Hiro for 壽司郎 / Hiro for Sushiro · Yui Chit Chan

# It launched on the same day Hong Kong was scrambling for a Sushiro queue tool, yet it only got 3 ratings. What went wrong for Hiro for 壽司郎

**What it is** An unofficial Sushiro queue app: it shows the number being called at each branch, sends a push alert when your turn is near, and predicts which time slots are quiet. It covers eight Asian markets and sells weekly, monthly, and yearly subscriptions.

**Why it took off** It didn't, really. Hong Kong's Sushiro queue tools did blow up on Threads, but the attention went to free web pages and "我要食壽司郎". Its rankings on the Thailand and Hong Kong Food & Drink Top Grossing charts come from those charts' low bar: a couple of subscriptions is enough to get on.

**C** **How you could play it** Don't copy Hiro itself. Copy the approach: find a popular chain with long queues where the official app lacks call-number alerts and no local third-party tool exists. Build it free, launch with a push on local social platforms, then add features nobody else has, like "which time slot is quietest".

Grade C: the "popular chain + clunky official app" pattern is worth learning, and you can build it in a week or two. But Hong Kong Sushiro is already crowded with free clones. Once one of these takes off, someone copies it for free, and relying on unofficial APIs means it can be cut off at any time. Hard to turn into steady revenue. Few people know about it yet

On 2026 Jul 21, Hong Kong developer Jacob shipped Hiro, a sushi-restaurant queue app, to the App Store. The same day, a Threads post recommending a free queue-tracking web page hit 329k views. The need was real and the timing was right, and Hiro was more complete than the rest: eight markets, seven languages, queue push alerts, wait-time prediction. Three and a half months later it had 3 ratings worldwide. A free competitor that launched three weeks after it had 238. This piece covers why Hiro didn't take off, and whether a small tool for 'popular chain + clunky official app' can work with a different approach.

### Why Hong Kongers want a third-party queue app

Sushiro in Hong Kong doesn't take reservations, so you often wait one or two hours (unwire, 07-08). The official "香港壽司郎" app lets you take a number, but since 2026 May it has stopped showing the live number being called, and people complained on Threads, with the post reaching 81.6k views (05-27). The official app also won't push you an alert when your turn is near.

So in early July, a free web page called Sushi Long appeared: open it and see the current number at each branch, with a map and a mini-game. unwire (07-08) and Sing Tao (07-10) both reported on it. On Jul 21, another free tracker, sushiro-hk-tracker.gosa.app, was recommended by the Threads account @eat1000, with 329k views and 7,800 likes. In August, Sushi Long announced it was shutting down because it relied on an unofficial API (unwire, 08-18).

The slot left empty in Aug 15 was picked up by a free app: "我要食壽司郎" ("I Want Sushiro") by Hugo Lee. Within a day of launch, a review read "threads 見到好似幾好用就 down jor" ("saw it on Threads, looked pretty useful, downloaded"). U Lifestyle and HKET followed with coverage. On Threads, people are already joking: "What's the beef between Sushiro and vibe coding anyway."

### What Hiro is

Hiro was the most "complete" app in this wave:

- It covers Sushiro branches in eight places: Japan, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Singapore, Thailand, mainland China, Indonesia, and Malaysia. It detects your region automatically.

- You can see each branch's queue status, wait time, how many groups are ahead of you, and the number currently being called. Save your number and follow it with Live Activities (lock screen, Dynamic Island) and push alerts.

- In the Sep 8 1.3 update, "Preview" was added: it shows, for each day of the week and each time slot, how long a store usually makes you wait.

- There are also per-country menus, a bill calculator by plate count (including service charge and tax), and widgets. The interface is available in English, Cantonese, Traditional Chinese, Simplified Chinese, Japanese, Thai, Indonesian, and Malay.

It's free to download with a subscription: HK$8 per week, HK$18 per month, HK$168 per year (App Store Hong Kong page). The name differs by store: "Hiro for 壽司郎", "Hiro for Sushiro", "スシロー向けHiro". The store pages state it is an independent app with no connection to Sushiro.

It was made by Yui Chit Chan. Their personal site jacob.com.hk describes them as a full-stack developer in Hong Kong, and the site brags about 17.7B total AI tokens used, 6.4B of them Claude. This is the only app under their name. It launched in Jul 21, added mainland China in Aug 5, and had a version release in Sep 8 1.3, with no updates for the two months after.

### How the chart rankings came about

Judging by the charts alone, Hiro looks like it's making money: in Nov 6 it ranked #29 on the Thailand App Store Food & Drink Top Grossing chart, and #67 in Hong Kong. Since late October, it has bounced between #20 and #49 in Thailand and between #30 and #67 in Hong Kong. It also appears on the Food & Drink Top Free charts in Macau, Taiwan, and mainland China.

But on the same day, the Thailand chart's 15 to 40 spots were long-tail tools like Distiller, NYT Cooking, Paprika, and iBeer, which barely need any revenue to chart. Hiro has 0 ratings in Thailand yet ranks #29, most likely from one or two subscriptions (inferred). Global ratings total 10-28 1, and 11-01 went to 3, with no growth since. Hong Kong's 1 ratings are 5 stars, with no written reviews.

Compare it with the Hong Kong competitors over the same period:

| | Hiro for 壽司郎 | 我要食壽司郎 | Official 香港壽司郎 |
|---|---|---|---|
| Launched | 2026-07-21 | 2026-08-15 | Years ago |
| Paid | Weekly HK$8 / monthly HK$18 / yearly HK$168 subscription | Free, in-app purchases are tips | Free |
| Coverage | 8 markets | Hong Kong only | Hong Kong only |
| Ratings (Hong Kong, 11-06) | 1 | 238 ratings, 4.9 stars | 19,494 |
| Media and Threads | Nothing found | Covered by U Lifestyle and HKET, went viral on Threads | — |

The comments under "I Want to Eat Sushiro" read: "Thanks, senior, you're feeding the hungry" / "I'm a useless person, thanks technology" / "Now I can eat Sushiro every day without a worry." Hong Kongers just want this one thing. The free version already does it well enough.

### Where it falls short

**In its main market, Hong Kong, it charged money and no one else did.** Hong Kong users learned about these tools from Threads and the press, and what they saw were the free, covered ones. A new app asking HK$8 a week is hard to pay for while you're standing in line.

**No one was promoting it.** Searching Hiro and Sushiro on Threads, X, and TikTok turns up no posts from it and no mentions by others. There was no press coverage, and no ad spend could be found. Its only confirmed exposure was the store itself: the name includes 壽司郎 / Sushiro / スシロー, it's localized into eight stores, it catches people searching for Sushiro in each region, and it appears in the "you might also like" section of similar apps' pages.

**Eight markets, but most already had this.** Singapore, Malaysia, and Thailand's official apps already let you take a number and check the queue. Mainland China has Meituan queue numbers, official mini-programs, and WeChat call alerts, plus several free third-party queue web pages. Covering eight markets got it onto a few shallow charts, but it brought in no users.

The only thing it had that nobody else did was the "預見" time-slot prediction, and that feature only arrived in September, after Hong Kong's buzz had faded and users had already installed something else.

### What's worth copying is the model, not the app

Hiro proved two things. First, "popular chain + official app badly missing features (no call alerts, live numbers removed)" is a real need, and it keeps coming back: in this Hong Kong wave, at least three third-party tools appeared within two months, and each one was widely shared. Second, a tool like this can be built by one person with AI in a week or two, so the barrier is low. What decides the winner is who shows up first where users are scrolling, and whether they charge.

There's a shared risk too: almost all of these tools depend on unofficial APIs to get queue data. Sushi Long shut down for exactly this reason. If a brand changes its API, every app in this category breaks at once. Whether Hiro's data source has this problem can't be seen from outside (unverified).

### If it were you

**In one sentence: don't copy Hiro itself, since the Hong Kong Sushiro niche is full. What's worth learning is the approach: find a popular chain with long queues and a clunky official app, build a free tool, and launch it on local social platforms. But it's hard to turn that into steady revenue.**

- **Who it suits** : indie developers who want to practice, or build a portfolio and an audience with a small app; people with influence in a city's local social circles (who have Threads, Xiaohongshu, or Dcard accounts and can post to promote it themselves).

- **Who it doesn't suit** : people hoping to make a living from subscriptions. Once this kind of need is noticed, free clones appear right away, and the data API can be cut off by the brand at any time.

- **How to do it** : start with the scenario, not the code. Three criteria: queues often exceed an hour, the official app lacks call-number alerts or live numbers, and no third-party tool in that area has been widely shared yet. Candidates can come from complaint posts about "queue tools", "call numbers", and "waiting lists", such as other popular conveyor-belt sushi, hotpot, or ramen chains, or cities outside Japan and Taiwan that nobody has built for yet (inference). Copy the features: live numbers, push alerts when your turn is near, lock-screen Live Activities, and add Hiro's "when is the least crowded time", which none of the others have.

- **How to get users** : post on the platform locals use the day you launch. In Hong Kong that's Threads, in Taiwan Threads and Dcard, in mainland China Xiaohongshu. Getting a local food account to share it is best. Put the brand name plus "排隊 / 叫號" in the store listing to catch search. Keep it free or tip-based, and don't launch with a weekly subscription.

- **When to get in early** : these opportunities are triggered by events. They're worth the most in the weeks after an official app update removes a feature, or when a branch suddenly goes viral. By the time media starts writing "X best queue tools", it's already too late.

- **What a misread looks like** : within two weeks of launch, no local social posts share it on their own, and the rating count stays in single digits. Or you haven't grown at all before the brand blocks your API. If you see either, stop adding features.

Last tip for anyone scouting from the charts: category Top Grossing charts in small stores like Thailand and Hong Kong can have apps with 0 ratings in the top 30. Check whether ratings are growing first, then check the rank.

Where users come from

- **Verified** **Store search (titles carry the brand name + localized in 7 languages, covering 8 stores)** : store names are Hiro for 壽司郎 / Hiro for Sushiro / スシロー向けHiro; it shows up in related recommendations on pages like SushiMap and Singapore Sushiro, and in each store's food & drink category charts.

- **Verified** **Platform event: the official app dropped live calling + Sushi Long shut down** : a Threads post 2026-05-27 (81.6k views) said the official app no longer shows live calls; Sushi Long 2026-08 shut down (unwire 08-18). But most of the demand it left went to the free 我要食壽司郎.

- Inferred **Threads, media, creators** : found no posts or coverage by Hiro itself. x-radar has 120 posts in 0 days, and TikTok search returns nothing.

- Inferred **Paid ads (Apple Search Ads, etc.)** : no evidence, and the library doesn't track it.

## Hiro for 壽司郎 (ios_6788782936): why it made the list

> Short answer: **strictly speaking, it didn't break out.** It's an unofficial Sushiro queue and calling app built by Jacob (Yui Chit Chan), a Hong Kong full-stack developer, covering 8 markets and charging by subscription. It launched in July 202621, right in the middle of the Hong Kong "Sushiro queue tool" craze (the official app dropped live calling → the Sushi Long web page went viral → homemade trackers flooded Threads). But most of the traffic and word of mouth went to free alternatives, and it has only 3 ratings worldwide. The "Thailand Food & Drink Top Grossing #29" it appeared on at recall reflects how low that chart's bar is. It doesn't prove the app is earning.

### 1. What the product is

- Unofficial app covering queue status and calling alerts for Sushiro branches in Japan, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Singapore, Thailand, mainland China, Indonesia, and Malaysia, plus Live Activities, widgets, and menus. The 1.3 version (2026-09-08) added "Foresight": it shows typical wait times for each time slot, by day of the week. Source: App Store HK page [apps.apple.com/hk/app/id6788782936](https://apps.apple.com/hk/app/id6788782936), iTunes lookup (hk/th/tw/jp, 2026-11-06).

- Versions: 1.1 released 2026-07-21, 1.2 added mainland China on 08-05, 1.3 released on 09-08. No updates in the two months since.

- Pricing: free download + subscription, HK$8 per week / HK$18 per month / HK$168 per year (App Store HK page, "In-App Purchases").

- Developer: seller name Yui Chit Chan, copyright credit Jacob, privacy policy at jacob.com.hk/hiro/privacy. Personal site jacob.com.hk describes him as "Full Stack Developer Hong Kong", GitHub is imjac0b. He created a repo 2026-07-29, `hiro-popular-times` (public, no description), probably the data source for Foresight. The site also shows his AI usage: 17.7B tokens total, 6.4B of them Claude, a classic heavy AI-coding indie developer. This is his only 1 app.

### 2. Data: how big it is now

Source: appstore library app_day / app_profile, 2026-10-28 to 11-06.

| Store | Best category rank (Food & Drink) | Score |
|---|---|---|
| Thailand th | Top Grossing bounced between 20 and 49, peaking at #29 in 11-06 | 0 |
| Hong Kong hk | Top Grossing 30–67,11-06, peak #67 | 1 |
| Macau mo | Top Free 53–142 | 0 |
| Taiwan tw | Top Free 155–207 | 0 |
| Mainland China cn | Top Free 92–210 | 2 |

- Global ratings grew from 10-28 to 1 to 11-01 to 3 and then stopped growing. The library has no reviews for it.

- **The bar on Thailand's chart** : 11-06 Thailand Food & Drink Top Grossing #15–40 is long-tail tools like Distiller, NYT Cooking, Paprika, iBeer, and Ponda. Charting there takes almost no revenue (library v_chart). Yet it sat at #29 with 0 ratings, so a handful of subscriptions is enough for that spot. It also shows up in Appfigures and Apple's Thailand iPad Food & Drink chart (around #23–24, [apps.apple.com/th/ipad/charts/6023](https://apps.apple.com/th/ipad/charts/6023)). So the recall reason "actually taking in money" should be read as "occasional subscriptions."

- For comparison: in the same period, the free Hong Kong competitor 我要食壽司郎 (Hugo Lee, released 2026-08-15) had 238 ratings (4.9 stars) and charted #23–85 in HK Food & Drink Top Grossing, running on tips as in-app purchases. The official 香港壽司郎 had 19,494 ratings and ranked #16 on the HK Top Free chart.

### 3. Competitors

| Name | Where | When | Scale | How it differs from Hiro |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Sushiro in Hong Kong / Taiwan / Singapore / Indonesia / Malaysia, スシロー (official, AKINDO SUSHIRO) | iOS/Android | 2012–2025 | Japan 210k ratings, Taiwan 67k, Hong Kong 19k (library, 11-06) | The official app lets you book and take a queue number. But from 2026-05 on the HK version doesn't show live calling (Threads post 81.6k views), and there are no calling alerts. |
| 我要食壽司郎 (Hugo Lee) | iOS | 2026-08-15 | 238 ratings, HK Top Grossing 23–85 | HK only, free, tips as in-app purchases (HK$8/18/38). Has Live Activities, Dynamic Island, and alerts when a set number of groups is left. Covered by U Lifestyle and HKET, and went viral on Threads. |
| Sushi Long(sushirolic.web.app) | Web | About 2026-07 early | Covered by unwire (07-08) and Sing Tao (07-10), called the "official-quality" option on Threads | No install, free, with a map and mini games. 2026-08 voluntarily shut down over its unofficial API (unwire 08-18, am730, winandmac). |
| sushiro-hk-tracker.gosa.app | Web | 2026-07 | Threads recommendation post with 329k views and 7.8K likes (@eat1000,07-21) | Free web queue tracker, HK only |
| sushiro-vue(angus6b23) | Open source | Several years ago | GitHub open source | Ancestor of the HK queue dashboard |
| Sushiro queue sites sushiro.chinatsu1124.com, sushiro-overdose (GitHub), Meituan queue numbers + WeChat calling alerts | Web / open source / big-platform features | 2026 | Several in mainland China | Mainland users already have Meituan, official mini-program queuing, and calling alerts. Third-party web tools also estimate "what time to arrive so you're called when you want to eat". |
| Conveyor-belt plate counter for Sushiro | iOS | 2026-01 | 7 rating | Adjacent demand (charging by plate count) |

Bottom line: this category has no shortage of competitors. Hong Kong has several free ones, and they got popular first. Hiro's only unique edge is putting eight markets in one app, plus the Foresight time-slot forecast.

### 4. Growth tactics (evidence found)

- **Store search / related recommendations** : On the App Store and Appfigures it shows up under "You Might Also Like," on similar-app pages, and in the Food & Drink category chart (the SushiMap and Singapore Sushiro pages both list it). That's the only exposure we can confirm. The name uses "for 壽司郎 / for Sushiro / スシロー向け," putting the brand term in the title. With the app localized into 7 languages across 8 stores, it picks up searches for "壽司郎" and "Sushiro" in each market. That's its main acquisition channel.

- **Riding the Hong Kong buzz** : It launched on 07-21, the same day the gosa tracker posts were flooding Threads. Earlier, the official app removed live queue numbers at 2026-05, and Sushi Long got press coverage in early July, which woke up demand on a large scale. But I found no posts or coverage of Hiro by its creator on Threads, in the media, on X, or on TikTok. Searching "Hiro 壽司郎" and "Hiro for Sushiro" turns up nothing on Threads, X (x-radar, 120 days, 0), or TikTok.

- **Sushi Long 停运(2026-08)空出来的需求** :被免费的「我要食壽司郎」接住了(08-15 上架,08-16 就有评论写「threads 見到好似幾好用就 down」),没流向 Hiro。

- Ads: none found. The ad library only tracks products on its list, so it can't rule out that Hiro ran paid ads.

### 5. Why it "looks" like it broke out

1. The resurfacing signal came from very shallow category bestseller charts: the Food & Drink bestseller charts in Thailand and Hong Kong, where a few subscriptions are enough to chart in the long tail. The rating count of 3 is the real measure of its scale.

2. The demand is real: walk-in waits at Sushiro Hong Kong often run 1–2 hours (unwire), and after the official app dropped live queue numbers in May, at least 3 third-party tools showed up in Hong Kong between 2026 7–August, each one shared heavily.

3. It went one step further than the others: eight markets, multilingual support including Japanese and Thai, and time-slot forecasting. Outside Hong Kong it has almost no competitors, so it could chart in Thailand, Macau, Taiwan, and mainland China too.

### 6. Differentiation, and whether that's why it took off

- Differentiation: **covers eight markets** (rivals only do Hong Kong or only mainland China), **charges a subscription** (rivals are free or tip-based), and **"Predict" gives typical wait times by weekday and time slot** (other tools only show the current state).

- These differentiators never turned into scale. Hong Kong users learned about this kind of tool from Threads and the media, and what they got was the free, ad-free, already-covered options. Hiro charges a weekly subscription in Hong Kong, so it naturally lost to the free ones. Demand outside Hong Kong is weaker: the official apps in Singapore, Malaysia, and Thailand already let you take a number and check queues, and mainland China has Meituan and mini-programs. So covering eight markets only got it onto a few shallow charts and brought in no users.

### 7. Visibility and copycats

- Visibility: **Almost nobody knows about it yet.** No media coverage, no Threads or X discussion, no disclosed revenue, just 3 ratings.

- But the "Sushiro queue helper" category was already widely covered in Hong Kong (Sing Tao, unwire, U Lifestyle, HKET, am730, HungryTV), and the niche is crowded. On Threads someone even joked about "what beef does 壽司郎 have with vibe coding" (@maxmax624).

- Copycats: none have copied Hiro. It is itself one of the wave of tools.

### 8. What to borrow

- "Popular chain + official app pain points (no queue push notifications, or live queue removed)" is a small-tool opportunity that keeps coming back: live activities, Dynamic Island, push alerts, plus time-slot forecasting for "when it's least crowded." One person with AI could build it in a week or two.

- But in a market like Hong Kong, where media and Threads spread things fast, **being first, free, and getting someone on Threads to push it** matters more than feature count. To charge a subscription, look for the region where the official app is weakest and there's no free alternative.

- Plan for the risks upfront: it uses an unofficial API, which is exactly why Sushi Long shut down. If the brand changes its interface, every app like this stops working.

### 9. Still unclear

- How many paid subscriptions sit behind the Thailand and Hong Kong chart positions: Apple doesn't disclose this. It could be single digits, or developer self-purchases or purchases by friends and family. Unverified.

- Whether it runs Apple Search Ads: no evidence. Unverified.

- Whether Hiro's data source is an unofficial API and whether it could be shut down like Sushi Long: unverified.

- Where the hiro-popular-times data for "Predict" comes from (the repo is public but doesn't explain): unverified.
