A "guitar community" app with in-app purchases up to $99.99, reviews gushing about "girls"
What it is A stranger chat / video dating app wearing a guitar-creation community shell, registered under a Wuhan culture media company, making money from coin packs priced $0.99 to $99.99.
Why it took off It used a guitar-community description to pass Apple review, then put the real paid product inside. It charted in the Lifestyle Top Grossing of small, low-barrier countries and Gulf states, carried by a few high-spending users, and it filled the gap left when top 1v1 social apps were blocked or pulled in Turkey and the Gulf.
DHow you could approach it Don't copy it. What's worth learning: to see what an app really does, check its IAP tiers, the "also bought" list and the review text. When you have a legitimate paid product, you can first test small-budget paid acquisition in small-country category Top Grossing charts to validate pricing and revenue scale.

Jamo on the App Store, whose store page describes a guitar-player community for co-writing riffs by chaining each other's parts, plus an AI guitar assistant. No reviewer who bought it mentions guitar; some praise "Great girls", others complain "not enough free stuff". In Nov 6 it ranked #2 in the Cayman Islands Lifestyle Top Grossing chart, yet has zero ratings there. This piece explains what kind of play this is and why indie developers shouldn't follow it.
"Great girls. Lots of fun."
In Sep 2026 16, a US-store reviewer gave Jamo 5 stars: "Great girls. Lots of fun. Great meeting new people." An Aug 22 review called it a "really good site", and an Oct 17 review titled "I like the site" says "Could use more free stuff". A separate Spanish-language review is sexually explicit.
Looking at the store page itself (US store, 11-06):
- The description only talks about guitar: "Pick up your guitar and step into Jamo", start a riff, add a layer of rhythm, build on someone else's melody.
- Age rating 17+, tagged "Messaging and Chat" and "User-Generated Content".
- IAPs are 10 tiers of generic consumables, running from "Jamo Purchase 1 $0.99" up to "Jamo Purchase 12 $99.99", with $4.99, $9.99, $19.99, $49.99 and $79.99 in between. Guitar tools don't price like this; these are coin top-up tiers.
- The "also bought" list is full of dating and video-chat apps: Funuo - Video Chat & Meet, Relike Dating, Hippo Meet New Friends, 18+ Flirt Chat, Bobo - GO Chat, and several AI Girlfriend apps. Apple computes this from co-purchases, and it's the clearest signal of who the users are.
What it is
A stranger chat / video dating app dressed in a guitar-community shell. Chinese developer circles call this a "马甲包" (sock-puppet package): at submission, Apple sees an interest community (side A); after approval, a remote switch flips it to the real product (side B).
The developer is Wuhan Jiuyueban Culture Media Co., Ltd., and the account holds only this one app. Listed Aug 7, it shipped 12 versions by Aug 1.2, with update notes only saying "Fixed bugs", and it has been untouched for nearly three months since. Having passed review, the app updates less to avoid another review, which is standard practice for these packages. Its old name on third-party sites was "Jamo: Guitar Co-creation, Share"; it's now "Jamo: Share & Chat", so the name is also drifting toward chat.
From the outside you can't tell whether the other side is real hosts, paid chat companions, or AI (not verified by installing it).
How far it has run: ratings aren't rising, but it stays on the grossing charts
| Store | Ratings (11-06) | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| US | 368, avg 4.74 | Reviews are mostly one or two words in English and Spanish |
| Turkey | 218 | |
| Saudi Arabia | 116 | Review titles are city names like "الرياض" (Riyadh) and "جازان" (Jazan) |
| Israel | 78 | Reviews are almost all Arabic; one reads "رام الله" (Ramallah) |
| UAE | 74, avg 4.36 |
From Oct 28 to Nov 6, these stores added roughly 0 to 1 new ratings a day each (per-store App Store rating counts, recorded daily). It never entered the overall free chart of any country; in late October one or two countries reached the Lifestyle free chart, and after November none did.
Yet it stayed on the Lifestyle Top Grossing chart: 11-06 Cayman #2 (0 local ratings, and also #87 on the Cayman overall grossing chart), Nepal #10; earlier it reached the thirties in Israel, Oman, Jordan, New Zealand and Bahrain.
Put these two sets of numbers together: few people download it, but those who pay spend a lot. The bar to chart in a small country's Lifestyle grossing list is low enough that a few top-ups a day can get you on; Middle East 1v1 video chat has always been a business built on catching a few big-spending payers. The number of charting countries fell from 31 to 18, with the peak before late October, and it's now declining.
The reviews also don't look organic: the Saudi store has a review titled "الرياض" whose body reads "تم تقيم" ("rated"); the Turkish store has a string of "Mükemmel" (perfect) and "İyiii". They look like prompted ratings (inference).
Where users come from
Organic traffic can mostly be ruled out: it's not on the free charts, ratings aren't climbing, and TikTok, X, Reddit and the news turn up no discussion of it; the only pages you can find are the store listing and chart aggregators. Paying users are spread across Gulf states, Arabic-speaking users in Israel, Turkey, South Asia and the Caribbean, so the most likely source is performance ads from Meta, TikTok or Google, or affiliate ads (inference; no specific creatives found).
Background: from August 2025, Turkey's communications authority blocked nearly 30 social apps including Azar, LivU and Tango, while the US, UAE and Saudi Arabia have been pulling 1v1 social products in bulk (36kr《2025 going-global roundup》). When the leaders are blocked, the remaining paid demand flows to new accounts with swapped shells, until those get found too.
Who's competing with it: new listings the same week
| Product | Launched | Scale | How it differs from Jamo |
|---|---|---|---|
| Azar(Match Group) | 2015 | Charted in 110 iOS stores, combined rating count about 850k | A legitimate major brand, openly doing video chat, top three in Middle East revenue |
| BIGO LIVE | 2016 | Charted in 110 stores, best overall grossing #20 | Live streaming plus tipping, with a content ecosystem |
| HIYAK - Video Chat & Live Call | 2021 | Charted in 62 stores, best Lifestyle #9 | A 1v1 from a Chinese team, with video chat written right in the name, one order of magnitude larger |
| Bobo - GO Chat | 2026-09-16 | Charted in 30 stores, best Lifestyle #20 | Same-period small accounts of the same type, appearing in Jamo's "also bought" |
| Funuo - Video Chat & Meet | 2026-07-21 | Charted in 9 stores | Small accounts of the same type, individual developer accounts |
| Varonexa, Vokoo, Josiie: Plant Chat, Tange, Sparrow, Pinkshow, Yoomi, Kiara, Yukoi | 2026-05 to 11 | Each charted in 3 to 17 stores | Each sits under a different city's "XX Culture Media Co., Ltd.", one app per company, with plant or interest-community shells; Kiara and Yukoi only launched in Nov 3 |
Jamo isn't the one being copied; it's just one account from a common playbook. One company, one app, so a takedown doesn't drag down the others. Whether these accounts are run by the same group hasn't been verified.
If it were you
Verdict: I don't recommend following it. It works not because of the product but because of a review-passing and ad pipeline: a swapped-in shell theme, a local media company as the registered entity, placement in the low-barrier Lifestyle category, and targeting paying users in small countries and the Gulf. This playbook has no barrier to entry; new accounts launch the same week, individual accounts live for months, and Jamo's peak is already behind it.
Who it suits: companies already doing going-global 1v1 social, with chat SDKs, host or companion supply, and overseas payments and ad-buying teams. They don't need this article.
What you can learn:
- To see what an app really does, don't trust the description. Look at the IAP tiers, the "also bought" list, the age rating and content tags, and the review text. A guitar app selling $99.99 consumables has its answer written right there.
- Top Grossing in small countries is cheap. If you have a legitimate paid product and want to validate pricing, first run small-budget campaigns in a few low-barrier countries, watch your category Top Grossing rank, and you can roughly estimate daily revenue scale.
- When leaders get blocked or pulled, demand gets left behind. This time it was Middle East and Turkish 1v1 social; the compliant approach is to build what's allowed locally and what the leaders did badly, not to swap shells.
What would show I got this wrong: if by early 2027 Jamo or the same-batch "culture media" accounts are still on the Lifestyle Top Grossing charts in a dozen countries and haven't been pulled, that would mean Apple cleans up these shells much more slowly than I assumed, and the playbook lasts longer than months. But that would change how risky it is, not the conclusion that it isn't suitable for indie developers.

Jamo: Share & Chat (iOS id6784185492) research report
The bottom line first: this is a very common review-passing shell package in China's going-global "1v1 video / stranger chat" niche, not a new product with its own substance. The store page says "guitar co-creation community + AI guitar assistant" to get through Apple review; what actually earns money is chat, via $0.99–$99.99 coin packs. It shows up on Lifestyle top-grossing charts in a dozen to thirty countries because those small-country Lifestyle grossing charts have very low thresholds, so a few big spenders are enough to chart. It has no real differentiation. The research value is in dissecting the playbook, not copying this product.
1. What it is
- Version history: 1.0 is 2026-07-09,1.1, 08-07 (release_date in the database), 1.2 is 08-12, the release note just says "Fixed bugs", and there have been no updates for nearly 3 months since (US store page on apps.apple.com, read 2026-11-06). This matches the advice in the Juejin "iOS Research Institute" article on clone packages: after review passes, update as little as possible so review isn't triggered again.
- Rename: Appfigures recorded the name as "Jamo: Guitar Co-creation,Share"; the current store name is "Jamo: Share & Chat". The guitar name got it through review, and it was later changed toward "chat" (app.appfigures.com/reports/app-profile/338624420785).
- The real face shown on the store page (US store, 2026-11-06):
- Age rating 16+ (the iTunes lookup gives 17+), tagged Messaging and Chat, User-Generated Content, Social Media.
- In-app purchases are 10 tiers of generic consumables: "Jamo Purchase 1 $0.99" up to "Jamo Purchase 12 $99.99", with $4.99/$9.99/$14.99/$19.99/$29.99/$49.99/$69.99/$79.99 in between. Guitar tools don't price like this; it's a classic coin/diamond top-up ladder.
- The "You Might Also Like" (people who bought this also bought) list is all dating and video chat: Funuo - Video Chat & Meet, LORAX AI Girlfriend, AI Girlfriend & Companion, Relike Dating, Fiixy Dating, Hippo Meet New Friends, 18+ Flirt Chat, Bobo - GO Chat, BBW Romance Dating. This co-purchase list, computed by Apple, is the clearest signal of who its users are.
- The privacy label says "Data Not Collected", yet it's a chat and UGC app. The privacy policy is hosted at app.oc628nld.link/privacy; oc628nld.link is one of 2026-06-11 random .link domains registered in 8, and it appeared in the registration list on the same day as a batch of gambling-site domains (page 133 of annasinai.com's new .link registrations).
- The US reviews are all filler with nothing to do with guitars: "Amazing / Does everything it needs to", "I like the site / Could use more free stuff", "Good app you guys definitely try it", "Really good site … u must try it". Users call it a "site" and want "more free stuff", which suggests the content behind the paywall is the point. The recall card also noted one review: "Great girls… meeting new people".
2. Data: how much did it actually "take off"?
- Ratings: US store 369 (4.74), Turkey 218, Saudi Arabia 116, Israel 78, UAE 74, Italy 72, Japan 57, Jordan 43 (iTunes lookup and the appstore database, 2026-11-06). Appfigures puts the global total at about 2.3K (from the recall card, not verified).
- Growth has nearly stalled: in the database, 10-28 to 11-06; daily new ratings per country are basically 0–1. UAE 71→74, Israel 78→78, Jordan 41→43, Saudi Arabia 110→116, Turkey 217→218 (appstore database, app_day).
- A correction to the recall card's read: in the data card, daily_all_countries.total_ratings fell from 585 to 285, and the recall called it "possibly purged ratings". Checking shows that's not it: the field only sums ratings from countries currently on the chart. The number of charted countries went from 31 to 18, and big contributors like Turkey (218), Saudi Arabia (116), Italy (72) and Japan (57) dropped off the chart, so the total fell with them. Each country's own rating count has stayed flat.
- Charts: it has only been on the Lifestyle category top-grossing chart, never on any country's overall free chart. From 10-28 to 10-31, 1–3 countries had it on the Lifestyle free chart; none since 11-01 (appstore database, app_day daily counts). Best rank by country: Cayman Islands #2 (with local ratings of 0,11-06 it also reached #87 on the Cayman overall top-grossing chart), Nepal #10 (overall top-grossing #137), Yemen #17, Panama #23, Grenada #26, Nicaragua #27, Israel #34, Oman #34, Jordan #36, New Zealand #36, Bahrain #38, Kuwait #48, UAE #64, Saudi Arabia #86, Italy #95 (database). A third-party chart site recorded it at Italy Lifestyle top-grossing #63–64, tagged "new" (appbrain.com; applyra.io recorded #91).
- How to read it: the bar for small-country Lifestyle top-grossing charts is very low. In Cayman, 0 ratings were enough to rank #2, which means a few purchases a day is enough. It charts in the Middle East (UAE, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Qatar, Oman, Bahrain, Jordan), Israel and Turkey, but ratings aren't rising. That's the pattern of "a few large-spending users plus low traffic", not users flooding in. Looking at charted countries going from 31→18 and the top-50 countries in the category chart going from 8→4, the peak was before late October and it's now in decline.
3. Competitors (doing the same thing = overseas 1v1 video / stranger chat, monetized with coins)
| Product | Where | Launched | Scale | How Jamo differs | |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Azar(Hyperconnect / Match Group) | iOS / Android | 2015 | Charted in 110 iOS stores, combined ratings across stores about 848k (appstore database) | Big legit brands openly run video-chat apps, ranking top 3 in Middle East revenue (Agora blog); Jamo is a small app dressed up as a guitar case | |
| BIGO LIVE | iOS / Android | 2016 | Charted in 110 stores, combined ratings about 770k, best overall chart #20 (database) | Live streaming plus tipping, its own brand; Jamo has no brand and no content ecosystem | |
| MICO: Make Friends, Go Live | iOS / Android | 2014 | Charted in 81 stores, best overall chart #68 (database) | Long-running Middle East social live-streaming | |
| HIYAK - Video Chat & Live Call | iOS | 2021 | Charted in 62 stores, best Lifestyle rank #9, combined ratings about 8.2K (database) | Also a Chinese team making 1v1, but the name and description say video chat outright, and it's an order of magnitude bigger | |
| Chamet / LivU and other Chinese going-global 1v1 leaders | Mainly on Android | 2019–2020 | Agora says Chamet and LivU are among the top 3 Middle East 1v1 earners; from 2025-08, Turkey's BTK blocked nearly 30 social apps including Azar, LivU and Tango (36kr) | Top players; small clones like Jamo fill the iOS gap left after those were banned and pulled | |
| Bobo - GO Chat \ | Video,Social(GRAYSON PARKER) | iOS | 2026-09-16 | Charted in 30 stores, best Lifestyle rank #20 (database) | Same-period clones with video chat right in the name; they show up in Jamo's "also bought" list |
| Funuo - Video Chat & Meet (individual developer "Bing Li") | iOS | 2026-07-21 | Charted in 9 stores, best Lifestyle rank #20 (database) | Clones under individual developer accounts | |
| A group of single-app "XX Culture Media Co., Ltd." clones | iOS | 2026-05 to 11 | Varonexa (Dalian) in 17 stores, Vokoo (Shandong) in 6 stores, Josiie: Plant Chat (Guizhou, plant-community skin), Tange (Xiamen), Sparrow (Linyi), Pinkshow (Xiamen), Yoomi (Qingdao), Kiara (Dezhou, 11-03 newly charted), Yukoi (Hangzhou, 11-03 newly charted) (database) | Same playbook: media companies in different cities act as developers, one app per company, described as an "interest community", with Chat / Share / Live in the name |
No real competitor offering a "guitar co-creation community" was found. Guitar is just the shell, so the chat products above are what it should really be compared with.
4. Growth tactics: where users come from
- Review-passing shell (Side A / Side B): confirmed. The store description says guitar, while the in-app purchases, co-purchase list, reviews and age rating all point to dating and chat. In Chinese developer circles this is called a "clone package": Side A is shown to the reviewer at submission, and after approval a remote switch flips to Side B (covered by LTVestbagDemo, Zhihu zhuanlan.zhihu.com/p/661390942, and CSDN). The rename from "Guitar Co-creation" to "Share & Chat" is also evidence.
- One-company-one-app matrix: strong inference. In the same period the database holds a dozen-plus "XX Culture Media Co., Ltd." entities each running one chat app. Takedown of one doesn't implicate the others. Not proven that they share the same operator.
- Ad buys: inferred, not confirmed. It's not on any free chart and its rating isn't climbing, so organic traffic (store search, chart exposure) is mostly ruled out. Having paying users in the Middle East, Israel, Turkey, South Asia and the Caribbean at once points most likely to Meta / TikTok / Google performance ads, or affiliate ads. Our metaads library doesn't track Jamo or Jiuyueban (it only covers products on our list), and tiktokads only collects ads running in Europe, so neither shows anything.
- Review farming: suspected. The US store shows 369 ratings averaging 4.7 stars, and the reviews are generic few-word comments unrelated to the product.
- Content and creators: none. TikTok (searching "Jamo app" via TikHub), X (x-radar, 90 days), Reddit and news show nobody discussing it. Search only turns up store pages and chart aggregator sites.
- Platform events and timing: background factor. Since the second half of 2025, Turkey, the US, the UAE and Saudi Arabia have pulled 1v1 social apps in bulk, and Turkey's BTK banned around 30 apps including Azar, LivU and Tango (36kr's "2025 overseas social roundup"). When the big brands get pulled or banned, the new shell apps get a window to capture the paying demand left behind, until Apple or local regulators catch up.
5. Why it could "run" at all
- It used a guitar-community description plus an "AI guitar assistant" pitch to pass Apple review, while the real function is stranger chat and video. Evidence: the in-app purchases are 10 tiers of $0.99–$99.99 coin packs; the "also bought" list is all dating apps; reviews say "site", "more free stuff", "girls".
- Monetization runs on a small number of big-spending paying users. Ratings barely move in any country, yet it charts in 18–31 countries' Lifestyle Top Grossing, with Cayman 0 rated #2 and Nepal #10. In the Middle East, 1v1 has always been a business of landing whales (per an industry insider quoted by enjoyglobal).
- It picked low-barrier categories and countries. It sits in Lifestyle, not the fiercely contested Social Networking category, and most of the charting countries are small; big markets (US, Japan, Saudi Arabia) only briefly appeared near the bottom of the charts.
- It landed in the gap left after the top 1v1 apps were blocked and pulled. Starting in 2025-08, Turkey's BTK blocked nearly 30 social apps, and several countries pulled apps in bulk.
6. Differentiation
There's no product differentiation. The guitar co-creation shell exists to satisfy reviewers; users never see it (not one review mentions guitars). What actually counts as "different" is the operating playbook: an obscure theme (hobby communities like guitars or plants), a local media company as the developer entity, and Lifestyle placement to dodge the competition and scrutiny of the Social category. These explain how it got listed and charted, but they're copyable with no barrier to entry, and the lifespan is short: 3 months without an update, and the peak has already passed.
7. How many people know it / has anyone copied it
- Awareness: very little. No public revenue, no media coverage, no discussion on X, TikTok or Reddit; only chart aggregator sites index it.
- Copycats: not really a copy of this one. The playbook is standard across the industry, and new similar apps launched the same week, such as Kiara (11-03), Yukoi (11-03), Pinkshow (10-21), Yoomi (10-22) and Bobo (09-16).
8. What to borrow
- Top Grossing charts in small-country categories are easy to crack. If you want to validate a paid model, test a few low-barrier countries first and estimate revenue from the rankings. That approach works.
- To judge what an app actually does, ignore the description. Check the in-app purchase tiers, the "also bought" list, the age rating and content labels, and the raw reviews. They're far more reliable than the description.
- When reading our own data, note that daily_all_countries.total_ratings only counts countries charting that day, so a drop doesn't mean reviews were deleted. The recall rule is better set to look at each country's ratings separately.
- Not recommended to copy. This path carries compliance risk: Apple's 2.3.1 guideline (hidden features) and 4.3 guideline (duplicate apps), plus the wave of country-wide removals. The Jining case that busted "40 shell-app dating scams" used female chat hosts to induce top-ups (Juejin 2025-12-18).
9. Still unclear
- Real revenue and downloads: no third-party figures can be verified. Appfigures and Similarweb have pages, but they're behind a login.
- Whether it's run by the same operator as other "culture media" shell apps, or uses the same chat SDK: not verified.
- Which ad channels were used and what the creatives were: not in our library, not verified.
- Whether there are real human hosts, "female chat hosts" or AI companions: not tested by installing it; inferred from the in-app purchases and the "also bought" list as paid chat.
