A study app carried by 36 student creators: can Indonesia's Pintarly playbook be copied?

What it is An AI study app in Indonesian: lecture notes, recordings, and YouTube turned into notes and quizzes automatically, plus a question bank and free mock exams for Indonesia's university entrance, academic aptitude, and civil service tests.

Why it took off It turned student study creators into part-time jobs. Dozens of people each post 5–7 talking-head videos a week, adding up to over 150M views. Add student ambassadors, affiliate commissions, and free mock exams, and the web version reached hundreds of thousands of users first.

BHow you could follow it Don't crowd into Indonesia. Take the "student creators as a job + free mock exams scored like the real test + affiliate referrals" model to another country with a national standardized exam that nobody is doing this for yet. Build the creator team a quarter before the next national exam.

Grade B: the playbook is clear and copyable, and exam calendars create steady demand. But Indonesia is already crowded (a copycat, aimasukptn, is moving faster), revenue looks modest, and moving to another country means building a local question bank and a dozen-plus creator team from scratch. Four computer science students at an Indonesian university built an AI study app that turns lecture notes into study material and does university entrance mock exams. In 10 months they say they reached 1M users. Users didn't come from the App Store. They came from 36 student TikTok creators paid per post. The product itself is easy to copy. What's hard to copy is the content team. Indonesia is already saturated, so the interesting part is taking this playbook to other countries and other exams.

A "if I could do it again" video

In 2026 June 28, the TikTok account rafa.belajar posted a video titled: "If I could be a freshman again, the first website I'd bookmark is @Pintarly," followed by "save this video, you'll get it once you're in college." By November 6 it had 320k views and nearly 40k likes.

rafa isn't a random user. On Pintarly's About Us page, he's listed under "Content Creators" along with Anastasha, Abigail, Salskie, Aqil and others, 36 people in total, with the title Marketing Partner. Their account names follow the same pattern: studywith_xxx, xxx_studies, xxxbelajar (belajar means "to study"). Titles all shout a pain point in caps, like "24 hours is nowhere near enough for college students" or "GPT and Claude keep hitting limits," and every caption ends with "@Pintarly | Partner AI SNBT."

What it is

Pintarly is an AI study tool in Indonesian with two tracks:

  • For college students: upload lecture notes, PDFs, recordings or YouTube links to auto-generate summaries, quizzes and flashcards, plus explainer videos and podcasts for midterms and finals.
  • For high school students: question banks and mock exams for Indonesia's university entrance UTBK/SNBT, the national academic aptitude test TKA (taken from elementary through high school), and the civil service CPNS exam. Mock exams are scored with IRT, so they produce scores like the real test. The AI tutor, Aily, is available 24 hours a day.

The timeline comes from the official site: first line of code in 18 Dec 2025, web version launched in 15 Jan 2026, 500k users in May 20, 1M in November. The iOS app didn't go live until Aug 10 2026. The team has 45 people, 36 of them content creators.

Did it really take off?

Depends which number you look at (as of 11-06):

SourceMetric
Users claimed on the official site1M+ (the careers page says 700k)
Google Play installsAbout 194k, +7 day +8,949; #10 in Indonesia's education bestseller chart
iOS ratings469,7 day +31; Indonesia education bestseller chart ranked 10-28 to 11-06, at #9–17

The app-side numbers are far from "1M," so most users are presumably on the web, which is what the creators' videos keep pointing to ("use this website"). On Nov 4 iOS ratings rose by 17 in one day (normally one or two), and that day was the deadline for the first batch of ambassador "first videos." Ambassadors probably posted together that day (inferred).

App Store reviews are enthusiastic but not very rigorous: 11-02 has a 5-star review that says "after the update it won't open, and once the Pintarly screen appears it's just white."

Where users come from: turning study influencers into a job

Pintarly's careers page is blunt: most new users found us through creators' videos, not ads. Rather than hiring influencers for one-off placements, it turned them into a part-time role:

  • Marketing Partner: hires students aged 16–24 to post 5–7 talking-head videos a week, with a senior creator as coach. No working for other study apps at the same time. Pay is IDR 1M–10M a month (about $60–600), rising with views and seniority. The official figures: 14 people posted 3,131 videos, 155M views, 33 videos past a million. A later ambassador page cites 190M+ cumulative views.
  • Student Ambassador: the first batch ran from October 2026 to April 2027. Reportedly 200 people were picked from over 3,000 applicants, each submitting 1 videos a week. Rewards were memberships, certificates, recommendation letters and referral commissions, with strong performers converted to Marketing Partners. In short, it's an unpaid top-of-funnel.
  • Referral commission: referrers earn 5–12% of the first purchase, capped at IDR 234k per sale. The referred friend gets 9% off. Refer a friend who pays and you get a free membership. The case study talks about sharing into tutoring-class WhatsApp groups.
  • Free mock exams for SEO: 50 free SNBT mock exams broken into landing pages. Indonesian news site detik listed it among its "free UTBK mock exam links."

The official account @pintarly.id itself has only 5,700 followers. The traffic came from dozens of individual accounts, which is why it's hard to see and hard to copy.

Where the money comes from

The free plan gives you 1,000 questions and a limited AI quota; paid unlocks the 30k+ question bank, unlimited Aily questions, live instructor classes, and a WhatsApp sprint group. Pricing (official site 11-06):

PlanPricing
PRO, 12 monthsIDR 349k (about $21), with a struck-through "original price" of IDR 4M on the page
PRO, 6 months299k
Max, 12 months (unlimited AI)2M
Max group buy for 5 peopleIDR 995k, or IDR 199k each

$21 a year, an order of magnitude cheaper than offline tutoring. Revenue isn't public. The only signal is iOS ranking #9–#17 in Indonesia's Education Top Grossing chart. That chart has a low bar, so absolute revenue is probably modest (inference).

Pelajarin.aiScale unverifiedAlso turns uploaded material into notes / flashcards, but has no local exam question bank
NotebookLM, Quizlet, GauthBig-company, free or globalNo understanding of Indonesian exams, no local question bank or community

The one to watch is aimasukptn: launched the same year, same playbook, and one line fewer product, so it moves faster. It shows that distribution decides the outcome. "AI notes + local exams" is just the combination that keeps people who got into university.

If it were you

Verdict: don't crowd into Indonesia. What's worth taking is the whole package: student creators as a job + free mock exams + referral commissions. Move it to another market with national standardized exams, lots of TikTok students, and no one doing this yet.

Who it fits: small teams that understand one country's exam system and can recruit local university students. People who have built question banks or tutoring content have an edge.

Who it doesn't fit: anyone who only wants a generic "upload a PDF, get flashcards" tool. NotebookLM is free, so that line can't stand alone. It's also a poor fit for anyone who doesn't want to manage people, because half this business is running a dozens-strong part-time content team.

How to do it: pick one exam (a country's college entrance or civil service exam). Launch free mock exams scored against the real test as the hook, then use AI notes as the second line to keep the people who got in. Price at a fraction of tutoring-class fees.

How to get users: copy the structure. Publicly recruit student creators aged 16–24, with base pay plus view bonuses, a fixed weekly quota and exclusivity. Then run an ambassador program that pays in certificates and memberships to build the funnel. Set referral commissions around 10% of the first purchase plus "refer one, get a free membership." Launch the website first, the app later.

When to start: exams follow a calendar, so content has to build up before registration season. Take SNBT as an example: it's usually held in spring (around 4–May), and cram-content traffic peaks in the months before the exam. In another country, you need the creator team in place at least a quarter before the next national exam.

Signs you got it wrong: two or three months after the creator team is running, individual videos routinely fail to reach tens of thousands of views, or conversions depend entirely on the memberships you hand out. Or the target market already has two or three apps running the same student-creator matrix. That's Indonesia today, and it's crowded.

One line

An AI study and exam-prep app built by computer science students at Universitas Indonesia. Upload lecture slides, recordings or YouTube videos and it turns them into notes, quizzes, flashcards and podcasts. On top of that it adds question banks and free tryouts (mock exams) for UTBK/SNBT (college entrance), TKA (academic aptitude test) and CPNS (civil service exam), with an AI tutor called Aily.

Verdict

It didn't get here through the App Store. The web version launched first in 2026-01-15, the Play version ran first, and the iOS version didn't list until 2026-08-10. Users came almost entirely from TikTok and Instagram. The company ran a matrix of 14→36 student creators aged 16–24 doing talking-head study videos (accounts named studywith_xxx / xxx_studies / xxxbelajar), each posting 5–7 a week, paid IDR 1M–10M a month based on views. The official claim is 155M–190M cumulative views, 33 videos past a million, and "most new users come from creator videos rather than ads." On top of that sit a 6-month Student Ambassador program (200 people picked from 3000+ applicants) and 5–12% referral commissions. Monetization is a question bank and AI quota behind a free tier, with annual Pro at just IDR 349k. It ranks #9–#17 on Indonesia's iOS Education Top Grossing chart.

  • Most of the user count is web users. TikTok videos keep saying "pake website"; Play installs are under 200k and iOS ratings under 500.
  • 11-04 iOS ratings jumped suddenly, right when the first Student Ambassador batch's "first reel due date" (11-04) and the 10-29 kickoff landed. Likely driven by ambassadors posting in bulk (inference, unverified).
  • Rating quality looks loose: a recent 5-star review actually says "won't open after update, white screen" (in the data card).

3. Growth tactics

  1. In-house TikTok / IG creator matrix (confirmed, the main channel): the careers page says it plainly: "most of them find us through a creator's video rather than an ad". The Marketing Partner role requires age 16–24, 5–7 talking-head videos a week, and no working for other study apps at the same time. Pay is IDR 1M–10M a month, rising with views and tenure. Official numbers: 14 people, 3,131 videos, 155M views, 33 videos past one million; the ambassador page says 190M+ cumulative. The About Us page lists 36 Marketing Partners (Anastasha, Abigail, Salskie, Rafa, Nayla, etc.), and they match accounts on TikTok: anastashaa_studies (one 144k-view video), studywith_abigail, salskiebelajar, rafa.belajar (one 200k), belajar_nayla (one 34k), vianca_studies (one 383k). The copy follows one template: all-caps titles that yell a pain point ("KALAU NILAI LO JELEK", "GPT CLAUDE KERJAANNYA LIMIT MULU") ending with "pake @Pintarly | Partner AI SNBT". The official account @pintarly.id has only 5,722 followers, 241 videos and 290k likes on TikTok (TikHub); the volume comes from these individual accounts spreading the load.
  2. Student Ambassador (confirmed): Batch 1 runs 2026-10 to 2027-04,6 months, submitting 1 reels a week. Rewards are Premium, certificates, recommendation letters, commissions, and top performers convert to Marketing Partners. One IG post says it was "200 picked from 3000+ people".
  3. Commissions / referrals (confirmed): affiliate commission of 5–12%, up to IDR 234k per sale, first purchase only; invited friends get 9% off (up to IDR 50k); referring the first paying friend gives you Premium free. Case studies mention "posted in tutoring WA groups" and "recommended by UTBK group admins", i.e., spreading through WhatsApp groups.
  4. Free tryouts + SEO + media coverage (confirmed): 50 free SNBT tryouts, scored with IRT; the question bank is split into SEO landing pages by 7 subtests (/tryout, /latihan, /persiapan-utbk). detik listed Pintarly in its "free UTBK tryout links" roundup.
  5. ASO (confirmed): the app name is stuffed with keywords: Catatan / TKA / SNBT (on Play it's Kuliah / TKA / SNBT).
  6. Paid ads: no evidence found. The official line is that it doesn't rely on ads; our ad library only tracks listed products, and we didn't check.

4. Why it charted

  • A content factory, not one-off creator hunts: it turns TikTok "study influencers" into a company role, with weekly quotas and senior creators mentoring them. Cost is controllable (dozens of people × IDR 1M–10M a month), and the volume is sustained.
  • Timing: TKA is a national academic ability test introduced in the last couple of years, covering SD/SMP/SMA. Add the annual SNBT and the UAS/UTS midterm and final exam seasons, and demand arrives every year at fixed points (the TKA launch timing hasn't been checked in detail). The product expanded from SNBT to TKA, Mandiri (university self-admission), and CPNS, and each new exam brings another batch of users.
  • The free hook runs deep: 50 free tryouts, 1,000 free questions, and free AI notes to start. The paywall sits on "30k+ question bank, unlimited AI, live classes, WA sprint groups". Annual pricing is IDR 349k (about US$21), an order of magnitude cheaper than offline tutoring; the page also shows a struck-through IDR 4M original price as an anchor.
  • One app from junior high to university: high schoolers use it to prep for exams; after getting into university, "lecture / recording to notes" stays useful (UTS/UAS). The user lifecycle is stretched, and creator content can speak to both groups at once.

5. Differentiation

  • Compared with pure question-bank / mock-exam apps (aimasukptn, Analitica, Pahamify): it adds NotebookLM-style "material to notes / quizzes / podcasts / videos", so college students can use it too.
  • Compared with AI note apps (Pelajarin, NotebookLM, Quizlet): it adds local exam question banks, IRT mock exams, leaderboards, and levels.
  • The "AI notes + local exams" combo is rare, but it isn't the main reason it took off. The closest comparison is aimasukptn: launched the same year, no notes line, same TikTok talking-head playbook, yet it grew several times faster than Pintarly. What decided the outcome is distribution (the creator matrix + ambassadors + commissions); the differentiation mainly helps it cover college students and stretch the lifecycle.

6. Visibility and copycats

  • Revenue isn't public (no TrustMRR, founders haven't posted it). Nothing on X (x-radar finds 0 posts in the last 90 days). Media coverage is only detik's "free tryout list". It's well known in Indonesian student circles, and almost unknown outside them.
  • The space was already crowded, so no one is specifically copying it. aimasukptn and Bisadanedu use the same "study influencer TikTok talking-head" playbook, and they are bigger or faster.

7. Takeaways

  • Turn creator buying into a "part-time creator" job: publish the pay range, fixed weekly video counts, weekly mentoring, and exclusivity clauses. Use ambassadors (certificates, recommendation letters) as a cheap top-of-funnel, and convert the top performers.
  • Commission design: first-sale commission + invitee discount + free Premium for referring the first paying friend. Works well for cold start.
  • Put free mock exams on SEO landing pages to earn inclusion in media "free tryout lists".
  • Keep adding exam categories at the seasonal peaks (TKA, CPNS, Mandiri). Each one is a new wave of traffic.

8. Uncertain

  • "1M users" is what the company itself says, and the basis is unclear; the careers page says 700k. How much comes from web, Play, or iOS is unknown.
  • Conversion rate and real revenue: all we know is it charts #9–17 on iOS Top Grossing. The bar for Indonesia's education Top Grossing is low, so the absolute amount is probably not large.
  • Whether it runs Meta / TikTok ads: not checked; the company says it mainly doesn't rely on ads.
  • Whether it has external funding: not checked.
  • Whether the 11-04 rating jump came from ambassadors: only an inference.
