Play PS2 directly on iPhone: ZETA Emulator climbs charts in 50 countries with a "no JIT" trick

What it is An all-in-one game emulator for iPhone, downloadable from the store, that plays PS2, Wii, Wii U, 3DS, PSP and other classic console games. Free, with Pro as an in-app purchase.

Why it took off Apple allows emulators but not JIT, and PS2 and similar 3D consoles previously couldn't run in the store version. It got PS2 running well enough to play, and the "God of War on iPhone" footage was picked up by players in many countries who made their own tutorial videos. Titles packed with console names caught search traffic.

CHow you could follow Don't try to build an all-in-one. Do what it hasn't done well: an iPad version, a one-time-purchase app that only does PS2 but nails compatibility, achievements and cloud saves. For acquisition, copy its approach: multilingual titles and tutorials from small-language game creators.

C grade: the growth is real, but following it requires running 3D consoles smoothly without JIT, which is a very high technical bar. Gamuroid has already added PS2, and GameX, RTM-EMU and Fin are competing too. Add trademark and delisting risk, and it isn't worth it for most teams.

An emulator with no public team, registered only as a US LLC, is doing in the App Store what used to require jailbreaking or sideloading: tap to download, open it, and run God of War 2 or GTA San Andreas. Since late September, when PS2 was added, its daily new ratings have multiplied several times. Users are mostly in Latin America and Southeast Asia, driven by Spanish, Thai and Indonesian short videos. It's real, but the bar is high and others are already chasing it.

A Spanish tutorial with 240k views

In 2026 Oct 12, an account called cristhianmolinero1 on TikTok posted a video titled "Cómo jugar PlayStation 2 en tu iPhone" (How to play PS2 on your iPhone), tagged #grandtheftautosanandreas, which reached 245k views by Nov 6. The caption doesn't name the app, but the same account posted another video in Nov 1 of ZETA playing Wii, very likely the same app (inference).

Around the same time, accounts in Thailand, Indonesia, Iraq and Germany were posting the same kind of footage: an iPhone turned sideways, with PS2 racing or God of War on screen. Germany's sleex98 posted "Playing Cars on iPhone 17 Pro Max with ZETA", with 90k views. An Iraqi video reached 100k, a Thai one 98k. A long US-store review put it most directly: "This is the first official PS2 emulator on the App Store that doesn't need sideloading."

What it is

iPhone only (iOS 16+), install size 810 MB. Core emulation is free with no ads. Pro is $1.99 a month, or one-time $12.99 / $14.99 / $17.99 (US store page, 11-06). In the China store, monthly is ¥15 and one-time starts at ¥48.

The developer account is "retro emu", seller Appx LLC, which has only this one App. The earliest version in the store record is from May 2026, and it officially launched in Jul 19. It has a full Simplified Chinese official site, a natural-sounding China store name, and in August it was first given away free in the Chinese-speaking community. The team is most likely Chinese (inferred).

Why now

In April 2024 Apple allowed emulators on the App Store, but JIT (the technique that makes emulators fast) is not allowed. Without JIT, older 2-bit consoles like NES and GBA are fine, but 3-bit consoles like PS2 and Wii were long thought to be too heavy to run. To play PS2 on iPhone, you either sideload and find a way to enable JIT, or stream from a PC. In March 2026 an iOS 26.4 update broke one of the methods for enabling JIT.

ZETA added PS2, GameCube and Wii in its Sep 20 3.0.2 version, and Wii U in its Oct 26 3.1.0 version, all marketed as "no JIT needed." From Sep 20 to Oct 26 it shipped 6 versions, and reviews kept repeating "cada actualización mejora" (every update makes it better).

To be clear, it is not the first app in the store to claim PS2 support. RTM-EMU (charted January 2026), GameX Emulator - PS2 (April) and others already advertised PS2, and Fin (April) already had Wii U / Wii / GameCube. But in the US store they only had a few hundred to five hundred ratings, with scores between 3.4 and 4.1 (App Store, 11-06). ZETA had 1,647 ratings in the US store, at 4.84 stars. In users' eyes, "first" means the first one that runs well and covers enough.

Where users come from

The growth is real. Daily new ratings across all stores were 29 42 in Oct, and from Nov 4 to 6 they ran 190 to 206 per day. In the last 7 days it added 920, the most of any emulator on iOS, more than Gamuroid (683) and Manic EMU (505) (App Store data by region, 11-06).

On Nov 3, Mexico #27, Chile #28, Nicaragua #31, Venezuela #33, Costa Rica #37, Ecuador #38 and Colombia #41 all surged together across Latin America, right after a Wii U update and a batch of Wii U videos.

There are four sources:

  • Short videos, no ad spend. About 35 TikTok videos mention zeta, with roughly 1.3M views combined (mixed with unrelated content of the same name). On YouTube, 26 videos with Zeta in the title have about 89k views combined, 24 of them posted in October, and the top one is ESMANDAU's Spanish-language channel from Oct 21 at 24k. "Gods of War on an iPhone" is instantly understandable from the footage alone, which makes it ideal for short video.
  • Store search. The names stack console names: the US name is "ZETA Emulator: PS2 3DS Wii PSP", Latin America's is "ZETA: Emulador PS2 3DS Wii PSP", and the China store's is "ZETA 游戏模拟器 3DS PS2 PSP GBA NDS". Japan, Korea, Russia and Portugal each have a version, and the app supports 33 languages. The website zemu.app has multilingual landing pages like "PS2 Emulator for iPhone".
  • Starting with free giveaways in Chinese-speaking communities. In August 30 and 31, it ran a "lifetime Pro free" giveaway, with claim tutorials posted on Mergeek, X and Taiwanese YouTube, which built its first batch of positive reviews. Mexico also has reviews saying "Fue gratis el pro" (the Pro was free).
  • Ads: none found. Searches of the Meta, Google and TikTok (Europe) ad libraries turned up no ZETA ads. Not finding them doesn't mean none ran, but the evidence so far points to mostly organic traffic.

The reviews look like they're from real players: they cite specific devices and games ("iPhone 14 Pro runs light PS2 games fine, demanding ones overheat and drop frames", "Wii U's Mario Kart 8 is smooth, crashed on the third race", "Scarface and God of War 2 run"). There are plenty of requests (full-screen iPad, achievements, PS3/Vita, iCloud sync) and complaints (lag, heat, taking 23 GB). I see no sign of coordinated five-star reviews.

Where the money comes from

Only the Pro in-app purchase. It has only appeared on the Top Grossing chart in small countries' Entertainment category: Russia #37–70, Nicaragua #22, Macau #39, Ecuador #48, Vietnam #64, and it has never made the overall Top Grossing chart. Estimated at a few thousand to ten-some thousand dollars a month (inferred, low confidence). Its pricing is friendly to Latin America and Southeast Asia: a one-time $12.99 purchase that players are willing to pay: "pagué la versión PRO", "bought Premium to support the developer" (Mexican reviews).

Sideloading (Play!, AetherSX2-style, Dolphin)—Millions of installs on AndroidOn iOS you have to sideload and enable JIT, which is getting harder

ZETA's real difference is just one thing: it makes PS2 / Wii / Wii U playable in a store app. Screen mirroring, skins and cheat codes, Manic and the others all have. And this edge is being chased: Gamuroid has already added PS2, and Manic will likely follow (inferred).

Risks

  • Takedown. The name uses trademarks like PS2, Wii and 3DS directly, so Nintendo and Sony could file complaints. Apple might also take a closer look at how it runs without JIT.
  • Open-source licenses. Cores like Dolphin, PCSX2 and Azahar are all GPL. ZETA is closed source, and which cores it uses is not disclosed. If it uses them without open-sourcing, it risks community reports (unverified).
  • Performance. Many complaints about PS2 / Wii U frame drops and heat, and it depends heavily on newer devices.

If it were you

Verdict: This is a win where the technology came first and the channel followed. The opportunity is real, but if you follow it, the first hurdle is running 3-bit consoles smoothly without JIT. That isn't something you can do by reskinning, and three or four players are already crowding the space.

Who it suits: Teams already building emulator cores, or who can read PCSX2 / Dolphin code; developers who already have an emulator on the store and want to add a 3-bit platform.

Who it doesn't suit: People hoping to reskin an all-in-one emulator and grow by stacking keywords. Manic, Gamuroid and JOY already fill that spot. Also anyone wary of copyright and takedown risk.

How to do it: Don't compete head-on on "all-in-one." Pick the parts it hasn't done well:

  1. iPad. ZETA only supports iPhone, and full-screen iPad is the most common request in reviews. PS2 is demanding, and M-chip iPads run it more steadily, with a big screen that feels more like a console.
  2. Do one platform best. For example, only PS2, but thoroughly cover compatibility lists, per-game presets and heat control, and sell a one-time purchase like Folium does for 3DS.
  3. Supporting features. Achievement systems, iCloud save sync, controller mapping, per-game shared settings. Players name these in reviews, and ZETA hasn't delivered them yet.

How to acquire users: Following its path is enough. Write "PS2 on iPhone / Emulador PS2" clearly in the name and website, localized by language. Create visuals of "God of War, GTA, Dragon Ball on iPhone" and recruit game-focused creators in Spanish, Portuguese, Thai and Indonesian to make tutorials. For a cold start, send a batch of lifetime licenses through the Chinese free-giveaway circles in exchange for ratings.

How early you need to be: The sooner the better. Gamuroid has already followed on PS2, and ZETA updates every two weeks. By early 2027, "can play PS2 in the store" will likely become a baseline everyone has (inferred).

What would show you read it wrong: ZETA or similar apps get taken down by Apple, or Nintendo / Sony succeed with complaints. Or Manic and Gamuroid make PS2 work just as well, and ZETA's daily new ratings drop back below 100. That would mean the gap has closed, and what's left is a price-competing all-in-one emulator market.

ZETA Emulator: why PS2 3DS Wii PSP could run on iPhone

App Store id 6762959682 · developer "retro emu" · seller Appx LLC · bundle app.zemu.zeta · site zemu.app · Entertainment category · free + in-app purchases. Storefronts checked: the full appstore library of 115 storefronts was scanned first (this app charted in 47–53 of them), then detail for us, cn, th, my, tw, hk, mx, br, id, vn, ru. Data dates 2026-10-28 to 2026-11-06.

Bottom line

It's the first fully featured emulator on the App Store that runs PS2 (and later Wii/GameCube/Wii U) without JIT or sideloading. After 2026-09-20's 3.0.2 version added PS2, organic YouTube and TikTok reviews and tutorials in Spanish, Thai, Indonesian and Arabic appeared ("PS2 on iPhone, No JIT, No jailbreak"), and users came in through those videos and store search. The growth is real but mid-sized: across all storefronts about 200 new ratings a day, and it only reaches the Top Grossing chart in small countries' Entertainment category. Verdict: it actually worked (mid-sized, genuine). Tags: timing or platform event / product / distribution play (ASO + organic content).

1. What it is

  • An all-in-one emulator: 3DS, Wii U, DS, Wii, GameCube, GBA/GBC/GB, NES/SNES, N64, PS2, PSP, PS1, Dreamcast, Saturn, Genesis/32X/Sega CD, arcade, J2ME mobile games (from appstore.app_text description, 2026-11-06; site zemu.app).
  • Features: instant save states, 5x speed, built-in cheat codes, custom skins/controller layouts, one-tap combos, AirPlay mode where the phone acts as a controller ("living room console mode"), multiple controllers, online multiplayer and trading, texture packs, mod import. iPhone only, iOS 16+, install size 810 MB, 33 languages supported (appstore.app_snapshot / app table, 2026-11-06).
  • The store name is localized per storefront, with keyword-heavy titles (appstore.app_name): the us listing is "ZETA Emulator: PS2 3DS Wii PSP", the 16 Latin American storefronts use "ZETA: Emulador PS2 3DS Wii PSP", cn is "ZETA 游戏模拟器 3DS PS2 PSP GBA NDS", HK/Macau/TW is "ZETA - 遊戲模擬器3DS PS2 PSP GBA DS", and Japan, Korea, Russia and Brazil/Portugal each have local-language versions.
  • Pricing: core emulation is free; Zeta Pro has a monthly subscription at $1.99 and one-time purchases at $12.99 / $14.99 / $17.99 (US App Store page, 2026-11-06 scrape). The cn storefront lists the monthly at ¥15 and one-time at ¥48 / ¥58 / ¥68 (Mergeek listing). The privacy label says "no data collected", and the app has no ads.

2. Is it a reskinned old product with a new launch date?

  • Apple's release_date is 2026-07-19, but the US page's version history starts at 1.0.1,2026-05-13, followed by 1.0.2 (05-25), 1.0.3 (06-23), 2.0.1 (07-08), 2.0.2 (07-19)… (US App Store page). Inferred: the 5–July period was probably a limited-storefront release or test, and 7-19 was the real official launch. Either way, it's a new product from 2026.
  • The same developer id (1895097908) has only this one app in the library. Searching by the bundle prefix zemu and seller Appx LLC turned up no predecessor app under another name or bundle (appstore.app / developer tables).
  • The Google Play library has no Android version of ZETA and no same-name or same-developer product (googleplay.app_profile). So it isn't an Android emulator brand being ported over. It's closed source, and the upstream cores it uses are not public (unverified).
  • Clues: it has a simplified Chinese official site page, a complete cn store name, and ranks #1532 in the cn store ratings. 2026-08-30/31 ran a "free in-app purchase" promo in the Chinese-speaking market (X @RocM301 2026-08-31 post; indexed by Mergeek, when it had 804 ratings at 5.0 stars; a Taiwan YouTube channel posted "Zeta APP Lifetime Edition: How to Get It Free" on 2026-08-30). Inference: the team is most likely Chinese-speaking, with the seller registered under a US LLC.

3. Is the growth real or manufactured?

Why 3.1's total ratings across all storefronts dipped (11-05 8820 → 11-06 8366)

Ratings weren't deleted; it's a measurement issue. appstore.app_day only records the rating count for storefronts charting that day. On 11-06, the storefronts vn (453), kr (121), es (89), sg (31), om, jm, hu and mu dropped off the category charts, together losing about 708; ph (40), kw (12), cz (6) and az (4) newly charted and added back about 62; adding about 190 of real new ratings that day gives exactly 8366. Likewise, the jump on 11-03 (5190→6757) happened because us (1407) entered the library for the first time; the jump on 11-05 came from cn (1513) and kr entering the library. To see real growth, use the daily new ratings (sum of rating_delta): 10-29 was 42,10-30, 114, and afterwards it sat between 81 and 130; from 11-04 to 11-06 it was 206, 188, 198 (data card, from appstore.app_day).

  • On 11-03, several Latin American storefronts spiked at once: mx #27, cl #28, ni #31, ve #33, cr #37, ec #38, co #41. The timing lines up with the 10-26 3.1.0 (Wii U) update and a batch of Wii U videos from 10-29/30 (see section 5).

3.3: are the reviews genuine?

  • The library holds 88 reviews: mx 82, averaging 4.70 stars with 3 one-star reviews; ru 6, all 5 stars (appstore.review, 2026-08-28 to 10-31). Reviews are only collected in 22 main storefronts, so the sample leans toward mx.
  • The reviews read like real players: specific devices and games ("iPhone 14 Pro runs PS2 light games fine, heavier ones heat up and drop frames", "MK8 on Wii U is smooth, crashes in the third match", "DBZ Budokai Tenkaichi 3 at 2x resolution has ghosting, needs TC Offset", "Scarface and God of War 2 run"). Lots of feature requests (full-screen iPad, RetroAchievements, PS3/Vita, memory cards, iCloud sync), and some complaints (stutter, overheating, 23 GB of storage). Timing is spread out evenly, with no sign of a cluster of five-star reviews on one day.
  • The long reviews on the US page have the same tone. One iPhone 17 Pro Max user reported NFS Most Wanted dropping frames and overheating, and an Iraqi user wrote a long list of UI suggestions, explicitly calling it "the first official PS2 emulator on the App Store that doesn't need sideloading".
  • Average score by store: us 4.83, cn 4.89, th 4.91 (app_snapshot, 2026-11-06). The scores run high, but that's typical for the emulator category, and part of the 5-star reviews come from users who got Pro for free in August ("Fue gratis el pro", mx 2026-08-29).
  • Conclusion: no sign of rating manipulation; the country spread of ratings matches the language spread of the organic YouTube/TikTok videos (Spanish, Thai, Indonesian, Arabic, Portuguese).

Streaming (Steam Link / Moonlight)iOS——You need a computer, and Android Authority 2025-05 even calls it the "best way" to play PS2 on iOS

ZETA gained 7 ratings in the last 920 days, ranking #1 among all iOS emulators, ahead of Gamuroid's 683 and Manic EMU's 505. But its cumulative ratings (8366, all stores combined) are only a sixth of Delta's and just over a quarter of Manic's (appstore.app_profile, 2026-11-06).

5. Growth tactics (evidence)

  1. Platform event + technical gap: Apple 2024-04 revised its App Review guidelines 4.7, allowing emulators on the App Store but banning JIT (AppleInsider, 9to5Mac 2024-04). PS2/Wii/3DS-style 3D platforms were long considered unplayable without JIT, so they had to be sideloaded (Android Authority 2025-05; Play! depends on JIT). iOS 26.4 also made sideloading with JIT harder. ZETA added PS2/GC/Wii in version 3.0.2 (2026-09-20), and Wii U in version 3.1.0 (10-26), both claiming to work without JIT. This is a real gap in the store. 【Confirmed: version history; reviews include "Buen emulador sin jit" and "por fin una app para jugar PS2"】
  2. YouTube organic reviews: the YouTube Data API found 26 videos with Zeta in the title, about 89K views combined, 24 of them posted in 2026-10. The top one is ESMANDAU (Spanish) with 10-21 at 24K views. The official "ZETA" channel's PS2 demo got 11K. SEGARETTE, Samoel Filho, No_oneup, and Thai and Indonesian channels are all making tutorials. WebSearch also surfaced a few popular videos titled "NEW ALL IN ONE EMULATOR FOR iOS… WITHOUT JIT." [Confirmed]
  3. TikTok creators and tutorials: Searched TikHub for "zeta emulator / zeta emulador / zeta ps2 / emulador ps2 iphone". Videos that explicitly mention zeta: about 35, totaling roughly 1.3M views (less once unrelated same-name content like esports teams and sororities is removed). Relevant ones include: IQ 087.n (Arabic) 100K, TH numwanshop 98K, DE sleex98 90K ("Cars auf dem iPhone 17 Pro Max mit ZETA"), ID bggadget22 75K, TH oil_beam multiple posts at 2–40K. Videos that don't mention zeta but very likely cover the same app: US/MX cristhianmolinero1 10-13's "Cómo jugar PlayStation 2 en tu iPhone" at 245K (this account also posted a Zeta Wii video 11-01). [Confirmed for part of this; the rest is inference.]
  4. ASO: console names stacked directly in the title (PS2/3DS/Wii/PSP/GBA/NDS), localized into 10 languages ("Emulador PS2", "игровой эмулятор", "游戏模拟器"). The website zemu.app has SEO landing pages such as "PS2 Emulator for iPhone" and "3DS/Wii/Wii U/GameCube emulator iPhone", in 9 language versions. [Confirmed; share of search traffic unknown]
  5. Cold start via limited-time free offers in Chinese circles: 2026-08-30/31 ran an "in-app purchase free for a limited time" promo (free lifetime Pro), covered by Mergeek, X, and Taiwanese YouTube tutorials. The cn store had 804 cumulative ratings at the time. [Confirmed]
  6. Paid ads: metaads (app_link / ad), tiktokads (status unconfirmed, no advertiser match), and googleads (status low, not running) show no ads for it. The ad libraries only track a fixed list of products, and TikTok ads are only checked for Europe, so not finding ads doesn't mean none were run. Based on current evidence, growth is mainly organic. [Not found]
  7. No Reddit discussion threads found (WebSearch returns nothing for the r/EmulationOniOS threads). Not verified.

6. Revenue

  • Has in-app purchases: Pro monthly subscription at $1.99, one-time purchase from $12.99 to $17.99. Reviews mention "pagué la versión PRO" and "Acabo de conseguir la versión Premium para apoyar al desarrollador" (mx).
  • It only appears on the Top Grossing chart in the Entertainment category, and only in small stores: #37–70 in ru, #22 in ni (10-28), #39 in mo, #48 in ec, #64 in vn, and #72 in co, cl, pe, py (appstore.chart_rank). It has never entered the overall Top Grossing chart. Inference: revenue is small-scale (probably in the range of a few thousand to maybe $10–20K a month, a guess only). Russia can chart, likely because the local Entertainment category has a low bar and users there already play emulators on iOS.

7. Risks

  • Copyright and removal: it ships no ROMs and includes a disclaimer emphasizing "Play backups of games you legally own." But the names use PS2/Wii/3DS trademarks directly, so Nintendo or Sony could file complaints. Apple could also review whether it gets around JIT restrictions by some means, or whether it violates the GPL (Dolphin, PCSX2, and Azahar are all GPL; using these cores in a closed-source release risks reports from the open-source community). Which cores it uses is unverified.
  • Performance: reviews commonly mention PS2/Wii U frame drops and heat, and high hardware requirements. No iPad support, and many users are asking for an iPad version.

8. Why it worked (attribution)

  1. Timing or platform event: Apple allowed emulators but banned JIT, and iOS 26.4 made sideloaded JIT harder. Before 2, nobody had managed "download from the store and play PS2026-09 right away." The most common user reaction is "por fin / hacía falta algo así en iOS" (finally / iOS needed this long ago).
  2. The product itself: PS2, GC/Wii, and Wii U were added one after another, with a release every two weeks (9-20 to 10-26 saw 6 versions), and reviews repeatedly say "cada actualización mejora" (every update makes it better).
  3. Content that spreads itself: scenes like "running God of War 2 / GTA / Dragon Ball on an iPhone" are naturally suited to short videos. Creators and players made videos in Spanish, Thai, Indonesian, Arabic, Portuguese, and German, and users cluster in the countries using those languages, which matches the rating distribution.
  4. ASO and localization: console names in the title, the name localized into 10 languages, and the app itself supporting 33 languages, capturing searches like "emulador ps2 iphone."

9. Differentiation

Unlike single-platform emulators like Delta, PPSSPP, and Gamma, or 2D-platform emulators, and unlike all-in-one shells like Manic, Gamuroid, and JOY, the only real differentiator is "running PS2/Wii/Wii U from the store without JIT". That is the main reason it broke out: growth started with the PS2 launch in late September and surged again when Wii U shipped in early November. Other features (streaming to a TV, combos, skins, cheats) are offered by competitors like Manic and are table stakes, not the deciding factor.

10. What others can learn

  • Watch for the technical gaps left by platform rules, build the one feature others say is impossible, and put it in the title ("No JIT").
  • Stack category keywords in the title, localize the name per language, and build "X on iPhone"-style SEO landing pages on the website.
  • During the cold start, collect ratings through "free IAP" promos in Chinese circles; build something worth filming so creators spread it for you.
  • Free core features plus a cheap one-time Pro purchase (from $12.99) can convert in low-ticket markets like Latin America and Southeast Asia.

11. Still unclear

  • How it runs without JIT (interpreter optimizations? precompilation?), which open-source cores it uses, whether there are GPL issues, and whether Apple, Nintendo, or Sony could get it removed.
  • Who the team is (the entity behind Appx LLC), and whether it has any connection to Chinese all-in-one emulator teams like Manic EMU or JOY.
  • Real download and revenue figures, and the download volume behind the roughly 200 new ratings per day.
  • Whether it runs ads: none found in the libraries, but that can't be ruled out.
  • How the Reddit community reviews it: not found.
