Watch the next episode, watch the uncut version: how a 7-person Korean team gets fans of AI BL dramas to pay
What it is A landscape AI drama app with only romance, romance fantasy and BL. Content comes from outside AI drama creators, unlocked per episode with coins, and 19 the uncut version costs more.
Why it took off A batch of Korean AI BL drama creators on YouTube had fans but no revenue. It builds a paywall for them: YouTube keeps updating for free, the App offers early access and uncut versions, and the creators bring their own fans. The fans complain about the price but still pay.
AHow you could follow Don't build another one in Korea. Go to Japanese, Chinese danmei and Thai BL circles, sign AI drama creators who already have fans first, and offer early access, uncut versions and revenue share. Then add the monthly subscription it doesn't offer.

A small Korean company that makes web-novel writing tools launched NovelaPlay in July, an AI drama App featuring only romance, romance fantasy and BL. It doesn't shoot any dramas itself; all content comes from AI drama creators on YouTube who already have fans. By early November, it had fewer than 400 ratings in the Korean App Store, yet steadily ranked around #20 in entertainment grossing, next to big short-drama platforms like DramaBox and GoodShort that grew through paid acquisition. Below is how it did it, and where followers can go.
A YouTube community post
In July 20 2026, the Korean AI BL drama channel 「오드원 ODD:ONE」 posted a community note titled 「Important Notice & Series Update」. The channel's hottest series at the time was 《The Crown Prince with a Few Months to Live Is Obsessed》 (《시한부 황태자가 집착합니다》). The post said the series would move to a new AI drama platform, with a blunt reason: 「The biggest reason is to protect our precious IP, and so the 'uncut version' can finally be released safely.」
The rules were: YouTube keeps its usual Thursday 「9 p.m.」 schedule, and on the platform you can watch the next episode early; 「Episode 8 on the platform is the uncut extended version... 🙈 No need to explain why 🔥」. The post ended with invite code oddone, which gave 100 coins on sign-up, 「about $1, enough to watch an episode free」.
The channel was created in February 2026, and by November had 21k subscribers and nearly 6M total views (YouTube, 11-06). Three days after the post, NovelaPlay's iOS version launched, and the first Korean review was in English: 「I've been waiting all week for the iOS release of this app.」
What it is
A landscape long-form drama streaming App accepting three genres: romance, 로판 (romance fantasy, the "reincarnated as a duchess" stories common in web novels and webtoons), and BL. Episodes run 5 to 18 minutes, not 1-minute vertical shorts. The store page reads "widescreen, cinematic visuals," "created by creators using AI tools," and "subtitles in over 20 languages."
The content comes from 40 external AI drama creators (according to the company's recruiting posts), mostly made with Higgsfield, ElevenLabs, Suno and CapCut. The first few episodes are free, and after that you unlock with coins by runtime. The uncut extended version, which 19 bans, costs 2 to 3 times more.
Behind it is 노벨라스튜디오 (Novela Studio) in Mapo, Seoul, founded in 2022, with 6 to 8 people. It originally made the web-novel writing tool Novela, reportedly used by over 10k authors. It raised a seed round in 2023 and a Pre-A in August 2026, amounts undisclosed.
Metric
| Numbers | Sources | |
|---|---|---|
| iOS release | 2026-07-23 (Android 7-20 first) | App Store, ODD:ONE community post |
| iOS global rating | 685, +103 in the last 7 days, 14–18 per day | App Store,11-06 |
| Of which Korea / Japan / US / Taiwan | 392 / 110 / 88 / 64 | App Store storefronts, 11-06 |
| Korea rank | entertainment grossing #20–24 (in that spot since 10-28), overall grossing #142–193 | App Store Korea |
| other stores | charted on entertainment grossing charts in 15–23 countries; Japan, Taiwan, Thailand, Vietnam and Russia at #56–151 | App Store, 10-28 to 11-06 |
| Google Play | About 77k installs total, +6,291 in the last 7 days (about 900 a day), rated 4.2; best Korea Play overall grossing rank #45 | Google Play,11-06 |
Small, but the money is out of proportion to the downloads: 77k installs and it's already in the top 50 of Korea's Google Play Top Grossing. This is the shape of "a few heavy fans × high price per user." The company's job postings claim 60% of users are overseas and say it "sets a new revenue high every week." Neither claim can be verified, but review counts in Japan, the US and Taiwan suggest people abroad are paying.
Where users come from: creators bring their fans
The main engine is fans the creators already have. NovelaPlay doesn't make its own content. It recruits YouTube channels that already have followers, mostly AI BL and Korean fantasy-romance (로판) drama channels. After ODD:ONE, the video descriptions carried the same line: "Season 2 Episodes 1 and 2 uncut, full version continues on NovelaPlay," with a download link. A video on another channel, Black Latte, has 98k views, and its title reads "From Episode 4, available exclusively on the Novela Play app."
This is the serialization playbook that web comics and web novels have used for a decade: serve the free chapters where people discover the story, sell early access where they pay. AI drama adds one more lever: YouTube limits explicit content, while the app can carry the uncut version. The fans were already following, so the move costs them little; 20 subtitle languages let overseas BL fans on YouTube pay directly.
Second, invite codes. Both sides get coins, and the slots are capped. So the Korean App Store review sections turned into code-sharing threads: "DL5NCL7F, take your coins" and "ADQ2GG8A, enter my invite code and get 50 coins!!" Another reads "The code in the earlier reviews seems to be full, use mine instead." Most of these are five-star reviews, so part of the rating is probably written to hand out codes (inference).
Third, Instagram Reels and some sponsored posts. One review says "I saw it on the Reels from 비단뱀, it looked good." The official account posts clips on Reels with "search 'Contract Marriage with the Cursed Northern Duke' on NovelaPlay for the full version." A Naver blog has a recommendation post disclosing that it was paid (9-23).
Fourth, it is building its own creators. Starting September, NovelaPlay and ODD:ONE run a "one-person AI drama production 5-week class" at ₩49–690k each (about $350–500), 20 people per cohort, taught at D.CAMP in Seoul. The class makes money on its own, and graduates become new creators on the platform who bring their own fans with them.
Paid acquisition: none found. It is not in the Meta ad library, and a TikTok search for its name returns only unrelated Spanish TV shows of the same name. It can't be ruled out, but from the points above, it doesn't seem to need it.
Why now, and why this one
- AI video is good enough. In 2026 years, one person using tools like Higgsfield and Kling can make horizontal drama series that people actually watch. This year a batch of Korean AI BL and 로판 channels appeared on YouTube. They have fans but no way to earn: YouTube limits BL content and pays little.
- What it sells is a paywall for creators, not content. Early access, uncut versions, IP protection, multilingual subtitles and revenue share are exactly what these creators lack on YouTube. The creators do the acquisition for it, so its cost to acquire users is close to zero.
- This audience is very willing to pay. Nearly every review complains about the price, and people pay anyway. ODD:ONE, which fans call "the number one BL," is why many people came in.
- The team understands this readership. They spent three years building a writing tool, working with web novel authors and 로판/BL readers. Their job postings say "an eye for stories matters more than knowing how to use AI tools."
What users are complaining about
Almost all of it is about price:
"BL is obviously profitable, that's clear. But the pricing is ridiculous. It was supposed to be 1 minutes for 10 coins, so why is 19 now 10 minutes for 200 coins??? Is the 19 ban making it more expensive to play???This won't keep long-term users." (Korea store, Samsung, 10-27)
"18 minutes per episode for ₩7,500 (about $5), more than a discounted movie ticket… hope another platform shows up soon." (Korean store, 1 star, 10-16)
"Please add a monthly subscription. Paying ₩7,700 for buy-one-get-one to watch double, and it's only about 50 minutes of content anyway." (Korean store, 4 stars, 9-10)
A few other points are worth noting: update times are irregular (some creators said they'd update on a given weekday and posted a day late), resolution resets to 480p every time the app reopens, there is no switch between horizontal and vertical viewing, and users want to pay by bank transfer instead of in-app purchase. People who complain about the price still pay, which means it has pricing power. But "we want a subscription" and "we want another platform" are the openings left for newcomers.
Who's competing
| Competitors | Scale | How it differs from NovelaPlay |
|---|---|---|
| DramaBox, ReelShort, GoodShort, DramaWave, ShortMax | Charted in Korea's Entertainment Top Grossing at #6–#33; DramaBox reportedly earns over $300M a year | Vertical 1-minute episodes, mass-market genres, scaled through heavy paid acquisition |
| Vigloo and other Korean live-action short drama apps | Vigloo is #10 in Korea's Entertainment Top Grossing | Live-action shot on set, no AI, not focused on BL |
| FlexTV, MoboDrama, MyMuse and other AI-native short drama apps | One review roundup lists 23 of them | Aimed at Western markets, vertical format, platform-produced content; none focus on Korean-style BL or 로판 |
| Frontia, Jeta, Crack and other AI interactive stories / character chat | Charted at #8–#31 in Korea's Entertainment Top Grossing | They compete for the same women's entertainment budget, but the format is chat, not episodic drama |
| GagaOOLala, iQIYI, Viki and other BL streaming services | Big | Licensed live-action Thai and Chinese BL series, subscription model |
| CLIFF(NettY) | About 3,100 installs on Google Play, +2,384 in the last 7 days (11-06) | Launched 9-23, calls itself a "women's AI drama platform" and "the new home for AI BL drama." It also recruits outside AI creators. Not yet on iOS |
CLIFF is an almost exact copy, and in October it signed several AI creator studios within its first 4 weeks. Meanwhile, the second season of a leading AI BL series went to Japan's FOD. Creators aren't exclusive to any one platform; they go wherever the terms are best.
Almost no media outlet has written about NovelaPlay itself, and nobody on X is talking about it. Its spread is limited to the YouTube and Instagram circles of fans of Korean AI BL drama. Few people know about this model yet.
If it were you
The short verdict: someone is already building another NovelaPlay in Korea (CLIFF). What's worth doing is taking the same playbook to other languages and other AI drama communities where fans exist but nobody is monetizing, or adding the monthly subscription it hasn't built.
Who it suits: people already part of a women's entertainment community (BL, danmei, otome, 로판, Thai BL fans), who know the creators in that scene, and who can negotiate a small revenue-share team; people who understand app store review rules for adult-oriented content.
Who it doesn't suit: people who want to mass-produce AI drama themselves and compete on paid acquisition and DramaBox-style volume; people with no feel for this community who just want to "build an AI video app"; people who can't handle content moderation and payment risk.
How to do it:
- Find creators first, then build the app. On YouTube, Bilibili, TikTok and X, find channels in your language making AI BL / danmei / otome drama that already have tens of thousands of subscribers, and sign them one by one. The first ten creators are your entire acquisition funnel.
- Give creators what they can't get on YouTube: early access, uncut versions, IP protection, multilingual subtitles, and a clear revenue share.
- Copy its per-minute pricing, but add a monthly subscription. That's what reviewers ask for most, and it still hasn't built it.
- Copy its class: run a paid "one-person AI drama production" course, and the students become your next wave of supply.
A few directions: Japanese (the BL and otome markets are large, Japan already watches Korean AI BL, and NovelaPlay has 110 ratings in its Japan store), Chinese danmei (many overseas Chinese readers, while domestic platforms are stricter), Thai BL (real-life Thai BL already has a large international fanbase), and Spanish/Portuguese romance. Start with whichever language already has ready AI drama creators (inference; I did not verify creator counts for each language).
How to acquire users: don't buy ads. Give each creator a personal invite code, with both sides getting coins when it's used. Have creators put download links in video descriptions and community posts. The official account posts clips on Reels and TikTok with "full version on the app."
When to be early: within the next six to twelve months. AI drama creators are still looking for a home, and whoever offers the best terms gets the top names. The window closes once a large platform like DramaBox opens a BL vertical, or a copycat like CLIFF signs the top creators in each language.
What would mean you got it wrong: ① NovelaPlay drops out of Korea's Entertainment Top Grossing top 40 in December and its rating growth slows too, which would mean its money is concentrated in one or two shows that end once they finish. ② The App Store or Google Play starts removing or restricting 19-rated BL content, and the "uncut" card is gone. ③ Top creators start building their own apps, or YouTube loosens its rules and revenue share, and the platform layer gets bypassed.

Takeaway: small in scale (685 iOS ratings, 77k Google Play installs), but paying intensity is high relative to downloads. Korea iOS has only 392 ratings yet holds steady at #20 in Entertainment Top Grossing, and Google Play with only 77k installs reached #45 on the Korea overall Top Grossing chart. III. Growth levers (where users come from)
- Creators bring their own fans (main engine, confirmed). The platform doesn't make its own content; it recruits Korean AI BL drama creators who already have fans on YouTube. The typical case is ODD:ONE (오드원) — YouTube 21k subscribers, 5.97M total views, with the series 《시한부 황태자가 집착합니다》 ("The Dying Crown Prince Becomes Obsessed With Him"): 2026-07-20 announced his move to NovelaPlay in a YouTube community post, citing "protecting IP" and "uncut versions can be published safely." The rule: YouTube updates stay on Thursdays, but on NovelaPlay you can watch the next episode early, and from episode 8 onward it's the uncut extended version. He also shared invite code
oddonefor 100 coins (about $1). Since then, YouTube video descriptions link novelaplay.onelink.me: "Season 1, 2 episodes uncut on NovelaPlay." Another channel, Black Latte (98k views), titled a video "From Episode 4, available exclusively on the Novela Play app." Sources: youtube.com/post/UgkxxBFmAMh4WgMFBQcyvAP0WDqqPU6cbnrA; youtube.com/watch?v=lIytJR_3OiY; YouTube Data API search results.- This is the webtoon/web-novel playbook — free serialized episodes on YouTube as the hook, early access and uncut versions behind a paywall in the app — transplanted onto AI drama. The fans already follow the work, so migration friction is minimal; multilingual subtitles (20 languages) let overseas BL fans on YouTube pay too, which explains the "60% overseas users" figure.
- Invite-code virality + review-section code drops (confirmed). In the app, Me → Invite Code gives both sides coins. Many 5-star reviews in the Korean iOS store have invite codes as their titles ("DL5NCL7F get your coins," "ADQ2GG8A enter invite code and get 50 coins," "93JH3UMQ… the old review's slots seem full"), showing codes have user caps and users relay them in reviews. This drives acquisition, and it also inflates the rating count (some ratings were posted to share codes). Source: appstore.review.
- Paid Naver blog posts (confirmed). For example blog.naver.com/qhfka258/224420897765 (2026-09-23), which states at the top that the author "received a fee from the business," pitching "turning the 로판 from webtoons into AI dramas."
- Cultivating creator supply: paid AI-drama production courses (confirmed). Starting 2026-09-22, NovelaPlay × ODD:ONE run a "1-person AI drama production 5-week class," ₩49–690k per person, 20 people per cohort, held at D.CAMP Mapo, with a toolchain of ChatGPT/Gemini + Higgsfield + ElevenLabs + Suno + CapCut; students get a Novela writing-tool membership. Source: instagram.com/p/DdlKZVfkfSS. This is both revenue and a way to mass-produce new creators on the platform (who then bring their own fans).
- Installed base from the Novela writing tool (inferred, partly confirmed). Novela has 10k+ web-novel authors; the X account @novela_s0 announced it is "shifting from a writing tool to a partner helping authors reach more readers," and has run short-story contests and "visual production support." Author-side trust and IP are the supply source, but whether readers migrated from Novela is unverified.
- Paid acquisition: no evidence found. Meta Ad Library (metaads) has no Page for Novela/NovelaPlay; TikTok searches for "novelaplay" and "노벨라플레이" return only namesake Spanish telenovela noise; x-radar shows 0 mentions in the last 120 days. Our ad library only tracks listed products, so not finding ads doesn't mean none were run.
4. Why it broke out
- Timing: in 2026, AI video tools (Higgsfield, Kling, Veo generation one) let a single person make watchable landscape series. In early 2026, a batch of AI BL/로판 channels appeared on Korean YouTube (ODD:ONE started its channel in 2026-02 and hit 5.97M views in half a year). These creators have fans but no monetization path: YouTube throttles BL content and pays little. The Hollywood Reporter reported that in Q3 2026, 2/3 of the vertical short dramas launched outside China were AI-generated, but nearly all were mass-market vertical. Korean-style women's-oriented or BL landscape long-form is an empty space.
- The platform sells a "paywall for creators," not a "content factory": early access, uncut versions, IP protection, multilingual subtitles and revenue share solve the pain points AI-drama creators have on YouTube, so they bring their fans over on their own. Acquisition cost is near zero.
- Women's/BL audiences have very high willingness to pay: reviews constantly complain it's expensive ("18 minutes per episode, 7,500 won is more than a discounted movie ticket," "19 locked for 10 minutes, 200 coins," "no monthly plan"), yet people keep paying. That's why it holds a top-20 spot in Entertainment Top Grossing in Korea with only 392 ratings. Per-minute pricing plus 19 paywall surcharges is the core of monetization.
- The team understands the web-novel/creator ecosystem: 3 years building a writing tool built author relationships and an understanding of 로판/BL readers; the job postings stress that "taste in stories matters more than knowing AI tools."
5. Differentiation
Versus short-drama apps like DramaBox/ReelShort: landscape long episodes + women's-only (로판/BL) + external AI creator supply + uncut/early access. Versus AI-native short-drama apps: not in-house production, not English mass-market topics, but Korean BL. Versus YouTube: paywall + content latitude. This differentiation is why it worked: landscape long-form lets creators who already publish landscape drama on YouTube move over with zero rework; "BL + 19-lock uncut" is the part YouTube and the big platforms won't do, but fans are most willing to pay for. Without it, it's just another small drama app that can't outspend the leaders on paid user acquisition.
6. Visibility
Chatter within small circles. Revenue isn't disclosed (only a job post says "record weekly revenue"); no media coverage of NovelaPlay itself was found (media only wrote about the Novela writing tool's contests); x-radar shows zero mentions in the last 120 days; it is absent from aidramareviews' 23-app AI drama ranking. Spread is confined to the YouTube/Instagram circles of Korean AI BL drama fans.
VII. Copycats
- CLIFF (NettY, com.netty.cliff): on Google Play 2026-09-23, its Instagram calls itself "여성향 AI 드라마 플랫폼" (women's AI drama platform) and "a new home for AI BL dramas"; in its 4th week of October it onboarded external AI creators such as 뭇웃, RIMOmov, 은밀하게고요하게, and Blip Studio; iOS coming; Play cumulative 3,100 installs, +2,384 in the last 7 days. It's nearly a copy of the same model. Sources: instagram.com/p/DetSP0Mj-I2; googleplay.app_profile.
- A Korean negative review reads "I hope another platform pops up soon," suggesting users are waiting for alternatives.
- On the creator side: the AI BL drama 《침향 시즌 2》 launched on Japan's FOD (per a YouTube trailer), showing top AI drama creators are also looking for other distribution channels; supply isn't exclusive.
VIII. Takeaways
- Find creator groups that have fans but no monetization, and build them a paywall, so creators do your acquisition: free serialized episodes on YouTube → early/uncut access in the app, with invite codes tied to creators.
- Go vertical into the subcategory with the highest willingness to pay (women's/BL/19-lock) rather than competing with big platforms on mass-market topics.
- Price by duration + content latitude: charge premium rates, and use visible invite codes in comments plus escalating daily check-in coins to keep light users.
- Sell paid courses while also manufacturing supply: the course earns money, and students become platform creators.
- Low-cost overseas expansion with multilingual subtitles: AI dramas carry no actor rights or dubbing costs, so 20 subtitle languages let overseas BL fans pay directly.
IX. Uncertainties
- Real revenue and the creator revenue-share rate are undisclosed; "60% overseas" and "record weekly revenue" are company recruiting claims, unverified.
- Whether they ran TikTok/Meta paid acquisition: not found in our library, which doesn't mean they didn't.
- How many ratings were written to share invite codes (good reviews may be inflated).
- Whether top creators (ODD:ONE, etc.) are exclusive; whether copycats like CLIFF can poach creators.
- Apple/Google review risk for 19-lock BL content; reviews focus on price complaints and the lack of a monthly plan, so long-term retention is doubtful.
- Whether revenue is concentrated in a few titles (ODD:ONE is called the "1 top BL title").
