# A bookkeeping app that blew up from an iPhone tip video: how Margen squeezed into Spain's finance Top Paid chart with 127 ratings

**What it is** A Spanish-language iPhone bookkeeping + net worth app built by a solo indie developer in Spain, at €4.99/month or €39.99/year subscription.

**Why it took off** The founder posts on TikTok every day, using lesser-known iPhone tricks like "automatic bookkeeping with Apple Pay" to drive installs. Spain's finance Top Paid chart has a very low bar, so a few subscriptions are enough to chart, and the audience spills over into Latin America.

**B** **How you could follow** Don't build another one in Spain; pick a language market with fewer local developers and a lower Top Paid bar (or build the Android version for Spanish-speaking regions), and copy the playbook: founder on camera daily + iPhone-trick hook + free view of totals, paid tiers by number of slots.

Grade B: the playbook costs almost nothing and transfers to other markets, but revenue is likely a few hundred to a thousand-plus euros a month, Spain already has seven or eight similar apps, and everything depends on one person appearing on camera consistently. Chatter in the niche

A solo developer in Spain built a Spanish-language bookkeeping + net worth app. Six days after launch he posted a TikTok saying "Pay with Apple Pay and the expense is already logged," which reached 290k views. Over the next three-plus months he posted videos almost daily, with zero paid ads, and the app stayed in Spain's finance Top Paid chart between #13 and #37. The ceiling for this kind of business isn't high, and Spain already has a crowd of similar apps. What's worth learning is the playbook, and whether it can be copied into another market; more on that below.

### A video with 290k views

On Jul 22, 2026, Margen was six days after launch when founder Marco Muñoz García posted a vertical short on the TikTok account @margen.app, captioned:

> Cada vez que pago con Apple Pay, mi gasto ya aparece preparado. 🤯 Tarda menos de 1 minuto en configurarse.

("Every time you pay with Apple Pay, the expense has already been filled in for you. Setup takes under a minute.")

As of 11-06, the video has 290k views and 75 comments. The most-liked comment is a cold splash of water: "Your bank app already shows every expense, so what's the point?" The second most-liked: "How is this better than Fintonic? I think it's worse." But the video did its job: it told many people for the first time that the iPhone can do this, and sent them to the store link on the profile.

This account wasn't new. In 2025 it posted iPhone 17 reviews and similar content, with its top post at 1.22M views; after the app launched, Marco turned it straight into a product account.

### What Margen is

A Spanish-only, iPhone-only personal finance app, launched 2026-07-16, with this as the developer's only app. The first line of the store page reads: "Turn all your money into one live-updating number." It subtracts liabilities from banks, investments, crypto, and property to produce net worth, with stocks and crypto refreshing at live prices. Entries can be added manually, by scanning receipts, via Siri voice, or by using iPhone Shortcuts to catch Apple Pay transaction notifications; you can also import statements from common Spanish banks like BBVA, Santander, CaixaBank, Sabadell, ING, Trade Republic, and Revolut.

It's a subscription: the free plan allows 1 investment assets, 1 liabilities, 2 budgets, and 2 recurring entries, and only 1 bank statement imports; Premium is €4.99/month or €39.99/year, with property valuation, AI import of any bank statement, recurring investment tracking, AI reviews, and PDF reports (website getmargen.com).

It updates fast: in Sep 10 a 2.2 redesign of the investments page added monthly mortgage deductions; in Oct 9 a 2.3 redesign of the analytics page added shareable weekly summaries and a streak tracker for logging. One reviewer wrote "Para ser nueva, esta super completa" ("For being new, this is super complete"; App Store Spain, 9-22).

### How big is it really?

Not much. Put the numbers side by side:

| Metric | Metric | Sources |
|---|---|---|
| App Store ratings (all regions) | 134 → 146,10-28 to 11-06: up 12 in ten days | App Store, daily numbers |
| including Spain | 127 ratings, averaging 4.49 stars | App Store Spain store, 11-06 |
| Spain Finance Top Grossing | ranked between #13 and #37 over ten days, peaking at #11-06 24 | App Store charts |
| other markets where it charted | best rank #14 in Uruguay, 21 in Panama, 25 in Costa Rica, 33 in Argentina, plus Mexico, Colombia, Portugal and others | App Store charts, 10-28–11-06 |
| all-time best | 9-28 reached top 10 in Spain Finance Top Grossing | AppInsider |
| Installs | est. 5k+ (AppInsider); the founder claims "21,600+ users" | the latter is self-reported and unverified |

127 ratings is enough to reach the top 25, because the Spain chart has an absurdly low bar. On the same day (11-06), Breakout at #6 had only 1 ratings, #12 Boti had 19, and #18 Mi€sencial had 11. Here, a few subscriptions a day is enough to chart. So Margen's monthly revenue is probably a few hundred to a couple thousand euros (inferred, no public figures).

### Where users come from: the founder on camera, posting daily

Almost all from TikTok. The account 7-20 to 11-04 posted 89 videos, about 2.36M total views, but the median is only about 2,450. The total is carried by a dozen or so 100k+ hits, which fall into three or four formats:

- **iPhone hidden tricks** : 7-22 post at 290k; 10-06"If you pay with Apple Pay, this saves you a lot of time. Pay → expense pops up → save → done"238k; 10-21"I had no idea the iPhone could do this"32k.

- **Posting their own spending and asking viewers how to cut it** : 9-16"How much do you have left each month?" 133K views, 86 comments, and the comment section is full of advice: "Sell the dog, cut back on coffee" and "Can afford an Audi, so cook at home and take the bus." August has two similar ones, around 200K each.

- **The founder on camera** : 9-20"Hi all, I'm Marco, and I built an app that manages money for you"140k views. In the comments, people ask whether the data is encrypted, when an Android version is coming, and suggest a plugin for ChatGPT or Claude.

- **Concept pitch** : 10-03 "Your bank balance isn't how much money you really have" 115k.

Every post ends with "link en mi perfil" (link in my bio). App Store reviews even say outright: "Descubrí la aplicación gracias a TikTok" ("I found this app through TikTok", 8-07).

Other channels are scattered. Instagram has Reels saying "comment MARGEN and I'll DM you the link" (reach can't be verified). On X he does build-in-public that almost nobody sees. The website blog started in 2026 May, before the app launched, with long Spain-specific personal finance posts (how the 50/30/20 rule works in Spain, home-buying calculations, "2026 best budgeting apps in Spain"); effect unclear. There's also a stunt: he auctioned the ad space on his new phone's casing on the website, aiming for €2,589 and raising only €5, with the page saying any excess would go to ads for Margen, suggesting he's barely buying paid acquisition now (inferred).

### Why it works

**The selling point isn't the one on the store page.** The store page leads with "real-time net worth," but that concept already exists: Neto (launched 2026-01), France's Finary, and the US's Kubera. What spread is "automatic Apple Pay expense tracking": many people have used an iPhone for years without knowing it, and it turns into a 15-second demo that makes you want to try it. The feature that's easy to film is also the one that sells. By the way, this capability comes from iPhone Shortcuts' "Transaction" automation, which any budgeting app can use (inferred); reviews also say automatic tracking requires Premium (unverified).

**One person on camera, posting daily, spending nothing.** Most videos get one or two thousand views, with an occasional 100k+ hit. It's a volume-plus-occasional-hit model that costs time, not budget.

**Picking the right market.** Spanish speakers, iPhone users, people who care about money. Local bank statement import and local content like "where the money goes on a 2,900€ monthly salary in Madrid" are things English-first products and big players won't do. The chart bar is also low, so a small number of subscriptions can chart, and from there it spills over naturally into Uruguay, Argentina and Costa Rica.

**The free tier shows the total first.** Net worth and basic tracking are free, giving users the satisfaction of "seeing how much I have." Once investments and liabilities pile up you have to pay; the annual plan works out to 3.33€/month.

### Who it's competing with

The Spanish niche is far from empty. In 2026 a wave of indie developers also showed up:

| Product | Launched | Spain scale (11-06) | Compared with Margen |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fintonic | 2013 | 25,883 ratings, Finance Free chart #58 | Established, connects directly to banks, free, earns from selling financial products; many people would rather not hand over their bank account |
| Wallet(BudgetBakers) | 2015 | 1,002 ratings, Top Grossing #9 | Cross-border general expense tracking, not localized for Spain |
| Rata y Fina | 2026-07-13 | 236 ratings, Top Grossing #10 | A Spanish indie personal finance app from the same period that ranks higher than Margen |
| Neto: Finanzas y Patrimonio | 2026-01-20 | 95 ratings, Top Grossing #60 | Nearly identical positioning, launched half a year earlier, but no content marketing |
| Lingot: Gastos y Patrimonio | 2026-08-07 | 71 ratings, Top Grossing #25 | Three weeks later, similar name and positioning, recently gaining ratings faster than Margen (about 14 per week) |
| Boti, Mi€sencial, Tesora (10-21) | 2026-07~10 | 6–19 ratings | Another batch of similar products from Spanish indie developers |
| Finary | 2021 | 27 ratings, Top Grossing #179 | France's net-worth leader, hasn't gained traction in Spain |

A group of web products (Whisper Money, Fider, Cuéntamo and others) already have pages dedicated to "comparing with Margen," which shows that within the small Spanish personal finance tools circle, it's already the one everyone benchmarks against.

### Can you ride it?

Building another one for Spain isn't worth it: there are already seven or eight similar products, the chart bar is low, and that in turn shows the total pie is small, with everyone splitting a few hundred euros a month.

What's worth copying is the playbook itself, which barely depends on anything unique to Margen: no big-company traffic, no proprietary data, no existing users. A person who's willing to appear on camera and post daily can replicate it in another language market. The markets to look for have three traits: few indie developers building in the local language, lots of local banks that English-first products don't serve, and a low-bar Finance Top Grossing chart on the App Store. Italy, Portugal/Brazil and Poland are worth a look at their charts first (inferred, not checked one by one). Another gap is the one that keeps coming up in Margen's own comments: "What about Android?"

The weaknesses are also clear: a low ceiling, and growth depends entirely on one person's on-camera presence and posting frequency; stop posting and growth stops. Margen's TikTok views have already dropped from 710k in August to 450k in October, with new videos mostly in the low thousands.

### If it were you

**Verdict** : B. The playbook is clear and the cost is nearly zero, but it's a small business making a few hundred to a couple thousand euros a month, in a Spanish market that's already crowded.

**Who it suits** : a solo builder whose native language is one that local developers haven't fully covered for finance apps, who is willing to talk about money and phone tricks on camera, and who can keep posting daily for three months straight.

**Who it doesn't suit** : people who don't want to show their face, or who want to grow through paid acquisition or SEO; people who want to fight head-on with Margen, Lingot and Rata y Fina in the Spanish-speaking market; people aiming for $10k+ a month.

**How to build it** : iPhone first (Apple Pay plus Shortcuts auto-tracking is the easiest moment to film), local language, import from major local banks. Net worth and basic tracking free; charge for investments, liabilities and budgets, with annual pricing set at 30–40 in local currency. Write a few long local personal finance articles one to two months before launch.

**How to get users** : the founder on camera posting daily on TikTok and Reels, rotating three formats: iPhone trick demos ("you didn't know the iPhone could do this"); showing your own fixed monthly spending and asking "what would you cut?"; concept explainers like "bank balance isn't how much you have." Every post says "link in my profile." When something hits, make more versions of the same format.

**How early to start** : the earlier the better; there's no hard deadline. January is the peak for "managing money in the new year," so launching before December lets you catch it. The window closes once local developers in your market start piling in (like Spain in summer 2026).

**Signs you've misread it** : (1) the Finance Top Grossing #30 in your chosen market has rating counts in the hundreds, meaning it isn't a low-bar market; (2) after 30+ videos, none reach 50k views, meaning the hook doesn't land locally; (3) Apple builds "automatic transaction tracking" into its own Wallet app or restricts third-party access, killing the hook; (4) the flip side: if Margen or Lingot consistently chart in the top 20 in markets outside Spain (like Mexico or Argentina), the Spanish-speaking pie is bigger than it looks and worth recalculating.

### One line

A Spanish indie developer, Marco Muñoz García, built an iPhone budgeting and net-worth app, listed 2026-07-16. Its users come almost entirely from **his own daily TikTok videos** . The hook is "pay with Apple Pay and the expense logs itself," not the store description's "live net worth." The user base is in Spain, where the finance Top Grossing chart is an easy bar to clear, so 127 ratings were enough to reach the top 15–37 of finance. It is small and has a low ceiling. Other Spanish indie developers have since shipped similar products, and some rivals even publish "vs. Margen" comparison pages.

### 1. Current data

- **Ratings** : the all-store total rose from 134 (10-28) to 146 (11-06), +12 over 10 days; Spain went 117→127 (appstore library, app_day). Average 4.49 stars (Apple lookup, es). On ratings alone, that is about 6–7 new per week, not a breakout.

- **Top Grossing** : in Spain's finance (6015) Top Grossing, it sat between #13 and #37 for 10 days, with #24 on 11-06. Its best rank was #14 in Uruguay, #21 in Panama, #25 in Costa Rica, #33 in Argentina. It has also charted in Colombia, Portugal, Mexico, Belgium, Guatemala, Switzerland and El Salvador (appstore library, 2026-10-28–11-06). AppInsider records: 2026-09-28 reached the top 10 of Spain's finance Top Grossing; 10-04 reached the top 100 of Spain's finance Top Free. In October it added finance Top Grossing rankings in the UK, Germany, Italy, Argentina, Colombia and Mexico. Estimated global installs: "5k+" (appinsider.io/app/margen-patrimonio-en-vivo-6779967453).

- **Low bar** : on the same day (11-06), Spain's #6 finance Top Grossing app Breakout had only 1 ratings, #12 Boti had 19, and #18 Mi€sencial had 11 (appstore library). In Spain, reaching that rank apparently only takes a few subscriptions a day. **Inferred** : monthly revenue is likely a few hundred to one or two thousand euros. Not verified.

- **Self-reported by the founder** : "21,600+ users, top 15 Finance in Spain" (getmargen.com/duo, founder's claim, unverified).

- **Pricing** : the free plan allows 1 investment assets, 1 liabilities, 2 budgets, 2 recurring entries, and 1 bank statement imports. Premium is €4.99/month or €39.99/year, with property valuation, AI import of any bank statement, DCA, AI review and AI advisor, and PDF reports (getmargen.com).

- **Iteration** : Sep 10 release 2.2 (investments page redesigned, mortgage deducted monthly); Oct 9 release 2.3 (analytics page redesigned, shareable weekly summary, interest-bearing accounts, consecutive-logging streaks, Liquid Glass tab bar) (Apple lookup; AppInsider timeline).

### 2. Competitors

| Product | Where | Launched | Scale (Spain) | How Margen differs |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Fintonic | iOS/Android | 2013 | 25,883 ratings, finance Top Free #58 (appstore library 11-06) | An established Spanish player that connects directly to banks, free, earns from financial products; Margen doesn't require bank linking, relies on subscriptions, has a newer UI and live net worth |
| Wallet(BudgetBakers) | iOS/Android/web | 2015 | 1,002 ratings, Finance Top Grossing #9 | A cross-border general budgeting product; Margen serves Spanish-speaking users only and supports Spanish bank statement imports |
| MonAi / Finanz / Money Pro / Monefy | iOS | 2017–2023 | 316–3,830 ratings, Top Grossing #8–23 | Traditional budgeting, not centered on net worth |
| Finary | iOS/web | 2021 | Only 27 ratings in Spain, Top Grossing #179 | France's net-worth leader (direct broker connections) barely made it into Spain; Margen is the same concept, localized for Spain and manual-first |
| Kubera, Copilot Money | Web / iOS | — | Not charted in Spain | English only, priced in USD, expensive (Kubera $250/year, per cuentamo.com) |
| Neto: Finanzas y Patrimonio | iOS | 2026-01-20 | 95 ratings, Top Grossing #60 | Launched about six months before Margen with nearly the same positioning (a net-worth app without bank linking), but no content funnel |
| Lingot: Gastos y Patrimonio | iOS | 2026-08-07 | 71 ratings, 14 added weekly (faster than Margen), Top Grossing #25 | Launched 3 weeks later with the same "spending + net worth" positioning and a very similar name |
| Rata y Fina | iOS | 2026-07-13 | 236 ratings, Top Grossing #10 | A Spanish indie budgeting app from the same period, ranked ahead of Margen |
| Boti, Mi€sencial, Tesora (2026-10-21) | iOS | 2026-07~10 | 6–19 ratings, Top Grossing #12 or not charted | Spanish indie-developer budgeting apps of the same type, appearing in clusters |
| Cuéntamo, OpenCap, Whisper Money, Fider, Exirio, Dinerio | Web / multi-platform | 2026 | Not verified | Web or all platforms; Whisper Money is open source and connects directly to PSD2; Cuéntamo can calculate variable-rate mortgages automatically |
| Apple Wallet + Shortcuts "transaction" automation | Big-company features | iOS 17 | — | Margen's most viral feature, "automatic logging with Apple Pay," runs on this system capability, which any budgeting app can plug into (**Inferred** , not checked app by app) |

Bottom line: this category has no shortage of products. Spain alone has produced a wave of similar indie apps in 2026 years. Margen has no technical moat.

### 3. Growth tactics (evidence)

1. **The founder runs the TikTok account himself and posts daily (confirmed)** . Account @margen.app, 2,484 followers, 118k likes. From 2026-07-20 to 11-04 he posted 89 videos, roughly 2.36M total views, median about 2,450. By month: July 570k, August 710k, September 620k, October 450k (TikHub, pulled 11-06). The hit formulas are consistent:
    - iPhone tips like "after paying with Apple Pay, the expense is logged automatically": 7-22 has 290k views, 10-06 has 238k, 7-30 has 47k;
    - Showing his own monthly fixed expenses and asking viewers "which would you cut?": 8-10 has 200k, 8-03 has 196k, 9-16 has 133k;
    - Showing spending by category and budget caps: 7-28 has 147k;
    - The founder on camera saying "I made an App": 9-20 has 140k;
    - "Your bank balance isn't how much money you really have": 10-03 has 115k. Every video ends with "link en mi perfil," pointing to the store link on his profile. The account posted iPhone review videos for 2025 years (top hit 17M views, 1.22), so it was an existing iPhone content account repurposed as a product account (TikHub). A comment explicitly says "Descubrí la aplicación gracias a TikTok" (appstore library review, es, 2026-08-07).

2. **Instagram Reels (mostly confirmed)** : @getmargen (location tagged Talavera de la Reina) has a "Comenta MARGEN" Reel, using the comment-keyword-for-link trick (from a Jina search index summary; could not log in to verify).

3. **X build in public (small scale)** : @marcodev04 and @getmargen. None of the last 120 days of x-radar coverage mentions them, so the reach is tiny.

4. **SEO blog (confirmed, results unclear)** : getmargen.com/blog publishes local long-tail topics for Spain, such as how the 50/30/20 rule works in Spain, home-buying calculators, car loan simulators, and "best budgeting app in Spain 2026". The first batch of articles went live 2026-05-09, before the app launched.

5. **Small stunt** : the "iPhone Duo" auction page sells placement on a new foldable phone's body to brands for advertising. Target €2,589, currently €5 raised (getmargen.com/duo). It has barely worked, but it shows his approach: content and stunts, not paid acquisition.

6. **Paid acquisition** : our Meta Ad Library shows no ads for getmargen or this app id (the library only tracks a fixed list of products, so absence doesn't prove there's no spend). On the duo page the founder writes that money raised above target goes to advertising for Margen, which suggests there is essentially no paid acquisition right now (inferred).

7. **Apple features, press coverage, celebrity promotion** : no evidence found.

### 4. Why it took off

- **The hook is the right one** : on TikTok the top performers aren't about "net worth" but about little-known iPhone tricks like automatic logging through Apple Pay payments. Titles like "7 años usando iPhone y no sabía esto" are built to spread, and they demonstrate the app's core experience directly.

- **The founder fronts the content himself, posting daily** : most of the 89 videos get a few thousand views, and a handful of 100k+ hits carry the total. This is volume-first, occasional-hit: no budget needed.

- **Good market pick** : users are Spanish-speaking, on iPhone, and money-focused. Spain's banks (BBVA, Santander, CaixaBank, Sabadell, ING, Trade Republic, Revolut) all import statements, and the content is local (what a monthly salary of 2,900€ buys in Madrid). Big players and English-first apps don't serve this niche well, and Spain's finance Top Grossing bar is low: a few subscriptions can chart, then it spills into Latin America (Uruguay, Argentina, Costa Rica).

- **Well-designed free tier** : net worth and expense tracking are free, so users get the satisfaction of seeing their total first. Paywalls kick in at investments, debts, and budget counts, and the annual plan is only 3.33€/month. People pay because finance apps retain well and users already have a reason to manage their money.

- **Fast updates, responsive to users** : two major versions in two months, and suggestions from reviews (custom categories, mortgage deductions) shipped quickly. Reviews include things like "Para ser nueva, esta super completa" (appstore library review).

### 5. Differentiation

The store description says the differentiator is "a live-updating net worth number." But Neto, which doesn't connect to banks and only tracks net worth, was out half a year earlier, and Finary and Kubera use the same concept, so this is **not** why it took off. What set it apart is **distribution and localization** : a Spanish founder used TikTok to show Spanish speakers "Apple Pay auto-logging + seeing clearly how much money you have." Low-friction logging (Apple Pay automation, Siri voice input, receipt scanning, back-tap) is worth noting, and it's also the easiest part to film. The features that are easy to film and the features that sell turn out to be the same ones, and that combination is why it grew.

### 6. Visibility and copycats

- **Visibility: circulating in a small circle.** No press coverage, not on TrustMRR, no public MRR, and little noise on X. But within Spain's personal finance tool scene, competitors already treat it as a reference point: Whisper Money wrote "Margen vs Whisper Money" (calling it "the most honest comparison"), Fider wrote "Fider vs Margen," and Cuéntamo's "Net worth apps in Spain" name-checks it. The founder self-reports 21.6k users.

- **Copycats** : Lingot: Gastos y Patrimonio (2026-08-07, launched 3 weeks later, very similar name and positioning, and its rating growth has already passed Margen), Tesora: patrimonio y ahorro (2026-10-21); plus a batch of Spanish indie expense trackers (Boti, Mi€sencial, Rata y Fina). Whether they were built specifically to copy Margen is inference.

### 7. Takeaways

- Pick a market **split by language and region, where big players don't go deep and the Top Grossing bar is low** (Spanish-language personal finance). A few subscriptions can chart, then use the chart to spill over into Latin America.

- Package what users want as a "platform hidden trick" (here, iPhone's Apple Pay transaction automation). That spreads better than describing the product's selling points directly.

- The founder fronts daily content, plus interactive prompts like "here's what I spent, which would you cut?" That's what lifts comment counts.

- The free tier gives you "seeing your total first"; the count limits are at investments and debts. The annual price is set low and compared to "a cup of coffee."

- Write long-form local SEO pieces before launch to build the foundation.

### 8. Still unclear

- Real revenue and subscriber counts: the Top Grossing bar is very low, so revenue may be tiny.

- The 21.6k users are self-reported by the founder.

- Instagram's scale (couldn't log in), and whether they run Meta or TikTok ads elsewhere (our libraries don't cover it).

- TikTok views dropped noticeably in October (450k, versus 710k in August), and newer videos mostly sit around a thousand views. Whether growth comes from future hits or from the chart's organic traffic is unclear.

- Whether Spanish users can read transactions directly via Apple FinanceKit (currently looks like Shortcuts automation, unverified).
