The exam was overhauled and every old textbook became obsolete: an Israeli solo developer shipped a prep App three and a half months before the new "psychometric exam"

What it is A Hebrew iPhone prep App for Israel's university psychometric entrance exam: practice by question type with explanations, full mock exams, AI grading of essays from a photo, vocabulary drills, score estimates, free to start without signing up, subscription from ₪79.90/month.

Why it took off The exam overhaul made all the old content worthless. It launched three and a half months before the first new-format sitting, with no sign-up required, AI essay grading, and fast iteration. It then pulled in new users with SEO/AI-search topic pages and AI-recommended videos on TikTok, timed to the December pre-exam crunch.

CHow you could follow it Don't add yet another App to Israel's PET. Copy the playbook for a different exam: find a minority-language exam whose official overhaul has been announced but hasn't sat yet, start 3–4 months early with AI-built question banks and essay grading, add a no-signup diagnostic plus a paywall, then capture search traffic with "what changed" topic pages.

Grade C: the overhaul-plus-AI-question-bank playbook is worth learning, but this niche has now filled up with a dozen new Apps doing the same thing. The market is one country, tens of thousands of test-takers a year, and demand drops off after the exam. The features have no moat, so copying it directly isn't worth it. Gossip in small circles

Israeli students take the "psychometric exam" (PET) to get into university. Starting with the sitting in December 2026, English was split off into its own test and the whole exam lost an hour. Old books, old question banks and old Apps all became obsolete overnight. A solo developer named Ilana Tamir shipped the Hebrew App "פסיכומטרי פלוס" (Psychometric Plus) in August. In the first week of November its rating count rose by 22, and in the Israel store it climbed from #75 to #31 on the Education Top Grossing chart. But a dozen new Apps have entered this niche this year. It's ahead because of timing and execution, not because it built something no one else could.

Two comments from Sep 15

On 2026 September 15, two reviews landed on the same day in the App Store Israel store. One is five stars and says one word: "Perfect." The other is two stars, titled "Needs honesty":

"I bought it because a pile of TikTok videos said it helped them, and it turned out those were AI videos someone paid to make. What's disappointing is the lying itself, not the real results."

Going further back, on Aug 23 a test-taker wrote: "I noticed I was studying while waiting for the bus. A minute here, five there, adds up to an hour a day! It mainly boosted my Chinese reading section."

These three reviews are pretty much the whole story of this App. Test-takers really want to drill on their phones in small chunks, and it does that well. Its AI-recommended videos on TikTok pull in new users, and even after they were exposed as fake, the App still gained traction.

What it is

A Hebrew PET prep App for iPhone only, launched 2026-08-16:

  • Practice by question type: math and verbal, practiced by subtype (algebra, percentages, geometry, analogies, reading comprehension, argument analysis…), with an optional timer. Every question has step-by-step explanations, and it also points out "the trap most people fall into."
  • Full mock exams, AI essay grading (photograph a handwritten essay and it estimates a 1–6 band score, since the real exam is written on paper), spaced-repetition vocabulary, score estimates, and a daily plan.
  • 11-04's 1.0.9 version added "פלוסי AI", an AI tutor you can ask anything. 11 shipped 9 versions that week.
  • No sign-up required: on opening, it runs a short diagnostic (exam date, target score, focus subjects), produces a personalized plan, and then shows the paywall.
  • Pricing: free to start, subscription at ₪79.90/month, ₪119.90 for 3 months, ₪199.90 for 6 months (App Store Israel page, 11-06). Earlier I recorded the price as ₪49.90/month, and reviews in August urged people to "buy the annual plan," so the price has gone up recently and the annual tier has been pulled.

152 ratings, average 4.59 (App Store, 11-06).

Why now

The exam changed. Israel's National Institute for Testing and Evaluation (NITE) set it so that from the December 2026 sitting (12/4, 12/6) the PET covers only verbal and math, with English moved to a separate AMIRNET test. According to NITE's "new structure" page, multiple-choice sections drop from 8 to 5, and the length falls from about three and a half hours to about two and a half. The registration fee drops from ₪665 to ₪495. The essay remains and is worth 25% of the verbal score. NITE published a notice for December candidates in November 5.

With the structure changed, every piece of existing content became worthless, and established institutes and new Apps started on the same line. This App launched in August, just between the last old-format sitting in September and the first new-format sitting in December. Four weeks out from the exam, it's crunch season:

Israel App Store, 10-28 to 11-06. It collected 126 ratings in its first two and a half months, and gained 22 more in the first week of November alone. It has only charted in Israel.

The demand pool is small, but willingness to pay is strong. Online estimates put PET test-takers at about 5.5–60k a year, with four sittings a year (refualaam.co.il). In-person classes cost ₪2,500–5,000, so ₪79.90 a month is almost an impulse buy by comparison.

Where users come from

SEO and AI search (confirmed). The official site psychoplus.co.il has a set of topic pages: psychometric courses, exam overview, exam dates, the new structure (published 9-9), mock exams, vocabulary, essays and math. robots.txt explicitly allows GPTBot, PerplexityBot, ClaudeBot and Google-Extended, with a comment saying the guides are written for AI to cite. The FAQ specifically answers "what changed in the December 2026 exam." Searching the brand name puts it first, but for generic terms like "App psychometric course," government sites and established institutes still rank above it. How much traffic the generic terms bring hasn't been verified.

AI-recommended videos on TikTok (partly confirmed). The two-star review above is the evidence. I couldn't find its official account on TikTok or those videos. They may have been deleted, or they may have been ads, which search can't surface.

In-app prompts for ratings (inferred). Only 152 of the 6 ratings have text. Five-star reviews saying "it clearly raised my score" appeared on 18 August and 20 August, days 2–4 after launch. The timing doesn't quite add up, which suggests early favorable reviews were seeded. Not verified.

Not found: whether it runs Meta or Google search ads can't be seen from outside. Nobody on X or in the media has mentioned it.

Who it's competing with

Lots, and most of them appeared in 2026. The overhaul is one reason. The other is that building a Hebrew question-bank App with AI has become very cheap.

App Store Israel storefront 10-28 to 11-06; each vendor's site and TikTok, 11-06.

In 10 days its rating count rose by 23, versus up to 4 for similar apps. It leads this batch of new apps, but has no feature moat: question bank, explanations, mock exams, essay scoring, and personalized plans all appear almost word for word on competitors' lists. It leads in three places: no sign-up required, fastest onboarding; essay practice with photo-based AI grading that matches the real exam; and it launched early, iterates fast, and converts well on the store page.

It also has gaps. The App Store description still says you can practice 'English' as of 11-06, and the mock exam is 'an essay plus eight sections', which is the old exam structure. Its own website's new-structure page, however, lists five sections (inference: the store copy wasn't updated to match; what's actually in the app is unverified).

If it were you

C. Copying it in Israel now is already late; what's worth learning is a 'reform window' playbook. The reform is public and everyone can see it; more than a dozen apps have already crowded in this year, all using the same AI question bank plus SEO plus TikTok approach. The market is one country with tens of thousands of test-takers a year, and demand drops sharply after the exam, while the government's free courses are siphoning off users.

Who it suits: one or two people who know a minority language, can get the local exam syllabus, and can do SEO and short video.

Who it doesn't suit: anyone who wants to head-to-head compete on Israel's PET (the December sitting is four weeks away and there are already a dozen-plus apps); anyone who can't match local-language content quality (wrong questions or explanations get called out immediately); anyone who wants long-term retention and renewal revenue (users leave after the exam).

How to do it: copy the mechanism, swap the exam. Find an exam or rule reform that's officially announced but hasn't started testing yet, ideally a minority language, single country, with test-takers willing to pay: national civil-service exams, driving theory tests, civil service, professional licenses. Launch 3–4 months ahead, use AI to build out the question bank, step-by-step explanations, and essay grading; offer a free no-sign-up diagnostic, connect it to a personalized plan, then add a paywall. If you're already in Israel, fill the gaps it left: an Android version (it's iPhone-only), and Arabic-speaking test-takers (PET has an Arabic version, and existing Arabic apps have fewer than 70 ratings in total).

How to acquire users: build a topic page for each test point, plus an FAQ page on 'what the reform actually changed'; allow AI crawlers so you pick up search and AI-answer traffic; post question-explanation short videos on TikTok and recruit test-takers for real feedback. Don't pose as test-takers with AI; that has already earned this category bad reviews.

When to get in: launch three months before the first sitting of the new exam. By one month before the exam, you get what Israel looks like now: a dozen-plus apps sprinting at once.

Where this could be wrong: ① After the December sitting, its ratings are still climbing and it stays in the top 40 of Top Grossing, suggesting ongoing demand from the later sittings is larger than expected and the PET niche can still fit more players; ② if the reform you find already has established local schools shipping new apps the same month the reform is announced, then the 'same starting line' assumption fails; ③ conversely, if it drops off the charts after December, that suggests this type of app only captures the money from one exam, so you need to work out whether a single cram season can pay back your costs.

Data sources: our appstore database (app_profile / app_day, 2026-10-28 to 11-06, Israel storefront), iTunes lookup, App Store page, the official site psychoplus.co.il, NITE (Israel's National Institute for Testing and Evaluation) website, TikTok (TikHub), Jina/Exa/Brave search.

One line

This is a Hebrew-language prep app for Israel's university entrance Psychometric Entrance Test (PET), iPhone only: question bank by section, full mock exams, AI essay grading, spaced-repetition vocabulary, score estimates, and a daily plan; free to start, subscription to pay. The developer, Ilana Tamir, is an individual developer, listed on 2026-08-16.

Verdict

It took off mainly because it hit the exam reform window: NITE announced that from the 2026 December sitting (12/4, 12/6), English would be removed from the PET and tested separately as AMIRNET, and the exam would be shortened by one hour. Old textbooks and old apps became obsolete overnight, and test-takers were looking for practice matching the new structure. It launched about 3.5 months before the exam and executed the SEO/GEO landing pages, sign-up-free onboarding, and AI essay grading package most completely. With about 4 weeks left before the exam, it's in peak cram season, and among a batch of similar new apps that clearly appeared at the same time and were built quickly with AI assistance, it has gained the most ratings. Its differentiation is mainly polish and go-to-market, not technical moat: with the same feature list, at least five or six other new apps are doing the same.

  • Rating gains over 10 days for similar apps (our database): אנגלית בקלות (English made easy, AMIRNET track, launched 2025-03) +3, but its best Top Grossing rank is #10; פסיכו-בוסט (Psycho-Boost) +3, best Top Grossing #29; Boost +4, Top Grossing 62; the rest were basically 0. In the PET niche, its download growth is the fastest (by rating growth), and its revenue rank is also in the top three.
  • Only charted in one country: Israel.
  • Current price (App Store page, 11-06): monthly subscription ₪79.90, 3 months ₪119.90, 6 months ₪199.90. The price recorded at recall was ₪49.90/month, indicating a recent price increase. 8-20 has a review urging people to 'buy the annual subscription', so an annual plan may have existed at the time and was since removed.
  • Versions ship fast: 8-16 to 11-04 shipped 1.0.1 to 1.0.9, 9 versions in all. 1.0.9 added "Psagi AI," an AI tutor you can ask anything.

2. Competitors

This niche is crowded, and most of the players appeared in the last 2026 years. The trigger was the reform, and building a Hebrew-language app with AI now costs very little.

3. Growth tactics (evidence)

  1. SEO/GEO landing pages (confirmed): psychoplus.co.il's sitemap lists topic pages such as koras-psychometri (psychometric course), psychometri (the exam), moadim (exam dates), mivne-hadash (new structure, updated 9-9), simulatzyot (mock exams), otzar-milim (vocabulary), chibur (essay writing), kamuti (math), and more. robots.txt explicitly allows GPTBot, PerplexityBot, ClaudeBot and Google-Extended, with a comment saying "the guides are written to be cited by AI." The FAQ specifically answers "what changed in the 2026 December exam." Searching its brand name with Jina puts it first. For generic terms like "קורס פסיכומטרי באפליקציה" (psychometric course in an app), government sites and older institutions still take the top spots, so how much traffic the generic terms bring is unverified.
  2. TikTok videos (partly confirmed): one 2-star review on 9-15 says: "I bought it because lots of TikTok videos said it helped them, and those were paid AI-generated videos." That suggests it ran AI-generated UGC-style videos on TikTok (AI avatars or "student testimonials"). Searching TikHub for terms like "פסיכומטרי פלוס" turned up no official account and none of those videos. They may have been deleted, or they may be ad creative that isn't searchable. Our recall card also notes "study influencers on TikTok recommend it."
  3. No sign-up, anonymous account, free tier to start (confirmed): both the website and the store listing say "no registration, no forms." It runs a short diagnostic (exam date, target score, focus subjects), then builds a personalized plan, then nudges toward a subscription. That's a standard onboarding-plus-paywall funnel.
  4. In-app rating prompts / early praise (inferred): of 152 ratings, only 6 come with written reviews, and most ratings likely came from in-app prompts. Two five-star ratings, 8-18 and 8-20, showed up 2–4 days after launch. One says "it clearly raised my score." The timing makes that unlikely to be organic, so there may be seeded early praise. Unverified.
  5. Natural exam-season demand (confirmed): by online estimates, roughly 5.5–60k people take the PET each year (refualaam.co.il's estimate, four sittings a year). December was the first sitting under the new format, and education authorities and institutions (Geva, TAU, Globes, NITE) have written extensively about the reform.
  6. Meta ads: our metaads library doesn't cover Israel, so we couldn't check. That doesn't mean they weren't running. Searching X turns up no relevant discussion.

4. Why it took off

  • Timing: the reform made old content obsolete overnight, and the new app started on equal footing with established brands. It launched mid-August, in the window between the September sitting and the first post-reform December sitting. The November push sped things up (weekly rating gain 22, Top Grossing 75→31).
  • Full-featured and well polished: one app covers a question bank with explanations, full mock exams (essay plus 8 more sections, timed by section), photo grading of handwritten essays with score estimates by 1–6 band, spaced repetition, and score prediction. Reviews repeatedly mention "easy interface" and "quick practice on the go." It shipped 9 versions in 11 weeks, so iteration is fast.
  • Price positioning: ₪79.90/month, far below in-person courses at ₪2,500+ and below Psycho-Boost's high-priced packages. For test takers with clear willingness to pay, it's an impulse buy: much cheaper than hiring a tutor.
  • Distribution playbook: SEO/GEO topic pages plus AI-generated TikTok videos. Competitors are doing both too. It was earlier and more thorough than most.

5. Differentiation

Feature-wise, there's almost no moat. Boost, Psycho-Boost, EduFlow and muchanim have nearly identical feature lists (question bank, explanations, mock exams, essay grading, personalized plans). Where it differs:

  • no sign-up, anonymous accounts, the lowest barrier to getting started;
  • essays can be photographed and graded by AI, which fits the fact that the real exam is handwritten;
  • in the PET space, it has the strongest product polish and store conversion: fastest rating growth, rated 4.6.

These differences are part of why it led the new apps that launched in the same period. Overall, though, it worked mainly because of the reform window plus exam season, and because it executed early and thoroughly.

6. How visible it is

  • Revenue isn't public. We found nothing on X or in the press, and no official TikTok account.
  • But the niche is already saturated: at least a dozen new entrants in 2026 years, all running the same playbook (AI-assisted app building, SEO long-form, short TikTok question videos, creator partnerships). It's a "circulating in a small circle, and the category is already crowded" situation.

7. Takeaways

  • Find an exam or rule change: when the official structure changes, existing content becomes worthless, and new entrants and incumbents start on equal footing. Launch 3–4 months early so you're ramping up when the first new-format exam's crunch season arrives.
  • Niche-language, single-country, high-ticket exams (national civil-service tests, driving licenses, professional licensing) can use AI to quickly build question banks, explanations and essay grading. Pair them with GEO-friendly topic pages (open to AI crawlers) and FAQ-style "what changed" pages to capture search traffic.
  • A free-to-use diagnostic questionnaire that feeds a personalized plan, then a paywall.
  • Risks: demand collapses after the exam and is highly seasonal; the government has free courses that divert users; AI-faked user content on TikTok is already drawing bad reviews and eroding trust.

8. Still unclear

  • Actual revenue: a top-31 Education chart position in Israel is a low bar, and the amount is unverified.
  • We couldn't find the source material for the TikTok AI videos: their reach, whether they were paid or organic, or how much they cost.
  • Whether it runs Meta or Google search ads, and its organic rankings for generic search terms.
  • The developer Ilana Tamir also has Maxer (a face-rating app, launched 2025-11, 13 ratings on the US store, which didn't take off). So the developer is an individual or small team that built a consumer app that flopped and moved into a local niche. Real identity unverified. The recall card's "developer has only 1 apps" is inaccurate.
  • Whether it keeps users after the December exam, and how renewals go.
