Cicade: Chat & Make Friends · HIEN VINH TRADING PRODUCTION COMPANY LIMITED

A 'fashion community' lands on the US social grossing chart: Cicade actually sells gold-coin private chats, and the person chatting with you may be a fake account

What it is A stranger-chat app wearing a "fashion community" shell. It charges per coin for 1v1 paid chats, and it's one of several decoy apps the same team uploaded in bulk under multiple Vietnamese shell companies.

Why it blew up Social grossing charts are easy to crack in the US and Middle East; gold packs go up to $99.99, so a few dozen willing spenders can push it into the top 100. Its terms allow fake profiles to initiate contact to drive first payments, and the ratings look manufactured.

DHow you could follow Don't copy it. Only borrow two points to build a legitimate version: high-ticket, human-advisor-style 1v1 services (fashion, skincare, study-abroad consulting), one backend with several vertical front ends, and start in low-barrier grossing charts in the Middle East and Latin America for exposure.

D grade: it makes money through fake data accounts, borrowed accounts, and reskins that slip past review, which a legitimate follower can't replicate. Legitimate 1v1 paid chat is already held by Wizz, Azar, and Gaze, and at least a dozen clones from the same batch exist. Estimated monthly revenue per single app is under $5 000. Almost nobody knows about it yet

Cicade is an App Store app billing itself as an outfit community, where people post daily looks and swap styling tips. In Nov 5 it hit #85 on the US Social Networking Top Grossing chart, with only 60 ratings in the US. Its terms of service are blunt: some of the people you chat with are "nominal users" run by the operator, who message you first and send virtual gifts, and several apps share one user pool. It's not one product. It's one of a set of reskinned shells, and each one earns modestly.

Clause 5: "You accept that some people you chat with are fake profiles"

Open cicadeclub.com and the homepage is a full page of outfit copy: "Share Your Daily Looks", "Get Outfit Advice". The terms page is much longer and has little to do with outfits. The opening paragraph says Cicade members belong to a larger online community that includes the company's and affiliates' other services, and "paying users of one service can chat with paying and non-paying users of all services."

Clauses 3 through 6 cover nominal users: to "help users understand how to communicate and buy subscriptions," the operator created these profiles. "You agree and accept that some of the profiles you chat with may be nominal users," who "can initiate conversations, wink, view your profile, and send virtual gifts." The terms also keep dating-app vocabulary like "matching system" and "subscription." The same sentences show up in other dating apps' terms, which suggests a template passed around this business.

The store listing matches: 10 tier, "Cicade coins pack", from $0.99 to $99.99; rated 16+, with "unrestricted web access" and "messaging and chat" listed; package size 14.2 MB. I didn't install it to check whether the video chat is native or a web wrapper, so that's unverified.

What it is and how it charges

In one line: 1v1 paid text and video chat with strangers, metered in coins, wrapped in an "outfit community" skin to pass review.

How this category collects money is open industry practice: text is charged per message in coins, video per minute. In similar cases in China that have been busted, text cost 10 to 100 coins per message and video cost 100 to 2 000 coins per minute, 1 yuan bought 100 coins, and the chat hosts and the company split the take roughly 40/60 (Juejin, 2025-12). New users are approached right away by "people" who message first and send gifts, and that's how first top-ups happen.

The developer account is HIEN VINH TRADING PRODUCTION COMPANY LIMITED, a Vietnamese trading company whose only listed app is this one. It went live in Jul 22, had one update in Aug 7, and the version number hasn't changed since.

Why it charts: low bar, and each user pays a lot

The chart bar is low. It sat near #90 on the US Social Networking Top Grossing chart, with third-party estimates of under $5 000 a month (AppGazers). Smaller storefronts are lower still: Cicade had 0 ratings in Guatemala and still reached #29 on its social Top Grossing chart, and its best in Egypt was #36 with just one or two ratings (App Store charts, 10-28 to 11-06).

One person can pay a lot. The top coin pack is $99.99. A few dozen people willing to top up is enough to push a new app to around #100 on a grossing chart.

The ratings are manufactured. In the US it has 64 ratings averaging 4.97, and only 3 written reviews: "Wholesome app", "Fun fun", "Rica". The first is from a reviewer named "honest person writing reviews" (App Store reviews, 11-06). Daily chart snapshots show US ratings went from 10-28 to 41 and the other count from 11-06 to 60 (the store page shows slightly higher numbers), adding one or two a day.

Its US rank has been climbing: 10-28 #127, 10-31 #95, 11-05 #85, then 11-06 back to #98. Downloads are small, and on the Top Free chart it hovers around #122 to #171.

It's not one app. It's a row of them.

Put the developer names, the in-app purchase naming, and the website terms side by side and a table forms. All of these went live between May and October 2026, each developer account holds one app, and the company names have nothing to do with the software:

The themes differ on purpose, to get around Apple's "repetitive app" (4.3) and "hidden functionality" (2.3.1) review rules. One account, one package, so if one gets pulled the others aren't dragged down. In the store's "You might also like" section these packages show up next to each other and next to plenty of random video-chat apps.

Cicade isn't the biggest in this row. Counting the countries where each has charted, Withe has 82, Parvis 80, Graff 59, and Cicade only 16. Its strength is the US, where it has the most ratings and the steadiest rank.

Who's behind it? The account is held by a Vietnamese company, but the privacy policy pages for Cicade, Moody and Candy are all Simplified Chinese Word files exported from WPS, with the author field reading the same name, "HUANGCHENG" (page source, 11-06). The likely read is one Chinese team listing through a Vietnamese shell.

Where users come from

  • Store search: the name packs in "Chat & Make Friends" and the subtitle is "Community & Chat Real People", targeting words like "dating" and "real people chat". Inferred; I haven't verified whether Apple Search Ads are being bought.
  • Packages funneling into each other: the terms say users are shared across services, so if one package is removed, users and chat hosts can be moved to the next.
  • Off-store: none found. TikTok, X and Reddit searches turn up nothing relevant, and there's no press coverage. Only store mirrors and auto-generated data-site pages come up. Its profile doesn't match anything in the Meta Ad Library, but not finding it there doesn't mean it isn't advertising.

Few people know about it. But its revenue isn't high either, and this path never relied on being little-known to make money.

Who it's competing with

The big players doing openly paid 1v1 video chat are charting, and well ahead of it: Wizz (300k ratings in the US, #8 social grossing), Gaze (20k ratings, #19), Azar (100k ratings, #31), MICO (#55), Fachat (#60), HIYAK (#72). They have brands, long-running ad spend, real hosts and real users. Beyond the table above, Cicade has a dozen or so siblings from the same batch: Soluna, MeetCalls, Dount, Sorb, Migu and others.

So Cicade is weak on both fronts. It can't compete on brand against the majors, and as a shell it's just one of many.

If it were you

The verdict: don't follow it. Its revenue comes from fake-profile lures that push top-ups, borrowed accounts, and reskins that get past review. Legitimate builders can't use that, and doing it is fraud, not just a risk of removal. A single package earns only a few thousand dollars a month. What's worth noting is two things: how low the social grossing bar is in the US and Middle East, and how one backend can power several interest-themed front ends.

Who it fits: people building real-person, high-ticket, real-time 1v1 services, such as paid consulting, language practice or outfit advice. It's a useful benchmark: a few dozen paying users can get you onto a social or lifestyle grossing chart for exposure.

Who it doesn't fit: anyone trying to copy it as a "paid stranger chat in coins" product. The legitimate version has to compete with Wizz, Azar and Gaze on ad spend and host supply. Copying the playbook in those terms means reproducing a business people have already been arrested for.

How to do it (the legitimate version only):

  1. Pick a niche where people actually pay for help, such as outfits, skincare, study abroad or fitness. Hire real advisors, charge per session or per minute, and use in-app purchases for coin-style tiers.
  2. Use one backend with several niche front ends, each with its own name and keywords. This part is worth borrowing, as long as each front end really does its job and you don't rely on hidden functionality to pass review.
  3. Start in countries with low chart bars: in social and lifestyle grossing charts in Middle East and Latin American storefronts, a few purchases can get you into the top 100.

How to get users: start with store search terms and small-storefront charts for first exposure. Real advisors can make their own content to drive traffic, which is exactly what the shell packages can't do.

Is there a window? No window to race. The shell pattern kept launching new packages every month from May to October, which shows it's still passing review, but if Apple tightens any one rule, the whole row can come down together.

Signs this read is wrong: ① this row of shells keeps going for several months, adding apps and climbing charts, which would mean the money is bigger than estimated and the legitimate version is worth modeling again. ② Cicade's ratings start picking up long reviews from real users about outfits and the chat experience, suggesting it's genuinely building a community, and this verdict should change.

Cicade: Chat & Make Friends (iOS 6787881862), and why it charts

Research date 2026-11-06. Data: our appstore library (daily since 2026-10-28), Apple lookup / store page / review RSS, Cicade and peer apps' website terms pages (read via r.jina.ai), Jina search, TikHub, x-radar, metaads library.

Bottom line

This isn't a fashion community. It's one of several "1v1 paid chat / video chat knockoff apps" pushed out under multiple Vietnamese shell-company developer accounts by one operator or group. The storefront says "outfit community" to get through review, but the real business is coin-based private chats and video calls. The terms of service spell out that "nominal users" (fake profiles run by the operator) will initiate conversations and send virtual gifts, and several apps share one user pool. It reached #85–#141 on the US Social Top Grossing chart because that chart has a low bar, and products like 1v1 paid chat have high ARPU: few users, but each one pays a lot. It's not winning on product differentiation. It's small (third-party estimate: US monthly revenue < $5K) and not a real breakout, just one number in a matrix.

2. What it actually is: matrix evidence

2.1 terms explicitly state "fake users" and a "shared user pool"

Original text from cicadeclub.com/termsofservice.html:

  • "Members of Cicade … may be a part of the online community that includes other services owned by the Company or its affiliates … profiles on the Service may be viewable on other such Services and paying subscribers of one Service may be able to communicate with other paying and non-paying subscribers on all Services." In other words, multiple apps share one user pool.
  • "some of the existing profiles that you communicate with can be nominal users … Messages that are sent from nominal users are aimed at communication modeling … These profiles can initiate communication and send winks, view your profile and send virtual gifts." In other words, operator-controlled profiles message first and send gifts.
  • The terms also keep phrases like "compatibility matching system" and "subscription" from dating-site templates, which don't match the "fashion community" storefront. The same sentences appear in the terms of the dating app "Just She" (justshe.me/terms.html), a common template in the dating industry.

Evidence: the developer names are seafood, construction, real estate and labor companies from Vietnam, nothing to do with software (typical borrowed-shell accounts); each site is a single page with an outlook email; in-app purchases use the same 10-tier price ladder; Cicade, Moody and Candy share naming and terms word for word; in the store's "You Might Also Like" and FoxData's similar-app lists they show up next to each other, alongside video chat apps like Neon, Dash, Roya, Tabor, MeetCalls and Migu. Each one has a different cover theme (fashion, skincare, motorcycles, venues, parties) to dodge Apple's 4.3 (duplicate app) and 2.3.1 (hidden features) review rules.

Cicade isn't the strongest in the matrix. By the number of stores where it has charted (appstore library), Withe has 82, Parvis 80, Graff 59, Candy 50, Moody 46, Karp 42, and Cicade only 16. Its trait is the most US ratings (60, vs Flock 49, Moody 42), and its US social grossing rank is the steadiest.

3. Competitors

Doing the same thing (paid chat with strangers, billed in coins, 1v1 text / video):

  • Established compliant players: Azar (Hyperconnect, 2015, about 102k US ratings, social grossing #31), Wizz (300k ratings, #8), Gaze (VLMedia, 20.7k ratings, #19), MICO (#55), HIYAK (#72), Fachat (2019,1,923 ratings, #60), Chatty: One to One (2025, #81). They use real names, run long-term campaigns, and have real hosts and real users.
  • Same-period shell apps: the sibling packs in the table above, plus Soluna, MeetCalls, Dount (1,003 ratings), Lucky1, Sorb (a Jiuquan, Gansu company), Migu and others, all appear in Cicade's "You Might Also Like".
  • Big-tech features: no big company runs paid stranger video chat directly; Tinder and Bumble have video calls, but they don't bill per minute in coins.
  • The difference between Cicade and the compliant players: no brand, no long-term campaigns; it relies on one-off shell packs, borrowed-shell accounts and rotating themes to pass review, and its terms allow fake profile accounts to start conversations to drive first purchases. It's nearly indistinguishable from the sibling packs, just with a "fashion" skin on top.

4. Where users come from

  • TikTok / X / Reddit / media: none found. Searching "cicade app" on TikHub returns no relevant videos; x-radar has 90 days and 0 posts; what you can find online is store mirrors and data-site pages (Similarweb, Apptopia, AppGazers, m-s-y.com, Storelift).
  • Meta ads: the metaads library shows no Page or App links for Cicade or its sibling packs. Our library only tracks keyword-discovered tool Pages, so not finding them doesn't mean they weren't running ads.
  • Inferred sources (unverified):
    1. Store search / ASA: the name stuffs in "Chat & Make Friends", the subtitle is "Community & Chat Real People", targeting search terms like "chat", "make friends" and "real people"; roughly 2 new ratings a day, corresponding to small download volume.
    2. Cross-pack traffic within the matrix: the terms explicitly say users can move between Services, so when one pack is taken down, users and hosts can migrate to a new one.
    3. Prompted reviews: 64 ratings, 5.0 stars, only 3 generic written reviews, one by an author named "honest person writing reviews", which looks like a review-prompt popup or fake reviews.
    4. Middle East storefronts have a low bar: in Egypt, Jordan, Lebanon and Qatar, social apps in the Top Grossing chart at #50–180 need only a trickle of top-ups to get on, and storefronts with just 0 ratings still make the chart. 1v1 video social going global has long treated the Middle East as a high-ARPU market (per industry coverage from Agora, Ebigbo and others).

5. Why it could "run" at all

  1. The monetization model itself has high ARPU: the top coin pack is $99.99; the industry norm is to deduct coins per text message and per video minute (a comparable domestic fraud case: text 10–100 coins per message, video 100–2000 coins per minute, 1 yuan = 100 coins, with hosts and the company taking a 4:6 split; Juejin article "1V1 social precision harvesting 360M!40 shell packs", 2025-12). A few dozen paying users can push a new pack near social grossing #100.
  2. Fake profile accounts drive first purchases: the terms allow "nominal users" to initiate conversations and send gifts, so new users immediately have "people" to talk to, which is key to first-purchase conversion.
  3. Low bar for social grossing: US social grossing around #90 is estimated at under $5K in monthly revenue (AppGazers); the Middle East storefronts are lower still.
  4. The shell matrix spreads risk: each borrowed-shell account runs one pack with a different theme, so if Apple flags one, the others aren't implicated; new packs have kept launching from 2026-05 through October.

6. Differentiation

The product has no real differentiation. The only "difference" is the cover theme (fashion) and the description copy, which serve to pass review, not to attract users. It charts because of the model plus distribution (the shell matrix, the terms that allow fake users, low-bar charts), and has nothing to do with its fashion-community positioning.

7. Visibility and copycats

  • Visibility: few people know about it. No media, X or TikTok discussion, only auto-generated pages on third-party data sites; revenue isn't public.
  • Copycats: it's itself one of many templated matrix apps; same-niche siblings in fashion include Lovit and Candy; at least 10 new 2026 apps with the same model (see section 2.2).

8. What others can borrow (only the legitimate parts)

  • Social / dating categories in the US and Middle East have a very low bar for category grossing charts; high-ARPU 1v1 real-time interaction (live companionship, voice, skill consultation) can chart and get exposure with only a few paying users.
  • "One model, many theme entry points": the same backend and user pool, with multiple vertical-interest front ends (fashion, skincare, motorcycles), each picking up its own search terms. A legitimate version can be a real vertical community plus paid consultation.
  • What not to borrow: fake profile accounts luring top-ups, borrowed-shell accounts, hidden features to pass review. These violate Apple's 2.3.1 / 4.3 / 5.6 and carry fraud risk (the similar gangs in the Juejin piece have already been busted by police). Karp's UK reviews already include "Scam", and packs like this usually have short lifespans.

9. Uncertain

  • I didn't install the app, so I can't verify whether it really has video calls or is a WebView wrapper (14.2 MB and Unrestricted Web Access are only circumstantial).
  • Who operates it (a local Vietnamese team or a Chinese team using a Vietnamese shell) is uncertain; Sorb's developer is a Jiuquan, Gansu company, showing both Chinese and Vietnamese players in this ecosystem.
  • Whether it ran Meta / TikTok / ASA: our ad library shows nothing, which doesn't rule it out.
  • Neon, Dash, Roya and Tabor don't show up in the Saudi / UK lookups; they may have been delisted; unverified.
  • Actual revenue: only AppGazers' < $5K estimate.
