A Japanese indie dev with "0 funding": one tweet sent the app to #3 in the travel chart, and one "sorry" post pulled the ranking back

What it is A Japanese saving app: when you see a place you want to visit on Instagram, TikTok, Tabelog, or Google Maps, you save it in a few seconds, view it on a map, and plan the schedule with friends. Once you've saved 50 items, it costs ¥380 a month.

Why it took off The developer writes a hook tweet on X for every new app and major update (the launch tweet got 166k views, the "sorry it evolved too far" tweet 68.6k views), and the apps under the same account cross-promote each other. On top of that, the pay-after-you-save-enough model and a low bar in the Japan travel category's Top Grossing chart meant a few dozen subscriptions were enough to reach the top 50.

CHow you could follow Don't enter this category in Japan: there are already more than twenty similar apps. What's worth borrowing is the playbook: one X account driving a set of small apps, each update written as an emotional hook tweet, a paywall set by number of saves, and a subscription in a low-barrier category.

Grade C: the Japanese niche is already packed and anyone can copy the features. It leads because of the developer's X repost network, which followers can't take. Revenue is also only in the tens of thousands of yen a month. The playbook is worth learning; the product isn't worth copying. What's going around in small circles

いこストック is a "places I want to go" saving app by the Japanese indie developer technobibi. It launched in July 31, a tweet got 166k views the next day, and by the third day it reached #3 in the Japan App Store travel category. The category has more than twenty nearly identical apps, so its features aren't unique. It took off because of the developer's publishing skill in the Japanese X "個人開発" (indie dev) community, and a playbook of "post a hook tweet every time a new app launches or a big update ships."

"Sorry, I evolved it too far"

On 2026 Nov 5, @techno_bibi posted on X: "皆さんごめんなさい。おでかけ計画アプリを進化させすぎました🥺" (Sorry everyone, I evolved the trip-planning app too far). The follow-up explains: it started as a way to gather scattered social links onto a map, and now you can even make a travel itinerary booklet (旅のしおり) with friends. The post got 68.6k views and 1662 likes (X, 11-06 reading).

The next day, いこストック climbed from #62 back to #42 in the Japan App Store travel Top Grossing chart, with 3 new ratings that day, its biggest day that week (Japan App Store, 11-05 to 11-06). That same day the developer added: "個人開発だと企業のように毎日数百万も広告出すわけにいかないよね。資金0だと定期的にアプデして満足してもらいつつ、告知流すくらいしか戦う方法ない" (As an indie dev you can't spend millions on ads every day like a company does. With 0 in funding, the only ways to compete are shipping regular updates that keep users happy and posting announcements).

What it is

Young people in Japan find places through Instagram, TikTok, Tabelog, and Google Maps. They tap save on whatever they want to visit, and then the "places I want to go" end up scattered across four or five apps, and they can't find them when they need them. いこストック solves exactly that:

  • Save from the share menu: on Instagram, TikTok, Tabelog, Google Maps, or hotel websites, pick it from Share, the link is read in automatically, add a note, and it's saved. The launch tweet said it takes "about 5 seconds."
  • See it on a map: saved places appear as pins, so you can see which "want to go" spots are nearby at a glance. Filter by tags like "Tokyo" or "coffee."
  • Plan together: いこボード lets friends and couples place candidate spots into morning, afternoon, and evening slots. In November, the 3.1.0 update added collaborative editing for the 旅のしおり. You can invite friends without requiring them to sign up or log in first.
  • It works across iOS and Android (Android launched in Sep 22) and supports 13 languages.

The monetization hinges on hoarding: you can save 50 items and 10 plans for free. Beyond that it's ¥380 a month (pricing on the official site).

Where users come from

The launch tweet. The Aug 1 launch tweet opened with a pain-point question: "Instagram、食べログ、Googleマップ…『行きたい』があちこちに散らばってませんか?🤔" (Are your "want to go" places scattered everywhere?). It was followed by three lines of features, a line saying "save in about 5 seconds," and a line saying "free is enough." It got 166k views, 708 likes, and 635 bookmarks (X, read as of 11-06). Bookmarks close to likes suggest many people saw it and thought "I'll save this to install later." Two days later he posted "1 days since launch, #3 in the App Store travel category," which got 19k views. His X bio also claims he once hit #1 in travel. Which day and which chart that was can't be verified.

Mutual promotion in the indie dev circle. @indieappjp, which introduces indie dev apps daily, featured it and reposted the Android release. アプリ大学 wrote a recommendation in October. The developer also said he wants to be a "quote-repost craftsman," quoting and reposting fellow developers. The review site app-liv.jp published a review. User reviews show where people came from: "Xを拝見して入れてみました" (I saw it on X and installed it, 11-04).

This account was created in March 2025 and has 4547 followers. The developer says he only started doing social media marketing this year. It's not built on an old following. It comes from a repost network built over more than a year in this circle, plus a fixed format for every post: "a pain-point question + animated screenshot + free." There are no signs of paid advertising.

Where the money comes from

Downloads are tiny. The Japan store has 75 ratings, only 8 more since Oct 28 (App Store, 11-06). On Oct 31 the dev said "1200 downloads on iOS", but it's unclear whether that's a lifetime total or a spike day from a sister app. On Google Play it shows 100+.

But it charts. In the Japan Travel category Top Grossing it hit #64 on Oct 28, #52 on Nov 4, and #42 on Nov 6. The Japan Travel Top Grossing bar is low: iko (106 ratings), a similar app, has peaked at #21. A few dozen monthly subscribers probably gets it into the top 50, which puts monthly revenue in the tens of thousands of yen (my estimate, no public revenue figure).

The reviews make the paywall logic clear. On Oct 31 a five-star review said: 「あっという間に無料枠を埋めてしまったので、サブスクしました」 (I filled the free quota so fast I subscribed). On Nov 4: 「ストック溢れたらサブスクしたい」 (I'd subscribe once my stock overflows). The more people save, the harder it is to leave, and the moment they hit the 50-item limit is the paywall. Some want a one-time purchase instead: 「機能制限版でも買い切りが出たら良いのに」 (9-25).

Product weak spots

  • The core experience is unstable. On Sep 20 a two-star review said that after an update, sharing from Google Maps no longer auto-fills the shop name and address, leaving only a link.
  • Users are asking for plenty more: a phone number field (to enter into car navigation), itinerary export to PDF, list export to CSV, and exact times.
  • A review of the free version mentioned "malicious scam ads" (10-31).

Who's competing

This niche is already crowded in Japan. There are more than twenty similar indie apps released in the last 2026 years (App Store Japan, 11-06):

ProductLaunchedJapan ratingvs いこストック
Wanderlog2019-08315Big global product, proper trip planning, not focused on quick saves from social media
マイ地図2023-12270Personal visited / want-to-go map, no multi-person planning
iko 共有マップでデート計画2024-01106Closest rival: saves maps, couples sharing, AI planning. Peaked at #21 in its category
Whimo2026-05106Almost the same positioning: "save places you want to go from social media and share them". Peaked at #46 in its category
AnaGo - AI行きたいところリスト2026-0944Sells AI. Ratings over the last 7 days growing faster than it
ココイコ!, PinPin, Toco, たべピン…2025-12~2026-0610–33Smaller similar apps
SpotPocket, Postlog, PickGo, いきたいマップ…2026-07~100–3Similar features, barely took off

There are also big-company built-ins: Google Maps saved lists, Instagram saves, Tabelog saves. They each store things in their own silo, with no cross-app aggregation and no multi-person schedule planning. That gap is what this whole cluster of small apps shares.

いこストック ranks fifth on rating count among its peers, not far from iko or Whimo, and nowhere near dominant. The peers with 0 to 3 ratings are about as functional; what they lack is promotion.

If it were you

Verdict: Worth learning from, but the product itself isn't worth copying. More than twenty people in Japan are building this niche, anyone can copy the features, and it's pulling ahead on the developer's X retweet network, which you can't take. What's worth borrowing is the playbook: one account pushes a string of small apps, every new launch and major update gets a hook post, and you go for subscriptions in low-barrier categories.

Who it's for: Indie devs who already have some presence in a language's developer community or on X, plan to ship several small tool apps, and can accept a few hundred dollars a month per app, compounding through volume.

Who it's not for: Anyone wanting a travel product that can grow big (Google Maps can add cross-app aggregation at any time). Anyone without their own social accounts who expects organic App Store search to carry them (you'd be the twentieth zero-review clone). Anyone unwilling to post and ship updates every month.

How to do it:

  • If you still want this category, go elsewhere: search the target country's App Store Travel category for terms like "places I want to go / saves / map" and count how many indie-made competitors there are. Young audiences in Korea (Instagram plus Naver Maps), Taiwan and Southeast Asia are also finding places on Instagram and TikTok, so start there.
  • Do one thing extremely fast: save from a shared menu in a single action, done in seconds, with the shop name and address auto-filled correctly. That's exactly where いこストック's current bad reviews come from.
  • Monetize the way it does: cap free saves by count without locking features, and offer monthly and one-time purchase from day one, since reviews already show people asking for the latter.
  • Ship what users explicitly asked for first: phone numbers, export, exact times. Each one becomes material for an update post.
  • The better move is applying this playbook to your own small app, travel or not: shopping lists, reading logs, expense tracking are all directions it's already being copied into.

How to get users: Copy it. Open the launch post with a pain-point question, attach a demo GIF, and state clearly "done in seconds" and "free is enough". If you chart, post a ranking screenshot. Write an emotional post for every major update (something like "sorry, I evolved too far"). When a new app launches, mention the older one so they cross-promote. In between, quote-tweet peers often to build a circle that will boost you back, then find local Japanese indie-app recommender accounts that feature new apps daily.

When it's too late: This category in Japan is already past its window. The playbook itself has no deadline, but building the accounts takes months, so the earlier you start the better.

Signs that would mean you read it wrong:

  1. いこストック dropped out of the top 100 in Top Grossing over a few weeks with no posts. That suggests its rankings were all propped up by tweets, and the playbook's marginal effect is smaller than it looks.
  2. Its 13 languages and Android version started gaining traction outside Japan (ratings in Taiwan and Korea reached dozens to hundreds). That shows the product can travel across markets, so trying this category in another market is worth a serious look.
  3. If Google Maps or Instagram ships "save a place from any app, plan multi-person itineraries", this cluster's gap closes. Don't enter.
  4. The developer's third and fourth apps also climbed category charts on the same posts. That suggests the matrix playbook really is replicable and worth following closely.

Why ikostock (いこストック, English name PlacePouch) broke through

  • App Store: apps.apple.com/app/id6791623306, developer technobibi (indie dev, X @techno_bibi), Travel category, listed 2026-07-31, iOS 3.1.0 (2026-11-04)

Bottom line

In a Japanese niche crowded with indie devs ("save the places you saw on SNS to a map"), it isn't unique on product. It broke through because the developer is good at launching and amplifying on Japan's X indie-dev circle: the launch tweet got 166k views, and by day 1 after release it hit #3 in Travel. Afterward, the same account posted a hook tweet with every new app and major update, repeatedly pulling rankings back up. Download volume is small (only 75 ratings), but the "free 50-item cap + ¥380/month" converted users who hoard places into subscribers, and the Japan Travel Top Grossing bar is low, so it reached #42.

  • Apple lookup (jp, 2026-11-06): 77 ratings, average 4.10.
  • Rating growth is very low (7 days, +6), consistent with small downloads; its Top Grossing category rank keeps bouncing between #40 and #190, meaning a small group of stable paying subscribers. The Japan Travel Top Grossing bar is very low: iko (106 ratings) has peaked at #21 in category charts, Whimo (106 ratings) 46, Wanderlog 53 (our app_profile library, jp).
  • The developer says: "いこストック also got 1200 downloads on iOS" (2026-10-31, x.com/techno_bibi/status/2116623785583669338). It sits right next to the entry "ショッピングリズム 24 hours iOS about 7000 downloads," so these 1200 are most likely that day's volume carried over from the sister app (inferred, not verified whether it's cumulative or single-day).
  • Android: Play page shows 100+ downloads; our googleplay library logs 472 installs (2026-11-05), nearly negligible.

2. Competitors: this niche in Japan is already packed

Searching the appstore library for jp-store names like 「行きたい」, there are over twenty indie-dev apps in this category listed in 2026 years, with these rating counts (app_snapshot, 2026-11-06, jp):

Big-company features––Google Maps "save / share lists", Instagram saves / maps, Tabelog saves, Apple Maps guides: all let you save places, but each lives in its own app, with no cross-platform aggregation and no multi-person itinerary planning

Verdict: there is no empty market. いこストック sits in the top tier of indie-dev competition in this niche (rating count rank #5), but it isn't far from iko / Whimo and isn't dominant.

3. How it differs from others

From the website, store description and reviews, its specific differences:

  1. Very fast URL saving from the share menu: choose it from Instagram / TikTok / Tabelog / Google Maps / hotel sites' share sheet, the URL is read automatically, add a one-line note and it's saved; the launch tweet says "about 5 seconds." Review: 「食べログのページを共有ボタンからアプリ開くだけで爆速で登録できる神アプリ」(2026-09-25). But one 2-star review says that after an update, sharing from Google Maps no longer auto-fills the store name and address (2026-09-20), showing this core experience isn't stable yet.
  2. From saving all the way to planning trips together: いこボード (multiple people drag candidates into a morning / afternoon / evening schedule) → 3.1.0's 「旅のしおり」 (co-edited timetable and notes). You can invite friends without logging in first (starts with an anonymous ID).
  3. iOS × Android interoperability + 13 languages: the Android version was explicitly requested by users (@hnars0024: 「まじでこれのAndroid版待ってる」).
  4. Monetization hinges on hoarding: free plan saves 50 places / 10 plans; going over costs ¥380/month (official pricing table). Reviews: 「あっという間に無料枠を埋めてしまったので、サブスクしました」(2026-10-31); 「ストック溢れたらサブスクしたい」(2026-11-04).

These differences let it keep users and collect money among its peers (4.1 rating count, able to enter Top Grossing), but Whimo and iko also offer "save places from SNS + share," so on features alone it isn't unique. Differentiation isn't the main reason it succeeded; distribution is.

Account base: @techno_bibi has 4547 followers, 2025-03 signup; the developer says they only 「SNSマーケを始めてみた」 this year (…/2115626674096336958). So it isn't built on an old following; it's a repost network built over more than a year inside Japan's indie-dev X circle, plus every tweet written in the standard viral format of "pain-point question + GIF / screenshot + free."

5. Why users come, why they stay and pay

  • Why they come: young Japanese users find shops through Instagram / TikTok / Tabelog, and "the places I want to go are scattered across a dozen apps" is a real pain point; the launch tweet's 635 saves show the line landed.
  • Why they stay: saving takes a few seconds, and the more you save, the harder it is to leave (data lock-in); when you plan a trip with friends or a partner, you sort it out together in いこボード.
  • Why they pay: the free cap is based on how many places you've saved, so heavy list-hoarders hit it fast; ¥380/mo isn't expensive. Some reviewers ask for a one-time purchase option.

6. How many people have seen it

  • Revenue isn't public (no TrustMRR listing; the developer has only posted rankings and download counts).
  • It circulates only in Japanese indie dev circles on X and in a few App recommendation accounts; we found no major media coverage. Our local X corpus (x-radar) has no hits for it.
  • Verdict: it's being talked about in a small circle. But the category itself is already crowded, so there's no "unnoticed demand" here.

7. Copycats

No clear copycats found. 2026-08 Later entries in the same niche (PickGo 8-25, Postlog 8-26, AnaGo 9-01, ittalog 9-02, スポットキーパー 9-21, かんたん行きたいリスト 9-30, いきたいマップ 10-05 and others) all launched after it. But Whimo, iko, Toco and SpotPocket all came earlier, so this looks like the whole category flooding in at once, not anyone specifically copying it.

8. What others can learn

  1. Run an X account as an "app portfolio": each new app's launch tweet pushes traffic to the older ones (when ショッピングリズム blew up, いこストック got pulled back onto the charts with it).
  2. Treat updates as marketing: every major update gets an emotional hook tweet (「進化させすぎました🥺」「ごめんなさい」), and that's often enough to pull the category chart back the next day.
  3. Pick "a small Japanese category + subscription": the travel category's Top Grossing bar is low, and a few dozen subscriptions can get you into the top 50, which is enough for a solo dev.
  4. Monetization hinges on the number of saved places, not on features: let people get hooked on saving first, then ask them to pay.
  5. The core interaction does one thing and does it very fast (5 seconds to save from the share sheet), and the launch copy is built entirely around that pain point.

9. Still unclear

  • Actual subscriber count and revenue (we don't know what the Top Grossing #42 position translates to in money).
  • Which day "travel category #1" was, and whether it was Top Free or Top Grossing (only the developer's own claim; our data starts on 10-28).
  • Whether "1200 downloads" is cumulative or for 10-31 alone.
  • Retention: there are only 75 ratings and growth is slow, so we don't know how many of the August launch users are still around.
  • Whether the Android version (472 installs) and the 13 languages bring in users outside Japan: nothing visible so far.
