A welding toolbox built by a UK steel-fabrication shop owner, lifted by a US sheet-metal influencer: the business of Fabora and "blue-collar trade apps"
What it is A phone toolbox for welders, sheet-metal workers and steel fabrication shops: offline steel-weight, welding-parameter, cut-list and stair-stringer layout calculators; the paid tier adds quoting, invoicing, drawing output and photo-to-parts-list reading.
Why it took off Starting late September, a US sheet-metal tradesman with several hundred thousand followers posted a run of recommendation videos (470k views on one Facebook post), plus Meta and TikTok paid acquisition. "Made by a working tradesman" made welding crowds willing to trust it.
BHow you could follow it Pick another trade (electricians, HVAC, plumbing, carpentry) and build the same full toolbox. Keep basics free, put the money-making features (quoting, drawing output, photo reading) behind the paywall, sell a one-time-purchase tier, and use tradesman accounts with 100k to 500k followers for voiceover-driven volume.

Fabora: Steel & Metal Tools is a phone toolbox written by the owner of a UK steel-fabrication shop: 33 calculation and layout tools that welders, sheet-metal workers and steel fabricators need. It works offline. The shop-owner tools (quotes, invoices, drawing output) sit behind a subscription. It only went live at the end of July; iOS is small, but Android has passed ten thousand downloads. It got noticed because a US sheet-metal tradesman with several hundred thousand followers filmed a few voiceover videos about it. This piece covers what it is, where the traffic came from, whether it makes money, what it does badly, and whether the same playbook is worth running in another trade.
Oct 31, a photo of a parts list
On Oct 31, 2026, US sheet-metal tradesman Adam Fleisch posted a TikTok on his account Sheet Metal Samurai titled "I took a PHOTO of my parts list and it built my cut list." The caption sets up a scene every fabrication shop knows: "Last job I over-ordered material because I didn't list it properly, and the shop floor was full of leftover steel. This time I wrote the list, took a photo, and Fabora read it. It told me how many of each piece to buy, the cheapest way to cut each one, and spat out a PDF for the floor. How much offcut is lying on your racks right now?"
As of Nov 6 the video has 99k views and 3,200 likes (TikTok). It isn't his first Fabora push. In Sep 27 he posted on Facebook "Just learning to weld, what should my machine be set to? Try Fabora Steel Tools": 471k views and 6,800 engagements. The same post got 98k views on TikTok. Instagram has two more clips covering welding parameters and railing spacing, both tagged #FaboraSteelTools.
Sheet Metal Samurai has 325k followers on Facebook and 133k on TikTok, and claims more than 750k across platforms. His TikTok bio lists "Collaborations" and a business email on a media company's domain. Whether these posts are paid partnerships isn't visible from outside, with no contracts in view. But the business email and the standard voiceover-review format suggest they probably are (inference).
What it is and who made it
The developer account lists an individual name, jason bennett, and behind it is Fabora Platform Ltd of Chesterfield, UK. Every channel leads with the same pitch: "Built by a working UK steel fabricator": made by a UK steel tradesman who still works on the floor. The founder's own TikTok, @faboraplatform, has 119 videos, mostly shop-floor footage plus feature demos, each getting a few hundred views, with 450 followers.
Fabora was originally a small brand making software for the UK steel industry. Its main product is a web app for fabrication, on-site welding and steel-erection firms that writes safety method statements (RAMS), at £24.99 a month. Steel Tools is its third product line.
The app has three tiers:
| Tier | What's inside | How it charges |
|---|---|---|
| Free | 14 tools: steel weight, unit conversion, tank volume, rebar takeoff, weld-defect checks, duty cycle, gas cylinders, triangle solvers, diagonal checks, a section library, screen rulers and angle meters. Unlimited use, no account needed. | Free |
| Pro | Adds 19 more: welding parameters (MIG / TIG / stick / flux-cored), beam calculators, stair and spiral-stair layout (with OSHA checks), cut lists and nesting, plate nesting, quotes and quote books, photo annotation, and 1:1 DXF / PDF output. | Monthly or annual, with a 7-day free trial. One Android review mentions an annual fee of $47.99. |
| Max | Adds invoices, signed delivery notes, welding procedure specs (WPS), DXF import, automatic comparison of two CAD drawing versions, and AI photo reading of drawings and parts lists, plus counting bar ends from a photo of the cross-section, 100 uses per month. | Monthly or annual, no trial. Sold only in the US, Canada, UK, Ireland, Australia and New Zealand. |
It ships with six unit systems (US, UK, EU, Mexico, Australia, India) and section libraries, in 7 languages. In 3 months it has shipped 21 versions; the latest, 1.0.21, came out in Nov 2. One detail shows how much the author cares about the US market: in one release, the US-store notes use the example "2x2 tube" and say that "36½, 8 ft 6 in" notation can now be read. They also specifically note that colour matching now uses the American spelling "gray." The UK-store note for the same release uses "40 × 40 SHS" (App Store US and UK update notes, 11-02).
How big it really is
Not big, and most of the volume is on Android:
| Metric | Sources | |
|---|---|---|
| Android downloads | Google Play shows 10,000+; third-party estimates put the lifetime total at about 26k, and about 9,100 in the last 30 days. | Google Play and AppBrain (estimate), early November |
| Android ratings | 40 in total, average 2.4 | AppBrain |
| iOS ratings | US store: 16 charted at 4.5 stars; UK: 3; Australia: 1 | App Store,11-06 |
| iOS charts | Best rank on Ireland's Utilities Top Grossing chart was #41; Croatia #192. Charts in 1 to 4 countries' category charts each day. | App Store charts, 10-28 to 11-06 |
About 30 Android downloads in the last 9,100 days, which landed right after the Sheet Metal Samurai videos. Ireland's Utilities Top Grossing bar is low, so #41 could correspond to only a few subscriptions. That shows people are paying, not how much revenue there is (inference). US downloads and revenue aren't visible from outside.
Where users come from
Ranked by volume:
- Niche creator voiceovers. The Sheet Metal Samurai videos above are the only source that reached hundreds of thousands of views. Notably, the videos mostly demo basics that older competitors also offer, like welding parameters and railing spacing. Only the Oct 31 video showed the new feature, AI reading of parts lists.
- Meta and TikTok paid acquisition. Its privacy policy says that with user consent the app sends ad attribution back to TikTok and Meta. The website also runs the Meta Pixel to "measure downloads and trials from Facebook and Instagram ads." How much was spent isn't visible.
- Free web tools on the website. faboraplatform.com/tools hosts 11 no-login web tools (steel weight, welding gases, hot-work permits, RAMS checklists and so on), with UK-leaning keywords. Each page links to both app stores.
- Store search. The subtitle is "Weld, Pipe & Weight Calculator." Searching "steel weight calculator" or "metal fabrication" in the US store ranks it in the top 12.
- Founder's own videos and Product Hunt: brought almost no volume. On Product Hunt it got 2 upvotes and placed #147 for the day.
Will people pay? Subscriptions get trashed in the welding crowd
Small shop owners have a reason to pay: quotes, invoices, exporting DXF to plasma or laser cutters, photographing cut lists. All of it saves time and helps them win jobs. An Android five-star review says they "paid from day one."
But on Android, 2.4 average rating, nearly every bad review is about the same thing: the subscription.
"$47.99 a year? No thanks." (Google Play review)
"Who pays a monthly subscription for a standard calculator?" (Google Play review)
Welders are used to one-time purchases. The oldest player in this niche, Calculated Industries, sells physical calculators and apps you pay for once. Apprentices and workers who come in through free tools don't want to subscribe. The ones who will pay are shop owners who need to quote and draw, and the creator videos bring mostly the first group (inference).
Who it's competing with
| Competitors | Scale | How it differs from Fabora |
|---|---|---|
| Pocket Welder Helper(Josh Butcher) | On Android since 2014, 100k+ downloads, 4.3 rating; about 30 installs in the last 900 days; on iOS since November 2025, 0 rating in the US store | Welding reference book style, focused on machine settings, consumables, and certification. Doesn't do nesting, drawing, quoting, or invoicing. |
| Calculated Industries (Pipe Trades Pro, Construction Master) | US iOS store 4,406 to 40k+ ratings | Veteran one-time-purchase calculators for the trades. Only does math. No drawings, no quotes. |
| Miller and Hobart welding calculators | US iOS store 80 / 9 ratings | Free tools from welding machine makers that only give welding parameters |
| Assorted "Steel Weight Calculator" apps | US iOS store: a few dozen to 300 ratings each | Single-function, ad-supported, mostly from Indian developers |
| WelderCalc, WeldSet, Weldwise, WeldMaster, Tack and others that appeared in 2026 | US iOS store mostly 0 ratings | Small single-function apps that load the "Welding Calculator" keyword. No real distribution. |
| Fab Shop Toolkit(Jim Wellman) | 7 single-function apps. One was covered by The Fabricator in September. Scale unverified. | Also built by people from working fab shops, but free, split across 7 apps, and no iOS version |
Welding calculators are not in short supply. What's missing is one app that covers everything a fab shop has to calculate, draw, and invoice in a day. I see no sign anyone is copying Fabora; the new welding calculators from the same period are each doing their own thing. Only welders and sheet metal creators on short video know it. Revenue is not public, nobody talks about it on X, and no media has written about it.
Where it falls short
- The payment model doesn't match the audience. The subscription model is the main reason for its low rating. There's no one-time or lifetime tier.
- It barely took off on iOS. US iOS has 16 ratings, while the creators' audience is on Facebook, mostly Android users (inference).
- The videos sell the free features. The paid features that make money for shops (quotes, drawings, AI photo reading) get little screen time. Only 10-31 shows them.
- Only welding and structural steel are covered. Electricians, HVAC, plumbers, carpenters and other trades have trade accounts with hundreds of thousands of followers, and there's the same pattern: lots of single-function calculators, no one has built a full workbench (inference; not checked trade by trade).
If it were you
Bottom line: Fabora itself is still small, and its revenue isn't proven. But the path is clear and cheap: someone who knows a trade builds a complete phone toolkit for it and pays a creator in that trade to sell it on video. Almost nobody is doing this. It's worth a test. The open question is whether subscriptions can make money with blue-collar users.
Who it suits: indie developers who have worked in a trade or have people close to them who do (electrical, HVAC, plumbing, carpentry, machining, painting, tile), and who can turn industry standards and code clauses into calculations and checks, not just plug in a formula.
Who it doesn't suit: people hoping to win on broad traffic and ASO. Single-function calculators already crowd these keywords, and a new app with a 0 rating gets nothing from just being listed. It also doesn't suit people who don't know the trade. A tradesperson will spot a wrong number immediately, and creators won't work with you.
How to build it: pick one trade and make the free tier work offline in the shop, with no account, no ads, and better than the old calculators. Put only the money-making features behind payment: quotes, invoices, drawings, photo reading of drawings or cut lists, and code self-checks. On pricing, avoid Fabora's mistake: offer a one-time or lifetime tier alongside the subscription, or subscribe only for business features. Use the same codebase and swap in country-specific codes and profile libraries. Launch in the US first, then the UK, Australia and Canada.
How to get users: on Facebook, TikTok and Instagram, find trade accounts with 100k to 500k followers that list a business email in the bio. One video can reach hundreds of thousands of views. Have the videos demo paid features (like photographing a drawing to generate a cut list), not basic calculations. Put a dozen or so login-free web tools on the website to catch search traffic.
When to move: before the first half of 2027. AI photo reading is still a fresh selling point. Big companies and the veteran calculator makers haven't caught up. Once players like Calculated Industries or the welding machine makers add the same features to their free apps, the selling point is gone.
How you'd know you're wrong: (1) six months on, Fabora's Android rating is still in the 2 range and its US iOS rating hasn't passed 100, and downloads fall back once the creator videos stop. That would mean these users don't pay and the volume was bought. (2) You run paid placements with two or three trade creators, and fewer than 2% of trial users convert to paid from each video. That would mean the unit economics don't work.

Fabora: Steel & Metal Tools (ios_6788312316) research report
Research date 2026-11-06. App Store id 6788312316. Developer: jason bennett (Fabora Platform Ltd, Chesterfield, UK). Listed 2026-07-30. Category: Utilities.
One line
A UK steel fabrication shop owner (Jay / Jason Bennett) built this "welding / steel fabrication 34-in-1 offline toolbox." 15 tools are free, and the rest sit behind a Pro / Max subscription. The traction it has comes mainly from paying US sheet metal creator Sheet Metal Samurai (about 750k followers across platforms) to make demo videos, plus Meta / TikTok paid ads and SEO from free web tools on the website. Most of the volume is on Android (about 26k total downloads, roughly 30 thousand in the last 9.1 days), and iOS is tiny (16 ratings in the US store). The product itself has real depth (OSHA ladders, spiral stairs, nesting, DXF export, photo reading of cut lists), but the subscription model gets it trashed in the welding community, and its Android rating is only 2.4.

Note: the Irish Utilities Top Grossing chart has a very low bar, so #41 may correspond to only single-digit subscriptions. It only shows that people paid, not how much revenue. Our appstore library has no US record for it (we only tracked ie / hr), so we can't get its US rating growth curve.
II. Competitors
| Product | Where | Launched | Scale | How it differs from Fabora |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Pocket Welder Helper(Josh Butcher) | Android + iOS + web | Android since 2014, iOS since 2025-11 | Android 100k+ (AppBrain estimates 130k installs, 4.33 stars / 398 ratings); but only about 920 installs in the last 30 days; iOS US store 0 ratings | A long-established welding reference app, focused on welding settings, filler metals and certification prep; Fabora leans toward "the fab shop doing jobs": nesting, cut-optimization, stair / ladder layout, quoting, invoicing, DXF |
| Pipe Trades Pro Calc / Construction Master(Calculated Industries) | iOS / Android / physical calculators | 2010–2013 | US iOS 4,406 / 40k+ ratings | A classic big-brand "industry calculator", sold as a one-time purchase; it only calculates, with no drawings and no quoting |
| Miller Weld Setting Calculator, Hobart Welding Calculator (Miller Electric) | iOS / Android | 2011, 2014 | US iOS 80 / 9 ratings | Free tools from welder makers, giving only welding parameters |
| Steel Weight Calculator / Metal Weight Calculator (Valaji Global), steelyard, etc. | iOS / Android | 2017–2023 | US iOS: 66–300 ratings each | Single-function "steel weight" calculators, mostly by developers in India, with ads |
| A new wave of "Welding Calculator" apps over 2026 years: WelderCalc, WeldSet (PLAYRIOT), Weldwise, WeldMaster, Tack, etc. | iOS | 2026-03 to 09 | US iOS store mostly 0 ratings | Single-function small apps that stuff the "Welding Calculator" keyword into their names, with almost no traction |
| Fab Shop Toolkit(Jim Wellman,Fab Shop Resources) | Android + Microsoft Store | 2026-09 | 7 single-function small apps, one covered by The Fabricator (2026-09-09) | The same "frontline fab shop people building it themselves" story, but split into 7 free apps, with no subscription and no iOS |
| Weld It 3D, etc. | iOS | 2020 | 20k ratings | A game; the search results just matched the keyword |
Takeaway: welder / steel-structure calculators aren't scarce; what's missing is one app that covers everything a fab shop calculates in a day. Fabora's edge is breadth (34 tools), exporting 1:1 DXF / PDF drawings, business features like quotes / invoices / delivery notes, and AI photo reading of drawings / cut lists (Max).
III. Growth levers (where users come from)
- Paid creator: Sheet Metal Samurai (Adam Fleisch), the main evidence
- A US sheet-metal tradesman with 325k Facebook followers, 133k TikTok followers, and a claimed 750k+ across the web; his TikTok bio reads "Collaborations: [email protected]" (he takes brand deals).
- Starting around 2026-09-27, he posted several pieces for Fabora: a Facebook video "New to welding… Try the Fabora Steel Tools app" with 471k views and 6.8 thousand engagements (FB); the same content got 98k views on TikTok (2026-09-27); 2026-10-31 TikTok "I took a PHOTO of my parts list and it built my cut list" with 99k views; Instagram also has two reels on welding parameters and railing spacing (tagged #Fabora #FaboraSteelTools).
- The timing lines up: Android got about 9.1 thousand downloads in the last 30 days (AppBrain), right after Sheet Metal Samurai's videos. The store description was also rewritten around then in US terms (AISC, ASTM, ipm, CFH, OSHA, US spelling "gray"), suggesting he shifted focus to the US market.
- Whether it was a paid deal: the creator has a business email and the content follows a standard spoken-review format, so it's likely paid, but there's no direct evidence (unverified).
- A search also turned up a Fabora review by a female creator ("She highlights three key features"); her account is unverified.
- Paid acquisition (Meta + TikTok): the privacy policy says that in the app, "only if you say yes, ad measurement to TikTok and Meta", and the website has the Meta Pixel installed to "measure and improve our ads on Facebook and Instagram… app downloads… trial signups" (privacy policy). This suggests they run Meta / TikTok ads. Fabora isn't in our metaads or tiktokads libraries (not on the tracking list; not finding it doesn't mean it isn't advertising).
- Founder posts content himself: TikTok @faboraplatform (450 followers, 119 videos, a few hundred views each), with real shop-floor footage and feature demos; also posts on LinkedIn, Instagram and YouTube Shorts. Reach is small; the purpose is building trust and announcing updates.
- SEO / free web tools: faboraplatform.com/tools hosts 11 no-login browser tools (steel weight, welding gas, hot work permits, RAMS checklists, etc., aimed at UK keywords), and the pages send traffic to the App Store / Google Play (with utm tags). The main site's B2B product Fabora RAMS (£24.99/month) also funnels traffic to it.
- Product Hunt: the maker submitted it themselves, got 2 votes, ranked #147 that day, and wasn't featured (hunted.space); it didn't help.
- Store search: in the US store, searching "steel weight calculator" or "metal fabrication" ranks it in the top 12; the title is "Steel & Metal Tools", the subtitle "Weld, Pipe & Weight Calculator", targeting keywords.
4. Why users stay and pay
- Built by someone who works in the trade: "Built by a working UK steel fabricator" is the core pitch across every channel, and the founder's TikTok shows his own shop. Welders are very sensitive to whether someone really knows the job; this identity is why Sheet Metal Samurai would take the deal and viewers would trust it.
- Offline, no account, no ads: shops and job sites often have no signal; older single-function calculators are often ad-supported.
- Usable straight on the job: 1:1 DXF / PDF can be sent to plasma / laser cutters; quotes, quote books, invoices and delivery notes are "money tools" for small shop owners, the main reason to pay a subscription (one 5-star Android review says "paid for it from the start").
- AI photo reading of cut lists / drawings (Max): the main feature of that 10-31 creator video, and a new selling point traditional calculators don't have.
- Downside: in Android's 40 ratings, the negative reviews focus on the subscription model ("$47.99 per year, I don't think so", "Who would pay a monthly subscription for access to a standard calculator?"), with an average of 2.42. Welders are used to one-time purchases (Calculated Industries is one-time), so the subscription is its weak spot.
5. Differentiation
Its biggest difference from similar apps is that it turned a "calculator" into a "pocket workbench for small fab shops": 34 tools in one app, including drawing output (DXF / PDF), compliance checks (OSHA / IMC ladder rules), quotes and invoices, and AI drawing reading, plus 6 sets of regional standards / section libraries (US, UK, EU, Mexico, Australia, India). This difference is why it can charge subscriptions, but it's not why it gets seen. Being seen comes from creator videos and paid ads, and the videos mostly demo basics like welding parameters and railing spacing, which older competitors also have. So: differentiation decides whether it can earn money, distribution decides whether anyone shows up.
6. Visibility
- Revenue isn't public (not on TrustMRR, and the founder hasn't shared it); X turns up nothing (x-radar: 90 days, 0 posts); the press hasn't covered it (The Fabricator wrote about a different company, Fab Shop Toolkit).
- In the short-video circles for welding / sheet metal it was pushed a few times by a big account, with several hundred thousand impressions. → Spreading within a small circle.
VII. Copycats
No direct copies of Fabora were seen. Over 2026 years a batch of "Welding Calculator" apps appeared on iOS (WelderCalc, WeldSet, Weldwise, WeldMaster, Tack, etc.), but they're all single-function small apps with almost no ratings (0). They appeared around the same time as Fabora, each doing its own thing, not copying it.
VIII. Takeaways
- "Built by people who know the trade" + "big vertical creators doing spoken promos": blue-collar trades (welders, sheet metal, electricians, HVAC, carpenters) have trade creator accounts with hundreds of thousands of followers on FB / TikTok / IG who take brand deals, where one video can reach hundreds of thousands of views at a cost far below broad-audience paid traffic. Fabora's founder can do this alone.
- Free tools for breadth + business features to charge for: free basic calculations bring people in, while quotes, invoices, drawing output and AI reading sit behind the paywall. The one paying is the shop owner, not the apprentice.
- Swap standards by region: the same codebase switches between US AISC / ASTM, UK BS, and India IS section libraries, which opens several English-speaking markets; its focus has already shifted from the UK to the US.
- Free web tools as an SEO entry point, funneling traffic to the app.
- Lesson: blue-collar users resent subscriptions; a one-time purchase or lifetime tier may earn better reviews more easily (Android's 2.4 stars are the price paid for this).
9. What I'm still unsure about
- Whether the Sheet Metal Samurai promotion was paid, and how much (unverified).
- How much was spent on Meta / TikTok ads and where (not in the ad libraries).
- iOS US downloads and revenue (no US record in the library; the Irish #41 bar is very low).
- 9.1 thousand installs / 30 days are AppBrain estimates, not official Google numbers.
