> The website had run for four years with over 300K long-time users who had been waiting for an app. Pre-registration gave out exclusive stickers, and the official X account announced on the same day, compressing the anticipation into one spike that pushed it to #1 on the Top Free chart. Inside the app, only Apple in-app purchases were allowed, so existing commission revenue shifted to IAP, lifting it on the Top Grossing chart too.

# "Finally": a Korean commission marketplace spent four years building a website before launching an app, and on launch day it hit #1 on the free overall chart

**What it is** A Korean marketplace for commissions in the fan-art and fan-fiction scene (character art, fan writing, handmade goods, tarot, voice work). Payment is held by the platform and released to the creator after delivery, with only the seller charged a 10% fee. This is the app version of its website.

**Why it took off** The website had run for four years with over 300,000 long-time users, who had been waiting for an app. Reservations that gave exclusive stickers, plus an official X announcement on the same day, concentrated the anticipation into one moment, and it hit #1 on the free chart. Inside the app, purchases must go through Apple's in-app payments, which moved existing commission volume onto that path and pushed it up the top-grossing chart.

**C** **How you could follow** Don't copy this launch push. Copy how it started: find a small community that trades privately on social platforms and often gets scammed (fortune-telling, voice acting, handmade goods, etc.), then move the transactions onto the platform with escrow payments and a seller-only fee. Start with a website and get sellers to put the order link on their own profiles to attract customers.

Grade C: the launch push depended on four years of accumulated users and existing transaction volume, which followers can't replicate. Korea, Japan, North America, and China all have local commission leaders, and its transaction volume has already been widely reported in Korea. What's worth learning is the vertical-marketplace playbook of escrow plus a seller-side fee. Head-on imitation isn't worth it. Publicly reported / widely discussed

CREPE (크레페) is a Korean platform where fans of fan art and fiction trade commissions: you pay, and an artist draws the character you like to your specifications. In 2026 October, its iOS app launched and hit #1 on the Korean App Store's free overall chart on day one, and two weeks later it was still #2 on the Graphics & Design top-grossing chart. It looks like a new app that blew up, but it's actually a 2025-year-old business that handles 43.6 billion won in transactions, moving a long-waiting user base into an app all at once. This piece covers where its real value lies and what you can take from it.

### The night of 20 October, the comments were all "드디어"

On 20 October, the app wasn't officially open yet, but users who had reserved it already had it auto-installed. Korean App Store reviews poured in: "드디어" (finally), "진짜 기다렸어요" (I really waited so long), "평소에 애용하던 사이트였는데 앱으로 나오니까 편리하고 좋아요" (I always used this site, and now that there's an app it's more convenient). Another wrote: "항상 삼성에서만 크레페 어렵게 하다가 드디어 아이폰에도" (I had to struggle using CREPE only on my Samsung, and finally there's an iPhone version).

That same night, the other half of the reviews were complaints: opening the app popped up "Update required," but the App Store had no update button, and deleting and reinstalling didn't help. The cause was that before the official launch, the app forced an update on reservation users who had installed it early, so it couldn't be opened. Even so, most of these reviews still gave 5 stars.

The iOS app officially opened at midday on 21 October, and the Android version followed on 22. On launch day it entered the Korean App Store free overall top 1 and the front of X's Korea real-time trends. The Android version reached #3 on the Google Play Art & Design trending chart (startup outlet Platum, 10-28).

Reservations opened on 2 October. The official X account posted the announcement "크레페가 주머니에 들어가요" (CREPE is going into your pocket), and reserving gave a "first login exclusive sticker pack." Three weeks of anticipation was released on the same day.

### What it is: adding escrow to "pay first, then draw" deals

Korean commissions (커미션) were originally done privately on X: artists posted price lists and availability, buyers sent DMs and transferred money first, then the artist drew. The problems were well known: paying and never receiving the work, ghosting, and payment scams (CREPE itself said this in a customer interview with Toss Payments, 2025-10).

CREPE's approach is simple:

- Money is held by the platform and released to the artist once the work is delivered;

- Only the accepting artist pays a 10% fee, and buyers pay no fee (Korean wiki namu.wiki);

- The product speaks the community's own language: "슬롯" (slots), "타입" (price-tier types), "구해요" (request boards).

The categories are no longer just drawing: fan fiction, handmade goods, design, tarot readings, and voice work. The store page says "From OC and fan art to ship fiction, handmade goods, and tarot readings." An average order is 2–30k won (Toss interview).

It's built by COOKIEPLACE (쿠키플레이스), a Seoul company whose founding team were users of the commission scene themselves. It began as a side project. It launched in 2022 under the name ccoli and was renamed in 2023.

### How big it already is

| Year | Annual transaction volume (KRW) |
|---|---|
| 2022 | ₩5.9B |
| 2023 | ₩13.6B |
| 2024 | ₩25.7B |
| 2025 | ₩43.6B (1.74M transactions, revenue ₩4.22B) |

(Company announced; also reprinted by Platum 2026-02-26 and others)

₩43.6B won is roughly $30M. Membership is 2025k over 327 years, and the core users are women in their 10–20s (Seoul Economic reported women in their 20s make up 75%). In 2024 it raised a ₩2B pre-Series A, and as of September 2026 it had 27 employees.

The App's numbers are actually flat: the Korean store's rating count went from 621 at 10-28 to 781 at 11-06, about ten to twenty a day, steady. Worldwide total 809 ratings, Taiwan 14, Japan 10, with a trickle of overseas users (App Store, 11-06). Android installs are about 39k, and 7 days recently added 5,788 (Google Play, 11-06).

### Where the users came from: almost all long-time users

- **The website moved over.** The first reviews are nearly all "finally" and "I've used the website all along," so the bulk of this wave is existing users. Confirmed.

- **Pre-registration + exclusive stickers + the official X account all dropped the same day.** That pushed hundreds of thousands of existing users' anticipation into one day, and it earned #1 on the overall free chart, and #1 bought another round of press: Platum, VentureSquare and Edaily all ran stories around 10-28 with the same angle, "#1 at launch, 43.6B annual transactions." Confirmed.

- **Artists sell it themselves.** Artists post "신청은 크레페로" (request through Crepe) on X and Instagram, so each artist is a channel. Confirmed.

- **A competitor's mistake sent people over.** Postype, the paid content platform Korean creators commonly use, added commission requests in 2024 November, then announced in 2025 March that from May it would raise its base fee from 10% to 30%, and creators migrated en masse (Seoul Economic Daily). Crepe's annual transaction volume went from 25.7B to 43.6B. How much force the migration wave contributed hasn't been broken out in numbers, so this is inference. In 2025 it also launched an anti-AI project, and from June 2026 its terms in principle ban generative AI works, which solidified its standing in the artist community.

- **Paid acquisition.** No evidence of ad spend found. One review says "맨날 챗지비티 링크로만 들어갔었는데" (I always went in through the ChatGPT link), so brand-name searches and AI recommendations likely account for a lot (inference).

### How it reached #2 on the Top Grossing chart

So #2 on the Graphics & Design Top Grossing chart (App Store Korea, from 11-04) doesn't mean the App brought in new revenue. Part of the commission flow that already existed on the website was moved onto Apple In-App Purchase. That category's chart bar is low, so a small slice of revenue is enough to reach the top. The cost is complaints: some users asked for Toss payment, and a 1-star review says "앱을 만들 필요가 없었을 정도로 사이트가 편하네요" (the site is so convenient you didn't need to build an App). The App itself has been called "inconsistent UI, like something a newcomer built alone" and "loads too slowly, worse than the website."

### Who it's competing with

| Name | Where | How it differs from Crepe |
|---|---|---|
| Postype · 리퀘스트 | Korea, App + web | The core business is paid serialized content; commissions are an add-on feature added by 2024-11. iOS Korea store rating count 6,784 (App Store, 11-06). Raising the fee to 30% in 2025 pushed people away. |
| Artmug | Korea, web | Leans toward commercial outsourcing and VTuber / Live2D, accepts PayPal; the personal anime commission scale is small |
| Kmong / 숨고 | Korea, App + web | General freelance outsourcing, also has commissions, but no community culture |
| Skeb | Japan, web | Anonymous one-way ordering with no communication; officially claims 4M registered users (2026-08) |
| VGen | North America, web | English-language VTuber and anime commissions |
| Mihua AI (米画师) | China, App + web | China's largest commission platform, no overlap with Korea |
| Private commissions on X | Everywhere | Free, biggest reach, no guarantees |

No new copycat App has appeared in Korea's App Store category. On the outsourcing site Wishket someone posted a request for "a platform like Artmug / Crepe," but I didn't see a finished product.

### If it were you

**My take:** You can't copy Crepe's chart run. It rests on four years of accumulated 300K+ long-time users and existing revenue flowing through the website. What's worth taking is the approach it started with: find a small circle that trades privately on social platforms with no guarantees, then pull the deals onto a platform using escrow payment plus "commission only from the seller."

**Who it suits:** People who are already inside a small circle (doujin, tarot divination, voice acting, handmade goods, game boosting, virtual avatars), who know how people in that circle trade privately on X / Xiaohongshu / Discord, and who know where people usually get scammed.

**Who it doesn't suit:** Anyone trying to build a "general commission platform" head-on in Korea, Japan, North America or China. Each of these big markets has a local leader (Crepe, Skeb, VGen, Meishihua). Crepe's transaction volume is public and Korean venture media has covered it extensively. Cold-starting in either market is slow, and one app can't solve that.

**How to do it:**

- Pick the circle first, then the category: Crepe's tarot, writing and voice categories are all growing. Going deep on one vertical is more realistic than building yet another broad commission site.

- Build the website first, not the App. Website payments can go through local bank transfer with low fees; App in-app purchase makes the buyer pay over 40% more, which is what Crepe is getting criticized for right now.

- The rules favor the seller: low commission, zero buyer fees, a clear stance (Crepe is anti-AI). When a big platform raises prices, the people who migrate look for you first.

- Build the product in the circle's own language: booking slots, price tiers, request boards, so it feels like "our thing."

**How to get users:** Not paid ads, seller-led referrals. First convince dozens of artists / diviners / voice actors with followings to put the order link on their own profiles, since each seller is a channel. Then watch for the moment a big platform changes its rules or raises fees, and move in right away to catch those users.

**When is the right time:** There's no window in the usual sense. This is a slow business: four years to grow sevenfold. The real opening is the few months when a big platform angers its sellers.

**What would show I got this wrong:** If Crepe's English version and overseas expansion work and spread quickly among artists in Taiwan, Japan or North America, that means copying into new regions has more room than I've assumed, and the local leaders are less stable. Conversely, if daily new ratings drop to single digits soon after launch and the App falls out of the top ten on the Top Grossing chart, then this push was a one-off even for Crepe itself.

## CREPE — the app version of a Korean anime commission marketplace

- App Store: [apps.apple.com/app/id6753073065](https://apps.apple.com/app/id6753073065), developer COOKIEPLACE Inc. (Cookieplace Co., Ltd., Mapo-gu, Seoul, founded in April 2022, co-CEOs 남선우 and 장동현)

- The store's release_date says 2026-10-02, which is when **pre-orders** opened; the iOS launch was **10-21 at noon** , and Android went live on 10-22 (official X post from @CREPE_CM; Platum 2026-10-28)

- Category: Graphics & Design, free to download, money comes in through in-app points (P) top-ups

### Bottom line

This app isn't new. It's a **website that has been running for 4 years and did 2025 years of ₩43.6B in transactions, and it moved its old users into an app** . Users had been waiting for it for a long time; nearly every early review is "드디어" (finally). Pre-registration opened in Oct 2, with a "first-login-only sticker pack" as a reward, plus an announcement from the official X account. On launch day the old users all came in at once, pushing it to #1 on the Korea App Store Top Free overall chart, and it was near the top of X Korea's real-time trends. It hit #2 on the Korea Graphics & Design Top Grossing chart. Behind that is the order flow the website already had, which now runs through Apple in-app purchases for credit top-ups. So the ranking reflects an old business switching where it collects payment, not a new demand that suddenly appeared.

### 1. Why it took off

#### 1.1 Starting point: moving private commissions off X and onto an escrow-backed platform (since 2022)

- Korean anime commissions (커미션 / 리퀘스트) were mostly private deals on X (Twitter): pay first, then wait for the art. Non-delivery, ghosting, and payment scams were common (Toss Payments customer interviews, 2025-10-13: [www.tosspayments.com/blog/articles/41109](https://www.tosspayments.com/blog/articles/41109); Seoul Economic Daily: [www.sedaily.com/article/14062985](https://www.sedaily.com/article/14062985)).

- CREPE's approach: the platform holds the buyer's payment in escrow and releases it to the artist after delivery (safe payment). It takes **10% from the artist** (company 4% + payment network fee 5% + VAT 1%, see namu.wiki: [namu.wiki/w/CREPE](https://namu.wiki/w/CREPE)). Buyers pay no fee.

- The founding team were commission-scene users themselves, and the project started as a side project (from the Toss interview: 「당시 커미션 문화 향유자들이 사이드 프로젝트로 크레페를 론칭」, roughly "commission-culture enthusiasts launched CREPE as a side project"). It was originally called ccoli (콜리) and was renamed CREPE in 2023-01-01 (namu.wiki).

#### 1.2 growth curve (company figures, reposted by several outlets)

| Year | Annual transaction volume | Source |
|---|---|---|
| 2022 | ₩5.9B | etnews 2026-02-26, Platum [platum.kr/archives/282619](https://platum.kr/archives/282619) |
| 2023 | ₩13.6B | Same as above |
| 2024 | ₩25.7B | Same as above |
| 2025 | ₩43.6B (1.74M transactions; overseas ₩2.5B; revenue ₩4.22B) | Platum 282619 |

- Members: 2024 214k → 2025 327k; **women in their 20s make up 75%** (Seoul Economic Daily 2025-05). Average order value ₩2–30k (Toss interview).

- Funding: 2024-10 Bonhm Angels Pre-A of ₩2B, ₩2.2B cumulative (Platum [platum.kr/archives/236092](https://platum.kr/archives/236092); innoforest). 2026-09 staff 27 people (THE VC).

#### A competitor gave CREPE a boost in 1.3: Postype raised its fees (2025)

- Postype is the paid-content platform most used by Korean anime creators. In 2024-11 it launched a commission feature, 「리퀘스트」, clearly following CREPE's lead (blog analysis: [phalanx-club.tistory.com/1460](https://phalanx-club.tistory.com/1460)).

- In 2025-03, Postype announced that from 5/1 it would raise its base fee from 10% to 30% ("discovery fee"). Creators pushed back hard and a platform-switching wave followed (Seoul Economic Daily: 「이용자들이 반발하면서 플랫폼 갈아타기 현상」; former CREPE CTO finn's summary post: [x.com/devunt/status/1901509311399944249](https://x.com/devunt/status/1901509311399944249)). That year CREPE's transaction volume went from ₩25.7B to ₩43.6B, and the migration is likely one of the drivers (**inference** , no broken-out numbers).

- In 2025 it also launched an anti-AI project, 「버틀레리안」, and from 2026-06-15 its terms in principle ban generative-AI works (reported by Hankyung, Byline, and others), taking the artists' side. That stance carries real weight with Korea's artist community.

#### 1.4 App launch wave (2026-10)

- **10-02** : the official X account posted a pre-order announcement, 「크레페가 주머니에 들어가요」 ("CREPE fits in your pocket"), with a "first-login-only" sticker pack for pre-ordering (https://x.com/CREPE_CM/status/2105873032145482221).

- **10-21 iOS / 10-22 Android launch** : #1 on the Korean App Store free overall chart; #3 in Google Play's Art & Design trending list; **trended near the top of X Korea on launch day** (Platum 2026-10-28: [platum.kr/archives/297180](https://platum.kr/archives/297180)).

- A wave of coordinated press followed around 10-28: Platum, VentureSquare, Nate, and Edaily all ran pieces, with a unified line: "#1 on the free chart at launch + ₩43.6B annual transactions."

#### 1.5 Our data

- **iOS (appstore database, kr store)** : ratings count 10-28 is 621,11-06 is 781, about 18 reviews/day, steady. Its Korean Graphics & Design **Top Grossing** rank went from #5 on 10-28 to **#2** starting 11-04, currently ranked behind Kling AI and ahead of 미리캔버스. It has not made the overall free chart since 10-28 (the free-chart #1 was on 10-21, before our database started recording on 10-28, so it isn't in our data).

- Ratings across all stores: 809; also tw 14, jp 10, ca 4. There's a trickle of organic overseas users, consistent with the company's claim that overseas users translate tutorials and spread it themselves.

- **Android (googleplay database)** : com.cookieplace.crepe, installs 38,614, +5,788 in the last 7 days; best rank in Korea's ART_AND_DESIGN Top Grossing was #6,10-29, first chart entry.

- **First reviews (appstore review table)** : in the first 10-20 and 10-21 days, nearly all reviews were 「드디어」, 「평소에 애용하던 사이트였는데 앱으로 나오니까 편리」 ("a site I already loved, now convenient as an app"), and 「항상 삼성에서만 … 드디어 아이폰에도」 ("always Samsung-only… finally on iPhone too"). Another batch complained that after pre-order auto-download, the app kept asking for an update, because the app was forced to update before the official opening. **Nearly all new downloads are from existing users.**

#### 1.6 How the money comes back, and why Top Grossing is so high

- On the website you can pay by quick bank transfer, card, Toss, and more. In the app, **only Apple in-app purchase top-ups for points** are available. Reviews say 「9000P costs 12900 won」, about 43% more than on the website (review 2026-10-28, kr). So Apple's cut is passed on to the buyer, and **this money was already there** . The bar for Korea's Graphics & Design Top Grossing chart is low, so moving part of the commission volume onto IAP is enough to reach #2.

- So "Top Grossing #2" describes an existing business that moved onto IAP. It doesn't mean the app brought in new revenue. Buyers are upset about the markup, with some proposing "add Toss payment", and existing users may return to paying on the website (one 1-star review says 「웹사이트로 충분히 잘 쓰는데 굳이 앱 안 만들어도 됐을 듯」, "the website works fine, no app needed").

### 2. Competitors

| Name | Where | Launched | Scale | How it differs from Crepe |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 포스타입 Postype · 리퀘스트 | iOS / Android / web (Korea) | Platform 2015; commission feature 2024-11 | iOS kr rating 6,784, Graphics/Design category Top Grossing #13 (appstore database 11-06); 2023 annual revenue about ₩4.3B | Main business is paid serials and blogs, with commissions as a side feature. In 2025 it raised fees to 30%, pushing some creators over to CREPE |
| 아트머그 Artmug | Web (Korea, Incowrks) | Around 2020 (unverified) | No public transaction volume; no real app | Leans toward commercial outsourcing, also does VTubers / Live2D / video, takes PayPal for overseas. Its anime C2C commission volume is smaller than CREPE's |
| 윗치폼 Witchform | iOS / Android / web (Korea) | iOS 2021-06 | iOS kr rating 849 | Mainly group buys and forms for idol fan support and merch, not 1-to-1 commissions |
| 크몽 Kmong / 숨고 | iOS / Android / web (Korea) | 2012 / 2015 | Kmong iOS kr rating about 16k | General freelance outsourcing platform that also has commissions, but no anime community culture or 「슬롯 / 타입 / 구해요」-style mechanics |
| Skeb | Web (Japan) | 2018 | Official claim of 4M registered users (2026-08), once acquired for ¥1B | Japan's version of "anonymous ordering + artist-set pricing": one-way requests, no back-and-forth. No Korean localization and no native iOS app |
| VGen | Web (North America) | Around 2022 | Not verified | English-speaking VTuber and anime commission platform; no native app found in the App Store catalog |
| Mihua AI (米画师) | iOS / Android / web (China) | iOS 2016-09 | China's biggest commission platform (scale unverified) | China market, no overlap with Korea. Part of CREPE's overseas volume came from Chinese users who found it on their own |
| Private commissions on X (Twitter) | Platform | — | The original venue for Korean commissions | Free and high-traffic, but no escrow. CREPE's value is pulling this kind of transaction onto a protected platform |

**No real copycats** : there's no similar new app in this category on the Korean App Store. A Wishket outsourcing post asked for "a platform like 아트머그 / CREPE" (https://www.wishket.com/project/similar-case-search/share/gRfkKESMDbaAUO8s/), but we found no finished product. The biggest follower is Postype's 「리퀘스트」 (2024-11), which claims its monthly earning creators grew 13x since its first month (Postype blog).

### 3. How users came in (growth tactics)

| Channel | Evidence | Confirmed? |

### 4. Differentiation

- **Versus private commissions on X** : escrowed payments, platform-handled disputes, and visible seller track records (cumulative orders, average delivery speed, tier), with only the seller paying a 10% cut, so buyers pay nothing extra. This is the **root reason** it took off.

- **Versus Postype and Kmong** : it does only commissions, and its product language is fully in-community ("슬롯", "타입", "오마카세", "고정틀", "#커미션_구해요" wish boards). Categories include tarot, writing, voice, and handmade goods, covering all the peripheral needs of 1020 women's "추앙/덕질" fandom. The fee is low (10%, versus Postype's 30%), and it takes a stance against AI.

- **The app itself has no differentiation** : reviews commonly say "UI 투박" (clunky), "알림 발사대" (notification launcher), and "사이트가 더 편함" (the site is easier). The app is mostly a shell for push notifications and a calendar. Its chart run came from existing users, not from the app being good.

### 5. How many people have seen it

- **Revenue and transaction volume are public and widely reported** : the company voluntarily disclosed annual transaction volume of 43.6B and revenue of 4.22B in 2026-02. JoongAng, Seoul Economic Daily, etnews, Platum, VentureSquare, and Hankyung have all covered it, and namu.wiki has an entry. Korea's VC circles know it well.

- Outside Korea (English- and Chinese-speaking circles), almost nobody knows it, apart from a handful of overseas illustrators.

### 6. What others can learn

1. **Find a circle that traded privately on social platforms with no protection** , then move the transactions into the open with escrowed payment and "only the seller pays a cut." Buyers face no switching cost, and sellers gain more orders and a credit record.

2. **Build the product in the community's own language** (슬롯 / 타입 / 구해요), and take a clear side with creators (low fee, anti-AI). When rivals raise prices, it can directly absorb the people who migrate.

3. **Launch an app only after the website is mature** : pre-orders + limited digital merch + official accounts announcing on the same day can turn the existing user base's anticipation into one chart placement, which then buys another round of media exposure.

4. **In-app purchases let buyers absorb Apple's cut** : point top-ups carry a markup of about 43%, which brings Top Grossing placement but draws complaints and pushes users back to paying on the website.

5. Approaches that could be copied to other regions: Japan has Skeb, North America has VGen, China has 米画师, and most large markets have a local leader. A more realistic angle is to go vertical within an existing community (tarot, fortune-telling, voice, and so on).

### 7. Still unclear

- After the app launch, how many are **actually new users** , versus website users who just switched entry points; and what share of total revenue comes from in-app purchases.

- The #1 overall Top Free placement happened only around launch day, and our database starts recording on 10-28, so we can only cite the company's and the media's claims.

- The specific contribution of the Postype price-hike migration wave to 2025 year-on-year growth.

- VGen and Skeb's latest scale, and whether they have native apps (none found in our App Store directory).

- How the team's stability and governance held up after the 2023-year-old former representative was dismissed for violations and the "black-hearted company" controversy (namu.wiki).
