# A darts app charted in the UK and German Top Grossing for 20 after launching two months ago, but it isn't new: Autodarts and the Winmau behind it

**What it is** A darts app: your phone sits beside the board and scores automatically, and you can play live against people worldwide and enter tournaments. Premium features cost £5.99 a month.

**Why it took off** It wasn't built from scratch. Winmau's parent company bought the Autodarts community, which had 200k users, and the existing users moved to the new app together. Add PDC official backing, the Berlin IFA launch, and a batch of TikTok creators posting on launch day.

**C** **How you could follow** Don't compete with it in darts. Take the model of "a phone camera replaces dedicated scoring hardware, plus live play and a subscription" and apply it to sports with expensive equipment and amateur leagues, like pool, archery, or pickleball. Get the recognition accurate first, then acquire users with local creators posting demo videos on the same day and leagues giving away memberships.

Grade C: The growth came from acquired users, PDC backing, and big-company distribution, which followers won't have. Phone-camera scoring in darts is already crowded with Dartsmind, Darteer, and DartLens. The model is worth learning, but copying it directly isn't worth it. Publicly known / widely discussed

Autodarts has been out for two months and has reached the top 20 in the Sports Top Grossing charts on the App Store in the UK and Germany. It looks like a newly launched app, but it's actually a German DIY community that has been running for several years. The world's largest darts equipment company bought it, then relaunched it with 200k existing users and PDC official endorsement. The users and the brand were already in place, so followers can't get them. What's worth learning is something else: using one phone to replace hardware that costs several hundred euros.

### Sep 3, five darts creators posted videos on the same day

In 2026 Sep 3, darts equipment brand Winmau unveiled the "Autodarts ecosystem" at the IFA trade show in Berlin. The same day, at least five darts creators on TikTok posted videos almost simultaneously. @dartfuldodger's post said "Lens has landed… GAME CHANGER" and got 102k views. @topsandtales's post opened with "It's not been easy to keep this quiet… honoured" and got 86k views. A line like "it's been hard to keep quiet" suggests these videos were arranged in advance, though viewers can't tell whether they were paid.

The demo in the videos was simple: a phone on a tripod facing the board, and when a dart hits, the score on screen updates by itself. The feature is called Lens.

The app launched on iOS the day before (Sep 2), and Android a week earlier. The first reviews didn't read like new users'. A German user wrote on Sep 24: "2024 April, the first time I let AD count my darts." Another wrote on Sep 12: "Upgrading to ADv2 is great." Some were unhappy: "Since switching to the app, my Raspberry Pi 5 with three USB cameras is hit or miss." (German App Store reviews)

### What it was before

Autodarts was an open-source-style DIY project by German developer Timo Nolle: three USB cameras connected to a Raspberry Pi or computer, free software, and play against people worldwide on the web. A small ecosystem of sellers grew around it, selling camera mounts, light rings, and kits.

In 2025 Sep 8, Nodor, the parent company of Winmau and Red Dragon, acquired Autodarts. The price wasn't disclosed. At the time it had 85k players (BM Magazine). Nodor is controlled by private equity firm Inflexion. Winmau is the official board for PDC TV events, and it had just renewed a long-term deal at the start of 2026.

One year later, the app has three layers:

| Layer | What it is | Pricing |
|---|---|---|
| Free app | Scoring, practice, stats, online matchmaking, tournaments | Free; Lens 5 times a month (per reviews) |
| Plus | Unlimited Lens, plus several exclusive modes | £5.99/month, £59.99/year; mount plus one-year Plus bundle £59.99 |
| Autodarts X | Four-camera full kit, pre-orders in October, shipping in November | Through darts retailers |

At launch, the official site said 200k registered users and 40k Discord members (Winmau website, 09-04). Forbes and T3 both covered it. World No. 2 Gian van Veen appeared, and PDC referee Huw Ware recorded the score-reporting voice for the app.

### How big it is now

- iOS ratings across all stores: 10-28 is 699,11-06 is 873, up 114 in the last 7 days; charted countries grew from 25 to 37 (App Store, 10-28 to 11-06).

- UK Sports Top Grossing: 10-28 #59, 11-06 #19. Germany climbed from #30 to #13–19. Best in the Netherlands was #14.

- Android: 59,440 installs, 4,585 added in one week, best UK Sports Top Grossing rank #11 (Google Play, 11-06). The two platforms are similar in size, which suggests a whole group of darts players moved over together.

- 11-03 and 11-04 had the most new ratings in two days (30 and 24), and the countries charted jumped from 24 to more than 30 at the same time. The timing matches the Autodarts X shipping in November, and the 10-27 update that added the "Online" tab and public rooms. November also falls in the PDC's peak season. Which of these is the main driver is **inference** ; they can't be separated.

- For comparison, the leader: DartCounter is #1 in UK Sports Top Grossing, with an iOS rating of 37,471 and 2.58M Android installs. Autodarts' weekly new ratings have already passed half of DartCounter's, but its total is still far behind.

Revenue hasn't been disclosed, since Nodor is a private company. How many subscribers correspond to UK and German Sports Top Grossing #13–19 can't be calculated from outside.

### Why users stay, and why they complain

The reasons people stay are stated plainly in the reviews:

> "There are always thousands of people online to play. I used DartCounter before, and I switched to Autodarts because Lens scores automatically for a few pounds a month, and there are tournaments." (UK, 09-15,5 stars)

> "Much better than Dartsmind, and more people online than DartCounter." (UK, 09-05,5 stars)

Dedicated auto-scoring hardware like the Scolia costs €299–399, and the Target Omni costs €599.99. One phone plus £5.99 a month is enough for most amateur players. Add always having someone to play against, and that's what keeps people.

The complaints are also concentrated:

- Inaccurate recognition: "I hit the T20 above, and it recorded an S5." (UK, 10-07,1 stars) "Same phone, same light, same mount, and recognition is noticeably worse than Dartsmind." (Germany, 09-07,3 stars)

- Cheating: Lens misreads, and manual score edits are allowed, so online someone edits the dart that wins the leg. "Cheaters everywhere, far too easy to exploit." (UK, 10-21,1 stars)

- Price: "£60 is a bit expensive, Dartsmind costs a fifth of that and does more." (UK, 09-14,1 stars)

### Phone-camera scoring wasn't invented by it

| Product | Scale | Compared with Autodarts |
|---|---|---|
| DartCounter | UK Sports Top Grossing #1, Android 2.58 installs | The leader in online play; auto-scoring requires buying other hardware like the Target Omni |
| Dartsmind | German Top Grossing #23, Android 360k installs | Phone-camera scoring existed long before and is much cheaper; lacks the brand and player pool |
| Darteer.ai | Launched 2026-07, Android 19k installs | AI scoring from a small team, similar in kind, with no distribution |
| DartLens | Claims to be live 11-20, still taking waitlist sign-ups | iPhone only, on-device recognition, Pro €29.99/year, lifetime €59.99 (launch price for the first month, then €79.99); tagline "no extra cameras, no sensors in the board" (dartlens.net, 11-06) |

So "phone camera auto-scoring for darts" already has at least three players, and Dartsmind has been at it for years. Autodarts wins elsewhere: the biggest auto-scoring online lobby, PDC and Winmau branding, and a hardware path that scales up to a full board. A small team gets none of those three.

### If it were you

**One-line take** : don't go head-to-head with Autodarts. Its users and endorsements were bought or migrated in, and it's already well known in the darts scene. The model is what's worth copying: in a sport with gear, pro events and amateur leagues, use the phone camera to replace a few hundred euros of dedicated hardware, then use online play to keep people and subscriptions to get paid.

**Who it's for** : a small team of one or two who can build on-device vision; people who play a particular sport themselves and know the local leagues and gear shops.

**Who it's not for** : anyone who wants to fight head-on in darts. Three big players plus Dartsmind plus DartLens already crowd the space, and a lobby's network effect is something you can't catch up to. Also not for people who can't tune recognition accuracy: half the one-star reviews say "it misread my throw."

**How to build it** : pick a different sport. Pool (ball-pocketing detection, scoring, practice stats), archery (target scoring), table tennis or pickleball (landing spots and scores), golf putting practice are all scenarios where the dedicated gear is expensive but a phone can see it (**inference** ; the recognition difficulty of each sport is unverified). Get solo practice and scoring accurate first, since accuracy is the only real gate; then add friend matches and small tournaments; price like Autodarts and DartLens: a limited free tier, an annual plan and a lifetime one-time purchase. Build anti-cheating into online play from day one: manual score edits should be logged and visible to the opponent.

**How to get users** : run a scaled-down version of the Sep 3 playbook. Find TikTok creators in that sport with 10k to 100k followers and publish "phone scores for you" demo videos on the same day; the visual alone is a hook. Give 3 months of membership to members of local amateur leagues in exchange for their email and group chats; split revenue with small gear shops that sell stand bundles.

**When to be early** : pick a sport and launch 2 to 3 months before its peak season. The darts window has already closed. For other sports, check whether a big brand has already bought a similar community.

**What it means if you misread the market** : (1) In the sport you picked, equipment giants have already released their own phone-camera apps (like Winmau buying Autodarts); (2) if phone scoring reaches 95%+ accuracy and people still don't stick around, it means this sport's players don't care about automatic scoring; (3) if DartLens 11-20 had no movement on the UK charts one or two months after launch, even a mature category like darts can't sell plain phone scoring without a matchmaking pool, and a niche sport would be even harder.

## Why Autodarts: Darts Scorer (ios_6759263107) showed up in the results

> In one line: this isn't a new app built from scratch. Nodor (controlled by PE firm Inflexion), parent of darts equipment leader Winmau, bought the DIY auto-scoring community Autodarts 2025 years ago, moved its 200k registered users and 40k-person Discord into a native app (ADv2), then added a "phone camera auto-scoring" Lens and a £5.99/month subscription. It launched at IFA Berlin 2026-09, with PDC official partnership, world #2 Gian van Veen and PDC referee Huw Ware on stage, and TikTok creators posting videos on launch day. Its traction came from **migrating old users and brand resources** ; its differentiation is **"free Lens auto-scoring + an existing large online lobby"** , which is indeed what sets it apart from DartCounter and Dartsmind.

### 1. Basic data (appstore / googleplay libraries, 2026-10-28 to 11-06)

- Listed on the iOS App Store 2026-09-02, developer Autodarts GmbH, which publishes only these 1 apps. Free, with the Plus subscription as the in-app purchase.

- Global overall rating: 2026-10-28 was 699, by 11-06 it is 873; 7 new ratings in the last 114 days. Countries charting rose from 25 to 37 (data card).

- By country (app_day): in GB the Sports Top Grossing chart climbed from #10-28 on 59 to #11-06 on 19, with ratings going 293→336; in DE it went from #30 to #13~19, ratings 224→269; NL stayed between #14 and #45, best #14. On 11-03 and 11-04 global new ratings were 30 and 24, the highest in this data set, and countries charting jumped from 24 to 30~37.

- Google Play (googleplay library): `com.autodarts.play` listed 2026-08-24, 59,440 installs, +7 over the last 4,585 days; rating 861; best GB SPORTS Top Grossing rank #11; in-app purchases $6.49–$64.99. **Android and iOS are about the same size** , which suggests these users are darts players moving over as a whole, not a growth spurt from one platform.

- Benchmark: DartCounter is #1 on GB Sports Top Grossing, iOS rating 37,471, +7 over the last 78 days; Android installs 2.58M. Autodarts already adds more weekly iOS ratings than half of DartCounter's, but its installed base is far behind.

- Inference: the 11-03 and 11-04 surge lines up with the Autodarts X hardware shipping in November, and with the 11-03 2.1.0 update (TikTok @robbel3d 11-03's video mentions "2.1.0 put Board Manager back in the browser"). The PDC Grand Slam (November) and World Championship (December to January) are also darts' biggest seasons of the year; **not verified** .

### 2. Who they are: from DIY community to a big-company ecosystem

- Autodarts started as a German DIY auto-scoring project, founded by Dr. Timo Nolle. The setup: 3 USB cameras plugged into a Raspberry Pi or PC, free software, and web play on play.autodarts.io. The developer has said "the platform will stay free" ([dartn-forum post](https://www.dartn-forum.de/thread/28097-autodarts-io-steeldarterfassung-zum-selbermachen/), [autodarts.diy](https://autodarts.diy/)). A ring of small sellers grew up around it selling kits, stands and light rings, such as @gizzmogadget and @dart3d.shop on TikTok, and Etsy sellers.

- 2025-09-08, Nodor Group acquired Autodarts, price undisclosed. Nodor owns Winmau and Red Dragon and has been controlled by PE firm Inflexion since 2023. At the time of the acquisition Autodarts had 85k players worldwide ([BM Magazine](https://bmmagazine.co.uk/in-business/nodor-acquires-autodarts-automatic-scoring/)).

- Winmau is the official dartboard supplier for PDC televised events, and 2026-01 it renewed with a record-length deal ([dartsnews](https://dartsnews.com/pdc/winmau-announced-as-pdcs-new-dartboard-sponsor-in-record-five-year-deal), [Sportcal](https://www.sportcal.com/sponsorship/winmau-secures-record-breaking-10-year-pdc-extension/)). The app description states "PDC official partner" outright.

- 2026-09-03/04 launched the "Autodarts ecosystem" at IFA Berlin ([Winmau official news](https://winmau.com/blogs/news/winmau-redefines-the-future-of-darts-with-launch-of-autodarts-ecosystem), Business Wire release 2026-09-03, [Forbes 2026-09-10](https://www.forbes.com/sites/paullamkin/2026/09/10/winmau-and-autodarts-bring-smart-scoring-to-your-dumb-dartboard/), [T3](https://www.t3.com/tech/gaming/winmau-autodarts-makes-real-world-darts-a-multiplayer-online-game-anyone-can-enjoy-it-even-keeps-score-for-you)), in three layers:
    - **Free app** : scoring, practice, stats, online matchmaking and tournaments;
    - **Lens** : any phone or tablet pointed at any board auto-scores, not limited to Winmau boards;
    - **Autodarts X** : a four-camera full board, pre-orders in October, shipping in November.

- Pricing: Plus is £5.99 per month or £59.99 per year. Stand plus 12 months of Plus bundle £59.99 (regular price £79.99). The free tier of Lens has a usage cap; only Plus gives "unlimited Lens." Code JUSTPLAY gives 1 months of Plus. At launch the company said it had 200k registered users and 40k Discord members (Winmau official news 2026-09-04).

### 3. Competitors

| Product | Where | Launched | Scale | How it differs from Autodarts |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| DartCounter | iOS / Android / web | 2015(iOS) | GB Sports Top Grossing #1; iOS rating 37,471; 2.58M installs on Android | Leader in online play, but auto-scoring requires buying the Target Omni (about €600) or other hardware; no in-house phone-camera scoring; Premium about €5/month |
| Dartsmind | iOS / Android | 2015 (iOS), Android 2021 | DE Top Grossing #23; iOS DE rating 3,814; Android 360k | Already offers phone-camera auto-scoring, claimed accuracy 95%+, priced at about 1/5 of Autodarts' cost (one review says "£60 is too expensive, Dartsmind is 5 times cheaper with more features"); lacks the big brand, PDC endorsement and large online lobby |
| Scolia | Hardware + app | Years | Long-established auto-scoring hardware, €299–399 | Expensive dedicated hardware; one reviewer says Lens "nearly catches up with Scolia" |
| Target Omni | Hardware (connects to DartCounter) | 2025/26 | €599.99 | Rival Target's hardware route; Autodarts X is head-to-head with it |
| DartsOn | iOS / Android | 2025-09(iOS) | GB Top Grossing #67, iOS rating 398 | Plain scoring app, no auto-scoring |
| Darteer.ai | Android / iOS | 2026-07 | Android 19k installs, iOS DE rating 11 | Small-team AI camera auto-scoring, same positioning, but no distribution |
| Pose & Tracking for Darts | Android | 2026-01 | 59k installs | Motion analysis, not a versus platform |
| Plain scoring apps (Darts Club, Pro Darts, etc.) | iOS / Android | Years | Millions to tens of millions | Virtual darts games or manual scoring: not the same thing |

Takeaway: **"phone-camera auto-scoring" isn't new.** Dartsmind had it long ago. What's new with Autodarts is bundling it with "PDC official + a big online matchmaking pool + tournaments + a hardware upgrade path" in one app.

### 4. Growth tactics (with evidence)

1. **Migration of existing users (confirmed)** : 200k registered users and 40k Discord members moved from the web or Raspberry Pi version of ADv1 to the native ADv2 app. Reviews show it: "Super Update mit Applaunch… Update auf ADv2" (DE, 09-12); "Seit der Umstellung auf App ist Autodarts auf Raspberry Pi 5… Glückssache" (DE, 09-27,1 stars); "Bin schon ziemlich von Anfang an dabei" (DE, 10-22); "Im April 2024 habe ich meinen ersten Dart mit AD zählen lassen" (DE, 09-24) (appstore library, review table). This also explains how it collected about 700 ratings in the first two months after launch.

2. **Brand and event resources (confirmed)** : Winmau and PDC official backing, launched at IFA, with a Business Wire press release, covered by Forbes, T3, Sports Insight, and DartsWorld. World No. 2 Gian van Veen and PDC referee Huw Ware appear in it, and Huw Ware recorded a "Premium Caller" score-announcement voice for the app. Partnered with the amateur league ADC: members get 3 months of Plus, promoted via ADC's email, social channels, and website ([DartsWorld](https://dartsworld.com/2026/09/winmau-launches-autodarts-ecosystem-with-adc-at-heart/)).

3. **TikTok creators posted on launch day (confirmed, TikHub 2026-11-06 search)** : On launch day, 09-03, @dartfuldodger posted "Lens has landed… GAME CHANGER" (102k views); @topsandtales wrote "It's not been easy to keep this quiet… honoured" (86k views, very much like an ambassador deal); @themab501 (22k), @thedarthatter (23k), and @jordsdartsjourney (16k) also posted the same day. The official account @winmauofficial kept posting tutorials with Huw Ware and Gian van Veen; "Huw Ware demos Lens" got 45k views, "Autodarts X set up in three minutes" got 78k views. Retailers followed up with sales: @dartsturm.de (55k), @kissinger.dartshop, Tops Darts. Inference: this was coordinated creator posting; whether it was paid is **unverified** .

4. **Retail channels and hardware bundling (confirmed)** : Autodarts X and its stand were pre-sold through dart retailers (starting with dartsturm, 09-17), and buying the hardware leads users into an app subscription.

5. **Paid ads (not found)** : The googleads library watch table shows `no_ads` for 2026-11-02; metaads and tiktokads libraries have no advertiser for Autodarts or Winmau. The ad libraries only track products on our list, so not finding ads doesn't mean none were run.

6. **Free subscriptions and redemption codes (confirmed)** : JUSTPLAY gives 1 months, ADC membership gives 3 months, used to drive trials that then convert to paid subscriptions.

### 5. Why people stay and pay

- The online matchmaking pool is large: "always thousands of players online"; "used to play on Dartcounter but now switched to Autodarts as the Lens feature gives me Auto scoring for a few quid a month plus tournaments" (GB, 09-15,5 stars); the official line is 50k daily active players (a figure cited in search summaries, **unverified** ).

- It swaps hardware that costs several hundred euros for auto-scoring on "phone + tripod + £5.99 a month."

- The pain points are also clear: recognition isn't accurate, connections drop, cheating is possible (scores can be edited online), it requires iOS 18, and it costs more than Dartsmind. It reached #13–19 on the Top Grossing chart, but there are many one-star reviews.

### 6. Visibility and copycats

- Visibility: a large company's product with press releases, covered by Forbes and T3, and widely known in the darts community. Revenue is **not public** , and Nodor is a private company. This is not a small-team window of opportunity.

- Copycats: **DartLens** (TikTok @dartlens, 821 followers, bio reads "Score darts using your phone's camera… DartLens drops Nov 20", waitlist at dartlens.net, 11-04 posted "Always wanted autoscoring, but not the price tag?"). Darteer.ai and others were doing AI camera scoring even earlier and count as contemporary competitors.

### 7. What to borrow

- **"An open-source / DIY community grows users first, then gets acquired by an industry giant, branded, and subscription-ized"** : the community gave a cold-start base, the giant gave channels and trust.

- In **niche sports that need physical equipment** , "a phone camera replacing dedicated hardware" can cut prices from €300–600 to a few pounds a month. Camera recognition isn't the moat (Dartsmind had it first); **the online matchmaking pool and event backing are.**

- A launch-day playbook of "brand + athletes + referee voiceovers + coordinated creator posts + retailer sales + amateur league codes" can be copied for pool, table tennis, archery, golf putting, and similar sports with equipment, pro events, and amateur leagues.

### 8. Still unclear

- Revenue scale: how many subscriptions the #13–19 Sports Top Grossing ranks in GB and DE map to hasn't been converted; paid conversion rates on both platforms are unknown.

- The real cause of the 11-03 and 11-04 growth spurts: hardware shipments, 2.1.0 updates, or the PDC season. Which was dominant is unverified.

- Whether creators were paid, and whether Meta or Google ads were run (our ad libraries aren't tracking this product).

- The 200k registered users and "50k daily active" are both official figures.
