# A pirate brand that doesn't exist on iPhone got registered on the App Store as a scores app

**What it is** An iPhone cricket scores app that borrows the name of the pirate streaming brand "CricFy TV" and promises live streaming, but inside it's only scores, news and interstitial ads.

**Why it took off** The genuine CricFy isn't on iPhone. Early 2026, it was hit by an Indian court injunction and Google Play Protect, right around the T20 World Cup. iPhone users searching the name landed on this same-name shell.

**C** **How you could follow** Don't copy the name. Learn the idea: catch the people searching for a product on a platform where that product is absent, and build a legitimate fixture list plus a guide to official live streams, with keywords tied to the event calendar.

Grade C: "intercepting search terms on platforms where the original product is absent" is worth learning, but this keyword already has seven or eight shells, the leader grows 30x faster, and this app added only 7 ratings in 18 days. Piggybacking on a pirate brand with misleading copy could get it pulled by Apple at any time. Almost nobody knows about it yet

CricFy TV is the most popular pirated sports streaming APK in South Asia and East Africa, and it's Android-only. In 2025 December, a developer named Nayan Akbari published "CricFy TV : Live Cricket TV" on the App Store. Open it and you get scores and ads. It landed in the same month the original was hit by a court and Google at once, and it picked up free traffic from the search box. Below: how this play works, how crowded it's gotten, and whether it's worth following.

### A one-star review

In 2026 Jan 25, an Indian user named Vyom.v gave it one star under the title "Scam app", with the body: "Stay away!! Nothing but scam ads on it". In Jun 11, another Indian user wrote in Hindi: "Bahut bekar app h koi mtlb nhi h ad dikhata h hr click pr", meaning it's terrible, useless, and shows an ad on every click. The latest review, from Oct 22, is just four words: "Scam / Ads only". (App Store India reviews, 11-06)

Yet the same app has 566 ratings in the India store, averaging 4.1 stars. The store subtitle reads "Live Cricket TV HD Streaming", but the description only promises "real-time match scores, ball-by-ball updates, latest sports news, and official ICC rankings". Scores, news, rankings. Not one word about live video.

People come looking for a live stream and get scores. That's the whole secret of this app.

### What it is: a borrowed name, ready-made scores

The original CricFy TV is a free pirated APK for cricket and football streams, distributed through download sites like cricfy.net and cricfytv.su, and installed on phones and TV boxes in India, Pakistan, Nepal, Kenya and Uganda. Those download sites themselves say there is no official iOS version, and YouTube tutorials titled "How to get CricFy TV on iPhone" all say it can't be found on the App Store.

So iPhone users searching "Cricfy" in the App Store only get same-name shells. This one takes the brand term "CricFy TV" in its name and the high-frequency phrase "Live Cricket TV" after it, and its description is stuffed with IPL, World Cup, T20, PSL, BBL, CPL. The function is a plugged-in off-the-shelf scores feed plus interstitial ads. The privacy policy sits on a free blogspot blog. The version history has four releases: 1.0 (2025-12-03), 1.0.1, 2.0.1 (December), and after that only one update on 2026-06-12, 2.0.2, with the note "Minor API key changes". It swapped an API key and hasn't been touched since.

### Why it took off: in one month, the original got knocked down twice

Within two months of its launch, the original ran into trouble repeatedly:

- Late January 2026, the Delhi High Court issued a live-streaming blocking injunction for the T20 World Cup to JioStar, and CricFy was named (JioStar press release, MediaNama 2-05 coverage).

- Around the same time, Google Play Protect flagged CRICFy as harmful, disabling it on Android phones and TVs and remotely uninstalling it. On Reddit's r/AndroidTVApps, someone posted the system message: "An application named CRICFy TV has been disabled due to risky behavior". African tech outlet The End ran the headline "Google Purges Piracy Apps Starting With Cricfy" in Feb 4.

- Feb 7: the T20 World Cup kicked off.

The harder the original was to use, the more people searched "Cricfy alternative" and "Cricfy iPhone". IPL, the 2026 football World Cup and national leagues came in rotation, and people kept searching the term. The shell app didn't have to do anything; it just had to rank above the other results. 11-06 On the App Store India store, a search for "cricfy" puts it second.

### Where users come from: the search box, nothing else

There's no sign it runs ads. Searching "cricfy tv iphone" on TikTok doesn't surface any of its videos; that content is all about installing the original APK on Android or projectors. Nobody has mentioned it on X in the past three months. Nearly all traffic is App Store search.

It has appeared in category charts in 32 to 56 countries, which sounds big, but mostly it's the low bar of small-country Sports Top Free charts: in Botswana it reached #26 with only 0 ratings. The real volume is in India: its best Sports Top Free rank was #14,11-06, and the store page currently shows #41. In Nepal, its best was #12.

How much volume? Ratings across all stores add up to about 1,116, with only 18 new in the last 7 days (App Store, all regions, 10-28 to 11-06). The India store went from 9 to 544 in 566 days. It isn't being cleaned out, but it isn't gaining much traction either.

How did the 4.1-star average happen? Of the 566 ratings, only 6 include text, and 5 are one-star. A gap that wide between star ratings and written reviews most likely means a system rating prompt fires right after install and people tap high without thinking (inference).

### Where the money comes from: interstitial ads, a one-off

It's free with no in-app purchases, and it has never appeared on the Top Grossing chart. The only revenue path is interstitial ads. Users come for live streams, find only scores, and most delete it after a few ads. So the business doesn't run on retention; it runs on a steady flow of people searching in, each generating a few ad impressions. Real downloads and ad revenue aren't visible from outside; working backward from a dozen-odd new ratings a week, the volume is small (estimate).

### Who it's competing with: a row of shells under the same name

| Name | Platform | Launched | Scale | Difference |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| CricFy TV original APK | Android sideloading | About 2023 | Large user base in South Asia and East Africa; named in the early-2026 injunction and cleared by Play Protect | Actually streams pirated live video |
| Cricfy TV : Live Sports(Sultan Al Nuaimi) | iOS | 2026-04-13 | India store 2,157 rating, about 6,765,7 days across all stores +587 | Top of the same playbook, roughly 6x its size and 30x its growth rate; has in-app purchases |
| Cricfy Football Live TV Score(Berngeins) | iOS | 2025-08-23 | About 7,929 ratings across all stores | Uses the same name for football, targeting Africa and the Middle East |
| CricFy TV : Live Score(Mimouna Hartane) | iOS | 2025-07-16 | About 4,446 ratings | Football scores plus Arabic, riding both Yacine TV and Cricfy |
| CricFy TV : Live All Sports(BHAGVANBHAI BOGHANI) | iOS | 2026-07-11 | About 147 ratings | Later copycats |
| Cricfy Live TV All Sports Pro | iOS | 2026-10-09 | 2 rating | Most recent copycats |
| Live Cricket TV : All Matches(Snehal Sangani) | iOS | 2024-06-26 | About 7,176 ratings | Older shell without the brand term, living off "Live Cricket TV" alone |
| The CricFy shell on Google Play | Android | 2025-10 to 2026-09 | The biggest one: 390k installs; one from late September with 7 days +42k installs | Same playbook, but Android is an order of magnitude bigger |
| Cricbuzz / Cricinfo / FanCode | iOS | 2010–2018 | Cricbuzz India store 340k ratings | A legit scores product with full features, crushing it |

(App Store and Google Play data across stores, 11-06)

A few things jump out. First, it's not the biggest under this keyword: the one Sultan Al Nuaimi shipped in April has already left it far behind. Second, copycats keep coming, with new clones still launching as recently as October. Third, the developers behind these clones have highly similar names: Nayan Akbari, Snehal Sangani, Namrata Akabari, Vivek Sangani, BHAGVANBHAI BOGHANI, all Gujarati surnames, and their categories nearly overlap (Nayan Akbari also has an app that copies Snehal Sangani's "Where is my Train"). Whether these came from a single studio pumping them out is unproven (inference).

### Can you ride it?

Copying it takes almost zero effort: one scores API, one ad SDK, one title that borrows a name, and you can ship in a week. But because the barrier is zero, this keyword is already packed, and you'd land around seventh.

The bigger problem is the name itself. It belongs to someone else and is a pirated brand; the subtitle says "HD Streaming," but there's no streaming inside. That violates both Apple's rules on misleading metadata and its rules on trading on others' brands. The reviews concentrate on "scam," so it could be pulled or forced to rename at any time. There's also this: its traffic depends entirely on the original. If the original gets fully shut down and nobody searches the term anymore, the traffic is gone too.

What you can actually take away is the underlying logic: **when a product exists only on one platform or is being suppressed, users go searching for its name on the platforms where it's absent.** You don't have to capture that gap by borrowing a name. You can build your own name and something genuinely useful, and catch those searches with keywords and descriptions.

### If it were you

**C** . You can learn one move, "intercept search terms on platforms where the original product is missing," but copying this particular app isn't worth it: the keyword is already crowded with seven or eight clones, the head growth is 30 times its own, the volume is small, and it could be pulled at any moment.

**Who it fits** : small teams that already run sports scores or utility apps, know ASO, and can ship a batch in a week, treating this as one number in a portfolio rather than expecting any single app to earn.

**Who it doesn't fit** : anyone who wants a product that lasts; indie devs hoping one app will bring their first revenue; anyone who cares about developer account safety. A name-borrowing, misleading app getting banned drags the whole account down with it.

**How to do it** : don't touch the brand term. Make something genuinely useful that can ship compliantly. For example, a cricket and football fan tool that answers "which legal platform is showing tonight's match, and how much does it cost," with a schedule plus a guide to licensed live streams. Put "live cricket" and "where to watch" in the name and description to catch people who can't find the original and would actually pay for legal viewing.

**How to get users** : mainly App Store search. One to two weeks before a match, swap keywords and screenshots to the season's events (IPL, T20, the football World Cup). Then answer questions in threads like "what to do now that Cricfy stopped working" on Reddit r/AndroidTVApps and r/IndiaTech.

**Before when** : the event calendar is the traffic calendar. The 2027 IPL usually kicks off in late March, so you need to be live and have your keywords in place by mid-March.

**What would mean I misread it** : ① Apple starts mass-removing shell apps with "Cricfy" in the name. That would mean this route has been shut down, and the value of copying it drops with it. ② Conversely, if Sultan Al Nuaimi's app saw its weekly new ratings climb into the thousands during 2027's IPL season and showed up with in-app purchase revenue on the Top Grossing chart, it would mean the money under this search term is bigger than it looks, with room beyond the leaders. ③ If the original CricFy ships an official iOS web version or is shut down for good, and search interest falls off, then the demand itself is gone.

Where users come from

- **Verified** **App Store search hijacks the brand term** : the name, subtitle (Live Cricket TV HD Streaming), and description all center on CricFy and Live Cricket TV. Searching "cricfy" in the India iTunes store ranks it #2.

- Inferred **Riding platform events** : 2026-01-30 the Delhi HC issued a T20 World Cup blocking order against JioStar that named CricFy; Play Protect remotely uninstalled CricFy; the T20 World Cup started 02-07; many people on Reddit were looking for "Cricfy alternatives" and an "iPhone version." None of these events has been verified as actually driving its downloads.

- Inferred **Rating prompts** : 566 ratings have only 6 written reviews, 5 of which are one-star, yet the star average is 4.1.

- **Verified** **Small-country category charts** : Botswana with 0 ratings still ranks #26 on the Sports Top Free chart, and Malta, Guyana, Madagascar, and others have charted too.

- Inferred **Ads, TikTok, X, media** : TikHub and x-radar found no content promoting it; no ads in the ad libraries.

## CricFy TV: Live Cricket TV (iOS id6756000812) research report

> 2026-11-06. Data from our appstore / googleplay libraries (2026-10-28 to 11-06), the iTunes lookup / RSS review endpoints, the App Store page (read via Jina), and Jina web search.

### One line

This is an iOS cricket scores clone that borrows the name of the pirated sports-streaming APK brand "CricFy TV." The store subtitle reads "Live Cricket TV HD Streaming," but inside there are only scores, schedules, news, and ICC rankings, monetized with interstitial ads. Users come because they search "Cricfy" on the App Store. The real CricFy exists only as an Android APK; there is no iOS version at all.

### First, correcting the data card

- **Developer** : both the App Store and the iTunes lookup show **Nayan Akbari** (the seller name matches, developer id 1809062567), not BHAGVANBHAI BOGHANI as the card says. The latter is behind a different app, "CricFy TV: Live All Sports" (id 6785776914,2026-07-11).

- **The scale is smaller than the card suggests** : the card's "total ratings 1,263–1,537, down 250 in 9 days" adds together multiple countries and even a different app with the same name. Broken down by store (appstore library, app_day), over those 9 days India rose from 544 to 566 (+22), Nepal went 133→136, Pakistan 86→88, and the UAE 218→218. Every store is slowly climbing, with no sign of a cleanup. Across stores the total is about 1,116 ratings, +18 in the last 7 days (appstore library app_profile, aggregated by app_id). iTunes lookup numbers from the same day: India 566, US 130, Nepal 136, Pakistan 88.

- **Charts** : best India Sports Top Free rank was #14, and the App Store page showed #41 that day; Nepal's best was #12. No Top Grossing records.

- **Versions** : 1.0 shipped on 2025-12-03, got two updates in December, then only 2026-06-12 2.0.2 (release notes say "Minor API key changes"). Essentially no ongoing maintenance.

### 1. Why it took off

#### The demand comes from a pirated APK brand, and there's no legit version on iOS

- CricFy TV is a free pirated sports-streaming APK that is very popular in South Asia and East Africa, distributed only through download sites like cricfy.net and cricfytv.su. Those sites themselves state there's no official iOS version, and suggest jailbreaking or third-party stores (cricfy.net/ios-408, cricfytv.su). YouTube is full of "How to get CricFy TV on iPhone" tutorials that also say it can't be found on the App Store (youtube.com/watch?v=HYJjYiNXZwc).

- So when iPhone users search "Cricfy" on the App Store, they get nothing but same-named clones. Searching cricfy in the India region via the iTunes search API, the top results in order are: Cricfy TV: Live Sports (Sultan Al Nuaimi, 2,157 ratings), **this app (566)** , CricFy TV: Live All Sports (63), and Cricfy Football Live TV Score (1,207).

#### Timing: launched right as the licensed option was suppressed and a big tournament hit

- This app launched 2025-12-03.

- Around 2026-01-30, the Delhi High Court issued a real-time blocking order to JioStar for the T20 World Cup (which started 2026-02-07) that named CricFy (jiostar.com press release, indiankanoon.org/doc/163298557, MediaNama 2026-02-05, Reddit r/IndiaTech "CricFy & Other Piracy sites/Apps Face Instant Block").

- At about the same time, Google Play Protect flagged CRICFy as harmful and remotely uninstalled it from phones and TVs (theend.africa "Google Purges Piracy Apps Starting With Cricfy"; Reddit r/AndroidTVApps "CricfyTV stopped working" "Cricfy Trojan virus").

- The worse the original works, the more people search for "Cricfy alternatives" and "Cricfy iPhone." That search volume was driven by the pirated brand, and the clone app simply catches the spillover. Afterward, the IPL, the 2026 football World Cup, and national cricket series kept the demand going.

#### Traffic comes from store search and keywords; no paid acquisition or influencers seen

- The name pairs the brand term "CricFy TV" with the high-frequency term "Live Cricket TV"; the subtitle is "Live Cricket TV HD Streaming"; the description is stuffed with IPL / World Cup / T20 / PSL / BBL / CPL. Traffic is essentially all App Store search.

- Searching "cricfy tv iphone" on TikHub turns up no videos promoting this app; what comes up are Android APK recommendations and East African creators setting up cricfy on projectors. x-radar recorded 0 posts mentioning "cricfy" in the last 90 days. No evidence of ad buying was found (the ad libraries only track products on their watchlist, so not finding it there doesn't prove no spend).

- It charts in many countries (32–56 on the card), mainly because small-country Sports Top Free charts have low bars: Botswana with 0 ratings still ranks #26.

#### Why the ratings look fine but users don't stick

- 566 ratings averaging 4.1. But only 6 ratings include written reviews, and 5 of those are one-star: "Scam / Ads only," "ads on every tap," "Fraud" (iTunes RSS, India store). A Polish-store review page also has someone writing, "Its a fake app it does not show any cricket or scores even its just shows ads."

- The star ratings and the text reviews don't match. Most likely the rating prompt fired right after install, and people who had just installed it tapped high scores. This is a guess, not verified.

- Users came for live matches and got only a score board, so retention is bound to be poor. The money came from one-off interstitial ads, which depend on new people searching in constantly.

### 2. What's the differentiation

**There is essentially no product differentiation.** Scores, fixtures and standings are all done better by Cricbuzz, Cricinfo and FanCode, and all of them are free. Its only 'differentiation' is the name: it owns the brand term 'CricFy TV' plus the keyword 'Live Cricket TV'. Several bigger shells sit on the same term (see competitors), so within its category it's nothing special, just one of the top few. It runs not because of differentiation but because the brand term has traffic and there's no official version on iOS.

| Cricbuzz / Cricinfo / FanCode | iOS | 2010 / 2011 / 2018 | Cricbuzz India storefront 340k rating, +7 in 2,456 days; FanCode 45k | Legitimate score products; users come for scores, not for 'live streaming' |
| JioHotstar / FanCode streaming | big tech | — | JioHotstar about 1.99M rating in the India storefront | Official streaming, paid |
| The 'CricFy' shell matrix on Google Play | Android | 2025-10 to 2026-09 | com.vgoal.moviebox 390k installs; com.footballtvhd.cricfy 350k; CricFy: Soccer Live Scores 210k (+7k in 12 days); CricFy-TV: Live Football (2026-09-28) 83k (+7k in 42 days) (googleplay database) | The same playbook on Android is far bigger; on iOS it's a small slice |

### Growth channels

- **App Store search squatting on the brand term (confirmed)** : app name, subtitle and description are all built around 'CricFy', 'Live Cricket TV' and 'HD Streaming'; searching 'cricfy' in iTunes ranks it #2.

- **Riding a platform event (the event is confirmed; its effect on downloads is not verified)** : the 2026-01/02 Delhi HC ban and Play Protect cleanup of the original app, plus the T20 World Cup (2026-02-07 to 03-08).

- **Incentivized ratings (speculation)** : 566 ratings with only 6 written reviews; the written reviews are almost all one-star, yet the star average is 4.1.

- **Small-country category charts (confirmed)** : charting in the Sports free chart in Botswana, Guyana, Malta, Madagascar and similar countries, where a few downloads are enough to get on the chart.

- **One developer spreading multiple utility apps (confirmed)** : Nayan Akbari also has Status Saver (2,238 rating) and Where is my Train : Live (2026-08), the latter copying a same-named app by Snehal Sangani with a 8,980 rating.

- No ads, TikTok, X or press coverage found.

### How many people have seen it

**Almost nobody knows about it.** No public revenue figures; no press or big accounts have written about this app. What got coverage was the original pirated APK. But the approach is already a red ocean: at least 6 same-named shells on iOS, at least 7 on Play, the largest with 390k installs.

### What to borrow

1. **When the original product gets suppressed, squat its brand term** : a product that exists only on one platform, or is being suppressed, gets its name taken on platforms where it doesn't exist (here, iOS).

2. **The event calendar is the traffic calendar** : launch before the T20 World Cup, IPL, or the football World Cup to catch the spike.

3. **Small-country category charts have a low bar** , enough to look like you're charting in dozens of countries.

4. **Risks** : the name is someone else's brand, and a pirated brand at that, while the description implies live streaming. Negative reviews center on 'scam', so Apple could pull it at any time for misleading users or trading on another's name. The money is one-off ad revenue that doesn't retain users.

### Unknowns

- Actual downloads and ad revenue (Apple doesn't disclose; from 7 days and +18 ratings the volume looks very small).

- Whether they bought Apple Search Ads on the brand term (no data).

- Whether the high star ratings were pulled by a prompt.

- Whether developers Nayan Akbari, Snehal Sangani, Namrata Akabari and BHAGVANBHAI BOGHANI are one studio (they share Gujarati surnames and heavily overlapping app categories, but there's no evidence).
