# Get 21M people to find out which bear they are, then have them download the app to test their love life: へびべあとーく is the 16st 'LINE compatibility test', and one of the few that actually took off

**What it is** You import your chat history with a crush from LINE; it gives you both a compatibility score, a chat MBTI, and lets you talk through love troubles with a bear. Monetized via weekly subscription.

**Why it blew up** The developer, May, first launched a free '16 love bears' test webpage. One tweet got 21M views, and 1M people took the test within a week. After the app launched, they shut down the web test and made it app-only, bringing that audience in with zero paid acquisition.

**C** **How to follow it** Don't copy features, copy the order: first use a shareable character test to make a character go viral, then drop that character into a category that has already proven it can sell subscriptions, and move the test into the app as the entry point. Teams with a character or illustrator community have the best shot.

Grade C: it relied on a bear that had already gone viral and an illustrator's existing hundreds of thousands of followers, which followers can't replicate. The LINE compatibility test category is already crowded with a dozen similar apps, and big players have entered too. What's worth learning is the order of moves, not copying the product. Chatter in small circles

へびべあとーく is an app on the Japan store: you import your chat history with a crush from LINE, and it gives you both a compatibility score and tells each of you your 'chat MBTI'. At least 15 apps in Japan offer this kind of feature, and it launched half a year after the leaders. It worked not because of the features, but because of a bear that went viral on X in May. Features are easy to copy; this bear isn't.

### A tweet with 21M views

In May 2026 29, illustrator Yoseno Ranu posted a tweet. The company she works for, LOGRAY, had launched a 16-type romance test website, and people were asked to take the quiz and share it with #恋するへびべあ診断, to show off which bear they are. The tweet eventually got 27k retweets, 33k likes, and 21M views.

The test was simple: 20 questions, a minute or two. The MBTI's 16 types were swapped for 16 'heavy bears' (重いくまさん), meaning bears who love a bit too intensely, with lazy expressions and a hint of yandere. Each result came with an image, made for sharing. A week later, X's official trends page wrote: 'The 『恋するへびべあ診断』 is going massively viral, centered on VTubers': usage passed 1M in the first week, and Vspo!'s Kurumi Noa, Yoru Nonoka, and a hololive clip of Ririka all shared their results.

That VTuber circles caught fire first is unlikely to be coincidence. LOGRAY is a small company founded in 2023, whose main business is making chibi avatars and merch for VTubers; its website lists avatars made for 26 people. They were already in that circle. I found no evidence that VTubers were paid to share the images; it looks more like organic spread (inference).

### After the bear went viral, what app did they make

In Jul 27, LOGRAY listed へびべあとーく on the Japan App Store. It wasn't a 'bear test app' but a category someone else had already proven: LINE chat-history compatibility diagnosis.

It works in three steps: in LINE, use 'Send talk history' to export a chat as text, share it to the app, and choose which name is yours. It then scores four areas: who talks more, how many emojis and laughs, how fast replies come, and whether each cares about the other. It outputs a total score and a relationship type, like 'calm and relaxed' (安心まったり関係). There's also a chat MBTI, a monthly AI summary, AI suggestions for what to reply, and 'chat with a bear', where you vent your love troubles. The store page specifically notes: diagnoses are computed locally on your phone, and only some content is sent to Gemini after you consent.

This category was trained by めろとーく. めろとーく launched in Jan 2026, and by Nov 6 had 7,292 ratings in the Japan store, ranking between #69 and #88 on the Utilities Top Grossing chart (App Store Japan, 10-28 to 11-06). It drove installs through large numbers of #pr creator skits on TikTok, with the top single video reaching 1.74M views. The same developer also ran a string of sister apps on other topics, like ハラスメントーク, which measures 'harassment level' in chats.

So LOGRAY didn't have to prove that people would pay for this; the earlier apps already had. They just put their own bear on it.

### Shut the web page, send people to the app

The key step came in September. Around Sep 8, kuma-shindan.com could no longer be taken directly on the web; the homepage now read '恋するへびべあ診断は、アプリ版で!' ('The 恋するへびべあ診断 is now on the app!'), with three steps below: download へびべあとーく, open the 'Yomimono' tab, and tap '16 type diagnosis'.

The test that had gone viral became the app's entry point. Promotion afterward ran on their own accounts: on Aug 3, Yasero Rau quote-tweeted her May viral tweet to promote the app; on Aug 21, LOGRAY's CEO UZNo (226k followers on X, has published manga) tweeted the launch. The official account @heavybear_37, created only in May, now has 12.1k followers and keeps posting rankings like 'the bear with the strongest possessiveness' and 'the bear with the strongest jealousy', with the top post reaching 489k views, keeping the topic alive.

You can see this path in the reviews:

> I matched with the へびべあ diagnosis result, so I got curious and downloaded it. (9-09,4 stars)

> I already loved へびべあ, so I installed the app! (10-01,4 stars)

> I was a daydreamer bear! It's so cute and the content matched almost perfectly, I was surprised (10-03,5 stars)

TikTok is actually quiet: searching 'へびべあとーく' turns up almost no related videos, and searching 'へびべあ診断' shows only a few organic videos with a few thousand to 16k views (TikTok, 11-06). Compared with めろとーく, no paid acquisition is visible through public channels. Whether they ran Meta or Apple search ads can't be checked from outside.

### How big it is now

| | Metric | Sources |
|---|---|---|
| Launched | 2026-07-27, Japan store only | App Store |
| Rating | 292 in total, average 4.07 | App Store Japan, 11-06 |
| Last 7 days | 17 new, 1 to 8 per day, no acceleration | App Store Japan, 10-30 to 11-06 |
| Rank | Lifestyle Top Grossing #102 to #155, not on the overall chart | App Store Japan, 10-28 to 11-06 |
| Comparison: めろとーく | 7,292 ratings, 7 new in 69 days | App Store Japan, 11-06 |

Volume is modest. It has only 4% of めろとーく's ratings, yet it has stayed in the hundred-plus range on the Lifestyle Top Grossing chart. The charts are different categories with different thresholds, so they can't be compared directly, but it suggests revenue per download is substantial (inference).

On the other side, 1M web test completions produced only 292 ratings, a very low conversion. By the time the app launched, the late-May peak was two months past, and most people had already moved on. The web version had English, Korean, and Traditional Chinese versions, but the app only launched in the Japan store, so that overseas traffic went unused.

### Where the money comes from

Free to download, revenue from subscriptions, with aggressive pricing (App Store page):

| | Weekly | Monthly | Yearly |
|---|---|---|---|
| Premium | ¥500 | ¥980 | ¥5,000 |
| Premium+ | ¥980 | ¥1,980 | ¥12,800 |

The free version shows the compatibility score and relationship type; detailed data and the AI monthly summary require payment; 'chat with a bear' gives 1 free messages, Premium gets 30 per day, and Premium+ gets 200 per day.

Users pay, but they also complain. Roughly one in every three reviews is about money:

> Honestly, the free plan is too tight for students, just 1 messages is rough 😢 Couldn't we at least get 5 messages? (10-28,4 stars)

> The price is high, and I don't really see the value, yet it asks for money (10-26,3 star)

One person put it bluntly: "Feels about the same as asking ChatGPT. But the bear is cute, it's relaxing." (9-27,3 star). Another: "The app is basically the same as MeloTalk, and the way it works is nearly identical!" (9-01,3 star). Users can see that the features are close to MeloTalk, and the bear's cuteness is what carries the paywall. Two other reviews from August say importing chat history keeps throwing errors.

### Who it's competing with

| Product | Launched | Scale (App Store Japan store, 11-06) | How it differs |
|---|---|---|---|
| めろとーく | 2026-01 | 7,292 rating, Utilities Top Grossing #69–88 | The originator and the leader. Uses TikTok creator promos plus a string of clone apps, with no characters. |
| Harassment Talk and other clones | 2026-06 to 08 | 206 / 21 / 4 ratings | Made by the same developer as MeloTalk, just with a different theme. |
| RepliAI | 2026-01 | 30 rating, Lifestyle Top Grossing #174 | Its selling point is "Does the other person like you?" |
| Pakuritalk, Koishirube, Hanatalk, Crushy, Myakutako, and about ten more | 2026-02 to 08 | 0–48 ratings each | Me-too copycats with no traffic source. Most never took off. |
| Kokoro Link and other web versions | 2026 | Not verified | Analyzes both LINE and Instagram DMs |
| SUZU(DeNA) | 2026-10-25 | 4 rating | Just entered from a big company. Uses a 16-type personality test plus compatibility and doesn't read chat logs. |

Most of the similar products launched from 5 to August stalled at 0–30 ratings. Hebibe Talk has almost the same features as them. The difference is one thing: the others had to pay to buy traffic for the phrase "LINE compatibility diagnosis." Its users fell for the bear first, then went looking for the app. Without the May post, it would just be the 16rd product in this niche.

### If it were you

**C. You can learn from it, but copying it isn't worth it.** It took off because of a bear that had already gone viral in the VTuber scene, plus the artist who drew it already had hundreds of thousands of followers. Anyone following this path can't get those two things. The feature layer is already crowded with more than a dozen similar apps. If you copy a "LINE compatibility app," you'll just end up as the 17th product with 0 ratings.

**Who it suits:** small teams that already have a character, an illustrator, or a fanbase and are figuring out how to monetize. Illustration studios, people making merch and sticker packs, and anyone connected to the VTuber scene will get the most from this case.

**Who it doesn't suit:** indie devs with no character and no community who want to rely on organic App Store search. Also not for people who can't stand the flood of "too much paying" complaints.

**The sequence is what's worth learning:**

1. Start with a free, 20-question, character-based quiz on a web page, with results people can share. Make the character a kind of "social currency" people use to talk. This step earns nothing.

2. Once it catches on, don't make "the character's app." Pick a category that has already proven it makes money from weekly subscriptions (here, LINE chat analysis) and put the character inside it.

3. Move the web quiz into the app as the entry point, and leave the web page with only a "take it in the app" link.

4. Use secondary content like rankings and compatibility charts to release a new talking point every few days.

**Where it fell short, and where you could do better:** Move fast. Once the quiz takes off, ship the app right away instead of waiting two months while the hype fades. It made the web version in several languages, and the app launched in those same storefronts. KakaoTalk also lets you export chat logs, and LINE users in Korea and Taiwan have the same need. As far as I can see, nobody is combining a character with chat diagnosis there yet (my inference; I didn't check each local store). Don't use a paywall as steep as this one: giving away free conversations for the first 3 to 5 chats would make the ratings look much better.

**How to get users:** Cold start depends on your own network of creators sharing first. On X and TikTok, get users to post their result images with a hashtag. Buying traffic for the phrase "LINE compatibility diagnosis" is MeloTalk's playbook, and latecomers will struggle to match its cost.

**When to get in:** The "LINE compatibility diagnosis" category has already peaked. Big companies like DeNA entered as early as October. The real window is in character quizzes themselves: when a quiz goes viral, you need to catch it within the few weeks before the buzz fades.

**What would show this read was wrong:** If Hebibe Talk's ratings climb into the thousands and it breaks into the overall Top Grossing chart within six months, or if other studios following this same sequence also take off, that would mean "quiz-driven traffic plus a mature subscription category" is a repeatable path, not just luck with this one bear. In that case, character-led teams should look at option B or even A. On the other hand, if its ratings stay in the hundreds and its Top Grossing rank slowly drops out of 200, that means the buzz from a web quiz doesn't turn into long-term subscriptions, and character traffic only lasts for one spike.

Where users come from

- **Verified** **Own web viral quiz → X/VTuber spread** : 2026-05-29 Yonose Raura tweeted the launch, with 27k reposts, 33k likes, and 21M views. X's trending page showed "VTuber trending widely," with 1M uses in one week. Vspo! and hololive members posted their results.

- **Verified** **Web quiz shut down, forced into the app** : The kuma-shindan.com homepage now reads "Koi suru Hebibe Shindan is in the app version!" The quiz can only be taken in the app (xtep.tools 2026-09-17 article, current official site). A comment: "Hebibe Shindan… got curious, so I downloaded it."

- **Verified** **founder-owned X accounts** : UZNo, representing the team, has 226k followers and posted the launch 8-21; 夜瀬らう 8-03 quote-tweeted a hit post to promote it; the official @heavybear_37 account has 12.1k followers and keeps posting bear leaderboards

- **Verified** **Merch, offline exhibitions, LINE stickers** : 9/19–10/4 held the exhibition "Omoi kurai ga choudo ii ten" ("It's just right when it's a bit heavy"). Bear keychains, T-shirts, and plush pillows. A comment: "I already loved Hebibe, so I installed the app."

- Inferred **Paid acquisition / TikTok creators** : TikHub search turns up no app-related videos, only a few self-made quiz videos. Not covered by the ad library.

## Hebibe Talk | Talk Diagnosis (LOGRAY): Research Report

- App Store: [apps.apple.com/jp/app/id6782947577](https://apps.apple.com/jp/app/id6782947577) (listed only in the Japan store; the lookups for us/kr/tw returned 0 results, 2026-11-06 to check)

- Android: com.logray.heavybeartalk (AppBrain shows a 1.4.2 version, 2026-09-15 update; not in our googleplay library, install count unverified)

- Developer: LOGRAY Inc. (the seller name on the App Store is LOGRAY LLC). Founded in 2023-07, it does commissioned chibi (Q-style) character design, and also sells merch and LINE stickers for its own IP. Representative UZNo (@UZyuzu37, 226k X followers, author of the manga 親が再婚して急に妹ができた). Art director is illustrator Yonose Raura (@yoruse_).

- Launched 2026-07-27. Category: Lifestyle. Free download, subscription-based.

### Bottom line

It went viral first, and the app came later. 2026-05-29, LOGRAY first launched a free web quiz, "Koi suru Hebibe Shindan" (KUMA × 16 LOVE TYPES). It replaced MBTI with 16 "heavy bear" love types. The launch tweet got 21M views, and weekly uses passed 1M. It trended on X across the VTuber scene. At the end of July, they turned the same bear into a "LINE chat log compatibility diagnosis" app. Starting in September, the web quiz was shut down and replaced with "take it in the app," moving all web traffic into the app, then charging via weekly subscriptions (from ¥500/week). The app's features are nearly identical to products like MeloTalk. What really sets it apart is the bear that already went viral and the fans it brought with it.

### 1. Data (appstore library, jp)

| Date | Total ratings | Added that day | Lifestyle Top Grossing rank |
|---|---|---|---|
| 10-28 | 266 | – | 104 |
| 10-30 | 275 | 8 | 126 |
| 11-02 | 282 | 1 | 140 |
| 11-04 | 290 | 5 | 123 |
| 11-06 | 292 | 1 | 124 |

- In 102 days since launch, it has 292 ratings with an average of 4.07. In the last 7 days it added 17 ratings, about 1–8 per day. Growth is flat, not accelerating.

- It has stayed between 100 and 155 on Japan's Lifestyle Top Grossing chart and never made the overall chart.

- Pricing (App Store page): Premium ¥500/week, ¥980/month, ¥5,000/year. Premium+ ¥980/week, ¥1,980/month, ¥12,800/year. The free tier shows the compatibility score and relationship type. Detailed data, the AI monthly summary, and "chat with the bear" require payment (Premium: 30 messages per day; Premium+: 200 per day).

- Compared with the leader MeloTalk (Ryusei Okamoto, listed 2026-01-18): 7,292 ratings, 7 days +69, Utilities Top Grossing #69–88 (same library, same period). Hebibe Talk's rating count is 4% of MeloTalk's, yet its Top Grossing rank is only a few dozen places behind. The categories and thresholds differ, so they can't be compared directly, but it suggests each download brings in decent revenue. This point is an inference.

### 2. Competitors

LINE has a "Send chat history" feature that exports a chat as a txt file. "LINE compatibility analysis" apps built on that entry point have turned into a small niche in the Japan store in 2026:

| Product | Position | Launched | Scale (appstore DB 11-06, jp) | How it differs from へびべあとーく | |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| めろとーく | LINE相性分析 (Ryusei Okamoto) | iOS / Android / web merotalk.com | 2026-01-18 | 7,292 rating, 7 days +69, #80 in Utilities Top Grossing | Category pioneer and leader. Its playbook is a flood of #pr creator skits on TikTok (DM screenshots plus dating commentary, with single videos hitting up to 1.74M views). One developer runs a matrix of clones: ハラスメントーク (206 rating), ヤミトーク, みんとーく, ハラスメントークDM. No owned character IP. |
| ハラスメントーク (same developer) | iOS | 2026-06-16 | 206 rating | Same analysis engine with a different topic, testing "harassment-speech levels" | |
| パクリとーく | LINE相性分析 (Daisuke Majima) | iOS | 2026-02-17 | 48 rating | Names copied from めろとーく; pure copycat |
| RepliAI(KeiConsulting) | iOS | 2026-01-04 | 30 rating, Lifestyle Top Grossing #174 | Uses AI to judge whether the other person likes you. No IP. | |
| 恋しるべ / ハナトーク / Crushy / LoveCo / AskLog / ミャクタコ / みゃくる / スモンド / ごろとーく and others | iOS | 2026-05 to 08 | all rated between 0 and 28 | Copycat products that never took off | |
| IsTalk, はちみつ, Lトーーク | iOS | 2021 to 2024 | only a few dozen ratings | Older generation of LINE analysis tools, leaning toward stats and utility | |
| ココロリンク (cocorolink.jp), ペアトーク診断 for LINE | Web | 2026 | Not verified | Web version; analyzes both LINE and Instagram DMs | |
| SUZU(DeNA) | iOS | 2026-10-25 | 4 rating | Big company just entered, doing 16-type personality plus compatibility. Doesn't read chat logs. | |
| 16Personalities and various "animal 16 type" test sites | Web | Already around | Very large | Just personality tests, no chat analysis | |

Takeaway: the "read LINE logs to score compatibility" feature is already commoditized, with at least 15 apps doing it. へびべあとーく is a late entrant (about six months after めろとーく) and has no moat on features. Its only real differentiator is a character IP that already went viral, plus the traffic that came with it.

### 3. Growth tactics (evidence)

1. **Web test went viral first, then built an IP fanbase (confirmed)**
    - On 2026-05-29, Yoruse Ra'u posted on X that LOGRAY had launched a 16-type love test website and asked people to share their bear results with #恋するへびべあ診断. The post's numbers: 27k reposts, 33k likes, 21M views (x.com/yoruse_/status/2060301744576577552).
    - X's official trends page, "『恋するへびべあ診断』がVTuber中心に大流行" (2026-06-05/07), said usage passed 1M within a week. Vspo! members Kurumi Noa and Yugami Yui, and hololive's Ichinose Ririka, all shared their results. Related topics hit two trends, with 4K and 1.4K posts (x.com/i/trending/2062987554253570542).
    - Secondary spread followed: a YouTube stream segment (【MBTI診断】リスナーさん分類する!), a Shorts clip from Reiwa no Tora's Inaba Makoto, a note post titled "JKの間で流行っている", Instagram explainers, and third-party SEO blogs (xtep.tools, istep.click).
    - The official account @heavybear_37 was opened 2026-05 later and now has 12.1k followers. It keeps posting "○○べあランキング" rankings (possessiveness, jealousy, and so on), with 489k views per post, keeping the topic alive.
    - Why VTuber circles picked it up first: LOGRAY's core business is making chibi art and merch for VTubers (logray.jp/works/chibichara lists "26 name-based production credits", and logray.info sells VTuber illustration goods), so it already had connections in that scene. This is an inference: I found no evidence that VTubers were paid to promote it. It looks more like organic spread.

2. **Web traffic forced into the App (confirmed)**
    - App launched on 2026-07-27. On 8-03, Yoruse Ra'u quote-posted her own May viral post to promote the App. UZNo (226k followers) posted about the launch on 8-21, and the official lit.link page also carries the download link.
    - By 2026-09-08, kuma-shindan.com could no longer run the test directly on the web. The homepage now says "恋するへびべあ診断は、アプリ版で!" and tells users to download the App, then take the test from the よみもの page (see the xtep.tools article from 2026-09-17 and the current kuma-shindan.com page). The web version also had English, Korean, and Traditional Chinese versions, but the App is listed only in the Japan store, so overseas traffic goes to waste.
    - User reviews line up with this path: "I fit the 'へびべあ diagnosis' and that made me curious, so I downloaded it" (9-09); "I already liked へびべあ, so I installed the app" (10-01); "I downloaded it because I love the illustrator" (9-25); "I love the characters by れおなるど" (10-22).

3. **Offline events and merch feeding back (offline activity confirmed; contribution to downloads unverified)** : 9/19–10/4 it held the "重いくらいが丁度いい展" exhibition; 16 bear keychains are sold on noizu.shop, with overseas proxy buying accepted; and LINE stickers were made.

4. **TikTok and paid acquisition: none found** . A TikHub search for "へびべあとーく" turned up almost no related videos. A search for "へびべあ診断" returned only a few organic videos with a few thousand to 16k views. めろとーく is the opposite, with lots of #pr creator placements. I did not check the Meta or TikTok ad libraries (they only track products on their watchlist), so whether it ran ads is unknown. Based on public signals, it likely bought little or no paid traffic.

### 4. Why it took off

- **Traffic was owned, not bought** : a viral test with 21M views and 1M uses turned the bear into social currency for Gen Z and VTuber fans. The web test was later shut down and users were moved to the App, which migrated that audience at zero cost.

- **The test format is built for sharing** : MBTI is a framework everyone recognizes. Wrapping it in a cute yet slightly yandere bear persona, with a shareable image for each result, plus rankings and compatibility charts, means every user who posts their result is recruiting new users.

- **Borrowed a proven category with high willingness to pay** : めろとーく had already educated the market and proved the path of "upload LINE logs, get a score, push a subscription." LOGRAY did not have to validate demand; it just put IP on top. The App also includes 16-type tests so the test traffic has somewhere to land.

- **Aggressive pricing** : a weekly subscription plus AI chat capped by message count (1 free messages), so even with few ratings it has stayed in the Lifestyle Top Grossing chart around #100. The cost is many reviews complaining about "too many paywalled features" and "only 1 free messages," with an average rating of just 4.07.

### 5. Differentiation

- Feature-wise there is almost nothing new: four metrics, chat MBTI, a monthly AI summary, and AI reply suggestions. めろとーく and others have the same or very close equivalents. Its description stresses that "diagnosis runs on-device, and only partial content is sent to Gemini with consent," a small privacy selling point.

- The real differentiator is the IP: **users meet the bear before they meet the App** . Rivals have to buy traffic through TikTok #pr to sell the "LINE compatibility test" category term. This one relies on fans who come in through "which bear am I." Many 3-star reviews say "くまかわいいからいっか" (the bear is cute, so it's fine), where cuteness offsets resentment of the paywall.

- That differentiator is why it broke out. Without that May web hit, it would just be the 16th LINE compatibility App. Similar apps launched from 5 to August mostly have only 0–30 ratings.

### 6. How many people have seen it

- Revenue is not public. I found no TrustMRR record and no founder posting revenue. No media outlet or big X account has written about it as a money-making App.

- What gets discussed widely is the **web test** (X trends, VTubers, YouTube, note, SEO blogs). **The App's own monetization** is not discussed by anyone.

- Copycats: targeting the "bear 16-type test" are tfp-group.co.jp's "くまタイプ診断" (8 questions, riding SEO variants of "へびべあ/ベビベア") and 16test.uranaino.net's "animal 16-type" tests, all traffic-chasing web pages. The whole "LINE compatibility" category was already crowded with copycats, but I have not seen anyone copy the "IP plus chat diagnosis" combination.

### 7. What to borrow

- Two steps: first build a **free, 20-question, shareable** character-based MBTI web test that turns character affection into social currency; once it catches on, launch a subscription App and move the web test into the App as bait.

- Don't invent demand from scratch. Pick a category already proven to convert weekly subscriptions (LINE log diagnosis) and put your own IP on it.

- Cold-start within creator circles you have ties to (here, VTubers and illustrators), then keep generating topics through secondary content like rankings and compatibility charts.

- Lesson learned: the web version had English, Korean, and Traditional Chinese, but the App was listed only in the Japan store, so overseas traffic went unconverted. The paywall was too steep and dragged down ratings.

### 8. Still unclear

- Actual downloads and revenue. Android install counts not found (not in the googleplay DB).

- Whether those VTubers shared organically or under paid deals.

- Whether it ran Meta, TikTok, or Apple Search Ads (the ad libraries don't cover this).

- How many of the 1M web test uses converted to App downloads. With only 292 ratings, conversion looks very low. Most traffic seems to have dissipated during 5–June, and since the App only launched at the end of July, it missed the peak.

- How much of its Lifestyle Top Grossing rank comes from 16-type test fans versus organic search for "LINE log diagnosis" is impossible to separate.
