SlotSwap: UK Driving Test Swap · ALDEMA

UK learners swapping driving test slots: a marketplace created by a policy, where SlotSwap took the lead by way of driving instructors

What it is A free app where UK learners swap already-booked driving test slots: you list your slot, it auto-matches every 5 minutes, and once both agree each of you calls the DVSA to complete the swap.

Why it took off New DVSA rules killed slot-grabbing and proxy booking services, leaving swapping as the only compliant way to speed things up. SlotSwap got driving instructors to back it on TikTok. Two videos drew 50 million+ views, breaking through the cold start of a two-sided marketplace. The more people join, the better the matches.

CHow you could follow Don't build another UK slot-swap app. Look for gaps in other countries or domains where regulation only allows the person themselves to act, but allows two people to swap. Use the same playbook: a free marketplace, respected figures from the industry fronting it on camera, and a paid product alongside.

Grade C: The UK segment already has a clear leader, network effects lock in the lead, there is a long list of web competitors and copycat apps, and the whole business rests on DVSA rules. What's worth learning is the playbook, not copying the product. Chatter in small circles

In 2026 May, the UK ruled that driving tests can only be booked by the learner, so slot-grabbing bots and proxy booking sites became illegal overnight. The only compliant way left to speed things up is two learners swapping slots, but the official side only handles the confirmation call and doesn't help people find a match. SlotSwap does exactly that: free, a native app, matching every 5 minutes. It wasn't the first to do it, but it got a group of driving instructors to speak for it on TikTok. Below: how it got started, where the money is, who's competing, and whether you can still follow.

An instructor says "give this a try"

In Aug 2026 18 — SlotSwap had been on the App Store for 8 days when Lee Albon, a UK driving instructor with 17 years in the job (TikTok @leealbondrivingschool, 226k followers), posted: "Give @Slot Swap a try…" The video got 292k views and 14.9k likes. In Sep 30 he posted again: "@Slot Swap is working!!" — 248k views.

Before this, learners swapping slots meant posting by hand on the pinned thread of Reddit's r/LearnerDriverUK, in Facebook groups and in WhatsApp groups, and they had to watch out for scammers. On Reddit, someone got scammed out of £182 by a WhatsApp "slot-swap admin". An instructor on camera saying "this swap is legal" addressed the two things learners feared most: breaking the law, and getting scammed.

As of Nov 6, SlotSwap has 373 ratings on the UK App Store, averaging about 4.5, and sits at #78 on the Productivity Top Free chart. It picked up 32 new ratings in the last 7 days, with 10 of them on 11-06 alone, and the pace is still climbing. The site claims 42k+ sign-ups, 18.5k+ active swap listings, and coverage of 353 test centres (slotswap.co.uk, 11-06, unverified).

What it is

A matching app: you enter the test centre, date and manual or automatic transmission of the slot you've already booked, then specify which dates and centres you'd accept. Every 5 minutes it scans the pool for people who want your date and whose date you want, and notifies both by email, app push or Telegram. Only when both agree within 24 hours do they see each other's booking reference, and then each calls the DVSA (Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency) on the same day to complete the swap.

It doesn't ask for your DVSA account and doesn't touch your booking. The pricing banner on the homepage reads "£0 · No catch": sign up, match, swap, and nothing costs a penny.

Why 2026 of all years

The demand was manufactured by a run of DVSA rules this year (gov.uk, BBC):

  • From Mar 31, each slot can be changed at most 2 times. Repeatedly grabbing and releasing slots got more costly, so "swap once and you're done" became more valuable.
  • From May 12, only the learner can book, reschedule or cancel a driving test. Instructors, proxy booking sites and bots are all out. Services that charged to grab slots disappeared overnight.
  • From June, you can only move to one of the 3 nearest test centres to the original.
  • From Oct 1, the two swapping people no longer need to call at the same time; each just makes one call on the same day.

Learners are still queuing for tests weeks or months out, and the one official route to speed things up requires you to find a match yourself. In April, a UK driving industry outlet wrote that "under the new rules, slot-swap apps have exploded" (John Cordell, 2026-04-13).

So many players, why this one

This niche is crowded, almost all of it launched in 2026, and the features are nearly identical:

NameFormScale (mostly self-reported)How SlotSwap differs
drivingtests.co.ukWeb, a veteran cancellation-alert site that pivoted55k+ sign-upsCharges only after a swap, SMS alerts, no app

Tip Slot Swap, UK Test SwapiOS, launched mid-October0 ratingsCopied the name, never took off

SlotSwap's iOS rating count is more than 7 times that of the number two app. Feature-wise it has nothing special, and TestSwap also encrypts the test center number. It pulled ahead on three things:

  1. Completely free. Rivals either charge after a swap or run monthly subscriptions. Learners already fear getting scammed, so "£0, no catch" is the easiest sell.
  2. Native app, faster notifications. When a slot opens, you have to accept within 24 hours, and push notifications with one-tap Telegram acceptance beat web sites that only send email. One Trustpilot user said they liked being "able to chat with the other person in the app and not having to enter my license number, so it didn't feel like a scam" (10-12).
  3. Instructor influencers, the biggest factor. A swap requires the same test center, the same vehicle type, and dates that happen to suit both people, so the bigger the pool, the easier it is to match. Cold-starting a two-sided marketplace is the hardest part, and it broke through the cold start by borrowing instructors' trust.

The third point shows up in the results: at the same time, searching "driving test swap" in the UK, the top results were TestSwap, drivingtests.co.uk and DriveSoon. SlotSwap didn't make the top 10. It gets little web search traffic, but the word of mouth is its own. On Trustpilot, 10-27 left a review: "Slotswap was the only service I could find a partner to swap driving test with within 3 days. (Signed up everywhere I could find)."

Where users come from

  • Driving instructors' TikTok (confirmed, the main channel): Besides two posts from Lee Albon, there's @drivingtesttipsclaire (47k followers), who tagged #ad in 11-03 and said: "Think of SlotSwap as a dating app for driving tests. You have a December slot and feel ready by November; another learner has a November slot and wants to push it to December." @learn.with.paul labeled 10-29 as AD; @nationdriveuk (56k followers, former examiner) 11-05 posted "slot swap new features" and also shared it to his own Facebook swap group. Accounts range from 220k-follower big accounts to local instructors with a few thousand followers, and posts kept coming from late October into early November, with the push still escalating. Lee Albon's two posts were not labeled as ads, so it's unclear whether they were paid or a swap of favors.
  • Its own TikTok account @slot.swap (confirmed): 2,342 followers, 42 videos, no face shown, sharing Highway Code tips and ending with "Test too far away? Swap it." Posting began in July, before the app launched; one video has 7-06 with 154k views. Build the audience first, then ship the app.
  • Reddit and Facebook learner groups (confirmed as being discussed): Posts mostly ask "Is this legal?", and replies mostly say "It's just matchmaking, so it's legal."
  • App Store search (inferred): The app is literally called "UK Driving Test Swap," and on iOS there are almost no decent matchmaking apps in the category, so store search traffic for this term most likely goes to it.
  • Official site SEO: Pass-rate pages for each test center and city pages, with blog posts signed by instructors. It's being done, but results are modest.

Where the money comes back

SlotSwap itself doesn't charge. The same developer, ALDEMA (a small studio that has been making astrology apps for 2019 years, operated by a Latvian company), released a paid version of the same kind of app, "Hunter - Driving Cancellations," in September 21, which monitors cancelled slots and has in-app purchases. It has only been live for about a month and a half with 11 ratings, yet 11-06 it already ranks #167 in the UK Productivity Top Grossing chart.

Most likely play: SlotSwap is free to grow the user base, Hunter is the paid monetization layer (inferred). One SlotSwap App Store one-star review, 9-24, reads "I paid £9 for the cancellation check and now I have to pay again," which suggests the app likely already has a paid cancellation-alert entry point or referral (inferred; I haven't confirmed where it sits). There's a contradiction here: SlotSwap's own blog tells learners not to use "banned cancellation tools," while the same company is selling cancellation alerts.

Its weak spot: when the pool is too small, you can't get matched

The health of this business depends entirely on the pool. Nearly all the negative App Store reviews say the same thing:

  • "The app is good, but there aren't enough people on it, I can't swap, I'm still waiting." (11-03, 3 star)
  • "Used it for two months and never managed a single swap." (9-25, 4 star)
  • "Used it for a month, nothing, not even a notification." (Trustpilot, 10-01)

The positive reviews say the opposite: "Matched within 10 minutes of downloading" (App Store, 10-11), "Swapped within 30 minutes of signing up" (Trustpilot, 10-14). The difference is probably the test center and date: people with unpopular centers and dates can't get matched, while people with popular centers match quickly (inferred). The bigger the pool, the fewer the bad reviews, and this is what makes it hardest for latecomers to catch up.

If it were you

C: worth learning from, but not worth chasing. The UK segment already has a clear leader, network effects are locking in its lead, and a string of web competitors and copycat apps trail behind. The whole business is also built on DVSA's rules, and if the rules change, it's gone. What's worth taking away is the playbook: policy-driven demand for "finding the right match" + having people users already trust (here, instructors) vouch for you + growing the two-sided pool for free + monetizing with a paid product alongside.

  • Who it suits: small teams that can build two-sided marketplace products and land vertical KOLs, watching markets where regulators have cleared out intermediaries and left individuals a single peer-to-peer channel. Look for the same shape of demand in other countries or other fields: test slots, visa biometric appointments, hospital specialist appointments, public housing swaps, school place swaps. Anywhere the rule says "only the person themselves can do it, but two people may swap," the same gap exists.
  • Who it doesn't suit: anyone thinking of building another test-swap app in the UK. The features are identical, you won't have the tens of thousands of listings it has already accumulated, and you won't have instructors vouching for you. It's also a bad fit if you want to charge for matchmaking itself: free is the entry price for this category.
  • How to do it: first confirm the target market's rules actually allow peer-to-peer swaps and that the official body doesn't run matching. Build the product so that it goes "listing → automatic matching → notification → exchange contact details only after both sides agree," and never touch users' official accounts. One to two months before launch, start a short-video account teaching tips in the field to build an audience.
  • How to acquire users: find practitioners in the field whom users already trust, from local accounts with a few thousand followers to big accounts with hundreds of thousands, and have them appear on camera saying "this is legal and safe." Fill the pool in one city or one busy location first, then expand outward. Don't try to cover the whole country from day one.
  • When to be early: the window for this kind of opportunity is the first few months after a rule takes effect. SlotSwap launched 3 months after the new rule came into force, which is no longer early, so its advantage comes from execution on promotion. If you find the next similar policy change, aim to launch within one to two months either side of the rule taking effect.
  • Signs you've got it wrong: ① DVSA itself starts matching people or restricts swaps, and SlotSwap's rating growth stalls; ② over the next two months SlotSwap's rating growth falls back to single digits per week while web sites like TestSwap and drivingtests.co.uk catch up, suggesting the app-plus-instructor model isn't that valuable; ③ conversely, if someone in the UK uses the same "instructor influencers + app" playbook and gets to a few hundred ratings within weeks, the UK segment isn't locked up yet, and I underestimated it.

SlotSwap: UK Driving Test Swap (iOS id 6781663712), why it made the list

Research date 2026-11-06. Storefront checked: UK (gb, the only storefront where it charted). Data comes from our appstore / googleplay / metaads libraries, Apple lookup, TikHub (TikTok), and Jina / Brave search; sources are noted after each item.

One line

It is a matchmaking app where UK learner drivers swap DVSA road test slots with each other. Over 2026 years DVSA issued several new rules that effectively shut down the bot-grabbing and proxy-booking business, leaving learner-to-learner swaps as the only compliant way to get an earlier test. SlotSwap wasn't the first to try, but it was the first to seriously combine a native app with a large-scale TikTok promotion by driving instructors (ADIs). Being completely free and running matches every 5 minutes won it its first users, and because two-sided matching gets better the more people use it, the user base kept growing. The developer, ALDEMA, is a small app studio that started with astrology apps (operated by the Latvian company SIA "GBP Labs"); in September it released a paid similar product, "Hunter - Driving Cancellations," and the money most likely comes back from there (unverified).

1. Data: how big it is now

  • App Store (GB): launched 2026-08-10, and by 11-06 it has 373 ratings (on 11-06 the Apple lookup showed 376, averaging 4.48). From 10-28 to 11-06, over these 9 days, it added 38 ratings, 7 days to 32, and 11-06 alone added 10, so it's still speeding up. It ranks #77–135 on the UK Productivity Top Free chart, and 11-06 sits at #78 (source: appstore library, app_day).
  • Among iOS apps in this category its rating count is far ahead: Zwitch Driving Test Swap UK (listed 2026-02) has 50 ratings; Driving Test Cancellation 4All has 47; Lets Swap Tests has 2; UK Driving Test Swap (Softdrive, listed 2024 years ago) has 4 (source: appstore DB app/app_snapshot, GB).
  • Google Play: uk.driving.test.swap, 4.8 stars, 34 reviews (Play page, 11-06). It's not in our Play chart database, so there are no install numbers.
  • The website claims: 42k+ sign-ups, 18.5k+ active listings, covering 353 test centres (slotswap.co.uk homepage, 11-06). These numbers are unverified.
  • Trustpilot: 9 reviews, rated 4.0. Positive reviews include "swapped in 30 minutes after signing up" (10-14), "matched in 1 days" (8-29), "2 days" (8-24), and one saying "the only service that got me a swap after signing up everywhere, within 3 days" (10-27). A negative review says "a month of use and not a single match" (10-01) (source: uk.trustpilot.com/review/slotswap.co.uk).

2. Background: why now (timing / platform events)

  • From 2026-03-31: each test slot can only be changed 2 times (DVSA LinkedIn / gov.uk). Grabbing cancelled slots got more expensive, so "swap it and it's done" became worth more.
  • From 2026-05-12: by law only the learner can book, change, or cancel a driving test. Instructors, booking sites, and bots are all banned (gov.uk "Changes to driving test booking rules in 2026", BBC "Driving tests 'more available' after rule change"). The services that used to charge to snipe cancellations were suddenly gone.
  • From Jun 9: you can only move to one of the nearest 3 test centres to your original one (BBC).
  • gov.uk's guidance on swapping slots: two learners swapping existing slots is officially allowed, but they have to find each other. DVSA only handles the phone confirmation and doesn't help match people. From 2026-10-01, each person just makes one call on the day, no more needing to call at the same time (gov.uk guidance, Swappy page, TikTok @drivingtesttipsclaire 9-29 video).
  • The result: people waiting for tests still face queues of dozens of weeks, and the only official fast track left requires first finding a partner. That matching need was created by policy. Industry outlet John Cordell (2026-04-13) wrote "Driving test swap apps surge despite DVSA crackdown", reporting that swap platforms sprang up in droves within weeks of the new rules.

3. Competitors: who else does the same thing

The space is crowded, almost all launched in the last 2026 years, mostly web-only, free or "free during launch":

Takeaway: the matching model has no moat, and SlotSwap isn't the first. What sets it apart isn't features but distribution and execution: a native app (push, one-tap accept in Telegram, in-app chat), fully free, scanning more often, and most importantly, a batch of instructor creators bought in.

4. Growth tactics: where users come from

  1. Driving instructor (ADI) creator promotion on TikTok (confirmed, the main source). Searching TikHub for "slotswap" and "driving test swap" turns up:
    • @leealbondrivingschool (226k followers, a 17-year instructor): posted "Give @Slot Swap a try…" on 8-18 (day 8 after launch), 292k views, 14.9k likes; then on 9-30 "@Slot Swap is working!!", 248k views, 19k likes.
    • @drivingtesttipsclaire (47k followers, instructor): posted a video tagged "#ad" on 11-03; @learn.with.paul (5k followers): posted a video tagged "AD" on 10-29; @shambostan (6k followers): 11-01, 23.5k views; @drivewithvee (9-02); @nationdriveuk (56k followers, ex-examiner turned instructor): 11-05 "slot swap new features", also reposted to his own Facebook group "Early driving test booking, cancellations and swaps in Uk".
    • The approach: they targeted instructors learners already trust, from 220k-follower accounts down to local instructors with a few thousand followers, and the push kept ramping up (several posts in a row from late October into early November). The content is the instructor on camera saying "swapping this way is legal", hitting learners' biggest fears about the new rules: breaking them or getting scammed.
  2. Own TikTok account @slot.swap (confirmed): 2,342 followers, 42 videos, 18k likes in total. No face, posts Highway Code tips ending with "Test date too far away — swap it". One video has 7-06 with 154k views, another 10-26 with 140k views. The account was posting in July, before the app launched, suggesting they built an audience on TikTok first and then released the app.
  3. SEO / content site (confirmed, modest results): the website has pass-rate pages for each test centre, city-based centre pages, and wait-time pages. The blog started in June ("Hardest / easiest test centres in the UK"), and they've had an ADI write articles under their name. But on Brave (GB), searching "driving test swap / swap driving test" doesn't put it in the top 10; TestSwap, drivingtests.co.uk, and DriveSoon rank ahead. Only "find someone to swap driving test" gets it to #7. So web SEO isn't why it's ahead.
  4. Facebook local and learner groups (confirmed as being discussed): in the newdriversuk group someone asked "is SlotSwap legit?", and posts appeared in local groups like Baillieston. It's unclear whether users posted these on their own or someone seeded them.
  5. Reddit r/LearnerDriverUK (confirmed as being discussed): several threads titled "Slot swap app", "Slotswap app", "have you guys seen this app?". The discussion is about whether it's legal, and replies mostly say "it's just matching, it's legal".
  6. App Store search (inferred): few apps on the UK iOS store do "driving test swap", SlotSwap has the most ratings, and its name includes the keyword "UK Driving Test Swap", so store search traffic is most likely going to it. The website's App Store links carry pt/ct parameters for source tracking. The iTunes search API was rate-limited that day, so its ranking is unverified.
  7. Paid ads: no SlotSwap advertiser appears in the metaads library (the library only tracks a keyword watchlist, so absence doesn't mean no spend). No evidence either way.
  8. Media / X: x-radar shows 90 posts mentioning "slotswap" in the last 0 days; no press coverage specifically about it was found.

5. Why it took off

  • Policy created the demand and cleared out the old rivals: the 5-12 rules ban third-party booking and, from 3-31, limit changes to 2 per slot. The only compliant way left for learners to speed up is swapping with someone else, and DVSA won't help find a partner (gov.uk).
  • Two-sided network effects, with the hardest cold start cracked by creator promotion: a swap needs the same test centre area, the same test type, and two people who each want the other's date, so the bigger the pool, the easier to match. Lee Albon's two videos add up to 540k views, people flooded in, match rates rose, and Trustpilot filled with "other sites couldn't match me, this one did" (10-27), which in turn brought more people.
  • Free, with no safety worries: no DVSA account needed, doesn't touch test slots, and slot numbers are encrypted until both sides agree (website). This addresses two learner concerns: fear of breaking the law and fear of scams (the £182 scam posts on Reddit). Rivals either charge only on success (drivingtests) or on a monthly subscription (Swappy).
  • Native app and push notifications: matching depends on knowing the moment a chance appears and accepting within 24 hours. App push plus one-tap accept in Telegram works better than the email-only web rivals. iOS has almost no competing swap apps, and its rating count is more than 7× the runner-up's (appstore DB).
  • An experienced app team executing: ALDEMA has had a horoscope app for 2019 years (1,822 ratings). July: opened the TikTok account; August: app launched; September: added chat; October: added Telegram. The cadence is fast.

6. Differentiation, and is that why it took off?

The mechanics and features (list a slot, auto-match, both people call in) are almost identical everywhere. TestSwap even has encrypted slot numbers and private matching rooms. What's actually different about SlotSwap comes down to three things: (1) it's completely free, and it says so plainly: "No catch"; (2) it ships a native app, Telegram and in-site chat, which makes matching faster; (3) it bought trust from instructors with a following. The 3rd point is the main reason it took off: during the same period, competing web products had better SEO, yet none of them earned the same word of mouth. The feature differences are secondary. What actually locks in the lead is the network effect: a bigger pool means faster matches.

7. Where the money comes back (speculation)

  • SlotSwap itself charges nothing (homepage: "£0 · No catch").
  • Same developer 2026-09-21 also shipped "Hunter - Driving Cancellations": cancellation alerts for driving test slots, with an in-app Premium subscription and terms hosted at driving-test-cancellations.co.uk. It has only 11 ratings so far, but 11-06 already hit #167 on the UK Productivity Top Grossing chart (appstore library). Our guess: they use the free SlotSwap to build users, then monetize with the paid Hunter, or cross-promote between the two. We have not verified whether SlotSwap's app pushes users to Hunter. Also, SlotSwap's own blog tells people not to use "banned cancellation tools," while the same company sells cancellation alerts. That's a contradiction worth noting here.
  • Other possibilities: charging for swaps later, selling test-centre data, or sending referrals to driving schools. I haven't seen evidence of any of these.

8. How many people know about it / follow the trend

  • No revenue is public. There's no TrustMRR listing, the founder isn't identified, it has 0 posts on X, and I found no press coverage specifically about it. Its audience is mainly the UK learner-driving world: TikTok instructors, Reddit r/LearnerDriverUK, Facebook learner groups. I'd call it "talked about in a small circle."
  • Copycats: the iOS follow-ups include "Tip Slot Swap" (WebStacked.co.uk, 2026-10-14, a near copy of the name) and "UK Test Swap" (Rengen Holdings, 2026-10-16), both rated 0. DriveSoon also uses the "Free during launch" play. The category is already crowded, but I haven't seen anyone copy the "instructor influencers + app" combination at any real scale.

9. Risks and open questions

  • Policy risk: if the DVSA changes the rules again (say, it runs swaps itself or restricts them), this path closes.
  • The website's 42k registrations / 18.5k listings are self-reported and I couldn't verify them. I can't tell whether the ratings were solicited.
  • I don't know whether the influencer promotion was paid or done as barter, or how much money went into it. Only drivingtesttipsclaire and learn.with.paul are labelled as ads; Lee Albon isn't.
  • I didn't verify whether Hunter and SlotSwap send traffic to each other, or what Hunter actually earns.
  • I couldn't check App Store keyword rankings (the iTunes search endpoint was rate-limited).
