# Let Zundamon guide you: a Korean student's "favorite voice navigation," the first week after one post, and the three months after

**What it is** A Korean navigation app: routes use Kakao's navigation engine, and the voice prompts are swapped for a character, voice actor, or family member you like. A subscription unlocks all voices, and creators who upload voices can earn money.

**Why it blew up** A screen recording of "Zundamon guides you" spread on X within Korea's anime community, and right when a major Korean company had stopped selling celebrity navigation voices 2022 years earlier, no one was doing this.

**C** **How you could follow it** Don't build another navigation app in Korea. Instead, focus only on the voice layer: take "favorite voices" to Taiwan and Southeast Asia, or to higher-frequency system sounds like alarms and stop reminders. Launch with a local character that has fans and licensing that allows commercial use, and spread through fan communities using 15-second screen recordings.

C grade: The idea and the zero-cost acquisition approach are worth learning from, but its growth depended entirely on an external IP and a single wave of spread. Within 110 days of launch, Android had fewer than 3,000 installs, and it barely grew after the first week. Following it in Korea isn't worth it. Chatter in small circles

In Jul 2026 23, a Korean X user who described themselves as a "car fan who loves Vocaloid music" posted: "There's actually this thing, a navigation app with Zundamon guiding you, based on Kakao Maps," with a screen recording. The post got 75.8k views, and within one week it brought nearly all the users for an app that had launched only a week earlier. The app is called Vocari (보카리), and what it does can be said in one sentence: the navigation is the same, but the voice reading it out is swapped for a character you like. Below I explain how it took off, why it stalled afterward, and where this idea could be moved.

### What it is

Bokari was built by a student team from a campus startup club at a university in Daejeon (company: Horizon Co., Ltd., founded in November 2025, 1–10 people). It hit iOS in July 2026... 16, with Android following. On the company page of Korean startup platform NextUnicorn, the founder says one person built the product in three weeks and shipped it on both platforms at once.

It doesn't do navigation itself. Routes, real-time traffic, and rerouting are all handled by Kakao Mobility's navigation engine. The official site says "based on the Kakao navigation engine." The team only builds the top layer: the voice. The sample on the official homepage reads: "300 meters ahead · Vocari intersection · turn left," with even the street names read in the character's voice. The approach stacks two layers: fixed prompts ("turn left," "you have arrived, thank you for your hard work") use real human recordings, while street and place names are synthesized in real time by AI using that voice.

The money structure is also clear:

| Tier | Item |
|---|---|
| Free | Navigation works, no ads; all voices in the store can be previewed for free; you can register up to 3 voices for personal use only |
| Voice Lab (subscription) | You can register up to 10 of your own voices, of which 3 can read street names |
| All-in-One (subscription, the main offer) | Use any voice in the store, and new premium voices are included |
| Buy a single voice | Creators set their own price, from 1,100 to 490,000 KRW, in 54 tiers |

Creators (voice actors, streamers, or ordinary people who just want their family's voice in the navigation) record a sample sentence on the web, and AI can fill in the remaining prompts. For voices sold on the store, creators get a cut of each sale; for subscribers, a payout pool is split by how much each voice gets played. (Official site, 11-06)

### Why Zundamon specifically

Zundamon is a character in VOICEVOX, a free Japanese speech synthesis software, whose verbal tic is adding "のだ" at the end of sentences. It's a ready-made meme in both Japanese and Korean anime communities. On Korean TikTok, "Zundamon teacher"-type videos can reach over a million views, and DCinside has a dedicated gallery for it. But in Korea, no everyday product used its voice.

So the unit of spread in that post was an image that needed no explanation: while driving, Zundamon tells you in that tone to turn left ahead. Interestingly, the poster replied that same day: "Huh, this video has no sound, I just noticed." The most viral recording was muted. The captions and visuals alone were enough to make people click. The first question in the comments was about copyright: "The creator seems to say they got permission, not sure."

The numbers line up. Google Play installs as of Jul 27 were already 1,783 (a third-party estimate, the first observation point); Jul 31 2,322. The founder self-reported "0 marketing spend, 7 days after launch, 3,800 people registered organically, and people started paying right away" (unverified). I found no paid ads, creator partnerships, or media coverage. The official Instagram has only about 320 followers, and each video gets 1 to 6 likes.

### The copyright storm became a second round of publicity

In Jul 26, a one-star App Store review appeared: "Zundamon's voice disappeared, what happened?" The voice had been temporarily removed. The next day, the official Instagram posted "New voices are out, and Zundamon is back!!!" saying the voice licensing was resolved and the character image rights were being negotiated separately. Later, "Zundamon Korean (즌다몬 한국어)" (a Korean-language Zundamon) appeared in the store.

This episode is worth remembering: all of its growth hung on an IP it didn't own, and the licensing of that IP ran into trouble on day ten after launch.

### Took off, then stalled

After the first week, the curve was nearly flat. Google Play installs grew only single digits per week from mid-August to late October, and by Oct 26 2,592, Nov 4 2,948 — 110 days after launch, under 3,000. Through Nov 6, iOS had only 4 ratings in total (all 5 stars), with 7 new ones in the last 1 days.

There was a small peak in late October: Oct 30 it hit #11 on Korea's iOS free navigation chart, and Android gained +356 that week. Around the same time it added two map themes, "GTA5 map with Zundamon guiding you" and "cyberpunk map," plus a version update, but the official videos had very low engagement, and I didn't find the real source of the peak. On Nov 6, the App Store page had it at #89 on the navigation free chart.

It ranked #29 on Korea's iOS navigation grossing chart on Oct 18 and #4 on Nov 19, which looks good, but take it with a grain of salt: the top 30 on that chart the same day included several apps with only 0 ratings (at #6, #16, and #18), and in this category a few subscriptions a day can get you into the top 20. A grossing rank only shows that people are paying, not how much. Revenue has never been disclosed.

What people who stuck around asked for in the comments: "Hoping for CarPlay support" (7-28), "Record your family's voices first! Hope professional voice actors and Vocaloid can be added too" (8-24), "The ads are done, it's bound to work, invite friends for points or something... nah, forget the ads, I'll just use it quietly myself" (11-01). Separately, Korean Android Auto mostly only supports a few navigation apps like Kakao and TMAP. The Korean namu.wiki entry on "Android Auto" lists Vocari as one of the Kakao-based navigation apps usable in the car, a small but real long-tail entry point.

### Who else is doing the same thing

"Paying to swap your navigation voice" isn't new in Korea. Big players tried it and quit.

| Who | Where | How it differs from Vocari |
|---|---|---|
| TMAP celebrity voices | Korea's #1 navigation app | Sold celebrity voices from 2013, added AI-synthesized celebrity voices in 2021; announced in November 2022 it would stop selling. Only big names left, platform-priced. |
| Kakao Navi voices | Korea's #2 navigation app | Free, a dozen-plus official voices (dialects, celebrities, cartoons). No sales, no user uploads. |
| Yahoo! Car Navi "Oshi Dora" | Japan | Nearly the same idea, big-company edition. ¥550/month. The hololive AZKi version got extended in August 2026 for another year, with 50+ new lines. Official licensed IP only. |
| MAPLUS キャラdeナビ | Japan | Voice-actor voices plus a map reskin. An old, niche paid navigation app, Japan only. |
| Waze custom voices | Global | You can record your own voice, but can't buy or sell voices and it doesn't read street names. Almost nobody in Korea uses Waze. |
| VOICEVOX swap to Google Maps voice tutorial | Japanese tech tinkerers | You have to tinker yourself, Android only |
| Game Maps IRL / GoGirl | iOS, same Turkish developer | Sells "game-style map skins" and charted #16–21 on Korea's navigation Top Grossing. Vocari's October GTA5 map is on this path. |

Takeaway: Korea's big players exited at the end of 2022, leaving a gap. Vocari filled it, swapping the voices from "celebrities" to "anime characters, creators, family." Japan's Yahoo has already shown people will pay monthly to hear their oshi give directions. In Korea, no second app like it has followed yet.

### The hard problems with this business

- **Growth depends on one external IP and one viral moment.** What actually brought users in was the ZUNDAMON voice, not a creator market. The official site's voice section still says "COMING SOON, more voices in preparation," and the featured ones are still ZUNDAMON and another character, Kurosawa Rei. The two-sided market hasn't started turning yet.

- **Navigation is a low-frequency decision.** Switching voices is fun once, but people don't browse navigation stores every week. Without new voices or new memes, there's no new screen recording to share.

- **Licensing can blow up at any time.** It was already pulled once on day ten after launch.

- **Too small.** Under 110 days, under 3,000 Android installs. This is a signal that "people want this direction," not that "the business has been proven to scale."

### If it were you

**Verdict:** C. It's a clever idea and a good playbook to study, but copying it in Korea isn't worth it. It's stuck at 3,000 installs on its own. What's worth taking is the method, not this market.

**Good fit for:** people already in some anime or idol fandom who can get (or are) a set of character voices; small teams of 1–2 who know a map SDK; people who want to test in places like Taiwan or Southeast Asia, where there are fans but no local "oshi navigation" product.

**Bad fit for:** people who want to build a navigation tool itself (routing will never beat Kakao or Google); people with no voice rights who expect users to upload enough to carry the store; people who need stable cash flow.

**How to build it:** Don't build navigation, build the "voice layer" only. Hand routing to existing engines (Kakao, Google, Mapbox), build a hybrid of recording plus AI for street names, and a voice store. Doable in three weeks. The better bet is to apply the same logic to other "system sounds you hear all day": alarms, timers, arrival alerts, workout counters. Used more often than navigation, and you don't have to deal with map giants. For launch voices, pick a character with local fans and no local product. Prefer ones with public licensing terms that allow commercial use (ZUNDAMON is exactly this type), and write the licensing down before launch.

**How to get users:** Follow Vocari's playbook. The unit of spread is a 15-second screen recording: the character reads out something ordinary using their catchphrase. Post it in that character's fan communities (X, the relevant forums or boards, TikTok). No paid acquisition. Every new voice you add is a reason for a new recording. No new voices, no second wave.

**When to move:** No hard deadline. But once a big-company version like Yahoo's "Oshi Dora" goes global, or Kakao reopens paid voices itself, the gap closes. If you want to take this to other countries, the sooner the better.

**What would mean I got this wrong:** ① Vocari's Android installs passing 2027k before early 10, or dozens of voices with paying buyers appearing in the creator store. That would mean the marketplace model is working, and the grade should go up. ② The reverse: if the ZUNDAMON voice gets pulled again, or installs are still under 3 after 3,500 months, this was a one-off meme, and even "moving it elsewhere" becomes questionable. ③ A second app of the same type appears in Korea or Taiwan and takes off. That would mean demand is bigger than estimated here.

## Vocari (보카리)! Navigation with your oshi as your guide: why it worked

> App Store id6787447137 / Google Play com.vocari.app · Developer Horizon Co., Ltd. (주식회사 호라이즌, Daejeon) · iOS listed 2026-07-16 · Research date 2026-11-06

### One line

A Korean student team (self-described solo developer) built an "oshi (최애) voice navigation" app: routing uses the Kakao Mobility engine, and the voice is replaced with a voice actor, virtual singer, VTuber, or your own family member. Free to use, no ads. Revenue comes from an "all voices" subscription (올인원) and one-time purchases of individual voices. Creators upload voices and get a revenue share based on play counts. It took off **not through paid acquisition, but through one X post that spread the image of "ZUNDAMON (즌다몬) giving you directions" into Korea's Vocaloid and subculture communities** . Since then it has stayed small and barely grown. Its charting position is mostly because the cost to get onto Korea's paid navigation chart is extremely low.

### 1. Data: how big is it

| Metric | Value | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Google Play cumulative installs | 2,948(2026-11-04); on the store ~110 days | googleplay library app_profile / app_day |
| Android install curve | 07-27 already 1,783 (first observation, ~958/day avg) → 07-31 2,322 → mid-to-late August single digits per week → 10-26 2,592 → 11-02 2,948 | googleplay library app_day_ext (AppstoreSpy estimate) + app_day |
| iOS ratings | 4 (KR), last 7 days +1 | App Store library / data card |
| iOS Korea navigation charts | Top Grossing 10-29 #18, 11-04 #19, 11-06 #47; Top Free 10-30 #11, 10-31 #27, then 70–100 after | appstore database chart_rank (genre 6010) |
| Play Korea navigation Top Free | 10-30 #178 → 10-31 #77 → 11-04 #198 | googleplay library chart_rank |
| Founder's own account | 「营销费 0 元,上线 7 天自然注册 3,800 人,立即产生 B2C 付费」;「3 周单人做完并双端上架」 | NextUnicorn company page [www.nextunicorn.kr/company/d806944e3ae8fff8](https://www.nextunicorn.kr/company/d806944e3ae8fff8) |

**Don't take the Top Grossing chart at face value** : 11-04 Several apps in South Korea's iOS Navigation Top Grossing top 30 have only 0–4 ratings (Land Lens ranks #6 on 0 ratings, GoGirl #16 on 0 ratings, iAnyGo #18 on 0 ratings), which means the bar for charting in this category is low enough to land in the top 20 with a few sales a day. 보카리 sitting at #18–19 means someone is paying, not that the money is big (appstore library 2026-11-04 chart).

### 2. Competitors: who else does the same thing

| Competitors | Where | Launched | Scale | How it differs from Vocari |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| TMAP 셀럽보이스 / 스타 음성안내 | Big-tech feature (Korea's #1 navigation) | Starting 2013, "Star Voice"; 2021-03 AI-synthesized celebs (Pengsu, Ahn Young-mi, Choi Jun) | Korea's largest navigation app; but **2022-11-16 announced the sale is ending, 2022-12 Han Moon-cheol's voice was the last one** , so old users can only use it until their subscriptions expire | TMAP only sold big celebrities at platform pricing; it has exited this business, leaving a gap (clien 2023-03 post, Yonhap News 2021-03) |
| 카카오내비 길안내 음성 | Big-company features | 2016 had 18 voices at launch (dialects, celebrities, Pororo, VJ Special Forces, Cha Seung-won, etc.) | Korea's #2 navigation app | Free, a fixed set of official voices; no selling, no creator uploads, no anime/VTuber voices |
| Yahoo! Car Navi "Oshi Dora" | Big-tech feature (Japan, LY Corp) | Launched around 2025, ¥550/month; hololive AZKi edition 2026-08 extended by 1 years with 50+ new voice lines | Japan's leading free navigation app | **Basically a Japanese big-tech version of nearly the same idea** , but only with officially contracted IP and no user uploads; not usable in Korea |
| MAPLUS キャラdeナビ | Japan iOS/Android | Long-running legacy app | Japan's niche paid navigation app | Voice actor voices + map skin reskins, the closest match to Bokari; Japan only |
| Waze custom voices | Big-tech feature (Google) | From ¥2016 | Global | You can record your own or family members' voices and share them, but no trading and no reading street names; Waze in Korea is almost unused |
| Community DIY: VOICEVOX Zundamon as TTS for Google Maps / Organic Maps | Open source / tutorials | Starting 2021 (X, YouTube, Qiita) | Japanese tech tinkerers | Requires tinkering, Android only; Bokari is a finished product you can install and use right away |
| Game Maps IRL, GoGirl (same Turkish developer, Retry Apps) | iOS | 2025-03 / 2026-09 | KR ratings 77 / 0; both in the KR navigation Top Grossing at #21 / #16 | Sells "map skins" (game-map styling) rather than voices; Bokari's late-October GTA5 / cyberpunk map themes are the same approach |

Takeaway: **"paying to swap navigation voices" was once done by a big Korean player and died (TMAP ended sales in 2022); in Japan Yahoo turned it into a legit business** . Bokari's position: "no one in Korea does it anymore + swap the voice source from celebrities to subculture characters + open creator listings."

### 3. Where users came from (growth tactics)

1. **X self-hosted post (confirmed, the main one)** : 2026-07-23 user @Capra_hircus__ (bio reads 「차쟁이…보카로 음악…」) posted 「아니 이런 게 있네 즌다몬이 길 안내해 주는 내비임 카카오맵 기반이고」 with a screen recording, **75.8K views, 356 reposts, 1K likes, 477 bookmarks** (https://x.com/Capra_hircus__/status/2080124812798951868). The timing lines up with the 1,783 Android installs in the first week and the founder's "7 days, 3,800 signups" claim. The replies already include people discussing the ずんだもん licensing question.

2. **Voice-license controversy → turned into a comeback PR (confirmed)** : 7-26 iOS one-star review: "즌다몬 보이스가 사라졌는데 뭔가요" ("The Zundamon voice is gone, what happened?"), 7-27 the official Instagram posted "신규음성 공개 및, 즌다몬 복귀!!!" ("New voice released, Zundamon is back!!!"), explaining that the ずんだもん voice license and character license were negotiated separately (Instagram @vocari.kr reels DbTHCiizVy5 / DbVrvcoTmc8). It then charted with "즌다몬 한국어" (Voiceger: Zundamon).

3. **Community-driven listing (confirmed)** : the namu.wiki "Android Auto" entry lists Bokari as a navigation app based on KakaoMap that works on Android Auto. Korean Android Auto only defaults to a few navigation apps like Kakao/TMAP, so this is a practical long-tail entry point; arca.live car channel post "Short review of using Otakku Navi" (2026-07-26,433 views).

4. **Official Instagram (confirmed, but almost no effect)** : @vocari.kr has only 320 followers, each reel gets 1–6 likes; 10-26 "GTA5 map with Zundamon giving directions" and "cyberpunk map" are two map-theme reels. The YouTube channel has 1 subscribers.

5. **Small late-October spike (cause unverified)** : 10-30 iOS navigation Top Free climbed to #11, Android +356 in one week. It coincided with the map-theme launch and 1.0.32 update, but official reel engagement was too low to be the cause; it's probably another round of X/community reposts or store search, though no evidence was found.

6. **Not found** : paid ads, creator partnerships, press coverage (only a company profile on NextUnicorn, and one related article from 2026-01 CEO저널), or any 보카리 videos on TikTok (a TikHub search for 보카리 only returns Stray Kids' Felix and his "Bbokari").

### 4. Why it took off

- **A screenshot/recording-friendly visual** : "Zundamon giving you directions with his catchphrase, '300m ahead turn left, nanodayo'" is already a meme, and a 15-second recording spreads itself on X. The product's unit of spread is the "voice," which naturally suits short videos and posts.

- **Korea already has an existing Zundamon / Vocaloid scene** : Korean "Zundamon training" videos on TikTok routinely get hundreds of thousands to millions of views (e.g., one from @tldn1o with 1.2M views), and DCinside has a Zundamon minor gallery. The character has fans in Korea, but no local practical product uses it.

- **A gap** : TMAP ended sales of celebrity voices at the end of 2022; Kakao Navi only has a few official free voices. Korea has no navigation app where you can pay to swap in your "oshi"'s voice anymore.

- **Lowered technical barrier via Kakao's engine and TTS** : routing, transit and rerouting are all handled by the Kakao Mobility engine; the team only builds the "voice layer" (a hybrid of fixed recordings + AI-synthesized street names). The founder says it was built solo in 3 weeks.

- **Clear paywall** : free to use, no ads; to get "all voices + street names read in character voices," you subscribe to the all-in-one plan. Individual voice creators set their own prices (₩1,100–490,000, 54 tiers, from recalled material). Korea's navigation Top Grossing bar is extremely low, so a few subscriptions can put it near the #20 spot.

### 5. Differentiation: is that why it took off?

- Versus big players (TMAP/Kakao): **the voice source shifts from "celebrities" to "subculture characters / virtual singers / creators / family," with open uploads and revenue sharing by plays** . Versus Yahoo Oshi Dora: the same idea, but in Korea, and a UGC marketplace rather than officially contracted voices.

- **What actually brought users is the single "Zundamon" voice** , not the creator marketplace. The marketplace model isn't showing results yet: the website says "COMING SOON — we're preparing more voices," and it still promotes Kurosawa Rei and Zundamon; few voices are listed in the store.

- "Kakao engine + works on Android Auto" is one reason for retention (reviews ask for CarPlay), but not a reason for acquisition.

- So: differentiation = the "oshi voice" positioning is genuinely why it took off; but the growth depends entirely on one external IP (with licensing risk), and after the first week growth has essentially stalled (Android adds only single digits per week from mid-August to late October).

### 6. How many people have seen it

- Revenue not public (no TrustMRR; the founder only wrote "immediately generating paid users" on NextUnicorn).

- No media coverage, and no major X accounts have written about it; the only spread is one personal post from July with 75.8K views, which can't be found in the x-radar corpus.

- Copycats: no new similar Korean apps found in the library (2026-10's "Bring - Voice Navigation" is voice search for destinations, not a similar product). Japan has Yahoo Oshi Dora and MAPLUS launched first, so it's not copying it.

- Verdict: **it's being talked about in small circles** (the Korean Vocaloid/Zundamon community and car-enthusiast communities).

### 7. What to borrow

- **Turn high-frequency, passively heard system sounds into fan merchandise** : navigation, alarms, timers, bus announcements... you hear them every day, and swapping in your oshi's voice creates willingness to pay; the unit of spread is a screen recording.

- **Borrow a big platform's engine and build only the last layer** : routing goes to the Kakao SDK, while you build only the voice layer + store + revenue share, which allows a launch in 3 weeks.

- **Transplant a proven oshi model across borders** : Japan's Yahoo Oshi Dora already showed people will pay ¥550/month to hear an oshi navigate; Korea, Taiwan and Southeast Asia have no equivalent product yet. In reverse, selling Korean celebrity/VTuber voices to Japanese fans follows the same logic.

- **Find a foreign IP that has local fans but no local product** (here, Zundamon) as the launch voice, and use its meme-ability to go viral on X.

### 8. Uncertain

- Whether the ずんだもん voice/character licensing is fully settled (official side says voice licensing is resolved, character licensing is still in talks).

- The real source of the small wave at the end of October.

- Whether there's an official partnership with Kakao Mobility (the site says "based on the Kakao Mobility navigation engine"; no partnership announcement found).

- iOS has only 4 ratings, Android nearly 3,000 installs, so iOS actual user count is hard to estimate.
