# A dev task list left in by accident: how a new going-global web novel app gets off the ground

**What it is** A Chinese team's English-language romance web novel reader and audiobook app, published through a Singapore company. Free to download; reading paid chapters requires buying coins.

**Why it's getting attention** In September a version wired up ad attribution, web-to-app handoff, top-ups, and a task system that trades coins for ratings. In late October it began running ads in five English-speaking countries and climbed into a low-barrier book chart. Volume is small compared with other new apps in the same window, and it hasn't broken out yet.

**D** **How you could approach it** Indie devs shouldn't copy this. If you want in, go after languages these apps don't cover, or build a model that doesn't rely on addictive per-chapter payments. Test ad payback with a landing page and a few books before building an app.

D grade: English web novels are already saturated, and following them requires a rights library, an ad team, and a budget to burn while losing money, which small teams don't have. Heartale hasn't proven it works, and its one differentiator, "read plus listen," has been done before. The only thing worth learning is the launch sequence for a new app. Almost nobody knows about it yet

Heartale sat in the store for three months with zero ratings until late October. Within a week it reached 68 ratings and charted in five English-speaking countries' book charts. Nobody discovered it organically. Its store page still contains a task list that spells out how the whole thing was built: a Singapore shell company, English romance web novels, per-chapter coin payments, web ads driving installs, and a "rate us" task.

### A task list that went into the release notes

2026 year Sep 16, Heartale shipped version 1.2.0. Normally the release note would just say "fixed some bugs," but this one pasted in a dev task list instead, one item per line, copied word for word:

> Integrate AppsFlyer SDK for attribution processing Support W2A, clipboard, and search attribution Optimize Top Up page, SKU expansion, and payment Complete task center entry and page status Complete positive review task and rating branch Add startup, interstitial, and end-of-chapter recommendation slots Integrate Shushu SDK and tracking

In plain terms: wire up ad attribution, support web-to-app and clipboard attribution, build the top-up page and coin tiers, build a task center, build a "rate us" task, add splash, interstitial, and end-of-chapter recommendation slots, then integrate Shuzhi analytics tracking. As of 11-06, that list is still in the US App Store version history.

Before that version, it looked like a different app. The Google Play listing described it as "We are a small team of literature enthusiasts," the data safety section said "No data collected," and the release notes still contained an untranslated Chinese template: "enter or paste the en-US release notes here." The privacy policy page on the official site had the web title "HTML Editor - LDDGO.NET," the name of a free online HTML editor (web, 11-06).

### What it is

An English romance and fantasy web novel reader with audiobooks. The official site heartale.vip is blunt about its hooks: "billionaire obsession / fated mates / royal scandals," the tropes that keep English web novel readers hooked.

Its stated differentiator is listening: audiobooks come in Daily, On the Go, and Sleeping modes, and sleep mode can layer rain, fireplace, and ocean waves. The copy is deliberately soft and upscale, avoiding the big Werewolf, Mafia, and Billionaire headlines common in the category.

Monetization is industry standard: free download, buy coins to read paid chapters. 500 coins for $4.99, 10000 coins for $99.99, 10 tiers total (US App Store, 11-06). Rated 17+.

The developer is ASLINE PTE. LTD., a Singapore company incorporated in February 2026, with this app as its only product. The company website is a generic "mobile product delivery" template. Combined with the Chinese template text on Google Play, the team is almost certainly based in mainland China (inferred). Version 1.3.0 (9-30) added Japanese and Brazilian Portuguese store listings, but as of 11-06 it hasn't charted in either market.

### Did it actually gain traction?

Total ratings across all countries (App Store, 11-06):

| Date | 10-31 | 11-01 | 11-02 | 11-03 | 11-04 | 11-05 | 11-06 |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Score | 0 | 2 | 6 | 13 | 32 | 49 | 68 |

The charts are moving too. The US Books Free chart went from #157 on 11-02 to #80 on 11-06, and the Books Top Grossing chart ranged between #119 and #147. The UK Books Free chart rose from #108 to #31, and 11-06 entered Books Top Grossing for the first time (#87). Australia, Canada, and New Zealand also charted. Appearing on both the free and grossing charts means people are paying.

But those charts have a low bar. New Zealand had zero ratings and still reached #30 on Books Free. Compared with peers in the same niche, its volume is small. New US ratings over the last 7 days (App Store, 11-06):

| App | Launched | New US ratings over the last 7 days |
|---|---|---|
| GoodNovel | 2020-04 | 1,108 |
| Inkitt Galatea | 2018-05 | 985 |
| Moonnova | 2026-08 | 223 |
| AlphaNovel | 2021-10 | 195 |
| NovelMist | 2026-05 | 159 |
| KissNovel | 2026-09 | 91 |
| StoryPort | 2026-03 | 53 |
| **Heartale** | 2026-07 | **38** |

Moonnova, another new app from this year, is growing 6 times faster, and NovelMist has already charted in 69 countries with a Top Grossing peak of #6. Heartale is only just starting to spend, and hasn't broken out yet.

### Where users come from

**Most likely paid acquisition.** The task list lines up with the standard going-global web novel playbook on Facebook and TikTok: an ad shows a climactic excerpt, the click opens a web page offering free chapters, and once readers are hooked, they're nudged to download the app. The clipboard carries the book ID so the app opens right where they left off, and reading continues into paid chapters. AppsFlyer tracks which ad drove each install. The rise started in late October across five English-speaking countries at once, which looks like ad spend switching on rather than word of mouth. Which platforms and how much were spent isn't publicly known (inferred).

**No organic traffic.** Searching "heartale" on TikTok returns a same-named short drama account and Undertale fan content. X shows zero discussion in the last 60 days, and there's no press coverage.

**Cross-promotion in the store.** The "You Might Also Like" section on the App Store page lists StoryNova, NovelVerse, NovelVault, and Novelhall, all new web novel apps from the same batch, passing a bit of traffic back and forth.

### Why the rating count is 4.9

US store average over 4.9,42 ratings (App Store, 11-06). Of 68 ratings across all stores, only one has written text: UK, 11-02,5 stars:

> I am enjoying this app so far. While relatively new to it, it basically does what it says on the tin 🤷🏽‍♀️

Lots of ratings, almost no text, average near perfect. That matches the task-list line "positive review task and rating branch": coins are handed out in the task center to get users to rate. Ratings are climbing fast, and part of that comes from this trade, so you can't use them as a download estimate (inference). Apple's rules explicitly forbid trading rewards for ratings, so this is a gray tactic.

### Who it's competing with

English web-novel going global is a mature business, and it's already crowded. 11-06 In the US store's Books Top Grossing chart, more than a dozen of the top 60 spots are web-novel apps built by Chinese teams.

| Product | Launched | US store ratings (11-06) | Compared with Heartale |
|---|---|---|---|
| Inkitt Galatea | 2018-05 | 303k | Already sells "Audio & eBooks" and immersive sound, so the features Heartale pitches were already there |
| GoodNovel | 2020-04 | 235k | The leader, with a much bigger library and paid acquisition |
| Dreame | 2018-08 | 171k | Long-running werewolf romance; same coin-per-chapter model |
| AlphaNovel | 2021-10 | 86k | Same genre, same model |
| Webnovel (China Literature) | 2017-05 | 48k | Big company, licensed library |
| Wehear | 2021-05 | 40k | Web fiction audiobooks only, closest to Heartale's "listen" |
| NovelMist / Moonnova / KissNovel / StoryPort and others | 2026 years | Hundreds to thousands | Batch-produced new apps using the same playbook |

Licensed audiobook subscriptions like Audible and Everand sell something different and don't compete for the same users as coin-based web fiction.

So "read plus listen, bedtime white noise" is not why it's growing: Galatea and Wehear had it long before, and the one review doesn't mention audio. The growth lines up with attribution, top-up, and rating-task launches, not with any new feature.

### What to learn from it

What's valuable here isn't the product but the release sequence. Anyone building an overseas content app can break it down this way:

1. **Ship a clean version to pass review first.** The 1.0 at the end of July is the "literary enthusiast small team", which collects no data and sells nothing.

2. **Wire up monetization all at once.** In September, 1.2.0 connected attribution, top-ups, ad slots, and the task center in one go.

3. **Use a web page to catch ad traffic.** Ads land on a web page where users read first, then the clipboard carries the book ID into the app to continue. Conversion is high for web fiction and short dramas, and this step is the key.

4. **Buy exposure in small English markets.** The book charts in New Zealand, Australia, and Canada have very low thresholds, so a small volume can reach the top 50.

### If it were you

**In one line** : don't follow it. This is one more batch-produced app, and it hasn't broken out yet. The category has a dozen peers with thousands of times its ratings.

**Who it fits** : companies already doing web fiction or short drama going global, with a licensed library and a paid acquisition team. For them this is a launch checklist to compare against, not a new opportunity.

**Who it doesn't fit** : indie developers and small teams. You likely lack the three things needed to scale: hundreds or thousands of serializable English web novels (written, translated, or licensed), an acquisition team that can calculate payback periods, and a budget to lose money on ads for several months. Changing the genre or the country doesn't remove these requirements.

**How to do it** : if you still want to try, don't build "another web fiction app." Find the part they haven't done well. For example, they all focus on English romance, so supply in Japanese, German, French, or Spanish may be much thinner (inference, not verified). They charge per chapter and deliberately build addiction, so readers who dislike that model may pay for a one-time purchase or subscription. Test paid traffic with a landing page and a few books first, and only build the app once payback is proven.

**How to acquire users** : in this space there is only one path, short video and feed ads. Turn the most gripping passage of a novel into creative, read on the web first, then jump into the app. Don't copy the review-rewards tactic. It violates Apple's rules, and if caught, both the app and the developer account can be pulled.

**Is there a window to get in before** : there is no window. The category is already mature, and it won't close just because you enter three months later.

**What would show you got it wrong** : by mid-December, if Heartale's new US ratings over the last 7 days exceed 200 and it holds a top spot in the bestseller chart at 60, while also expanding into Japan and Brazil, that would suggest the "read plus listen" packaging really does lower acquisition cost. Then its creative and landing pages are worth a closer look.

Where users come from

- Inference **Paid ads + W2A web landing + clipboard attribution** : 1.3.0 (2026-09-30) release notes, original text: Integrate AppsFlyer SDK… Support W2A, clipboard, and search attribution; late October, 5 English-speaking regions started growing at once

- **Confirmed** **Positive review task / incentivized ratings** : 1.3.0 states 'Complete positive review task and rating branch'; the average across 4.9,68 ratings has only 1 written reviews

- **Confirmed** **Exposure on small English-speaking book charts** : New Zealand 0 ratings also ranked #30 on the Books Free chart; au, nz, and gb all made the top 50 in Books

- Inference **Meta / Google / TikTok ad libraries** : none of our three ad libraries show it; its absence from the list doesn't mean it didn't spend

- Inference **TikTok / X organic content** : TikHub and x-radar search results show no relevant content

## Why Heartale-Books & Audiobooks (iOS 6783594986) was surfaced

> Research date 2026-11-06. Data sources: our appstore / googleplay / metaads / googleads / tiktokads libraries (agent-im server), App Store pages and version history, iTunes lookup and review RSS, heartale.vip, the Google Play page, Jina / Brave / Exa search, TikHub (TikTok), x-radar (X).

### Bottom line

Heartale is another app in the China-team playbook for overseas "web fiction apps": a Singapore shell company (registered 2026-02), English romance, werewolf, and CEO-romance web fiction, and a coin model charging per chapter (4.99–99.99 USD). No sign of organic traction. The rise that started in late October lines up with the 1.3.0 version (9-30), the first to bring in AppsFlyer attribution, W2A (web to app) and clipboard attribution, the top-up page, and the "positive review task." So its growth looks like paid traffic plus coins traded for ratings, not the product being discovered. In this category its volume is small (near 7 new US ratings over the last 38 days, versus 223 for Moonnova and 159 for NovelMist), so it hasn't broken out yet.

### 1. What it is

- English web fiction reading + audiobook app, genres romance, fantasy, and "emotional web fiction." The website pitches "billionaire obsession / fated mates / royal scandals" (https://heartale.vip/).

- A selling point Apple's listing shows that others don't: audiobooks come in three scene modes, "Daily / On the Go / Sleeping," and sleep mode can layer white noise such as rain, fireplace, and waves (App Store description).

- Business model: free download with in-app purchase in coins, 500 coins for $4.99, 10000 coins for $99.99, 10 SKUs in total (US App Store page). Terms of Service section 7 says premium chapters / coins. Age rating 18+.

- Developer ASLINE PTE. LTD., a Singapore company, registered 2026-02-02 (Tracxn). The company site aslinepte.com is a generic "mobile product delivery support / utility apps" template with only this app under it. The Google Play version (com.heartale.ebook) still has a Chinese placeholder in the release notes, "在此处输入或粘贴 en-US 语言的版本说明" (enter or paste the en-US release notes here). The dev team is almost certainly based in mainland China (inference).

- Versions: 1.0 (7-31) → 1.2.0 (9-16) → **1.3.0 (9-30)** → 1.3.1 (10-19). The release notes for 1.3.0 are the original dev task list, not cleaned up. They read: "Integrate AppsFlyer SDK for attribution processing; Support W2A, clipboard, and search attribution; Complete first version SKU…Top Up page…Wallet; Complete positive review task and rating branch; Add startup, interstitial, and end-of-chapter recommendation slots; Integrate Shushu SDK (ThinkingData)" (App Store version history, US page).

- The first two months (7-31 to 9-30) look like a "pass-review shell": the Play data safety section says "No data collected," and the release notes say "We are a small team of literature enthusiasts." The real monetization and acquisition modules weren't added until 1.3.0.

### 2. Growth data

Combined ratings across all stores (appstore library, app_day): 10-31 0 → 11-01 2 → 11-02 6 → 11-03 13 → 11-04 32 → 11-05 49 → 11-06 68.

| Store | Ratings (11-06) | Books Free chart | Books Top Grossing chart |
|---|---|---|---|
| us | 38 (11-02 first 0) | 157→129→105→87→80(11-02→11-06) | 147→133→140→119 |
| gb | 15 | 108→47→45→32→31→35 | 87 (11-06 first charted) |
| au | 6 | 125→74→70→40→43→52 | 102→120→118→128→175 |
| ca | 9 | 94→110→69→68→112 | 172→119→164→176 |
| nz | 0 | 190→162→78→49→34→30 | 72→110 |

- It only showed up in 5 English-speaking stores, plus Uganda for one day. Books Top Free and Top Grossing both charted it, so people are paying, but the volume is tiny. New Zealand had 0 ratings and still reached #30 on Books Top Free, which shows how low the charting bar is in these small stores.

- iTunes lookup (US store) averages 4.90 across 42 ratings, but **the entire visible range has only 1 written reviews** (gb, 11-02,5 stars). Many ratings, almost no written reviews, an average of 4.9. That matches the "positive review task and rating branch" (tasks or coins that reward rating) in 1.3.0. So part of the rating growth is incentivized and shouldn't be read as download volume (inference).

- Compared with peers (appstore library, US store, rating_velocity_7d, 11-06): GoodNovel 1108, Inkitt Galatea 985, Moonnova (launched 2026-08) 223, AlphaNovel 195, NovelMist (launched 2026-05) 159, KissNovel (launched 2026-09) 91, StoryPort 53, **Heartale 38** .

### 3. Where users come from

| Channel | Evidence | Confirmed? |
|---|---|---|
| Paid acquisition (Meta / TikTok / Google ads, W2A landing pages) | 1.3.0 integrates AppsFlyer, explicitly supports W2A, clipboard, and search attribution, and handles ATT. This whole setup is the standard stack for global web-novel apps running "novel clip ad → web page with the first few chapters → clipboard carries the book ID into the app to keep reading" on Facebook and TikTok. The rise began in late October and rose in 5 English-speaking stores at the same time. | Approach confirmed (from the code); specific ad platforms not verified |
| Our ad library | No heartale / ASLINE advertisers or creatives in the metaads and googleads libraries; not in the tiktokads or googleads lists either (it was never on those lists, so their absence doesn't mean it isn't advertising). | Unconfirmed |
| AppInsider model | Estimated sources: organic search 38%, browse 47%, paid 15%. This is a model estimate based on signals such as Google Ads Transparency (https://appinsider.io/app/heartale-books-audiobooks-6783594986). It also lists the app under "Breakout Radar #87". | Third-party estimate, low confidence |
| Good-review tasks / incentivized ratings | 1.3.0 release notes say "positive review task and rating branch"; 68 ratings have only 1 written reviews | Mechanism confirmed |
| TikTok / X organic content | TikHub searches for "heartale" and "heartale app" return only unrelated content: same-named short-drama accounts, Undertale fan works, etc. x-radar: 60 posts in the last 0 days. | Confirmed none |
| Store search / ASO | "Books & Audiobooks" is in the name, subtitle "Read Romance, Hear Every Heart". The App Store "You Might Also Like" links to StoryNova, NovelVerse, NovelVault, Novelhall and other similar web-novel apps. | Partial |

### 4. Competitors

Web novel going global is a red ocean. In the App Store library, there are a dozen-plus Chinese-owned web novel apps in the US store's Books Top Grossing top 60 out of 11-06. 2026 still keeps seeing new ones launch.

| Product | Where | Launched | Scale (US rating count / last 7 days, 11-06) | How it differs from Heartale |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| GoodNovel (SINGAPORE NEW READING) | iOS / Android | 2020-04 | 235,192 / +1,108 | Market leader, large library, heavy paid acquisition; Heartale adds a scene-based audiobook mode |
| Dreame(STARY) | iOS / Android | 2018-08 | 170,533 / +20 | Veteran werewolf romance app; same coin-per-chapter payment |
| Inkitt Galatea | iOS / Android | 2018-05 | 303,114 / +985 | Already positions itself as "Audio & eBooks"; it got to audio and immersive sound first, so Heartale's differentiator is already taken |
| AlphaNovel(Brailion) | iOS / Android | 2021-10 | 85,987 / +195 | Same genre, same model |
| Wehear(STAR READING) | iOS / Android | 2021-05 | 39,765 / +49 | Web fiction audiobooks only, closest to Heartale's "listen" |
| Webnovel (Cloudary / China Literature) | iOS / Android | 2017-05 | 48,443 | Big-company global expansion, large licensed library |
| NovelMist (individual developer named "晓东 王") | iOS | 2026-05-27 | 6,330 / +159; charted in 69 stores, best Books Top Grossing rank #6 | A new app from the same period; its store reach and volume far exceed Heartale's |
| Moonnova | iOS | 2026-08-24 | 515 / +223 | Same-period new app, growing about 6 times as fast as Heartale |
| KissNovel(HK Ruijiu) | iOS | 2026-09-14 | 455 / +91 | Same-period new app |
| StoryPort (developer named "志浩 卓") | iOS | 2026-03-29 | 415 / +53 | Same-period new app |
| VistaNovel, RedChapters, FrostRead, AmoraReads, StoryNova, NovelVerse, NovelVault and others | iOS | 2026-05~09 | Dozens to thousands | Batch-produced new apps using the same playbook |
| Audible / Everand / Audiobooks.com | iOS / Android | Long-established | Million-level | Licensed audiobook subscriptions; not the same user base as coin-based web-novel apps |
| Big-company features: Apple Books / Kindle audio | System / big companies | — | — | Doesn't do paid web-novel chapters |

### 5. Differentiation

- On paper, the difference is "reading + listening" in one app, with audiobooks sorted by scene and a bedtime mode layered with white noise. The brand voice is "gentle, premium," deliberately avoiding the blunt titles common in the category ("Werewolf / Mafia / Billionaire").

- This differentiator **is not why it took off** : ① Galatea and Wehear were already doing audio web novels; ② no user content or review mentions 'listening' or sleep mode; ③ the timing of the growth lines up with 1.3.0's attribution, top-up and review-prompt tasks, not with any new feature launch. What actually drove it is the standard industrialized playbook for going-global web novels: a Singapore shell + paid acquisition + W2A + coin-per-chapter payments + prompted reviews.

### 6. How many people have seen it

- Few people know about it yet: no media coverage, 0 discussion on X and TikTok, no disclosed revenue. Only automated data sites like AppInsider and AppBrain have pages on it.

- But the **category** itself is well known: Chinese-developed global web novels are a public, mature business, and it's crowded. Heartale is just another new app, not a "hidden opportunity."

### 7. Copycats

No evidence it's copying Heartale. It's competing alongside a batch of web-novel apps launched in 2026 (NovelMist, Moonnova, KissNovel, StoryPort, VistaNovel, etc.).

### 8. What to borrow

- The cold-start sequence for new apps: first pass review with a clean shell version from a "small literary hobby team" (July, Play data-collection disclosure says nothing is collected), then about two months later wire in attribution, payments, ad slots, and review tasks all at once, and only then start spending.

- W2A + clipboard attribution: the ad lands on a web page showing the first few chapters, the clipboard carries the book ID into the app, and the reader continues to the paid chapters. This is the key conversion step behind the high conversion rates in web-novel and short-drama exports.

- "Good-review task": users trade coins for ratings in a task center, which quickly pushes ratings to 4.9 during cold start and helps the app chart in the Books subcategories.

- The bar for the small English-speaking stores' Books charts (nz, au, ca) is very low: New Zealand reached #30 with only 0 ratings, so a small volume buys chart visibility.

### 9. Still unclear

- Which platforms and how much was spent: none of the three ad libraries has it, and no direct evidence in the Meta ad library has been found.

- Which company is behind it: Singapore shell, and the Chinese placeholder text suggests a Chinese team, but which global web-novel company's sock-puppet portfolio it belongs to hasn't been identified.

- Retention and ROI: Top Grossing rank swung between 119 and 176, and au dropped from 102 to 175, so whether the spend pays back is uncertain.

- How much of the rating count comes from incentivized good reviews can't be quantified.
