Said it was for mutual outfit feedback, but within minutes of signing up I had 100 messages: the "video call shell" business on the Japanese App Store
What it is A Japanese adult video chat app dressed up as "outfit sharing": male users only, paying points to chat and video with female hosts, with video calls at roughly ¥270–440 per minute.
Why it took off It copies a template that already works: a fake description to get past review, keyword-stuffed titles to win search, and an off-the-shelf host backend. It feeds on older Japanese male users who move between similar apps. The price per unit is high, so a couple hundred ratings is enough to reach the Social top-grossing chart.
DHow you could follow it Not recommended as a copy. The three things worth learning: put generic category terms in the title to win search, use high per-use pricing so a few users get you onto the grossing chart, and climb low-barrier categories like lifestyle, business, and health, applied to a legitimate product.

On the Japanese App Store, KOHAKU calls itself a "daily outfit-sharing video call app." In practice it's an adult live-chat app: men only, points deducted per minute, video chats with hosts who earn commissions. It has fewer than 250 ratings but has stayed around #70–80 on Japan's Social top-grossing chart. This piece covers how it makes money, why a new shell keeps appearing every month, and why this business isn't one you should follow.
A dating-review blogger's signup
On Aug 5, 2026, six days after KOHAKU launched, a Japanese dating-app review blog called "出会いPOLICE" signed up. The signup page doesn't let you pick a gender, so the blogger was registered as male. The blogger wrote: "使い始めたらものの数分で100件のメッセージを超えました" (within minutes of using it, the messages passed 100). The women messaging were "別サイトやアプリから参加", chatlady hosts brought in from other sites or apps who earn commissions from male spending. Some had identical profile photos with different ages, some suggested meeting in person once they were "close," and others steered him toward LINE and external websites.
The store page, though, says something else:
"KOHAKU (コハク)" is a daily outfit-sharing video call app! For fashion-loving guys and girls, post what you're wearing today and have fun together!
The blogger's conclusion was blunt: there is no outfit feature. It's a video chat app disguised with a fake description to get past review. From August to October, four more review blogs (hibana, deaihyoka, lovematching, sagi-site) tested it independently and reached the same conclusion.
What it actually sells
The features are viewing profiles, posting on the bulletin board, chatting, sending photos and videos, voice and video calls, and watching livestreams. Everything is paid in points:
| Action | Points | Approx. yen (est.) |
|---|---|---|
| Send a message | 60pt | About ¥70–115 |
| View a photo | 75pt | About ¥90–145 |
| Watch a video | 120pt | About ¥140–230 |
| Voice call | 160pt / minute | About ¥190–310 |
| Watch a livestream | 200pt / minute | About ¥235–385 |
| Video call | 230pt / minute | About ¥270–440 |
Sources: hibana (08-06), lovematching (10-01), and sagi-site (10-21) hands-on tests. The best in-app value tier is ¥2,900 for 1,900pt. Signup gives 250pt, just enough to send 4 messages or 1 minutes of video, and then you have to top up. lovematching also mentions that points are sold both "via in-app purchase" and "via credit card," which suggests a payment route outside the App Store that bypasses Apple's commission (the rate is unverified).
The developer is listed as an individual, "Sawa Nagai," and this is the only app on the account. There's no operating company, no legally required seller disclosure under Japan's specified commercial transactions law, and no filing number for an introduction business. The privacy policy and terms of service sit on a single note.com page.
A couple hundred ratings, so how did it chart?
The App Store Japan numbers (10-28 to 11-06):
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Launched | 2026-07-31, Japan store only, 17+ |
| Rating | 10-28 has 212, 11-06 has 243, average 4.08; 3–5 new ratings per day |
| Social, Top Free | Ranked 51–65 |
| Social, Top Grossing | Ranked 67–81, peaked at #11-06 on 67 |
| Third-party monthly revenue estimate | Searvia estimates $5–100k (modeled from rank, unverified) |
Few users, but each one pays a lot. A 10-minute video call costs ¥3,000 to ¥4,000 in Japanese yen, so one regular's spending in a single night can match hundreds of users on a typical app. That means it doesn't need many downloads to stay on the Top Grossing chart.
Only 5 Apple reviews, and one three-star review sums it up: "このアプリ系ならいつもは1日10ポイントもらえるデイリーボーナスある" (apps like this usually have a daily bonus of 10 points). The reviewer has used more than one "app like this."
A new shell every month
KOHAKU didn't invent this. It's a template with an "outfit" skin. The video chat listings on 出会いPOLICE from 2026 7 to October include Age, マンモス, チーター, ヒビキ, カタル, KOHAKU, パパイヤ, シロップ, Chapple, and ジョーカー, roughly one new one a month. The skins have moved from running, fitness, posture practice, and interview practice to outfits, but the structure is identical: "ビデオ通話" and "掲示板" in the title to win search, and a description telling a plausible, legitimate-sounding story that hides a points-based video chat.
The people paying are middle-aged Japanese men who already use these apps. When a shell gets pulled or the users get bored, a new one replaces it. New shells keep users with first-top-up discounts and fresh faces for the first few months. The female hosts aren't recruited by each app. They most likely come from a host backend or white-label system shared by several shells (inferred), which is why an individually run account can have "women" online the day it launches.
Where users come from: only two things are confirmed. Users rotate between similar apps (the review above), and five review blogs gave "KOHAKU" some search results, though all of them are negative. I found no discussion on X or TikTok. I could not verify whether it runs adult ads or affiliate ads.
It's only mid-tier among its peers.
| Product | Launched | Scale (App Store Japan store, 11-06) | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|

| KOHAKU | 2026-07 | 243 ratings, 7 days +23, Social Top Grossing #67 | Priced a bit above peers, and growth is slower. |
KOHAKU has no functional differences from its peers. The only difference is the fashion-sharing disguise, and that disguise is not why it took off. It charts because this template works on its own.
If it were you
D: Learn about it, but don't follow it. The model does make money; KANADE's four years alive prove it. But what followers can copy is only a shell. The part that actually makes it run is out of your reach, and you shouldn't try to get it.
- Why not follow: The core tactic is using a fake pitch to get past Apple review, skipping the Specified Commercial Transactions disclosure and the dating-introduction notification, and relying on commission-earning hosts and suspected sakura (paid shills) to push payments. In Japan this breaks the Dating Site Regulation Act, the Specified Commercial Transactions Act, and App Store rules all at once. A report could get the whole developer account banned. The host supply sits in someone else's backend, new shells appear every month, and the new shells all compete for the same group of older users.
- Not for: People who want to build a product they can run long-term under their own name; people without access to Japanese adult-industry hosts; people who can't handle the risk of their account being banned at any time.
- The three tactics worth borrowing, applied to a legit product: Put generic category terms in the title (things like 「ビデオ通話」「掲示板」) to win store search. High-priced, per-use products can reach the top grossing charts without many users. Pick low-barrier categories like Lifestyle, Business, or Health to chart: 84 ratings was enough to reach the top 30 of Business Top Grossing.
- A legitimate way to follow: If you really want to build a paid companionship chat for Japanese men, go web-based with the required disclosures and credit-card payments, like DMM ライブチャット or チャットピア, which have a company behind them and proper disclosures. That is a capital-heavy business, not something one person can build on weekends.
- What would show I've misread this: (1) Apple hasn't pulled KOHAKU or the same-batch shells in 2027 years, and new shells keep appearing monthly. That would mean review is looser than it looks and the window is longer. (2) If someone publicly gets access to a compliant white-label host backend (with a company and proper filings) that an individual developer can legitimately plug into, then "do it in another country" is worth reconsidering, for example in Korea or the Taiwan store.

One line
The store page says it's a video call and bulletin board SNS for daily sharing of outfits. In practice it's an adult live-chat app for men only: paid in points, with chat and video sessions run by commission-earning female hosts (チャットレディ). It's another shell in the Japanese App Store's 「ビデオ通話で〇〇見せ合い」 disguise template. Among peers it's mid-tier: nothing new, and what it has achieved comes from the template itself.

KOHAKU can sit on the Social Top Grossing chart not because it has many users, but because each user pays a lot (see section 3).
2. What it actually is (not stated on the store page)
Five Japanese dating-app review blogs (all of which earn affiliate commissions by sending traffic to established dating services such as Jメール and ワクワクメール) each signed up and tested it between 1 weeks and 3 months after launch:
- Disguise: It's described as outfit sharing, but in practice it is 「そのような事は無くビデオ通話アプリにありがちなチャットレディだらけの卑猥なアプリ」 (an obscene app full of chat hosts, like most video-call apps). Gender can't be selected at sign-up; there are only male users, and women arrive from 「別サイトやアプリ」 (other sites and apps) (出会いPOLICE, 2026-08-05, deaipolice.com/kohaku/).
- Features: View profiles, post on the bulletin board, chat, send and receive photos and videos, voice calls, video calls, and watch live streams (hibana.rgr.jp/kohaku/, 2026-08-06). lovematching concludes it is simply 「ライブチャット」 and got past review by using false information about a fashion app (https://lovematching.jp/14787/,2026-10-01).
- Pricing (points): A message costs 60pt, viewing a photo 75pt, a video 120pt, voice 160pt/min, video call 230pt/min, and live stream 200pt/min. 1pt is about ¥1.17–1.92, and the first-purchase ¥800 tier works out to about ¥0.87/pt. The best in-app purchase deal is ¥2,900 for 1,900pt (¥1.53/pt). Converted, a video call costs about ¥269–442/min, so a 10-minute call runs ¥2,690–4,420 (hibana; lovematching; sagi-site.com/dating/42317/,2026-10-21). 出会いPOLICE says it's more expensive than the market rate (about ¥280/min for calls). lovematching notes the point price varies depending on 「アプリ内課金にするのか、クレカ決済にするのか」 (in-app billing vs. credit card payment), which suggests a credit-card top-up route outside the App Store that avoids Apple's commission (not verified one by one).
- New users pushed to pay: sign-up gives 250pt, only enough for 4 messages or 1 minutes of video; 「ものの数分で100件のメッセージを超えました」(出会いPOLICE); lovematching reports getting lots of messages even at 9 a.m. on weekday mornings, suspects automated messages or サクラ (paid fake profiles); hibana noticed suspected AI-generated photos and accounts steering people to outside sites.
- Compliance: no operating company, no 特商法 disclosure (Japanese commerce law notice), no registration number for an opposite-sex introduction business; privacy policy and terms sit at note.com/kohaku_app_note (published 4 months ago); no age verification (hibana, sagi-site, 出会いPOLICE).
- Apple reviews (iTunes RSS jp, only 5 reviews): 「女の子可愛い子おおいです!!」(5 stars, 08-09), 「初回のポイントが貰えなかった」(2 stars, 08-05), 「このアプリ系ならいつもは1日10ポイントもらえるデイリーボーナスある」(3 stars, 08-04), 「そう言うアプリです。」(1 stars, title 🌸=サクラ, 09-22), 「美人ばかり」(5 stars, 10-06). The third review implies users already know this kind of app and came over from similar shells.
3. Why it took off
- The template has already been proven; this is just a new shell. Over 2025–2026 years there were many similar shells on the Japan App Store: ソラ(2025-08), MIYABI+(2026-04), Carina(2026-04), KAKERU running(2026-03), Sakura fitness(2026-03), パパイヤ posture training(2026-09), シロップ(2026-09), ジョーカー(2026-10), カシュー(2026-10), coco+ interview practice(2026-10) (found by searching names in the appstore library). 出会いPOLICE's same category listed Age, マンモス, チーター, ヒビキ, カタル, KOHAKU, パパイヤ, シロップ, Chapple and ジョーカー from 2026 7–October (deaipolice.com/category/videochat/), with a new shell nearly every month. KOHAKU's angle is the 「穿搭」 (outfit) theme.
- The demand is constant; it feeds on users moving between old apps. The people paying are middle-aged Japanese men who already use live chat / video call apps. The review 「このアプリ系ならいつもは…デイリーボーナス」 shows users switching among these apps. When a shell gets pulled or worn out, users move to the next new shell, which keeps people for its first few months with first-purchase deals and fresh faces.
- The money comes from high unit prices, not user volume. Video calls cost ¥270–440 per minute, so one person on a 10-minute call spends several thousand yen. That's why it has only a couple hundred ratings yet stays around #70 on the social Top Grossing chart. Searvia estimates monthly revenue at $50K–$100K (unverified).
- The supply is ready-made. Women are 「別サイトやアプリから参加」 (joining from other sites or apps) (出会いPOLICE), likely plugged into a shared チャットレディ (chat host) agency or a white-label backend (inference). So a developer under an individual's name can have 「women」 online on day one without recruiting hosts.
- Disguised to pass review, keyword-stuffed title. The title 「ビデオ通話 掲示板」 takes generic search terms, and the subtitle 「コハク 互いのファッションを見せあい」 (en_us localization) pitches an outfit-sharing story to the reviewers. This tactic is shared across the whole template.
4. Where users come from (growth levers)
| Channel | Evidence | Confirmed |
|---|---|---|
| Store search / keyword titles | The title takes the two generic terms 「ビデオ通話」 and 「掲示板」; similar apps name themselves this way. Search ranking not captured (iTunes search API returned nothing at the time) | Partly confirmed |
| Users switching from similar apps | Review 「このアプリ系ならいつもは1日10ポイント…」 | Confirmed (users do come from similar apps); scale unknown |
| Apple 「You might also like」 / cross-recommendation among similar apps | Jina 搜索结果里 KAKERU 的商店页出现了「掲示板 - KOHAKU ビデオ通話・掲示板でファッションを見せ合い!」 | Unconfirmed |
| Adult ads / affiliate ads | 出会いPOLICE broadly says these apps 「attract only men with obscene ads」; our ad library doesn't track it | Unconfirmed |
| Search visibility from review blogs | 5 in-depth articles (deaipolice 08-05, hibana 08-06, deaihyoka 08-11, lovematching 10-01, sagi-site 10-21). All are negative, steering readers to sites like Jメール; but they also gave the KOHAKU name search results | Existence of the articles confirmed; traffic they brought unknown |
| X / TikTok / creators | x-radar searched 90 days, 0 posts; TikTok search for 「ビデオ通話 KOHAKU」 returned nothing relevant | Confirmed none |

| 響 ビデオ通話 | iOS | 2026-08-19 | 86 ratings, Social Top Grossing #103 | Same-period shell, weaker than KOHAKU |
| DMM live chat, FANZA, チャットピア and other web sites | Web | Years | Large (unverified) | Run by real operating companies, going through web and affiliates; KOHAKU relies on disguise to get into the App Store |
| WEAR (a real outfit app) | iOS / web | Years | Big | Does real outfit content; KOHAKU just borrows the label |
VI. Differentiation
No functional differentiation: a points table, 250pt on signup, チャットレディ supply, and the board-plus-video-call structure are basically the same as other shells. The only thing setting it apart is the 「outfit」 shell, a slightly higher price, and 出会いPOLICE's view that it costs more than the going rate. Those differences are not why it succeeded. It grew because this template plus users rotating between shells already drives volume. In the data it looks weak within its category: growth clearly lags same-period Carina and MIYABI+, and later launches like ジョーカー and シロップ.
7. How visible it is
- Revenue is not public, the developer is an individual name, and there is no public presence.
- 5 dating-review blogs have covered it, all negatively; nothing on X, TikTok or the media.
- Copycats: this is a whole template, with a new shell nearly every month (ジョーカー, シロップ, カシュー, パパイヤ, coco+, Petomi, etc.). It's already crowded inside the niche and barely known outside it.
VIII. Takeaways
- Three things are legitimately worth borrowing. First, use generic category words in the title (「ビデオ通話」「掲示板」) to compete for store search. Second, high-priced, pay-per-use products can reach the top grossing charts without many users. Third, push for charts in low-barrier categories (lifestyle, business, health), which later shells are already doing.
- What not to copy is the core playbook: fake descriptions to get past review, skipping the 特商法 disclosure and dating-service filings, and luring payments through commission-based hosts or suspected サクラ (paid fake users). These carry takedown risk and legal risk (特商法 and the 出会い系 regulations), and one report can get the whole account banned.
9. What I'm still unsure about
- Actual revenue (Searvia's figure is a model estimate; the threshold for #70 on jp social Top Grossing is unknown).
- Whether the backend and host supply are shared with other shells through the same white-label vendor and the same operator (the individual developer name is probably a front).
- Whether it runs adult ad networks or affiliate ads; how much spending happens through credit card top-ups outside the app.
- Whether Apple will pull it, and how long it can last.
