). That's the team and the existing user base behind Lightsplit.
- 2020-12-23: Taiwan's large 3C blog "Crazy Mr. Mad (mrmad)" published an article introducing the LINE bill-splitting tool Lightsplit. In its words: "This small bill-splitting tool, developed by the SecMoney team… needs no extra app download and costs nothing" (https://mrmad.com.tw/line-lightsplit).
- 2021-02-25: An article by "Yu Guo 3C" was reposted on LINE TODAY under the title "LINE bill-splitting bot Lightsplit, the best group bill-splitting tool so far". It says that because "everyone in Taiwan has LINE", the invite mechanism "completely beats Splitwise" (https://today.line.me/tw/v3/article/V608Yy).
- 2021–2025: Organic tutorials and posts kept coming: bhuntr, gonet, honestperson, popdaily, egoldenyears, the Taiwan Sugar monthly, another LINE TODAY article (9xZP3e), and LINE's travel channel "Good Fun", which recommended it alongside Splitwise (https://travel.line.me/article/T1jq0il236). On IG there were many creator reels (DLXbS5kzHYH, DQ1XBIrEhwA, DID1aEsTldO, C8dRlCJpCJp, etc.). On Threads, users in Taiwan and Hong Kong recommended it (@eurose.diary exchange student, @laymao.foodiehk, @foodnavigator_tw). On Dcard there were discussions and negative posts too, such as "Stop using lightsplit to split bills!" saying the balances came out wrong (dcard 255101681), and "Asking about Lightsplit bill-splitting problems" (254770815).
- About 2024-12 / 2025: The founder u/scott03333 posted "Lightsplit - A bill splitting web app with no download required" on Reddit r/sideprojects. The pitch targeted Splitwise's daily entry limit directly ("No daily entry limits on the free tier (unlike the current market leader)"). The post got only 1 upvotes, and the English market never took off.
- 2026-05: The LINE bot can join a group as a member, and in the group you can log an entry by typing
@Lightsplit 100 lunch(official blog 2026-05-15). It also supports personal and household bookkeeping (05-16). - 2026-06: A to-do list can be turned directly into a bill.
- 2026-07-31: Native iOS app launched.
- 2026-08-16: Tutorial for a custom Claude Connector; 2026-09-14: ChatGPT Plugin (searchable as Lightsplit in the chatgpt.com/plugins directory); the third-party agent platform WeMachines also lists its plugin.
- 2026-09-10: Discord bot tutorial (listed in the Discord App Directory).
- 2026-10-13: SEO comparison article "Splitwise vs Lightsplit"; 10-30: AI text splitting.
III. Competitors
| Product | Where | Launched | Scale | How it differs from Lightsplit |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Splitwise | iOS/Android/web | 2011 | US iOS 29,429 ratings; Play 35.8M installs; TW iOS only 411 ratings | The global leader, but no Chinese interface; since the end of 2023 the free version allows only 4 entries a day; friends have to download and sign up |
| Shared ledger Shareroo | iOS | 2019 (Japanese developer takaaki ono) | TW 8,813 ratings, +23 over 7 days, TW Finance Top Grossing #24 | The top bill-splitting/shared ledger app in tw, aimed at couples and households; requires installing the app |
| Settle Up | iOS/Android | 2013 | TW 1,160 ratings; Play 3.19M installs | Long-established foreign app; requires installing the app |
| Tricount(bunq) | iOS/Android | 2010 | Play 18.3M installs; HK 1,531 ratings | Main player in Europe, free with unlimited entries; requires installing the app |
| Pizo group split | iOS | 2025-06 | TW 118 ratings, Finance Top Grossing #98 | Made by a Taiwanese company; AI receipt scanning, pixel style; relies on IG and blogger unboxings; Dcard has a "Pizo vs Lightsplit" comparison |
| Travel Split / Minimalist Bookkeeping / Snap & Split / Qiuwali / Split Cat / Tab Calculator / AA Split / Iron Split, etc. | iOS | 2025-11 to 2026-10 | Each has 0–60 ratings | In 2026 Taiwan saw a large wave of new AI-receipt-scanning travel splitting apps, all requiring installation |
| Split Dragon Baby | LINE bot | Not verified | Recommended in LINE TODAY and Facebook posts | The most direct peer: also a splitting bot that joins LINE groups |
| LINE Pay Money "split the bill" | Big-company features | Has existed for years | Runs LINE POINTS rewards promotions | Only splits one payment among people; no multi-entry bookkeeping, cross-currency support, or debt simplification |
| Japanese "warikan" apps (Recopay, Tateca, etc.) | iOS | 2020–2026 | The largest in jp is Recopay, with 1,706 ratings | Japan has hundreds of small apps competing for the same need, and none has become a native LINE product |
Bottom line: there are many bill-splitting products, and a large wave entered in 2026. But in Taiwan, the path of "living inside the LINE group, with friends never needing to install an app" was taken first and is cited most by Lightsplit. The only comparable product I see among competitors is "Bill-Split Dragon Baby".
IV. Growth levers (where users come from)
- Viral invites through the LINE official account added to a group (confirmed): once one person in a group adds @lightsplit, the whole trip group gets pulled in, and others can log expenses just by tapping a link. The growth is built in. Every tutorial focuses on this step.
- Organic recommendations from Taiwan 3C and lifestyle bloggers (confirmed): mrmad (2020), Yu Guo 3C / LINE TODAY (2021), bhuntr, popdaily, and others, plus reposts through LINE's own content channels (LINE TODAY, LINE Travel). I didn't see paid-partnership labels, so it looks organic, but I haven't verified that.
- IG reels / Threads creators and everyday user word of mouth (confirmed): "travel bill-splitting gadget" content keeps showing up, and people naturally search for it around trips.
- The brand and user base of the older product SecMoney (partly confirmed): mrmad openly says it's the "SecMoney team"; SecMoney has 9,292 ratings in tw and ranks in the top 5 of the paid chart. Whether there's cross-promotion inside the app is unverified.
- SEO content sites (confirmed): lightsplit.com has multilingual blogs in Traditional Chinese, Simplified Chinese, Japanese, and English, and in 2026 it published a lot of long-tail articles like "LINE bill-splitting bot tutorial" and "Splitwise alternatives".
- AI platform directories (listing confirmed; traffic it brings unknown): ChatGPT Plugin directory, Claude Connector, WeMachines plugin directory, Discord App Directory, Telegram bot.
- Self-promotion on Reddit (confirmed, performed poorly): r/sideprojects got only 1 upvotes.
- Paid acquisition: no evidence found. A TikTok search for lightsplit returns nothing; x-radar shows 0 mentions on X in the last 90 days; the ad libraries don't track it.
Where the money comes from: Premium subscription (NT$69/month or NT$690/year, with no ads, unlimited entries, more AI scan quota, and export); the free version has ads. Public revenue figures: none found.
V. Why it took off
- It caught a local Taiwan trait: nearly everyone uses LINE, and trips and group dinners are already arranged in LINE groups, so "no need to get friends to download an app" is a real pain point. A LINE TODAY article from 2021 says the invite mechanism "completely beats Splitwise".
- It got a head start of about 6 years: it launched at the end of 2020, review articles accumulated over time, and today the top results for "LINE 分帳" on Google are mostly it.
- The leader gave up ground itself: at the end of 2023 Splitwise limited the free version to 4 entries a day, and it has no Chinese interface. Lightsplit's SEO articles aimed right at that gap.
- The 2026 wave was product expansion: a native iOS app, bots joining groups, AI receipt scanning and AI text splitting, MCP connections to ChatGPT/Claude, and multilingual support turned it from "a free LINE utility" into a product that can charge subscriptions. The rating acceleration in the library coincides with the timing of the 10-31 1.3.0 release.
- Behind it is an experienced indie developer: SecMoney has been around for 12 years, and the team understands iOS paid apps and the Taiwan market.
VI. Differentiation
The core differentiator is "native to messaging apps": the split-bill ledger lives inside a LINE group (also Telegram and Discord). Friends don't need to download anything or sign up, and you can create "virtual members" and start logging right away. Friends claim their own entries later. This is the main reason it took off. In Taiwan, every competitor (Splitwise, Shareroo, Pizo, plus a pile of new apps) requires everyone to install an app, so only this one spreads naturally through LINE groups.
AI receipt scanning and MCP are either "everyone has it" or ahead of the curve. They're useful for content marketing and AI directory exposure, but they aren't the main growth source right now. Hooking MCP into ChatGPT/Claude is early for the split-bill category, but I estimate few people use it (no data).
7. How many people know about it
Word of mouth in niche circles: Taiwanese travel and 3C circles know the product well (bloggers, LINE TODAY, Dcard, Threads, IG all cover it), but it hasn't been covered by tech media or VC press. X has 0 mentions. Revenue has never been disclosed. The English market barely knows it exists (Reddit has 1 upvotes, the US store has 0 ratings).
Copycats: there are similar products, but nobody openly admits to copying it. 分帳龍寶寶 (a LINE split-bill bot). A developer on the Dcard App board posted "Splitting overseas trip costs drove me crazy, so I built a no-install LINE split-bill tool" (dcard 261173694), taking the same "no install + LINE group" route. In the past 2026 years, Taiwan has also launched more than ten new AI travel split-bill apps (see the competitor table).
8. What others can learn from it
- In a market where one messaging app dominates, build the multi-person collaboration tool as a group bot plus a web page, not as an app everyone has to install. LINE maps to Taiwan, Japan, and Thailand; KakaoTalk to Korea; Telegram to Eastern Europe and the Middle East; WhatsApp to India and Latin America; Zalo to Vietnam. The mechanism you can copy is "one person invites, and the whole group converts."
- Use a free bot or web page to get penetration first, and only years later push a native app and subscriptions to convert long-time users into paying customers.
- Whenever a leader tightens its free tier (say, Splitwise caps free entries at 4 per day), publish targeted "XX alternative" SEO content.
- Get listed in the ChatGPT/Claude plugin directories early and treat them as a new distribution channel (effect not yet validated).
9. What I'm still unsure about
- How many friends and monthly active users the LINE Official Account has: not public, couldn't find it.
- Whether the rating acceleration came from in-app rating prompts or LINE broadcast referrals: not verified.
- Whether 秒速記帳 and Lightsplit cross-promote each other: not verified.
- Subscription revenue scale: unknown. The only relative signal is charting at 80–127 in the tw Top Grossing category.
- When 分帳龍寶寶 launched and how big it is: not verified.
- How much the negative Dcard reviews about "wrong calculations" matter, and whether it's a bug or user error (a creator's reel says it's a usage issue): not verified.
- The library starts at 10-28, so the curve from the launch in 8–October isn't visible.
