15 ratings got it into Spain's Sports Top Grossing top 15: the real scale of an Apple Watch padel coach app
What it is: an Apple Watch padel app. The watch automatically recognizes which of 9 shot types you hit and measures swing speed, then after a session gives you a shot-quality score, fatigue, tactics, and AI coaching tips. Advanced analytics are sold by subscription.
Why it took off: Apple Watch has no padel workout type, and club players taking lessons will pay to learn "which shot to practice." Spanish micro-influencer reviews plus a full-month giveaway brought the first subscribers, and Spain's Sports Top Grossing chart has a low bar, so a handful of subscriptions can reach the top 30.
CHow you could follow it: Don't build another padel app. Take the "watch recognizes motion + sell coaching and recovery analytics" model to racket sports Apple doesn't natively support (squash, badminton, table tennis). Cold-start with niche-influencer reviews and giveaways, and localize into multiple languages to pick up chart visibility in small markets.

In September 22, an engineer in Zaragoza who writes Android by day shipped his first iPhone app, PadelLabs. It lets Apple Watch recognize every shot you hit on the padel court, then tells you which shot is weakest, whether you're tired today, and what to practice. A month later it hit #15 in Spain's App Store Sports chart with only 15 ratings worldwide. The rank looks impressive, but the real scale is small. Below: what it actually sells, where the rank came from, who got there two years earlier, and whether this path is worth following.
A "my coach says the same thing" review
On day eight after launch in September 30, a Spanish user gave it 5 stars:
Mi entrenador siempre me dice que tengo que mejorar mi volea de derecha porque es uno de mis golpes más flojos, y resulta que Padel Labs me marca justo lo mismo 😂 (My coach always tells me my forehand volley is one of my weakest shots, and Padel Labs flags exactly that same shot.)
In October 23, another one: "I'm taking lessons now and want to get better at hitting, and with this app I can focus on my weakest spots." In October 31, a user who called himself "a casual player" wrote: "Insta buy después probarla en par de games" (bought it right away after trying it for a couple of games).
These reviews show who is paying. Its users aren't people who just want to log a score. They're club players taking lessons who want to know what to practice before the next session.
What it is
The developer is Jose Luis Dumas Leon, a Havana University grad working as a Lead Android engineer at an IT company in Zaragoza. His personal site says: "Day job by day, indie apps by night." This is the only app on the account, and his portfolio shows "Padel Labs – Coming Soon" posted at the end of 2025.
One-line pitch: wear the watch while you play, and get a coaching-style debrief when you're done.
- The watch reads wrist motion at 100Hz and identifies 9 pádel strokes on-device: forehand, backhand, forehand and backhand volleys, smash, víbora, bandeja, and forehand and backhand lobs. It also measures swing speed. All of it runs on the watch, so the phone can stay in your bag, and it works with no signal.
- Each stroke type gets a 0–5 score, judged against what a "normal" version of that shot looks like. There's also a three-part fatigue score, a tactical profile (net-heavy or baseline-heavy, attacking or defensive), and five heart-rate zones.
- It reads your daily heart-rate variability, resting heart rate, and sleep from Apple Health and gives a "how are you today" signal, somewhat like WHOOP.
- The AI coach answers only from your own sessions and lists the data behind each answer.
- No account needed. Data stays local. Available in 25 languages.
The store description puts it bluntly: "Sin cámara. Sin sensores que comprar. Sin nadie apuntando cada punto. Solo juega." No camera, no sensors to buy, no one logging every point. Just play. Each of the three lines targets a different competitor type.
Pricing: free to download. Stroke detection, ball speed, and single-session overview are free. Pro unlocks the full analysis, heart-rate charts, trends, the AI coach, and history beyond 90 days. In-app prices in the Spanish store are €1,99 / €6,99 / €49,99 (whether €1,99 is the weekly plan or an intro offer is unverified).
Why anyone would want it
Pádel is a mass sport in Spain and Latin America, yet Apple Watch's workout types still have no pádel option (tennis and pickleball are both there). People on Apple's community forums and Reddit keep asking for it, and it still hasn't been added. One 5-star review from Oct 1 says it plainly:
te permite registrar los entrenos de pádel con el Apple Watch, ya que no tiene esa función nativa — it lets you log pádel training with the Apple Watch, since the watch has no native feature for it.
That gap has supported a whole category of pádel apps on Watch.
How it ranks
Start with the numbers (App Store, 10-28 to 11-06):
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Global ratings | 15 ratings, averaging 4.87, all from the Spanish store |
| 10 new in the last day | 10-28 at 11 hours, 11-06 at 15 hours |
| Spain Sports Top Grossing | On the chart every day: 72 → 35 → 51 → 25 → 15 (11-01) → 29 → 57 → 127 → 63 → 25 |
| Best Sports Top Grossing rank in other countries | Nicaragua 3, Portugal 13, Chile 15, Paraguay 24, Panama 30, Brazil 34, and about 14 countries in total |
The key is that the bar is very low on Spain's sports Top Grossing chart. 11-01 On the day it hit #15, the #18 and #20 apps had only 5 and 13 ratings respectively. A rank like #3 in Nicaragua takes just a handful of subscriptions. Combined with the fact that only Spain has ratings, its revenue is probably in the range of a few subscriptions a day, mostly from Spain, with a few scattered from Latin America (inferred). Its rank bounces between #15 and #127, which means there's no steady traffic.
So where did the first paying users come from? The evidence is concentrated:
- Spanish-language pádel micro-influencer reviews. On TikTok, @esepadel (Eva), who has 22k followers, posted in Oct 13: "Day 10, testing the pádel product going viral online… this one is free." It got 27.9k views and 755 likes. The official account says on TikTok that after her share it "brought a flood of downloads, new users, and support messages." Another blogger with 1075 followers posted "He probado @PadelLabs" (I tried PadelLabs) in Oct 15, getting 749 views.
- Influencers also left reviews. On the App Store, an Oct 1 review reads "Finally an app that records pádel training with Apple Watch!" signed Eva Santalla. An Oct 22 review reads "App top!!" signed MarçalB, the same name as the second blogger.
- One-month anniversary giveaway. On October 21 and 22, the official account announced a one-month-since-launch giveaway with a 1-year Pro plan as the prize, entered via the pinned Instagram post, closing Oct 30. 4 5-star reviews came in over October 22 and 23. Unverified whether entering required a review, but the timing lines up.
The official TikTok has only 17 followers, with videos getting a few hundred views. No coverage turned up in media, on X, on Reddit, or on Product Hunt. No evidence of paid ads was found, though that can't be ruled out.
Who got there two years earlier
Apple Watch auto-detecting padel shots wasn't invented here. Padelio is from another Spanish indie dev, Marcos Sabaris, launched in July 2024. Like this one, it uses watch sensors plus a self-trained model to recognize lobs, volleys, bandeja, víbora and smashes, with live scoring, and it has since expanded to pickleball. 11-06 It has 703 ratings in the Spain store, about 47x PadelLabs; in 10 days it charted in sports Top Grossing across about 50 countries. Pricing is 3,99–4,99€ weekly, 7,99€ monthly, 49,99€ yearly, plus a one-time purchase. 2024 it was posted on Product Hunt and Reddit, and its TikTok account has videos with 100k and 560k views.
11-01 On Spain's sports Top Grossing chart, Padelio ranks #22, just below PadelLabs.
Beyond that, the market splits into four tiers:
| Approach | Examples | Status |
|---|---|---|
| Watch stroke detection | Padelio; PadelWatch, Padel Motion Tracker, Padel Analytics, and others | Padelio is the leader; the rest launched in a cluster across 2026, with Spanish ratings mostly 0–1 |
| Watch scoring | Padel Watch, PadelTick, PadelPro, PadelMax, and others | The largest group. Single TikTok videos at 30–600k views are common, but tapping to log a point is hard to charge for |
| Phone video with AI analysis | Padel AI, PadelShot AI, and others | Someone has to film, and analysis is per session |
| Hardware and club cameras | Paddle sensors, wristbands; aiball, Padmi, and others | Requires buying hardware or club installation |
Compared with Padelio, PadelLabs is more granular: it breaks strokes into 9 types against 5 opponent types, gives a quality score per shot, adds recovery and an AI coach that cites its evidence, requires no account, and costs about €1 a month. That explains why some people buy after two sets. But what pushed it onto the charts was influencers, a giveaway, and a low-bar chart. It's not a new category; it's a catch-up play that goes deeper within an existing one.
One risk to note: if Apple ever adds pádel to fitness training, the value of the sport-logging and scoring layer gets eaten by the system first.
If it were you
C. There's something to learn here, but copying it isn't worth the effort. The pádel slot already has Padelio, which launched two years earlier and has 47 times the ratings, plus a long tail that flooded in around the same time. PadelLabs itself does better work, yet after more than a month it's only reached a few subscriptions a day. The takeaways worth keeping are two things: the product template of "on-device motion model + sell coaching and recovery," and a nearly free cold-start playbook.
Who it fits: indie developers who can write watchOS, can collect their own data and train a motion model, and who play a racket sport themselves and can find local coaches and playing partners to help label data.
Who it doesn't fit: anyone looking to build another pádel stroke-detection app (the top spot in Spain is already taken); anyone wanting to build "watch scoring" (big views, but no money); anyone without ML or sensor experience who expects to ship in a few weeks.
How to do it: change sports, not tracks. Look for racket sports that Apple Watch doesn't natively support, or supports only loosely, and that have a coaching community, such as squash, badminton, or table tennis. First check whether the store already has a established peer like Padelio. Sell "which stroke is your weakest, and should you play today" rather than "scoring," since that's what gets paid €50 a year. Give stroke detection and a single-session overview away free, so people see the value after one match.
How to get users: follow its playbook. Work with 1–3 sport-specific creators with around 20k followers to do real reviews (its biggest video got only 28k views and still brought a wave of downloads). Run a one-month giveaway for 1 year(s) of Pro after launch. Localize the store page into two dozen-plus languages. Small countries' sports charts have a low bar, so a few subscriptions can get you onto them, which earns free exposure. Then partner with local coaches, since "the coach says the same thing the app says" is the most persuasive line you can have.
When to move: there's no hard deadline. But Apple could add new workout types to watchOS in any autumn update. You want the coaching-analysis layer built before that happens, because if it only logs workouts, the system feature will absorb the value.
Signs you've misjudged it: ① PadelLabs is still at a few dozen ratings and off Spain's Sports Top Grossing top 100 by early next year, which would mean the paying audience for this depth of analysis is smaller than you thought; ② the sport you picked already has an app with several hundred ratings doing stroke detection, so that gap is filled; ③ your review videos go out and don't turn into a few subscriptions within a week, which would mean players in this sport won't pay for watch analysis.

Bottom line
PadelLabs is an Apple Watch padel (pádel) stroke-recognition and performance analysis app built by a solo developer in Spain, launched Sep 22. It hasn't really taken off yet. It has surfaced on a low-bar chart: Spain's sports top grossing chart is easy to crack, a few subscriptions can land it in the top 30, and all 15 of its ratings come from Spain, at least 2 of them from partnered influencers. Three things are actually driving its subscription revenue:
- A deeper product: 9 stroke types, stroke quality scored 0–5, fatigue, tactical profiles, recovery, and an AI coach, with no account required and local-first data;
- Spanish influencer seeding: at least 3 micro-influencers, the biggest with 22k followers;
- A one-month launch giveaway (prize: 1-year Pro).
The category isn't new. Padelio, the same model, launched 2024 years ago and is about 47 times its size (703 Spain ratings vs. 15). Its edge is being more detailed and more like a coach, not being first.

How to read these numbers:
- The Spanish Sports Top Grossing chart is easy to get onto at 15–30: apps with only single-digit ratings show up there often. A #3 spot in Nicaragua usually takes just one subscription sale.
- Going by the fact that only Spain has ratings, the revenue reads as a few subscriptions a day, mostly from Spain, with a handful scattered across Latin America. That's inference, not verified.
- Rank swings are huge (15 to 127 and back), so there's no steady traffic base.
3. Competitors: who else does the same thing
This niche has four layers.
A. Same model: Apple Watch detects shots automatically, no camera, no sensors
- Padelio (Marcos Sabaris, a solo Spanish developer, launched 2024-07-28):
- Uses Apple Watch sensors and a self-trained ML model to detect globo, volea, bandeja, víbora and remate, plus live scoring, smash ball speed and AI session analysis. It later expanded to pickleball.
- 703 ratings on the Spain store (4.53 stars). In the last 10 days it charted on the Sports Top Grossing chart in about 50 countries: El Salvador and Madagascar at best #2, Spain at best #22 and on average #62.
- Pricing: weekly €3,99–4,99, monthly €7,99, yearly €49,99, one-time purchase €74,99–109,99.
- Launched on Product Hunt and r/SideProject 2024 years ago. Its TikTok account had videos with 106k and 560k views.
- This is PadelLabs' direct rival, and it got there two years earlier.
- PadelWatch: Marcador y Golpes (2026-01), Padel Motion Tracker (2026-09-24), Padel Analytics (ArnoHealth, 2026-09-07), PADA, Vibora Padel Tracker, Padelistics, PickleWatch and others all pitch 'score on the watch + detect shots', but their Spain ratings sit at roughly 0–1. The long tail is big, and none has taken off.
B. Watch scoring apps (the largest group and the most crowded)
- Padel Watch (2022, 58 ratings in Spain), Padel Point (2025), iWatch Padel (2022, €2,99 paid), PadelTick, PadelPro, PadelMax, Padel Pointer and more.
- These mostly pull users in with TikTok videos. Single videos with 30–600k views are common (@padeltick, @padelproapp).
- They work by tapping to log each point. They don't detect shots. PadelLabs' description includes the line "Sin nadie apuntando cada punto" (no one has to log every point), which is aimed squarely at them. Its US-store listing suggests it recently added point-by-point logging too.
C. AI video analysis from phone footage
- Padel AI (Hypecent, charted in 2026-03,33 countries), PadelShot AI (2026-02), Kanchara, Linceya and others.
- You upload a video and the AI scores your technique. The catch is that someone has to film you, and each analysis covers a single clip, not every match.
D. Hardware and court cameras
- Racket sensors: Padelplay sensor and the Padel Band wristband. You have to buy extra hardware.
- Club AI cameras: aiball, Padmi, Clutch, and Rackety, which Lumi covered. These require the club to install them.
Big-platform gap: Apple Health and Workout still have no Padel workout type (Tennis and Pickleball are there). Requests keep appearing in Apple's community forums and on Reddit. Sources: discussions.apple.com/thread/255510542; reddit r/AppleWatch xnr5bx; padelaiapp.com/features/padel-apple-watch. This gap is where every Watch-based padel app lives. If Apple adds native support, the scoring and logging apps will feel it first.
4. Growth tactics: where users come from
- Spanish-language padel micro-influencer seeding: this is the main channel with hard evidence.
- @onlyforpadel (TikTok, 693 followers): On launch day, the official account reposted it with a thank-you, "gracias por darnos visibilidad" (9-28).
- @esepadel / Eva (22.3k TikTok followers): on 10-13 she posted "Día 10 probando productos de pádel virales… y este es GRATIS", with 27.9k views and 755 likes.
- The official account 10-07 posted on TikTok that after Eva shared it, it "brought a ton of downloads, new users and support messages" (un montón de descargas).
- A 5-star review on the App Store 10-01 is signed "Eva Santalla" with the title "¡Por fin una app que registra los entrenos de Pádel para el Apple Watch!", matching the influencer's name.
- @marshbenedicto / Padel w/ Marçal (1075 followers): 10-15 posted "He probado @PadelLabs", 749 views; the official account 10-16 thanked them. On the App Store 10-22, a 5-star review signed "MarçalB" reads "App top!!".
- Verdict: the classic 'give Pro or a partnership to micro-influencers → they post a review and leave a good rating.' The partnership is confirmed. Whether they were paid is unknown.
- Sources: TikHub search and user profiles, 2026-11-06; Apple RSS reviews.
- One-month anniversary giveaway: On 10-21, 10-22 officially announced a "first-month celebration giveaway" with a prize of 1 year(s) of Pro. The campaign was pinned on Instagram and ran until 10-30. Over the following two days, 10-22 and 10-23, 4 five-star reviews showed up in 5. It's unverified whether leaving a review was a condition of entry, but the timing overlaps closely.
- Owned social:
- The TikTok account has 17 followers and 10 videos, with 300–900 views per video. Its impact is small.
- Instagram @padellabs.app posts the same content, and 10-02 one post gets about 26 likes.
- The product includes a 'share to Instagram Stories' session card, a possible self-spreading loop. Its effect is unknown.
- Store search / ASO:
- Title 'PadelLabs: Padel AI Coach', subtitle 'Track strokes, train smarter';
- Localized in 25 languages. That's one reason it shows up on charts in Latin America, Portugal, Romania and Germany.
- The App Store's 'You might also like' section pairs it with PadelShot AI, Padel Master Watch and others.
- Works, but at small scale.
- Paid ads: no evidence found. I didn't check the Meta or TikTok public ad libraries one by one this time. Our ad library only tracks apps on our list, so not finding ads doesn't mean none were run.
- Media / X / Reddit / HN / Product Hunt: none. x-radar shows 0 mentions of 'padellabs' in the last 60 days. No press coverage or Reddit threads found. Every feature on the site's 'vote for community features' page has 0 votes.
5. Why it took off (at its scale)
- The demand already exists: padel is a mainstream sport in Spain and Latin America (Playtomic Spain has 79k ratings). Apple Watch has no padel workout type. A user review says it directly: "te permite registrar los entrenos de pádel con el Apple Watch, ya que no tiene esa función nativa" (you can log padel training with the Apple Watch, since the watch doesn't have that feature natively).
- Willingness to pay comes from feeling like you have a coach:
- Reviews repeatedly mention things like "I'm taking lessons and want to know which shot to work on" and "my coach said my forehand volley is weak, and the app says so too";
- A shot-quality score plus fatigue, tactics and an AI coach is convincing for serious amateurs trying to improve;
- One user wrote "Insta buy después probarla en par de games" (I bought it right away after a couple of games).
- Spain's sports chart has a low bar: with a small wave of Spanish users from influencers, plus a €6,99 monthly / €49,99 yearly subscription, it can reach the top #30. So '15 ratings reaching the top #25' looks impressive, but the actual volume is tiny.
- Influencer seeding + giveaway + reviews: this effectively built the ratings and the first conversions. But only 5 new ratings in 10 days shows there's no sustained organic growth.
6. Differentiation, and whether that's why it took off
Compared with Padelio, PadelLabs differs in these ways:
- Finer shot detection: Padelio tracks 5 shot types. PadelLabs tracks 9, separating forehand and backhand volleys and forehand and backhand lobs.
- Quality, not just counting: each shot type gets a 0–5 score, benchmarked against norms for that shot.
- Recovery readings: daily Energy / Recovery / Sleep / Exertion signals from HRV and sleep, similar to WHOOP's 'should I play today?' approach.
- AI coach grounded in your own data, with evidence, and it says so when the data isn't enough.
- Privacy: no account, local-first, works offline.
- Lower price: €6,99 a month versus €7,99, and the yearly plan is €49,99.
Versus logging apps: no tapping every point, you get analysis after the match. Versus video apps: no tripod, no filming, every session gets covered. Versus hardware: no extra sensors and no dependence on club cameras.
Is this why it took off? Partly. The differentiation explains why a few users are willing to pay, and comments like 'Insta buy' and 'I'm taking lessons' show it. But what actually pushed it onto the chart was Spanish influencer seeding and the giveaway, plus Spain's low-bar sports chart. Its core selling point, 'the watch detects shots', was already offered by Padelio two years earlier. So it isn't a new category. It's a catch-up play in an existing category, built with more depth.
7. Visibility and copycats
- Visibility: almost nobody knows about it yet.
- No public revenue (no TrustMRR listing, founder hasn't posted numbers);
- No media or X discussion;
- 17 followers on the official TikTok; only mentioned in small Spanish-speaking pádel circles.
- The public Similarweb page (10-18 data) only shows it ranking #60–#115 in the sports charts of Guatemala, the Dominican Republic and Spain.
- Copycats: no clear copycats. There are plenty of long-tail lookalikes (Padel Motion Tracker launched 9-24, Padel Analytics launched 9-07, etc.), but nothing shows they copied PadelLabs. They look more like indie devs piling into the same niche at the same time.
8. What others can borrow
- Template: "on-device Apple Watch motion model + subscription analytics" transfers to any swing sport Apple doesn't natively support, or only supports roughly: pickleball, squash, badminton, table tennis, golf swings. Padelio has already expanded to pickleball.
- Sell coaching and recovery, not scorekeeping: scorekeeping content gets big TikTok views but is hard to charge for. Selling "which shot to drill and how you're doing today" is what gets people to pay 50€/year.
- Cold start: recruit 1–3 niche sports creators with 20k followers for "review + praise" posts, and pair that with a giveaway of 1 years of Pro at the one-month mark. Small-language and small-country sports Top Grossing charts have a low bar, so you can get chart exposure fast.
- Localize the store listing: localize into 25 languages to get chart positions in small countries at low cost.
9. Uncertain
- Whether the 1,99€ tier is weekly, a first-period discount, or something else is unverified; actual subscriber counts and revenue are unknown.
- No evidence found that they run Meta or Apple Search Ads, but that can't be ruled out.
- Unverified whether creator partnerships are paid, or whether the giveaway requires leaving a review.
- The 11-01 US store description now adds per-point scoring; whether that improves conversion isn't visible yet.
- The real-world accuracy of the on-device 9 recognition hasn't been independently verified; one user reports the AI coach is "temporarily unavailable" (10-12,3 stars).
