A talking capybara that "swears" brings in 5,000 installs a day: how Brazil's AI English app Comigo took off

What it is An English-learning app for Brazilians: live voice chat with a cartoon AI capybara, speaking lessons and mini-games, paywall at the door, most installs on Android.

Why it took off Brazilians already love the capybara meme, and the AI capybara's weird replies make funny short videos. The developer runs several "ordinary people learning English" TikTok accounts posting daily. The top video hit 1.2M views, and the comments keep asking "what's this app called?" The name comigo is the search term.

AHow you could copy it Don't head into Brazil head-on. Pick a market with big English demand and Android dominance (Spanish-speaking Latin America, Indonesia, Turkey, etc.), use a local meme animal plus AI speaking practice, and run 3–5 persona accounts posting the same format daily. On pricing, give a few free conversations before charging, and go after the "can't try it without paying" pain point.

Grade A: the playbook is clear, it spends almost nothing on ads, the grossing chart shows people are paying, and competitors mostly haven't noticed. The bet is whether the content can go viral in a new market. Aispeak, a similar concept, never took off in the Spanish market. Word is spreading in small circles

A small company registered in Ohio, USA, built an app where you speak English with an AI capybara. It doesn't seem to run ads (at least none visible from outside). Several "ordinary girls learning English" TikTok accounts post roughly the same video every day. Over 4 months it reached 258K+ installs on Google Play, hit #4 on Brazil's Education free chart and around #20–30 on the grossing chart. The features aren't new. What's new is the distribution. Below: how it works, where the money comes from, its weak spots, and whether the playbook works in another country.

A 1.2M-view video

On the morning of Oct 2, 2026, TikTok account @sophia.comigo posted a 22-second vertical video: a girl holds her phone and talks by voice with a cartoon capybara on screen. The caption is one line: "Eu me divirto com a capivara do app "comigo" 😭🤣" (I'm having a blast with the capybara in the app "comigo"). As of 11-06, the video has 1.2M views, 74K likes, 17K shares and 1,191 comments (TikHub, 11-06).

The most-liked comment, 4,139 likes: "MDS A CAPIVARA XINGOU 😂" (OMG the capybara swore). The joke seems to be the capybara translating a few Portuguese words into English, and the English sounds like cursing to Portuguese ears (inference from comments like "fala para ela falar peixe bola gato em inglês"). Scrolling down, there are dozens of identical questions: "qual o nome do app", "como é o nome desse app", "nome do app da capivara". What's the name of this capybara app?

Another comment with 279 likes: "amo que todas tem a mesma reação" (I love that they all have the same reaction). Viewers noticed it themselves: it's the same format, filmed over and over.

What it is

Comigo - Speak Languages, developer KPI 22 LLC (address Canton, OH; the kpi22.com site says "AI consumer software studio, Comigo is our first app"). It teaches Portuguese speakers English, and English speakers Portuguese on the side. You start speaking right away: answer questions in voice lessons, get pronunciation feedback on each word, or chat freely in real time with the capybara "Capy." There are also mini-games, flashcards, an English alarm clock, and a mode that locks social apps until you finish a lesson.

Praktika, Speak and Duolingo Video Call each have some of these features. The one real difference is that a cartoon capybara with a big mouth and a sense of humor coaches your speaking, not a realistic human tutor.

  • Launched on Android 2026-06-25, iOS came three months later (09-23)
  • Google Play: 10-29 has 214,494 installs, 11-06 has 258,403,8 days over 44K, about 5,500 a day; ratings 6,046 → 9,578, average 4.7
  • Brazil Play Education Top Free: 10-29 at #10, 11-06 at #4; Education Top Grossing has held #23–30 every day since 10-31
  • iOS is secondary: 424 ratings worldwide (379 in Brazil), #12 on Brazil's Education free chart, never on the grossing chart

Why it's hot now: the capybara, an account network, a name that's easy to search

The capybara is already a meme in Brazil. The capybara is native to Brazil and a common cute figure online. The line "AI capybara helps you practice English" is funny by itself, and the AI voice's odd replies deliver the "surprise" short videos need.

The content comes from accounts the developer runs itself, not one-off influencers. Searching "app comigo" on TikTok turns up almost only these accounts:

AccountFollowersHow they write their bios

@fluentecom.sophiaematt57English-language content that pushes "learn Portuguese" in reverse

(TikHub,11-06)

The earliest videos were posted on Aug 7 and 9, back when there was only an Android version. Now @sophia.comigo posts one to two a day. Of the 10 posts from 10-30 to 11-05, the captions are all variations of "I'm having so much fun with comigo's capybara," with the hashtags #inglescomigo #aprenderingles. Most get only a few thousand to twenty thousand views, but the one from 11-01 hit 420K, and 11-02 and 11-03 each have one at 120K and 160K. This is a bet-on-a-hit play: the cost is one video a day, and one hit is enough. The same videos are also reposted to Instagram Reels and YouTube Shorts.

The name is the search term. "comigo" is an ordinary Portuguese word ("with me"), easy to say and remember, and the captions repeat "o app se chama "comigo"" (the app is called "comigo"). TikTok has auto-generated topic pages like "App De Ingles Capivara Nome Do App". Viewers really are searching "what's the name of the capybara English app." The path from watching the video to finding it in the store is as short as it gets.

Brazil plus Android means a low bar. Most Brazilians use Android, and the bar for the top 10 on Play's Education free chart is low: a little over five thousand installs a day gets you to #4. The timing lines up: the period when TikTok posting was densest, 10-27 to 11-05, is when the Play chart climbed from #13 to #4.

Two smaller moves: it built a review site, comigoreviews.com, turning store reviews into individual pages (links carry utm_source=comigoreviews, official). The official blog also publishes grammar articles for English speakers learning Portuguese, capturing long-tail search. The Meta Ad Library shows no ads from it, but that doesn't prove it isn't advertising (TikTok Spark Ads aren't visible from outside).

Where the money comes from: paywall at the door

US store description, verbatim: "hard paywall: a subscription is required to enter the app". No subscription, no entry. Brazil App Store page prices (11-06):

TierPricing
Weekly subscriptionR$39.90 / R$59.90
Monthly subscriptionR$99.90
Annual subscriptionR$249.90 – R$599.90 (several tiers)

Several tiers are listed at once, which looks like price testing (inference). On Play, in-app purchases run $5.99–$149.99, plus "invite 3 friends, get 1 months free".

For Brazilian students this is expensive, and the bad reviews say so bluntly (App Store Brazil, 10-30 to 11-01):

"Tem que pagar para testar. Não tem como testar sem pagar." (You have to pay to try it. There's no way to test it without paying.)
"App todo pago, só para quem PODE pagar para aprender!" (The whole app is paid, only for people who CAN pay to learn!)
"O app é muito lento… demora muito para responder." (The app is very slow… it takes forever to respond.)

But on Play, it holds steady at #23–#30 on Brazil's education Top Grossing chart, which means plenty of the 250k installs are paying. Acquisition is almost entirely self-made video, revenue comes straight from subscriptions, so unit economics are probably positive (inference; revenue is not public).

The rating needs a closer look. The Play average is 4.7, but a lot of the 5-star reviews are just "legal" or "muito bom", one or two words. The distribution is odd too: 1-star and 4-star reviews are 563 each, while the 2- and 3-star counts are 0. That points to an in-app prompt nudging for good reviews, and it's hard to say whether it's fake. On iOS Brazil the average is only 4.09, and most recent reviews are 1-star.

CapyEnglish, Capy EnglishVery smallA copycat Brazilian web version pitching "100% free", siphoning off users the paywall scared away

(Google Play / App Store data, 11-06)

The most interesting case is Aispeak: it tried the same concept a year earlier in the Spanish market and it didn't take off. The difference is execution. Comigo runs multiple accounts, posts daily, uses consistent copy, and its name is the search term. The idea itself is worth little; daily filming is what counts.

How many people know about it

Ordinary Brazilian TikTok users have seen it millions of times, yet almost nobody in the indie-app crowd talks about it. Revenue is not public, there's no discussion on X, and no media coverage. Only two tiny Brazilian web copycats. This is a stage where consumers know about it but peers haven't noticed yet.

If it were you

One-line verdict: worth chasing, but not the "capybara" itself. Chase the playbook: a local meme animal + AI speaking + daily posting from self-run persona accounts, applied in a different country.

Who it's for: 1–3 people, where at least one of them is willing (or can find someone) to post a short video every day, and is a native speaker of the target market who gets the local memes; the other can wire up real-time voice AI and bring the latency down.

Who it doesn't suit: anyone aiming to head-to-head Comigo and Praktika in Brazil; anyone unwilling to make content and relying on store organic traffic or paid ads (the paid-ads lane already has Langla, with 7k installs in 800 days); anyone who can't film and won't hire people on camera.

How to do it: pick a market with strong English-learning demand, mostly Android, and a low bar on the education chart. Spanish-speaking Latin America, Indonesia, Turkey, and Vietnam are worth checking first (inference, I haven't verified each chart). Pick an animal or character locals laugh at on sight, and name it with an ordinary word that's easy to say locally. Copy Comigo's skeleton: voice lessons + free chat with the character + mini-games. AI replies have to be fast; that's its second most common complaint. On payments, don't copy the hard paywall outright: give 3 free conversations or 3 days of trial before charging. That hits its "can't try without paying" pain point and also blocks the "100% free" copycat sites from siphoning users. (This is a bet: a hard paywall converts harder and may be why it reaches the Top Grossing chart.)

How to get users: start 3–5 persona accounts posing as "ordinary learners", with bios reading "[App name] ambassador", one shared line of copy and one hashtag, 1–2 posts per account per day. The content is one person having a voice chat with the character, with the character saying something unexpected. Repeat the app name in the copy. For the first 30 days, ignore views on individual posts and watch whether comments start asking "what's this app called?"; once they do, add accounts and post more often. Also build a review aggregation page on the side.

When to move: Comigo currently supports only Portuguese and English, and its iOS version is only two months old. Launching a new language market within 3 months is best. Any later, and Comigo itself or paid-acquisition players like Langla will likely roll out Spanish and Indonesian versions first.

Signs you've misread it: ① your accounts post daily for 60 days and no single post breaks 100k views, and no one in the comments asks the app's name. The format doesn't work in your market; Aispeak is the cautionary tale. ② Comigo drops out of the top 50 on Play's Brazil education Top Grossing chart and daily installs fall to a few thousand. That would mean the hard paywall isn't holding users, and the business depends on a novelty spike. ③ Duolingo or Praktika launches a free, funny-character voice chat and runs TikTok ads in your market. Big players have filled the gap.

Comigo - Speak Languages (ios_6786621754) research report

In one line: a US shell company, KPI 22 LLC, built a "speak English with an AI capybara" app and is focusing on Brazil. Most of the volume comes from Android (258k installs worldwide), with iOS as a secondary channel. Growth is driven by a self-run network of "ordinary user" TikTok accounts: several accounts post daily videos saying "I'm learning English with the capybara app 'comigo'", with the top single post reaching 1.2M views. Monetization is a hard-paywall subscription.

  • Timeline: the earliest videos are from 2026-08-07 (@fluentecom.sophiaematt) and 2026-08-09 (@fluentecom.matheus). At that time only the Android version existed (launched 06-25), a month and a half before the iOS launch.
  • Format: real people (or long-term creator partners) talk into their phone with the capybara voice AI; the jokes come from the AI capybara's reactions ("capivara bocuda", the big-mouthed capybara). The name is a plain Portuguese word, "comigo", and the copy repeats "this app is called comigo" so viewers know exactly what to search for. TikTok has already auto-generated two topic pages, "App De Ingles Capivara Nome Do App" and "Capivara Que Ensina A Falar Inglês" (Brave search results), which shows viewers are actually looking for "what's the capybara app called".
  • The same content is reposted to Instagram Reels and YouTube Shorts (search results include things like "O app da capivara usa pra aprender ingles chama 'comigo'").
  • This matches the growth: the densest TikTok posting ran from 10-27 to 11-05, Play installs were about 5k a day, and Brazil's Education Top Free chart climbed from #13 to #4.

3.2 Self-built review site comigoreviews.com (confirmed)

3.3 Official blog SEO (confirmed)

usecomigo.com/en/blog/ hosts Portuguese grammar articles (e.g. "We in Portuguese: Nós, A Gente"), targeting long-tail searches from English speakers learning Portuguese. Volume unverified.

3.4 Paid ads (no evidence found)

Our Meta ad library has no advertiser for Comigo / KPI 22 (the library only tracks a fixed list), and there's nothing in the X corpus either. Not finding it doesn't mean they didn't spend.

3.5 Referrals (confirmed, limited impact)

Play reviews mention "invite 3 friends, get one month free", and some users complain they invited people but never received the reward.

3.6 Store ratings (suspicious, unverified)

Among the 5 Play one-star reviews there are many one- or two-word ones like "legal", "muito bom", "leg", "ahhh"; the histogram [563, 0, 0, 563, 8451] also looks off. It looks like a rating prompt that nudges users toward five stars (likely shown before the paywall), but I can't confirm whether it's fake. iOS Brazil average is 4.09; in recent reviews, 1-star reviews dominate (mostly complaining about the full paywall and slow AI).

4. Why it took off

  1. A naturally funny hook for Brazilian TikTok: "an AI capybara helps you speak English." Brazilians already love capybaras (the capivara is a native animal and an internet meme), and pairing that with "unexpected responses" from AI voice conversation makes short videos easy to get traction with.
  2. A content-factory approach to owned accounts: instead of relying on one-off creator deals, they run 2–5 accounts of "ordinary people learning English" and post 1–2 videos a day in the same format, betting on a hit (one video at 1.2M views can drive a big wave of searches). The cost is mostly labor, with no ad spend.
  3. The name is the search term: "comigo" ("with me") is easy to say, and the videos repeatedly say "o app se chama comigo", which makes the path from search to download as short as possible.
  4. Android-first plus Brazil: Brazil has a high Android share, and the bar for the top 10 on Play's free Education chart isn't high. 5k installs a day was enough to climb to #4.
  5. Hard paywall, real revenue: you have to subscribe to get into the app, and iOS has a lot of bad reviews ("Tem que pagar para testar", "Plano muito caro"). Yet on Play the Brazil Education Top Grossing chart holds steady at #23–30, which means enough of the 250k installers are paying. Revenue comes from subscriptions and acquisition costs very little, so unit economics are likely positive.

5. Differentiation, and whether that's why it took off

  • On features (real-time AI voice conversation, per-word pronunciation feedback, mini-games, flashcards, English alarm, app locking) there's almost nothing new: Praktika, Speak, Duolingo Video Call, and GILANGUAGE each cover part of it.
  • The real difference is in the character and the audience: a cartoon capybara that roasts you, aimed at Brazilian Portuguese speakers, skewing young (many reviews come from students), and going for "funny" rather than "professional". The main effect of this difference is to make the videos spreadable, not to make the product better to use. So differentiation is genuinely why it broke out, but what did the work was distribution, not the product experience.
  • Counter-evidence: Aispeak did nearly the same thing a year earlier ("AI capybara English for Spanish speakers" plus a TikTok account) and it never took off. The difference is that Comigo executes harder: multiple accounts, daily posting, unified copy, and it turned the name into a search term.

6. How many people have seen it

  • Revenue isn't public (no TrustMRR listing, and the founders haven't posted their numbers); 0 posts in the X corpus; no media or industry coverage found.
  • But it has spread widely among ordinary Brazilian TikTok users (millions of views, and TikTok auto-generated topic pages).
  • Copycats have already started: CapyEnglish (capilyngo.com, "100% free") and Capy English (capyenglish.com.br, capybara named Yara). Both are small Brazilian web apps / TWAs that aim to capture the "capybara English app" search term and users put off by the paywall.
  • Verdict: it's been buzzing in small circles. Consumers have noticed; app devs mostly haven't.

7. Takeaways

  • "Cute animal mascot + AI voice chat" can churn out a lot of funny short-video material. Pick an animal that's already a meme locally (Brazil's capivara), and pick a conversational, easy-to-search name.
  • Run your own matrix of "learner" persona accounts, bios reading "Criadora / Embaixador do app"; one template for copy, one hashtag (#inglescomigo), post daily, and bet on a hit.
  • Android first, aiming at emerging-market education charts where the bar is lower; a hard paywall + annual subscription + invite-for-a-free-month turns content-driven impulse downloads straight into money.
  • Build your own review aggregator site for social proof and SEO.

8. Still unclear

  • Actual revenue and conversion rate (we only see Brazil Play education Top Grossing ranks #23–#30); retention under the hard paywall.
  • Whether they paid for TikTok Spark Ads or Meta ads (not tracked in the libraries); whether those accounts are staff, paid creators, or the founder.
  • Who the founding team is (the shell company is in Ohio, USA; the team looks Brazilian, unverified).
  • Whether Play ratings are being gamed or incentivized (the histogram is anomalous).
  • Why iOS is so weak in Brazil: is it the paywall, or iOS launching 3 months late?
