¥6 plus an ID card: how a solo developer's "women-only" app was pushed into existence by the comment section
What it is A community and life-tool app for adult women only (period tracking, wardrobe, fridge, expense logging, etc.). Verification requires photographing an ID card to confirm gender. Costs ¥6 to download, with a VIP subscription on top.
Why it took off Xiaohongshu was pulling in male users and female users were annoyed. The developer talked on Douyin about "I built a women-only app by myself," and the comments demanded real-name verification and face scans. He went along with it. Users felt the barrier was their own demand, so they were willing to hand over an ID card and pay ¥6, and the people who pre-signed-up paid together on launch day.
BHow you could follow it Don't build a second all-women community in mainland China. Instead, move the formula ("build an audience through development logs + turn comment-section demands into admission rules + add a hard gate and a small payment to filter people + sell tool subscriptions") to groups like new mothers, a certain profession, or patients who want a clean space. The unbuilt Android version and a stable registration flow are also open gaps.

"Hao Nü Zi" (好女子) is a community-plus-life-tools app open only to women 18 and over. Signing up requires an in-person ID photo, and downloading requires a ¥6 payment. It only went live on the China App Store in October 17 of 2026, and by November 6 had 96 ratings in total, ranking #5 in Paid Social. It's tiny, but the path it took is the interesting part: the developer filmed "what I'm building" on Douyin, took rules straight from the comment section, built them into the product, and then used those rules as selling points.
A video posted just after midnight on Jul 9
Around ten past midnight on Jul 2026 9, the Douyin account "Hao Jiandan (Haonüzi app)" posted a video titled "I built an app just for women, by myself." The caption was plain: "Haonüzi is in a small-scale beta on iPhone, with a digital wardrobe, outfit logs, a diary, period tracking, favorites, community, and a 'tree hole' confessional. Which feature do you most want to try first?"
By Nov 6 the video had 124k likes, 7,094 comments, and 19.5k shares (Douyin, 11-06). The account that posted it had just over 20k followers at the time.
The comments barely talked about the wardrobe or the diary. They talked about "how to keep men out." The top comment, with 32k likes: "If someone posts suggestive content, or content that pushes cosmetic surgery to create anxiety, or ads, it should be blocked from posting or sent to manual review." Further down: "Can we add face recognition?" (1,632 likes), "Exactly, get rid of Xiaohongshu!" (1,478 likes), "Require real-name verification plus random face checks" (603 likes). One user wrote something specific: she posted on Douyin "my chest hurts during my period," and men came in to make dirty jokes; another casually posted that she wanted chicken wraps, and a pile of middle-aged men below wrote disgusting comments.
Two more comments are worth noting: "I used something similar before, Firefly Circle... the team ran out of money and shut it down" and "There was a similar app before, Shero, it's gone." An all-women community is not a new idea. Others have tried it, and none survived.
What it is
In one line: a women's version of "favorites folder + experience community + a pile of personal tools," with an ID-checking guard standing at the door.
- Gate: phone number plus a photo of the front of your ID card taken on the spot (you can't pick it from the camera roll). Gender is determined from the sequence code in the ID number. One ID, one account. Anyone under 18 can't register. New users get a 7-day observation period (user agreement version 3.7 on the official site, effective 10-05).
- Paid: ¥6 one-time download. There are also monthly and annual VIP subscriptions that unlock the digital wardrobe, bookshelf, medicine cabinet, digital fridge, expense ledger, diary, and unlimited favorites.
- Free tier: period tracking, to-do lists, workout logs, check-in groups, anonymous tree hole, community. Up to 6 favorites folders, each holding 50 items (App Store description).
- The original pitch: the first video in Jun 14 was about "gathering all the good posts from across the internet in one place." You could save links from Douyin, Xiaohongshu, Bilibili, Zhihu, and Douban, and everyone could rate the folder as "credible / partly credible / needs verification."
It's built by a solo developer in Xi'an. The seller on the App Store is "Xi'an Xichen Network Technology Co., Ltd," which has only this one app.
Why now
The timing is telling. In 2026, Xiaohongshu openly courted male users: the male share hit roughly 28% in May, and it spent about 1B on World Cup broadcasts (36 36Kr, Huxiu, 2026-06). The Jul 9 video landed right in the middle of the World Cup, and the comments calling it 「小红叔」 and 「点子混进来」 capture exactly that mood.
After that, it got three things right:
- It built what the comments asked for. Under the July video, people demanded real names, face checks, and moderation of suggestive content and ads. By the user agreement effective 5 Oct, ID photo verification, the female sequence code, and one-ID-one-account were all in place. The barrier was something users had asked for, so they were willing to hand over their ID cards and pay ¥6. A Xiaohongshu user wrote: "6r feels worth it. The barrier filters out the wrong crowd, and the atmosphere is great."
- It told the story as "I did this alone." The second viral post, on Sep 26, was titled "I disappeared for a month and finally submitted Haonüzi for review." It had 119k likes and 22k shares (Douyin, 11-06). The caption also casually asked "any sisters who are good at editing and willing to help?" Two accounts with a combined 30-some thousand followers produced two posts with 100k-plus likes. The subject matter did the work, not the audience. Shares were roughly a fifth to a sixth of likes, which suggests people passed it along one by one.
- It gathered people five months ahead and let them pour in on launch day. June preview, July beta, and in Oct 7 the official site posted an App Store pre-order link, with launch on Oct 17. Comments under the launch-preview video said "pre-ordered," "bought it seriously," "is it launching on my birthday?" The paid social category had little competition to begin with (the top apps on the same chart were dating tools like "Huapi" and "Daole ma"), so a batch of people paying on the same day was enough to push it into the top 5.
I found no evidence of paid acquisition, App Store search optimization, creator partnerships, or media coverage.

Apple doesn't publish downloads or revenue. Going by rating count and chart position, paid downloads are probably in the low thousands (estimate).
The problems are also obvious. On launch day, a batch of people didn't receive verification codes, and ID recognition failed. After 1.0.3 / 1.0.4 added a "check whether the app was purchased" step, some people who had already paid couldn't get in. In Nov 1 App Store reviews, someone wrote: "I've tried every verification method... is this a scam to collect information?" The developer handled it by messaging people one by one. One comment reads: "DM the developer; they fixed it and even gave a free month of membership."
There was controversy too. In Oct 8, the developer posted a video rebutting a comment that used "new mom" as an insult (3,916 likes). In Oct 23, a complaint account posted "Is this 'leek' being harvested too easily?" (3,610 likes). The comment section said "anything women-only always costs more," and the top comment was "One second we're discussing the issue, the next someone's dug up your own problems." Posts from the community were screenshotted and passed around (inferred; I didn't see the video content). Someone also raised the core concern: "What if someone registers with other people's ID cards? Isn't that just as dangerous?"
Who it's competing with
| Product | Scale | How it differs |
|---|---|---|
| Xiaohongshu | China store 21.2M ratings | The place users wanted to escape is still paying to pull in men |
| Meiyou | 3.09M ratings | Period tracker plus community, open to all genders; reviews complain the posts are a mess |
| Tā Shequ / Tā Pai | Once claimed tens of millions of users | Ran a pure women-only community, then switched to emotional short videos; no ID verification |
| Firefly Circle, Shero | Shut down | Predecessor: an all-women community that required real name plus ID verification, and neither survived |
| LesPark / the L | about 20k ratings each | Women's dating; Haonvzi users say outright they don't want it turned into a lesbian app |
| Huiying App | 29k fans on Douyin | Women's confessional space, no gender hard verification |
Since June 2025, no new App on the China store with names containing "all-women" or "pure women" has been listed; search "all-women app" on Douyin and only it comes up. No copycats yet.
If it were you
One-line take: don't build a second Haonvzi on the China store by copying its playbook. Build it for a different crowd that wants a clean space. Its moat is half "the strictest gate" and half its founder fronting the camera; a copycat only gets the first half and carries the reputation of "cashing in on a trend."
Who it suits: indie devs who are members of a specific group themselves and are willing to keep showing their face on Douyin and Xiaohongshu, documenting the build; people who can make sign-up, real-name checks, and in-app purchase verification solid.
Who it doesn't suit: people who won't appear on camera and just want to code heads-down; people who can't handle ID photo storage and personal data protection compliance; people expecting the community itself to make big money (its revenue comes from ¥6 downloads and tool subscriptions; the community just filters and retains people).
How to do it:
- Pick the audience first. Criteria: they're annoyed by being bothered on the big platforms, one hard condition can verify membership, and they'll pay a little for "clean." Candidates: new moms, a profession (nurses, lawyers, women programmers), patients with a specific illness, candidates for a specific exam.
- Copy its product structure: one hard gate (ID, practice license, student card, medical record), a small paid download as a second filter, and a pile of "personal tools" outside the community to fund subscriptions.
- Where it falls short is also an opening: an Android version (reviews are full of "waiting for Android" and "begging for Android"; it's iOS only), stability of registration and purchase verification, and preventing screenshots from leaking out.
How to get users: follow its rhythm. Start filming dev logs three to five months before launch, ask in each video "what do you want most," turn the most-liked comments into rules, then post "I built what you asked for." Open App Store pre-orders before launch so the people who've gathered pay on the same day, aiming for a low-barrier paid category chart.
When to move earlier: follow the emotion. The "escape the mixed platforms" mood was amplified in 2026 when Xiaohongshu pulled in male users. This kind of mood changes its topic every year or two, so claiming the spot early is better.
What would show you misread it: three months in, Haonvzi's ratings stall at a hundred or two hundred and it drops past #200 on the paid chart; an ID photo or post screenshot leak happens (the US all-women dating safety App Tea leaked ID photos 2025 years ago); or Xiaohongshu or Douyin launch their own "women-only visible" community. Any one of these narrows this path.
Data as of 2026-11-06. Downloads and revenue aren't public; the scale figures in this piece are estimates.

Why Haonvzi (iOS id6781949759) managed to break out
Research date 2026-11-06. Data comes from our appstore database (cn store, from 2026-10-28), App Store lookup, the official site haonvzi.cn, and Douyin and Xiaohongshu data scraped via TikHub. Listed on the China store only.
One line
"Haonüzi" (好女子) is a solo indie project from Xi'an, run by a developer on Douyin as "好煎蛋". It's a community plus lifestyle-tools app for women aged 18 and up only: sign-up requires a photo of your ID card, which is checked against the gender digit in the ID number. It's a paid download at ¥6, with a VIP subscription on top. It took off because the developer posted build-log videos on Douyin, like "I built an app just for women by myself," and two of them got roughly 120k likes each. The timing helped too: Xiaohongshu spent about ¥1B in 2026 on the World Cup to bring in male users, and women were unhappy about it. The features themselves aren't new. What sets it apart is the strictest possible entry barrier (ID-verified gender plus a paid download), and the founder fronting the product personally.

Very small: under 100 ratings, hovering around #100 on the overall paid chart. The China store's paid social category has little competition; the top few on the same chart are dating tools like "Huadi" and "Daole Ma." Apple doesn't publish download or revenue figures; it's only possible to say it's in the range of a few thousand paid downloads (unverified).
2. Competitors
| Product | Where | Launched | Scale (cn store ratings, App Store library) | How it differs from Haonvzi |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Xiaohongshu | iOS / Android | 2013 | 21.2M | It's exactly where users want to escape. 2026 May: men were about 28% of users. It spent about $1B on World Cup broadcast rights to draw in male users (36 36Kr, Huxiu, Sina Finance 2026-06). The comments on Haonvzi kept repeating: "Take down Uncle Xiao Hong" and "Don't be like 🍠, where everyone's ideas just get copied into signups." |
| Meiyou | iOS / Android | 2013 | 3.09M | A period tracker plus women's community; biggest by volume, but no gender restriction. Comments complain "I can't stand Meiyou's messy posts" and "don't follow Meiyou's path" |
| Tā Shequ / Tā Pai | Android / iOS / mini program | 2010 era | Once claimed tens of millions of users | Also tried a "women-only community" first, then pivoted to emotions and short video, relying on paid acquisition and a mini program. No hardcore ID verification |
| Firefly Circle | Android / iOS | About 2020 | Gone | A "women gamers community" that also verifies women with real name plus ID card. A top-liked Douyin comment (754 likes) says it "died later" |
| Shero | — | — | Gone | A Douyin comment mentions "a similar app called Shero is already dead" (unverified) |
| LesPark / the L (Relate) | iOS / Android | 2016–2018 | 23k / 21k | Mostly women users, but positioned as queer women dating; Haonvzi users explicitly say "please don't turn it into a lesbian app" |
| Ta Shuo, Orange App, 4i Planet | iOS | 2019–2025 | 11k / 6466 / 912 | Women's-perspective dating or matchmaking, not a pure women's community |
| Jingluo, Tuji Yueji and other period apps | iOS | 2025 | Tuji 3096 | Only covers the period-tracking slice; Jingluo also got 2812 likes on Xiaohongshu with a "all-women team" story |
| Huiying App | iOS / Android | 2026-09-30 Revamped | Douyin account with 29k followers | A women's venting-tree-hole community (responding to Haonvzi), no hardcore gender verification |
| Features big platforms already have | — | — | — | Neither Xiaohongshu nor Douyin has a "women-only visible" community; WeChat groups and Douban women's groups are the substitutes |
Takeaway: "Women-only" communities have existed several times before (Ta community, Firefly Circle, Shero), and most died from cold start or men slipping in. Haonvzi didn't claim a new category; it did the strongest gender verification within this category.
3. Where users came from (growth tactics)
- The founder films dev logs on Douyin (main channel, confirmed). The developer's personal account "Hao Jiandan (Haonvzi app)" (Douyin ID haohaohaojiandan, 24.6k followers) and the brand account "Haonvzi app (officially launched 10.17)" (9756 followers) post videos in sync:
- 2026-06-14 "I made an app only girls can use, collecting all the good posts from across the web": 25k likes, 5485 shares
- 2026-07-09 "I alone made an app only for women users": 124k likes, 7094 comments, 26.5k saves, 19.5k shares
- 2026-07-20 "How far can a women-only app go": about 15k likes combined across both accounts
- 2026-09-26 "Gone for a month, I finally submitted Haonvzi for review": 119k likes, 4259 comments, 20k saves, 22k shares
- 2026-10-08 responding to the "new mom" mockery: 3916 likes; 2026-10-13 launch feature intro: 2837 likes (all pulled via the TikHub Douyin API on 2026-11-06.) The two accounts have over 30k followers combined, yet produced two 100k-like videos, showing the draw is the topic's emotion, not follower accumulation.
- Turning user demands into product features, then promoting them. Under videos 7-09 and 9-26, the most-liked comments almost all demand "real-name ID" and "face scan at every login": "must download and log in with an ID card showing female" has 29k likes, "want face scan at login" has 12.8k likes, "moderate suggestive, ad, and cosmetic-anxiety content" has 32k likes. The developer then wrote "ID card portrait-side photo verification + female sequence code + one ID per person" into the user agreement version 3.7 (effective 2026-10-05). Users feel the threshold is one they asked for, so they're willing to hand over their ID.
- Opened pre-orders first to gather demand (confirmed). From 10-07 the official site posted an App Store pre-order link; on launch day (10-16/17) a wave of reviews came in, some positive, but most were "can't receive the verification code" or "can't register".
- Support by DM and compensating users (confirmed). App Store reviews and Xiaohongshu both say "DM the developer, and they even gave a free month of membership"; the official Xiaohongshu account "Haonvzi app" (52 followers, IP in Shaanxi) replies to nearly every comment.
- The controversy itself drove traffic (partly confirmed). The account "Lüelüelüe Appreciation" 10-23 posted "Are these leeks too easy to harvest?", 3609 likes, comments discussing ¥6 and all-women (judging from search results it refers to Haonvzi; video content unverified). The developer 10-08 posted a video firing back that "new mom" was used as a mocking term; supporters wrote long App Store reviews saying "not sure whose cake this stepped on". The fight actually consolidated the core users.
- Not found: no evidence of paid acquisition, App Store search optimization, KOL partnerships, or media coverage; x-radar and Exa show no reporting at all. On Xiaohongshu users say "besides creators, I only found two posts", and there's almost no discussion off-platform.
4. Why it took off
- Timing: women are getting fed up with mixed-gender platforms. RedNote is openly courting male users in 2026 (men are about 28% of users, 1B spent on World Cup ads, 36 per 36Kr / Huxiu 2026-06), and Douyin comments are full of "Little Uncle Red", "the boys sneaking in", and women posting period content getting hit with dirty jokes. Haonüzi's 7-09 breakout hit landed right during the World Cup (6/11–7/19).
- A solo-developer story plus emotional resonance spreads well on Douyin. "I alone", "only for girls", "gone a month, finally submitted for review" are all indie-dev narratives, paired with a gender topic; shares run about 1/6 to 1/5 of likes, meaning it was forwarded.
- The paywall and ID check act as filters, making "clean" feel credible. A Xiaohongshu comment: "6r feels worth it, the threshold screens people out, the atmosphere is great". ¥6 plus ID verification blocks men and ad accounts trying to get in, and also becomes revenue.
- Gathered users five months in advance. Previewed on Douyin from June, internal testing in July, pre-orders in October; on launch day a crowd was ready to pay, pushing it into the top 5 of the paid social category.
5. What's the differentiation, and is it why it broke out?
- The strictest gender verification: photograph the ID's portrait side (in-person capture only, no album upload), judge women by the sequence code in the ID number, do ID-portrait matching, one ID per account, no registration under 18, and a 7-day observation period for new users. Similar products either only ask for name plus ID number (Firefly Circle) or have no verification. This is the main reason it took off: it's what users wanted, and the top-liked comments under the viral videos all ask for exactly this.
- Community plus lots of personal tools: cross-platform transfer of saved favorites (Douyin, Xiaohongshu, Bilibili, Zhihu, Douban), "credibility co-review", digital wardrobe, fridge, medicine cabinet, period tracking, expense tracking, hearing-impaired mode. These are there to justify VIP subscriptions; the features themselves aren't new (everyone has them). They didn't cause the traction; they just give ¥6 a reason to feel worth it, and they're the future revenue source.
- The founder runs it personally: the developer is the face of this women-oriented product, replying to every comment and arguing with haters in person. This is hard to copy and is also its biggest risk.
6. How many people have seen it
- Revenue isn't public, and no media or major X accounts have written about it (x-radar: 0 results for "Haonvzi"; Exa finds no coverage).
- Two 100k-like Douyin videos gave it some name recognition among women-oriented Douyin users; almost no discussion on Xiaohongshu, and no spread off-platform.
- Judged to be spreading within a niche circle: one women's interest circle on Douyin.
- Followers: since Kuli 2025-06, no new cn-store app with "all-women / women-only" in its name; searching "全女app" on Douyin returns only this one. No copycats seen yet.
7. What others can learn
- Film dev logs saying "what I'm building and who it's only for", turn comment-section demands into product rules, then use those rules as the selling point, making the "threshold users asked for".
- A niche community screens users twice, with a paid download plus an identity barrier; the threshold is both moat and revenue. The cost is low conversion and registration flows that are prone to failures.
- Pre-orders gather demand, and concentrated first-day downloads can push a paid category chart up (the cn paid-social bar is low).
- The same play could work for other groups who want "a pure space": new mothers, certain professions, patient communities.
8. Risks and unknowns
- Lots of registration and purchase-verification failures: on launch day many people couldn't get verification codes and ID recognition failed; after 1.0.3 / 1.0.4 added a "check App download and purchase" step, some older users couldn't get in (App Store reviews 10-30 to 11-01).
- Compliance: collecting ID photos, gating by gender, and topics involving gender and women's health carry high risk for review and personal-information protection; the US Tea App's 2025 leak of ID photos can serve as a warning (BBC Chinese).
- Carried by one person: built solo by the developer; predecessors like Firefly Circle and Shero didn't survive.
- Still unknown: actual downloads and revenue; VIP conversion rate; whether "free for seven days after launch" refers to a VIP trial or the app being free; the specifics of 10-23's "leek" video; the Android plan (the comments are full of "waiting for Android", and only iOS exists for now).
