Seven months late to "scroll the Bible": a Sydney dev and a million-follower Christian fitness creator
What it is An iPhone app that lets you read the Bible by swiping up through one verse at a time, like TikTok, with explanations, reading plans and AI Q&A. Monthly or yearly subscription.
Why it took off The "stop scrolling your phone, scroll the Bible instead" category was made big by Scroll The Bible. BibleSwipe followed late, but it is tied long-term to a million-follower Christian creator who posts talking-head videos every day, and the videos that work get pushed into Meta ads.
CHow you could follow Don't make another English Bible version. Take the "swap short-video scrolling for scrolling scripture" idea into a language or faith nobody has covered yet. Sign a big creator in that niche on a revenue share first, batch-post short videos yourself, and run paid ads on whichever one works.

BibleSwipe turns the Bible into a feed you swipe through one verse at a time, with the slogan "stop scrolling your phone, scroll the Bible instead." The idea isn't its own: Scroll The Bible launched seven months earlier and is estimated by outsiders at about $2M a month, and more than a dozen identical apps exist. BibleSwipe made it onto the Books charts in a few countries. The product didn't drive that; a million-follower Christian creator posting videos for it every day did. This piece covers where its traffic comes from, how much money it makes, and what is still left to claim in this space.
Day 29, the numbers stopped climbing
In 2026 Sep 17, Sydney indie developer Matty Hempstead posted on X "Day 29 of scaling a mobile app": monthly subscription revenue $1,315, revenue that day $73, 148 new installs. He said himself: "MRR seems to have hit a steady state," with new subscriptions and churn balancing out. A week earlier he had just passed 100 paid subscriptions, and on day 14 he was still saying "nearly at $1k MRR."
The post doesn't name the app. He has two Christian apps: Prayrise, an alarm app launched in Jun 25, and BibleSwipe, launched in Aug 5. Working from the dates, day 1 is around Aug 20, so it is more likely BibleSwipe, though it could be Prayrise (inference, unverified). Either way, a subscription Christian app built by one person plus a creator lands at roughly this scale.
What it is
Open the app and you get one passage per screen; swipe up for the next verse, with the same gesture as TikTok. Tap in for a simple explanation and background, plus reading plans, bookmarks, daily streaks and a "BibleSwipe AI" you can ask questions. It also compares your results against your screen time. English only, 222 MB.
Pricing: a free trial is pushed first, then a paywall at $4.99/month or $29.99/year (App Store US page, 11-06).
What the numbers look like
- Ratings: 175 in the US, averaging 4.7; 25 in Canada, 17 in Australia. In the US it added 22 ratings in 7 days (App Store, 11-06).
- Charts: in the US it first entered the Books free chart in Nov 3 (#187), and was #151 in Nov 6. In Canada and Australia it hit #47–#109 on the Books free chart. In Cyprus, Hungary, Poland, Austria and Ireland it reached #59–#152 on the Books Top Grossing chart. Those small-country Books grossing charts have a low bar, a few subscriptions can get you on, so they are not a revenue signal.
- Comparison: in the same week, Scroll The Bible's US ratings rose by 677, BibleSwipe's by 22, about 3% of its rival's pace.
Where users come from
1. One creator, rotating two apps. Bryce Wagner is @bwag_fit on Instagram, with about 1M followers; on TikTok @bwag_fit48 has 1.46M followers. His bio reads "Christ follower ✝️ Building @biblefocus.app @bwag.prayrise." From the day Prayrise launched he has posted "Download Prayrise" Reels; later it became "Download Bibleswipe: stop doom scrolling on App Store," and on TikTok the title is "Bible Swipe app – Stop doomscrolling and start Bible scrolling." His TikTok runs 3 to 5 faith videos a day, mostly a few thousand to 20k views, occasionally past 100k (TikTok, 10-28 to 11-05).
The word "Building" in his bio suggests he is not taking a one-off ad fee but acting more like a long-term partner on a revenue share or equity (inference, unverified). A US-store comment from Oct 25 shows how the route works: "I saw a video last night about this and then I actually searched it up."
2. Batch-post your own videos and wait for one to hit. A developer shared numbers in Sep 10: 45 TikTok videos, 3.8M views in total, about two a day. The top video alone got more views than the bottom 24 combined. His take: "The curse of playing these power law games is that it's very demotivating until you finally get a winner." In Sep 17 he added that he was "recruiting others to post organic videos."
3. Push the winners into Meta ads. Sep 2: "I've just started running them as meta ads"; Sep 17: "Early meta ads signs are looking very interesting." How much was spent and whether it is still running is not visible in the public ad library. It could not be found on its page, but that does not mean it wasn't run.
4. Stuffing hot keywords into the name. "Stop Doomscrolling" became the search term for this category after Scroll The Bible made it big. The "You Might Also Like" row on the store page is full of the same kind of app, so they cross-promote each other (inference).
No media outlet has covered it, and searching "bibleswipe" on X turns up no discussion. The developer has 590 followers on X. A Sep 10 post about "hooking a virtual fruit fly brain up to flytok to scroll videos" got 27k likes and 1.55M views, but it has nothing to do with this app.
Money and user complaints
If the September numbers really were BibleSwipe, it made a bit over a thousand dollars a month and had already leveled off. The most common complaint in store reviews is the paywall:
- "I shouldn't have to pay to read the Bible." (1 stars, 10-24)
- "Even if God's salvation is free" (2 stars, 09-30)
- "I'm a broke blue collar husband with a toddler and another on the way. Not gonna add another subscription… 5 stars cuz this is cool." (gave 5 stars but won't pay, 10-25)
- The paywall is buggy: "the paywall bug has been back, and it's like a loop" (10-17); on day three after launch someone wrote that "there wasn't any number values for monthly and yearly" on the paywall, so no prices showed (08-08).
- One more: "I can't change the version I want to read", meaning you can't switch Bible translations (08-25).
Some people already resist paying for the Bible; a buggy paywall will make trial conversion worse.
Who it's competing with
US store, 11-06:
| Product | Launched | US rating / 7-day new ratings | Best Books free-chart placement | How |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Scroll The Bible | 2025-12 | 19,323 / +677 | #2 | The originator; has Greek and Hebrew originals and in-depth commentary. After July started IG/FB ads, it gained 15k+ downloads a week; outsiders estimate about $2M a month, and it was covered on X, LinkedIn and in the news. |
| BibleScroll: Christian Focus | 2026-02 | 9,018 / +661 | #9 | Built by the company behind the screen-time app BePresent; has 300+ ads running on Meta at the same time. |
| Bible Shorts | 2026-07 | 4,054 / +563 | #4 | Bible drama short videos, 1.5M to 3.8M TikTok views per video |
| BibleWatch, Sacred Shorts | 2026-02 to 05 | 14k / 9 thousand | #11 | Video version |
| Bible Mode | 2025-05 | 12,775 / +83 | — | Locks social apps until you read scripture |
| Bible Loop (by YouVersion) | 2026-05 | 95 / +59 | #5 | The biggest Bible app goes head-to-head, free |
| Holy Scroll, Scroll for Jesus, HopeScroll, Swipe Right Bible and about ten more | 2025-11 to 2026-10 | Mostly 0–140 | Not charting | Same idea, nearly identical names |
BibleSwipe's features are almost identical to Scroll The Bible's, seven months later, and its ratings are only 1% of theirs. It's a bit better than the names in the bottom row, but the only real edge it has is one creator.
Why this one
- The category has already been proven by others: Scroll The Bible showed that "swap the short-video swipe for scripture" can sell subscriptions, and BibleSwipe copied both the concept and the trial-then-annual-plan pricing structure.
- Distribution is ready-made: a million-follower Christian creator tied to it long-term posts templated "Download X on App Store" talking-head videos every day, pushing Prayrise first, then BibleSwipe.
- Videos are batch-posted, and the ones that work go into Meta ads.
The product itself has nothing recognizably different. Swap out that creator and it's just another name in the bottom row.
If it were you
C: the English "scroll the Bible" slot is already crowded, and copying it leaves no room. What you can take is its distribution structure, and the idea of "replacing a bad habit with different content."
Who it suits: developers who can land a big creator in a niche as a long-term partner (on a revenue share or equity, not a one-off ad buy), or small teams that know a faith community or a language other than English well.
Who it doesn't suit: anyone aiming at an English Bible-scrolling app. The top tier is at the million-dollar-a-month level, YouVersion is already in the market, BePresent is buying ads at scale, and the dozen same-name apps aren't charting. Anyone relying on creators-free store search ends up in that bottom row.
How to do it: take a format whose originator has already proven it can make money but which is still English-only, and build it for another language or faith, for example Spanish or Portuguese Catholic and evangelical audiences, or Quran or Buddhist-text "verse-by-verse swiping" (whether there is room is unverified; search the App Store in each country before you start). Don't offer fewer features than it does: translation switching, offline reading, in-depth commentary. Test the paywall thoroughly, since this audience is especially sensitive to "paying to read scripture": keep reading the text free and charge for commentary, AI Q&A and plans.
How to get users: copy its playbook. First find a creator with 100k to 1M followers in the niche and sign a revenue share, having them post the same "stop scrolling, scroll X" talking-head video every day. Then batch-post organic videos yourself, starting at two a day, and be ready for the first 20–30 to get almost no views. Whichever one takes off, push it into Meta ads.
When to get in: the English slot's window has already passed. The window for other languages depends on when Scroll The Bible and YouVersion release localized versions; the suggestion is to launch before the first half of 2027 (inference).
Signs you've misread the window: ① Scroll The Bible or YouVersion launches a version in your language first; ② the creator you signed posts daily, but a month later trial conversions still haven't taken off, meaning this audience won't pay for this format, or BibleSwipe's traffic wasn't coming from that creator to begin with; ③ your MRR flatlines at $1–2K for about a month, with new subs not outpacing churn, meaning this format can't support a business in smaller languages and is only good as a side project.

One line
Matty Hempstead, an indie dev in Sydney, Australia, built BibleSwipe, an iOS app for reading the Bible one swipe at a time, like a short-video feed (2026-08-05 launch, $4.99/month, $29.99/year). It isn't the category creator, it's a copycat. The category leader, Scroll The Bible 2025-12, launched, is now #2 on the US Books Top Free chart, is estimated at about $2M/month, and has been repeatedly covered on X, LinkedIn and in the news. BibleSwipe got onto a small store's Books chart by working with Bryce Wagner (bwag_fit), a Christian creator with over a million followers, who posts short videos for it, plus Meta ads. Its scale is tiny (177 ratings in the US, +7 over 22 days), while Scroll The Bible gained +7 over 677 days in the same period.
1. Basic data
- Released 2026-08-05, Books category, developer Matty Hempstead (developer_id 1840158791). The same developer also has Prayrise: Christian Alarm (2026-06-25,289 ratings) and Daymax: Photo Alarm (2 ratings). Source: iTunes lookup, 2026-11-06.
- Current version 1.0.5 (2026-10-13), English only, 222 MB. In-app purchases: BibleSwipe Pro $4.99, $29.99. Source: US App Store page (read via r.jina.ai, 2026-11-06).
- Ratings: US 177 (average 4.68), Canada 27, Australia 17. Source: iTunes lookup, 2026-11-06.
- Charts (appstore library):
- The US first entered Books Top Free on 2026-11-03 (#187); 11-06 was #151 (the store page shows #142). US ratings went from 11-03 to 153,11-06 to 175, gaining about +4–11 per day.
- Canada Books Top Free #47–109, Australia #59–101 (10-28 to 11-06). It has also charted on Books Top Grossing (#59–152) in Cyprus, Hungary, Poland, Austria, Australia, and Ireland. Books Top Grossing bars are very low in these small storefronts; a couple of subscriptions is enough to chart.
- On the data card, the all-storefront ratings went from 10-28 to 72, and from 11-06 to 259. The jump on 11-03 came from US data being added to the collection (when the US started charting), not from a real surge that day.
- Revenue clues: the developer has been posting numbers on X under "Day N of scaling a mobile app" (2026-09-02 day 14: close to $1K MRR, 229 new installs; 09-10 days 21–22: 100 paid subscriptions, $1,302 MRR; 09-17 day 29: $1,315 MRR, "new subs and churn are even"). Sources: x.com/mattyhempstead/status/2095055387871650153, 2098085753708597665, 2100620891076067669. The posts don't name the app. By timing, day 1 falls around 08-20, later than BibleSwipe's launch (08-05), so it could be BibleSwipe, but it could also be Prayrise, launched on 06-25 (which has more ratings). Unverified.
2. Competitors: the category is already crowded
"Turning the Bible into a TikTok-style vertical swipe feed to replace doomscrolling" is one of the most crowded Christian app niches of 2026. US data (appstore library app_profile, 2026-11-06):
| Product | Launched | US rating / 7-day new ratings | Best Books rank | Compared with BibleSwipe |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Scroll The Bible(Gabriel Jacobson / JCBSN LLC) | 2025-12-17 | 19,323 / +677 | Top Free #2 | The category pioneer. One verse per screen, swipe up; tap in for deep commentary and Greek / Hebrew originals; subscriptions $4.99–39.99. After 2026-07 started running IG/FB ads, it was downloaded over 15k times a week, and Victoire's estimate of monthly revenue grew from about $1M to about $2M (X @rdominguezibar, 2026-10-28; LinkedIn post "Founder Makes $2M/Month with Bible App"; covered by Heartlander News) |
| BibleScroll: Christian Focus (by Screen Detox Inc, the company behind BePresent) | 2026-02-01 | 9,018 / +661 | Top Free #9 | Made by a screen-time control company; the "Charles Winston" Page is running 314 ads on Meta (metaads library) |
| Bible Shorts: Watch & Study (by Mengnan Liu) | 2026-07-30 | 4,054 / +563 | Top Free #4 | Bible turned into short video drama; TikTok @bibleshortsvideos single videos get 1.56M–3.84M views |
| Sacred Shorts: Bible Videos | 2026-02-27 | 9,305 / +424 | Top Grossing 53 | Video version |
| BibleWatch - Watch the Bible | 2026-05-06 | 14,702 / +354 | Top Free 11 | Video version |
| Bible Mode: Reduce Screen Time | 2025-05-02 | 12,775 / +83 | Top Grossing 165 | Takes the "lock apps, read Scripture first" route |
| Bible Loop (by Life.Church / YouVersion) | 2026-05-15 | 95 / +59 | Top Free 5 | A big player entered: YouVersion itself has 13.9M US ratings |
| Holy Scroll, Scroll for Jesus, Holy Doomscrolling, HolyScroller, First Scroll, HopeScroll, Swipe Right Bible, Verse - Swipe Through the Word, Put God First, and others | 2025-11 to 2026-10 | Mostly 0–140 | Not charting | Same idea, similar names; a row of them appears in the store's "You Might Also Like" |
| Big players / incumbents: YouVersion Bible, Hallow, Bible Chat, and others | 2009–2023 | Hundreds of thousands to tens of millions | Top 10 | Full-featured, not focused on "scrolling" |
Conclusion: BibleSwipe has no identifiable product differentiation. "Swipe" is just a different word; its features (verse-by-verse swiping, simple explanations, AI Q&A, reading plans, streak tracking, screen-time comparison) are essentially the same as Scroll The Bible's, and it came more than 7 months later. Ruben (@rdominguezibar) on X also wrote that after Scroll The Bible, BibleScroll, Sacred Shorts, and 4 other copycats appeared, and 3 of them are earning over $50k a month. BibleSwipe is one of the smaller copycats in that later wave.
3. Growth: where users came from
- Creator partnership in the vertical, confirmed: Bryce Wagner (IG @bwag_fit, about 1M followers; TikTok @bwag_fit, 48 1.46M followers; also has a Facebook Page). His IG bio reads "Christ follower ✝️ Building @biblefocus.app @bwag.prayrise," and he has a dedicated @bwag.prayrise account. This shows he isn't doing one-off ad deals; he is long-term tied to several Christian apps and promotes BibleFocus for them at the same time.
- Starting 2026-06-25 (the day Prayrise launched), he posted "Download Prayrise" Reels, and kept posting through 6–August (IG single posts with 516 to 16k likes; TikTok videos tagged @prayriseapp with 14k–105k views).
- He later posted a series of "Download Bibleswipe: stop doom scrolling on App Store" Reels on IG / Facebook (instagram.com/reel/DfV_vdIAEWC, DeqjMhesFC_, De8ilOqxQ0K, DfXibz8phXx, DfY5JNzR4L-; several posts on Facebook bryce.wagner.581), plus a TikTok, "Bible Swipe app – Stop doomscrolling and start Bible scrolling" (tiktok.com/@bwag_fit48/video/7703029705443724575).
- His TikTok has posted 3–5 "Real #jesus #bible" short videos a day recently, mostly 5K–20K views, occasionally topping 100K (TikHub, 10-28 to 11-05). A user comment also reads "I saw a video last night about this and then I actually searched it up" (US App Store review).
- Self-made / hired creators posting organic videos, confirmed but app not named: the developer 09-10 says 45 TikTok videos have 3.8M views in total, averaging 2 per day, with the top video out-viewing the bottom 24 combined; 09-17 says they are "hiring others to post organic videos."
- Meta ads, per the developer: 09-02 "just started running the organic videos as Meta ads," 09-17 "early meta ads signs are looking very interesting." Our metaads database doesn't track BibleSwipe's Page; not finding it doesn't mean it isn't running ads.
- Store search: the name stuffs in the trending term "Stop Doomscrolling"; search volume for doomscroll / bible scroll was driven up by the leader, and BibleSwipe is riding that wave (inferred).
4. Why it "works" (it's only a small run)
- Borrows a proven, hot category: Scroll The Bible showed that swapping the short-video swipe for scripture swiping can make money (estimated $2M/month). BibleSwipe copies the concept and payment structure (soft paywall, annual subscription, free trial), so starting risk is low.
- Has ready-made distribution: a long-term tie to a faith creator with a million followers, who promotes two of the developer's apps at once (Prayrise → BibleSwipe). The material is one-line Reels like "stop scrolling your phone, scroll the Bible," which match the product pitch exactly.
- Low bar for small-market charts: entering the Books Top Grossing charts in Cyprus, Hungary, Poland, Austria and similar markets only means a few scattered subscribers there; in the US it only reached #151 on Top Free.
- The ceiling is clear: if the numbers being shown are BibleSwipe's, MRR plateaus around $1.3K where new subscribers equal churn. Store reviews also complain the paywall keeps malfunctioning (looping, prices not showing) and that users "don't want one more subscription."
5. Differentiation
Almost none. Compared with Scroll The Bible, BibleSwipe only adds small features like a "screen time comparison," is English-only, is 7 months later, and rates 1% of the rival's score. Whatever volume it gets comes from distribution (creator tie-in + short video + Meta ads), not from a different product.
6. Visibility
- BibleSwipe itself: few people know about it yet. No media or big accounts have written about it, and it has no TrustMRR page; the developer posted MRR on X (590 followers) for an unnamed app.
- The category it sits in: widely discussed and crowded (Scroll The Bible's $2M/month has circulated on X, LinkedIn and Heartlander News; "hit app teardown" accounts like César Álvarez have also written about it).
7. What to borrow
- The "studio + niche creator" playbook: a niche creator with 1M followers is tied long-term and rotates promotion of several apps from the same developer, posting several times a day with the same "Download X on App Store" voiceover template, then running the best-performing organic material as Meta ads.
- The idea of "taking an existing bad habit and changing the content" (short-video scrolling → scrolling scripture / books / vocabulary) can be copied to other niches and languages, but the Bible slot is already late. Look for languages or religions no one has covered yet (Spanish, Portuguese, Islamic Quran scroll apps, etc.; gap size not verified).
- By publicly posting "Day N" numbers, the developer also generates attention for themselves and attracts partnerships.
8. Uncertain
- Whether the MRR the developer posted corresponds to BibleSwipe or Prayrise is unverified.
- Whether Bryce Wagner works on revenue share, a one-time purchase, or equity is unverified (his bio says "Building," which suggests a revenue share or equity).
- How much was spent on Meta ads, and whether it's still running, is not tracked in our database.
- Whether there's an Android version: not found.
