# 38 yuan a week, and you can't finish one episode: how an "AI micro-drama monetization" app squeezed into the top 40 of the Entertainment Top Grossing chart

**What it is** An AI micro-drama generator on iPhone in the China store: type a sentence or paste a novel, and it auto-generates script, storyboards, images, and voiceover. You have to buy a membership first (38 yuan for the first week) before you can use it, and generation also costs separately purchased credits.

**Why it took off** Through 2026, the "AI micro-dramas make money" hype swept the feeds. It ran paid ads on Douyin, pulled in people looking for a side hustle with the promise of "zero-barrier monetization," then used a paywall plus credits to collect money from each of them. Its 4.4 store rating held up conversion.

**D** **How you could play it** Stop building "one-click monetization for beginners." If you build here, do what it doesn't: deliver sample clips first, price transparently per episode, and redo failed shots for free. Sell to small studios and novel authors who are already shipping episodes.

D grade: the trend, the paid acquisition, and the pricing playbook are all out in the open, and more than a dozen clones already exist. Micro-drama platforms' per-thousand-views payouts have dropped from about 100 yuan to 5–10 yuan, and guaranteed minimums for small teams have been cancelled. "Monetization" as a selling point is losing its force, and charge-dispute complaints add delisting risk. The window has basically closed. Few people know about it yet

"AI Micro-Drama Creation Tool" launched on the China App Store in early August, pitched as generating a whole episode from one sentence. By Nov 6 it had 2,923 ratings at 4.4 stars and ranked #40 in Entertainment Top Grossing. Yet nearly all of its written reviews are one-star. It has no proprietary model and nothing unique in its features. It makes money by riding downstream of the "AI micro-dramas can make money" side-hustle wave, collecting from people hoping to earn. Below: how the money is collected, where the traffic comes from, how many others are doing the same thing, and why I don't recommend following it now.

### A one-star review written after seeing it on Douyin

In Oct 8, a user left a long one-star review on the China App Store:

> I first saw it on Douyin and thought I had creative ideas too, so I tried it. To use it you have to buy a membership first, at least 38 yuan for one week, and you get 1200 credits... Those 1200 credits can't even finish one episode. And after generating characters and scenes, including plot clips, every time you want to edit or regenerate, you spend credits again... Doing the math roughly, even with 1000 credits, one episode costs 36 yuan.

The developer replied below: "the weekly membership credit allotment was raised by 60%, and the credits needed for image generation were cut by 50%." In the 11-06 store description, the credit pack went from "18 yuan for 500 credits" to "18 yuan for 800 credits," but the in-app purchase list at the bottom of the page still shows the old tier of 500 credits for 18 yuan.

This review lays out the whole thing: people come from Douyin wanting to make micro-dramas for money, they pay 38 yuan just to get in the door, and then they have to buy more credits to make a single episode.

### What it is

A Chinese-only, iPhone-only app. Enter a sentence or a novel, and it chains script, characters, storyboards, images, voiceover, and subtitles into a vertical micro-drama. The store copy's "character consistency," "AI smart storyboarding," and "rebirth revenge, domineering CEO sweet romance and other viral plot templates" are pretty much what every similar app says.

The store name is itself a string of search terms: "AI Micro-Drama Creation Tool - Zero-Barrier AI Micro-Drama, AI Short Video Creation and Monetization Tool," with the subtitle "Multi-platform promotion and monetization tool." The same app has changed its name at least three times. It was once "One-Click AI Micro-Drama Short Drama Product Promotion Explainer Video," and later "AI Micro-Drama, Real-Person Short Drama, Product Video, Text-to-Video." Whichever term is trending gets stuffed into the name.

The developer account is Mew Tech LLC. On the China store page, the provider is Tianjin Qimai Cat Technology Co., Ltd., and the privacy policy and user agreement are hosted on Tencent Docs. The team is probably very small (inference).

### How the money is collected

Two layers of charges stacked on each other (prices from the China store page, 11-06):

| What you pay for | Pricing |
|---|---|
| Membership (no membership, no access) | 68 yuan a week (38 for the first week), 98 a month, 198 a year, auto-renewing |
| Credit packs (deducted for both image and video generation) | From 18 yuan, up to 598 yuan |

The store description says "in-app features are for members only," so there's no free trial step; opening the app goes straight to the paywall. Membership comes with only a small number of credits, and the real cost is the credits. Reviewers' math looks like this:

- "The 198 annual Super membership only generates less than two episodes of plot" (10-13)

- "Beyond the monthly membership fee, each video episode costs roughly another 80 yuan" (10-04)

- "Out of 10 shots, 2 to 3 always fail... tapping regenerate charges you again" (9-21)

- "The membership top-up screen shows the annual membership as 18, but when I paid I found it was 198" (10-09)

- "Right after opening the app, before even reaching the main page, there's a continue button... below it is a small line saying auto-renewal" (10-16)

This approach is aggressive, but it clearly collects money. Almost all of the top of the Entertainment Top Grossing chart is big-company short-drama platforms, so a single-function small tool reaching #40 suggests real revenue (inference; the actual figure isn't visible from outside).

### Where the traffic comes from

**Douyin.** Reviews repeatedly mention it: "I first saw it on Douyin" (10-08), "junk software recommended by junk people on Douyin, monetization isn't that easy" (10-16), "the ad says free for a week, but you have to pay" (10-16), "false advertising in the ads" (9-23). Searching its name on Douyin turns up no organic viral videos, so users were most likely acquired through feed ads or creator videos with links bought for promotion (inference). The privacy label on the store page also says the device identifier is used to "track you across other companies' apps and websites," which paid-acquisition apps usually need for attribution.

**The trend itself.** Through 2026, "ordinary people make money with AI micro-dramas" was everywhere on Douyin, Zhihu, and Bilibili. Tutorials on this topic regularly hit 80,000 or more likes on Douyin, and a Eastmoney report from August said the AI micro-drama market is expected to pass 40 billion this year, with over 500k creators. So the ads don't need to explain what a micro-drama is; "zero-barrier, monetizable" is enough.

**Pacing.** From August to November, the China store rating count grew by about 30 per day on average, but it has clearly slowed recently: from 11-05 to 11-06 it added only 14. From 10-28 to 11-04 it dropped out of the top 200 of every chart. When 11-04 shipped version 1.3.0, it was back at #41 in Entertainment Top Grossing and #156,11-06 in Free the next day, then reached #40 in Top Grossing and #112 in Free. This looks more like a new round of paid acquisition than organic recovery (inference).

### How the 4.4 rating came about

Of the 71 written text reviews visible in the store (from 8-15 to 10-26), 67 are one-star and only 2 are five-star, one of which says "alright alright, you win." Yet the overall score is 2,923 ratings at 4.4 stars.

In other words, over two thousand ratings with stars only and no text stand in stark contrast to the people who wrote something. The most likely explanation is that the app prompts for a rating after users receive credits or export their first episode (inference). Rating manipulation can't be ruled out either, but I haven't verified it. As long as the store page holds a 4.4 rating, the bought traffic keeps converting.

### Who it's competing with

Plenty, and they all look alike (China store data, 11-06):

| Product | Launched | Scale | Compared with alternatives |
|---|---|---|---|
| Jimeng AI (ByteDance) | 2024-08 | 23,539 ratings, ranked #5 in Graphics & Video Top Grossing | The most common tutorial combo is "Jimeng + Doubao + CapCut"; this app just chains that workflow into one app |
| Kling AI (Kuaishou) | 2024-11 | 84,400 ratings, +7 in the last 1,294 days | Its own model, with free quota; it asks for money as soon as you open it |
| Deep Story Tweets - AI Micro-Drama Production | 2026-08-23 | 4,378 ratings, +7 in the last 535 days, ranked #39 in Top Grossing | Also based in Tianjin, with nearly the same playbook; it launched later but gained traction faster |
| SuperAI - AI Micro-Drama Creation, Video Product Promotion Explainer Videos | 2023-05 | 22,279 ratings | An older tool renamed to ride the micro-drama trend; its early subtitle was nearly identical |
| AI Mate (Novel Posts · Short Drama) | 2024-08 | 63,618 ratings | A previous-generation "novel post" tool that swapped in micro-drama terminology |
| Manshuo - AI Micro-Drama Creation Tool, Micro-Drama Master, Dream Spirit AI, Micro-Drama Goose, AiOne Creation Manga... | Launched within 2026 years | Dozens to hundreds of ratings each | The same template in different skins, with "zero-barrier / monetization / tool" packed into every name |

Its only real difference from these rivals is more aggressive paid acquisition and harsher charging. The trend, the pricing model, and the renaming tactics are all out in the open. Anyone can copy them, and a crowd already is.

### The downstream money is shrinking

According to 36 Kr, Hongguo's AI micro-drama payout per 10K views fell from roughly ¥100 at last year's peak to just ¥5–10 for most projects now; small and mid-sized AI live-action drama teams have had their guarantees removed, switched to a 20% revenue share. One person posted a backend screenshot showing 180M views settled at only 180k. A Tencent Cloud developer community 10-12 article put the hit rate for AI micro-dramas at 0.117%. In the same period, scams like "pay ¥2000 to learn AI micro-dramas" and "AI micro-drama training and placement" started getting named by the media.

That's bad news for a tool whose pitch is "teach you to make money." After users lose money a few times, the "zero-barrier monetization" ad line gets harder to sell. Meanwhile the bad reviews cluster around "random charges, nudged renewals, refunds impossible," and some reviewers are already urging others to "report it through Apple's reporting line and get it pulled," so the risk of Apple taking action has been there all along.

### If it were you

**D: Understand the playbook, but don't copy it.** It runs on trends, paid acquisition, and a paywall. None of that is out of reach for anyone, and because anyone can do it, there are already a dozen-plus reskinned apps like this. Downstream platforms are cutting revenue shares, and this trend is fading.

**Who it suits:** teams that already run paid acquisition on Douyin for tool apps and have ready creatives and a payback model can test it as a short-term category. The condition is that you accept the product going stale in three months, and you swap to the next trend after that.

**Who it doesn't suit:** indie devs who want a long-term product; people who have never run feed ads (this business is nothing but paid acquisition); anyone counting on organic App Store traffic; anyone who won't rely on hidden charges and pop-ups asking for ratings to convert. Take those away and what's left is a reskin that costs more than Jimeng or Kling.

**If you do build it, how:** stop making "one-click monetization for beginners" products. That space is packed and its reputation is already damaged. The worthwhile gap is what the current apps do badly: offer a free sample episode before asking for money; price per episode and state clearly what one episode costs; don't charge for regenerating failed shots; save character designs so they can be reused across episodes. Target small studios and novelists who already submit to platforms, since they can calculate costs and will pay for reliable output. This path means competing on output quality head-on with big-company models and CapCut, and that's not easy.

**How to get users:** the beginner market runs on Douyin feed ads and creators posting links, with screen recordings of "one sentence to one micro-drama episode" as the creative. For the studio market, go to micro-drama creator communities, Zhihu, and the comment sections of Bilibili tutorials, and trade free credits for their real work and word of mouth.

**Before when:** if you must build for the beginner market, you only have this year's tail to work with. News about payouts and guarantees is spreading, so searches for "AI micro-drama side hustle" will probably drop noticeably around the Spring Festival at the end of 2027 (inference).

**What would mean you're wrong:** ① Hongguo or Douyin raises the per-10K-view rate for AI micro-dramas again or restores guarantees, and money flows back downstream; ② this app or Deep故事推文AI keeps its rating growth from slowing for a full month without added paid acquisition, and holds its place on the charts; ③ a similar app appears that offers a sample first and prices per episode, gets mostly positive text reviews, and enters the top 100 grossing, showing that a "done right" version has paying buyers.

Where users come from

- **Evidence** **Douyin feed ads or creator recommendations** : in reviews: "garbage app recommended by a garbage person on Douyin" (10-16), "I first saw it on Douyin" (10-08), "the ad said free for a week" (10-16); TikHub finds no organic videos naming it

- **Evidence** **riding the AI micro-drama side-hustle trend** : East Money: the AI micro-drama market in 2026 is expected to exceed ¥40B, with over 500k creators; Douyin videos titled "ordinary people can make AI micro-dramas too" have 7–90k likes

- **Evidence** **keyword-stuffed store names, changed subtitles** : the same developer ID has used three names: "One-click AI micro-drama, short drama, product promo, explainer video creation" / "AI micro-drama, real-person short drama, product promo, text-to-video" / "zero-barrier … monetization tool"; after 11-04 shipped 1.3.0 versions, it charted again in 11-05

- **Evidence** **cheap first-week trial converting to auto-renewal (hidden charges)** : reviews: under the "Continue" button on entry, small print says auto-renewal; "the annual membership displayed 18, but I was charged 198"; "tiny font hides the ¥48/week renewal terms"

- Inference **in-app prompts for ratings** : of 71 written reviews, 67 are 1 stars, yet the store average is 4.4 (2,923 ratings)

## AI Micro-Drama Creation Tool (iOS 6791110931) research report

> In short: this is an AI micro-drama app that generates a drama from one sentence, published on the China store by Tianjin Qimai Cat Technology Co., Ltd. (the App Store developer name is Mew Tech LLC), launched 2026-08-02. It didn't take off because the product is good. It took off because it **caught the nationwide side-hustle wave of 2026 around "AI micro-dramas can make money"** : it pulls users on Douyin with the pitch "zero barrier, make money, free trial," and on opening, slams a hard paywall (weekly membership ¥38 first week, renewal ¥68), selling credit packs (¥18–598) on top of membership. Nearly all the bad reviews are about "random charges," yet the overall rating still sits at 4.4, clearly propped up by in-app rating prompts. The product itself has no differentiation, and there are at least a dozen reskinned apps with the exact same playbook.

### 1. How to read the data card

- **Ratings** : by 2026-11-06 the China store had 2,904 ratings in total (appstore library app_day; the iTunes lookup already showed 2,923 that day), roughly 96 days after launch, averaging about 30 per day. 11-05→11-06 added only 14, so the launch surge is over.

- **Charts** (appstore library chart_rank): from 10-28 to 11-04 it **was never in the top 200 of any chart** ; in 11-05 it charted again: Entertainment Top Grossing #41, Top Free #156; in 11-06 Top Grossing #40, Top Free #112. The store page that day showed Entertainment Top Free #103. The timing lines up with the 11-04 release of version 1.3.0 and the new subtitle, which looks like a fresh round of paid acquisition, not organic growth.

- **The rating split is very unusual** : of the 71 written reviews the library captured (2026-08-15 to 10-26), 1-star ones number 67, 2-star 1, 4-star 1, 5-star 2 (appstore library review); yet the store average is 4.4 (2,923 ratings). In other words, most of the 2,900 ratings are high scores with no text, and they contradict what users write. The most likely cause is an in-app prompt asking for a rating (e.g. SKStoreReview shown after a reward of credits or the first finished video). Rating manipulation is also possible; I have not verified this.

- **Third-party estimate** : MWM (mwm.ai) estimates 50k+ downloads and notes it passed 50k downloads within 90 days of launch, reached in 2026 October (https://mwm.ai/apps/ai-ai/6791110931). This is a third-party model estimate; treat it only as a reference.

- **Pricing** (China store page): weekly membership ¥68 (first week ¥38), monthly 98, annual 198; credit packs ¥18/800 to ¥598/30000; "in-app features are for members only," and image and video generation both deduct credits. The privacy policy and user agreement are hosted on Tencent Docs, a sign of a very small team.

### 2. Competitors

Apps for "AI micro-drama / short drama generation" were very crowded in 2026. The table below uses numbers from the appstore library app_profile, China store, 2026-11-06.

| Competitors | Platform | Launched | Scale (cn ratings / new in last 7 days) | How it differs |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Jimeng AI (ByteDance/Lianlian) | iOS/Android/web | 2024-08 | 23,539 / 144; Top Grossing #5 in Graphics & Video | a general image and video generation base; the most common "Jimeng + Doubao + CapCut" combo in micro-drama tutorials uses it; this app's only pitch is chaining the workflow together |
| Kling AI (Kuaishou) | iOS/Android/web | 2024-11 | 84,400 / 1,294; Top Free #7 in Graphics & Video | big-company model with free credits; this app charges from the start |
| CapCut / Jianying (ByteDance) | iOS/Android | 2019 | 22.1M / 39,145 | big-company editor with AI video generation, widest reach |
| Deep Story Explainer AI - Micro-Drama Production (Tianjin Yuechi) | iOS | 2026-08-23 | 4,378 / 535; Top Grossing #39 in Graphics & Video | same city, same period, same playbook ("explainer/micro-drama/monetization" keyword stuffing, membership plus credits); currently growing even faster than this app |
| SuperAI - AI Micro-Drama Creation, Video Product Promotion Explainer Videos | iOS | 2023-05 | 22,279 / 2; Top Grossing #23–28 in Photo & Video | an old tool renamed to ride "micro-drama"; this app's earlier subtitle "product promo explainer video" was nearly identical to it |
| AI Mate (Novel Posts · Short Drama) | iOS | 2024-08 | 63,618 / 115; Top Grossing #6 (6012 category) | an earlier-generation "novel-to-video" tool, relabeled with micro-drama wording |
| Manshuo - AI Micro-Drama Creation Tool (Shenzhen Luchuan) | iOS | 2026-02 | unverified (not charted in cn) | nearly identical name, launched half a year earlier |
| Shanling AI (Guangzhou) | iOS | 2026-05 | Not verified | Similar, with ad creative generation |
| Manjuane (Omi) | iOS | 2026-06 | 101 / 9; Top Grossing #158 | Similar, not took off yet |
| Menglin AI, Manju Master, AI Manju Creation Master, Deep All-in-One AI, AiOne Manju Creation, etc. | iOS (mostly individual developer accounts) | 2026-01 to 09 | Dozens to hundreds of ratings each | Same template reskinned across many apps, with names stuffed with "zero barrier / monetize / magic tool" |
| Web tools: Xiaoya Manju, Aihui Manying, Chengxing Dream Factory, etc. | Web | 2026 | Not verified | B2B assembly line sold to studios |
| Manju viewing platforms: Hongguo Manju, Huolong Manju (Tencent), Hippo Theater | iOS/Android | 2025-12 / 2026-02 | Hongguo Manju 28,200 / 1,555, Entertainment free #2 | Not a competitor, it's the **demand source** : these platforms buy manju and pay revenue share, which is what created the "making manju makes money" narrative |

**Verdict** : lots of competitors, and this product has nothing unique in features; the description's "character consistency, storyboards, hit plot templates" are all claimed by similar apps.

### 3. Growth tactics

1. **Douyin ads or creator promotion (confirmed, evidence from user reviews)** : "Junk software recommended by junk people on Douyin, making money isn't that easy" (2026-10-16), "I first saw it on Douyin" (10-08), "The ad says free for a week, but you have to pay" (10-16), "Ad is false advertising" (09-23). Searching Douyin via TikHub found no organic videos naming it, suggesting it relied on feed ads or creator content with links, not organic virality. The ad library only tracks products on its list, so specific creatives can't be looked up.

2. **Riding the "AI manju side hustle" trend** : AI manju has been widely recognized as a hot trend in 2026. Eastmoney reported the domestic AI manju market is expected to pass ¥40B in 2026, with over 500k creators (https://finance.eastmoney.com/a/202608123839434510.html); a Zhihu article claimed the "window is only 3 months" (https://zhuanlan.zhihu.com/p/2030942338927814318); on Douyin, videos like "AI manju, even ordinary people can get started" get 7–90k likes (TikHub Douyin search). Ads don't need to educate users, just say "zero barrier + can monetize".

3. **Store keyword stuffing, frequently changed subtitles (confirmed)** : the same App ID has used at least three names: "One-click AI manju short drama product-placement video creation" (retained in MWM and US store page), "AI manju, real-person short drama, product-placement videos, text-to-video" (Norway developer page), and the current "Zero-barrier AI manju AI short drama video creation monetization tool". The names cover search terms like manju/short drama/text-to-video/product placement/monetization.

4. **Hard paywall plus hidden auto-renewal (confirmed, from reviews)** : "Just opened the app and before even reaching the main page, there's a continue button… with small text below saying auto-renewal" (10-16); "Hid the ¥48/week high auto-renewal terms in extremely small font" (09-30); "Shows annual membership 18, but after topping up I found it was 198" (10-09). Money mainly comes from converting the first week's ¥38 trial into auto-renewal, plus repeat purchases of credit packs.

5. **Prompted ratings (inferred)** : text reviews are almost all 1 stars, yet the overall score is 4.4, suggesting many high scores with no text came from in-app rating prompts. This suppresses negative reviews and keeps store-page conversion from dropping.

6. **Developer identity packaging** : the developer ID in the database, 6797798595 (Mew Tech LLC), is newer than the App ID 6791110931 and the "Bi Gan Wen Ku" app it owns from 2024 years ago, suggesting both apps were later **moved** to this foreign-sounding new account; the actual seller entity is still Tianjin Qimaimao (inferred: transferring to an LLC may be to separate complaints or reopen an account). Tianjin Yuechi (Deep Story Push AI) and Tianjin Youma (Anime Follow Club), which have similar names and tactics, may be from the same Tianjin ad-buying studio circle, unverified.

### 4. Why it took off

- **Timing** : in summer and autumn 2026, "AI manju can make money" flooded Douyin, Bilibili, Zhihu, and Xiaohongshu, and many beginners looking for side hustles actively sought out tools (see the market reports and Douyin tutorial popularity above).

- **Distribution** : Douyin feed ads and creator content pulled people in directly (reviews mention Douyin and ads many times), then keyword-stuffed store names caught search traffic.

- **Monetization design** : pay before you can use it (weekly 38/68) + generations cost credits + failed regenerations also cost credits, which squeezes ARPU to the max. Reviews include "topped up over ¥50", "one episode costs 80 yuan", "annual membership 198 only gets you under two episodes". That's how it landed at #40 on the entertainment Top Grossing chart.

- **Reputation propped up by prompted ratings** : real reputation is terrible, but a 4.4-score store page still lets bought traffic convert.

- **Not because of the product** : no exclusive model, no better character consistency (reviews repeatedly complain "characters not accurately positioned" and "10 shots, 2–3 failed"), and no content distribution channel of its own.

### 5. Differentiation

Basically none. Compared with foundation models like Jimeng and Kling, it just chains script, storyboard, generation, and voiceover into a phone pipeline, with the selling point "no learning needed". Against dozens of similar reskinned apps, its only difference is more aggressive ad buying and pricing. So **differentiation didn't make it work; the distribution playbook plus the trend timing did** .

### 6. How visible it is

- Revenue isn't public, and no media or X influencers have written about it (x-radar search for "AI manju" in the last 60 days returned 0 posts; web search only found store pages and MWM aggregation pages).

- But this **category** has been widely discussed, and there are many copycat reskinned apps (see section 2). Another Tianjin app, Deep Story Push AI (launched 2026-08-23), is gaining traction even faster. Low barrier, lots of copycats, and the information gap is basically gone.

- Risk: negative reviews concentrate on "unexpected charges and inducing renewal"; Apple review or consumer complaints (similar AI courses and tools already have complaints on Black Cat Complaints) could take it down at any time.

### 7. What to borrow

- Trending side hustle + productized tool: package a content format that's going viral with "it makes money" as a "one-click tool", buy ads on Douyin, convert the low-price first-week trial into auto-renewal, then layer on credit repeat purchases.

- Store names rotate with trending search terms (product placement/store visits → manju/short drama/monetization), with the same App ID reskinned to follow trends.

- Risk note: this model is held up by hidden charges and prompted ratings, with poor retention and reputation and a short lifecycle (this product gained 7 new ratings in 14 days; it needs repeated rounds of ad buying to get back on the charts).

### 8. Still unclear

- The specific ad creatives, spend, and ROI (not tracked by the ad library).

- Whether the 4.4 score comes from in-app rating prompts or fake ratings.

- Whether Tianjin Qimaimao, Yuechi, and Youma are the same team.

- Actual revenue: only inferred from entertainment Top Grossing #40 that there's some cash flow; the scale is unverified.

- Which model's API the generation uses (guessed to be domestic video models like Jimeng or Kling).
