# "Che, bought a bucket of water for 500 pesos": an Argentine WhatsApp bookkeeping bot, and its nearly unused iPhone app

**What it is** An Argentine AI bookkeeping assistant. Send a sentence, a voice note, or a receipt photo in WhatsApp and it records the entry. Pesos, dollars, and crypto are all tracked together, and it connects directly to local wallets like Mercado Pago. The iPhone app is a dashboard added for existing users in August.

**Why it took off** It puts bookkeeping inside WhatsApp, which everyone keeps open all day, and solves the old problem of bookkeeping apps being abandoned after two days. It is also deeply localized for Argentina's chaotic currencies and wallets, and acquires users at no cost through the two founders' fintech network and local media. The app's Top Grossing rank is just a result of the low bar in a small-country chart.

**C** **How you could follow it** Don't copy the WhatsApp bookkeeping format; it's already crowded. If you're in a country where currencies and wallets are just as messy, borrow its approach: start with one-sentence entries, then connect local wallet transactions and local-currency payments.

Grade C: the approach is worth learning, but the chat-bookkeeping format has had more than a dozen similar products for 2026 years, and Argentina alone has five. Gasti has been running for two years and has only a little over 10,000 self-reported users, with no traction on the app side. Following it also requires local connections and payment integrations, so it's not worth the effort. Being discussed in small circles

Gasti is an AI bookkeeping assistant built by two Argentines. In Nov 2, its iPhone app first appeared on the Peru App Store Finance Top Grossing chart, debuting at #1. But at that point it had only 4 ratings worldwide, none of them in Peru. That chart position doesn't show the app took off. What actually ran was the WhatsApp bot it had been building for nearly two years, which the company says has more than 10,000 users. Below: what it did right, why the app side didn't catch on, and whether this path can still be followed today.

### One sentence sent to a "friend"

On 2025 Jan 30, Argentine tech outlet iProUP interviewed Nicolás Kenny, Gasti's technical partner. This is how he explained the product:

> "You can just write 'Che, bought a bucket of water for 500 pesos,' like texting a person. It fills in the category, description, currency, and date automatically."

He also explained why he built it: "I tried twenty-five thousand different bookkeeping apps and every time I ended up saying 'I can't do this.' Each time you have to remember to open the app, go in, enter the data… you stop after a day or two." WhatsApp, on the other hand, is always open: "I'm at my computer with WhatsApp open; I'm waiting in line at the corner store and I glance at my messages."

The biggest problem with bookkeeping apps is that users can't keep it up. Gasti's approach is to avoid making people open a separate app and instead put bookkeeping in a chat window everyone already has open every day.

### What it is

Users send Gasti text, voice notes, or receipt photos on WhatsApp. It records each entry in the ledger and shows budgets, subscriptions, goals, and monthly spending on the web or in the app. It was built specifically for Argentines and does things foreign bookkeeping apps can't:

- **Records pesos, official dollars, "crypto dollars," and USDT together** , converted at the day's rate. In Argentina, income in dollars and spending in pesos is completely normal.

- **Direct transaction feeds from local wallets and banks** : Mercado Pago, Galicia, Wallbit, Ripio. The free plan syncs once a month, Pro weekly, Premium daily.

- **Subscriptions can be paid in pesos** : since January 2025, you can pay with Mercado Pago in pesos, without needing a dollar card.

- Shared two-person ledgers, group expense splitting, and the latest version 2.0.4 (11-05) adds "today's credit card promotions."

Pricing (gasti.pro/planes, 11-06): the website charges via Stripe at Pro $6.99/month and Premium $9.99/month. In the app, prices are 20–30% higher: Pro is $8.49/month or $79.99/year. There is also a "lifetime" option that can only be purchased through WhatsApp support: Pro $300, Premium $400, labeled on the page as "limited time, manual approval." Taken together, this suggests most revenue comes from the website and WhatsApp, with the App Store accounting for a small share.

The iPhone app launched in Aug 2026 1. The company's Aug 14 announcement on LinkedIn said: "Over a year, more than ten thousand people have used Gasti through WhatsApp… We're a small team, 100% organic growth." So the app is a dashboard for existing users, not a new product.

### Top Grossing #1 but only 4 ratings

Its rankings on the Finance Top Grossing charts of each App Store (daily App Store chart, 10-28 to 11-06):

| Country | Rank change | Local ratings |
|---|---|---|
| Peru | 11-02 debuted at #1, then 5 → 14 → 30 → 36 | 0 |
| Chile | 11-05 #16,11-06 #26 | 0 |
| Argentina | 10-28 #42,10-31 #34,11-06 dropped to #177 | 4 |

It hit the top of the chart the day it charted, then slid down a little each day. That pattern most likely means a day with one or two subscription sales (inferred). The finance Top Grossing chart in small storefronts like Peru and Chile has a very low bar: one $79.99 annual subscription is enough to reach the front. Global ratings went from 2 at the end of October to 4 by November 4 (11-06 Apple API shows 5). Going by that, the App's downloads are tiny.

So don't read these chart positions as "it's taking off in Latin America." The App isn't the thing that took off. The bot behind it did, and only to the extent of "a bit of buzz in Argentina's tech circles."

### Where users came from: two insiders, zero ad spend

Both founders were already in Argentina's fintech scene. Nicola Romero Gerik is Venezuelan, was a product manager at crypto exchange Buenbit, and is now head of AI at brokerage Balanz. He isn't a programmer; he pieced together the first version of the bot with AI, originally planning to run it on Telegram. Kenny is a college student and full-stack developer who joined after being drawn in by that "zero version." The website signs off as "from Buenos Aires and Caracas."

The acquisition channels I can confirm are these:

1. **Word of mouth in the circle.** In the iProUP interview, of the 2,000 users registered at the time, "a large share came from recommendations by tech and fintech influencers," with about 40k logins the previous week. Romero's pinned X post is a live demo the two of them did, and his most-viewed post has 47k views (2026-09-01).

2. **Local tech media.** iProUP and A24 covered it on 2025-01-30 the same day, and it later got a TV interview and podcast appearances. In 2026 it was shortlisted for Premios Tech.La, "Best Product Strategy in Argentina and Latin America."

3. **Cross-promotion with other small tools.** Premium bundles another WhatsApp reminder bot, RecordAi. There's also a rewards program that gives users discounts at local brands, pitched as "the money you save covers the subscription."

4. **Programmatic SEO pages.** The site has about 90 pages in total: 22 are data pages on "how much an Argentine spends per month on X," 14 are calculators, 7 are "Gasti vs. X" comparisons, and 6 are "best finance apps for freelancers, couples, students" pages. The footer has a button, "Ask ChatGPT / Claude: what is Gasti," aimed at getting AI search to recommend it too.

5. **Product Hunt.** Launched on 2026-01-14 with 46 votes, ranked #27 for the day. Not much effect.

I found no evidence of paid acquisition; the company itself says 100% of growth is organic.

### Who it's competing with: this format has been done to death for 2026 years

"AI expense tracking inside WhatsApp" is no longer new. Argentina alone has at least five players:

| Product | Launched | Scale | How Gasti differs |
|---|---|---|---|
| Gestor de gastos(Orange Dog) | 2020-10 | 17,620 ratings in Argentina; #14 in finance Top Grossing | Traditional manual expense-tracking app. No WhatsApp, no AI, but far larger user base |
| Chanchito | iOS 2023-07 | 8 ratings in the Mexico store | Same Latin American WhatsApp AI expense tracking, but leans toward financial advice, with a narrower ledger |
| Finy | 2026-03 | 12 ratings in the Argentina store | App-first voice/photo expense tracking. No WhatsApp entry point and no direct wallet connection |
| Hormi | 2026-04 | Not disclosed | Shared expense tracking for couples and roommates only, ARS 7,500/month per household. Its comparison post names Gasti directly |
| gasti.com.ar | Not verified | Not verified | Another Argentine AI expense tracker with the same name, which causes confusion in search |

Beyond Latin America, there are a dozen or so WhatsApp expense-tracking bots launched on Product Hunt over 2026 years (Spendr, Centimo, Billfy, Brazil's Controlei...). Most have single-digit votes. Further up are Mercado Pago, Ualá, and the spending analytics built into banking apps. They have tens of millions of users, but they only see money inside their own accounts.

Among this group, Gasti is the most complete. Most similar tools can only "record one entry"; it built a full ledger and connected to local wallets. Its moat comes from deep Argentina-specific localization, not from the WhatsApp format itself.

### If it were you

**Verdict:** Copying Gasti by building a Spanish-language WhatsApp expense bot isn't worth it. A dozen-plus of these have appeared in 2026 years, five in Argentina alone. Gasti has been running for nearly two years with just over ten thousand self-reported users, and almost nobody downloads the App. What's worth learning is the underlying approach: **pick a country with messy currencies and wallets, do input inside a chat app, and localize to a depth that outside products can't be bothered to match.**

**Who it suits:** Developers who live in that country, know its local payment rails and bank interfaces, and ideally, like Gasti's two founders, have connections in the local fintech or tech scene and can get media and insiders to share the product.

**Who it doesn't suit:** Anyone who doesn't live there and plans to build a generic multilingual WhatsApp expense bot, then rely on Product Hunt and store search for acquisition. That path is already crowded with dozens of similar products stuck in single-digit votes.

**How to do it:** Find markets with Argentina's problems: multiple currencies in use at once, local wallets and banks each controlling a piece, and foreign expense apps that don't understand the local situation. Turkey, Nigeria, Egypt, and Venezuela are worth checking first; whether they're actually empty is unverified. Keep the core feature order from Gasti: first make a single sentence enough to log an entry, then connect the transaction feeds of the one or two local wallets with the most users, then accept subscriptions in local currency. Build the App last, as just a dashboard.

**How to get users:** Copy its free acquisition mix: founders livestream demos on X or LinkedIn; pitch local tech media on the story of "AI helped a non-coder build a product"; trade memberships with other WhatsApp tools; and mass-produce data pages like "how much someone in country X spends each month on rent, delivery, and subscriptions."

**Is there a window:** No urgent window, but this chat-expense-tracking format spawns new copies every month. Once the country you pick has a first player that has localized deeply, the path closes.

**What would show I've misjudged this:** If Gasti's Android version launches and its iOS and Android ratings climb to several hundred within a month or two, or if it discloses solid revenue, that would suggest willingness to pay for "chat input + deep localization" is stronger than it looks now, and it would be time to look more seriously at the next country. Conversely, if its App ratings stay in single digits and its Top Grossing rank keeps sliding, that shows even the most complete player is only a small business.

## Gasti, your financial assistant (iOS 6759407445) research report

> In short: Gasti isn't a new app from August. It's a Argentine **WhatsApp expense-tracking bot that has been running for nearly two years** (MoneyLabs LLC, founders Nicola Romero Gerik and Nicolás Kenny), with a native iOS client added for existing users. Its ranks on the finance bestseller charts in Chile and Peru come from very low entry barriers there, where a few subscriptions are enough to chart. **The iOS side hasn't taken off** (4 global ratings). What did take off is the WhatsApp side: 2025-01 has 2,000 registered users, and 2026-08 claims 10k+. Growth came from the founders' network among Argentine fintech people on X, local tech media, co-marketing, and a large batch of programmatic SEO pages. The differentiator is "a WhatsApp expense entry point + a full ledger built for Argentina (pesos/dollars/crypto in parallel, direct links to wallets like Mercado Pago, credit card perks)." That explains retention and payments, but this category has been crowded with similar products for 2026 years.

### 1. How to read the data card (correcting first)

- **Ratings** : 4 globally, all in Argentina; 10-28 is 2, with 11-03 and 11-04 each adding 1 (appstore.app_day, 2026-11-06). The iTunes lookup shows an average of 5.0 and version 2.0.4 (2026-11-05 updates, adding "Your credit card perks (Argentina)" and group invite links). If rating growth roughly tracks downloads, iOS downloads are very small.

- **Bestseller chart rank is noise, not traction** :
    - Peru finance bestseller chart: 11-02 first charted at **#1** , then 5 → 14 → 30 → 36, sliding down each day; Peru ratings have stayed at 0.
    - Chile: 11-05 at #16,11-06, then #26; rating 0.
    - Argentina: 10-28 at #42 → 10-31 at #34 → 11-06 at #177, sliding the whole way.
    - Uruguay Top Free 11-01 at #188, 11-03 at #112.
    - (All from appstore.app_day.) This "charts high on appearance, then decays daily" pattern matches one or two subscriptions coming in on a given day. In-app purchases are Pro USD 8.49/month or 79.99/year, and Premium 12.99/month or 119.99/year (Argentina App Store page). A single annual subscription is enough to push into the top of finance charts in Peru and Chile.
    - For comparison, Finny: AI Money Manager in the same library has only 13 ratings, yet ranks #21 on the Singapore finance bestseller chart and #18 in Sweden (Sweden rating 0). That's how low the bar is on small-country finance bestseller charts.

- **The recall claims the countries it charts in grew from 1 to 3** : true, but what expanded is "countries where it earns some revenue," not user reach.

- **Web prices are cheaper than in-app** : on the official site, paid via Stripe, Pro is $6.99/month and Premium $9.99/month (gasti.pro/planes), about 20–30% more expensive in-app. That indicates the main payment flow runs through web/Stripe and Mercado Pago (peso payments supported from 2025-01, per iProUP). App Store revenue is only a small share, so low chart ranks understate, not overstate, its real revenue.

### 2. What it is and when it started

- Origin: Nicola Romero Gerik (Venezuelan, former product manager at Buenbit, now AI Lead at Balanz Capital, X account @nicoharone, 8,801 posts) first used AI tools to build a Telegram/WhatsApp expense bot almost "no-code," saying "90% was written by AI." Nicolás Kenny (@nicokennydev, UADE student, former tech lead at NUCBA) joined as technical co-founder (iProUP 2025-01-30 interview). The official site is signed "from Buenos Aires and Caracas," and the company is MoneyLabs LLC.

- Timeline:
    - 2024: the WhatsApp bot launched (by the time of the iProUP 2025-01 interview it had 2,000 registrations, about 40k logins last week, and 10–130k requests; the Mercado Pago integration, peso payments, and image and voice expense entry launched at the same time).
    - 2025-01-30: iProUP and A24 covered it the same day.
    - 2025: co-marketing with RecordAi (AI reminder assistant); RecordAi Premium users get Gasti free (RecordAi Instagram).
    - 2026-01-14: launched on Product Hunt, 46 points, #27 on the daily chart (producthunt library).
    - 2026-08-01: iOS app launch; 2026-08-14 LinkedIn announcement: "Over a year, tens of thousands (+10k) of people have used Gasti through WhatsApp… We're a small team, 100% organic growth".
    - 2026: shortlisted for Premios Tech.La 2026, "Best Product Strategy in Argentina and LatAm" (official homepage). Android version "coming soon."

- Product: log expenses via text, voice, or receipt photos in WhatsApp or the app; budget "cajitas," reminders for subscriptions and fixed expenses, goals, rule-based auto-categorization, shared accounts for two people, and conversion between pesos/dollars/crypto at official or "crypto dollar" rates; direct connections to Mercado Pago, Galicia, Wallbit, and Ripio (free tier syncs monthly, Pro weekly, Premium daily); "Instintos" monitoring agent, "Magic Money" voice transfers (requires confirmation); the iOS version supports offline logging and on-device Apple Intelligence categorization; the latest version adds "Credit card perks you can use today." The recall card says it connects to Claude/ChatGPT via MCP, but I didn't find any MCP mention on the official site (**unverified** ). The site footer has a "Ask ChatGPT/Claude what Gasti is" button, which is a GEO tactic, not MCP.

### 3. Competitors

| Competitors | Platform | Launched | Scale | How Gasti differs |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Gestor de gastos, ingresos(Orange Dog) | iOS | 2020-10 | Argentina: 17,620 ratings, 7 days +84, #14 on the Argentina finance bestseller chart (appstore library) | Traditional manual expense-tracking app, much larger in scale; no WhatsApp, no AI chat |
| Chanchito | WhatsApp + web (+ iOS) | iOS 2023-07 (Mexico store); PH 2026-01-13 | Mexico store 8 ratings; PH 2 points | Also "LatAm WhatsApp AI expense tracking," focused on conversational financial advice; narrower feature set than Gasti (Gasti wrote its own vs page) |
| Hormi | WhatsApp + web | PH 2026-04-21 | Not disclosed; PH 1 points | Only does shared expense tracking for couples/roommates, charging ARS 7,500/month per household; no native app; explicitly lists Gasti as a competitor |
| Finy - Finanzas con IA | iOS / Android | iOS 2026-03-24 | 12 ratings in the Argentina store | Voice/photo/text AI expense tracking, app-first, 14-day Pro trial; no WhatsApp entry point or direct wallet links |
| MonAi | iOS | Not verified | Not verified | Gasti's vs page says it lives in the Apple ecosystem (Apple Pay, Shortcuts, voice) |
| Same name, Gasti (gasti.com.ar) | Web/app | Not verified | Not verified | Another Argentine "personal + shared AI expense tracking" app with the same name, causing brand confusion |
| Fintonic / Mobills | iOS/Android | Before/after 2012 / 2014 | Leading players in Spain and Brazil | Mainly in euros and reais; they don't understand Argentina's multi-currency setup or local wallets |
| Splitwise / Tricount / Settle Up | iOS/Android | From 2011 / 2010 | Tricount Argentina 9,448 ratings (appstore library) | Only handles splitting bills, not personal finance |
| A large crop of overseas WhatsApp expense bots: Spendr, Centimo, Orrin, Billfy, Controlei (Brazil), POQT, FinAI, Gastobot, Masroufi, CashKaka, NekoExpense, and more | WhatsApp | 2024–2026 | Most on PH get 0–10 points (producthunt library) | Most are generic or from other countries; Gasti is one of the few that offers a full ledger with direct local wallet links |
| Build it yourself (n8n + OpenAI + Google Sheets) | Tutorials | From ¥2025 | Tutorials on TikTok/Instagram | Free but takes effort to set up |
| Big-company features | Spending analytics in Mercado Pago, Ualá, and bank apps | — | Tens of millions of users | Only shows transactions from your own accounts; doesn't span wallets and can't chat |

Bottom line: WhatsApp AI expense tracking has been a crowded category for 2026 years. Over the past 2026 years, a dozen-plus have launched on Product Hunt alone. Argentina alone has at least five: Gasti, Chanchito, Hormi, Finy, and the same-name gasti.com.ar.

### 4. Growth tactics (where users come from)

1. **The founders' network in Argentina's fintech/tech scene and on X** (confirmed): in the iProUP interview, Kenny said early users mostly came through tech and fintech influencers' recommendations; @nicoharone's pinned post is a livestream demo by the two founders, and his personal posts have hit 47k views (2026-09-01), with a post from 10-23 about "the money operating system I'm building" getting 4,613 views; @gasti_pro has posted 1,493 times. Romero has worked at Buenbit and Balanz, both leading Argentine crypto/brokerage firms.

2. **Local tech media** (confirmed): iProUP, A24 (both 2025-01-30), an SLA TV interview, YouTube podcasts; the official homepage displays a "Press coverage" wall.

3. **Partnerships and perks** (confirmed): RecordAi paying users get Gasti free; the "Pronto perks program" offers users discounts such as YAFU 15%, lannis 25%, and RecordAi 100%, pitching that "the money you save covers the subscription."

4. **Programmatic SEO + GEO** (confirmed): the sitemap has 90 URLs, including 22 pages on "how much an Argentine spends on X," 9 savings calculator pages, 5 calculator pages, 7 "Gasti vs X" pages, 6 pages on "best finance apps for freelancers/couples/families/monotributistas/students," and 22 blog posts; the footer has a deep link asking ChatGPT/Claude what Gasti is. Rival Hormi is also publishing similar comparison content, suggesting the two are competing for the same search terms.

5. **Instagram creators** (partly confirmed): the official account reposted a reel from finance creator @finanzasinfiltro_ ("Starting to track expenses via WhatsApp is a game changer"); whether it was paid is **unverified** .

6. **Product Hunt** (confirmed, small effect): 2026-01-14 launched with 46 points, #27 on the daily chart.

7. **Existing users migrating to iOS** (inferred): the iOS app is positioned as "a visual layer for existing WhatsApp users," as the LinkedIn announcement says; for now iOS has only 4 ratings.

8. **Paid acquisition:** no evidence found (LinkedIn claims "100% organic growth"); the ad libraries don't track it, so not finding ads doesn't mean there are none.

### 5. Why it (on the WhatsApp side) broke out

- **Right entry point:** nearly everyone in Latin America keeps WhatsApp open all the time. "Texting 'buying water 500 pesos' while queuing at the corner store" gets logged, solving the old problem of expense apps abandoned after two days (Kenny's words in iProUP).

- **Built for Argentina's chaotic currency:** pesos, official dollars, crypto dollars and USDT all coexist; earning in dollars and spending in pesos is normal. Gasti makes multi-currency and live exchange rates first-class features, which foreign products like Fintonic and Mobills don't do.

- **Connects to local wallet transactions:** Mercado Pago, Galicia, Wallbit and Ripio feed transactions directly, turning "manual logging" into "automatic entry + conversational correction." This is the core selling point of the paid tiers (sync frequency varies by tier).

- **Pay in pesos:** from 2025-01 it supports paying in pesos via Mercado Pago, sidestepping the problem of dollar cards. iProUP wrote it "may bring new users."

- **Founders bring their own distribution:** both are visible in Argentina's fintech and developer circles. Early users came through personal referrals and press, not paid spend.

- **The iOS app itself didn't break out:** 4 ratings, and its Top Grossing rank keeps sliding day by day. The recall only picked up noise from the low bar of small-country finance charts.

### 6. Differentiation, and whether that's why it took off

- The differentiation = **WhatsApp for input + a complete personal finance system built for Argentina for output** (multi-currency, direct local wallet links, budgets/subscriptions/goals/rules/joint accounts, credit card perks), while most WhatsApp bots just "log an entry."

- This explains why it has greater scale than its peers (10k+ users vs. single-digit PH scores for most peers) and why people will pay $7–10/month. But "WhatsApp expense logging" itself is no longer scarce: a dozen-plus players emerged in 2026 years, so the moat is depth of localization (wallet integration, exchange rates, perks), not the format.

- On iOS, the differentiation (offline + Apple Intelligence categorization) hasn't yet produced visible downloads.

### 7. Visibility and copycats

- **Visibility: buzzing in a small circle.** Argentine tech media covered it (2025-01), PH 46 points, shortlisted for Tech.La 2026; no public revenue (not on TrustMRR, founders haven't posted MRR), and no big English-language X accounts have written about it (nothing found in the x-radar corpus).

- **Copycats/peers:** Hormi (2026-04, Argentina, shared expense logging over WhatsApp, its comparison article names Gasti directly), Finy (2026-03, an Argentine developer), the same-named gasti.com.ar; beyond Latin America there are Spendr, Centimo, Billfy, Controlei (Brazil), and others. It's unclear who copied whom, but this format has been built by many.

### 8. What others can borrow

- Do input where people already are, in WhatsApp/Line/Telegram, and treat the native app as just a dashboard.

- Pick a country with a currency and wallet mess and go deep on localization (exchange rates, local wallet feeds, local payment methods) that big foreign products won't bother with.

- Let users subscribe in local currency with local payments (Mercado Pago). Web checkout one tier cheaper than in-app sidesteps Apple's commission.

- A low-cost distribution mix: founder demo livestreams on X + local tech media + cross-promoting memberships with other AI mini-tools + programmatic SEO (data pages like "how much does an Argentine spend on X each month") + a "Ask ChatGPT" footer for GEO.

- Don't trust small-country finance Top Grossing charts when evaluating an app: in countries like Peru, Chile or Uruguay, a single subscription can land you near the top.

### 9. Uncertain

- "10k+ users" is self-reported by the company; active and paying user counts are unknown, and revenue is not public.

- MCP integration with Claude/ChatGPT: the recall card says it exists, but it's not on the website. Unverified.

- Whether Instagram creator partnerships are paid and how large they are: unverified. Whether it runs Meta ads: the ad libraries don't track it, so it can't be checked.

- The Android version hasn't launched; how much search traffic the same-named gasti.com.ar will siphon off is unknown.

- Whether iOS can scale afterward depends on how fast the Android launch and WhatsApp migration of existing users go.
