Before walking into a gold shop, Saudi women open an app that answers one question: "Is this labor charge too expensive?"
What it is An Arabic gold labor-charge calculator. You enter the total price quoted by the gold shop, the weight, and the style. It calculates how much of the price is labor, whether that's expensive compared to the local gold market, and how much to haggle down. It charges a subscription.
Why it took off Saudi women buy a lot of gold jewelry, but shops only quote a total price and nobody explains the labor part. The app recruited a group of female TikTok creators to post "work it out at the gold shop in one minute" videos, each with a discount code, and paired them with TikTok ads. Finance category chart spots in the Gulf have a low bar, so a few dozen weekly subscriptions can land it in the top 20.
BHow you could follow Don't copy it in Saudi Arabia. Five or six players are already there. Move to markets where people buy gold heavily, such as the UAE, Kuwait, Egypt, Turkey, or Southeast Asia. First, personally survey gold markets to set labor-charge benchmarks, then promote through local female micro-influencers with exclusive codes, and gate only the "is it expensive, how much to haggle" answers behind the paywall.

A Saudi indie developer built "دمغة" (Damgha, the purity stamp on gold jewelry). It launched in July 18, climbed to #7 on the Saudi App Store Finance Top Grossing chart in November 1, and was at #14 in November 6. Almost everything above it was brokerage and market apps like TradingView and Webull. It was not the first gold labor-charge calculator; at least five or six have appeared in Saudi Arabia this year. It stood out in two ways: a labor-charge benchmark built by city, gathered from its own gold market visits, and exclusive discount codes held by a group of female TikTok creators.
A video with 280k views
In 2026 Sep 2, Saudi TikTok user @thameen_0 posted a video captioned "تطبيق دمغه يفك ازمه لطريقة حساب الذهب والمصنعية" (the Damgah app solves the headache of how gold and craftsmanship fees are calculated), followed by "استخدموا كود الخصم THAMEEN" (use discount code THAMEEN). By Nov 6 the video had 283k plays and 9,223 likes (TikTok, 11-06).
Over the following weeks, the same kind of video appeared one after another on Saudi women's accounts. @go0old55 posted in August 26: "حابة تبيعين ذهبك ومو عارفة كم بيجيب لك؟" (Want to sell your gold but don't know how much it's worth?), with code GOLD30, and another said "مهم لكل بنت" (every girl needs this). @hanin7.7 posted in September 10 with 65k views. @iyfy posted in September 14: "خلّيه معك وقت الشراء والبيع" (keep it with you when buying and selling). @mu__alm posted in September 24 with 69k views and code DAMGHA for 30% off. Each one tagged the app's official account.
What it actually is
When buying gold jewelry in Saudi Arabia, shops usually quote a single total price including tax. That total has two parts: the gold content, priced at the day's gold rate and easy for anyone to check, and "المصنعية", the labor charge plus shop margin, which nobody knows the fair amount of. For bangles and bridal sets (شبكة), that can be thousands to tens of thousands of riyals, and a small difference in labor means hundreds.
Damgha separates out that second part:
- Enter total price, weight, karat, category (bangle, necklace, set, ring, bar), and origin (Saudi, Gulf, Turkey, India, Italy). It subtracts VAT and the gold value, calculates the actual labor charge, and gives a verdict: competitive, fair, compare prices, or high, plus how much to haggle off.
- Shopping comparison: record each shop's quote and it ranks the cheapest. The store page copy reads "سجّلي عروض المحلات وأنت تلفّين بالسوق" (record shop offers as you walk around the market). The whole listing speaks directly to women in colloquial Gulf Arabic.
- Gold sell-back valuation: today's reasonable buyback price range, so you can check the shop's offer on the spot.
- Zakat calculator, comparing against the 85-gram legal threshold, "always free".
- The official site says it covers 40 gold markets across 20 cities, such as the Hijab market in Riyadh.
The free tier is broad: live gold prices, gold value, total labor charge, zakat, and a personal gold wallet. The subscription covers the features that let you judge: whether the per-gram labor is expensive compared with the market, shop price comparisons, how much the shop earns, and the suggested haggle amount. Several price tiers coexist in the Saudi store: weekly 6.99 or 9.99 riyals, six-month 20.99 or 29.99, annual 24.99, 34.99, and 49.99 (App Store Saudi storefront, 11-06). Multiple tiers likely reflect pricing set for different discount codes and channels (inference).
One point is worth noting. The store page has a dedicated section, "عدل مع الطرفين" (fair to both sides): a high labor charge isn't necessarily a scam, since fine craftsmanship and imported pieces are expensive by nature, and "our goal is to help you know what you're paying for, not to accuse anyone." Some competitors take a "expose the gold shops" tone. This stance is easier for ordinary people to accept and leaves room to partner with shops later.
How it took off
Creator-exclusive codes are the main engine. The videos above make up the bulk of it: Saudi women's accounts, scenes of buying and selling gold, each with its own code (THAMEEN, GOLD30, DAMGHA). The official account @damghasa has only 649 followers and 25 posts, so it is not a traffic source in itself. The October update notes specifically mention "improved subscription restore and discount codes", and the version before that mentions "discount and invite codes before purchase". Discount codes are the conversion switch for this business.
TikTok performance ads are also running. The download buttons on the website damgha-ksa.com carry ct=tiktok-landing in the Apple link and utm_source=tiktok&utm_medium=cpc in the Google Play link, which means TikTok ad → landing page → store. How much was spent is not visible.
The name itself is a search term. 「دمغة الذهب」 (gold hallmark) is a phrase Saudis already search when buying gold. Search 「تطبيق دمغة الذهب」 and it's the first result, the official site. How much organic traffic it gets is unknown (inferred).
Beyond that, X shows no mention of it in the last four months, and no media outlet has written about it. The only people who know it are the women who've seen these few TikTok videos.
The money comes in like this: see a video → download → use the free gold price and zakat tools day to day → one day, standing at a jewelry counter wondering 「is this too expensive?」, hit the paywall → use a creator's code for a weekly subscription. The developer's reply to a one-star review shows the math: 「مصنعية مرتفعة وحدة تكلّف مئات الريالات، والاشتراك بسعر رمزي」(a high labor fee costs hundreds of riyals, the subscription is a symbolic price) (App Store Saudi storefront, reply from 10-04's developer).
How much it earns
Not much, but enough for one person. Saudi has only 20 ratings, with just 2 more added since Oct 28, yet its Top Grossing rank in Finance has held steady at #18,11-01, #7,11-06, #14, within the top 20:10-28. Qatar's Finance Top Grossing sits between #19 and #48, and Bahrain has charted since Nov 3, at #21 to #37 (App Store charts, 10-28 to 11-06).
This few ratings and this high a rank means the Gulf Finance Top Grossing chart has a low bar. A few dozen weekly subscriptions can push you into the top 20. Rough math: tens to a hundred-plus dollars a day in revenue (estimate). The website claims 「+10,000 downloads」 across iOS and Android combined. Can't verify that.
The reviews show the paywall is both revenue and friction. Sep 13 five-star: 「ينفع لأي وحدة مالها خلق تحسب في محلات الذهب」 (useful for any woman who can't be bothered to do the math at the gold shop). Sep 20 one-star: 「يحتاج اشتراك بمبلغ عالي مقارنه بالخدمه」 (needs a subscription, and it's too expensive for what it does). Nov 2 five-star asks for something: 「ودي تخلون تجربة مجانية」 (I'd like a free trial, that's how we got motivated to subscribe).
It's not the first, and others are competing
This year, Saudi has a flood of 「gold labor fee calculators」 (App Store Saudi storefront, 11-06):
| Product | Launched | Saudi ratings | Saudi Finance Top Grossing | vs. Damgha | |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Shabkah - حاسبة مصنعية الذهب | 2026-03 | 27 | Not charted | Same concept, but the tone is 「exposing the gold shops」; no creator spending spotted | |
| Gold Calculator \ | حاسبة الذهب | 2026-03 | 189, +11 in the last 7 days | #26 | Earlier, with 9 times as many ratings; English-first, aimed at the whole Gulf, no market-by-market price benchmarks |
| ذهبي - Gold Price Live | 2026-06 | 19, +7 in the last 7 days | #52 | Nearly identical features, also gives 「good / fair / high」 verdicts and a starting point for haggling | |
| Gold Price & Making Charge | 2026-06 | 2 | Not charted | Only reverse-calculates the labor fee | |
| حاسبة الذهب اسعار الذهب اليوم | 2026-09 | 2 | #63 (#20 in Qatar) | Gold price plus calculator | |
| دمغة | 2026-07 | 20 | #14 | Benchmarks by city and gold market, plus creator codes |
Beyond these, there are older gold price apps (Asaar Plus, 1,318 Saudi ratings), web calculators like gold.sa, and digital gold products like SabikaGold backed by Rajhi Bank. But none of them answer 「is this expensive?」
So this isn't an empty market. Damgha entered four months late with nearly the same features as ذهبي. What sets it apart is two things. First, the labor-fee benchmark split by category, origin, city, and gold market. The developer says it came from 「زيارات فعلية للمحلات」(actual visits to shops), and copying the description can't copy the data. Second, it really ran TikTok ads, and Shabkah, which got there first, shows no sign of paid promotion.
If it were you
Verdict: Worth trying, but don't do it in Saudi. Saudi already has five or six nearly identical apps, and the leaders are spending on ads. What's worth borrowing is the model itself: in a large offline purchase, break out the most opaque piece and tell people whether the price is fair, with the paywall placed right where they're about to pay. The model can move to other countries and other categories, but the ceiling is low, and you'll have to gather the data yourself.
Who it suits: Solo indie devs or two-or-three-person teams who speak the language of a country where women buy gold often and can check prices at gold markets in person, and who are willing to split revenue per code with local micro-creators.
Who it doesn't suit: Anyone wanting a scalable product (this is a business of tens to a hundred-plus dollars a day). Anyone unwilling to visit shops in person and who just wants to copy a formula (then you're the seventh Shabkah). Anyone who depends on short-video distribution or expects App Store search to bring organic growth.
How to do it:
- Change countries. The Gulf states of UAE, Kuwait, and Oman have far less competition for this kind of app. Damgha ranks only #40 to #145 in the UAE. Beyond that, Egypt, Turkey, Iraq, Malaysia, Indonesia, India, and Pakistan are all places where buying gold jewelry is common and shop pricing is opaque. First, count how many 「labor fee calculators」 are in the top 100 of each country's App Store Finance Top Grossing chart. Enter only where there are none.
- The first step is data collection: pick the two or three biggest gold markets in the target country, record labor fees per gram across dozens of shops by category and origin, and build a baseline for 「what this price means in this market.」 That's your whole difference from a formula calculator.
- Give the free tier plenty: gold price, bullion value, zakat or local religious and holiday needs. Charge only for judgment: is it fair, how much to haggle, which shop to go to. Offer weekly and annual subscriptions, and offer a free trial from the start. Saudi users have already asked for one in reviews.
- Write copy in local colloquial Arabic, speaking to women, with a stance of 「fair to both sides.」 Don't position yourself against the gold shops.
- Changing categories also works: used cars, phone recycling, renovation quotes, wedding dress rentals, anything with a big one-time offline purchase where the price is opaque and the market rate depends on who you know.
How to acquire users: Copy it. Find ten or so local women's lifestyle and shopping accounts with a few thousand to a few hundred thousand followers, give each a personal code, and split revenue by code. The video shows the moment 「I pulled out my phone in the gold shop and calculated, and the shop had overcharged.」 Build the official site as a landing page for TikTok ads, with channel parameters on every link so you can tell which creator and which ad drove each subscription. Name the app the word people already search when they buy gold.
When to move: No rush, but the Gulf is filling up. Saudi saw five or six of these appear between March and September, and expanding to other Gulf states is only a matter of time. If you're going to do it, launch and lock in creators before the next gold-buying peak around Ramadan and Eid next year.
Signs that would mean you read it wrong:
- Damgha fell out of the Saudi Finance Top Grossing top 50 at the end of the year, and it still has only a couple dozen ratings. That means its rank was pushed up by ad spend, and it drops once the spending stops. This business can't support paid acquisition.
- The Saudi competitors have all moved to 「market-by-market benchmarks.」 Data is no longer a moat; all that's left is ad spend, and at that point followers have no edge.
- You spend two weeks visiting shops in the target country and find labor fees barely vary, or shops already post clear prices. Then that country doesn't need this tool. Move on.
- Conversely, if Damgha climbs into the top 20 in the UAE and Qatar and its ratings pass a few hundred, the model works better than I thought, and the other Gulf countries should move quickly.

1. What it is
A tool for women buying gold jewelry at gold shops in Saudi Arabia (and the Gulf more broadly). Enter the shop's quoted total including tax, weight in grams, karat, category (bangles بنجرة, necklaces, sets, rings, bars), and origin (Saudi / Gulf / Turkey / India / Italy). The app separates the bullion value from the labor fee plus shop margin (المصنعية), then compares against benchmarks by category, origin, city, and gold market (the website says it covers 20 cities and 40 gold markets, such as 「Riyadh · Hijab Market」) and gives a verdict: competitive / fair / compare prices / high, with a suggested haggling amount. There is also shop-by-shop price comparison, a reasonable buyback price range when selling, gem weight deduction, separate judgment for used pieces (for used items, only the shop markup is assessed), and zakat (زكاة) calculation. Free vs. paid split (official site damgha-ksa.com): live gold price, bullion value, total labor fee, zakat, personal gold jewelry wallet, and price alerts are free. The per-gram labor fee verdict against market rates, shop comparison, margin breakdown, reasonable resale range, and suggested haggling amount require a subscription.
2. Data

| self-reported downloads on the official site | "+10,000 downloads" (iOS + Android combined, can't be verified) | damgha-ksa.com |
Saudi 11-06 Finance Top Grossing #14, ranked above mostly brokerage and market apps like TradingView, Sahm, Investing.com, and Webull. Among same-day gold tools, Gold Calculator | حاسبة الذهب (#26) and ذهبي (#52) rank below it. Few ratings but high grossing rank: either the Saudi Finance grossing chart has a low bar, or its weekly subscription is cheap and cash flows fast. Actual revenue is unverified; my estimate is tens to a hundred-plus dollars a day, which is inference.
3. Competitors (a wave of "making-charge calculators" appeared in Saudi Arabia in 2026)
| Competitors | Platform | Launched | Scale (2026-11-06) | How it differs from Damgha | |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Gold Calculator \ | حاسبة الذهب(Saud Alsaeed) | iOS | 2026-03-16 | Saudi 189 ratings, +7 in the last 11 days; Saudi Finance Top Grossing #26 | Launched earlier with 9x more ratings. Selling points: live gold prices, calculator, bargaining tool. Mostly English, targets the whole Gulf. No city or market-level benchmarks, and not written specifically for women. |
| Shabkah - حاسبة مصنعية الذهب(Alwaleed Almajlad) | iOS | 2026-03-14 | 27 ratings (4.2), not on any chart now | Nearly the same concept ("is the real making charge revealed, is the price fair?"), but the tone leans toward exposing jewelers. Damgha explicitly says it is "not against jewelers" and breaks data down by market. No influencer promotion seen for Shabkah. | |
| ذهبي - Gold Price Live(Setah Khalid) | iOS | 2026-06-03 | 19 ratings, +7 in the last 7 days; Saudi Finance Top Grossing #52 | Nearly identical features (breaks down gold / making charge / VAT / profit, gives good/fair/high verdicts, Pro version gives a bargaining starting point), launched a month and a half before Damgha. | |
| Gold Price & Making Charge(Loai Aldaghma) | iOS | 2026-06-10 | 2 ratings | Only reverse-calculates the labor fee | |
| حاسبة الذهب اسعار الذهب اليوم(Mohamed Amiri) | iOS | 2026-09-07 | Saudi 2 ratings; Saudi Finance Top Grossing #63, Qatar #20 | Focused on gold price + calculator, a follower | |
| Gold Price Today - Asaar Plus(Islam Tawfik) | iOS | 2025-02-04 | Saudi 1318 ratings; Saudi Top Grossing #82, Qatar #9 | Long-running general gold price / exchange rate app, doesn't judge making charges | |
| eDahab, Gold+, Kitco and other gold price apps | iOS / Android | 2016–2023 | Hundreds to thousands of ratings | Gold price only | |
| Web calculators such as gold.sa, saudigoldprice.com, engazcompany.com | Web | Already around | SEO traffic | Applies a formula only, doesn't judge whether a price is high, no market benchmark | |
| Digital gold such as GrowK, SabikaGold (backed by Rajhi Bank), MGW | iOS / Android | 2023– | Raised funding | Sells gold itself, doesn't help people shop at jewelers |
Bottom line: Damgha is not the first in this space. The earliest were Shabkah and Gold Calculator in March 2026, which is 4 months earlier. Saudi has at least 5 similar apps. It beat earlier competitors on grossing rank, mainly because of distribution, and partly because of product polish (see below).
4. Growth levers (evidence)
- TikTok women influencers + exclusive discount codes (confirmed, main channel): Searching "تطبيق دمغة" on TikHub turns up a batch of Saudi women influencers' recommendation videos, all tagging @دمغة and carrying exclusive codes:
- @thameen_0 (2026-09-02) 283k views, 9.2k likes, "استخدموا كود الخصم THAMEEN";
- @hanin7.7 (09-10) 65k views; @s_s1412s (08-30) 52k; @iyfy (09-14) 30k; @go0old55 (08-26) 25k, "مهم لكل بنت";
- Official account @damghasa: 649 followers, 25 posts, has shared discount codes GOLD30 (08-24) and DAMGHA (10-3.11M views). The October app update notes specifically mention "improved subscription restore and discount codes," showing codes are a core conversion tool. The store's multiple price tiers (weekly 6.99 / 9.99, annual 24.99 / 34.99 / 49.99) likely correspond to different codes or channel prices.
- TikTok paid ads (confirmed running, scale unknown): The official site's download button links to
apps.apple.com/app/id6791582254?ct=tiktok-landing, and the Google Play link carriesutm_source=tiktok&utm_medium=cpc&utm_campaign=landing. That is the path TikTok performance ad → landing page → store. Our TikTok ad library only covers ads running in Europe, so Gulf ads don't show up and spend is unknown. - Official site SEO / brand search: Searching "تطبيق دمغة الذهب" puts the official site first. The brand name "دمغة" (the purity stamp on gold jewelry) is itself a high-frequency gold search term, so it likely picks up organic traffic from "دمغة الذهب" queries and store search (inference).
- Store search: Competitors are numerous for terms like "حاسبة مصنعية الذهب". On Apple's "customers also bought," similar apps such as ذهبي and حاسبة الذهب appear next to each other, giving some cross-traffic (weak evidence).
- X / Reddit / media: Searching the local x-radar corpus for "دمغة 应用" and "damgha" returns 120 posts in the last 0 days; no media coverage found.
How the money comes back: influencer videos push people toward buying gold. Users download, use the free gold price and zakat features, then hit the paywall when they need to judge whether a specific price is high, and subscribe with the influencer's discount code, either weekly or annual. A single gold purchase runs to thousands of riyals, so a SAR 7–35 subscription is easy to justify in users' eyes. This is also the line the developer uses in replies to bad reviews: "One excessive making charge can cost hundreds of riyals; the subscription is a token price."
5. Why it works
- Real pain, big money, happens every day: Saudi women buy gold jewelry often (bangles, bridal sets for weddings), gold prices have stayed high and volatile for 2025–2026 years, and shops quote only the total, not the making charge separately. There's a lot of "how to calculate making charges" content on TikTok (for example, @gold.palace10's making-charge video has 250k views, @ab_dula2's has 190k), showing demand already exists in organic traffic.
- Narrower and more precise positioning than competitors: Uses Gulf colloquial Arabic and speaks to women directly ("أدخلي / تلفّين"). The benchmark by category × origin × city × market (40 markets) is data the developer collected by visiting shops (he mentioned this in bad-review replies), while most competitors only give formulas. Details like gemstone weight deductions and separate judgments for used pieces also follow what actually happens in shops.
- Right distribution choice: The buying decision chain for gold runs through women influencers on TikTok. Damgha combines "influencer exclusive codes + TikTok CPC." The earlier Shabkah had only 27 ratings and is not on any chart now, and no similar paid push was visible.
- Wide free tier, paywall placed at the moment of decision: Gold prices, zakat, and total making charges are free, so users stay. "Is this expensive / how much should I bargain" is paid, which lands exactly at the moment of paying. The unit price is low, there's a weekly subscription, and impulse conversion is strong.
- Low bar on the charts: The Finance Top Grossing charts in Saudi Arabia, Qatar, and Bahrain have a low threshold, so a small number of subscriptions can reach the top 20. Hence "20 ratings + grossing #7–18" is not a contradiction.
VI. Differentiation
Not "the first to do it," but "the most localized with the most proactive distribution": city/market-level making charge benchmarks, a neutral stance of "not against jewelers" (which also makes future partnerships easier), colloquial copy aimed at women, and TikTok influencer discount codes. The features themselves have little moat; ذهبي's description is nearly identical. The real separation comes from ad execution and that market benchmark data. So it broke out mainly through distribution, with differentiation playing a supporting role.
7. Visibility
Few people know about it yet: revenue is not public, there's no media coverage, and 0 posts on X. There are only a few influencer videos in the Saudi TikTok women's shopping circle, the top one with 280k views. But the space is already crowded, with at least 5 similar Saudi apps, both before and after it.
VIII. Takeaways
- Pick the narrow slice of high-ticket offline transactions where information is asymmetric (making charges, repair quotes, used cars, renovation quotes) and build a "is this price fair" judge, with the paywall placed at the moment of decision.
- Collect your own market benchmark data (by city, market, category). This is the part competitors can't copy.
- Low-bar grossing charts in a small language and small countries: in the Gulf Finance Top Grossing charts, a few dozen subscriptions can reach the top 20.
- Channel mix: TikTok women influencer exclusive codes (settled per code) + TikTok CPC landing pages + free religion-driven features (zakat) to drive retention.
9. Uncertain
- Actual revenue and subscriber count (what grossing ranks #7–18 correspond to is not calibrated);
- The official site's "+10,000 downloads" cannot be verified;
- TikTok ad spend, and whether influencers are paid on CPS or a flat fee;
- Android install numbers (not captured from the Google Play page);
- Whether the multiple price tiers are A/B tests or correspond to different discount codes;
- The US store launch date shows 08-18, which doesn't match the Saudi store's 07-18; reason unknown.
