# Meta's Pocket: a “playable TikTok” whose traffic was taken over from a shut-down small app

**What it is** A free app from Meta: a one-line prompt generates a touchable, remixable mini-game or toy, and it's served in a vertical scroll feed for people to browse.

**Why it took off** It's essentially the Gizmo app, absorbed by Meta and renamed. When Gizmo shut down, its users moved over in bulk. Then Brazil, the US and the EU were opened up in waves, and obscure categories in small countries could reach #1 with just a few dozen ratings, which looks like a sudden breakout.

**C** **How you could follow it** Don't go head-to-head with a general AI mini-game feed. Instead, bring the “playable post” format into vertical niches Meta won't take seriously: interactive brand try-out ads, classroom mini-experiments, desktop widgets, and charge clients for them.

C grade: it took off because of things followers can't get: Meta-subsidized model costs, Instagram traffic, and an entire shut-down legacy app's users. It has also been widely covered, is free, and has no revenue. The content format and the small-country chart tactics are worth learning, but no one has verified whether a vertical niche can actually earn money. Publicly known / widely discussed

Pocket lets you make a little gizmo from one sentence, something you can poke, tilt, and hear, then scroll through what others made, like TikTok. This week it hit #1 on the Top Free chart in Graphics & Design in Czechia, Slovakia, and Hungary, and it looks like a product that just came out of nowhere. It isn't. It's the same app Meta relaunched after hiring the team behind Gizmo, and the volume mostly comes from Gizmo's old users moving over, country-by-country rollouts, and tech press coverage. The format is worth studying. The path it took is not worth copying.

### The day a small app shut down

On Aug 21, 2026, Pocket launched across the US. The same day, Gizmo shut down. Gizmo CEO Josh Siegel wrote on X: "Shutting down Gizmo is bittersweet. It's been the work of many people over the past two years, but I'm excited about Pocket and what's next."

Gizmo was the only product of Atma Sciences, founded in 2024 by a former Snapchat engineer, and had raised about $5.48M. Before Meta hired the team, it had 635k total installs and a 98% positive rating (Appfigures data, cited by gHacks, 7-05). In March 2026, the whole team joined Meta's Superintelligence Labs. Meta didn't buy the company, it took a non-exclusive license to the technology. In June 29, Pocket soft-launched in Brazil, in August 21 it went to the US, and in October it opened to the EU.

The App Store reviews still show the move:

- "I used their old app, Gizmos, it's the same app, perfect. I love you GIZMO team!!!" (US, 11-03)

- "Since Gizmo shut down this is what I scroll at 2:30 am and can't stop" (US, 10-31)

- "Pocket is fun but I miss gizmo" (US, 10-27)

- "Why change it? Pocket is a dumb name and they wiped my playlists and Gizmo account" (US, 10-04,1 star)

- One user said they built a detailed ocean gizmo from scratch in the old app, and after the migration someone's Remix dropped the original creator's credit (US, 10-29,1 star)

### What it is

You open it to a vertical feed, and every item isn't a video but something playable: mini games, fidget toys, marbles that roll as you tilt your phone, camera filters, interactive memes with music. You can like, comment, save to a playlist, and if the creator allows it, Remix it into your own version in one tap.

Making one is simple too: write a sentence, AI generates it, and if you don't like it you open the editor and keep tweaking, adding photos from your camera roll. It's free, has no ads, and requires a Meta account to log in. It runs on Meta's own Muse Spark model, and users' creations and every click get used to train Meta's AI, which the help page states plainly.

How users describe it, in the reviews: "like TikTok, but no videos, all games" "Miniclip on steroids" "I play playable ads when I game, and here I can actually finish them" "better for your brain than TikTok." The most common word is addictive.

### How big it is now

| Metric | Metric | Sources |
|---|---|---|
| Global App Store ratings | 10-28 to 3,711 in 11-06 days, +5,005,7 for 1,107 | App Store, 33 countries combined |
| New ratings in a single day | 10-29 at 39 to 11-04 at 238, 11-06 at 199 | App Store |
| Countries charted | 21 → 33 | App Store, 10-28 to 11-06 |
| US | 2,724 ratings, +7 in 399 days; ranked #15–43 on the Graphics & Design Top Free chart, not on the overall chart | App Store,11-06 |
| New ratings in other countries over 7 days | Brazil 138, France 87, UK 74, Spain 49, Italy 45 | App Store,11-06 |
| Google Play | About 124k installs, +7k in 21.5 days, 3,071 ratings, #12 on Brazil's Arts & Design Top Free chart | Google Play,11-06 |

Take those #1 rankings with a grain of salt. When it hit #1 in Czechia, it had only 18 ratings there in total; Slovakia had 16, Hungary 14. In Czechia it was still at #185 in October 31, and got its first rating in November 2, then reached #1 in November 3. Graphics & Design is a very quiet category in these small countries, so a few dozen downloads can take the top spot. The 8 newly charted countries (Romania, Slovakia, Lithuania, Slovenia, Belgium, Hungary, Cyprus, Malta) all appeared between 10-29 and 11-02, which lines up with the EU opening in October (inference).

Within Meta's own lineup it's small: Muse, another app Meta launched in September, has 460k ratings in the US and 9M installs on Google Play, adding 1.61M a week. Pocket is mid-to-small among Meta's experimental apps.

### Where users come from

- **Gizmo's old users moved over** : the reviews above are the evidence. When Gizmo shut down, players and creators had nowhere else to go.

- **Rolled out country by country** : Brazil → US → EU. Each wave pushed it to #1 in small-country categories, and the "countries charted" count rose with each one.

- **Tech press wrote about it** : TechCrunch (7-02), Engadget (8-20), TNW (8-21), gHacks and others ran two waves in July and August. On TikTok, tech accounts recapped it, for example a 84k-follower account, kirkyuhnke, posted one in August 21.

- **Instagram and Facebook promotion** : Meta's help page says that if your profile is public, a gizmo you make in Pocket may be recommended to people on Instagram and Facebook. You can turn that off in settings. So it can borrow traffic from Meta's large audience, though how much is invisible.

- **Paying creators to post** : a September comment claimed to be a member of the "Pocket partner program" and said the one-tap share to Instagram and Facebook was broken, so they couldn't meet the posting quota in their contract (US, 9-06). That suggests the company pays people to make content and push it outward. I couldn't find the scale.

- **Official TikTok account** : @pocket has 4,223 followers, posted almost daily since late August, 250–2,000 views per post (11-06 views in total). Not a lot. One comment said "saw it on TT" (Canada, 10-18).

- **Kids telling each other (inference)** : "I got my friends on it too" "I got all my friends with ADHD on it." One parent said they put it on their kid's phone after Gizmo shut down and suggested 10+. Many of the themes are FNAF and driving sims. Daily ratings doubled after October 30, possibly tied to Halloween and word of mouth, unverified.

- **Ad buying** : I didn't find any ads pointing to it in the Meta Ad Library or the European TikTok Ad Library.

### Where the money comes from

No. It's free, has no ads, and no in-app purchases. Generating a playable game takes a large model, and Meta pays for that. In return it gets creation and engagement data to train the model. This is exactly what a small team can't copy: Gizmo itself raised $5.48M, and it only survived by being absorbed by a big company.

### Who it's competing with

| Product | Scale | Compared with Pocket |
|---|---|---|
| Gizmo(Atma Sciences) | 635k total installs, 8-21 shut down | The direct predecessor, same team, same format |
| Wabi (Eugenia Kuyda, Replika co-founder) | $20M seed round, later reports of another $55M raise at a $1.25B valuation; about 29k installs on Google Play (11-06) | Early on it called itself "the YouTube of small apps," then shifted to having AI build practical little tools inside group chats. Some write-ups tie this to users not wanting to build things themselves. |
| Vibecode | $9.4M raised | Generates real apps, aimed at people who build products, no scroll-to-play feed |
| Rosebud AI | Only 11 ratings on iOS | AI game-making on the web, a creator tool, no vertical feed on mobile |
| Gemini Canvas, Claude Artifacts, ChatGPT Canvas | Huge user bases | All can generate small games, but none has a feed, Remix, or sharing beyond links |

The format of an AI mini-thing feed you can scroll, play, and Remix has only really gotten traction as an indie app in Gizmo, and Meta has absorbed it. Wabi took a similar path and then pivoted.

### What's worth learning

**The content unit** : a playable post is cheap to make, one person can make one from a sentence, viewers stay longer, and Remix turns one piece into dozens. The complaints in the reviews are clues too: "every other one is something you've played, changed a bit and called your own." Remix is so easy that originals get drowned out, so credit and recommendation have to be designed in from day one.

**What users want that it doesn't have yet** : DMs and group chats ("please add DMs", Gizmo had group chats), multiplayer, putting gizmos on the iPhone home screen as widgets, better moderation (people used it to funnel adult content), and error handling when editing large projects.

**How it got volume** : test quietly in one country, roll out region by region, and push to #1 in a small country's niche category with each wave. Anyone can do this. The bar for a small country's category is a few dozen ratings.

### If it were you

**One-line take** : don't go head-to-head on an "AI mini-game feed." Meta gives it away free, covers model costs, and can borrow Instagram traffic, and you get none of that. What you can take is the content format of playable posts, and put it in a vertical niche Meta won't take seriously.

**Good fit** : 1–2 people who can build front-end and understand game feel; anyone who already has a vertical audience or client pipeline, like teachers, small shop owners, or ad agencies.

**Bad fit** : anyone trying to build the next general content platform that wins on feed and community scale; anyone without the money to subsidize generation costs long-term; anyone unwilling to handle content moderation and underage users.

**How to do it:**

- Playable interactive ads for brands and small shops: generate a game you can finish from one sentence, export it as an Instagram or TikTok landing page or an embeddable link, and charge per piece or per month. The comment "playable ads, finally I can finish them" is the demand.

- Education: a teacher types one sentence and gets a physics or chemistry mini-experiment or a vocab game, sent to the class. Students Remix it to hand in their work. Sold as a subscription to teachers or schools.

- Desktop widgets and phone fidget toys. Users are asking for widgets, a corner Pocket won't prioritize.

- Whichever one you pick, work out generation cost first: start with templates plus a few parameters, not having the model write code from scratch each time.

**How to get users** : a vertical needs its own channels, not feeds. For ads, go after small Shopify sellers and ad agencies, and send them a few samples they can play with. For education, post screen recordings titled "make a classroom game in one sentence" in teacher groups and on TikTok teacher accounts. After launch, copy Pocket's playbook: pick a niche category in a small country, chart there, and use the ranking screenshot as marketing material.

**Timing: now or never** : Meta, Google and OpenAI are all adding "generate something that runs" features. The window for the generic version has closed. A vertical has to land its first paying customers within six months to prove it isn't just a Pocket template.

**What would mean you read it wrong** :

- Pocket quickly adds one-tap export to Instagram ads, or opens interactive ads to brands: your vertical just got absorbed;

- Meta shuts Pocket down, or ratings growth falls back to a few dozen a day by year-end: the format can't keep people without big-company subsidies and migrated users, so rethink the vertical too;

- A month after you ship samples, not one merchant or teacher will pay the first dollar: they find it fun but not worth paying for. Don't force it.

## Pocket: Make Gizmos (Meta): why it took off

> App Store id 6761221765 · developer Meta Platforms, Inc. · Graphics & Design · Free · researched 2026-11-06

### Bottom line

This isn't a small team's product that broke out. It's the same app Meta relaunched after acqui-hiring the Gizmo team (Atma Sciences): 2026-06 Brazil test → 2026-08-21 full US launch (same day Gizmo shut down, existing users migrated) → 2026-10 EU opened. The "top spot" in the recall data mostly came in small markets like the Czech Republic, Slovakia and Hungary, where the Graphics & Design category bar is very low (in the Czech Republic it reached #1 with only 18 ratings in total). In the US it sat at #15–20 in its category and never reached the overall chart. Real growth has been moderate. It comes from Meta's resources (the team, the Muse Spark model, the Meta account system, organic tech press) and a product format that is genuinely new (a feed of "playable posts"), not from paid acquisition or creator tactics.

### 1. What it is

In one sentence you generate a "gizmo": a touchable, tilt- or shake-responsive mini game, toy or interactive meme with sound and camera, published to a TikTok-style vertical feed where others can like, comment, save to playlists and Remix it. Free, no ads, sign-in through a Meta account. Interaction data is used to train Meta's AI (sources: [meta.com help page](https://www.meta.com/help/pocket/4433460963602094/), [TechTimes 2026-07-08](https://www.techtimes.com/articles/319915/20260708/meta-pocket-app-turns-descriptions-games-every-play-ai-training-data.htm)).

The underlying model is Meta's Muse Spark. Meta shipped it in its own apps first, and the external API kept getting delayed (daily.dev).

### 3. Growth data (our library)

- Total App Store ratings across all countries: 2026-10-28 3,711 → 2026-11-06 5,005; 7 new in 1,107 days; daily new ratings rose from 39 (10-29) to 238 (11-04) and then 199 (11-06); countries on the charts 21 → 33 (appstore library, data card).

- US: ratings 2,238 → 2,724 (9 days, +486, about 54 a day). Graphics & Design free chart bounced between #15 and #43, never reaching the overall free chart (appstore.app_day, 2026-10-28–11-06).

- Rating gain by country over 7 days: US 399, Brazil 138, France 87, UK 74, Spain 49, Italy 45 (appstore.app_profile, 2026-11-06).

- How much the "top spot" means: when the Czech Republic hit #1 the app had 18 ratings in total, Slovakia 16, Hungary 14. The Czech Republic reached #185,11-02 with only 10-31 ratings and got to #1 by 11-03 with 1 ratings. These markets have an extremely low bar in Graphics & Design, so a handful of downloads can take the top spot. Newly charting countries (Romania, Slovakia, Lithuania, Slovenia, Belgium, Hungary, Cyprus, Malta) appeared gradually between 10-29 and 11-02, which lines up with the October EU opening (inference).

- Google Play: com.facebook.gizmo has about 124k installs, +21.5k in 7 days, 3,071 ratings, and ranked #12 in Brazil's Art & Design free chart (googleplay library, 2026-11-06).

- Compared with its sibling: Meta's Muse (launched in September) has 460k US ratings, +69k in 7 days, and 9M GP installs, +1.61M in 7 days. Within Meta's experimental apps, Pocket is small to mid-sized, in the same tier as Forum, Seller and Creator Studio.

### 4. Competitors

| Product | Platform | Launched | Scale | How it differs from Pocket |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Gizmo(Atma Sciences) | iOS/Android | 2024–25 | 635k total installs, 2026-08-21 shut down | This is Pocket's predecessor, the same team and format. Pocket is effectively a sequel with the Meta brand, Meta's model and Meta's accounts added. |
| Wabi (Eugenia Kuyda, Replika co-founder) | iOS/Android/Mac | 2025-10 beta; 2.0 public on 2026-10-19 | a16z led a $20M pre-seed; later reports say IVP $55M at a $1.25B valuation. GP has about 29k installs, 7 days +13k (Google Play library 11-06). | Early on it was also called "YouTube for apps". It later became an AI assistant for groups that generates practical mini apps in group chats. [Some articles say users didn't want to build things themselves](https://www.foundra.ai/key-reads/wabi-pivot-kuyda-users-did-not-want-to-build-apps-founder-lesson-first-time-founders). Pocket sticks to entertainment, "scroll and play". |
| Vibecode | iOS | 2025 | Raised $9.4M (led by Alexis Ohanian) | Generates real apps for people who make things, not a content feed |
| Rosebud AI | Web / iOS | 2024 | Only 11 iOS ratings (appstore library) | Web-based AI game creation, aimed at creators. No phone swipe-feed consumption. |
| Vibe coding tools like Replit and LastApp | iOS | 2022/2025 | Replit has 22k US ratings | Developer tool; the output is an app, not feed content |
| Big-tech features: Gemini Canvas, Claude Artifacts, ChatGPT Canvas | In-web / in-app | 2024– | Huge scale | Can generate mini games, but has no social feed or Remix; sharing is by link only |

Verdict: The same "scrollable, playable, remixable AI mini-app feed" format. Among standalone apps, only Gizmo really took off, and it has already been absorbed by Meta. Wabi tried a similar direction and then pivoted.

### 5. Growth tactics (evidence)

- **Gizmo users migrating (confirmed)** : Gizmo shut down the day Pocket launched in the US. Reviews include "I used its prior app, Gizmos… the same app", "Ever since gizmo shutdown this has been my game to doomscroll", "Pocket is fun but I miss gizmo", "since gizmo got deleted… i installed this app". Some original creators also complained their credit was stripped during the migration (appstore.review, 2026-10-23~11-03).

- **Gradual regional rollout (confirmed)** : Brazil → US → EU. Each new batch of markets pushed it to #1 in the category charts of small countries. Most of the "charted in countries 21→33" recalls came from this step.

- **Tech media picked it up organically (confirmed)** : TechCrunch, Engadget, TNW, gHacks, TechRepublic and others covered it in two waves, July and August. Tech accounts on TikTok reposted it (e.g. kirkyuhnke 84K followers 2026-08-21, blinxnow 5.4M followers, Arabic-language, around 14K views 2026-07-07) (TikHub search, 2026-11-06).

- **Official TikTok account (confirmed, but small)** : @pocket has 4,223 followers. Since late August it has posted almost daily, with single posts getting roughly 250–2,000 views (TikHub, 2026-11-06). One comment reads "seen this on TT" (Canada, 2026-10-18).

- **Word of mouth / teen self-spread (inferred)** : The most frequent words in reviews are "addictive", "better than TikTok", "I even put my friend on this", alongside teen-oriented themes like FNAF and driving sims. Daily ratings commonly doubled after 10-30; this may be tied to Halloween or word of mouth, but it is unverified.

- **Paid acquisition (not found)** : The metaads tracking library has no ads landing on Pocket (iOS 6761221765 / com.facebook.gizmo), and no copy mentions gizmo. The TikTok EU ad library shows nothing either. We only track ads from advertisers on our list, so not finding them doesn't mean they don't exist.

- **In-app promotion on Meta (unverified)** : We found no evidence of promotion inside Instagram or Facebook. Some reports say Meta has no plans yet to bring Pocket into Instagram. Login is tightly bound to a Meta account (several negative reviews complain they can't log in).

### 6. Why it took off

1. **New format** : Turns vibe coding from "building an app" into "scrollable posts". Each one can be touched and remixed. Users treat it as "a TikTok that doesn't rot your brain" (several reviews say so).

2. **Inherited a validated product and community** : Gizmo had 635k installs and a 98% positive rating. The team and content format were moved over wholesale, and older users were forced to migrate after Gizmo shut down.

3. **Big-company resources** : Free, no ads, and generation costs are covered by Meta's in-house models (user interactions feed back into AI training). A small team would struggle to subsidize this long-term.

4. **Country-by-country scaling** : Opening up EU markets let it reach #1 in category charts of very small countries, which amplified the impression that it "broke out".

### 7. Differentiation and whether it's the cause

Differentiation: a social feed + every piece of content is interactive (touch, gyroscope, camera, music) + one-sentence generation + Remix. Compared with Canvas/Artifacts it adds distribution and social; compared with Wabi/Vibecode it is entertainment rather than a tool. This format is why Gizmo took off initially and why Pocket keeps users (reviews are full of "addictive"). But Pocket's current volume comes more from Meta's resources and the Gizmo migration than from the format being re-validated out in the open.

### 8. Visibility

Already widely covered (TechCrunch, Engadget, TNW and several others), and it is a Meta product, so there is no "nobody knows about it" window. It's free, so there are no revenue figures to disclose.

### 9. Takeaways

- The "playable post" as a content unit: low generation cost, good retention, and naturally suited to Remix-driven virality. Better to build it as a vertical (educational mini experiments, interactive brand ads, kids' learning) than to go head-on against Meta with a feed.

- Quietly test in a single country first (Brazil), then scale region by region, reaching #1 in small-market category charts to create a signal.

- Acquire or absorb a small app that already has a community, then shut the old app down to force migration.

- The small-team opportunity is more likely where Pocket isn't going: enterprise/brand interactive ads (a reviewer says it's "like a playable ad you can finish"), education, desktop widgets (users are asking for widgets), and multiplayer with direct messages (users are asking for that too).

### 10. Uncertain

- The direct cause of the doubling of ratings within 7 days (Halloween content, school word of mouth, Meta in-app recommendation) is unverified.

- The iOS launch date on the data card reads 2026-08-17; whether it's the same id as the June Brazil test is unverified.

- Whether Meta is buying ads for it on its own ad platforms; our ad library does not cover this.

- Whether it will last long-term: Meta experimental apps are often shut down, and the Gizmo team's positioning is unclear.
