Nobody used it in the US; in Brazil it hit #11 on the social chart: Yankee won with a hundred small creators, not the product
What it is A "do-everything" social app that crams in a feed, short video, DMs, a Discord-style community, and an AI assistant. Free, built by a Brazilian team in Boston.
Why it took off It didn't catch on in the US, so they switched to Brazil, paid dozens of small creators to push near-identical copy on TikTok, used big accounts with verified badges as endorsements, and sold the pitch "has everything, feels like Orkut, no pressure." Brazil's social chart has a low bar, so it climbed to #11. The reviews are suspiciously uniform.
CHow you could follow Don't copy this social product; copy its cold-start playbook. Pick a market like Brazil or LatAm that's hungry for new social apps and has cheap creators, push a single theme through a batch of nano-creators, have one or two big accounts run "first verified" features as soft endorsements, and add scarcity around claiming usernames and badges.

Yankee is a "do-everything" social app built by a Brazilian team in Boston. It spent months in the US and only collected 41 ratings in the US store. In late October it switched to Brazil, and over two weeks dozens of Brazilian small creators pushed it on TikTok with nearly the same copy, and it climbed to #11 on Brazil's App Store free social chart. The product itself has nothing unique. What's worth taking is the cold-start playbook in Brazil. As for the product, I wouldn't recommend following it.
One sentence, dozens of accounts
On Oct 23, 2026, a Brazilian TikTok account with 20K followers, @brunittaborg, posted a video with a single caption: "Ela é incrível, jurooo! Baixem no App Store ou play store 👉🏻 Yankee" ("She's amazing, I swear! Download it from the App Store or Play Store 👉🏻 Yankee"). The video got 100K views (TikTok, 11-06).
Over the next week, videos of the same kind appeared in batches. On October 29, @_karinastelag (106 followers) posted: "A rede social do momento é a Yankee. Todas as redes em um só lugar! Vem conhecer @Yankee" ("The social network of the moment is Yankee. All the networks in one place! Come check out @Yankee"). On October 31, @erikamartinsfranco (2k followers) posted the exact same line. Others wrote "Vim fazer amigas e acabei conhecendo a Yankee" ("I came to make friends and ended up discovering Yankee"), and "já corre lá garantir o seu @" ("hurry and go claim your @").
Most of these accounts have a few dozen to a few thousand followers, and single videos range from two hundred to twenty thousand views. The copy is uniform, the posts cluster between 10-24 and 11-05, and several account names include "ugc" outright. This is a classic case of bulk-bought UGC, and possibly "do a task for a reward" as well. Which it is can't be told from the outside.
How big it really got
| Metric | Metric | Sources |
|---|---|---|
| App Store ratings, all stores | 207 (10-28) → 1,009 (11-06), +712 in 7 days | App Store data by store |
| Brazil specifically | 192 → 941, 93% of total | Same as above |
| US ratings | 41 | App Store page, 11-06 |
| Brazil social Top Free chart | #11 on 10-28, then bounced between #11–#23, and on 11-06 returned to #11 | App Store charts |
| Brazil overall Top Free chart | Occasionally in the top 200 (peak #194 on 11-06) | Same as above |
| Google Play installs | 25,251, +19,076 in the last 7 days | Google Play,11-06 |
| Self-reported | "55,000 new users, 37,000 DAU" | Yankee's LinkedIn, unverified |
Two of these numbers deserve a question mark.
First, the three days when ratings grew fastest, 10-30 to 11-01 (83, 194, 169 new ratings), coincided with its Brazil social chart rank falling from #11 to #17. Ratings doubled while the rank slipped, which suggests the ratings came mostly from asking existing users, not from new downloads (inferred).
Second, the ratings are too good to be true. The App Store page shows an average of 4.99 (Brazil, 11-06). Of the 729 written reviews I could pull for the Brazil store, 726 are 5 stars and 3 are 4 stars, with none at 1–3 stars. Brazil has only 941 ratings in total, and 77% of them have text, while normal apps usually have under ten percent. The content is also highly repetitive: "TO AMANDO O APP!!!", "Eu tô simplesmente amando", "Melhor rede social". This is likely organized solicitation of positive reviews, possibly with rewards, though I have no direct evidence.
The company says 37,000 DAU and 55,000 new users, with DAU at 67% of total. A newly launched social app rarely achieves that, so don't take these figures at face value yet.
What it is
A social app that wants to hold everything: a feed, Stories, short video, DMs, live streaming, and a community feature called Crowds modeled on Discord (text channels, voice rooms), plus an AI assistant, Yuki, which claims to manage your email, calendar, and shopping. The store page sells timeline ordering, no ad tracking, and profile customization. It's free with no in-app purchases and has never appeared on the Top Grossing chart. The developer is Yankee AI, Inc. According to Brazilian startup outlet Not Journal's September report, it raised a seed round of about R$1.2M.
It spent a long time preparing for the US. The official TikTok account teased a "March US launch" back in February, opened a private beta in August (invite code BETA100, with the first 1,000 users getting a Founding Member badge), and in 8 and September it was also recruiting US UGC creators. The result: the US store has only 41 ratings so far.
What Brazilian users are actually buying
Almost nobody mentions AI. The phrases that keep showing up in creator videos and reviews are: "has everything," "like Orkut" (Orkut was Google's social network from 2004 that was huge in Brazil for nearly a decade, and many Brazilians miss it), and "chill vibe." One five-star review from Nov 4 put it bluntly: "sem performance, sem ia, sem o peso que as outras redes sociais trazem" (no performance, no AI, none of the pressure other social networks bring). Another video said it "has the nostalgia of Orkut and Twitter, and the look of TikTok and Instagram" (@so.phia33,10-30).
The AI assistant Yuki is pitched to investors (LinkedIn, MIT, NVIDIA Inception). Brazilian users come for "new" and "nostalgic."
Brazilians have a track record of jumping on new social networks. In 2024, X was banned in Brazil, and Bluesky gained several million Brazilian users in a week. The Brazilian App Store social charts are also easy to crack: a few hundred ratings and tens of thousands of installs can get you into the top 15.
Swap in badges, prop up numbers with sponsored articles
Micro-creators do the volume, big accounts do the prestige. On Nov 4, the entertainment column of Jornal de Brasília, a newspaper in Brasília, ran a piece titled "Vagner Carvalho is among the first Brazilians certified on the new social network Yankee." Vagner Carvalho is a photographer from Rio Grande do Sul with 2.6M TikTok followers. The whole article is about how he "quickly got his verification badge," and it ends by asking, "Will Yankee be the next social network to conquer Brazil?" This reads like paid placement (inferred).
Badges are Yankee's main hook for pulling people in: beta badges, verification badges, creator badges. There are even TikTok tutorials titled "how to get Yankee's two badges." Then in Oct 29 the official account ran a "free stickers" promotion: download, sign up, and claim them in settings.
Same pitch, why didn't others take off?
It's not the only one trying to build a "Brazilian-owned new social network":
| App | Positioning | Launched | Rating |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ginza: Rede Social do Orkut | Direct Orkut clone | 2026-06 | 5 |
| Paçoca: rede social brasileira | "100% Brazilian social network" | 2025-12 | 67 |
| Yankee | Has everything + Orkut nostalgia | 2026-07 | Brazil 941 |
Ratings from the App Store, 11-06. Apple itself puts Ginza and Paçoca in Yankee's "You Might Also Like" section. All three pitch nearly the same thing; the difference is that only Yankee paid creators to seed it. The features don't separate them. The go-to-market does.
Few people have looked at it: Brazilian TikTok and Instagram creator circles and two small Brazilian media outlets have covered it, while English tech media, X, Product Hunt, and Hacker News have not discussed it. We also found no clear copycats.
If it were you
C: Learn the playbook, don't follow the product. Building a do-everything social network is one of the hardest businesses for a small team. You need network effects, you have to be free without monetizing, and you have to keep burning cash to survive, and Yankee's retention hasn't been proven. Social apps that get a flood of trial users usually fall off within two or three weeks.
Who it suits: teams that already run a community, social, or "make friends" app, find customer acquisition in the US or Europe too expensive, and want to cold-start in a new market, especially those who can write idiomatic Portuguese or Spanish copy.
Who it doesn't suit: anyone trying to build a "new Instagram" from scratch, or indie devs without funding who need the product itself to earn money. Social network revenue comes after scale, and this playbook only buys the first wave of trials.
How to do it: don't copy the product, copy the cold start. Pick a market that is hungry for new social apps, has low chart thresholds, and has cheap creators. Brazil is the ready example, and Spanish-speaking Latin America is worth testing next. Yankee already appears in the lower ranks of social charts in 20 Latin American countries since 11-05. Reframe the story for local sentiment: in Brazil it's Orkut, and in another country you need a different story. Doing a small, focused product well (interest groups, local meetups, nostalgic profile pages) is more realistic than building "has everything."
How to acquire users: follow its formula of dozens or hundreds of nano and micro UGC creators posting videos on one shared theme, one or two million-follower accounts running "first certified" sponsored pieces, plus scarcity hooks like "claim your username" and "Founding Member" along with a badge system. Don't copy the uniform five-star reviews. Having zero negative reviews across 729 entries stands out, and Apple will eventually treat it as rating manipulation.
When to get in before it's too late: this playbook has no deadline, but the heat behind this wave of "new social networks" in Brazil is time-limited. If you want to ride the buzz Yankee created, you need to move before it fades, that is, within the next two or three weeks.
Signs you've misread it: (1) By late November, Yankee is still holding the top 20 of the Brazil free social chart, and reviews start to include real negative feedback and feature complaints. That would mean people are actually using it, retention may be real, and "do-everything + nostalgia" could be worth a serious look in Brazil. (2) Conversely, if it drops out of the top 50 social charts by December, the playbook has only bought two weeks of hype, and copying its cold start should be discounted accordingly.

Why Yankee (iOS id6752715457) took off
Research date 2026-11-06. Data comes from our appstore / googleplay libraries (agent-im machine), Apple lookup, TikHub (TikTok), and Jina web search. Anything unverified is marked "unverified."
One line
Yankee is a "do-everything" social app built by a Brazilian founding team in Boston (Yankee AI, Inc.): one app with a feed, Stories, short video, DMs, Discord-style communities (Crowds), livestreams, and an AI assistant, Yuki. It didn't take off in the US. In late October it pivoted to Brazil, where a large group of micro and nano UGC creators posted nearly identical copy across TikTok and Instagram, and paid placement like Kátia Flávia's column plus "verification badges" pulled in users. It reached #11 on Brazil's free social chart. The App Store ratings were very likely produced by coordinated effort: 729 text reviews, all 4–5 stars, none at 1–3 stars.
1. Data: how far it went
- App Store rating count (all storefronts, our library): 2026-10-28 207 → 11-06 1,009,7 days, +712 new. The additions cluster from 10-30 to 11-01 (83 / 194 / 169), with another wave on 11-05 and 11-06 (50 / 105).
- Brazil is the overwhelming majority: br ratings went from 192 (10-28) to 941 (11-06), 93% of the global total. Portugal has 37, and the US has only 41 (Apple lookup us, 11-06).
- Charts: br social free chart #10-28 has already reached #11, then bounced between #11 and #23, and 11-06 returned to #11; the br overall free chart occasionally reached the top 200 (10-28 #168,11-06 #194). The number of countries where it charts grew from 8 to 24 (since 11-05), mostly in the lower ranks (#30–50) of Spanish-speaking Latin American social charts. Kuwait's overall free chart has it at #33 and social at #1, but with only 11 ratings there, a small market with a low bar.
- An odd detail: from 10-30 to 11-01, ratings more than doubled while the Brazil category rank fell from 11 to 17. That suggests the rating wave came mainly from asking existing users for reviews, not from new downloads pushing it up the charts (inferred).
- Google Play (our library): com.yankee.foretheist, 25,251 installs, +7 in the last ~19,076 days, listed since 2026-08-05.
- Self-reported (LinkedIn / TikTok): "Less than two weeks ago we had 2,200 users, now 35,000, with 26,000 active"; then "55,000 new users, 37,000 DAU, and only two weeks into a global closed beta"; and TikTok announced it had "passed 11-04 50,000 new users." Sources: linkedin.com/company/yankeesocial, tiktok.com/@yankeeapp. A DAU-to-total-users ratio of 67% is unusually high for a new social app; unverified.
- Revenue: free, with no in-app purchases (Apple lookup shows no IAP info), and it has never appeared on the grossing chart. It doesn't earn money now; it's burning through its angel round (Not Journal reported about R$1.2M).
- Release date: Apple lookup gives the first release as 2026-07-31 (the data card says 2026-01-09, likely an early record or TestFlight; go with lookup). On TikTok, 2026-02 was already teasing a "March US launch," and 8-09 opened a Closed Beta (invite code BETA100, the first 1,000 people get a Founding Member badge).
2. Competitors: who else is doing the same thing
For the "one app for all social" + "new Brazilian social network" category, competitors fall into two groups.
| Competitors | Where | Launched | Scale | Difference from Yankee |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Instagram / TikTok / X / WhatsApp | big tech | Already live | hundreds of millions of users in Brazil | Yankee's pitch is "fold them all into one" + timeline ordering, "no algorithm, no fighting", which is itself a counter-positioning against these platforms |
| Discord | big tech | 2015 | Over 100 million globally | Crowds (text / voice channels + community) basically copies Discord, just wrapped in a mass-market social app |
| Bluesky / Threads | big tech / open source | 2023 | 2024-08 When X was blocked in Brazil, Bluesky gained several million Brazilian users in a week | There's precedent for Brazilians "moving house en masse to a new social network"; Yankee doesn't rely on a political event, it relies on creators seeding it |
| status - sims em rede social(WishRoll) | iOS | 2024-10 | br 46,556 rating, social chart rank about 33 (library, 11-06) | AI characters let you play at "fake social"; Yankee is real-people social, AI is only an assistant |
| Noplace | iOS | 2024 | US Gen Z briefly hit #1 | Same MySpace / nostalgia + highly customizable profile angle; in Brazil Yankee swapped it for "Orkut nostalgia" |
| Yope | iOS | 2025 | $12.3M seed round | Only private small friend groups; Yankee is open and does-everything |
| Ginza: Rede Social do Orkut(Kraftwire) | iOS | 2026-06-10 | 5 ratings | Directly targets an Orkut recreation; Apple listed it alongside Yankee under "You might also like", but it didn't take off |
| Paçoca: rede social brasileira | iOS | 2025-12 | 67 ratings | "100% Brazilian social network", no promotion, didn't take off |
| Aspect: Rede Social Só IA | iOS | 2024-06 | pt 216 rating | Social made entirely of AI accounts; opposite direction |
| BiP(Turkcell) | iOS / Android | 2013 | Turkey 250k ratings | The "Brazilian social" recommended in the comments is actually a Turkish IM, not a direct competitor |
Conclusion: the product format isn't unique. Ginza and Paçoca both pitch "Brazil's new social network / Orkut" yet both stalled at double-digit ratings. The difference isn't features; it's that Yankee spent money and people on creator seeding.
3. Growth tactics: where users come from (by strength of evidence)
- Brazilian micro / nano creator UGC matrix (confirmed): searching "yankee rede social" on TikTok, starting 10-24, dozens of Brazilian small accounts (a few dozen to a few thousand followers) appeared posting nearly identical copy: "A rede social do momento é a Yankee. Todas as redes em um só lugar! Vem conhecer @Yankee" (@_karinastelag 10-29, @erikamartinsfranco 10-31, @paula.noseua 11-02). There are also accounts like "brunagomezugc" and "elliemay.ugc" that call themselves UGC creators, plus step-by-step tutorial accounts (@naturewithnano "Chegou agora no Yankee e ainda está perdido?"). Single videos get 200–20k views. Mid-tier: @cassioorangel (44k followers, 22k views) and @cidaa666 (20k followers). Uniform copy and concentrated timing are typical of bulk-bought or task-based UGC.
- Verified badge drives creator sign-ups + paid press (confirmed): Jornal de Brasília entertainment columnist Kátia Flávia published "Vagner Carvalho is among the first verified Brazilians on the new social network Yankee" on 11-04. The subject is a photographer and creator with 2.6M TikTok followers, and the whole piece is written in the creator's own voice, which looks like a paid publieditorial (inferred). TikTok also has posts like "how to get Yankee's two badges" and "Já tínhamos ganhado o selo de yankee Beta", which shows badges (Beta, verified, creator) are the hook used to recruit people and get them posting.
- Brazilian local media / startup accounts (confirmed): Not Journal (notjournal.ai) posted in September with the headline "Brazilians and MIT students built a platform in the US combining social and collaborative AI", playing the "built abroad by Brazilians, MIT-backed" card.
- Official TikTok / IG (confirmed): @yankeeapp has 7,486 followers and 230k total likes. An early teaser "Release in March across the U.S." got 1.2M views, "Meet Yankee" 410k (likely boosted by paid promotion, unverified). 10-29 ran a "free Yankee stickers" campaign: download, sign up, claim in settings.
- US UGC trial (confirmed, weak results): From 8 to September, US UGC creators (@elliemay.ugc) posted, but the US rating was only 41, and the US market largely didn't take off.
- Store rating manipulation (highly suspicious, not directly proven): Our library captured 729 br reviews: 726 at 5 stars, 3 at 4 stars, 0 at 1–3 stars, concentrated between 10-22 and 11-04. Brazil has only 941 ratings in total, yet 729 of them include text (77%), whereas normal apps are usually under 10%. The text is also formulaic: "Estou amando", "Melhor rede social", "a volta do Orkut". Likely creators or community members were asked to leave good reviews, or there was an in-app prompt, possibly with point rewards (a web summary on TikTok mentioned "Centro de Influencer, earn coins to cash out", original video not found, unverified).
- X / Reddit / HN / Product Hunt: x-radar finds no relevant discussion, and English media haven't covered it.
4. Why it took off
- Picked the right market: Brazilian users are especially keen on chasing "new social networks" (Orkut nostalgia, the mass migration to Bluesky 2024 years ago, waves of "nova rede social" launches), and the social chart bar is low: a few hundred ratings and tens of thousands of installs can reach the top 15. The US playbook (TestFlight, private beta, UGC) didn't work; shifting to Brazil brought volume.
- Narrative fit: Brazilian creators keep repeating "Orkut nostalgia + has everything + a relaxed community with no algorithm and no fights", which catches users' fatigue with Instagram / X polarization and feed algorithms. "sem polêmica", "sem política", and "a volta do Orkut" appear over and over in the comments.
- Money and people poured into creators: bulk micro-creators with uniform copy, badges for sign-up, advertorials. Ginza and Paçoca didn't do this, so one took off and two didn't.
- Scarcity of "private beta / grab your @username": "entry is super limited", "corram, garantam o seu @", paired with the Founding Member badge, lowered the barrier to try and made people feel they should hurry.
- Retention can't be judged yet: The official claim is 37k DAU / 55k new users, but that's self-reported; social apps that people try en masse usually fade within two or three weeks.
5. Differentiation
- The product-level differentiation is "one app folding in Instagram + X + Discord + WhatsApp, plus an AI agent Yuki (handles email, calendar, shopping)", and it also emphasizes a timeline feed, end-to-end encryption, no ad-tracking SDKs, and highly customizable profiles.
- This is not why it took off. Almost nobody in the Brazilian creator videos or comments mentions Yuki / AI (one comment even praises it as "sem ia"). What people buy into is "new, has everything, feels like Orkut, relaxed vibe". The AI narrative is mainly pitched to investors (LinkedIn, NVIDIA Inception, MIT). The differentiation that actually mattered is in the tactics: mass UGC seeding in Brazil, exchanging badges for creators.
6. How many people saw it / copycats
- Visibility: circulating in small circles. Brazilian TikTok / IG creator circles and small local media (Jornal de Brasília column, Not Journal) have covered it; English tech media, big X accounts, Product Hunt, and HN have not. There's no revenue to brag about, so the founders only flaunt user counts on LinkedIn.
- Copycats: none clearly found copying it. Ginza (Orkut) and Paçoca launched earlier or around the same time and don't count as copies. Kyzz Rede Social (listed 2026-11-03, Brazil) lines up in timing, but there's no evidence it was a copycat.
7. What to borrow
- The template for cold-starting a new social / community app in Brazil: dozens to hundreds of nano and micro UGC creators posting uniform copy + advertorials from one or two million-follower creators "getting verified" + username grabs / private beta scarcity + a badge system can, at very low cost, push into the top 15 of the br social chart.
- When the US didn't work, it switched to a market with "low rating thresholds, hunger for new social, cheap creators". The narrative was localized along with it (selling Orkut in Brazil).
- Risks: ratings are highly homogeneous, risking being judged by Apple as rating manipulation; it's free with no monetization, and retention is unvalidated.
8. Still unclear
- Are creators paid, swapped for badges, or incentivized with points / cash ("Influencer Center earn coins to cash out" unverified); whether there's Meta / TikTok paid ads (the ad library only tracks listed products, not checked).
- The authenticity of 55k users / 37k DAU, and retention in weeks 3–4.
- Whether the App Store ratings came from in-app prompts or bulk-generated.
- Store launch date (card 2026-01-09 vs lookup 2026-07-31).
