The same fishing tutorial in 13 languages: how an Amsterdam solo developer got a fishing journal app into the charts in 8 European countries
What it is A fishing journal app that turns each catch into a local species catalog: log every fish, grade it bronze, silver, or gold by length, with city and province leaderboards and angler competitions. Free to use; Pro costs about €30 a year and unlocks AI fish identification and bite forecasts.
Why it blew up Starting in October, the developer ran a separate TikTok account for each country, posting the same fishing tips videos translated into the local language. Organic views reached several million. The app launched in 15 languages, and small countries' sports charts have low entry barriers, so it charted quickly.
BHow you could follow Don't make another fishing journal in Europe. Take this playbook somewhere it hasn't gone, such as Japan, Brazil, or Southeast Asia, or switch to another outdoor hobby like birdwatching, mushroom foraging, or hunting. Build a local species catalog with leaderboards, prove it with native-language tips videos first, then translate and open accounts in more countries.

VISDEX is a fishing journal app built by a Dutch developer. It launched in July and had almost no users outside the Netherlands before October. Starting Oct 9, it opened 13 TikTok accounts by country and posted the same fishing tips videos translated into each country's language, generating several million organic views in a month. By Oct 28, the app had followed with 15 languages. Over the next 8 days, Google Play installs grew from 4,763 to 12,364, and it appeared on the sports charts in Poland, Germany, Sweden, and Hungary. The product itself is an old category; what's worth studying is this "one script, N countries" approach.
A video on method feeder hit 278k views in Poland
In Nov 1, the TikTok account @visdex.pl posted a video: "Method feeder: the rod tip bends, and the fish has already hooked itself. This is how to catch bream, roach, and carp." No face on camera, just voiceover, covering how long the short hooklength should be and how to rig the bait, ending with a line pointing to the app. By Nov 6, it had 278k views and 4,191 likes.
Three days later, the same video appeared on @visdex.hu in Hungarian, nearly word for word, with 89.6k views. There were also versions on the Dutch, UK, and Italian accounts. Looking through these accounts' videos, titles like "big perch don't hang out with small perch," "drag set to a quarter to a third of the line strength," and "same water, one angler catches three zander while another gets skunked; the difference is what you know before you leave" were each posted in every language. The style is consistent and frequent, which looks like batch production with AI (inference).
The Hungarian account only posted its first video in Oct 29. A week later, VISDEX ranked #3 on the Hungary iOS free Sports chart, when it had only 1 ratings in Hungary (App Store Hungary, 11-06).
What it is
A fishing journal, but built like a collection. Each catch you log (species, length, weight, bait, photo, and spot) lights up in your collection; the Dutch version has 88 species, with automatic bronze, silver, gold, and legendary tiers based on length. Species you haven't caught yet stay empty, waiting for you to fill them.
Around the collection, it adds: national, provincial, and city leaderboards (counting only officially measured catches), angler competitions for friends (most fish, biggest, most species), a daily "bite score" based on wind, pressure, temperature, and moon phase, and per-species minimum sizes, closed seasons, and whether the fish can be kept. The website tagline is "Catch. Collect. Beat your records."
Logging, collection, leaderboards and community are free. Pro unlocks AI fish ID from photos (it also estimates length during a session), a bite forecast for the next week, bait suggestions and full stats. The Dutch store page lists €6.99/month and €29.99/year, with two more tiers at €2.99/month and €19.99/year (App Store Netherlands, 11-06; from outside it isn't clear whether the two price sets are a test). When Pro launched, new users got 3 months free.
The developer is Niels Zwetsloot, based in Amsterdam, and this is his only app.

iOS has only 82 ratings, yet Play has passed 12k installs: European anglers use Android more. The two iOS grossing ranks suggest some people are paying for subscriptions, but the bar for a small-country sports grossing chart is low, so the money can't be large (inference).
Cold start was done locally in the Netherlands. The July 22 Instagram launch post said "427 anglers have logged 1,864 catches and 35 species"; by Nov 2, a Hungarian-account video said "VISDEX already has over 20,000 catches."

The 59 visible Dutch-account videos total 1.85M views, the UK account 39 videos 960k, the Italian account 31 videos 870k. The order accounts were opened matches when each country's chart entries appeared: the Netherlands first, Play Netherlands #4; the Polish account posted a 278k video, Play Poland #7; the Hungarian account came last, iOS Hungary #3. TikTok's European ad library shows nothing for it, so this is all organic traffic.
Most videos only teach technique and don't mention the app. A few do talk about the product, and the pitch is content-style: "A pike caught in Friesland turned into tips for anglers at Masurian lakes a week later, that's how VISDEX works"; "Fish are biting and you're still choosing a species and measuring length? Start a fishing session, snap a photo, and get back to fishing."
Where the localization lands. The Oct 28 1.0.18 update said "VISDEX now supports 15 languages," and store titles were switched to local language too: German reads "Fangbuch & Angeln," Dutch reads "Visdagboek & Vangsten." People who search the brand name from a video land on a page in their own language.
Small-country category charts. In Hungary, Czechia, Romania and similar countries, a few dozen downloads can put an app in the iOS Sports Top Free top 30. Once TikTok pushes it onto a chart, the chart itself adds another layer of exposure.
What's missing. No press coverage found, no discussion on X or Reddit, nothing on Dutch fishing forums. Whether it runs Meta ads is unverified.
Who it's competing with
| Competitors | Status | How VISDEX differs |
|---|---|---|
| Fishbrain | Launched 2012 years ago, claims 15M users; US iOS 76k ratings, Dutch store only 109 | Global, mostly English, weak on local species and regulations |
| Fish AI | Launched 2025 years ago, US iOS 27k ratings, Netherlands 1,320, Android 100k+ | AI Q&A, spots and forecasts, tool-oriented, no collection or local leaderboards |
| VISplanner (the official Dutch angling association) | Dutch store iOS 295 ratings, Sports Top Free #8 | Digital fishing license plus water rules, a must-install, but no journal or social features |
| Fish Deeper, Wanneer Vissen | A hundred to a few hundred ratings each in the Dutch store | One ties into sonar hardware, the other only covers bite timing |
| HengelApp, Fish-Dex, Fishing Journal and others | Listed 2026 years ago, ratings 0–2 | Personal side projects in the same category, with no distribution |

A fishing journal isn't a new idea, Fishbrain has been doing it for over a decade. VISDEX doesn't win on features. It takes the part Fishbrain hasn't covered: smaller European language markets, a local species guide and regulations for each country, and leaderboards at the province or city level. It also doesn't compete with the official Dutch app: the official one handles licenses and rules, VISDEX handles fun. Several similar personal projects appeared around the same time and none gained traction; the difference is the TikTok account setup.
What it hasn't proven yet
- Money. Subscriptions are new and pricing is still being tested. Grossing ranks show up only on small charts like Austria and Germany, and monthly revenue isn't visible from outside.
- Retention. Fishing is seasonal, and fewer people go to the water in European winters. Whether the cohort that joined from October still uses it next spring can't be seen yet.
- How long the content accounts can last. 13 accounts running the same scripts and batch AI-style content. Whether TikTok downranks it is the biggest risk to this approach (inference).
If it were you
B. The approach is clear, cheap, and almost unnoticed, so it's worth trying. But the money-making ability of a fishing journal itself hasn't been proven, and it already covers 15 languages in Europe, so copying its category and region isn't useful. What's worth taking is the approach, applied somewhere else.
Who it suits: individuals or small teams of two or three who know an outdoor hobby well (fishing, birdwatching, mushroom foraging, hunting, metal detecting, diving); people who can batch-produce scripts, voiceovers and image-text videos with AI; people who can build multilingual apps. Ideally you're into the hobby yourself and know which trivia gets views.
Who it doesn't suit: anyone wanting to build another fishing journal in Europe (VISDEX is already there, and so is Fishbrain); anyone aiming at the US English market (Fishbrain and Fish AI are far ahead in scale); people who only want to build product and don't want to post content every day.
How to do it: pick one of two routes. One is to do fishing in a new region: Japan, South Korea, Brazil, Mexico, Southeast Asia, places with large fishing populations, weak local coverage from Fishbrain, and where VISDEX hasn't gone yet. Build a local species guide, regulations, and province/city rankings for each country. The other is to copy the structure for a different hobby: "local species guide + bronze/silver/gold grades + regional leaderboards + competing with friends + local rules", logging free, with Pro selling AI recognition and forecasts at a €20–30 annual tier.
How to get users: do what it does. In one country, post technique-focused short videos in the local language, no face, no hard ads, ten or so a week, and see which topics get views. Then translate the scripts that work into other languages, open a separate account for each country, and make the app title and store page local too. Start with small countries and aim for the category charts, since the bar is low and charting brings free exposure.
When to start: if you're doing fishing, the spring season in the Northern Hemisphere starts around 2027 (3–April), so have the guide, rankings and content accounts ready before then, and use winter to build up content. Doing South America or Southeast Asia isn't tied to this season, so the sooner the better, since once the approach gets noticed, similar accounts will multiply.
Signs you've read it wrong: (1) if in spring 2027 VISDEX's Play install growth doesn't recover to where it is now, and its iOS grossing ranks disappear, that means these users installed but neither paid nor stayed; (2) if your account has been posting for a month and no single video ever tops 10,000 views, the hobby has no audience on TikTok in that country; (3) if TikTok starts mass-throttling faceless AI image-text videos like these, VISDEX's country accounts will all see views drop together.

One line
A fishing log app built by a solo Dutch developer. Caught fish become a collection (88 Dutch species, graded bronze/silver/gold/legendary by length), with AI fish identification, national and provincial/city leaderboards, competitions with other anglers, and a fishing-weather score. Free to use. The Pro subscription unlocks AI, a one-week bite forecast, and full stats.
Conclusion: why it broke out
Starting in Oct 9, it opened a batch of country-specific TikTok accounts posting faceless fishing-tip videos. The same script was translated and posted in each country's language, pulling millions of views in a month. In Oct 28 1.0.18, the app was made available in 15 languages, so wherever a TikTok account launched, that country's store charts followed. The product itself (collection + leaderboards + official rules) gave the videos somewhere to land, but growth came from this multilingual content matrix. The real volume is on Android. The iOS rating count looks small because most of its users are on Android.

- iOS (appstore library, app_day): global rating count 54 (10-28) → 82 (11-06), Netherlands 49 → 66; Dutch average 4.88. iOS Sports Free chart: Hungary #3, Czechia #17, Netherlands #18, Romania #21, Poland #26. Sports Top Grossing chart: Austria #28, Germany #75 (data card). This shows subscription revenue exists, but it is very small.
- Cold start: Jul 22 Instagram launch post reads "427 anglers have logged 1,864 catches across 35 species" (instagram.com/p/DbFzhMVDO-x). This shows a testing round before launch, with seed users from the Netherlands.
- The AppBrain page shows "2026-10-09 removed from the App Store" (appbrain.com/appstore/visdex-visdagboek-vangsten/ios-6775490949). The app is currently listed and being updated normally, so this may have been a brief removal or a rename. Not verified.

- The content is the same script translated into multiple languages: "nylon line stretches about 20% under load," "weighting a float," "method feeder," "a cormorant eats half a kilo of fish a day," "how to catch big pike." These appear across the Dutch, English, Italian, Polish, and Hungarian accounts. No faces shown; image-and-text posts with voiceover, ending by pointing to the app (visdex.app in the bio). It looks like AI-generated content produced in bulk.
- Several posts promote the app itself: "A pike caught in Friesland can help an angler in Sweden. That's how Visdex works" (network-effect pitch), "run your own competitions with fellow anglers," "AI Smart Logging: snap a photo and it identifies the species."
- Timing lines up: the Hungarian account only started posting 10-29, with individual posts at 170K views. It's #3 on the iOS Hungary Sports free chart now (you only need 1 ratings to get there, so the bar is low in small markets). The Dutch account started earliest (10-09) and sits at #4 on Google Play Netherlands. The Polish account's top post hit 277K, and it's #7 on Google Play Poland.
- These are organic posts, not ads. The tiktokads library (EU DSA ad library) returned no results for visdex.
2. Instagram / Facebook profiles (confirmed, minor role)
@visdexapp posted the launch post and Reels ("Every catch tells a story"). The Facebook page (id 61589058429013) has a video post saying "A fishing diary you'll actually keep up with. Log a catch in ten seconds." Whether it runs Meta ads is not verified: the metaads library doesn't list this Page, but that library only covers advertisers discovered via keyword search, so a missing result doesn't prove no ads were run.
3. Localization + store search
1.0.18 (10-28)'s update notes say "VISDEX now supports 15 languages," and store titles are localized in each country. For example, Germany's is "VISDEX: Fangbuch & Angeln," and the Netherlands' is "Visdagboek & Vangsten." This gives the TikTok traffic and store search a local-language landing point. The launch post says "search VISDEX and you'll find it," relying on brand-name search.
4. Press, X, Reddit
Nothing found. x-radar returned 60 posts for visdex in 0 days. There are no discussions on Reddit or Dutch fishing forums (visserslatijn, etc.), no press coverage, and no public revenue figures.
Competitors
| Product | Where | Launched | Scale | How VISDEX differs |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Fishbrain | iOS/Android | 2012 | Claims 15M users (careers.fishbrain.com); US iOS 76k ratings, but only 109 in the Netherlands | Global, US-leaning, mostly English. Weak coverage of Dutch species and regulations. VISDEX offers localized collection, regulations, and provincial/city leaderboards. |
| Fish AI(Liftoff Labs) | iOS/Android | 2025-01 | US iOS 27k ratings, Netherlands 1,320; Android 100k+ | AI Q&A, fishing spots, and forecasts. Leans toward tools and subscriptions. No collection mechanic and no local leaderboards. |
| VISplanner (Koninklijke Sportvisunie, the Dutch official angling association) | iOS/Android/web | New version 2026-06 | Netherlands iOS 295 rating, Sports Free chart #8 | Official digital fishing license (VISpas) + water-rules map. A must-install, but no logging, social, or gamification features. VISDEX adds the "fun" half. |
| Fish Deeper | iOS/Android | 2019 | Netherlands iOS 351 rating | Pairs with sonar hardware |
| Wanneer Vissen | iOS | 2018 | Netherlands 112 rating | Bite-time forecasts only |
| HengelApp, Fish-Dex, Fishing Journal: Angler Log, GILLI | iOS | 2026 | Rating 0–2 | Similar solo projects with very little traction. Fish-Dex (US) is closest in name and in the "fish encyclopedia" concept. |
| FishAngler, Fishing Points, Anglr, Elevated Fishing | iOS/Android | Years | Medium | Map/logging tools with no localized collection mechanic |
In short: fishing logs are an established category, and the big player is Fishbrain. VISDEX doesn't win on features. It wins on the combination of a small European language market + a collection game mechanic + content distribution.
Why it's working
- TikTok multi-country account matrix: 13 accounts, several million organic views in a month. Account launch timing matches when each country's charts appeared (see the table above).
- Small-country sports charts have a low bar: Hungary iOS Sports #3 with just 1 ratings, and TikTok pushes it onto the chart, which adds another layer of store exposure.
- The product gives the videos a payoff: "catch collection + bronze/silver/gold grades + leaderboards + competing with fishing mates" is shareable on its own and gives people a reason to stay. One five-star review from a 14-year-old German user: "I used to forget what fish I caught, how big, how heavy."
- The big players don't cover it: Fishbrain has only 109 ratings on Dutch iOS, and the official Dutch VISplanner only handles licenses and rules. Localized catch-logging with social features is an empty space.
- Android first: European anglers skew Android. 12k installs on Play, only 82 ratings on iOS.
Differentiation
Localization + gamification: a species encyclopedia per country (88 species in the Netherlands), automatic grading by length, national/provincial/city leaderboards, species-specific rules (minimum sizes, closed seasons), in 15 languages. Compared with Fishbrain, it feels like a Pokédex rather than a tool. That's real reason people keep using and sharing it, but growth mostly comes from the TikTok matrix: differentiation decides whether people who arrive from a video stay, not whether anyone shows up.
What to borrow
- Prove the content and product in one small country (the Netherlands) first, then translate the same scripts into N languages and open one account per country. Content cost barely changes, and reach multiplies.
- The content is tips and trivia (line tension, float shotting), not hard selling, with a line at the end pointing to the app. Niche interest groups cold-start fast on TikTok.
- Targets small-country category charts: the bar is very low, and charting itself is free exposure.
- "Catch collection + grading" gamifies a logging tool, so people want to show it off and come back.
- Complements the official app rather than competing for its must-have use case.
Visibility
Barely known: no press coverage, nobody mentions it on X or Reddit, no public revenue. The only place you see it is TikTok itself. Copycats: similar small projects (HengelApp, Fish-Dex, etc.) appeared independently around the same time. No sign of anyone copying it.
Unknowns
- How much subscription revenue it makes (we only know its iOS chart positions in Austria and Germany Sports Top Grossing), what Pro costs, and retention.
- Whether it runs ads on Meta/Google (metaads and tiktokads both show nothing, but coverage is limited).
- What AppBrain's "10-09 removal" refers to.
- Whether the developer is the PwC tech consultant Niels Zwetsloot on LinkedIn (same name, unverified). The legal pages are hosted on GitHub under user superniels123, which matches Instagram @superniels123.
- Whether the TikTok videos are AI-generated; this is only inferred from style.
- The Dutch account's profile shows 114 posts, but only 59 were captured, so total views are underestimated.
