# 5 ratings and a surge to the top of the Portugal Top Grossing chart: an app that helps TAP crews work out how much the company underpaid

**What it is** A rostering app for TAP Air Portugal pilots and cabin crew: import your roster, check it against flight-time rules and company agreements, calculate allowances and pay, then reconcile line by line against your payslip.

**Why it took off** TAP crews and the company have been fighting over allowances for years, and everyone suspects they're being shortchanged. One error caught by this app is enough to cover two years of subscription, so it spread through coworkers and WhatsApp groups, and a few dozen annual purchases pushed it onto the Portugal small charts.

**B** **How you could follow it** Don't copy TAP, copy the approach: pick a workplace you know, with variable pay and labor disputes, turn the collective agreement into a reconciliation tool, cold-start it through coworker groups, and once it works at one company, replicate it company by company.

Grade B: the demand is real and willingness to pay is high, and outsiders barely see it. But each agreement only covers a few thousand people, and the rules can only be written by insiders, so a single day on the charts doesn't show whether it can hold. Spreading in small circles

A Portuguese developer wrote TAP Air Portugal's labor agreement into an iPhone app: import your roster, check it clause by clause, calculate allowances and pay, then reconcile it line by line against the payslip the company sends. Six weeks after launch it had only 5 ratings, yet in Nov 6 it reached #20 on the Portugal Productivity Top Grossing chart for the first time. The users are few enough to count, but each one is willing to pay. Below: why it sells, how it spread, and whether you can build the same thing in another industry.

### A review from launch day

On 2026 Sep 26, Roster Mate launched on the Portugal App Store. That same morning a five-star review came in from xPsych0x, a long one: it's a tool for aviation workers whose pay has a big variable part, and it can read all kinds of caps, plafond, rostering rules, plus company agreements (AE) and FTL limits. "Development speed is insane, new features and bug fixes come out really fast." The last line was:

"Thanks to the developer, the errors this app caught this month alone already cover 2 years of the subscription."

A second five-star review the same day was signed with a real name. Two long reviews on day one of a new app most likely means the developer knows the first users, who are probably his coworkers.

The developer, Bruno Afonso, has only this one app. By Nov 6, it had just 5 ratings in Portugal (App Store, 11-06), yet it charted for the first time: #20 in Productivity Top Grossing, sandwiched between Manus AI and Microsoft Excel; #145 overall Top Grossing. From Oct 28 to Nov 5 it was off the charts entirely, and outside Portugal it charted nowhere.

### What it actually does

In one line: it turns a TAP crew member's monthly roster into a checklist that tells you whether it's compliant, how much you should be paid, and whether the company underpaid you.

- **Import** : pull in from the iPhone calendar or the monthly roster PDF the company sends. The site specifically says "no account password, no scraping the company portal."

- **Check** : every flight duty is checked against two layers of rules: EASA flight time limitations (FTL) and TAP's company agreement. Results come in three grades: compliant, needs review (allowed by EASA but not by the agreement), or violation. Tap any result to see the original clause. Whether rest time is sufficient is also broken down clause by clause under the agreement.

- **Calculate** : meal allowances, daily travel allowance (per diem), overnight allowances, block/duty pay and plafond, calculated to the minute.

- **Reconcile** : compare item by item against your company payslip and allowance statements.

Pilots and cabin crew each have their own set of rules. Pilots can also photograph the ACARS screen to automatically log takeoff and landing times and generate an EASA-format logbook. All data stays on the phone and never touches a server. Pricing: free to download, with two months of roster trial for free. Pro is €5.99 a month or €69.99 a year (Portugal store page, 11-06).

Crews at other airlines can use it too, but they only get pure EASA rules. The full version is for TAP only.

### Why people are willing to pay

Because this is directly about money, and TAP crews are especially sensitive about it.

TAP and the cabin crew union have been fighting over allowances for years: in 2023 TAP paid out €8M in allowance arrears (ECO, 2023-01); in 2025 a new allowance table in February cut many destinations, and the union declared "social peace over" (Expresso, Público, 2025-02); in 2025 the Constitutional Court rejected TAP's appeal in July, and TAP set aside €37.2M for crew lawsuits (Jornal SOL, 2025-07). By 2026, with Lufthansa's stake and privatization moving forward in October, labor issues heated up again.

Among these crews, "the company might be shorting me" is a common suspicion. But the agreement has hundreds of clauses, with variable-pay rules scattered throughout, and checking it by hand in a spreadsheet takes an entire evening. A tool that reconciles item by item pays for itself easily: €69.99 a year, and one caught error covers it. That's what the review said.

Portugal is also a small market, so the bar to chart is low. A few dozen people paying annual fees in the same week is enough to push it to #20 in Productivity. Early November is right when October payslips and allowance statements arrive, and the first trial users are also coming up on expiry, so this chart spike is most likely from that batch of paid conversions. With only one day of chart data, no trend can be calculated.

### Where users come from

No ads, no influencers. Searches for its name on X have turned up nothing in 60 days, and no media coverage. All the spread happens inside a circle outsiders can't see:

- **Among coworkers** . The site says: "The best ideas come from colleagues who used it on real shifts."

- **WhatsApp group** . On Oct 15 their official blog posted "Nova comunidade no WhatsApp"; every new version now gets announced in the group first, and feature requests come in there too.

- **A shareable settings file** . Version 1.0.3 added a feature that packages meal allowances, per diems, hotels and handover rules into one file you can send straight to a coworker. One person sets it up, and the whole crew can use it.

- **Store search** . Search "tripulantes" or "escala tripulante" in the Portugal store and it ranks in the top three. Almost nobody is competing for these terms (App Store Portugal search, 11-06).

Add to that how fast they shipped: 10 versions in six weeks. When someone found that the rest-day parsing was wrong for November28, the blog post explaining it went up the same day, and the fix shipped on 1.1.1. In a small community that runs on word of mouth, that speed is advertising in itself.

The developer is very likely a TAP pilot or instructor, judging by the update notes: "flights flown as TRE only go into the logbook when you're captain," "instructors flying simulators are paid per the TAP plafond table, overnight crossings count as two allowances, rest days add 10%," and they cite clause numbers. Outsiders couldn't write those details. No verifiable LinkedIn profile turned up.

### Who it's competing with

| Competitors | What it is | Scale | Why nothing has stopped it |
|---|---|---|---|
| RosterBuster (owned by CAE) | Global crew roster calendar plus social | Claims 400k crew users, 2,104 ratings in the US store | Doesn't understand the TAP agreement, doesn't calculate pay, doesn't reconcile payslips |
| CrewLounge CONNECT / PILOTLOG | Calendar plus logbook | 335 / 134 ratings in the US store | Only generic FTL |
| FTLmate (Portuguese company Yellow Pad) | Also covers the TAP pilot agreement's FTL rules and can import TAP rosters | 0 ratings, listed on 2024-09 | Only calculates time limits, not allowance pay; no reconciliation; incomplete cabin crew rules |
| EASA FTL calculator types | Manual-entry calculators, one-time €2–8 | 0–6 ratings | No roster import, no company agreement |
| A batch of roster-plus-fatigue apps that appeared in 2026 | Generic tools | 0–1 ratings | None are tied to a single airline |
| rostermate.be | Shift-swap matching and compliance checks for Brussels Airlines crews (web) | Homepage says "1,336 crew members have joined" | Same-named, unrelated; but its "one airline, one build" approach has worked elsewhere too |

Generic players built for "nice-looking rosters"; FTLmate built for "is it compliant." Roster Mate is currently the only one that calculates the money in the agreement and reconciles it against payslips. That step is why users pay.

### Can you copy it?

Not directly. TAP is already taken, and its developer is inside the crew. What you can copy is the approach: **one employer, one collective agreement, one app, with the selling point being "finds what the company underpaid you"** .

Good employers for this: large workforces where a big share of pay is variable (allowances, overtime, night shifts, holiday multipliers), rules written in a thick agreement, tense labor relations, and staff already suspicious they're being shortchanged. Outside airlines, railway crews, hospital nurses, port workers, firefighters and police overtime fit the same shape.

The difficulties are just as clear. An agreement covers very few people: TAP has roughly 1,200–1,800 pilots plus about 2,700 cabin crew (El País 2018, ECO 2023), so even if everyone paid, annual revenue would be in the hundreds of thousands of euros at most. So building for one employer can only be a side project; to scale, you have to replicate it employer by employer. Roster Mate itself left room for "other airlines only get EASA rules," so the next step is most likely SATA / Azores Airlines or Portugália within the TAP group (inference). Another difficulty is rules that change: after Lufthansa's stake, the agreement and company systems may both change, and the rules engine has to be rewritten.

One gap nobody has filled: both the store page and the website list iOS only, with no Android version, so crew members on Android are not yet covered.

### If it were you

**Verdict** : the approach is real and overlooked, but each agreement is a tiny market, and writing the rules takes insider knowledge. It fits as a side-project starting point for someone who knows the industry; it's hard to plan as a business.

**Who it suits** : someone who works at a large employer, can read their own collective agreement, and has coworkers constantly calculating allowances: pilots, cabin crew, train staff, nurses, or their families.

**Who it doesn't suit** : developers outside the industry with no internal colleague circle. You won't get roster PDFs or payslip samples, you won't get into that WhatsApp group, and nobody will trust what you build.

**How to do it:**

1. Pick your own workplace and start with only the reconciliation: take the roster PDFs and payslips employees already have, don't touch company systems, don't ask for logins, and keep data on the phone.

2. Cite the original agreement clause behind every judgment, so coworkers can take it to HR.

3. Price against "one caught error pays for it": a few euros a month or a few tens of euros a year, with a free trial over one pay cycle.

4. Once the first employer works, bring in an insider from another one and replicate the build for each; ship both iOS and Android.

**How to get users** : your own coworkers, industry WhatsApp / Telegram groups, union groups; build a one-tap shareable "rules settings file"; anchor store keywords on the local terms your industry uses (terms like "escala tripulante" that almost nobody is fighting over). No paid acquisition needed.

**When to move** : there's no clear window. These opportunities don't expire quickly; the real risk is that the employer or union releases an official tool first. Launch during the months of labor negotiations or allowance disputes, when staff are most sensitive about money and most willing to pay.

**How to tell you misread it:** If Roster Mate drops off the charts and its ratings sit in single digits for the next few weeks, then 11-06 was just a few annual plans that happened to land. Or, if you build it for your own workplace, and in the month payroll goes out your coworkers try it but don't renew, then "catching underpayments" doesn't happen as often as it seems, and this path won't work in your industry.

## Roster Mate (iOS id6786210984): why it showed up

> Research date 2026-11-06. Sources: our appstore database (chart_rank / app_day, from 2026-10-28), Apple lookup and the Portuguese store page, the official site rostermateapp.com (homepage / FAQ / blog), Jina / Exa / Brave search, x-radar. Anything unverified is marked "unverified".

### One line

Roster Mate is a Portuguese iPhone app in Portuguese, made by a solo Portuguese developer (Bruno Afonso, whose only listed app this is), for **TAP Air Portugal pilots and cabin crew** . It imports monthly rosters (the company's PDF "Individual duty plan" or iCal), checks each entry against **EASA FTL and the TAP company agreement (Acordo de Empresa, AE)** , then calculates meal allowances, per diems, plafond, and block/duty pay, and finally **reconciles item by item against the payslip and allowance PDFs the company issues** . Launched 2026-09-26; in 6 weeks it had only 5 ratings, and 11-06 it first charted: #20 in the Portuguese productivity Top Grossing and #145 overall Top Grossing.

### 1. Basic data

| items | value | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Launched | 2026-09-26, Portuguese only, iPhone only | Apple lookup |
| Release cadence | 6 weeks, 10 releases (1.0 → 1.1.3,11-05) | Store version history |
| Pricing | Free to download; Pro is €5.99/month or €69.99/year; you can try it first with "two months of rosters", and data is kept when the trial ends | In-app purchase list on the PT store page; official site |
| Rating | 5 ratings, 5.0 stars | Lookup / store page |
| Charted | Only in the pt store: #20 in productivity Top Grossing and #145 overall Top Grossing on 2026-11-06; no charting records in our database from 10-28 to 11-05 | appstore.chart_rank |
| Chart neighbors | Productivity Top Grossing #19 Manus AI, #21 Microsoft Excel; overall Top Grossing #144 Bingo Voyage, #146 Spoke | appstore.v_chart 2026-11-06 |
| Official domain | rostermateapp.com registered 2026-10-02 (registered only after launch) | who.is new domain list (search snippet, not directly WHOIS-checked) |

How to read these numbers: Portugal is a small market, so reaching overall Top Grossing #145 and productivity #20 takes little; a few annual subscriptions (€69.99) landing together is enough. **11-06 was its first day on the charts, and there is only this one data point, so no trend can be calculated.** The rating count has stayed at 5, so downloads were probably in the dozens to hundreds (speculation, unverified). Early November is exactly when October's payslips and allowance documents came out, and when the earliest trial users started paying, so the chart debut may reflect that batch of subscriptions (speculation).

### 2. Competitors

| Competitors | Platform | Launched | Scale | How Roster Mate differs |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| RosterBuster(CAE) | iOS / Android | 2015 | Self-reported 400k crew users; 2,104 ratings in the US store. The database shows it charting in 11-06 stores' Top Grossing charts, best ranked #106 in Travel in pt store 56. | Global and generic: roster sync, social features, layovers; doesn't understand TAP's AE, doesn't calculate money, doesn't reconcile payslips |
| CrewLounge CONNECT / PILOTLOG(Aviovision) | iOS / Android | 2019 | US store 335 / 134 ratings; pt Business Top Grossing #33–#133 (10 days) | Calendar plus logbook; FTL is only a generic feature; no Portuguese company agreement or pay rules |
| FTLmate (Yellow Pad, Lda, a Portuguese company) | iOS | 2024-09 | 0 ratings; October appeared once on the pt productivity Top Grossing chart (#167) | **The most direct competitor** : also covers TAP-SPAC FTL rules (the pilots' union 2023 version of the AE) and can import TAP PDOV rosters; but it only checks time limits, not allowances or pay, does no reconciliation, and lacks the full set of cabin crew rules |
| EASA FTL Calc / EASA vs Airline FTL, etc. | iOS | 2015–2017 | 0–6 ratings, one-time purchase €2–€8 | Plain calculators with manual input |
| Crewops, MyRoster, AirRoster, Callout and other newer apps | iOS | 2026 | 0–1 ratings | A batch of generic "roster + FTL / fatigue" apps that appeared in 2026, none hardcoded to a single airline's agreement |
| LogTen, FLYLOG.io, logbook.aero | iOS / web | 2014–2016 | LogTen has about 100 ratings on the US store | Logbooks only; Roster Mate can import their CSVs, effectively treating them as a data source |
| rostermate.be | Web | 2026 (exact date unverified) | Homepage says "1,336 crew members have joined" | **Only for Brussels Airlines (SN) crew** : shift-swap matching plus compliance checks. It shares a name with this product but has no connection, showing that the "one airline, one tool" approach works elsewhere too |
| Airline official portals (TAP Portal DOV), union calculation sheets | Big players / others | — | All TAP staff | Official rosters and documents are available, but they won't help staff check whether the company underpaid them |

Bottom line: **Generic roster apps have big players (RosterBuster), and the only one built for TAP is FTLmate, which stops at compliance. Roster Mate is currently the only product that builds TAP's pay and allowance rules and also reconciles payslips.**

### 3. Where users came from (growth tactics)

| Channel | Evidence | Confirmed? |
|---|---|---|
| Started through word of mouth among colleagues and personal networks | Of the store's 5 reviews, 2 were written on launch day (26/09), one signed with a real name; a review says "the app caught an error this month that paid for 2 years of subscription." The website says "the best ideas all came from colleagues who used it on real shifts" | Confirmed (reviews on launch day suggest the developer knew the first users) |
| WhatsApp community | 2026-10-15 official blog post "Nova comunidade no WhatsApp": every new version is posted in the group, and feature requests are collected there | Confirmed |
| The "company settings" file is forwarded between colleagues | 1.0.3 added a feature: meal allowances, subsidies, hotels, and handover rules packed into one file to send to colleagues | Confirmed (the feature itself encourages forwarding) |
| Search / SEO | The website was only registered 2026-10-02 ago. The blog has version notes only, no real content | Weak |
| Store search | Searching "tripulantes", "escala tripulante", "piloto escala" in the PT store, it ranks in the top 1–3 (almost nobody is targeting these terms) | Confirmed (itunes search, pt) |
| Ads / creators / X / Reddit / TikTok | x-radar search for "Roster Mate" and "rostermateapp": 60 posts in 0 days; search engines show no media or forum coverage | None found |

### 4. Why it took off

2. **The developer is inside the industry.** Release notes mention details like "TRE flights count toward logbook only when acting as captain" and "instructors flying simulators are paid per TAP's plafond table, overnight shifts are paid as two allowances, rest-day work gets a 10% premium," along with clause numbers (Cl. 10.ª, 39.ª, 15.11). Outsiders couldn't write that. The developer is likely a TAP pilot or instructor (inference; LinkedIn turned up nothing to confirm).

3. **Shipping fast, and users are sticking around** : 6 versions in 10 weeks; reviews praise "incredibly fast development, new features and bug fixes"; when 10-28 found that November rest-day parsing was broken, they posted an explanation on the blog that day, and fixed it by the next day 1.1.1.

4. **Low paywall, no scary trial.** The monthly price of €5.99 is negligible next to crew income. When the trial ends, data isn't deleted and the calculations keep running, which lowers the barrier to trying it.

5. **Privacy by design removes the worry.** No account sign-up, no server round-trips, no scraping of company portals ("Sem credenciais nem scraping"); all data stays on the phone. Crew don't have to worry about breaking company IT rules or risking account bans, which matters a lot in a sensitive labor-relations context.

6. **Timing (weak evidence)** : In 2026, October saw TAP's partial privatization move forward (Lufthansa taking a stake), and CNN Portugal 10-14 reported that "TAP employees keep their individual company agreements." Labor talk is hot and staff are more sensitive to their own pay, but there's no evidence this directly drove downloads.

### 5. Differentiation

- **Going deep on one vertical.** Rivals are either shift calendars (RosterBuster, CrewLounge) or FTL calculators (FTLmate, EASA FTL Calc). Roster Mate goes all the way through one airline and one agreement: roster → compliance (two layers, EASA plus AE, with results graded compliant / needs review / violation, and each item citing the clause text) → allowance and pay estimates → **checking the pay slips and allowance vouchers the company issues as PDFs** . That last step is what no rival has, and it's why users are willing to pay.

- It covers both cabin crew and pilot rules; it photographs ACARS screens and OCRs them to log OOOI; it generates EASA logbooks compliant with AMC1 FCL.050; METAR/TAF, widgets, and iCloud sync are all features that get people opening it every day.

- **This is why it broke out.** With a tiny user base it still hit the Top Grossing chart, because the value is "we help you claw back money," not roster display. The differentiation itself is the growth engine.

### 6. How visible it is

- Revenue isn't public; no TrustMRR listing, and no founder has posted revenue. X (x-radar): 0 posts; media: 0 articles; Reddit / TikTok: none found.

- Spread is limited to TAP crew WhatsApp groups and word of mouth among colleagues. **It's "being passed around within a small circle,"** and it's a closed industry community that outsiders can't see.

- Copycats: none found yet. FTLmate came earlier; rostermate.be is a separate project for another airline, not a copycat.

### 7. What others can learn

- **One employer, one agreement, one app.** Pick an institution with many staff, a large variable share of pay, and tense labor relations (airlines, railways, hospital nurse scheduling, ports, police and fire overtime pay). Turn the collective agreement into a rules engine, and sell it on "finding the money the company shorted you," not "pretty rosters."

- It doesn't touch company systems. It only uses PDFs, iCal files, and screenshots that employees already have, so compliance risk is low and launch is fast.

- WhatsApp groups within the community plus a shareable "company settings file" mean cold start costs nothing.

- One market is too small (TAP has roughly 1,200–1,800 pilots plus about 2,700 cabin crew, data from El País 2018 and ECO 2023), so growth has to come from "copy the setup for each airline": the app already has an "other company" mode that uses only EASA rules. SATA / Azores Airlines and Portugália (which has its own AE within the TAP group) are the nearest next stops.

### 8. Still unclear

- Actual paying users and revenue: only one day of chart data, possibly a few annual subscriptions landing together. Whether it holds up over the next few weeks is the real test.

- Whether the developer is a current TAP pilot or instructor: unverified.

- Whether the "two-month trial" is counted by time or by two months of roster data (the website says "two months of roster"). When the first trials expire determines the shape of the conversion curve.

- Whether TAP or the union will ship an official tool, or restrict tools like this. After Lufthansa's stake, agreements and systems may change, and the rules engine would need rewriting.

- Whether there's an Android version: the store page and website only mention iOS. If there really isn't one, half of crew (Android users) are not covered.
