# A dozen-plus products built "time-lapse study cameras", and only this Harvard dropout's got 216 ratings

**What it is** A camera-focused app: you prop up your phone and film yourself studying, compressed into a 10-second time-lapse video, with tracked study time and streaks, and friends and groups compete on who studies most.

**Why it took off** The founder is a Harvard study creator with 150k followers. It grew through his own Instagram, auto-DMs for "comment to get beta access," invite-code referrals, and the dropout founder story. It didn't win on a better product.

**C** **How you could follow it** Don't copy the study time-lapse. If you have your own niche audience, you can take the formula of "the product produces shareable video + group competition + invite codes" and apply it to fitness, instrument practice, drawing, or exam prep, with you on camera doing the acquisition.

C grade: at least seven or eight products with the same concept launched earlier, with US ratings between 0 and 21, which shows the product alone doesn't work. Latent ran on the founder's built-in audience and narrative, which followers can't copy. The playbook is worth learning, but copying the app isn't worth it. Circulating in a small circle

A Harvard-dropout study creator with 150k followers quit and built an app: film yourself studying, compress it into a 10-second time-lapse, then pull friends in to see who studies longest. In 5 weeks it reached 216 ratings and a 4.91 score. The same product had already launched seven or eight times before it, and the US app with the most ratings had only 21. This piece covers two things: how it took off, and why copying this product alone doesn't work.

### A post saying "growing too fast, it's terrible"

On 2026 Oct 18, the day the app was due to go public, Eddie Lou posted on LinkedIn: "my startup grew 8x this week. its horrible." He said Latent had only run invite-only for a week and the growth was "literally unsustainable," so the public launch was pushed back to hire first. The post got 280 engagements. The top comment was a joke from co-founder Malcolm McDonald: "1 to 8 users is crazy".

"Growing too fast, delaying launch" is good content by itself, and posting it added a layer of scarcity. The same day, someone on the App Store left a 2-star review: "How do I get the code if I don't know any friends who use the app?"—they wanted in, but had no code to get through the door.

Eddie is a Harvard psychology student who, according to his own LinkedIn post, dropped out in September 2026. His Instagram account @eddie_the_lou has 151K followers and posts about productivity, mindset and study methods. By his own timeline, the account grew to 100K followers between 2025 and 5 November, before there was any App.

### What it is

Latent calls itself a "focus camera." You prop your phone on the desk, press record and get to work. The app records a time-lapse, compresses it to about 10 seconds, then tags that session with a duration, and the sessions chain into a streak of consecutive days. You can add friends, form groups, see how long each other studied today, and nudge people who haven't moved. Its own pitch is "the Strava of studying."

"Recording a time-lapse to stop yourself from touching your phone" wasn't invented by Latent. Back in 2021 TikTok already had people posting "my #1 study hack: study time lapses," using the time-lapse mode built into the iPhone camera. Latent fixes three problems with the native camera:

- **Battery drain** : it dims the screen automatically while recording; the website says this saves roughly half the battery;

- **Storage hog** : videos are stored in the cloud;

- **Cheating** : switch out of the app and the timer stops.

One user (US store, 10-12) put it most directly: "I already record myself as a way to get off my phone when working, and this is a great way to reinforce that!" The need was already there; the app just makes the habit smoother.

It's currently completely free, with no in-app purchase price list. The website FAQ says "Latent is free," and it hasn't charted in the Top Grossing list in any store.

### How big it is now

| | Metric | Sources |
|---|---|---|
| US ratings | 216 ratings, 4.91 stars | App Store,11-06 |
| Launched | 2026-10-01, most of the time before end of October was invite-only | App Store / website |
| Canada | Rating 64→68, Productivity Top Free rank 51–113 | 10-28→11-06 |
| South Africa | Productivity Top Free #15–16, overall Top Free #11-06 at #197 | 11-06 (the South Africa store has a low bar; a few downloads can get you charted) |
| Growth | All stores outside the US combined added only 6 ratings in the last 7 days | 10-31→11-06 |

216 ratings, clearly first in this category. But after the October invite-only wave passed, growth has clearly slowed. Compared with the veteran Forest (49,592 ratings in the US store), it's not in the same league.

### Same product, different results: others got 0

This is the table that matters most. Below are "study time-lapse" or "Strava of studying" apps, most of which launched before Latent:

| Product | Launched | US rating (11-06) | vs. Latent |
|---|---|---|---|
| Pomolapse: Focus Timelapse | 2025-03 | 0 | Pomodoro timer + time-lapse, nearly the same concept |
| FocusLapse | 2025-12 | 8 | Same concept, Japanese developer |
| Workle | 2026-01 | 1 | Time-lapse + on-device AI to detect whether you got distracted |
| BeeProductive | 2026-03 | 0 | Time-lapse + growing a tree |
| Goldfish Focus | 2026-04 | 21 | The closest match: time-lapse + streaks + studying together, launched half a year earlier |
| LockLapse | 2026-08 | 0 | Generates a shareable card with the duration when you finish |
| Studva | 2026-08 | 2 | Also calls itself "The Strava of deep work" |
| Focus Labs | 2026-09 | 7 | Same concept |
| **Latent** | **2026-10** | **216** | |

The product differences are small. Latent is more polished, and its social features (friend feed, groups, competitions) are the most complete, but Goldfish and Studva say essentially the same thing. **Same thing, but in other people's hands it has single-digit ratings, while in his it has 5 per week 216** . The difference isn't features, it's distribution.

### Where users come from

Ranked from hardest to softest evidence:

1. **His own Instagram.** His profile bio reads "founder @trylatent." A US-store review (10-13): "genuinely i found ts app off of eddie's instagram and i'm actually addicted."

2. **"Comment 'Latent' for early access."** The IG Reel and TikTok captions both say "Comment 'Latent' for early access"; after you comment, an invite is sent automatically by DM. A line in the TikTok topic page summary says "The only thing he pays for is a $15/month ManyChat subscription" (I didn't read the original, only the summary).

3. **No product yet, just a video.** On LinkedIn he says that in 2026 7–August he posted a video presenting the idea as if it were a finished product. It got 1.3M views, 13k people joined the waitlist, and he then personally called 50 users one by one to walk them through setup. These are his own claims, and there's no way to verify them.

4. **Invite-code referrals + group competitions.** Users share trylatent.co/i/<code> to bring in friends. On TikTok, sock-puppet accounts with 2 followers (659 followers, 2,993 views on the video) carry the code. A 5-star review (10-26): "loved it so much that I have shared it with 13 of my friends. We now have friendly competitions with each other for who can get more done throughout the week!"

5. **"I dropped out of Harvard and built a time-lapse app" series.** Posted on IG, TikTok and LinkedIn at the same time. The TikTok one (10-11) got only about 11k views; the main battleground is IG.

6. **He's already a creator that big companies are willing to pay.** 2026-08-19 He posted a sponsored Grok video on TikTok (#spacexaipartner) that mentions "I've been building trylatent.co for the past six weeks." That video has 174M views but only 132k likes and 90 comments, basically xAI paying to push it. How many downloads it brought Latent is unclear, but it shows the resources he has access to.

7. **Possibly ran IG ads, and some say they bought reviews.** A 2-star review (10-26): "Many of these reviews are botted by them… misleading influencer marketing… The Insta add looked good tho." That's the only accusation and it's unverified. The US store rating of 4.91 with nearly all 5-star reviews is circumstantial evidence.

Almost nobody is discussing it on TikTok or X, and no media has covered it. For now it's something passed around among US high school and college study creators.

### Why users stick around

Two things keep coming up in the reviews. The first is staying away from the phone: "keeps me away from my phone," "Better Than Instagram. Get off social media. Lock in." The second is competing with friends: "makes me want to study and beat the people in my groups times," "Groups and friends are great and what I think sets this app apart from others."

The reviewers are concentrated: "junior in hs," "9 APs," "I study 4-7 hours practically every day now"—US high schoolers and college students, in other words Eddie's IG audience.

The negative reviews are concentrated too: still battery drain (4 stars, 11-02, suggesting a lower frame-rate option), invite-only gating people out (2 stars), and "Influencer slop" (1 stars, 10-25).

### If it were you

**The verdict:** you can learn a whole cold-start playbook from this, but building a study time-lapse app by copying it isn't worth it. The result comes from the founder himself, and the product alone has already shown over a dozen times that it doesn't take off.

**Who it suits:** someone who already has a vertical-audience account, even just 10-20k followers, where the followers are people who have to practice, study or track things every day. For example fitness, instrument practice, drawing, exam prep, language learning. People in these scenes already film time-lapses. It also suits someone who can find a presenter like this and split the revenue with them.

**Who it doesn't suit:** developers with no traffic of their own who plan to win through ASO or by "doing it better than Latent." In the table, Goldfish launched half a year earlier with nearly the same concept and has 21 ratings.

**How to do it:**

- Drop "study" and run the same model on another audience: film workouts at the gym, practice sessions in the music room, the process of drawing. The act of using the product produces videos that can be posted, and that's the most valuable part of this format;

- Post a video that "pretends the product already exists" to test demand, and let the waitlist count decide whether to build it;

- Comment keywords trigger an automatic DM with an invite code, turning short-video traffic straight into installs;

- Start invite-only with a few friend codes per person, and the product must have groups and a leaderboard. Retention comes from "not wanting to lose to your friends," not from features.

**How to get users:** you (or a creator you work with) appear on camera and tell a real story, then seed UGC with dozens of small accounts with a few hundred followers each. Latent's evidence shows the main channel was the presenter's own account; everything else was amplification.

**Is there a window:** not really. The habit of recording time-lapses has existed for 2021 years, and no platform loophole gave the opening. But Latent already holds the study-focused niche, so switching audiences has to happen before it expands outward. It is hiring for growth on LinkedIn, so it may expand into other categories soon.

**What would show this read is wrong:** if Latent goes public, drops the invite gate, and its US rating climbs to the thousands within a month or two, and a same-category app takes off without creator backing, that would mean the format itself has pull and copying the product could work. Conversely, if growth stalls once it starts charging a subscription, that suggests this playbook only brings in free users, and making money will need a different approach.

## Why Latent: Focus Timelapse (iOS id6788947658) got traction

> Research date 2026-11-06. Sources: Apple lookup / review RSS (same day), our appstore library (app_day, from 2026-10-28), Jina search and page text, TikHub (TikTok), x-radar, metaads library.

### One line

Latent is a "focus camera": you prop up your phone, record yourself studying or working, and it turns the session into a timelapse of about 10 seconds, tracking duration and streaks, with friends to compare progress (self-described "the Strava of studying"). The product itself is nearly identical to at least ten competitors; it took off because of **the founder's own 150k-follower Instagram study/productivity account + the real-person "Harvard dropout builds an app" story + invite-only and friend-code social referrals** , not a feature difference.

### 1. Data: how big it is now

- US store: 216 ratings, 4.91 stars (Apple lookup, 2026-11-06). The 114 on the data card is the total for all stores outside the US; Latent is not charting in the US, and our library has no daily US records.

- Other stores (appstore library, app_day): Canada 64→68 (10-28→11-06), Productivity free chart #51–113; Australia 31→32,155–203; South Africa 5→7, while its category chart climbed from 47 to #15–16,11-05 and overall free chart #200, and #11-06 at #197 (the South African bar is very low, a few downloads can chart).

- Growth: all stores combined added only 7 ratings in nearly 6 days. The US went from launch (10-01) to 216 ratings in about 5 weeks, mostly during the October invite-only period. It looks like a cold-start wave that has clearly slowed down now.

- Revenue: the official FAQ says "Latent is free"; the App Store shows it as free, with no in-app purchase price list; no store has charted in Top Grossing. The data card says the privacy policy mentions a subscription; I did not verify this.

### 2. Competitors: who else does the same thing

"Recording a timelapse forces you not to touch your phone" has been a study tip circulating on TikTok for a long time (for example, thekunallifestyle's "my #1 study hack: study time lapses" from 2021 years ago, in TikHub search results), and the iPhone camera's built-in timelapse can already do it. So this niche is crowded with indie developers:

| Product | Platform | Launched | Scale (US rating count, 2026-11-06 lookup) | How Latent differs |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| The iPhone camera's built-in time-lapse mode | Big-company features | Already around | Everyone has it | Drains battery, fills the camera roll, no stats or social; Latent's pitch is exactly "battery-saving, doesn't fill your camera roll, timing, social" |
| Forest | iOS/Android | 2014-05 | 49,592 | Tree gamification, no camera; Latent creates a sense of supervision by "being filmed" |
| YPT(Yeolpumta) | iOS/Android | Years ago | Heavily used by Korean students (specific number unverified) | Study timer + group leaderboard, no timelapse video |
| Pomolapse: Focus Timelapse | iOS | 2025-03 | 0 | Pomodoro + timelapse, nearly the same concept, no social distribution |
| FocusLapse - Study Time Lapse | iOS | 2025-12 | 8 | Same concept, Japanese developer |
| Workle | iOS | 2026-01 | 1 | Timelapse + on-device AI distraction analysis |
| BeeProductive: TimeLapse Focus | iOS/Android | 2026-03 | 0 | Timelapse + plant gamification |
| Goldfish Focus | iOS | 2026-04 | 21 | The closest one: study timelapse + streaks + "study with people who get you", launched half a year earlier; IG has "best apps for study timelapse" recommendations |
| LockLapse | iOS | 2026-08 | 0 | After a timelapse, outputs a share card with duration and streak |
| Studva | iOS/Android | 2026-08 | 2 | Also calls itself "The Strava of deep work", timer + leaderboard, no timelapse |
| Focus Labs: Study Timelapse | iOS | 2026-09 | 7 | Same concept |
| Proofie: Study Timelapse Cam | iOS | 2026-10-07 | 0 | Launched after Latent; timelapse with timestamp templates |
| Welockin | iOS | 2026-10-19 | 0 | Launched after Latent; friends time sessions together |

Takeaway: **at least 7 or 8 nearly identical products existed in this category before Latent, and none of them took off** (US ratings are single digits to the low twenties). Latent, at 5 weeks and 216 ratings, is clearly first in this pack, but it is not in the same league as an incumbent like Forest.

### 3. Growth tactics: where users came from (with evidence)

1. **The founder's own Instagram account (main channel, solid evidence)** . Eddie Lou, a Harvard psychology sophomore (LinkedIn says 2024–2028), IG @eddie_the_lou with 151k followers, bio "founder @trylatent"; grew to 100k followers from 2025 to 5 with productivity and mindset content (his own LinkedIn timeline). An App Store reviewer says it outright: "i found ts app off of eddie's instagram" (US, 2026-10-13).

2. **"Post the video before the product exists" to test demand** . According to the founder's LinkedIn post: in 2026 from 7 to August he posted a video that pitched the idea as if it were a finished product; **1.3M views, 13k people joined the waitlist** ; he then manually called 50 users and helped them get set up. (Only his own account; not verified.)

3. **The "comment latent for early access" auto-DM funnel** . IG Reels (DeigQBPvGUm, DepVEF8vkZO) and TikTok captions all say "Comment 'Latent' for early access / DM me 'Latent'". A TikTok discover summary reads "The only thing he pays for is a $15/month ManyChat subscription"; I did not find the original line, so this is partially verified.

4. **Invite-only + friend-code referrals** . It was invite-only through October, and users share trylatent.co/i/<code> to bring in friends (captions on TikTok users ramithu007 and char2med contain it). Comments: "shared it with 13 of my friends... friendly competitions" (10-26), "How do I get the code if I don't know any friends?" (10-18,2 stars). 10-18 was supposed to launch publicly; the founder posted "we grew 8x in a week, too fast, delaying launch to hire first", which is itself a scarcity marketing move (LinkedIn 280+ engagements).

5. **The Harvard-dropout story series** . Reels/TikToks like "I left harvard to build a timelapse app" and "I told my parents I was dropping out of Harvard the night before move-in", while recruiting engineers and growth people on LinkedIn. The TikTok post from 10-11 only reached about 11k views; the main battleground is IG.

6. **xAI / Grok sponsorship (key finding)** . 2026-08-19 His TikTok posted a Grok collaboration video (#spacexaipartner #grokbot, "I've been building trylatent.co for the past six weeks… GrokBot can work as different employees"), **174M views, but only 132k likes and 90 comments** ; the API shows adv_promotable=True, ad_source=1 (TikHub, 2026-11-06). A gap this big between views and engagement suggests largely paid ad reach from xAI. trylatent.co is named in it, but the call to action drives traffic to Grok, so how much it sent to Latent is unclear. What it really shows is that the founder is an influencer big companies will pay to work with, which makes him an asset in himself.

7. **Micro-influencer / UGC recommendations, organic or semi-organic** . On TikTok: char2med (659 followers, 2,993 views, with an invite code), chantel_._.8 ("not sponsored", 809 views), woaaeli (9-02, during the beta), and others, all small accounts with hundreds to thousands of views; there is also an account called latentglazer with only 1 followers that looks like the team's own account (unverified).

8. **Possibly ran Instagram ads, with suspected review botting (weak evidence)** . A 2-star review (10-26) says: "Many of these reviews are botted by them… misleading influencer marketing… The Insta add looked good tho". Our metaads library finds no ads from the trylatent advertiser, but that library only tracks advertisers surfaced by keyword search, so not finding them doesn't mean they didn't advertise. The US 4.91 rating, nearly all 5-star, is only a possibility, unverified.

9. X / media: x-radar found trylatent, latent timelapse, and eddie_the_lou each with 90 posts in the last 0 days; no media coverage found.

### IV. Why users stay

- It hits a very specific scene: students already record timelapses to stop touching their phones, and Latent fixes three pain points: **battery drain** (it dims the screen while recording; the site says it saves about half the battery), **filling the camera roll** (stored in the cloud), and **cheating** (everything stops when you leave the app). Comments repeatedly say "keeps me away from my phone" and "saves battery".

- Social is the core of retention: friend feeds, groups, competitions over who studies the most, and nudges. Direct comments: "Groups and friends are great and what I think sets this app apart", "makes me want to study and beat the people in my groups times".

- Free, with no barrier to getting started.

- Negatives: still drains battery (4 stars, 11-02), invite-only puts people off (2 stars), "Influencer slop" (1 stars).

### 5. What the differentiation is, and whether it explains the breakout

- The product differences are small: power-saving dimming, pausing when you leave the app, cloud storage, friend and group activity feeds. A bit more polish than Goldfish, LockLapse, or Studva. The social plus timelapse combo (the Strava model) is the most complete of them, but Studva and Goldfish are already saying the same things.

- **The real edge is distribution** : a student productivity creator with 150k followers who is himself the target user, the "top student" idol. Add the Harvard + dropout + San Francisco + funded-founder story, a "comment to get beta access" funnel, scarcity built on invites, and friend-code virality. The same product got 0 ratings in someone else's hands. In his, it got 5 weeks and 216 ratings.

- So: differentiation isn't the main reason it took off. The founder's built-in audience and narrative are. The product's social nature (timelapse videos are made for sharing, and friends compete with each other) amplifies the virality on top of that.

### 6. How many people have seen it

- Revenue isn't public (the product is free). It doesn't show up on TrustMRR or similar platforms. No press coverage, no discussion on X.

- Exposure is concentrated on the founder's own IG (150k followers), LinkedIn (1k followers, posts with 280+ engagements), and a circle of small TikTok accounts. Call it "chatter in a small circle," though it has real reach among US high school and college study creators.

- Copycats: the category is already crowded and most rivals came earlier. Later entrants include Proofie (10-07) and Welockin (10-19). Unverified whether they copied it after seeing it.

### VII. What others can borrow

1. Build the audience first, then the app: spend a year growing a content account to 100k followers. The account's audience becomes the app's users.

2. Test demand with one video that pitches the idea as if it's a finished product, and let the waitlist count decide whether to build it.

3. Comment keyword → automatic DM with an invite (ManyChat, about $10–20 a month), turning short-video traffic straight into installs.

4. Invite-only + friend codes + group competitions: scarcity drives acquisition, social drives retention. "Growing too fast, delaying launch" is itself a good piece of content.

5. Pick a format where using the product itself produces shareable content: timelapse videos and share cards get passed around by users on their own.

6. The playbook transfers to fitness, music practice, drawing, exam prep, and language learning (people are already recording timelapses for these), or to smaller language markets. But it needs an on-camera person who is already an idol to the target user. Copying the product alone won't work. Data from a dozen similar apps shows that.

### VIII. Unknowns

- The 13k waitlist and "8x in a week" figures are the founder's own claims. Exact numbers unverified.

- Whether he ran IG ads or bought comments is unknown. The only evidence is one user's accusation in a comment.

- The claim that ManyChat costs $15 a month comes only from a search snippet.

- Which accelerator it was and the $250k terms are unclear. Co-founder Malcolm's background is unverified.
