A crowd of kids who wanted KATSEYE as their ringtone propped up a 4.4-star app where two-thirds of reviews are one-star: the paid-acquisition math behind PlayTone
What it is A personalization tool for iPhone that swaps ringtones and wallpapers and adds charging animations and widgets, $4.99 a week by subscription, with ads on top.
Why it's up It buys ads using trending songs as creative to pull in US kids, then pops a rating prompt before the paywall to push the star average to 4.4. Ringtones are an old need that got another bump because iOS 26 added native ringtone support.
CHow you could play it Don't copy this app; copy its factory playbook: one account runs a few generic shells per year in proven categories, stuff names with high-volume search terms, and monetize with both subscription and ads. For ringtones, go to non-English markets it ignores, or follow ClipTone's route and use phone-customization creators with a hook.

PlayTone is an iPhone ringtone and wallpaper app from a Vietnamese company, listed in Jul 22. Over the last 10 days its global rating count rose from 3,077 to 4,410, with the US accounting for nearly six in ten. It has no new features; it works on an old playbook: ads featuring trending songs, a rating prompt right after install, then a $4.99-a-week paywall and ads to collect money. The playbook is visible to everyone and the category is long crowded. What's worth learning is the playbook, not this app.
A one-star review that says "it said free"
In Nov 2026 4, a one-star review on PlayTone's US App Store page was titled "Grrrr" with the body in all caps: "I WANTED TO DO A KATSEYE RINGTONE BUT IT MADE ME PAY AND SAID IT WAS FREE" (I wanted a KATSEYE ringtone, it said free, then made me pay). Same day: "The ad says Michael Jackson, and there's no Michael Jackson once installed." Another: "I'm just a kid so I deleted it."
Scrolling back, the reviews keep coming. Oct 31: "I can't find any song I know, or the ones in the ad"; Oct 27: "You lied, I thought I could play KATSEYE"; Oct 25: "I can't set the mirrors demo"; Oct 19: "I want midnight sun and it makes me pay"; Nov 3: just "I don't have money but I really want this app!!"
Put together, here's the app's origin: kids in the US see ads showing the songs they're already into set as ringtones; they tap through, find the songs missing, and paying is the only way to get them.
What it actually is
In one line: a personalization toolkit for iPhone ringtones and wallpapers. Features include pulling audio from camera-roll videos into ringtones, audio trimming, a library of ready-made ringtones and sound effects, HD wallpapers, charging animations, and home-screen widgets. The name is literally "Ringtone & Wallpaper", putting the two biggest search terms in the title.
The store page says "Search one term, get ringtones and wallpapers together." That's almost the only way it differs from competitors, and ZEDGE and ClipTone have all these features too.
Pricing: weekly $4.99, monthly $9.99, yearly $34.99,3 with a free trial. It also runs ads from AdMob, Meta and AppLovin (its app-ads.txt lists those three plus a batch of resellers). Subscriptions plus ads, both revenue streams.
Why it's climbing now
The demand has always existed. "How to set a song as an iPhone ringtone" is a question people search year-round. Custom-ringtone tutorials on TikTok often hit millions of views, one at 6.7M. iOS 26 added native "set audio as ringtone", and a late-September tutorial with 337K views covers exactly that (needs iOS 26 or later), which revived the topic. PlayTone draws on people who don't know how and want one-tap setup, many of them kids.
The traffic is bought (inferred, high confidence). No creator videos for it turn up on TikTok, nobody mentions it on X, and there's no press coverage. But reviews name "the songs in the ad" directly, several are about specific song titles, and the developer runs ATT tracking across multiple ad networks, which is standard for a paid-acquisition factory. The exact platform and spend weren't found; original ad creatives weren't located, unverified.
The stars were requested (inferred, high confidence). Of the 44 recent US reviews with text, 29 are one-star, nearly all complaining about the same things: everything costs money, only sound effects and no songs, too many ads. Yet the US overall rating is 4.44 stars across 2,595 ratings (App Store, 11-06). Text reviews this bad alongside a high star average suggest a supporting signal: on 11-06, ClipTone ranked #31 on the US Entertainment Free chart, adding 515 ratings in 7 days; PlayTone ranked #97, adding 707 ratings in 7 days. Fewer downloads, more ratings. The most likely explanation is that the rating prompt fires before users hit the paywall, so the five-star taps come from people who haven't been disappointed yet. A 4.4-star average on the store page also converts paid-acquisition traffic better.

Source: App Store regional charts and ratings, 10-28 to 11-06. Entries like #24 in Kenya and #28 in Nigeria, "top 50" in small markets, reflect low entry bars, not volume.
One thing doesn't add up and should be stated: ratings are accelerating while ranks are slipping. Either paid acquisition is steady and the rating prompt is firing more often, or paid acquisition is shrinking. The data can't tell these apart yet.
Where the money comes from, and how much
Revenue is small (estimated). It's not on the US or UK Top Grossing charts at all. The users are mostly kids, and reviews saying "I have no money" and "I'm just a kid" show up more than once, so few people buy the weekly plan. The money is probably two streams: a small number of parents or older teens on the weekly plan, plus a large pool of non-paying users who see ads. That also explains why it runs three ad networks at once: with low payer conversion, ads have to recover part of the cost.
Who is behind it
The developer account is "Viet Nam Tourism", and the seller legal name is a Vietnamese travel joint stock company. The same entity runs Mytour, a Vietnamese hotel and flight booking app. Over the course of 2026, this tool account shipped 5 apps: AI voice changer (January), an emulator (April), PlayTone (July), AI emoji (August), and reverse audio (October). Only PlayTone gained traction. The other four have single-digit rating counts.
This is the classic playbook of a Vietnamese tool factory: one account tests several themes at once, and whichever one pays back its paid acquisition gets more budget. On Android there is also a same-named "Playtone: Ringtone & Wallpaper". Its package name and the iOS build both contain "airingtone", and it's published by a different Vietnamese company with only 500+ downloads. It looks like the same outsourced team's code, but this is unverified.
Who it's competing with
| Competitors | Launched | Scale (App Store, 11-06) | Compared with PlayTone |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ringtones Maker - the ring app | 2018-03 | Global ratings about 1.77M, 7-day +8,401 | The established leader, two orders of magnitude bigger |
| ZEDGE Wallpapers & Ringtones | 2016-03 | US ratings 203k | The originator of the ringtone-plus-wallpaper category, with a user-uploaded content library |
| RingTune | 2015-09 | US ratings 220k, Top Grossing #30 | The real money-making older product |
| ClipTone | 2024-11 | US ratings 121k, Entertainment Top Free #31 | Spread through TikTok creators; one tagged video got 17.5M views |
| Garage Ringtones | 2022-12 | US ratings 53k, Entertainment Top Grossing #44 | Multilingual, launched under many names, revenue on the charts |
| Nota, Melody, Tik, Snap Ringtones and others | 2024–2026 | Ratings from a few hundred to ten thousand | The same shell as PlayTone, interchangeable with it |
| iOS 26 built-in "Use as Ringtone" | From ¥2025-09 | Every iPhone that has updated | Free, no app install needed |
New look-alikes kept launching in the second half of 2026 (Ringtone Master+ in September, Phone Ringtones: Sonnerie in September). The question here isn't whether someone is copying it. It is copying others itself.
What kids actually want, nobody can legally provide
Reading the negative reviews makes the demand clear: users want the hottest song right now, turned into a ringtone in one tap. PlayTone can't deliver that because it has no music licensing. It can only offer sound effects and its own ringtones. Using your own song means extracting audio from a video, and that step sits behind the paywall. Every competitor hits the same ceiling. It's also why the category can only lean on "popular songs in the ads" to drive clicks, which amounts to bait.
Meanwhile, Apple built "set as ringtone" into iOS 26 as a system feature. One negative review even tells people: "Don't install this, go to Settings → Sounds → Ringtone and pick your own." The smoother the system gets, the less this kind of app has left to sell to people who don't know the system can do it.
If it were you
C. You can learn a complete paid-acquisition factory playbook from it, but the app itself isn't worth copying. Ringtones and wallpapers are a decade-old category, the leader is two orders of magnitude bigger, the same shell ships several times a year, and Apple keeps moving the core function into the OS. PlayTone's ranking is already sliding.
Who it suits: small factories that already run tool apps and have Meta, AppLovin or TikTok ad accounts plus a creative team. It can serve as a low-cost sample for testing one theme. Ringtone and wallpaper apps for non-English markets (Spanish, Portuguese, Indonesian, Vietnamese) could follow the same model. PlayTone is English only.
Who it doesn't suit: indie devs who haven't run paid ads and hope store search or word of mouth will bring volume (this category has no word of mouth to speak of, and two-thirds of PlayTone's written reviews are one-star). It also doesn't suit anyone aiming to build a "better ringtone app", because users want licensed hit songs and no amount of polish can deliver those.
How to copy it: Copy the method, not the product. One account, one year, 4–5 niches, each a generic shell in a mature category. Stuff the name with the two biggest search terms. Pair subscriptions with ads. Ask for ratings before users hit the paywall. Copy its distribution playbook, not its scam: if the ad promises the song, the app has to deliver it, or bad reviews and refunds will sink the account.
How to acquire users: paid acquisition, with creatives showing screen recordings of "hit song / hot character turned into your ringtone and wallpaper"; or follow ClipTone and find small TikTok creators who make "phone customization" videos, one tagged video per topic. ClipTone reached Entertainment Top Free #31 this way, more than sixty places above PlayTone.
Timing: there's no clear window. This is an evergreen category. But the spread of iOS 26 eats a little demand every month. If you build in it, keep the creatives in step with each season's hit songs.
What would show this read is wrong: (1) if PlayTone broke into the US Entertainment Top Grossing top 200 by 2027 January, kids-driven monetization is better than estimated, and the playbook pays more than it looks; (2) if the same account's next apps also gain traction, the factory is reliably replicable and not just lucky; (3) conversely, if by December it has dropped out of the US Entertainment Top Free top 200 and rating growth is also slowing, paid acquisition has stopped and this theme won't pay back.

Bottom line
The standard playbook of Vietnamese outsourced tool-app factories: ringtones and wallpapers are an evergreen iOS category with large search demand. PlayTone uses "popular songs as ringtones" as the hook for paid acquisition (mainly US, users skew young). Once users arrive, it asks for a rating first, then shows a hard paywall ($4.99/week), and runs ads alongside. It has no real product differentiation. Its rating count grows fast mainly because of rating prompts, not word of mouth, and its chart position is sliding.
Fundamentals
- Developer: Viet Nam Tourism (seller legal name VIET NAM TOURISM - VIET JOURNEY JOINT STOCK COMPANY). The same entity runs the Vietnamese OTA Mytour (Mytour: Khách sạn, Chuyến bay, a separate developer account). This tool account (developer_id 1870727120) shipped 5 apps in 2026: Voicethread AI voice changer (01-29), RetroEMU emulator (04-23), PlayTone (07-22), JoyMoji AI emoji (08-17), and Reverse Audio (10-09). Only PlayTone gained traction; the rest have single-digit rating counts (appstore library app / app_profile, 2026-11-06). A typical "test many themes, double down on whichever works" pattern.
- Listed 2026-07-22, current version 1.2.1 (2026-11-01), English only, 132 MB (iTunes lookup).
- Monetization: subscriptions at Weekly $4.99 / Monthly $9.99 / Yearly $34.99 (App Store page). app-ads.txt lists AdMob (3 pub IDs), Meta Audience Network and AppLovin direct, plus a chain of resellers, so it's subscriptions plus ads (https://viet-jouney-jsc.web.app/app-ads.txt). The privacy labels include "Data Used to Track You", meaning ATT tracking is enabled, which paid-acquisition attribution depends on.
- On Android there's a same-named "Playtone: Ringtone & Wallpaper" (com.airingtone.wallpaper.maker, developer Matechmobile Global, 500+ downloads, per AppBrain search summary). Its package name and the iOS bundle (com.ringtone.maker.wallpager.airingtone) both contain "airingtone", which suggests the same codebase or the same outsourced team. Unverified.
Growth data
- Global ratings 3077 → 4410 (2026-10-28 → 11-06), daily gains rose from 39 to 185, +967 over the last 7 days; charting countries 53 → 66 (data card / appstore library app_day).
- The US is the bulk: us ratings 2546 (about 58% of the total), +707 in the last 7 days; gb 390 (+62); ng 256; za 101; ca 101 (appstore library app_profile, 11-06).
- But the ranking is falling: US Entertainment Top Free #78–84 (10-28 to 10-31) → #90–97 (11-02 to 11-06); UK #82–97 → #108–118 (appstore library chart_rank). The "top 50" placements on cards, like Kenya #24 and Nigeria #28, reflect low thresholds in small-country Entertainment charts and don't mean volume.
- Rating growth and rank don't match: on the same US day, ClipTone at Entertainment Top Free #31,7 gained only +515 ratings, while PlayTone at #97,7 gained +707 (appstore library app_profile us). Fewer downloads but more ratings means the rating prompt fires aggressively (more below).
- Grossing charts: neither the US nor the UK put it in the Entertainment Top Grossing top 200. It reached Entertainment Top Grossing #38 in Uganda and once in Egypt (library). Revenue scale is still small.
Why users come, and from where
- Ringtone demand is evergreen: iPhone users wanting a song as their ringtone is an old need, and "custom ringtone iPhone" tutorials rack up millions of views on TikTok (e.g. @xoxo.shaylaaa 2 6.7M, @letsdodiz 2.69M; TikHub search 2026-11-06). Also, since iOS 26, the system lets you set audio directly as a ringtone, and TikTok tutorials (@teaimann, 2026-09-30.3M views) say "requires iOS 26 or later," which revived the topic. PlayTone requires iOS 18 and up, and it's selling to people who don't know how and want one-tap done.
- Paid acquisition (highly likely, original creatives not found in the ad libraries): reviews say "I can't find any songs I know or were in the adds" (10-31), and several are drawn to a specific song (KATSEYE, "Mirrors demo", "midnight sun", "novi stars"), only to find it's unusable or paywalled after install (iTunes US reviews RSS). That suggests the ad creatives use hit songs as ringtones. The seller's homepage has app-ads.txt, ATT tracking enabled, and multiple ad network accounts, which is the standard setup for a paid acquisition factory. Our metaads / tiktokads libraries didn't track it (not on the list, so no hits doesn't mean no ads).
- Store search: the name stacks the two big keywords Ringtone + Wallpaper, the subtitle is "Custom Screen Themes & Sounds", and the description is packed with charging wallpaper, widgets, themes keywords. Standard ASO. The iTunes search API was rate-limited that day, so keyword rankings weren't pulled and are unverified.
- No organic content spread: TikTok searches for "playtone app" / "playtone ringtone" return no creator or user videos; x-radar in the last 60 days: 0 posts; media coverage: 0; no TrustMRR or revenue-sharing posts (Jina search).
Retention / payment
- Retention and payment rely on the paywall, not on the product being good. Of the most recent 44 written US reviews, 29 are one-star, mainly complaining about "everything costs money", "$4.99/week after a 3-day trial", "only sound effects, no songs", and "too many ads" (iTunes US reviews RSS, 2026-08 to 11-04).
- Yet the overall rating is 4.44 (2595 ratings, lookup). With text reviews this bad but stars this high, and rating growth far outpacing rivals at the same rank, it's almost certain the app fires an SKStoreReview prompt before users hit the paywall (e.g. on onboarding or first use), collecting star ratings from people who don't write reviews. This is a "guided rating" tactic, meant to keep 4.4 stars on the store page and lift conversion from paid acquisition landing pages.
- The user base skews toward teens and kids (reviews like "I don't have money but I really wanted this app", KATSEYE fans), low spending power, so failing to reach top grossing makes sense. Revenue likely comes from two places: a small share of users subscribing to the weekly plan, plus many non-paying users watching ads.

Differentiation
Almost no feature differentiation: extract audio from video, edit, set as ringtone, HD wallpapers, charging animations, widgets, all of which competitors have. The only angle is "one search returns both ringtones and wallpapers" (Unified Dual-Result Search), plus bundling "ringtone + wallpaper + widgets + themes" for the "whole-phone personalization" need. It doesn't work because of that. It works because of the paid acquisition creative (hit songs) + a rating prompt keeping stars at 4.4 + a hard paywall and ad monetization.
Is anyone copying it?
The category is already packed with copycat shells, so "copying it" isn't the issue. It's competing head-on with ZEDGE and ClipTone. In 2026 new look-alikes also launched (Phone Ringtones: Sonnerie 09-25, Ringtone Master+ 09-22, Snap Ringtones 06-18).
Takeaways
- One legal entity runs multiple tool accounts across several themes in parallel, and adds spend to whichever gains traction (here 1 out of 5 worked).
- Stacks two big search terms in the name (Ringtone & Wallpaper) and bundles features into one "whole-phone personalization" package, to cover more keywords.
- Requests ratings before users hit the paywall, holding stars at 4.4 to protect paid acquisition conversion (at the cost of poor text reviews).
- Subscription plus ads double monetization, so low-spending teen traffic can still recoup some cost through ads.
Uncertain
- Which channels were used and how much was spent: no original ad creatives found (Meta / TikTok ad libraries didn't track it).
- Keyword rankings (iTunes search API rate-limited, not retrieved).
- Actual revenue and ROI: not in the US top grossing top 200, estimated scale is small.
- The relationship between the Android version of the same name and Matechmobile Global.
- Rank is slipping while ratings climb: either paid acquisition stayed the same and the prompts got more aggressive, or paid acquisition is shrinking. Can't tell which.
