3 ratings made it into the UK food chart's top 50: Scoffy didn't break out, the chart is just shallow and this niche is already crowded
What it is A UK AI meal-plan app: pick your supermarket, set a budget, household size and dietary needs, and it outputs a 1 to 7 day menu plus a shopping list priced at that supermarket. Access requires a £7.99/week or £34.99/year subscription.
Why it took off It didn't really: the UK Food & Drink Top Grossing chart has a very low bar (#51 had only 1 ratings). A hard paywall turned a small number of downloads into subscriptions, and Meta Reels ads in October pushed it up the chart, after which it settled back to #50 to #80.
CHow you could follow Don't chase it in the UK. Copy the playbook of Whipp and mise: go to single markets not yet localized, such as Australia, the Netherlands, or the Nordics. Use local supermarket logos and budget angles in creatives, a hard paywall with weekly subscriptions, Meta ads plus a TikTok account network for UGC, and launch fast.

On 2026 October 31 at 5:39 pm, a newly created Facebook page "Scoffy - Meal Planner" posted a Reel: "Set your budget, Scoffy plans your week's meals, and the recipes and full shopping list are priced at the supermarket you actually use." Below it, a checklist: ASDA, Tesco, Sainsbury's, Aldi, Morrisons, Waitrose, Iceland, M&S, Ocado. Three days later, this app, only six weeks old, climbed to #38 on the UK App Store Food & Drink Top Grossing chart, with just 1 ratings at the time. This piece explains how that ranking happened, who is actually earning money from "pick a supermarket + set a budget → weekly menu" apps, and whether you can still get in.
What Scoffy is
It's built by UK indie developer Sahal Adan, who has only this one app under his name, launched in 2026 September 22, English only, listed only in the UK. There is no website; the privacy policy sits in a repo on his personal GitHub named rilo-food-legal. He previously made an AI flashcard app called "Rilo AI - Smart Flashcards", now removed, and moved from vocabulary to food.
How it works: you tell it how many days to plan (1 to 7 days, or just Mon/Wed/Fri), which meals you want (e.g. only breakfast and lunch), how many people, your budget, which supermarket you shop at, dietary restrictions and allergies, and what's already in your fridge. It picks from a set of existing recipes and outputs a day-by-day menu and a shopping list priced at that supermarket. There's also "Cook Up": take a photo of your fridge and get one dish you can make. No account is needed to start.
Pricing is a hard paywall: you can set up and preview the first plan for free, but everything after requires a Scoffy Pro subscription: £7.99 per week, £34.99 per year, first-year promo £24.99 (UK App Store page, 11-06). The 5 November 1.0.6 update notes say only "see highlights of your new plan right away", which changed the preview step before the paywall.
How it reached #38
First, its ranking on the UK Food & Drink category chart (App Store UK, 10-31 to 11-06):
| Date | Top Grossing | Top Free | Cumulative ratings |
|---|---|---|---|
| 10-31 | 186 | – | 1 |
| 11-02 | 109 | – | 1 |
| 11-03 | 38 | 199 | 1 |
| 11-04 | 58 | – | 2 |
| 11-05 | 80 | – | 2 |
| 11-06 | 50 | – | 3 |
Two things line up. First, the jump started right after the Facebook Reel went out. It hit the top and then fell back to #50 to #80, which looks like a single paid-ad pulse, not word of mouth compounding. Its store privacy label also says it uses "purchase history, identifiers" to track you across apps, the typical sign of ad attribution being wired in.
Second, this chart is shallow. On the 6 Nov chart, #49 has only 4 ratings, #51 has only 1 ratings, and #47 has 11. A few weekly and annual subscriptions a day is enough to reach the top 50. Scoffy has appeared on the Top Free chart only once (11-03, #199), which means downloads are tiny and a hard paywall turns the few downloads it gets straight into revenue. That's why it shows up on Top Grossing rather than Top Free. Going by the size of its chart neighbors, its daily revenue is probably in the tens of pounds (estimate, unverified).
Searching for Scoffy on TikTok, X, Reddit, Product Hunt, and in the media turns up nothing. The only known acquisition channel is Reels ads on Meta. How many ads ran and for how long is not visible from outside.
This has already been done by a dozen-plus players this summer
What's actually worth watching isn't Scoffy but the niche behind it. Since June 2026, a string of apps with nearly the same template has appeared in the UK Food & Drink Top Grossing top 50: "tell us where you shop, your budget, household size, dietary needs → weekly menu + priced shopping list."
| App | Launched | Current scale (UK store, 11-06) | Compared with Scoffy |
|---|---|---|---|
| Whipp: Meal Planner & Recipes | 2026-06-12 | Food & Drink Top Grossing #1, overall Top Grossing #59; 163 ratings, 7 new in 138 days | Same budget-based total pricing, three months earlier, Spanish version already out |
| mise - meal planner | 2026-06-10 | Food & Drink Top Grossing #2; 1,649 ratings in the UK, 1,778 in Germany | Plans built around UK supermarkets + calorie goals, grew via TikTok |
| Yuma: Weekly Meal Planner | 2026-09-15 | Launched with German, Spanish, Italian and Dutch on day one, 500 ratings in the French store | Same template, rolled out across countries |
| Herbi | 2026-06-16 | Top Grossing #7,259 in ratings | Adds saving recipes from TikTok / Instagram |
| Measy, Savour, Chow, Repa, Quickle and others | 2026-06 to 09 | Top 20 to 125 on the chart, single-digit to dozens of ratings | Nearly identical; Savour launched the same week as Scoffy, also pitching "real supermarket prices" |
| Mealia | 2024-03 | Top Grossing #8,4,681 in ratings | Already doing Tesco, Asda, Sainsbury's and Morrisons shopping |
| Meal Planner inside the Tesco app | Announced by 2026-08-19, in testing | Tesco app 1.39M ratings | Free, AI builds the menu and adds everything to your Tesco basket in one tap, Tesco only |
Even later entrants exist: Grocely (launched 2026-10-27) has a store description that nearly mirrors Scoffy sentence by sentence ("pick your supermarket, set a budget… free to download, paid subscription required") and lists the same six or seven supermarkets, and it has already reached #109 on the Top Grossing chart. Rather than copying Scoffy, everyone seems to be copying Whipp and mise.
Some assume that "pricing by supermarket" requires proprietary local retail data, and that this is a barrier. The table suggests otherwise: at least seven or eight apps are doing it, UK supermarket prices have existing price-comparison sources, and a small app called Basketr compared 10 supermarkets single-handedly. Scoffy's claim to add the list "item by item" into supermarket online carts most likely means jumping to the supermarket website and searching each item one by one, not a real API (inference, not verified by installing the app).
Scoffy's own differences, supporting Iceland, M&S and Ocado, freely choosing days and number of servings, recipes from a fridge photo, no sign-up, are all details, not the reason it charted.
What the apps that made money did right
Got there first. Whipp and mise both launched in June, timed to when UK cost-of-living pressure was at its peak and "budget grocery shopping" resonated most. Both reached #1 on the Food & Drink Top Grossing chart.
Flooded TikTok, not just Meta. Searching TikTok for mise turns up a long string of "eating / meal prep" accounts posting the same kind of video: kenzieeatsss posted "I wish I knew about this sooner" in October 24, 275k views; the official account posted one in June 13 with 879k views. There are also accounts like tom.cooks.more, tom.cooks.more5 and charlie.cooks.more that are clearly opened in batches, posting daily in mid-June with captions like "this saves me every week" and "my ADHD brain is saved", tagged #tesco #mealplanner (TikTok, 11-06). The inference is that a self-run or outsourced account network is seeding UGC. Scoffy has no TikTok presence at all.
Early multi-country. mise has more ratings in the German store than in the UK; Yuma shipped five languages on day one. Supermarket names are themselves ad hooks, and switching countries means swapping out the supermarket logos, so creatives and product need little rework.
If it were you
In short: Scoffy itself has nothing worth copying, and the UK market is already full. The playbook of "local supermarkets + budget + hard paywall + short-video volume" is clear and makes money, but the opportunity now lies in single markets outside the UK that mise and Yuma haven't reached yet, and you need to move fast.
- Who it's for: small teams that already run Meta / TikTok ads and can churn out short-form video creative in bulk; developers who live in a non-English country and know the local supermarkets and eating habits.
- Who it's not for: people who only want to write code and don't want to touch paid acquisition. These apps take a week or two to build; the difference is all in getting users. Scoffy is an example of someone who only built the product and spent a little on ads, and it's making tens of pounds a day.
- How to build it: pick a market with concentrated supermarket chains, a hot grocery-price conversation, and no localized copycat yet, like Australia (Woolworths, Coles, Aldi), the Netherlands (Albert Heijn, Jumbo), the Nordics, or Poland. First check whether mise, Yuma, or Whipp already ship a local-language version or cover local supermarkets. Copy the product template: pick a supermarket, set a budget, household size, and dietary restrictions, then output a menu and a shopping list with prices. Source prices from public price-comparison data or by scraping supermarket web pages; don't try to negotiate API access at the start. Copy the monetization too: free setup and preview, paywall when the first plan is generated, weekly subscription plus annual subscription.
- How to get users: the core creative is "local supermarket logo with a checkmark + how much you saved on the weekly bill." Run Meta Reels to drive volume, and in parallel post daily from a few local-language meal-prep accounts on TikTok. Copy mise's "I wish I knew about this sooner" hook style. Put local-language keywords like "meal planner / weekly menu" in the store listing name.
- When to move: mise and Yuma are adding languages one country at a time, and supermarkets like Tesco are shipping free versions themselves. For a market you like, you should launch within the next month or two. Once big local supermarket apps launch their own meal plans, or mise releases a local-language version, you're too late.
- Signs you misread it: after two or three weeks of ads, paid conversion doesn't cover the ad cost, and your rank only jumps during the ad days and drops back afterward. That's how Scoffy went. Or the supermarket apps in your chosen market already give this feature away for free.
A final warning for anyone finding opportunities from the charts: #51 on the UK Food & Drink Top Grossing chart has only 1 ratings. On a chart this shallow, a rank only tells you someone paid, not that the product took off. Check whether ratings are growing before you check rank.

Scoffy - Meal Planner (iOS 6776258774) research report
In one line: Scoffy is a meal-planning app by a solo UK developer (Sahal Adan), launched 2026-09-22. It lets you pick a supermarket and set a budget, then gives you a weekly menu and a shopping list priced at that supermarket. It has a hard paywall (£7.99/week, £34.99/year). It didn't "break out": it reached the UK Food & Drink Top Grossing top 50 because that chart has a very low bar (#49 and #51 have only 4 and 1 ratings), plus it bought some volume with Facebook/Instagram Reels starting late October. The idea has had about ten players in the UK since 2026 summer (Whipp, mise, Measy, Yuma, Savour...), and Tesco's own app is testing an AI meal plan internally. Scoffy is a late follower in this wave, not a leader.
1. Data (appstore database, 2026-11-06)
- Only charted in the gb store; English only; the developer account has only this one app (iTunes lookup, 2026-11-06).
- UK Food & Drink category chart ranks (chart_rank):
| Date | Top Grossing | Top Free | Cumulative ratings |
|---|---|---|---|
| 10-31 | 186 | – | 1 |
| 11-02 | 109 | – | 1 |
| 11-03 | 38 | 199 | 1 |
| 11-04 | 58 | – | 2 |
| 11-05 | 80 | – | 2 |
| 11-06 | 50 | – | 3 |
Best showing was #38 on 11-03 (the recall card's estimate "about 42–50" was a bit conservative). Never charted overall.
- Only 3 ratings (average 5.0), with 2 new in 7 days. It appeared once on the Top Free chart at #199 in 11-03, so downloads are small; the grossing rank comes from a small number of paid subscriptions.
- How low this chart's bar is: on the same day, UK Food & Drink Top Grossing #49 Cuisinez pour bébé had only 4 ratings, #51 Chow had only 1, and #47 RecipeLab had 11 (appstore v_chart + app_profile, 2026-11-06). In other words, a handful of weekly or annual subscriptions a day is enough to reach the top 50. Inference: Scoffy's daily revenue is probably in the tens-of-pounds range (unverified, estimated from its neighbors' scale).
- Pricing (UK App Store page, 2026-11-06): Scoffy Pro is £7.99/week, £34.99/year, with a first-year offer at £24.99. You can set up and preview your first plan for free; everything else requires a subscription. Version 1.0.6 (updated 11-05); the release notes say "see the highlights of your new plan right away," which is a preview ahead of paywall optimization.
- Developer background: the privacy policy is hosted on the personal GitHub page sahal1234565/rilo-food-legal ("Legal and support pages for Rilo Food"); there is no website. The previous app, "Rilo AI - Smart Flashcards" (id 6758162087), no longer appears in iTunes lookup, and the developer page now shows only Scoffy. So the developer moved from AI flashcards to food. A UK-based LinkedIn profile for Sahal Adan exists; whether it's the same person is unverified.
2. Competitors: the UK "choose a supermarket + budget → priced menu" niche has been crowded for 2026 years
On the UK Food & Drink Top Grossing chart (gb, 2026-11-06), the top 50 includes a string of new meal-planning apps from the past 2026 years. Their descriptions follow nearly the same template: "Tell us where you shop, your budget, household size, and dietary needs → a weekly menu + a shopping list with prices" (appstore app_text).
| Competitors | Platform | Launched | Scale (appstore library, 2026-11-06) | How Scoffy differs |

| Yuma: Weekly Meal Planner(Adrien Long) | iOS | 2026-09-15 | Best UK category rank #1; localized into German, Spanish, Italian, Dutch; French store 500 ratings | Same template, but rolled out across many countries |
| Savour - Meal Planner(Try Savour) | iOS | 2026-09-20 | 6 rating | Built on "real supermarket prices"; claims 500 recipes priced at Tesco and others; launched the same week as Scoffy |
| Chow / Repa / NeatEat / Potto / Quickle | iOS | 2026-06~09 | Both in F&D Top Grossing #30–125 | Quickle's pitch is "import from a TikTok link + fill your supermarket cart" |
| Mealia - AI Grocery Assistant | iOS | 2024-03 | #8,4,681 rating | Has long done "Tesco/Asda/Sainsbury's/Morrisons shopping" |
| Cherrypick / Pepesto | iOS/web | 2021 / 2023 | Cherrypick 525 ratings | Veteran player; integrated with UK supermarkets for ordering early on. Pepesto uses an AI agent to add the list to the supermarket cart |
| Mob / ReciMe | iOS/Android | 2024 / 2021 | 5,085 / 20,593 ratings, F&D Top Grossing #3–4 | Mainly a recipe community; the shopping list is a side feature |
| Basketr | iOS | 2026-05 | 3 rating | Only compares prices across 10 UK supermarkets; no menu planning |
| Tesco app has a built-in Meal Planner | Big-company features | Announced 2026-08-19, in beta | Tesco app 1.39M ratings | AI builds the menu and adds it to the Tesco cart in one tap; Tesco only (Tesco help page, 2026-08-19) |
| Making Tesco menus with ChatGPT | Big-company features | – | TikTok videos demonstrate "doing the whole Tesco shop and menu with ChatGPT" | Free, universal |
| HelloFresh / Gousto | iOS/Android | 2015 | HelloFresh 86k ratings | Sells you the boxes, doesn't shop for you |
Copycats / same-period lookalikes: Grocely - Budgeted Meal Plans (AXIOM STUDIOS LIMITED, launched 2026-10-27, 5 weeks after Scoffy). Its description is nearly identical to Scoffy's: "Choose your supermarket, set your budget… free to download. A paid subscription is required…" It lists the same supermarkets: Tesco, Aldi, Waitrose, Sainsbury's, Morrisons, Asda. It already hit #109 on the F&D Top Grossing chart (appstore library). But it's less that they copied Scoffy and more that everyone is copying the Whipp/mise template.
The recall card says "pricing per supermarket + one-tap add-to-cart needs local retail data, you can't fake it with an AI wrapper." That judgment doesn't hold. Several rivals do per-supermarket pricing: Measy, Yuma, Savour, Whipp, Grocely, Mealia, and Quickle. UK supermarket price data is available from existing comparison sources (Basketr built 10 stores alone). Scoffy's "item by item" add to supermarket cart most likely means opening the supermarket's website or app and searching, not a real API.
3. Growth tactics
| Channel | Evidence | Confirmed |
|---|---|---|
| Paid Reels on Facebook / Instagram | The Facebook page "Scoffy - Meal Planner" (page id 61591520525886) posted a Reel on 2026-10-31: "Set your budget and Scoffy plans your week of meals… priced at your shop. Works with: ASDA / Tesco / Sainsbury's / Aldi / Morrisons / Waitrose / Iceland / M&S / Ocado." The page is newly created. The recall card records it running Reel ads. The timing lines up with its Top Grossing run, #10-31 on 186 → 11-03, #38 later. | Partly confirmed (the post is confirmed; our metaads library doesn't track this Page, so the number of live ads is unknown) |
| Store search (ASO) | Name "Meal Planner", subtitle "Weekly Recipes & Shopping List". On Apple's "customers also bought" it's linked to Pepesto, Cherrypick, Herbi, and Mealia. | Inferred |
| TikTok creators / UGC | TikHub search for "scoffy meal planner" returned 0 related results. Similar apps mise, Potto, NeatEat, and Piatto all have plenty of creator videos on TikTok (one Potto video has 29M views). | Confirmed not done |
| X / press / Reddit / Product Hunt | x-radar found 0 results for "scoffy" over 60 days. Jina/Brave search found no coverage at all. | Confirmed none |
4. Why it charted (rather than "breaking out")
- The chart bar is low: to reach the top 50 of the UK Food & Drink Top Grossing chart you need only a few subscriptions. #51 had only 1 ratings.
- Hard paywall + weekly subscription: £7.99/week, and only the first meal plan is previewable. This design monetizes a small number of downloads, pushing the app onto the Top Grossing chart rather than Top Free.
- Meta Reels started late October: 10-31 posted the ad, 11-03 pushed it to #38, then it slid back to #50–80. That points to a paid-acquisition burst, not organic growth.
- It rides a demand that's already been validated: under UK cost-of-living pressure, "plan meals by budget, using my usual supermarket" was already shown to make money this summer by Whipp and mise (both reached the F&D Top Grossing #1). Scoffy is a follower.
5. Differentiation
What Scoffy can claim as its own: it supports 9 supermarkets (adds Iceland, M&S, Ocado), 1–7 flexible days with the option to pick non-consecutive dates, selection of specific meal slots (e.g., brunch only), "Cook Up" to make recipes from a photo of your fridge, and no sign-up required. These are details. Compared with Whipp, Measy, or Yuma there's no structural difference, and they aren't why it charted. It charted because of a low chart bar plus a bit of paid ads.
6. Takeaways
- The playbook for this opportunity is now clear: localize around a single country's supermarkets (the supermarket names are the ad hook), use a hard paywall with a weekly subscription, and put supermarket logos and shopping lists in Meta Reels creative.
- The ones that actually broke out shipped first and expanded across countries (mise has more German ratings than UK ones, and Yuma launched in 5 languages at once). Still underserved are single markets outside the UK (Australia's Woolworths/Coles, Germany's Rewe/Edeka, the Netherlands' Albert Heijn), and reaching them probably requires TikTok creators, not just Meta paid ads.
- Nothing in Scoffy itself is worth copying.
7. Uncertain
- How many Meta ads it ran and for how long: metaads doesn't track its Page, and we only saw the 10-31 post.
- Revenue and retention: with 3 ratings and a chart presence in only one store, they can't be inferred. The estimate of a few dozen pounds a day is inferred from the neighbors on the chart.
- Whether "add items to supermarket cart" is a real API or a search redirect: not verified, since the app wasn't installed.
- Whether the developer is the same person as UK LinkedIn's Sahal Adan.
