A glowing bead board, and a "bestselling" app with only 59 ratings

What it is The companion app for an overseas perler bead brand: turn photos into bead patterns, a pattern community, and one-tap buying of the exact colors and quantities for your pattern, plus a connection to a light-up smart bead board.

Why it took off The beads and the board got the attention, not the app. The "light up a square, place a bead" video was reposted by a 3k-follower alt account to 270k views, and cheap Chinese bead supply chains were moved to the US. Its rank on the shopping charts is because almost nobody in this category uses Apple in-app purchase, so a few memberships can land it in the top 20.

CHow you could follow Don't build another pattern app. What's worth copying is the structure: find a crafts category with "consumables + need for patterns," make a free tool app, tie the results directly to what you sell, then send free hardware to small creators whose visuals sell themselves.

C grade: a pattern app alone competes with dozens of free tools for a feature that doesn't make money; doing it as a brand requires supply chains, inventory and logistics. White-label smart boards start at $11, Artkal and a batch of Amazon sellers are already in, so it's not worth an indie dev following the product. What's worth learning is the playbook. PixieCraft charts in the Shopping top-grossing lists of 30 countries' App Stores, but its global rating count is only 59. The app itself didn't run; what ran is the overseas mini-bead brand behind it. Here's how the chart position came about, what actually drove growth, the app's role in it, and whether you should follow it.

A 3k-follower alt account, one 270k-view video

In Aug 2026 22, a handcraft creator called @_emmy_kate_ on TikTok posted a video. She had only 3,106 followers and usually made Kandi jewelry for rave culture. The video showed a black bead board with some squares lit up; she placed beads on the lit squares. The caption read: "This light-up bead board is a total game changer! 1,181 beads, 23 colors, I don't have to count a single one." By 11-06 the video had 273k views and 39.6k likes, and the same kind of video the day before had 130k views.

Interestingly, the board brand she thanked was GCTECH, not PixieCraft. PixieCraft appeared in the video as the bead supplier: "This board uses 2.6mm beads, so of course I'm using @pixiecraft.art's pixie beads."

A month later, PixieCraft released its own LED smart board. In Sep 24, the official account posted its first "Follow the light where it shines," with 30k views; from Sep 26 onward, small creators kept posting "thanks for sending the new board." In Oct, @valerieespino.arts, with 14,1.96M followers, posted a trial video that got 230k views.

The videos from these two months show how the business works: first someone sells beads, then creators use a light-up board to make the beadwork look good, and finally the brand makes its own board and an app that tells the board which square to light.

What it actually is

PixieCraft's app launched on iOS in 2026-07-16 and on Google Play in 2026-08-02. The developer is Submartingale Technology Co., Ltd., which has only this one app. The app is English-only and does the following:

  • Turns photos into bead patterns, or lets you draw on a blank canvas;
  • Has a pattern community with anime, game characters and Kandi designs; creators earn PixiePoints for uploading patterns;
  • Smart Make List: pick a pattern and it calculates how many beads of each color you need. These are the colors PixieCraft sells itself, and you can order what's missing with one tap; first orders in the app get 85% off;
  • Connects to the Bluetooth smart board and lights up squares one color at a time.

The app only charges for Pro membership, in tiers from $1.99 to $29.99 (App Store page, 11-06). Beads and boards are sold elsewhere: the Shopify site pixiecraft.art (30–120 color sets $29.95–$159.95,52 × 52 smart boards $58.99–$64.99), plus Amazon and TikTok Shop. The site's assets were uploaded as early as August 2025, with images hosted on an Alibaba Cloud US West node; the team is most likely Chinese going overseas (inference).

How the "top grossing in 30 countries" came about

11-06 It charts in the Shopping category in about 30 countries: #9 in Qatar, #16 in Korea, #20 in the Philippines and Brazil, and #81 in the US. It looks like strong sales, but the category is just low-barrier.

Shopping apps sell physical goods, and physical goods don't go through Apple in-app purchase, so almost nobody competes on this category's top-grossing charts. 11-06 In Qatar's Shopping top grossing, #5 "Vinted Finder" has no ratings locally; PixieCraft has 0 ratings there and ranks #9. In Korea, the #7 app has only 4 ratings and the #13 app only 1. A few memberships can land it in the top 20.

The app's own volume is small: 59 global ratings on iOS, about 7 new in 6 days; US store 34 ratings, 4.53 stars (App Store, 11-06). Google Play has 9,678 installs and 7 new in 1,098 days (11-06). There are very few iOS reviews; one 3-star review says "got logged out halfway through, never could log back in" (Canada, 08-04).

So if you clicked in after seeing it on a chart, remember one thing: a Shopping top-grossing rank doesn't tell you how much money the app makes.

What actually drove growth

The beads and the board. Broken down, there are three things.

One: a different bead. The perler beads Americans know are the big 5mm beads from Perler and Hama, with few colors. PixieCraft sells 2.6mm mini beads, with smaller grains and more detail, and runs 300 single-color refill packs in-house. Perler beadwork had its boom in China about 2025 years ago; mini beads and LED boards can be sourced for as little as ¥58 on 1688, so moving that cheap supply chain to the US fits well with the anime, gaming and Kandi themes young people like.

Two: film a hardware demo whose visuals tell the story."Light up a square, place a bead" needs no narration; you get it the moment you see it. The hits usually come from small accounts: @_emmy_kate_ with 3k followers has several videos over 10k views and two over 100k. PixieCraft's approach is to send lots of samples, provide exclusive discount codes (EMMY-10, AZURESTARS, PIXIEFUN), and run giveaways and a Halloween pixel-art challenge. The official account @pixiecraft.art has posted 887 videos with 20.2k followers, but recent posts get only a few hundred to two thousand views each (TikHub, 11-06), so creators still do most of the work.

Three: use the app to keep people. The smart board needs the app, and the patterns in the app use PixieCraft's own colors, so you reorder with one tap after you finish a piece. Beads are a consumable, so every new project means buying more; repeat purchases are where the money is. Giving the app away for free is smart.

As for whether it ran big ad campaigns: one Facebook bead group had someone saying "I see its ads everywhere," but we found no further evidence in public sources; unverified.

Users are talking about the beads, not the app. On Reddit r/PerlerBeads there's "If you are considering buying PixieCraft, read this" (62 upvotes, 38 comments) and "PixieCraft review." Good reviews praise the beads and vivid colors; bad ones complain about slow shipping and slow customer service, and some find it pricey, saying Shein is cheaper.

Two takeaways: photo-to-pattern is already a commodity, with plenty of free tools in both English and Chinese; and smart boards are available to anyone from factories. The video that popularized the category used someone else's board. PixieCraft stands apart by tying its own bead colors, boards, and app patterns together, plus a group of small creators who make its videos.

How many people have seen it

Revenue is not public, there's no press coverage, and nobody has mentioned it on X in nearly 90 days. People who know it are in the bead-craft community: Reddit, Facebook bead groups, TikTok craft creators. The brand itself is little known, but the whole niche is no longer quiet. China's supply chain has plenty of smart-board source factories, there are 20+ bead apps on the China App Store, and pattern tools for going global keep launching.

If it were you

C. Worth learning from, but not worth chasing. Building a standalone bead-pattern app means competing for a monetization-poor feature against dozens of free tools and an incumbent with 630k installs. Building a brand like PixieCraft requires supply chain, inventory, logistics, and customer service. It's an e-commerce business, not something an app solves.

Who it fits: Teams already doing cross-border e-commerce, with factories or supply chains, who want to pair a consumable category with a 'tool app'. Also people who've already done bead craft in China, have pattern and color-chart data, and want to replicate the category overseas.

Who it doesn't fit: Solo indie developers who only code and hope one app will grow organically in the store. The app's own downloads tell the story: after six months it has only 59 iOS ratings. It's also not for anyone hoping to sell beads like them: mini beads and smart boards already have white-label options, and Artkal and many Amazon sellers are already in.

How to do it (if you must): The most copyable part is the structure, not the bead category itself. Find a hands-on category that is 'consumable + needs patterns or recipes', such as diamond painting, cross-stitch, LEGO-style building, or embroidery. Build a free tool app where the output maps directly to products you sell (colors, bead counts, kits). Don't charge a subscription; earn from repeat consumable purchases. For hardware, start with a factory's white-label product, confirm people buy, and only then consider your own molds.

How to acquire users: Pick something that sells itself visually (glowing, moving, dramatic before/after), and send samples to dozens of creators with a few thousand followers each, with unique discount codes. PixieCraft's experience is that hits come from 3k-follower accounts, not million-follower ones. Don't count on store search, and don't count on the official account to create content on its own.

When to move: The window for beads in the US is already taken by white-label sellers and brands. If you're replicating the category in a new niche, get sample videos out before 2026 Christmas and 2027 Valentine's Day.

What would mean I'm reading it wrong: ① PixieCraft's app ratings and installs start climbing sharply (for example, passing 1,000 ratings in the US iOS store within a quarter). That would mean the app itself became the acquisition channel, so a standalone tool has a shot. ② Its sales on Amazon or TikTok Shop become public and large. That would mean the brand business is bigger than it looks, and someone with supply chain capacity should go after it head-on. ③ Conversely, if its creator videos stop in early 2027 and the official account goes quiet, the wave has passed and nobody should jump in now.

One line

PixieCraft is the companion app for a cross-border bead brand. The brand focuses on 2.6mm mini beads (PixieBeads) and LED smart bead boards, and the team appears to be Chinese. The app offers photo-to-pattern conversion, a pattern community, a Smart Make List that calculates how many beads of each color a pattern needs, buying beads by color, and PixiePoints for pattern creators. The iOS version launched 2026-07-16, and developer Submartingale Technology Co., Ltd. has only this one app.

Verdict

The app itself didn't break out. What did was the bean-selling brand behind it. The recall score's "30 tops the Shopping Top Grossing charts in several countries" is actually a side effect of how Shopping is counted. Shopping apps sell physical goods outside Apple's in-app purchase, so the Top Grossing chart in this category has almost no competition. A few subscriptions are enough to crack the top 20. In Qatar's Shopping Top Grossing chart, it ranks #9 with 0 local ratings. The #5 app, "Vinted Finder", has 0 ratings too (appstore library, 11-06). PixieCraft only takes in Pro membership fees here ($1.99–$29.99). The beads and pegboards are sold through the Shopify store, Amazon and TikTok Shop, and that revenue never shows up on Apple's charts.

The real thing to study is the brand's playbook, in three steps:

  1. Sell 2.6mm mini beads, distinct from the mainstream US 5mm Perler/Hama beads.
  2. Use LED smart bead boards, where lit cells show where to place each bead, to make striking TikTok videos.
  3. Use the free app to pull people in (finding patterns, photo-to-pattern), then move them to buying beads and boards and renewing memberships.

The app is a retention piece in this loop, not the growth source itself.

1. Data

iOS (appstore library + Apple lookup)

  • Launched 2026-07-16; current version 1.5.3 (10-14 update, added cloud sync); English only; Shopping category.
  • Global ratings: 10-28 is 58, 11-05 is 64, 11-06 dropped back to 59 (data glitch; cause of the drop unverified). ~6 new in 7 days. US 34, 4.53 stars (lookup 11-06); UK 8, Philippines and Thailand 4 each, other countries 0–2.
  • Top Grossing: 11-06 charted in Shopping Top Grossing in about 30 countries: #9 in Qatar, #16 in South Korea, #20 in the Philippines and Brazil, #24 in Hong Kong and Indonesia, #81 in the US. It never made the overall chart in any country.
  • Benchmarks (appstore library 11-06): South Korea Shopping Top Grossing #7 "FastSeller" has only 4 ratings, #13 "GOATH" only 1. In Qatar, most of the top 20 are small utilities like parcel tracking and sneaker raffle apps, with single-digit ratings. A high rank shows people are paying, but the amounts are small.
  • In-app purchases (App Store web): pro $1.99 / $2.99 / $4.99 / $29.99, pro-plan $24.99, annual price for legacy users $24.99, discounted price $29.99. The description says "15% off your first order", which applies to bean orders placed in the app.

Android (googleplay library, 11-06)

  • PixieCraft: 2026-08-02 listed, 9,678 installs, +1,098 over 7 days. #172 in Malaysia's Shopping Top Free chart.

Brand side (basis for the estimate)

  • Main TikTok @pixiecraft.art: 20.2K followers, 835K likes, 887 videos, posting 1–3 a day. Recent videos get only a few hundred to two thousand views each (TikHub 11-06). A side account @pixiecraft_us (2,611 followers) has a top video of 157K views (07-11).
  • TikTok Shop: 120-color 120K-bead set ($159.95) has sold 151 units in total. Tracked 1 creators, with affiliate videos at 41K views (HashIQ, updated 10-21).
  • The storefront pixiecraft.art runs on Shopify. Logo and popup assets were uploaded in 2025-08, suggesting the store opened around August 2025. Products include 30–120-color sets ($29.95–$159.95), single-color refills, a 52×52 smart board ($58.99–$64.99), and bead-plus-board bundles ($89.99–$119.95). Free worldwide shipping over $59.99. Flagship products are also on Amazon (e.g. B0HJ8GTGYB 104×104 smart board), and one 72-color set on a third-party page shows 93 ratings at 4.3 stars.
  • The website claims "100K+ users", "500,000+ creators", and "30+ countries"; these figures are unverified. Images on pixiecraft.app are hosted on an Alibaba Cloud OSS node in US West (oss-us-west-1.aliyuncs.com), one of the clues that the team is a Chinese company going global. The homepage reads "We still remember you;)", and there is a web version at web.pixiecraft.app.

Verdict: Photo-to-pattern stopped being worth money long ago; there are plenty of free tools in both Chinese and English. The color codes in the pattern are the colors it sells, so users can work out how many beads they need and reorder in one tap.

III. Growth levers (where users come from)

  1. TikTok creator seeding is the strongest evidence here (confirmed).
    • @_emmy_kate_ (only 3,106 followers) posts "glowing bead-board" videos: one gets 08-22 273k views and 39.6k likes, another 08-21 130k views, and another 08-19 50k views; the one that name-checks "finding the pattern in the free PixieCraft app" pulls 10-07 24k views.
    • @valerieespino.arts (1.96M followers) 10-14 tries the smart board, 230K views.
    • @rittenhouseart (156K followers), @8bitbabyjess (82K views), @highh_hopess (Kandi/PLUR circle), @ottyscreations ("thanks for sending the set"), @mexicanpeachcosplay and others are all gifted-product collaborations.
    • Nearly all the hits are LED smart-board videos: each light that turns on places a bead, and the visual itself is the hook.
  2. Heavy posting on its own accounts (confirmed). 887 videos on the main account, plus a US side account. Tactics include "reply to a comment with a character pattern" (Spider-Man, Hatsune Miku, Mario, Simpsons), a Halloween pixel-art challenge with prizes (10-11), and gift-giving prompts for Christmas. The official account's best video (07-05, Hatsune Miku) got 20K views, and recent videos get only a few hundred each, so organic reach is declining.
  3. Multi-channel selling on TikTok Shop, Amazon, and the website (confirmed). The bio carries discount code PIXIEFUN for 9% off. The website has a spin-to-win discount popup, and the app gives 85% off the first order.
  4. Paid ads (possible, unconfirmed). Someone in a Facebook fuse-bead group posted: "I keep seeing it advertised everywhere". Our metaads library has no record of this brand, but that library only tracks products on its watchlist, so no result doesn't mean no ads.
  5. Reddit word of mouth (confirmed to exist, both good and bad). r/PerlerBeads has "If you are considering buying PixieCraft, read this" (62 upvotes, 38 comments), "PixieCraft review" (good beads, nice colors, but slow shipping and poor customer service), and "Has anybody bought from Pixiecraft?" (complaints about price, saying the tools on Shein are cheaper). r/beadsprites has people debating whether Pixie beads are worth it. People are talking about this brand, but about the beads, not the app.
  6. Store search (inferred). The iOS listing is English-only with 34 US ratings, so it's unlikely to rank well for searches like "bead pattern" or "perler". Downloads probably come mainly from brand traffic: packaging, the "Download PixieCraft app" call-to-action in videos, and the fact that smart boards need the app to work.

4. Why it took off

  • Timing: Fuse beads blew up in China in 2025 (after the App Store China listing saw twenty-some pattern apps appear from 2025-11 onward; in 1688 source factories began shipping smart fuse-bead boards at scale). The Chinese supply chain made 2.6mm mini beads and LED boards very cheap. In the US, Perler is the older 5mm product, and mini beads plus anime, gaming, and Kandi themes filled a gap.
  • Hardware hook: LED smart boards go viral easily on TikTok, and even small accounts can get 270K views. Using the board means using the app, so app installs follow the hardware.
  • Closed loop and retention: The pattern uses the brand's own colors. The Smart Make List calculates which colors are missing and how many of each, then reorders in one tap (300+ single-color refills in stock). Repeat bead purchases are where the money is. PixiePoints shares revenue with pattern creators to encourage more uploads and fill out the community.
  • Relies on existing assets: The bead and board e-commerce business was already running (the website launched around 2025-08, and Amazon and TikTok Shop stores existed). The app was added in 2026-07; it was not built from scratch as an indie product.

5. Differentiation

  • Compared with pure pattern tools (Beads Creator, Threadologie, dozens of domestic fuse-bead apps): the pattern's colors are the brand's own products, and it has its own LED smart boards. Pure tools can only earn through subscriptions. PixieCraft earns from selling beads and boards, so the app can be free.
  • Compared with long-established bead brands like Artkal: it adds smart boards and TikTok-style, younger-skewing content.
  • Compared with white-label smart boards: it has a brand, an app community, and bundled beads. But white-label boards start at $11, so the hardware moat is shallow.
  • These differences are why the brand can run, and the app is the vehicle for the differentiation. Looking at the app alone, downloads are small: 59 ratings on iOS worldwide, under 10K installs on Android.

6. How many people have seen it

  • Revenue is not public. No media coverage found. x-radar searched X for "pixiecraft" over the last 90 days and found nothing.
  • The fuse-bead and craft circles (r/PerlerBeads, r/beadsprites, Facebook fuse-bead groups, TikTok craft creators) know the brand. They discuss bead quality, price, and shipping speed.
  • Verdict: It's being talked about in niche circles. But the whole category (smart fuse-bead boards, pattern apps) is already crowded in the Chinese supply chain and on the China App Store.

VII. Copycats

  • Hardware: WOTOYS Smart LED Fuse Bead Pegboard (Amazon), PIXDOU source factory (customizable white-label), GCTeching, white-label boards at $11 on AliExpress, and "smart LED fuse bead boards" on Taiwan's Coupang. These likely ship from the same factories as PixieCraft. They look more like they emerged at the same time than copying it.
  • App: Fuse Beads - by diandumao (Android, 9,369 installs, 2026-07 listed), Beadify (2026-06), PixelBead (2026-04 / 2026-09), Beadcraft (2026-07) and others, mostly copycat pattern-maker tools built for going global.

8. What others can borrow

  • "Consumables brand + free tool app": the app doesn't earn from subscriptions. It makes money by tying its output (the pattern) straight to products you can buy (bead colors, bead counts).
  • Pick a hardware product whose visuals tell the story on their own (light-guided) as the TikTok hook, and send free units to lots of small creators. Hits often come from accounts with 3k followers, not the big ones.
  • Listing in a low-barrier category like Shopping can get you a "Top Grossing Top 20" placement in many countries (how much it helps is unverified). The flip side: when you study other products, don't treat a Shopping chart ranking as evidence of strong revenue either.

9. What I'm still unsure about

  • The brand's real revenue, and what share of orders come from the app.
  • Whether they're spending heavily on Meta or TikTok ads (the only evidence is "I keep seeing its ads everywhere", a single user testimony).
  • The company behind it and its team (Submartingale's Chinese name, and whether it's a bead or board factory's own brand).
  • Why the 11-06 global rating dropped from 64 to 59 (Apple purging ratings, or a country's data definition changed).
  • Whether the smart board is developed in-house or white-labeled from a factory like PIXDOU.
