> Big-brand fishing apps don't make content for Greece, and local apps only have logs. This one filled the gap with free EU ocean data plus an LLM. Every day, 1–2 Greek-language TikToks steadily pull views in a small niche. Greece's Sports Top Grossing chart has a low bar, and a few subscriptions were enough to reach top 10.

# A Greek-sea fishing app built by one person: free EU data, two TikToks a day, and within 9 ratings it was in the Top 10

**What it is** A sea-fishing app just for Greeks: it tells you which sea, when, and which bait is most likely to bring fish, lets you ask an AI captain, and keeps a catch log. Premium features are subscription-only.

**Why it's taking off** Big-name fishing apps don't make Greek-specific content, and local apps only offer logs. It fills the gap with free EU ocean data plus a large language model, and 1–2 Greek-language TikToks a day reliably get views in a small community. Greece's Sports Top Grossing chart is low-barrier, so a few subscriptions got it into the Top 10.

**B** **How you could follow it** Don't copy it in Greece. Apply the same playbook to Turkey, Croatia, or Italy, Mediterranean countries with no localized fishing tools yet. Post native-language short videos daily and put the core forecasts entirely behind the paywall.

Grade B: the playbook is cheap and clear, almost nobody has noticed it, and one person can copy it to other countries. But each country is small. Its own revenue is estimated at a few hundred to a few thousand euros a month, and its chart ranking carries little weight, so it only pays off if you run several countries. Barely known

Pelagos Fishing is a sea-fishing helper that speaks only Greek and covers only Greek waters: sea-state and fishing forecasts, depth-contour and seabed maps, a catch log, plus a chat assistant called "AI Captain" that runs on a subscription. It launched in 2026 Sep 18, and by early November the iOS app had only 9 ratings, yet it sat between #4 and #13 on the Greece Sports Top Grossing chart the whole time. On Android it has 5,000+ installs. None of the features are new. What's new is "Greece only." The chart looks hot, but it's been discounted, and the part worth copying is the playbook: pick another country and do the same thing.

### Two days before launch, 4 videos in one day

Sep 16, 2026: the iOS version was still two days from launch, and TikTok account @pelagos_fishing had already posted 4 Greek-language fishing clips in one day, each pulling 11k to 21k views with a dozen or two comments apiece. Before the app even shipped, the first crowd was already waiting for it.

The site's About page tells the origin story:

> Το Pelagos δεν ξεκίνησε σε μια αίθουσα συσκέψεων. Ξεκίνησε σε μια βάρκα, πριν ξημερώσει, όταν αναρωτηθήκαμε γιατί καμία εφαρμογή δεν καταλάβαινε πραγματικά τη δική μας θάλασσα.

(Pelagos didn't start in a meeting room. It started on a boat before dawn, when we asked: why doesn't any app really understand our own sea?)

It continues: "We spent countless hours fighting foreign generic apps that know nothing about our fishing spots, currents, and weather." The site calls itself "a small team with no investors"; the developer on the store is Nikolaos Andreadis, an individual in Thessaloniki whose only app is this one.

### What it is

Open it and you get a map of Greece divided by sea area: Aegean, Ionian, Cretan, Thermaic Gulf, Thracian Sea. There are seven feature blocks: fishing forecasts (scoring each spot by season, sea state, and seabed type), seabed substrate, depth contours, gear recommendations, weather and sea state, AI Captain, and catch log. The log is intentionally manual, and AI Captain reads your records to spot patterns. The target users are the most common Greek shore and boat styles (LRF, spinning).

| | Free | Pelagos Pro |
|---|---|---|
| Weather and sea state forecasts | 2 days | Longer (the site doesn't specify the number of days) |
| AI Captain | 3 messages a day | Any |
| Regional fishing forecasts | — | ✓ |
| Pricing | — | €9.99 / €24.99 / €49.99 (inferred from the site's ordering as monthly / quarterly / yearly); monthly trial 3 days, quarterly and yearly trials 7 days |

The most-wanted part, "where and when to catch fish," sits behind the paywall. The free tier caps the AI by message count, and the trial is short. The path from download to payment is short.

Its "professional" feel cost almost nothing. The privacy page on the official site lists the data sources: Apple WeatherKit, the EU's Copernicus Marine (sea state), EMODnet (bathymetry), and Mapbox for maps. Tides are computed on the phone with the academic TPXO model, and subscriptions run on RevenueCat. This data covers the whole Mediterranean and is mostly free. Add an LLM as the "captain," and one person can stitch together something that looks like Navionics, Windy and Fishbrain combined.

### What users say

All 9 ratings on iOS are 5 stars. The few reviews I could read say "accurate" and "saves effort":

- "I've tried lots of forecast apps and sites, and checked them against the spots I fish most. The weather is accurate. The feature that scores fish by season, sea state and seabed is especially clever." (Greece store, 10-19)

- "I originally downloaded it to fish with friends, just for fun, and it helped a lot: where to go, what bait to use, what time the fish bite." (Greece store, 10-16)

- "It took our fishing up a notch. The information and maps are great." (Greece store, 10-20)

Too few reviews to say anything about retention from the rating. The Oct 30 1.0.8 release note reads only "added native rating prompt," which suggests the developer knows the review count is too low.

### Where users come from: almost entirely TikTok

Only one main channel is visible.

1. **1–2 TikToks a day.** Since launch, the account has posted almost daily, all using one caption template: "#psarema #fishinggreece #fishingtiktoks #fishing Download now via the link in bio" (psarema is the Greek word for "fishing"). By 11-06,60 videos it had 1,068 followers and 5,539 total likes (TikTok profile). Most videos get one to seven thousand views, with occasional spikes: 10-29, 40,770,10-19, 24,321,11-03, 16,300. Together that's roughly 400k views. Videos from late September linked the Android and iOS download short links directly; from October on, they pointed viewers to the official site instead.

2. **Giveaway.** 11-02 posted "PELAGOS MEGA GIVEAWAY": follow the account, leave a comment, and win 5 prizes of 3 months of Pro each. That post got 24 comments, where regular videos get zero to three. A follow-up the next day encouraging entry got 6,329 views.

3. **Facebook and Instagram, very small.** A newly created Facebook page posted the launch video, and Instagram has 435 followers. A separate Facebook account with the same surname (about 2,600 followers, normally posting geology content) has repeatedly shared the download link since Sep 23, which looks like family or friends helping out (the relationship is unverified).

4. **No sign of paid acquisition, no press coverage, zero mentions on X in 60 days.** Not finding paid acquisition doesn't mean there wasn't any.

The Greek fishing TikTok scene is small and content is thin, so one account posting daily can reliably get a few thousand views. The 5,000 Android installs probably came mostly this way (inference).

### What the Top Grossing #8 is worth

On the Greece iOS Sports Top Grossing chart, it held between #10-28 and #11-06 from 4 to 13,11-06, peaking at #8. On Top Free, it hit #6 to #17,10-31, and once reached #207 on the Greece overall Top Free chart. It has charted only in Greece.

But look at what ranks ahead of 11-06: F1 TV, NBA, Tennis TV, Sofascore, Formula 1, The Surfr, UFC. Almost all of them are sports streaming. Greece has few iOS users to begin with, and apart from streaming there are almost no paid apps in the Sports category, so it lands at #8, probably only a few €9.99 to €49.99 subscriptions a day. Only 9 ratings are holding it on the chart, which means people really are paying; but the scale is probably a few hundred to a few thousand euros a month, not more (estimate). This ranking proves demand exists. It doesn't prove the size.

### Who it's competing with

This category doesn't lack products. It lacks ones made for Greeks.

| Product | Scale in Greece (around 11-06) | Compared with Pelagos |
|---|---|---|
| Fishing Points (Slovenia, 2017) | 419 ratings on iOS, Sports Top Grossing #52; 2,212 ratings in the Spain store | A global fishing-spot and tide tool with a Greek UI, but not tuned to Greek waters, with no AI |
| Fishbrain(2012) | Claims 20M users worldwide; only 5 ratings in the Greece store | Community and datasets centered on North America and Northern Europe |
| Navionics(Garmin) | Greece Navigation Top Grossing #1 | Expensive nautical charts for people who drive boats; no fishing forecasts |
| Windy.com / Windy.app | Greece Weather Top Free #1 / #4, rated 8,608 / 2,666 | The standard wind-and-waves app for Greek anglers; no forecast scoring or logbook |
| 2Hook (Greek local, 2024-02) | 21 ratings, Sports Top Grossing #24 | Catch-logging only; no sea state, bathymetry or AI |
| Powerful Fishing Map (Greek developer, 2026-08-26) | 4 ratings, Sports Top Free #65 | Launched three weeks before Pelagos, with fishing spots, shipwrecks and statistical bite forecasts. Almost the same direction, just with far less noise |
| Spearo(2026-07) | 11 ratings, Weather Top Grossing #9 | Spearfishing forecasts only, the same small Mediterranean niche |

Before it, Greek anglers switched back and forth between Windy, Navionics, free bathymetry web pages and their own notebooks. Pelagos combines these into one Greek-language app, and that is its entire differentiation. The moat is shallow: Powerful Fishing Map shows that someone else in the same city thought of the same thing at the same time.

### If it were you

**B: worth a try. The play is cheap and under the radar, but every country is small, so the revenue ceiling is low.** Copying the Greek play now is late, since two local apps are already competing for one small pool. What can work is moving the formula "small country × hobby niche × native language × free EU ocean data × LLM assistant" to other Mediterranean countries. Almost nobody knows this approach yet, and the technical cost of porting it is close to zero. The weakness: even if it works, each country might only bring a few hundred to a few thousand euros a month, so you'd need to stack several countries.

**Who it suits** : one or two people, who fish themselves or have a fishing circle around them; a native speaker of, or fluent in, Italian, Croatian, Turkish, Portuguese or Spanish; comfortable with maps and data pipelines (NetCDF, raster tiles), and willing to shoot and edit short videos every day.

**Who it doesn't suit** : anyone aiming for English or a global audience (that's Fishbrain and Fishing Points' home turf); anyone expecting a single country to reach €10K+ a month; anyone who doesn't speak the local language and can't operate in the local fishing community.

**How to do it** : pick a country with lots of anglers and an empty local-language tool market. Turkey (balık avı) and Croatia are worth checking first. Italy (pesca) has a big market, but you need to confirm first whether local equivalents already exist. Spain's Fishing Points already has 2,000+ ratings, so proceed with caution (inference; before starting, search the local store with function keywords in the native language). Use Copernicus, EMODnet and TPXO directly, and divide the maps into bays and straits that locals actually name. Build a "captain" character that reads your fishing log. Copy the paywall: free 2-day forecasts and 3 AI messages a day, with regional fishing forecasts for paying users only, a short trial for monthly plans and a longer one for annual, and prices set to local incomes.

**How to get users** : in the one or two days before launch, post several short native-language fishing videos to build anticipation. After launch, post 1–2 videos a day, all pointing to the link in bio, with local fishing hashtags. After about a month, run a "3 months of membership" giveaway to drive comments. Add a native rating prompt early in the release cycle. In small countries, category Top Grossing thresholds are low, and landing in the top 10 can serve as validation, but don't mistake the ranking for scale.

**How soon to move** : there's no hard window, but the first mover can hold a country. Greece's two local apps launched only three weeks apart. Once you pick a country, launch within 3 months. Once one country works, follow up in the next 6 months, before global apps like Fishing Points seriously localize for the Mediterranean.

**What would show you're wrong** : ① Searching "fishing forecast" in the target country's language turns up two or more local apps that already offer sea state and bathymetry. ② After two months of daily videos, local-tag posts still get only a few hundred views, which means that country's anglers aren't on TikTok. ③ You reach the top 20 of the category Top Grossing chart, yet the subscription backend shows only a few hundred euros a month, or first-month renewal is very low. That would mean Greece's chart was a false signal, and this business can't support one person's time.

## Why Pelagos Fishing (iOS 6790781033) made it onto the charts

> Research date 2026-11-06. Data sources: our appstore database (since 2026-10-28), the Apple lookup API, Google Play pages, the official site pelagosfishing.com, TikHub (TikTok), and Jina web search. The app is not in our googleplay database.

### One line

It's a **Greece-only** sea fishing assistant with all copy in Greek: an AI "captain" chat, sea-state and fishing forecasts, depth-contour and seabed maps, and a manual catch log, monetized through a Pelagos Pro subscription. The developer is Nikolaos Andreadis, an indie developer in Thessaloniki. Its user acquisition comes down to one channel: **the official TikTok account posts 1–2 Greek-language fishing videos a day, pointing viewers to the link in bio** . It reached the top 10 of the Greek Sports Top Grossing chart. Half of that is the product (in this niche in Greece, it's the only localized, sea-fishing-specific tool with AI), and half is that **the Greek iOS Sports Top Grossing bar is very low** : a few subscriptions are enough to chart.

### 1. Basic data

| items | value | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Launched | iOS 2026-09-18; Android (com.pelagos.fishingApp, developer FishermanDev) launched around the same time | Apple lookup; Instagram post "LIVE on Google Play" |
| Version | 1.0.8 (2026-10-30, release note: "Added native 'rate us' button") | Apple lookup |
| iOS ratings | 9, 5.0 (lookup, 11-06); the database shows 10-28 at 7, rising to 11-04 8 | Apple lookup; appstore.app_day |
| Android | 5K+ downloads, category Tools, last updated 10-30 | Google Play page |
| Greece Sports Top Grossing chart | From 10-28 to 11-06 it stayed between #4 and #13, mostly #4–#8; 11-06 it was #8 | appstore.chart_rank |
| Greece Sports Top Free chart | #6–#17; 10-31 hit #207 on the Greek Top Free chart | appstore.chart_rank |
| Other countries | Only charted in Greece (countries_on_charts=1) | appstore |
| Pricing | Free version: 2-day forecasts, AI captain limited to 3 messages a day. Pro: €9.99 / €24.99 / €49.99 (on the official site the order should be monthly / quarterly / yearly), monthly plan with a 3-day trial, quarterly and yearly plans with a 7-day trial. | official site privacy page |
| Tech stack | Apple WeatherKit + Copernicus Marine (sea state), EMODnet depth contours + Mapbox, TPXO tide model computed on-device, RevenueCat, PostHog, Sentry | official site privacy page |

**Discount the Top Grossing ranking.** 11-06 The Greek Sports Top Grossing chart above it is F1 TV, NBA, Tennis TV, Sofascore, Formula 1, The Surfr, and UFC, with Card Ladder and FootyStats right behind. Oceanic+ is at #13 (appstore.v_chart). Greek iOS users are few, and Sports payments mostly come from live sports streaming, so sitting at #8 probably means only a few €9.99–€49.99 subscriptions a day. The exact amounts are **unverified** . People are clearly paying (9 ratings is enough to hold a Top Grossing spot), but the scale is probably a few hundred to a few thousand euros a month, not more (this is inference).

### 2. Competitors

| Product | Where | Launched | Scale (Greece) | How it differs from Pelagos |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Fishing Points | iOS/Android, Slovenian team | 2017 | Greek iOS: 419 ratings, Sports Top Grossing #52; Spain: 2,212 ratings | Global fishing spot, tide, and solunar tools with a Greek-language interface, but not specific to Greek waters, and no AI |
| Fishbrain | iOS/Android | 2012 | 20M users worldwide; only 5 ratings in Greece, Top Grossing #74 | Community and catch data are concentrated in North America and Northern Europe, with little Mediterranean content |
| Navionics(Garmin) | iOS/Android | 2014 | Greece Navigation Top Grossing #1 | Nautical charts plus depth contours, expensive, aimed at people who run boats, not shore-fishing forecasts |
| Windy.com / Windy.app | iOS/Android | 2015–16 | Greece Weather Free #1 / #4, rated 8,608 / 2,666 | The de facto standard for Greek anglers checking sea conditions; it has no catch log or fishing forecasts, and many users already rely on it |
| 2Hook(Double Star Software) | iOS/Android, Greek local | 2024-02 | Greece: 21 ratings, Sports Top Grossing #24 | A Greek local catch-log app (covered by psarema.natexmedia.gr 2024-11), with no AI, sea state, or depth contours |
| Powerful Fishing Map(Konstantinos Tsagkalidis) | iOS, Greek developer | 2026-08-26 | 4 ratings, Greece Sports Free #65 | A Greek peer from the same period, focused on spot maps, wrecks, and catch-statistics forecasts, and also building "personalized forecasts", but with far less visibility |
| Spearo: Spearfishing Forecast | iOS | 2026-07 | Greece: 11 ratings, Weather Top Grossing #9 | Spearfishing forecasts only; the Mediterranean has the same small market opportunity |
| Fish AI(Liftoff Labs) | iOS | 2025-01 | 114 ratings in Greece | An American AI fish-ID app that doesn't do local sea state |
| psarema.net depth-contour web pages, Marineforecaster | Web / App | Early on | Free | The free depth-contour tools Greek anglers used to stitch together |

**Verdict:** This category isn't short of builders; global giants and small local apps are both in it. But before Pelagos, no product did all four of these at once: **Greek language, Greek waters only, sea-fishing specific (LRF/Spinning), and AI plus sea state plus depth contours in one app** . Greek anglers used to switch between Windy, Navionics, the psarema depth-contour pages, and their own notes.

### 3. Where users come from

1. **Official TikTok account @pelagos_fishing (main channel, confirmed)** : display name pelagos_fishingapp, 1,068 followers, 5,539 total likes, 60 videos (TikHub, 11-06).
    - **Pre-launch teasers** : 2026-09-16 it posted 4 videos in one day, with 11k to 21k views and 16–21 comments each. It built the first wave of followers before launch.
    - **Nearly a video a day after launch: 1–2 per day** : every caption uses the same template, "#psarema #fishinggreece #fishingtiktoks #fishing download via the profile/website link". Most videos got 1k–7k views, the hits got 10-29 40,742, 10-19 24,320, and 11-03 16,239. The 50 videos together come to roughly 400k views.
    - Videos from late September linked directly to bit.ly short links for the Android and iOS downloads; from October on, they pointed to the website instead.

2. **Giveaway (confirmed)** : 11-02 posted "PELAGOS MEGA GIVEAWAY": 5 winners each get 3 months of Pro, and that video drew 24 comments (an order of magnitude above usual). 11-03 then posted a video urging people to enter (6,318 views). The giveaway drove comments and engagement, and also pushed up downloads.

3. **Facebook / Instagram (confirmed, small)** : a newly created Facebook page (id 61589936092322) posted the launch videos; the Instagram account @pelagos_fishing has 435 followers. Separately, a Facebook account named Miltos Andreadis (a digital creator with about 2,600 followers, posting geology content, and sharing the developer's surname) has reposted Pelagos's download link several times since 9-23, which looks like friends-and-family cross-promotion. The relationship between the two is **unverified** .

4. **In-store review prompts** : the 1.0.8 version added a dedicated native "rate us" prompt (10-30). But iOS still has only 9 ratings, so the effect hasn't shown up yet.

5. **Paid ads** : no evidence found. The TikTok videos were all organic. Our Meta and TikTok ad libraries only track products on our list, and **not finding ads doesn't mean there were none** .

6. **Media / X / Reddit** : nothing found. A search for "pelagos fishing" on x-radar returned 60 posts in 0 days, and no coverage by Greek fishing media turned up.

### 4. Why it took off

- **A gap no one filled in a small language** : the About page states the positioning: "tired of generic foreign apps that don't understand our spots, currents, and weather". So it built for "100% Greece", organizing the map by the Aegean, Ionian, Cretan, Saronic, and Thracian seas. Global giants won't make Greece-specific content, and local small apps (2Hook) only offer logging.

- **Cheap data sources make it look professional** : Copernicus, EMODnet, and TPXO are free EU or academic data. Add WeatherKit and wrap an LLM as an "AI captain", and one person can ship something that looks like Navionics plus Windy plus Fishbrain.

- **Organic traffic from the Greek fishing TikTok scene** : #psarema is a small community with little content. One account posting every day can reliably get a few thousand views per video. The occasional hit (40k views) brings a wave of downloads. The Android 5K+ downloads most likely came from this.

- **Paywall design** : the free tier is deliberately tight (2-day forecasts, 3 AI messages a day). The core "regional fishing forecast" is Pro-only, paired with a 3-day or 7-day trial, so the path to conversion is short.

- **Low bar for Top Grossing** : most of the Greek Sports Top Grossing top 10 are live sports streaming apps, so a few subscriptions are enough to reach the top 10, which makes it look bigger than it is.

### 5. Differentiation

Its edge is **extreme localization by region and language** , plus **packaging the AI as a "captain"** . Its features are much like Fishing Points and Fishbrain. The difference is that it only covers Greek seas, speaks only Greek, and focuses on LRF and Spinning, the shore and boat methods Greeks actually use. That is **genuinely why it broke through** : in a market like Greece, where Fishbrain has only 5 ratings, localization alone is a moat. Add TikTok's conversion of local fishing content, and you get the current chart position. But the moat is shallow. Powerful Fishing Map, a local competitor, is already doing nearly the same thing.

### 6. Visibility

**Still barely known** : no public revenue, no media coverage, 0 mentions on X, 1,068 TikTok followers, and only 9 iOS ratings. Apart from the auto-generated appfigures profile page, I found no third-party analysis.

### 7. Copycats

No one we could find is directly copying it. Powerful Fishing Map (a Greek developer, listed 2026-08-26, three weeks before Pelagos) is a parallel competitor, not a copycat.

### 8. What to borrow

- The play: "**small country × hobby niche × native language × free public data × LLM assistant** ". The same model can move straight to Italy (pesca), Spain, Croatia, Turkey (balık) and Portugal, all Mediterranean fishing markets. The EU's Copernicus and EMODnet data cover the whole Mediterranean, so porting it costs almost nothing.

- Acquisition: the day before launch, post 4 teaser videos in a row; after that, 1–2 local-language fishing short videos a day, all pointing to the bio link; run a "win 3 months of Pro" giveaway to drive engagement; add a native rating prompt in the build.

- Monetization: put the most-wanted feature (regional fishing forecasts) entirely behind the paywall, and cap the free AI tier at a set number of uses per day.

- Small countries' category Top Grossing charts make it easy to reach the top 10, which is good for validating demand, but don't mistake a rank for scale.

### 9. Uncertain

- Actual revenue and subscriber count (what Greece Sports Top Grossing #8 translates to in money is unverified).

- Of the 5K+ Android installs, how many came from TikTok and how many from organic search.

- Whether it runs paid Meta or TikTok ads (our ad libraries don't track it).

- Whether the "Pelagos team" is one person or several; Miltos Andreadis's relationship to the developer.

- Very few ratings (9), so there's no data on retention.
