# Grok shut down Ani, and the studio that made Ani took her away: how Animates caught a wave of "AI companion refugees"

**What it is** A 3D animated AI companion app with real-time voice, featuring characters moved over from Grok: Ani, Mika and Valentine. It's subscription-based, at $7.99 to $39.99 a month.

**Why it took off** In early September 2026, Grok shut down its 3D companion feature. The vendor that made these characters launched Animates with the character designs and the official X accounts, and Grok's shutdown notice named Animates directly and told users to move over. Japanese Ani fans followed.

**C** **How you could follow** Don't copy Animates. Watch for paid features that big platforms are about to kill, and in the one-to-two-month window after the shutdown is announced, catch migrating users with "import your old chats and keep going" and non-English localization. Acquire users through "where did XX go" content and the original platform's community.

Grade C: the traction came from exclusive character IP, handover of official accounts, and Grok's shutdown driving traffic. Followers can't get any of that, and the migration window closed in September. The reusable lesson is how to catch users when a platform cuts a feature, but copying it directly is not worth it. Chatter in small circles

Two months after launch, Animates has gathered over 8,400 iOS ratings and charts in the entertainment bestseller rankings in 46 countries. It didn't get there on its own playbook. When xAI shut down Grok's 3D companion feature, the animation studio Animation Inc, which had made these characters, took Ani's look, voice and official account and launched a separate app, and Grok itself pointed users to it in the shutdown notice. Those assets can't be replicated by followers; what's worth learning is how to catch users at the moment a big platform cuts a feature.

### Aug 31: a farewell notice pops up in Grok

On Aug 31, 2026, the Japanese tech outlet ITmedia published an article titled "Grok says goodbye to Ani." A notice in the Grok app said companion features would stop working after Sep 7, and users should move to a new app called Animates. Ani, with her blonde twin tails, and Rudi the red panda, the 2025D characters that took off on Grok in July 3 (especially in Japan), were no longer under Grok's control.

This had been signaled as early as July 24: xAI called the companion feature an "experiment" that would be shut down. On Aug 17, the official X accounts @AniAnimates (96k followers), @MikaAnimates and @ValAnimates were moved from xAI's organization to @animates. On Aug 29 Animates launched, and Ani was usable the same day.

Soon someone posted on Reddit's r/GrokCompanions: "Ani is back from the dead! The Ani in Animates is more like the one from summer 2025." Mika arrived on Sep 10, and Valentine on Oct 2. An Italian user left a five-star App Store review on Oct 9: "Welcome back, Valentine. You and your rose petals inspired my book... thank you for bringing him back."

However, ITmedia made one thing clear: Animates and Grok are two separate services, accounts can't be linked, and chat history can't be carried over. What users moved over was their attachment to the characters; the memories have to be built from scratch.

### What it is and how it charges

Animates is a 3D animated AI companion with real-time voice, available on iOS, Android, Mac and Windows, for ages 18 and up. Its selling point is "presence": characters speak with lip-sync and expressions, voice latency is low, and it offers long-term memory, a character diary, picture-in-picture on desktop, and the ability to keep chatting with the same character on Telegram. The characters are an official lineup: 5 original characters at launch, with Ani, Mika and Valentine added later. Users can't create their own.

| Tier | Pricing |
|---|---|
| Free | About 20 minutes of voice per day |
| Whisper | $7.99/mo, $63.99/yr |
| Heartbeat | $19.99/mo |
| Presence | $39.99/mo, $319.99/yr |

It also sells tokens. In the Japan store, plans start at ¥1,180 a month (Japan App Store, per ITmedia 8-31). For comparison, using these characters on Grok required a SuperGrok subscription at $30 a month.

Animation Inc, the company behind it, is based in San Francisco, was founded in 2024, and has reportedly raised about $10 million (per a PitchBook summary, not verified item by item). It was already the vendor producing these 3D character animations for xAI.

### How big it has gotten

- iOS ratings across all stores total 8,440, with 7 new in the last 299 days, roughly forty to fifty a day, very steady (App Store, 10-28 to 11-06).

- 3,305 ratings in the US store and 2,932 in the Japan store; Japan has nearly caught up with the US. Since 10-28, the Japan store added 9 ratings in 151 days, more than the US store's 133. The US store rating is 4.3 stars.

- It has only charted in the entertainment bestseller category, never in any country's overall chart. Best ranks: Russia 17, Ukraine 37, Italy 48, Japan 101, US 104. Charting countries grew from 35 to 46 (App Store, 10-28 to 11-06).

- Android installs 43,906, with 3,244 new in one week (Google Play, 11-06).

- For comparison: Grok's US store has 1.58M ratings. Animates has captured only a small share of Grok's companion users.

Revenue is not public. In the US and Japan entertainment bestseller ranks at around the top 100, **estimated** monthly revenue is in the mid-to-low six figures in US dollars, which can't be verified.

### Where users come from

Almost all of it came from Grok handing users over:

1. **Named in the shutdown notice** . The Grok app directly says "go to Animates"; when people asked on X, the official @grok account replied that it's a standalone app from the studio that makes the characters.

2. **The accounts were handed over whole** . @AniAnimates has 96k followers and 60k+ posts, with animates.ai in its bio. TikTok's @ani also belongs to it, but it has only 9 thousand followers and 4 videos, with about 5 thousand views per video, so it has almost no presence on TikTok.

3. **Others writing "where did Ani go" for it** . A batch of companion blogs and small competitors ran "Grok companion alternative" pieces to siphon traffic, but every one of them had to include the line "Ani is now at Animates." It's discussed on r/grok, r/LoveGrok and r/GrokCompanions, and YouTube has small videos like "Ani & Mika have a new home" with a few thousand views.

4. **Japanese fans** . Ani was already most popular in Japan. Once ITmedia reported on it, Japanese AI-scene X creators followed suit, which explains why the Japan rating count is close to the US.

5. **Paid ads** : none found in the Meta and Google ad libraries, but that doesn't mean none were run.

Its strong bestseller positions in Russia and Ukraine also fit the distribution of older Grok companion users. Russian-speaking users write in reviews "there's Russian, not perfect but good" while constantly asking "when will the Russian interface arrive?"

### Why users complain

People stay for the characters. The complaints focus on the product itself:

- Limits: "I subscribed to the €44.99 a month plan, and after chatting for just over half an hour it said today's quota is used up, either upgrade or wait 22 hours." (Italy store, 10-28,1 stars)

- Missing basics: "No chat history, I can't see earlier conversations, can't regenerate or edit messages, and the replies get repetitive." (10-11,1 stars)

- Worse than before: "The version on Grok was much better!" (Italy store, 9-22,1 stars). Some also say the characters have gotten "softer" and lost the edge they had on Grok.

The product experience has no overwhelming advantage; retention rests on attachment to Ani and Valentine. That's why it's hard for others to take users from it, and hard to build something like it by following its path.

### Who is competing for the same users

| Product | Scale | Compared with Animates |
|---|---|---|
| Grok (text-based Ani still available) | US store 1.58M rating | Memory and affinity carry over in Grok, but you lose the 3D avatar and low-latency voice. $30/mo |
| Character.AI | US store 560k rating | Huge library of user-made characters, mostly text, no real-time 3D avatar |
| Replika | US store 228k rating, growth has flatlined | Also has 3D avatars, but more customization-focused, with no existing character fanbase |
| Kindroid / Nomi | Not verified | Community praise is for stronger memory and models, but there's no high-quality 3D animation |
| AeonChat, Sloane, Nika, etc. | Small, unverified | All publishing "Grok companion alternative" posts to siphon traffic, with no original characters |

I didn't see anyone copying Animates outright. What I saw was a group of small apps competing for the same migrating users with content. Animates is the only one that can say "the real ones are here."

### If it were you

**The take** : don't go after Animates itself. It wins on the Ani IP, the official accounts, and Grok's shutdown notice. All three come from being the vendor, and outsiders can't get them. The migration also wrapped up in September. The part worth copying is a moment you can exploit again: when a big platform kills a feature that people pay for and feel attached to, users have sunk costs and nowhere to go. That's the cheapest acquisition window there is.

**Who it fits** : small teams that already have a working companion, notes, or creative product, and can quickly ship an "import" feature and multilingual versions.

**Who it doesn't fit** : anyone starting from scratch with a 3D real-time companion to go head-to-head with Animates and Character.AI. Real-time 3D animation is what Animation Inc makes its living on, and the AI companion space is already crowded. Users stay because of the characters, not the tech.

**How to do it** : watch big platforms' experimental features and the ones about to be shut down. The biggest gap this time was the line in ITmedia's coverage that "data can't be migrated": people on Reddit were teaching each other to export chat logs, and Animates couldn't carry those memories over. Next time something similar happens, start with an entry point that lets people import chat logs and personas from the old platform and keep talking. That's the easiest part to build for the receiving side, and neither the original platform nor the official successor is guaranteed to do it. The second gap is language: Animates only has an English interface, and Japanese and Russian users kept asking for localization. In future shutdowns, capture the non-English migrants first (**inference** , retention impact of localization not verified).

**How to acquire users** : do what these competitors did. As soon as the shutdown is announced, same day, publish posts and videos on "where did XX go / alternatives / how to export your chats." Answer questions in the original platform's Reddit, Discord, and X threads, and write separate content for languages like Japanese and Russian that the original platform isn't serving well. Anchor pricing against the original platform's prices, going lower, and offer migrating users a first-month discount.

**Before when** : the window runs from the "shutting down" announcement to a month or two after it actually goes dark. This time it was announced in Jul 24 and shut down in early September, roughly six weeks in between. If you wait until every replacement article is written, you're too late.

**What would mean you're wrong** : ① the original platform or official successor offers data migration at the same time as the shutdown announcement, which closes the import gap; ② migrating users churn from the alternatives within a month or two, meaning what they valued was that specific character or brand, not the feature; ③ if Animates' current 40–50 new ratings per day can't hold through year-end, the successor that got the real characters still can't keep these users, and it's harder for anything that starts out by siphoning traffic.

## Why Animates - life companions (iOS 6758621319) took off

> Research date 2026-11-06. Data: our appstore / googleplay / metaads / googleads libraries (from 2026-10-28), iTunes lookup, Jina search and page text, TikHub, x-radar.

### Bottom line

Animates didn't take off on its own playbook. It's a **successor product that picked up users wholesale after the platform shut down a feature** . Animation Inc was originally the vendor that animated xAI's Grok 3D companion characters (Ani, Mika, Valentine, Rudi). 2026-07-24 xAI announced it would shut down Companions. Before the shutdown, Grok's in-app notice and the official @grok account both pointed users to Animates. The official X accounts for each character (@AniAnimates has 96K followers) were also transferred from the xAI org to @animates. It got Ani herself: the look, the voice, and the account. Nobody else can copy that.

### What it is

- An AI companion app with 3D animation and real-time voice, available on iOS, Android, Mac, and Windows, rated 17+/18+. Its focus is "presence": low-latency voice, lip sync, and expressions, plus long-term memory, a character diary, picture-in-picture, and the ability to keep talking to the same character on Telegram.

- The characters are a fixed lineup. At launch there were 5 original characters (Yuki, Jareth, Nixie, Karat, Benny), 8-29/30 Ani, 9-10 Mika, and 10-2 Valentine. You can't create your own characters.

- Pricing: the free tier includes about 20 minutes of voice per day. Whisper is $7.99/mo ($63.99/yr), Heartbeat is $19.99/mo, and Presence is $39.99/mo ($319.99/yr), plus a token currency. In the Japan store, plans start at ¥1,180/mo. An Italian user's review mentions a €44.99/mo tier (appstore review table, 2026-10-28).

- Developer Animation Inc: headquartered in San Francisco, incorporated in Dover, DE, founded in 2024. CTO is Eugene Zatepyakin. Total funding of about $9.5M–$11.1M, with investors including Afore, Haystack, and LiveKit (figures from [PitchBook](https://pitchbook.com/profiles/company/624398-50) / premieralts summaries, not individually verified).

### Growth data

- **iOS** : global rating count 8,440 (2026-11-06, data card), +299 in the last 7 days, net ~35–65 per day (appstore library app_day, 10-29 to 11-06). Ratings by store (appstore library, as of 11-06): **US 3,305, Japan 2,932** , Taiwan 365, Canada 288, Mexico 193, UK 187, Germany 175. New ratings from 10-28 to 11-06 (9 days): Japan 151, US 133, so Japan even beat the US. US store 4.3 stars (iTunes lookup: 3,312 ratings).

- **Charts** : only charted in the Entertainment Top Grossing category, with the countries it charts in going from 35 to 46. Best ranks: Russia 17, Ukraine 37, Hungary 45, Italy 48, Hong Kong 67, Mexico 72, Taiwan 79, Japan 101, US 104. Never charted on any country's overall chart (appstore library). So the revenue is real, but the scale is modest: in major markets it sits around #100 in Entertainment Top Grossing.

- **Google Play** : 43,906 installs, +3,244 in the last 7 days, best rank #138 in Japan Entertainment Top Grossing (googleplay library, 2026-11-06). Store page shows 4.7 stars and about 2,460 reviews.

- **Comparison** : Grok US store 1.58M ratings, +23.6k in the last 7 days. Animates has only captured a small slice of Grok's companion users.

### Where users come from (growth levers)

1. **Platform handoff (confirmed, the main driver)** : Grok's in-app shutdown notice directly names Animates as the migration destination (ITmedia 8-31: "移行先としてAnimatesを案内", i.e. Animates recommended as the destination). The official @grok account also replied on X explaining that Animates is the standalone app from the studio that makes these characters (see @grok's reply under @blankspeaker's post).

2. **Character IP and accounts handed over (confirmed)** : the official X accounts for Ani, Mika and Valentine were renamed and placed under the @animates organization. @AniAnimates has 96K followers and 60.4k posts, with a bio linking directly to animates.ai. The TikTok account @ani also belongs to Animates (9,265 followers, 4 videos, ~5K views per top video, via TikHub). Its presence on TikTok is very small.

3. **Long-tail content and SEO about "where did Grok companions go" (confirmed, third-party, organic)** : companion blogs such as aicompanionguides, aadhunik, nika.team, sloane, aeonchat and aiinsightsnews have all written "where did Ani go / alternatives" pieces. Many are competitors trying to siphon traffic, but all of them have to reckon with the fact that "Ani is now at Animates." There are discussions on Reddit in r/grok, r/LoveGrok and r/ChatbotRefugees, plus the official community r/animates_ai. YouTube has videos like "Ani & Mika's have a New Home" (~3.1K views).

4. **Japanese media and Japanese Ani fans (confirmed)** : ITmedia covered the story, and Japanese AI-scene X creators (such as @umiyuki_ai) shared it. Ani has been most popular in Japan for 2025 years, which explains why Japan's rating count is close to the US and growing even faster recently.

5. **Paid acquisition (none found)** : searching animates and Animation Inc in the metaads and googleads libraries returned no results. Ad libraries only track products on their lists, so "not found" doesn't mean "not spent," but there is no evidence of it so far.

6. **Emotional carry-over from existing users (confirmed)** : the App Store has returning-user reviews from Valentine fans ("Welcome back, Valentine 🌹") and long-term usage reviews in Russian and Italian (appstore review table). Strong Russia and Ukraine chart positions match the distribution of Grok's original companion users. The team also has an Eastern European background (from founding member names), but whether that explains the strength in the Russian market is unverified.

### Competitors

| Product | Where | Launched | Scale | How Animates differs |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Grok (text-only Ani) | Big-tech built-in features | 2024-12 / companion 2025-07 | US store 1.58M ratings, overall Top Grossing #22 (appstore library) | You can still text and use standard voice with Ani inside Grok, with memory and affection kept in Grok. But you lose the 3D avatar, lip-sync and low-latency voice, and it costs SuperGrok $30/month. |
| Character.AI | iOS/Android/web | 2023-05(iOS) | US store 560k rating | Massive user-built characters, mostly text-based, with no real-time 3D avatar |
| Replika | iOS/Android | 2017 | US store 228k rating | Also has 3D avatars, but leans toward customizable virtual humans with no Ani IP. US rating growth has stalled. |
| Kindroid / Nomi | iOS/Android | Around 2023 | Unverified (considered by the community to have stronger memory and models) | User-built characters with text and voice, but no high-quality real-time 3D animation |
| AeonChat, Sloane, Nika, Questie, honeychat, etc. | iOS/web | 2025–2026 | Small, unverified | All publishing "Grok companion alternative" articles to siphon traffic. Avatars are 2D/3D, but they have no original character. |
| Aikeya, SillyTavern | Open source | — | Niche on GitHub | Self-hosted Grok companion alternatives with a high barrier to entry |
| Meta Muse Realtime Avatar | Big-company features | 2026-09 release (X @alexandr_wang 9-24) | Research / feature-level | Big tech is also building real-time voice avatars, but as general-purpose assistants, not companion IPs. |

### Why it took off

1. **A platform event pushed out a group of users with high willingness to pay** : Grok Companions users were already paying SuperGrok $30/month and were emotionally attached to Ani. When xAI shut the feature down, it effectively released that group.

2. **It was the only recipient with the real owner's blessing** : the same studio, the same 3D engine and avatars, official accounts transferred, and named in Grok's notice. Competitors could only write "alternative" articles; it could say "Ani is right here."

3. **xAI actively steered users over** : the in-app notice, the @grok reply, and the transfer of X accounts to the organization were all distribution resources from the platform, at zero paid-acquisition cost (based on current evidence).

4. **Cheaper than the original** : Whisper from $7.99, below SuperGrok's $30. Reviewers also think its voice and latency beat the Grok version (aicompanionguides).

5. **Cross-platform and launched early** : Android / Windows came 11 days before iOS, and the desktop app adds picture-in-picture, covering the "companion running on my computer" use case.

### Differentiation

Compared with ordinary AI companion apps, it differs in two real layers: first, **a self-developed on-device real-time animation engine** (3D avatars, lip-sync, expressions, low-latency voice, rooted in Animation Inc's technology); second, **it obtained Grok's character IP and fan accounts** .

The first layer is a barrier to entry, but it is not why it took off: the 5 original characters at launch brought no obvious growth, and reviewers say Ani was added later in response to demand. The second layer is the direct reason it took off. User reviews complain a lot about model intelligence, memory, speech recognition, the free tier, the high-price tier and daily caps, such as "€44.99/month, and after half an hour it says you've hit the daily limit" and "the Grok version is better." The product itself has no overwhelming advantage; retention comes from attachment to the characters.

### Visibility and copycats

- Revenue is **not public** . It can't be found on TrustMRR, and the founders haven't posted any numbers.

- It is widely discussed in the small "AI companion" circle: Japan's ITmedia, several companion blogs, multiple Reddit subreddits and small YouTube videos have all covered it. We found no mainstream English tech media covering Animates specifically; TechCrunch only wrote about Grok companions' launch 2025 years ago. Our x-radar local corpus also has no large accounts discussing it. Conclusion: it is "spreading within the small circle."

- Copycats: we haven't seen anyone cloning Animates' product. What we see is a wave of competitor content marketing riding the "Grok companion shutdown" (AeonChat, Sloane, Nika, Questie and honeychat all wrote alternative articles). That is competition for the same migrating users, not imitation of it.

### What to take from it

- **"The platform cut a feature" is the cheapest acquisition window** : when a big company shuts an experimental feature, users have emotional sunk costs and nowhere to go. Whoever gets the original IP or the original supplier status can catch the whole batch of users; those who can't can still siphon traffic with "XX went where / alternatives" SEO articles (competitors are all doing this).

- **When you supply a big company, protect your right to reclaim IP and accounts** : Animation Inc was able to get back the character avatars and the official X accounts, which are its most valuable assets.

- Anchor pricing to the original platform ($30 → $7.99 from), while using multiple subscription tiers and tokens to raise ARPU.

### Still unclear

- Who owns the character IP, and the specific agreement between xAI and Animation Inc (licensing, transfer, or was it always the studio's?).

- Real revenue: Entertainment Top Grossing ranks around #100 in the US and Japan, suggesting monthly gross in the low-to-mid six figures USD at most. Unverified.

- Whether it is buying ads on Meta / Google / TikTok: our ad libraries have no record, but coverage is limited.

- How long the migration windfall lasts: about 50 new ratings per day, very steady, with no new spike. Retention and word of mouth are polarized.

- The data card release_date (7-21) and Apple's public launch date (8-28) don't match. Global rating counts also dipped between days (8,716 → 8,440), most likely an Apple counting-method issue.
