"Find content that's already hot, then put your app in it": a French growth marketer's chat toxicity checker app
What it is A French-language app: upload a chat screenshot and get a toxicity score and red flags, then three tones (calm, firm, harsh) of a reply you can send right away. Paywalled, no free use.
Why it caught on On French TikTok, "feed a chat screenshot to AI and rate how toxic it is" videos were already pushed by a rival's sock-puppet network. The developer is a professional growth marketer who rode that content with a French-native version that replies for you, with localized store copy and a weekly hard paywall. A couple hundred ratings were enough to chart on the French Lifestyle Top Grossing list.
B55How you could follow it Don't copy the app, copy the pipeline: find a language where no one has seriously built an English product, spot a TikTok content format that's already getting ad spend, ship an app over a weekend that produces the same result page, run a sock-puppet account network plus automated posting, use a hard weekly paywall, and run several at once.

Toxik AI is a French app: drop in a chat screenshot and it gives you a 0–100 toxicity score, a few red flags, and a comeback you can send straight away. The features aren't new; the English market had this over a year ago, and the French market has rivals three times its size. It got onto the French Lifestyle Top Grossing chart six weeks after launch because its maker is a growth professional who had already written the playbook up on LinkedIn. Below: what it is, where the traffic comes from, where the money comes from, who's competing, and what you can take away.
One LinkedIn post
On 2026 Jul 8, Paul Soubigou posted on LinkedIn, opening with: "If you build an app first and think about distribution later, you're already behind." He went on: "Most people build an app and then pray it spreads. I flip it: find what's already spreading, then build the app into it." He said he found a "clearly already hot TikTok content format," built a Gen Z app over a weekend in 2 hours, repeatedly tested onboarding and pricing until it converted, then automated the content so that "posting now takes 5 minutes a day." Result: over $1,000 in a month, #88 on the French App Store Lifestyle chart, "100% organic, ad spend 0."
Going by timing and description, that app was likely Doro, an dating reply coach he released in April (inferred). Two and a half months later, Sep 24, he shipped Toxik.
Who Paul is: his personal site says he was growth at Rocapine (a consumer app studio that raised a $13M Series A), ran two UGC creator programs totaling 50M organic views, operated a French Instagram network of 2.5M followers over 2021–2024 years, and built an AI tool for batch-generating app short videos. He lists a dozen-plus apps under his own name, writing "my apps combined bring in $5,000 a month, peaking at $2,000 in a week." That's the total across all apps, not Toxik alone.
What it is
The first line of the store page is: "On te manque de respect ? Envoie le screen." (Someone's disrespecting you? Send the screenshot.) The flow has four steps:
- Upload a chat screenshot, or paste in the messages you received;
- Get results in seconds: a toxicity score of 0–100, identified red flags (guilt-tripping, gaslighting, hot-and-cold, controlling behavior, playing the victim), a one-line verdict, and "who's driving the conversation";
- Pick a tone and length. Three tones: Chill (calmly set the record straight), Énervé (firm, telling them enough), Méchant ("cash, tu fermes la conversation": direct, ends the chat); three lengths: one line, a few lines, a big paragraph;
- Tap to copy and paste it back into WhatsApp, Instagram, Snapchat, Tinder, or Hinge.
No sign-up required; the store page says screenshots are "not saved." There's also a "talk to Toxik" venting mode. It uses "tu" throughout, giving it a young French voice.
Free to download, but the store page says "all features require a paid subscription": weekly €7.99, monthly €14.99, yearly €29.99 or €59.99 (French App Store, 11-06). Among the few French written reviews, one is an all-caps "PAYANT!" complaining there's not even a free tier.
How big it is now
| Metric | Metric | Sources |
|---|---|---|
| Global rating count | 10-28's 158 → 11-06's 270, +102 over the last ~7 days, 9–21 ratings per day | App Store, 10-28 to 11-06 |
| French ratings | 107 → 205; French page 210 ratings, 4.6 stars | French App Store |
| French Lifestyle chart | Ranked #98–129 on the free chart in late October; entered the Top Grossing chart from 11-01, #84–143 (peaking at #11-03, 84) | French App Store chart rankings |
| Francophone Africa | 53 ratings in Senegal, Lifestyle free chart #32–61; #15 in Mali, #17 in Madagascar, #32 in Niger | App Store,11-06 |
| US store | 19 ratings | US App Store |
| Revenue | Not publicly disclosed | — |
A couple hundred ratings was enough to chart on the French Lifestyle Top Grossing list. One reason is that the bar for that chart isn't high; the other is the hard paywall plus weekly billing, so each paying user brings in more money (inferred). Lots of ratings with almost no written reviews usually means the app prompted for a rating (inferred, not verified).
Where the users come from: the content format was grown by someone else
We couldn't find Toxik's own TikTok account. But the traffic it's tapping into is easy to find: under #relationtoxique on French TikTok, everything is sock-puppet accounts like "xxx_privateaccount," each video feeding a chat screenshot to AI to judge how toxic the other person is.
For example, @shana_privateaccount's bio reads "ambassadrice the cringe" (The Cringe ambassador). From Oct 27 to Nov 4 she posted almost daily, with captions that are one exclamation each ("alors là je suis choquée" (I'm shocked), "mais pq personne m'en a parlé avant ??" (why didn't anyone tell me before??)), plus the same hashtag string, ending with "publicité*" tags. Her Nov 2 post "c'est chaud franchement on voit tout !!" (honestly brutal, you can see everything!!) got 90k views, while most others sat between a few thousand and twenty thousand. Another account, @douae_privateacco, used Moroccan Arabic catchphrases for the same content, peaking around 12k on a single post.
In other words, the "screenshot toxicity check" format had already been pushed and validated on a sock-puppet network by The Cringe before Toxik launched. What Paul did is exactly what his post describes: find what's already spreading, then build the app into it. Which accounts he used, or whether he drew on his studio's creator resources, isn't visible from outside.
Three side threads:
- Store copy in 44 languages. The French title is "Détecte & Réponds" (detect and reply), the US title switches to "Toxicity Checker," with keywords swapped per store. He describes himself as doing "up to 50 languages of ASO."
- Spillover into Francophone Africa. Senegal, Mali, Niger, and Madagascar all charted, and in these stores a few ratings can get you onto the Lifestyle free chart, a natural spillover from French content and French store copy (inferred).
- Paid ads: no evidence found. He publicly emphasizes organic traffic, but since paid acquisition is his day job, it can't be ruled out.
Why this result page works
"Is it me, or is he manipulating me?" has been a recurring emotional topic on French TikTok. Toxik's result page is built to be filmed: one big number (like 87/100), a row of red flags, and one harsh line. A screen recording is already a video, and users share it themselves.
Its difference from rivals is putting two things on one screen: The Cringe leans toward "get a chat report," the English-market Toxic AI toward "help me write a reply," while Toxik judges toxicity first and then replies in three tones. But honestly, that's not why it took off: pasting the screenshot into ChatGPT does the same thing. The real reason is distribution: pick a content format that's already hot, pick a language market English-first products have ignored, then use automation to pile on the content volume.
Who it's competing with
| Product | Scale | Toxik vs. the rest |
|---|---|---|
| The Cringe: Chat Wrapped(2026-05) | 707 ratings in France; German 389, Brazil 494, Italy 273, Spain 229 (App Store, 11-06) | The most direct French rival, an entertainment-first "chat year-in-review" leaning on a creator-ambassador sock-puppet network, already spread across several languages |
| Toxic AI: Text Respond AI(2024-12) | US 745, French 74 ratings | English-market pioneer with nearly identical features; the official TikTok account posts daily, but it isn't French-native |
| RealTalk - Chat Analyzer(2025-11) | US 462 ratings, French 0 | English chat analysis |
| Flagz, Red Flag: Cringe Analyse Chat, The Ick, and others | Single digits to dozens of ratings | A batch of similar multi-language localization packs in the second half of 2026, with almost no distribution work |
| Web tools (ToxicDetector, cringechat, etc.) | Not verified | Upload a WhatsApp export or screenshot |
| ChatGPT / Claude with a pasted screenshot | Huge | Free and does everything; Toxik sells a fixed format and a result page built to be filmed |
| Paul's own Doro (2026-04) | 163 ratings on the French store, already stalled | The previous app built on the same playbook |
This category is crowded and not new. Toxik isn't the first, and it isn't the biggest. Almost nobody outside is paying attention to it: no press coverage, no discussion on X, and the developer only posted the combined revenue of their portfolio.
If it were you
One-line verdict: you can follow this, but don't copy this app, copy this person's pipeline. Find a TikTok content format where someone is already running ads and the view counts are steady, build an app in one weekend that produces the same result page, pick a language the English-language products haven't seriously worked, use a hard paywall with weekly subscriptions, and bet on several apps at once.
Who it suits: 1–2 people who can build a single-feature app with SwiftUI plus a large-model API in a few days, who can read TikTok in a non-English market, manage a batch of alt accounts, and automate posting. Ideally a native speaker of that language.
Who it doesn't suit: anyone hoping to win on features (free ChatGPT can do it); anyone who wants to build one app and expect it to earn long-term (Doro's rating has stalled around 160, and apps like this are mostly one-wave); anyone who doesn't want to make content and is just waiting for organic store traffic; anyone who cares about the reputation and review risk of "teaching people how to clap back."
How to do it:
- Pick a content format, not a feature. Search emotional topic hashtags in the target language on TikTok (romance, workplace, family, appearance ratings), and look for formats tagged "publicité" or "ad", posted daily from one account, with single posts that consistently hit tens of thousands of views. Someone is paying for it, which means there's downstream conversion.
- Design the result page to be "shootable": one big number, a set of tags, and one line people can copy directly.
- Don't go head-to-head with The Cringe on language: it already has two or three hundred to five hundred ratings each in German, Portuguese, Italian, and Spanish. Better gaps are languages where no one has seriously done the same format (Arabic dialects, Turkish, Indonesian, etc.; similar Arabic-language videos on TikTok have hit 60–700k views per post), or switch to a different emotional topic and skip "toxicity judging."
- Monetize like Toxik: free download, hard paywall, mainly weekly subscriptions; store copy in dozens of languages, with headline keywords adjusted per store.
How to get users: run 5–10 alt accounts, each with its own persona, using the same copy formula (an exclamation + screenshot + result-page screen recording) and the same hashtag set, one post per account per day; turn content production into a template so daily upkeep takes about ten-odd minutes. After two weeks, keep the accounts and scripts that got past 10,000 views and cut the rest. French content like this can also pick up the French-speaking Africa charts on the side; check other languages for similar "adjacent markets."
Timing: how long an app like this lives depends on how long a content format stays hot, usually a few months. From the moment you spot a format catching fire to your launch, ideally no more than two or three weeks; if a language already has two or three similar apps with a hundred-plus ratings each, move on to the next format.
What would mean you read it wrong:
- Toxik's daily new ratings in France fall to single digits by late November and it drops out of the Lifestyle Top Grossing chart, which shows that even the people who do distribution only ride one wave, so budget for "one or two months at a time";
- The Cringe or Toxic AI rolls its alt-account matrix out into the language you picked, and the gap is gone;
- You post on one format for three weeks with not a single post past 10,000 views: you picked the wrong format, so switch formats, don't change the product.

One line
A French-language app that checks chat screenshots for toxicity and writes the comeback. Upload a screenshot and get a toxicity score of 0–100, red flags, and a one-line verdict. Then pick one of three tones (Chill / Énervé / Méchant) and three lengths to generate a reply you can send as-is. The developer, Paul Soubigou, is growth lead at Rocapine (a consumer app studio that raised a $13M Series A) and also ships small apps in batches. It works mainly because he's good at distribution (find a content format already performing on TikTok, build the app around it, automate content production), not because the product has a unique feature.

- Senegal: rating count 38 → 53, Lifestyle Top Free #32–61. Mali (#15), Niger (#32) and Madagascar (#17) are also on the Lifestyle Top Free chart. All French-speaking African markets, where the bar to chart is low (library app_profile, 11-06).
- The US store has only 19 ratings (Apple lookup, us), so this is still essentially a French-market product.
- Lots of ratings, almost no written reviews (the French store page shows only "Cool / Nickel" and one "PAYANT! Not even a free version"). Many ratings with few reviews usually means the app prompted for a rating. This is an inference, not verified.
2. Competitors
| Product | Where | Launched | Scale | How it differs from Toxik |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| The Cringe: Chat Wrapped(VASTE COMPANY LLC) | iOS | 2026-05-08 | 703 ratings in the French store (Apple search, fr) | The most direct French rival, positioned as a "chat annual report / analysis" with an entertainment bent. | Toxic AI: Text Respond AI(Kai Frohner) | iOS / Android / web at toxicai.app | 2024-12-05 | US 745, French 74 ratings | The English-market pioneer. TikTok @toxicaiapp posts daily (1k–48k views per video). Nearly the same features (relationship reply generation), but not native French. |

| ChatGPT / Claude with a pasted screenshot | Big-company features | — | Huge | Free and does everything; what Toxik sells is the fixed "one-tap score + three tones" format, plus a result screen built to be filmed as a short video |
| The same developer's Doro: Coach Séduction IA | iOS | 2026-04-03 | 161 ratings in the French store, stalled | The same playbook's previous app (a dating-reply coach) |
Bottom line: the category is crowded and not new. In the English market, Toxic AI and RealTalk launched over a year earlier. In French, The Cringe launched more than 4 months before it, with more than 3 times its volume. Toxik isn't the first, and it isn't the biggest.
3. Growth tactics
- "Find the content format first, then build the app" on TikTok (self-described by the developer, confirmed as his playbook; no Toxik-specific account found). Paul wrote on LinkedIn in 2026 July about his previous app (by timing and description, Doro): "Find an obviously trending TikTok content format, build a Gen Z app in a weekend, 2 hours ... automate content production so posting takes just 5 minutes a day ... hit $1000 in its first month, #88 in the French Lifestyle chart, 100% organic traffic, 0 ads". He also says he'll use TokPortal to post as a US-disguised account to go after the US market. His personal site says he built AppTide (an AI platform that mass-produces app short videos), set up KISS (an automated creative platform) at Rocapine, ran two UGC creator programs, accumulated 50M organic views, and ran a French Instagram network of 2.5M followers over 2021–2024 years.
- The content format itself is hot on French TikTok (confirmed): under "#relationtoxique #toxicrelationshipcheck" are "xxx_privateaccount"-style burner accounts posting chat screenshots judged toxic by AI, tagged publicité*, with 1k–89k views per video (e.g. @shana_privateaccount, bio "ambassadrice the cringe", 10-27 ~ 11-04, almost daily; @douae_privateacco, peak 12k views per video). Similar Arabic-language videos reach 60–700k views each. By the time Toxik launched, The Cringe and others had already validated this format.
- French-speaking Africa spillover (inferred): Senegal, Mali, Niger and Madagascar all appear on the charts, consistent with natural spillover from French TikTok content plus French store copy. The Lifestyle chart bar is low in these markets, so a few ratings can get you on it.
- ASO: store copy localized into 44 languages (lookup languageCodesISO2A; he claims "ASO in up to 50 languages"). French store title "Détecte & Réponds", US store title "Toxicity Checker", keywords swapped by store.
- Paid ads: no evidence found. He publicly stresses organic traffic for his apps, but his core job is ad buying, so paid spend can't be ruled out.
- Rating prompts (inferred): many ratings, almost no written reviews.
4. Why it took off
- Demand is ready-made: "Is he gaslighting me / is it my fault" is a long-running emotional theme on French TikTok, and screenshots are ready-made footage for video.
- The result screen is naturally filmable: "toxicity 87/100 + red flags + one savage line" turns into a video users repost themselves.
- The developer is good at distribution: he has said he finds a trending content format and then builds the app, with content production automated. His personal site lists his apps' combined figures: "$5000 a month, $2000 a week, 10k monthly downloads, top 100 in the French store for two months running". These are numbers for the whole portfolio, not Toxik alone.
- Direct monetization: hard paywall, weekly €7.99. It reaches the French Lifestyle Top Grossing chart at #84–143 with only a couple hundred ratings, suggesting users pay meaningfully (inferred).
- Low barrier: a solo developer can build it in a few hours with SwiftUI plus an LLM API. His approach is cheap, many-shots testing: push whichever one takes off (his site lists 13+ apps).
5. Differentiation
- Native French with a Gen Z voice ("tu", "Méchant : cash, tu fermes la conversation"), which feels more natural in French search and content than translated English apps.
- "Check + write the comeback" is one flow, with three tones × three lengths. The Cringe leans toward "read the report", Toxic AI toward "generate a reply", and Toxik puts both on one screen.
- No account signup, and screenshots aren't kept, which lowers the psychological barrier.
- None of these is the main reason it worked. Any team can build the features, and ChatGPT can too. The real drivers are distribution (content format + automated production + multilingual ASO) and picking French, a market with less competition. Differentiation just makes it feel smoother than English competitors in French.
6. Visibility
Small circles are talking: the developer has shown portfolio income on his personal site and LinkedIn (5000 a month, Doro $1000 in its first month), but the numbers are small. It isn't on TrustMRR, no media coverage found, and searching X for "toxik" returns 0 results. Similar products like The Cringe are already running creator networks in France, so plenty of people are competing on distribution in this category.
7. What to borrow
- "Find the content format first, then build the app": on TikTok, find a format that advertisers already use and that gets high views, then build an app that produces the same kind of screenshot result.
- Design the result screen to be filmable: one number score + a red-flag list + one line you can copy and say.
- Pick non-English, low-barrier markets (France + French-speaking Africa), roll out with multilingual ASO, and use a hard paywall with a weekly plan.
- One person runs several apps at once and pushes whichever takes off (Doro → Toxik → Same Place).
8. Uncertain
- Which TikTok / Instagram accounts Toxik used for distribution wasn't found (TikHub searches for toxik / toxikai show no clear match). It may be an unbranded burner network, or it may have used Rocapine's UGC resources.
- Whether it used paid acquisition wasn't verified (our ad library only tracks products on its watchlist).
- The developer hasn't published revenue for this app on its own; the personal site's numbers are for the whole portfolio.
- How long the growth lasts: Doro's ratings stalled around 160, so Toxik may also be a one-wave hit.
- The all-store competitor query in the library didn't finish due to a server timeout, so competitor scale uses Apple lookup / search numbers.
