One phone replaces a €500 scoring machine: a small Czech team's dart app squeezes into an already crowded market with "free"
What it is A dart app: a phone is propped up in front of a standard dartboard, and the camera automatically recognizes every dart and works out the score. No hardware to buy.
Why it caught on Rivals either sell €500 hardware or lock phone scoring behind a paywall. This one makes scoring free and charges the least for online play. Dart groups and YouTube reviews spread it with the message "much cheaper."
CHow you could follow Don't follow in darts. Take this playbook (free core AI scoring, cheap paid online features, win the home market first, then go after English-language review channels) to niche sports that phone scoring hasn't saturated yet, like pool or archery.

Darteer lets you prop up your phone in front of a dartboard and it automatically recognizes every dart and works out the score. That part is free forever; online play costs €15.99 a year. It launched in 2026 in July, and in four months it has around 19K Android installs. Dart fans on Facebook groups and YouTube keep comparing it with paid rivals. It gets noticed mainly because of its price, but the category is crowded with hardware giants, official licensed apps and several indie developers. If you want to follow it, there's little room left in darts itself. What you can learn is the playbook.
A "much cheaper" post
Darteer hit the UK App Store only 12 days ago, in July 2026 23. A user in the Facebook group "Darts Advice, Tips, and Discussion." posted about it:
fantastic little app, £2 a month which includes online play. Dartsmind just cheaper. A whole lot cheaper lol
The post drew 28 comments, and almost everyone compared it with Dartsmind. Dartsmind was the first to do camera-based scoring, charges an annual fee (about $14.99 / £12.99), and requires extra coins for online matches.
A month later, on Sep 1,1,780, Penguin Darts, a UK channel with 1.99 subscribers, posted a review titled "The £500 OMNI Killer?" The OMNI is a camera-based scoring system sold by Target for about £1.99. The video description had just one line: "Darteer is a £500 a month AI auto-scoring app. Can it match the OMNI, or even beat it?" By November, the video had about 5,300 views.
Almost every post or video that mentions it talks about price.
What it is
It's made by Darteer.ai s.r.o. in Prague, which has only this one app. You prop a phone or tablet in front of an ordinary steel dartboard, calibrate once, and start throwing. An on-device vision model works out where each dart lands and what it's worth. No electronic board, no hardware. Game modes include 501 / 301, Cricket, Around the Clock and Shanghai. A second phone can connect over Bluetooth as a second camera, or act as a remote.

| Local multiplayer | Up to 10 players | ✓ |
| Online play (with video and voice), AI opponents, tournaments, cloud sync | — | €2.49 / month, €15.99 / year |
The price comparison site dartsautoscoring.com added it in Oct 25. Sorted by three-year total cost, Darteer comes to €48 for three years, in the cheapest tier. DartsOn, with nearly identical features, costs about €75 over three years.
How big is it really?
Not very big.
- iOS: After almost four months on the App Store, it has 32 ratings worldwide (10-28 had 31; in 7 days it added only 2 more), of which 16 are from the Czech Republic and 11 from Germany.
- Android is the main channel: Google Play installs rose from 10-29 at 16,517 to 11-06 at 19,126, adding 2,609 in a week. In the sports free chart it ranks #35 in Poland and #50 in Germany (11-06).
- Don't take the Top Grossing chart too seriously. On the iOS Sports Top Grossing chart it's #12 in Czechia, #19 in Hungary and #25 in Slovakia (11-06). These markets have a low bar: a few subscriptions a day can get you into the top 20, so it only tells you people are paying, not how much.
Why users pick it
The store reviews say it plainly:
- "Nejlevnější opravdu funkční!" (the cheapest dart scoring app that actually works) "Features other apps charge for are free here." (Czech store, 7-15)
- "Preis-Leistung überragend" (outstanding value for money) "Even if one dart blocks another, pulling them in order still scores it right." (German store, 9-15)
- "in der Preisklasse (jährlich<20€) mit Abstand die beste App" (by far the best app in the under €20/year bracket) (German store, 8-20)
- "I have no idea how this app isn't talked about much! It's on par with Dartsmind if not better." (UK store, 8-08)
There are problems, mainly two kinds. One is recognition: "Barely recognises the darts, keeps needing manual fixes, deleted it" (German 1-star, 10-18). A UK user also said that after one update, each round only registers the first dart and auto-logs the other two as 0 (9-03). The other is finding online opponents: "Community is still small, hard to get matched" (Czech store, 8-15). There are also Reddit r/Darts complaints that you can't try online games without buying a subscription.
The second is the worse one. Pro is built around online play, and online play needs an opponent pool. An opponent pool is exactly what the established DartCounter and the newcomer Autodarts have the most of.
Where users come from
I couldn't find any sign of paid acquisition (no related TikTok videos, nobody discussing it on X). The visible sources are all within the dart community:
- Czech local creators got there first. The developer is Czech. In the month of launch, the Czech channel "SVĚT ŠIPEK | MATY" posted a video titled "darteer – the Czech app every dart player must try!", with about 5,400 views. Half of the iOS ratings come from Czechia.
- UK dart YouTube. Besides Penguin Darts, To Throw First ran three videos on it, with price-led titles: "26p a month auto-scoring app", "Move Over Autodarts Lens", plus a three-way comparison, one of which has 5,241 views. One channel posting three videos on a new app in a row looks like a partnership, but I didn't see any sponsorship disclosure (unverified). Penguin Darts' video carries a product affiliate link, but it's for a dartboard, not this app.
- Word of mouth in Facebook groups and on Reddit, which is the post at the top of this section.
- Price comparison sites. Sorted by three-year total cost among the 35 systems listed on dartsautoscoring.com, it wins easily.
- Store search (inferred). The title is literally "Automatic Dart Scorer", targeting the phrase users would search.
A few videos with a few thousand views each, plus a few groups, brought in nearly 20,000 installs on Android. Dart players cluster together and often ask in groups "what do you score with?", and that matters a lot.
Who it's competing with
It's crowded. dartsautoscoring.com lists 35 auto-scoring systems, 13 of which need only a phone or tablet.
| Product | Scale (around 11-06) | Compared with Darteer |
|---|---|---|
| DartCounter(Target) | iOS UK 37,471 ratings, #1 in UK Sports Top Grossing; Play 2.58M installs | The leader in manual scoring plus online play; auto-scoring requires the £500 Omni hardware |
| Dartsmind | iOS German 3,814 ratings; Play 360k installs | The pioneer of phone scoring; scoring costs an annual fee, and Darteer was built to undercut its price |
| Winmau Autodarts(Lens) | Launched 2026-08 / 09, already 59,440 installs on Play, +4,585 in a week | Official PDC partnership plus a hardware brand. Free phone scoring is capped at 30 games every 5 days. It grows an order of magnitude faster and is the biggest threat |
| DartsOn (Estonia) | iOS UK 398 ratings; about 20k installs on Play | Nearly the same features (on-device recognition, dual cameras, offline). Free with a limit, about €75 for three years |
| Hardware such as Scolia and Target Omni | €500–935 | Several cameras mounted on the board for higher accuracy (Scolia claims about 99.5%). Expensive, and needs installation |
Darteer has no feature exclusive to it: dual cameras, offline and on-device recognition are all matched by DartsOn. What's unique is only the pricing combination: unlimited free scoring, with the cheapest Pro. This spot is open to anyone. Autodarts has PDC backing and could lift its free 5-game cap at any time; DartsOn only needs to change its free allowance to catch up.
If it were you
C: Worth studying, but don't copy it in darts. If you want to build a dart scoring app, your competitors are Autodarts, a big player with official licensing; DartCounter, with millions of legacy users; and three or four indie developers with the same features. Even Darteer itself can't fill its online matches. What you can take is its playbook: find a niche hobby where hardware is expensive and existing apps charge for it, make the core AI scoring free, and let "so much cheaper" become something users say for you.
Who it suits: a team of 1–2 people who can build on-device vision models (local recognition, calibration, occlusion handling). Ideally you play the niche sport yourself, or speak a minority language and can first build a foothold in your home community.
Who it doesn't suit: people who want to build for darts, or who want English as the main market; people counting on online play and community subscriptions without a way to cold-start an opponent pool; people who can only wrap LLM APIs and can't do real-time recognition on-device.
How to do it: pick a project that hasn't been filled by phone-camera solutions yet. Pool (pocket detection, shot tracking), archery (scoring), disc golf and table tennis serve training are all worth a look (inferred; check the stores first to see which is still empty). Scoring itself is free, unlimited, and requires no sign-up. Charge only for what needs servers, such as online matches, tournaments and cloud data, with a yearly price under €20. Get accuracy solid first, since nearly all one-star reviews are "doesn't recognise it".
How to acquire users: first find local niche YouTubers and Facebook groups, and have a native-language review video out in the launch month. Then find UK or US review channels for that sport and get their titles to hinge on price ("The £2 £500 killer?"). Actively show up on that sport's price comparison sites and in "which app do you use" threads. Use feature keywords in the store title, like "Automatic Pool Scorer".
When to get in: on-device vision scoring is being built one sport at a time. For darts, Dartsmind, DartsOn and the Autodarts Lens phone scoring all launched 2024 to 2026 years ago (inferred: the window is about two years). If you pick a sport, go live within 6 months, before the big brands in that sport launch their own official apps.
Signs you've got it wrong: ① for the sport you picked, a search for feature keywords already returns three or more free, working camera-scoring apps; ② three months after launch, local groups and review videos have brought in fewer than a few thousand installs, meaning the community isn't dense enough or people don't care about scoring; ③ look at Darteer itself: if, after Autodarts lifts its free-game limit, its weekly Google Play growth drops from 2,000+ to a few hundred, price alone can't hold for long, and your project needs something beyond price too.

One line
Darteer.ai s.r.o., a small team in Prague, makes a phone-camera dart scoring app: you prop your phone up facing the board, and a vision model reads each dart and scores it. Camera auto-scoring is free forever, no account needed, works offline. Pro (online play with video and voice, AI opponents, tournaments, cloud sync) is €2.49/month or €15.99/year. 2026-07 on the store (iOS 7-11, Play 7-05).
Verdict
It works not through paid acquisition and not through technical lead, but through price positioning. Competitors either sell hardware (Scolia, Target Omni, Autodarts X at €400–900), or lock phone-camera scoring behind a paywall (Dartsmind about $14.99/£12.99 a year; Autodarts Lens free accounts get only 5 games every 30 days; DartsOn's free tier is capped too). Darteer was the first to make unlimited camera scoring free, charging about £2 a month only for online play. In the darts fan community, that price gap is itself the hook ("Dartsmind just cheaper. A whole lot cheaper", "The £1.99 OMNI Killer?"). Users come from word of mouth and creator reviews in two circles: the Czech scene (the developers are Czech) and UK darts YouTube and Facebook groups.
But the scale is small. On iOS globally it has about 32 ratings and has stalled. Most of the activity is on Android (about 19k installs, +2,609 in the last 7 days). It ranks on the sports Top Grossing charts in several Central European countries (Czech Republic 12), but that's because the bar in those countries is very low. It is not evidence that the app is earning much. Winmau's official Autodarts app, launched 2026-09, has built-in Lens phone scoring and is growing an order of magnitude faster. The moat is being squeezed by the big players.

Czech Top Grossing #12: the data card gives no revenue benchmark for other apps on the same chart. The Czech iOS sports Top Grossing bar is very low, and a few subscriptions a day can be enough to reach the top 20, so this shows people are paying, not how much.

Verdict: it's not that there are no competitors, it's that the space is crowded. dartsautoscoring.com lists 35 systems, 13 of them phone/tablet-based. Darteer has nothing unique on features (DartsOn also does two cameras, on-device inference, offline). What's unique is the price combo: unlimited free scoring plus the cheapest Pro.
Growth channels
- Czech creators and community (confirmed): YouTube channel "SVĚT ŠIPEK | MATY" posted the video "darteer – česká aplikace, kterou musí vyzkoušet každý šipkař!" with about 5,391 views, 4 months ago (the month of launch). Czech Republic has the most iOS ratings (16/32). The Facebook page @darteerai posts in Czech.
- UK darts YouTube reviews (videos confirmed; whether they were paid partnerships is not verified): Penguin Darts, "The £1.99 OMNI Killer? (Darteer tested)", about 5,293 views (2 months ago). To Throw First posted three in a row: "Is Your Darts Maths Bad? Try This 26p A Month Auto Scoring App!" (819 views), "Move Over Autodarts Lens | Darteer Just Got Better! Dual Camera And Remote Features!" (5,241 views), and "I Tested 3 Darts Scorers…Autodarts Lens Vs Darteer Vs Target Omni". Three videos about one new app in the same channel, all leading with price, look like promotion, but no clear sponsorship disclosure was found.
- Facebook group word of mouth (confirmed): in the group "Darts Advice, Tips, and Discussion." (2026-07-23 members), a user posted: "fantastic little app, £2 a month which includes online play. Dartsmind just cheaper. A whole lot cheaper lol". It got 9 reactions and 28 comments, and the comments compare it with Dartsmind.
- Reddit r/Darts (confirmed mention): in the thread "All the Auto Scoring mobile Apps worth subscribing to…", someone wrote: "Darteer… Very accurate but they don't let you try online without buying a subscription".
- Third-party price comparison site (confirmed): dartsautoscoring.com 2026-10-25 lists Darteer alongside Autodarts, Dartsmind, and Scolia; sorted by three-year total cost, Darteer (€48) lands in the cheapest tier.
- Store search / ASO (presumed): the title "Automatic Dart Scorer" directly targets the keyword "dart scorer". It ranks high in the Android sports Top Free charts in Poland and Germany, which suggests some organic search traffic. No hard evidence.
- Paid acquisition: no evidence found (a TikTok search for "darteer" returned no relevant videos; 0 posts in our X corpus. Meta and TikTok ad libraries only track products on our list, so not finding ads doesn't mean none were run).
Why it's working
- The price position is sharp. Competitors lock phone-camera scoring behind a paywall or hardware. Darteer makes scoring free and sells Pro for only €15.99/year, and users spread it themselves with lines like "way cheaper than Dartsmind" and "the £1.99 Omni killer" (Facebook groups, Penguin Darts video titles).
- The darts fan community is tight-knit and finds tools through YouTube and Facebook groups. A few reviews with 5k views can bring thousands of installs (about 19k on Android in 4 months).
- The developer is in the Czech Republic. They locked in the home market first (Czech-language creator videos, and about half the iOS ratings come from Czech users), then used a UK YouTuber to get into the English-speaking market.
- Timing: by 2025–2026, vision models were accurate enough (the vendor claims 98%). "One phone instead of a €500 rig" became a hot topic in the darts community. Autodarts, DartsOn, and Dartsmind all launched phone-based scoring that same year, and it rode that wave of attention.
Differentiation
Differentiation comes down to one thing: unlimited camera auto-scoring is free forever, no account needed, and online play and other Pro features are the cheapest in the category. On features (two-device setup, offline mode, on-device inference, multiple game modes), it's basically the same as DartsOn and Dartsmind. The price gap is why it spreads: almost every post and video that mentions it is about price. But that isn't a moat. Autodarts has PDC backing and can cut prices on the free 5 games and hardware whenever it wants. DartsOn can also open up its free tier. Users also report that they "can't find opponents online randomly," which shows that the online play it wants to monetize through Pro lacks network effects. That's exactly where DartCounter and Autodarts are strong.
How visible it is
It circulates in small circles: a few thousand views on darts-fan YouTube, Facebook groups, r/Darts, and one price-comparison site. No public revenue, no press coverage, no discussion on X.
Copycats
I didn't find anyone directly copying it. Its peers (DartsOn, Dartroom, AstroDarts, Darts Score Handsfree) mostly built their own versions around the same time.
What to borrow
- In a niche hobby where hardware is expensive and existing apps charge, make the core AI feature free and charge only for social or online features. Let the price gap become the marketing message.
- Open your home-country market first, especially a smaller language (local creators plus local Facebook groups), then get vertical UK YouTubers to review it to reach English-speaking audiences. It costs very little.
- Actively get third-party price-comparison sites to list you. In "total three-year cost" comparisons, you win by default.
- This playbook transfers to other niche sports that use cameras for scoring or counting (pool, disc golf, archery, table tennis training, and so on).
Still unclear
- iOS revenue scale: the Czech Top Grossing chart's 12-place cutoff is very low, and the real subscriber count is unknown. The 184–192 places on the Android Top Grossing chart are aggregated, so they're not a useful reference.
- Whether the UK YouTuber videos were paid partnerships.
- Which countries the Android installs come from. The charts suggest Poland and Germany are near the top, but the data has no per-country install numbers.
- iOS ratings are noticeably lower than Android's (32 against about 19k installs). I can't tell whether that's fewer iOS users or weaker prompts for reviews.
- How long its growth can hold up against Autodarts' official app.
