# 150 ratings into the Philippines Top Grossing top 10: how a Cal AI clone grew in a market nobody was watching

**What it is** A subscription app that identifies food from photos and calculates calories and macronutrients. It is nearly identical to Cal AI, with store names in a dozen-plus languages.

**Why it took off** Cal AI isn't pushing in countries like Southeast Asia and the Nordics, where the category chart needs only one or two hundred ratings to reach the top 10. A studio that had already made a fitness subscription work brought over the same quiz, paywall, and paid acquisition, and it climbed the charts.

**D** 30 **How you could follow it** Skip calories and take the method for picking markets: choose a subscription category validated in the US whose leaders haven't localized, go to countries with a low Top Grossing bar, start with local-language store names, and add Meta ads plus a long quiz and paywall.

Follow score 30: the calorie category in these markets is already crowded with a dozen clones, several run by studios that buy ads. Appy Pie is publicly using it as material for "build a clone in one sentence." Calife itself relies on the studio's ready-made templates and ad spend, with no product edge to follow. What you can borrow is the market-selection method. It's talked about in a small circle

Calife is a subscription app that calculates calories from photos. Its features are nearly identical to Cal AI. It launched just four months ago, and in November 6 it ranked #8 in the Health & Fitness Top Grossing charts in the Philippines and Vietnam. It has only 150 ratings in the Philippines. The developer is a Chinese-linked studio that already has a hit fitness app. It got traction not from the product but from market selection: in countries the leaders aren't serving, the chart bar is low enough that a hundred or two hundred ratings is enough. Below: what it is, why it ranked, where the money comes from, who's competing, and whether you should follow it.

### A chart in the Philippines

In 2026 Nov 6, the Philippines App Store's top 12 Health & Fitness Top Grossing apps included 6 AI photo calorie-counting apps: #3 was the veteran MyFitnessPal (37k ratings), #4 FoodPilot had only 118 ratings, #5 Bitalyze was launched in June by a solo Filipino developer, followed by WiseMeal, Calife, and Appediet. Calife ranked #8, sandwiched between the workout logger Hevy and the veteran Lose It!.

The Vietnam chart is even crazier: #1 FoodPilot has only 76 ratings. Calife also ranks #8,111 with just as few.

On the same day, the category original Cal AI had 370k ratings in the US, yet on the Philippines chart it ranked only #16, Vietnam #39, Thailand #37, and Indonesia #98. In those countries it had barely gained a new rating in the last 7 days.

In October 29, no-code site builder Appy Pie posted on X: "Calife, an AI calorie logging app, is estimated at 50k+ downloads a month. We built a clone in Appy Pie with one prompt." So people who run a "copy the hit" business have already noticed it.

### What it is

Opening Calife, you first get a long quiz: goal, motivation, gender, age, height, weight, target weight, activity level, meals per day, first and last meal times, water intake, whether you eat salty snacks or fast food... Interspersed are screens like "Calife vs. not using it weight-loss curve," "60M+ foods scanned," and "Ready to get healthy? YES / NO." After about 40 screens you get a personalized weight-loss curve, and the next screen is the paywall: a weekly subscription with a free trial, or an annual subscription with a one-week trial (the full flow ScreensDesign recorded, 131 screens).

After paying, there are three features: photo recognition of food for calories and the three macronutrients, barcode and nutrition-label scanning, and manual logging. US pricing is $6.99 weekly and $39.99 annually, with a discounted annual tier at $19.99 (US store page).

Each store is named per country: Spanish-speaking "Cuenta Calorías IA", Portuguese "Contador Calorias AI", Swedish "AI kaloriräknare", Dutch "AI Calorietracker", Traditional Chinese "AI 食物卡路里計算器". The store name is the keyword: users searching for "calorie counting" in their local language can find it.

### Who made it

The seller on the App Store is Singapore company FOYATECH PTE. LTD. (registered in 2023 May), developer account Core AI, with 7 apps: ChillFit home fitness, Gymax muscle building, SPcard star card scanning, HoloSnap card scanning, Prompa teleprompter, ScanAny PDF scanning, plus Calife. All are hot niches from the past year, with one or two launched per quarter. The ttsdtech.com site lists "Hangzhou Toutoudao Technology Co., Ltd." and claims 50M+ total downloads (self-reported, unverified).

ChillFit, the one they've already made work: 3,053 ratings in the US store, third-party estimates of about $400k monthly revenue (ScreensDesign; AppGazers estimates $90k–$710k, a wide gap). Calife's onboarding quiz, paywall, and weekly-plus-annual subscription combo follow the same playbook as ChillFit. Inference: Calife moved the same template and ad accounts into the "AI calorie" niche.

### How big it is now

| What to look at | Metric | Sources |
|---|---|---|
| Health & Fitness Top Grossing | Philippines #8 (11-01 peak #5), Vietnam #8 (11-01 peak #6), Denmark #18, Indonesia #20, Thailand #21, Poland #25 | App Store charts, 11-06 |
| Score | About 1,545 ratings across all countries; US 183 ratings, average 4.7 | App Store,11-06 |
| Growth | Across all countries, 14–48 new ratings per day, about 146 over the past 7 days | App Store, 10-29 to 11-06 |
| Countries charted | 10-28 of 48 → 11-06 of 34 | App Store charts |
| Revenue | Third-party estimates range from under $5K/month (AppGazers) and $15k (ScreensDesign) to "$100k MRR" (Peekly) | Store pages, November |

The growth curve is flat, with no breakout. It looks more like a steady ad budget propping up volume, and the number of charted countries is still falling. The third-party estimates differ by 20×; the more credible range is tens of thousands of downloads a month and a few thousand to tens of thousands of dollars in revenue (est.). "Top Grossing #8" sounds impressive, but converted to money it's not much: category charts in these countries have low bars to clear.

### Where users come from

**Paid acquisition, most likely.** Peekly shows it running 7 ads on Meta across 5 countries (November). The app pops Apple's "Allow Tracking" prompt in the first few screens, the standard setup for attribution on paid ads. Searching "Calife" on TikTok returns only California and Gacha Life; nobody is discussing it on X or Reddit, so organic word of mouth is essentially zero.

**Localized store names.** They capture search traffic in smaller-language stores; in the Spanish and Argentine stores it appears alongside Calo, SnapCal, and FoodPilot under "customers also bought."

**Nudging for good reviews.** The reply template devs use on 5-star reviews: "If you feel our app is worthy of a 5-star rating, we would greatly appreciate it!" Part of the 4.7 average comes from this.

### Where the money comes from, and what it costs

Money comes from the paywall: a 40-screen quiz gets users invested, then a free trial starts, and the weekly or annual fee auto-charges when it ends. The most common praise in reviews is that it's cheap. A US user wrote on Oct 15: "Way cheaper than My Fitness Pal and other similar apps!!!"

The costs show up in reviews too. US, Jul 31: "They make it deliberately hard to cancel, and still charge you!" Taiwan, Nov 2, one star: "I never subscribed but was charged... please refund." Recognition accuracy is also criticized: a US user photographed chicken burritos with cheese cauliflower, and "the AI decided I ate scrambled eggs," and she spent 20 minutes without getting it logged. The developer replied telling her to "use good lighting and center the food in the frame."

### Who it's competing with

| Competitors | Scale (11-06) | How Calife differs from the others |
|---|---|---|
| Cal AI | US 370k ratings; Philippines Top Grossing #16, Vietnam #39 | The category prototype, aimed at the US and English speakers, built on TikTok creators; little push in Southeast Asia |
| MyFitnessPal / Lose It! / Lifesum / Yazio | Top 20 grossing regulars across countries; MyFitnessPal #3 in the Philippines | Long-established food database, added photo logging later; pricier |
| FoodPilot (Hong Kong, Radiant) | Vietnam Top Grossing #1 (76 ratings), Philippines #4 | Same playbook, entered about a year and a half earlier than Calife |
| Nutree (Vietnamese) | Vietnam Top Grossing #6,4,295 review score | Local team, local food database |
| Gizi AI (Indonesian, homegrown) | Indonesia Top Grossing #8,161 rating | Local team, built for Indonesian diets; 2026-09 just launched |
| Bitalyze, WiseMeal, Appediet, CalSnap, Calz, and others | Top 12 in the Philippines and Vietnam charts | Copycat competition |
| ChatGPT / Gemini photo calorie questions | General | No logging, goals, or reminders |

In one line: this category is already crowded. Calife has nothing different in the product; the difference is only which countries it went into, what names it used, and who is behind the ad spend.

### If it were you

**Verdict:** Don't copy Calife, and don't build another "AI photo calorie counter." This business already has more than a dozen clones in Southeast Asia, several backed by studios that churn out apps in bulk and buy ads, and Appy Pie is still teaching everyone to "build one with a single prompt." What's actually worth taking is its market-selection method.

**Who it suits:** People who already have a subscription app working in the US (or know a US subscription niche well), who can run Meta ads and calculate trial-to-paid conversion, and who can make store pages and quizzes that read as though a local wrote them.

**Who it doesn't suit:** Anyone relying on organic traffic, TikTok virality, or ASO alone; anyone wanting to enter calorie tracking (you'd be competing on price with FoodPilot, Nutree, and the studios); anyone uneasy about aggressive subscription walls, since part of this model's revenue depends on them, and refunds and 1-star reviews come with it.

**How to do it:** Pick a subscription category that has been validated in the US but whose top spots haven't been localized yet, not necessarily calories. Check the category top-grossing charts in target countries first; if the #10 spot has only a hundred or two hundred ratings, the space is open. Name the store listing in each country's local language, build the onboarding quiz and paywall along the Cal AI route, and price a notch below the established players.

**How to acquire users:** Run Meta ads in Southeast Asia, Northern Europe, Eastern Europe, and Latin America, where ads are cheap and the big players aren't buying. Set up the tracking prompt from the start so you can prove the spend pays back.

**When it's too late:** The calorie window has already closed. The market-selection method still works, probably until the leading apps start localizing into every language, or sooner, once the studios in these countries reach a dozen or so.

**What would show you read it wrong:** If Calife drops out of the top 20 in the Philippines and Vietnam and the charted-country count keeps falling, that means the ad spend isn't covering itself, and the low bar in these markets is just because little money is going in. Conversely, if Cal AI starts localized spending in Southeast Asia and climbs back to the top 5 within weeks, the open space was being held by the leaders and will be taken back.

Competitors

| Name | Where | Launched | Scale | How it differs from this one |

| Cal AI | iOS | 2024-04 | US store 374,164 ratings; Philippines health & fitness #16, Vietnam #39 (appstore library 2026-11-06) | Cal AI is the category prototype, focused on the US and English markets. Calife turns the same product into a multilingual version and enters markets Cal AI isn't pushing. |
| MyFitnessPal / Lose It! / Lifesum / Yazio | iOS | 2008–2019 | Regulars in the top 20 of each store's grossing chart; MyFitnessPal Philippines grossing #3 | An established database-style logging tool with high prices. Calife only does photo recognition, and its $39.99 annual plan is cheaper. |
| FoodPilot(Hong Kong Radiant) | iOS | 2024-11 | Vietnam grossing #1 (76 ratings), Philippines #4 | A peer with the same approach that entered Southeast Asia earlier. Calife has no meaningful difference. |
| Calz(Wachanga) | iOS | 2024-12 | Vietnam 8,036 ratings, grossing #12; Indonesia #13 | Same category, more ratings, but lower grossing rank than Calife |
| Nutree | iOS | 2026-02 | Vietnam 4,295 ratings, grossing #6 | A local Vietnamese team with a local food database; Calife is one global template |
| Gizi AI(Nalar Intelligence) | iOS | 2026-09 | Indonesia Top Grossing #8,161 rating | An Indonesian local team; Calife ranks #20 in Indonesia |
| Bitalyze / WiseMeal / Appediet | iOS | 2023–2026 | Philippines grossing #5 / #6 / #10 | Same-pool competition with near-identical offerings |

Where users come from

- Inferred **Paid acquisition (Meta etc.)** : Peekly shows 7 Meta Ads running across 5 countries; the first onboarding screen is the ATT tracking permission prompt (ScreensDesign screenshots); it is not on our Meta / TikTok / Google ad library lists

- **Confirmed** **Studio reuse (old app templates and paid acquisition system)** : the same developer's ChillFit, under Core AI / FOYATECH, has a third-party estimated monthly revenue of about $400k; both apps are listed under the website ttsdtech.com and use the same subscription wall

- **Confirmed** **ASO / multilingual store names** : names changed per store: Cuenta Calorías IA, Contador Calorias AI, AI kaloriräknare, AI Calorietracker, AI 食物卡路里計算器, and more (appstore library app_profile)

- **Confirmed** **Guided ratings** : the developer replies to 5-star reviews asking users to give 5 stars (US store review page)

- Inferred **Organic content on TikTok / X / Reddit** : a TikHub search for Calife returns no related videos, x-radar shows 0 posts in 90 days, and there is no Reddit discussion

## Calife: AI Calorie Tracker (ios_6779546212): why it made the charts

> Research date 2026-11-06. App Store data comes from our appstore library (from 2026-10-28); other items are sourced where noted. Apple doesn't publish downloads or revenue, so third-party estimates are always marked "est."

### Bottom line

Calife isn't a new category. It is an **industrialized copy of the Cal AI model (photo calorie recognition + long onboarding questionnaire + subscription wall)** , from a China-linked fitness app studio that already has a hit (ChillFit, third-party estimated monthly revenue of about $400k). The studio runs under the Singapore shell FOYATECH PTE. LTD., developer account Core AI; its website states "Hangzhou Toutousidao Technology". It made the charts mainly in **non-English markets where Cal AI and other leaders have no localization and the chart thresholds are low** : the Philippines, Vietnam, Indonesia, Thailand, Denmark, and Poland. By rating counts, 100 ratings in these places can get an app into the top 10 of the health and fitness grossing chart. What actually made it work is the developer's resources (ready-made templates, paid acquisition, and localization capacity), not anything special about the product.

### 1. Basics

- Listed 2026-07-09; latest version 1.0.5 (2026-11-04); free to download, with in-app purchases including Premium Yearly $39.99 / $19.99 (discount tier) and Premium Weekly $6.99 (US store page).

- Seller FOYATECH PTE. LTD. (Singapore, UEN 202316847Z, registered 2023-05-02; sgpbusiness / companies.sg). Developer account name Core AI (id 1846552725), with 7 apps: ChillFit home fitness (2025-10, 3,053 US ratings), SPcard sports card scanning (2026-02), Gymax muscle building (2025-11), Calife (2026-07), HoloSnap TCG card scanning (2026-09), Prompa teleprompter (2026-09), ScanAny PDF scanning (2026-01). Clearly a studio that mass-produces apps for popular categories.

- The website ttsdtech.com is titled FOYATECH PTE LTD, the page says "Hangzhou Toutousidao Technology Co., Ltd.", and it claims "50M+ Total Downloads". That is a self-reported figure and has not been verified.

- Localization: store names were done separately by market, e.g. Spanish "Calife: Cuenta Calorías IA", Portuguese "Contador Calorias AI", Swedish "AI kaloriräknare", Dutch "AI Calorietracker", Italian, and Traditional Chinese "Calife：AI 食物卡路里計算器".

### 2. Data: where it is now and how fast

appstore library app_profile, 2026-11-06:

| Store | Best rank in health & fitness category | Score | New ratings in the last 7 days |
|---|---|---|---|
| Philippines ph | Grossing #8 (peak #11-01 ... best #5) | 150 | 28 |
| Vietnam vn | Grossing #8 (peak #11-01 ... best #6) | 111 | 24 |
| Denmark dk | Grossing #18 (Top Free reached #10-29 ... #6) | 65 | 2 |
| Indonesia id | Grossing #20 (10-30 #9) | 92 | 7 |
| Thailand th | Grossing #21 | 139 | 13 |
| Poland pl | Grossing #25 | 132 | 6 |
| Argentina / Costa Rica / Colombia | Grossing #30 / #36 / #38 | 25 / 10 / 12 | 6 / 1 / 1 |
| United States us | Not on the chart in our library | 183 (iTunes lookup, average rating 4.68) | — |

- Total across all stores: 14–48 new ratings per day, about 146 over the last 7 days (data card). Stores charting dropped from 48 on 10-28 to 34 on 11-06 (data card daily_all_countries). Growth isn't steep. It looks like steady paid spend, not a viral spike.

- **The bar is low** : Vietnam's #1 Health & Fitness Top Grossing app FoodPilot has only 76 ratings, and the Philippines' #4 FoodPilot has 118 (appstore library 2026-11-06). So Calife's "Top Grossing #8" doesn't mean big revenue.

- **Compared with Cal AI** (same day, same library): Cal AI has 374,164 ratings in the US store, but in the Philippines' Top Grossing category it ranks only #16, Vietnam #39, Thailand #37, Indonesia #98, Denmark #59. In the last 7 days it gained only 0–2 ratings in each of those stores. Cal AI is barely pushing in these markets, and Calife is filling that gap.

- Third-party estimates contradict each other: AppGazers puts 2026-10 revenue at under $5K and 2.07–110k downloads; ScreensDesign puts downloads at 210k and revenue at $15k; Peekly says "$100k MRR, 100k downloads/month". The reasonable read: tens of thousands of downloads a month, and revenue in the range of a few thousand to tens of thousands of dollars a month, nowhere near top-tier scale.

### 3. Competitors

| Name | Where | Launched | Scale (our library / source) | How Calife differs from it |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Cal AI(Viral Development LLC) | iOS/Android | 2024-04 | 374,164 US ratings; #8 Free in US Health & Fitness | The category original. Focused on the US and English markets, built on TikTok creators. Calife takes the same product into smaller-language and Southeast Asian markets it hasn't localized for. |
| MyFitnessPal / Lose It! / Lifesum / Yazio / Foodvisor | iOS/Android | 2008–2019 | Regular in the top 20 Top Grossing across stores; MyFitnessPal #3 in the Philippines | Long-standing database-style logging tool that later added AI photo logging. Calife only does photo logging and costs less per year ($39.99/yr; a US reviewer wrote "way cheaper than My Fitness Pal"). |
| FoodPilot(Hong Kong Radiant) | iOS | 2024-11 | Vietnam grossing #1 (76 ratings), Philippines #4 | A Hong Kong/mainland Chinese peer running the same playbook, started earlier, ranking higher in Southeast Asia |
| Calz(Wachanga) | iOS | 2024-12 | Vietnam 8,036 ratings, grossing #12; Indonesia #13 | Same category. More ratings, but lower Top Grossing rank than Calife. |
| Nutree (Vietnamese) | iOS | 2026-02 | Vietnam 4,295 ratings, grossing #6 | Local team, local food database. Calife is one global template. |
| Gizi AI (Nalar Intelligence, Indonesia) | iOS | 2026-09 | Indonesia Top Grossing #8,161 rating | Local team, built for Indonesian diets |
| Bitalyze (Philippine solo developer), WiseMeal, Appediet, Calo, Takoh, SnapCalorie | iOS | 2021–2026 | Top 20 in the Philippines and Thailand | Same-pool competition with near-identical offerings |
| ChatGPT / Gemini photo-to-calorie questions | Big-company features | From ¥2023 | General | No logging, goals, or reminders. Calife sells "logging + goals + subscription." |

Verdict: **this category is already crowded, and Calife has no product differentiation.**

### 4. Growth tactics (evidence)

- **Paid acquisition (likely, partly confirmed)** : Peekly's page lists Calife with "Meta Ads 7 active" and "5 countries targeted" (peekly.app, 2026-11). ScreensDesign's captured onboarding shows an ATT tracking-permission prompt on the first screen, a typical setup for ad attribution (screensdesign.com/apps/calife-ai-calorie-tracker). Our Meta, TikTok, and Google ad libraries don't list it or ChillFit. That doesn't mean it isn't advertising.

- **Studio reuse** : the same developer's ChillFit already made "fitness + subscription" work (ScreensDesign estimates $400k monthly revenue, AppGazers $93.5k–$714k). Calife looks like the same team, same onboarding and subscription wall, and same localization template, copied into the "AI calorie" niche, probably with the same acquisition accounts. This is inference.

- **ASO and localization** : local-language names and keywords per store, such as "Cuenta Calorías IA" and "kaloriräknare," which catch search traffic in smaller-language stores. It appears alongside Calo, CaloCare, SnapCal, and FoodPilot in the "customers also bought" section (see-all pages on apps.apple.com/ar and /es).

- **Prompted ratings** : the developer's replies to 5-star reviews say "If you feel our app is worthy of a 5-star rating, we would greatly appreciate it" (US review page). Average rating is 4.68, but there are 1-star Taiwan reviews saying "charged without subscribing" and US reviews saying "paid the annual fee, couldn't use it after a week" and "hard to cancel." The paywall is aggressive (weekly $6.99 plus annual), so part of the revenue comes from that design, and so does refund risk.

- **Content and creators** : searching "Calife" on TikHub returns only unrelated videos (California, Gacha Life); x-radar shows 0 posts in the last 90 days; no Reddit discussion. **No organic content spread found.**

### 5. How many people have seen it

- No press coverage, no big X accounts, no founder posts about revenue.

- App-intelligence sites (AppGazers, ScreensDesign, Peekly, AppGoblin, AppWinners, IndieTower) all index it. **Appy Pie (no-code site builder) uses it as marketing material** , posting on Facebook, X, and YouTube Shorts: "Calife is estimated at 50k+ downloads a month, and we built a clone in minutes with Calscope." So it has reached the "find a niche, copy the hit" crowd.

- So it counts as "talked about in a small circle." The selling point is the Southeast Asia and smaller-language play. The category itself has been a red ocean for a while.

### 6. Why it took off

1. **Copying a validated category** : Cal AI reached 370k US ratings in two years, proving photo calorie logging plus a subscription makes money.

2. **Going where the leaders aren't** : Cal AI barely grows in the Philippines, Vietnam, Thailand, and Indonesia. Those charts need only one or two hundred ratings to rank, and Calife uses full localization plus paid acquisition to get into the top 10.

3. **The studio's resources** : ChillFit already proved a template of "quiz onboarding → paywall → weekly/annual subscription" and an acquisition system. Calife is a copy-paste.

4. **Pricing** : $39.99/yr, plus a $19.99 discount tier, below established apps. One user review praises it as "cheaper than MyFitnessPal."

### 7. Differentiation

Almost no product differentiation: features, copy, and onboarding structure all match Cal AI. The real edge is **distribution** : which markets it enters (Southeast Asia, Nordics, Latin America in smaller languages), multilingual store names, low prices, plus the studio's existing ad capability. That's why it can scale, but it's easy to copy. FoodPilot, Calz, and WiseMeal are already doing the same thing in the same markets.

### 8. What to borrow

- Take a subscription category validated in the US and go to markets where leaders haven't localized and the Top Grossing bar is low (the Philippines, Vietnam, Thailand, Indonesia, the Nordics, Eastern Europe). Localize the store name market by market, and enter at a low price.

- Reuse one set of onboarding, paywall, and attribution templates across several apps, and have a studio launch new niches in batches each quarter.

- Reverse-engineer from the Top Grossing chart bar: first check which stores rank #10 with only 100 ratings in the library, then decide where to go.

### 9. Uncertain

- Real revenue and ad spend: third-party estimates range from under $5K to $100K MRR, a 20x gap.

- Ad channel breakdown (Meta / Google / ASA / TikTok shares): our ad library doesn't track it, and Peekly's data requires login.

- The relationship between "Hangzhou Toutou Shi Dao Technology" and FOYATECH, and team size: only one line on the website. Don't confuse it with Wu Xiaobo's "Toutoushidao Investment Fund." Whether they're related is unverified.

- Retention and refund rates, and the share of revenue from weekly subscriptions.
