One invite code, one creator: how Cuddli sold AI love stories onto European Top Grossing charts
What it is An AI roleplay app: every character comes with an animated video background and voice acting, and you unlock romance story chapters as you chat. Users can also create and publish their own characters. It makes money by selling coins.
Why it's blowing up It recruited a batch of mid-size TikTok creators in fan fiction, otome and BookTok, each with a coin-giving invite code, to reach women who are willing to pay for romance storylines. The latest surge in downloads was mainly driven by a rating prompt that appeared with a new version.
CHow you could follow this Stop building yet another AI character chat. Take the "creator-exclusive code + both sides get in-app currency + small first top-up" acquisition playbook and apply it to your own virtual-currency app. If you really want to do AI stories, pick a language or fandom community your competitors haven't dug into and go after that.

Cuddli is an AI roleplay app built around cinematic romance stories. On the day of its Nov 5 update, its App Store rating count went up by 43 in a single day, and it appeared on entertainment Top Grossing charts in 17 countries. Looking closer, it isn't really a hit: it's small, and the category is already crowded. The part worth taking is its acquisition method: each mid-tier TikTok creator gets a personal invite code, and both sides receive coins when it's redeemed.
A Spanish-language creator and Hogwarts
In 2026 Oct 16, Mexican TikTok creator leslienatasha (770k followers) posted a video: "T/N makes friends at Hogwarts and is the chosen one." T/N is Spanish-language fandom slang for "tu nombre" (your name), meaning the reader inserts themselves as the protagonist. The video tagged Cuddli AI at the end and displayed a line of text: "Oro: W0bxt9", meaning enter this code to claim coins. The video got roughly 59k views (TikTok, 11-06). Back in Sep 23, she had already used the same code in a Draco Malfoy video, which got 29k views.
That same month, a string of similar videos went up:
- wondercoserr (146k followers) cosplayed Sylus from Love and Deepspace with the caption "SYLUS MY MAN", 98k views;
- velvet.venomx (43k followers) posted a BookTok-style couple skit whose caption opens with "Ad:" and reads "Use our code: NAL6Tr", 41k views;
- lizettemkp (408k followers), estefaniacmar and natiuvv posted Spanish-language videos, caramel.studyy made an English-learning creator version, and ggukiesjeon took the K-pop fan route ("TRY THIS BEFORE IT ENDS").
These creators are all fairly small, but their niches are tightly focused: fan fiction, otome games, BookTok romance novels, and fandom. The official TikTok account has only 4,393 followers, so the traffic comes mostly from these creators.
What it actually is
An AI character chat app wrapped in a visual novel shell. Each character card has an animated video background, characters speak aloud, and as you chat you can "unlock chapters" and branch to different endings. At any point you can generate an image of the current scene. Characters can be official or created and published by users. The most popular user-made character on the website, "Jax", has 58.7k conversations (cuddli.ai).
The store listing says 17+, the interface is English-only, and the app is free to download. It makes money by selling coins: chatting, image generation, voice and unlocks all cost coins.
It's not a new face either. The Android version launched back in 2026 June under the package name ai.layla.chat. It was called "Layla AI: Chat with Characters" and then "Layla AI World: Make your Loop" before the third rename to Cuddli and the "romance RPG story" positioning. It reached iPhone in Aug 5. The iPhone version's developer is listed as a Hong Kong company, LUDO HK LIMITED, but the support email uses the domain of DalaPlay, the Android developer, so it's the same team.
Why it looks like it's growing lately
A cold splash of water first: the numbers are small.
| Metric | Sources | |
|---|---|---|
| iPhone ratings (combined across tracked countries) | 10-28 total → 119 total... 11-06 250 | App Store,11-06 |
| US store ratings | 85 ratings, 4.96 stars | App Store,11-06 |
| Android installs | 62.7k (10-29) → 85.3k (11-06), over 11.8k in a week | Google Play,11-06 |
| Top Grossing | All on entertainment category charts: #28 Luxembourg, #60 Czechia, #75 Sweden, #86 UK, #94 France, #138 Germany | App Store,11-06 |
The 5 new ratings in Nov 43 landed the same day as the 1.6.0 release. On Android, ratings jumped by 4 on Nov 159 alone. Before that, France, the UK, Italy and Germany were each adding only 0 to 3 new ratings a day, and on release day they each went up by 6 to 9. Almost all the new ratings are five stars. Inference: the new version added a rating prompt, or they're running a "rate for coins" promotion. It's not that users suddenly flooded in.
Entertainment Top Grossing charts in small European countries have a low bar; selling a modest number of coins is enough to get on them. Monthly revenue is estimated at under tens of thousands of dollars (unverified).
Three things are really driving the growth.
One code, two jobs. The creator's personal code is both a perk for new users (coins on redemption) and a tracking tool for Cuddli: it shows which creator brought how many people and how many payers, with no ad-attribution SDK needed. The official Instagram bio also carries a code. Reviews from the French store show how well this works: in Oct 18, one five-star review's title was simply "Code parrainage 1DT6tx" (referral code 1DT6tx); two other reviews also had nothing but a code as their title ("Ash: kDqnD8", "RwAEZ9"). Users themselves are spreading codes everywhere to get more coins.
Picking the right audience. The fan fiction, otome and BookTok crowd skews female, is already used to paying for romance storylines, and needs like "dating at Hogwarts" or "going on a date with Sylus" are not well served by text-only Character.AI. A US store review from Nov 3 says: "If you like slow-burn romance, this app is great. It doesn't rush things; the relationship builds up little by little."
Users create the content. The official homepage advertises "create characters, join votes, win up to 20,000 coins" and "100 coins for completing verification." The Android store listing also says creators can "build a following and earn from their work." Characters are written and promoted by users, so the company barely spends money producing content itself. On Reddit's r/ChaiAlternatives (a Chai-alternatives discussion board) there are posts like "I found a niche AI chat app and ended up becoming a creator," which read a lot like advertising (inference; the post bodies weren't opened).
No paid acquisition shows up in public ad records, but its top-grossing charts are in Europe while most creators pushing it are Spanish-speaking, and the two don't line up. So it's possible it's buying ads through other channels in Europe (unverified).
Where the money comes from
Selling coins. The first top-up has a discount: $1.49 buys 550 coins, a low entry point. Daily check-ins also hand out a few free coins to build the habit first.
Users' complaints are almost all about coins. UK store, Oct 20: "Lots of story, but the coins could be cheaper. If you spend freely, it gets expensive." Oct 13: "Really wish coins weren't so pricey." US store, Nov 2: "My only complaint is that you can't turn off auto image generation. I only want the story. I usually don't need the pictures, but they still cost coins, and I never asked for them." One French review in Nov 4 went the other way: "Too bad there's no ads you can watch to get coins."
Some people think it's a better deal than similar apps. UK store, Nov 2: "I've tried a few of these AI chat games and deleted most of them, because once the starting coins run out you have to subscribe, and it's too expensive. Cuddli is different: you can subscribe if you want, but it isn't that expensive."
Who it's competing with
This space is already crowded, and most competitors are about two orders of magnitude bigger:
| Name | Scale | How it differs from Cuddli |
|---|---|---|
| Character.AI | 70.7M Android installs | Mostly text chat, no video backgrounds or chapters |
| Talkie | 60.8M Android installs | Character cards plus card collecting, much bigger in scale |
| PolyBuzz | 57.9M Android installs, 247 ads running on Meta | Relies on large-scale paid acquisition |
| Chai | 24.4M Android installs | Pure chat; Cuddli recruits from its "alternatives" communities |
| Linky AI | 23.7M Android installs | Also makes visualized characters, backed by a big company |
| EMOCHI World | iPhone 14k ratings, +4,800 in a week | Launched in 2026 March, growing about 50 times as fast as Cuddli |
| Swerve | iPhone 37.7k ratings | Same category, running faster |
| Cuddler(HAKKO AI) | 72 Android reviews | Almost identical name and positioning, leaning more toward AI-made short dramas |
| Episodes, Chapters | Episode 2.81M ratings | Old-school romance choice stories with fixed plots |
(scale from the App Store and Google Play, 11-06)
"Video background + voiceover + chapters" is already standard by 2026. Cuddler, Viyo, EMOCHI and Linky are all doing it. There's even one on TikTok called "Cuddmi" that also leads with AI romance and otome. The product itself doesn't separate anyone. Distribution does.
If it were you
The call (C): the playbook is worth stealing, the category isn't worth chasing. Cuddli's product is about the same as dozens of rivals, and it's small. What it gets right is the low-cost, self-attributing acquisition setup: "mid-size creators + exclusive coin codes." That setup works in other categories too.
Who it's for: teams that already have an app monetized through virtual currency (stories, companionship, outfits, fortune-telling) and lack a cheap cold-start method. Or teams that know a specific fandom well and speak the local language.
Who it's not for: solo indie devs who want to build yet another AI character chat app head-on. Model and image-generation costs are real, content moderation with 17+ rules can get you flagged at any time, and rivals are buying installs while chasing C.AI-level retention. If you build it, you'll most likely be number 51.
How to do it: don't copy the product, copy the mechanics. Design the in-app currency first: compress the first top-up to $1–2, and give a small daily check-in bonus. Give each partner creator an exclusive code. When someone enters it, both sides get currency. The backend tracks how much paying revenue each creator brings: scale up the good ones, cut the weak ones. If you do AI stories, pick a language or community rivals haven't worked deeply, like the Spanish-language fandom, and grow the characters out of that community's in-jokes instead of building a generic "chat with any character" app.
How to acquire users: find fandom, otome, BookTok and fan-culture creators with 10k to 500k followers. The videos themselves are story clips ("T/N at Hogwarts"), with the code at the end. Add in-app creation contests that pay out currency, so users who write characters promote them and create content for you.
When to move: this playbook doesn't have a deadline and can be used any time. But if what you want to build is AI romance stories, the window is closing. New similar apps launch every month in 2026, and a year from now, hiring fandom creators on TikTok will only cost more.
Signs you've misread it: ① Cuddli's iPhone ratings keep coming in at 20+ a day even on days with no new version and no promotions, and Android installs grow from over 10k a week to over 50k. That would mean the product retains people beyond the codes, and the category has more room than it looks. ② It breaks into the top 30 of entertainment grossing charts in the UK, France and Germany. That would mean small coin purchases can really support meaningful revenue with that audience. ③ The opposite: if creator videos stop over the next month or two and rating growth stops with them, it's running on paid acquisition alone, and when the codes stop, the users stop.
One last line for product builders: the most worth-noting thing about Cuddli isn't "cinematic AI romance." It's one invite code doing three jobs at once: giving new users a small perk, giving creators a reason to promote, and telling you which creator's spend is paying off. That works for any app selling virtual currency.

Cuddli 是一款 AI 角色扮演 / 互动恋爱故事 App(角色卡带动态视频背景、配音、分支剧情、场景生图、用户可创建并发布角色),主打 BookTok 式恋爱套路。
1. Basic data
- iOS: LUDO HK LIMITED. The developer account has only these 1 apps. Released 2026-08-05, current version 1.6.0 (released 2026-11-05), rated 17+/18+, English interface only, free with in-app purchases (iTunes lookup).
- Ratings: the countries our database tracks total 250 (10-28 for 119,11-05 single-day +43,11-06 +25); beyond that, US 85 ratings 4.96, FR 70, DE 27, MX 7, and the other Latin American countries 1–2 each (iTunes lookup 2026-11-06).
- Charts: 17 countries charted in the entertainment category, almost all in the entertainment grossing chart, at ranks from #28 (Luxembourg) to #173: CZ #60, SE #75, BE #76, GB #86, FR #94, IT #108, DE #138 (appstore library app_profile). All of these are low-barrier small-country category charts, so revenue scale should be modest (estimated under $30K a month, unverified).
- How the ratings grew: in the four countries FR/GB/IT/DE, ratings came in at 0–3 a day from 10-28 to 11-04, with 11-05 each up +6 to +9, on the same day as the 1.6.0 release. That suggests the new version triggered the rating prompt, or there was a campaign rewarding coins for tasks (inferred, unverified). Ratings of 4.87–4.99 are also high, which fits a pattern of guided five-star reviews (inferred, unverified).
- Android (googleplay library): ai.layla.chat, developer DalaPlay, launched 2026-06-05. Installs 62,654 (10-29) → 85,336 (11-06), up +11,807 in the last 7 days; ratings 501 → 865,11-04, +159 in a single day. The store page shows 50K+ and 4.9 stars. AppInsider estimates a combined "1k+ downloads a day" across both platforms.
- The Android version was renamed: Layla AI: Chat with Characters (1.1.0,100+ downloads) → Layla AI World: Make your Loop (17+) → Cuddli AI: Romance RPG Stories (AppBrain / APKPure history). This suggests the team first built a general AI companion chat, then pivoted to "romance RPG stories" before launching on iOS.
2. Competitors

3. Growth tactics (evidence)
- TikTok paid creators + referral codes (confirmed, main channel). Searching TikHub for "cuddli/cuddliai" turns up a batch of creator videos from 2026-09 to November, all tagged @Cuddli AI and #cuddliai #cuddle #roleplay, each with its own "gold code":
- leslienatasha (774k followers, Spanish, Harry Potter / Draco fan content): several posts, top one 61k views, code W0bxt9;
- lizettemkp (408k followers, Spanish): "Utiliza mi código sN7H45";
- estefaniacmar (295k followers, Spanish BookTok); natiuvv (39k followers, code ZBGQYO);
- caramel.studyy (240k followers, English studytok), wondercoserr (146k followers, cosplay of Sylus from Love and Deepspace, 98k views), velvet.venomx (43k followers, caption literally says "Ad:", 41k views), ggukiesjeon (75k followers, K-pop "delulu"). The official Instagram bio also carries "use my code lsXWUg for free gold." The play is: find mid-tier otome / fanfic / BookTok creators, give each one an invite code, and both sides get gold. The official TikTok @cuddliai has only 4,393 followers and 41 videos, so the volume is almost entirely creator-driven.
- Reddit community seeding (likely self-posted): r/ChaiAlternatives has posts like "I found a small AI chat app — and somehow became a creator" and "Found a character on Cuddli AI that actually makes me want to keep coming back", which read like advertorials (only search snippets were visible, the body was blocked by Reddit, not verified).
- Creator incentives / in-app events (confirmed): the homepage of cuddli.ai advertises "submit for verification to get 100 gold," "create and vote to win up to 20,000 Ruby/gold," and a first-top-up special of "$1.49 for 550 gold." The Play listing says "publish your characters… grow your fanbase, and monetize your creations," and supports custom HTML/CSS/JS. There's a Discord. The most popular character card on the site (a Jax made by user @Daniela) has 58.7k chats.
- Paid acquisition: not in our data. tiktokads (EU coverage only), metaads and googleads return nothing for Cuddli / LUDO HK / DalaPlay. But the iOS and Android charts are almost all in Europe (FR, IT, SE, NL, GB, CZ, ES), which doesn't match the Spanish and English creator footprint. So it's possible they bought ads on networks we don't track, or geo-targeted in Europe (unverified).
- Rating prompts / rating farming (inferred): On the day of the iOS 11-05 release, the Android 11-04 ratings jumped at the same time, and nearly all the new ratings are five stars.
4. Why it took off
- Where the money comes from: gold in-app purchases (small first top-ups like $1.49 for 550 gold) that unlock image generation, voice, and chapters. Users are concentrated in romance and fanfic, where willingness to pay is high. Entertainment bestseller charts in small European countries have a low bar, so modest revenue can get you charted.
- Where users come from: paid creators plus invite codes that give gold, targeting otome / BookTok / fanfic communities (Draco, Sylus, K-pop), and mining users from c.ai / Chai alternative communities.
- Why people stay: user-created characters, creation contests and leaderboards (a UGC flywheel), plus "gamified" touches like video backgrounds, voice, and chapter unlocks. That makes it feel more like a game you can keep playing than plain text chat.
- Read the scale with a discount: iOS has only a few hundred ratings total, Android has 85k installs, and it adds about 12k a week. Compared with EMOCHI, Swerve, or PolyBuzz it's small. The "scaling" comes mainly from release-day rating prompts, not a true breakout.
5. Differentiation
Against text-chat apps like c.ai and Chai: a cinematic presentation, with character cards that have animated video backgrounds, a visual-novel interface, voice, scene image generation, and chapter/ending branches. Against fixed-plot choice stories like Episode and Chapters: the plot is AI-generated, so you can chat freely, and users create the content. But these features have been table stakes for 2026 years. Cuddler, Viyo, EMOCHI, Linky, and Talkie all make videoized or visualized characters. So differentiation is not the main reason it took off. What actually worked is the creator distribution plus invite-code playbook, aimed precisely at the "romance RPG / BookTok" niche where willingness to pay is high.
6. Visibility and copycats
- Visibility: no public revenue, no coverage from media or big X accounts (x-radar returned 0 results for "cuddli" over the past 60 days). It only shows up on auto-generated pages at data sites like AppInsider and AppBrain, plus TikTok creator promo videos. → Hardly anyone knows about it yet.
- Copycats: Cuddler (HAKKO AI), with the same name and positioning, appeared at about the same time. But we can't tell whether it's copying or being copied. No clear copycat found.
7. Takeaways
- Early on, don't scale with paid ads. Start with mid-tier creators in TikTok's fanfic / BookTok / otome circles, using "creator-exclusive invite codes that give in-app currency." One code handles attribution and acquisition incentives at once.
- Test the name and positioning on Android first (Layla → Cuddli), then go to iOS once it works.
- Let users create characters and pay out currency through creation contests, so content supply and retention don't cost you money.
- Small first top-ups ($1.49) plus small European countries' category bestseller charts, where the bar is low.
8. Uncertain
- Whether LUDO HK LIMITED (iOS), DalaPlay (Android), and GIRLPOWER HK LIMITED (which makes the Layla voice chat room, package com.layla.chat, 8.28M Android installs) are the same group. The package names are very similar, but this is unverified.
- Real revenue and retention; why Europe is the main battlefield (whether there's paid acquisition we haven't tracked).
- Whether the Reddit posts were self-published by the official team; whether creators are paid partners or just take a commission code (velvet.venomx wrote "Ad:", so at least some are paid).
