# Website first, app second, one million installs in 5 months: Ukraine's drone map RadarUA, and a good playbook you can't follow

**What it is** A real-time map of air attacks in Ukraine: it shows where Shahed drones and missiles are, which way they're heading, and sends an alert when a target approaches your city. Free, ad-supported.

**Why it took off** Air strikes got denser in the autumn. About 4 months ahead of the official app, it turned "where is the target and how far away is it" into a map ordinary people could read. It also captured the search traffic for "air raid alert map" first, using SEO landing pages on the website and category keywords in the store.

**C** **How you could apply it** Don't build another air-raid map in Ukraine. Instead, use the sequence "SEO landing pages on the web first, then push into the app for alerts, category keywords in store titles, and 24 hours of livestreams as a distribution channel" for needs tied tightly to location and timing, like wildfires, floods, or power outages.

Grade C: the playbook is clear and worth learning, but Ukraine is already crowded with similar tools, the official app added the same features within 10-17, the data is accessible to anyone, and demand rises and falls with the war, so it's hard to copy elsewhere. Circulating in small circles

Ukraine's RadarUA automatically parses messages from monitoring channels on Telegram into dots on a map, telling you where Shahed drones and missiles are right now, which way they're heading, and how far away they are from you. June: the website went live first, and it picked up search traffic through a set of keyword landing pages. The app came after that. During the autumn peak in air strikes, Google Play installs rose from just over 10k at the end of August to just over 1M in early November, and the iOS app entered the top three of Ukraine's overall free chart. The playbook is worth studying, but in this market, almost nobody who follows can break in.

### A help request posted to Google

On the evening of Sep 16, 2026, at 8 p.m., an account called "Vanek 4200" posted in the Google Search Console community with the title "RadarUA.com doesn't rank for 'карта тривог' (air raid alert map)". The post said: "Our service has up to 500k users a day, but when people search for 'карта тривог' in Ukrainian on Google, they can hardly find our site." It then listed a self-check: the homepage returns 200, robots allows crawling, the canonical points to the homepage, and the title contains the term.

Three hours later, a Google community product expert replied: the term is in the page source, but Googlebot can't see it when rendering, and it only appears once users open the info panel. By midday the next day, the RadarUA team replied: "We've placed 'Карта тривог' below the logo, made it an H1, put it into the server-rendered HTML, and it's now live."

An air-raid map team, in the middle of a war, doing SEO seriously: they raised the issue and fixed it the same day. That's roughly how their growth happened. ("500k users a day" is their own claim, unverified.)

### What it is

A live air situation map of Ukraine, available on web, iOS, and Android. The features listed on the App Store page:

- Live map: Shahed, missiles, and KABs (guided glide bombs) shown with direction of movement

- Regions and districts where alerts are active are marked in red

- Alerts issued and lifted for your state are pushed as notifications

- Alerts when a target enters a city radius you set (you choose the radius)

- Daily attack records and statistics

- Free, no forced sign-up

The data isn't collected by the team itself. The FAQ on the official site says the source is public air-monitoring channels on Telegram, plus official alerts. What it does is turn the text messages scattered across those channels into dots on a map and a push notification.

The timeline is short: domain 2026-06-04 registered, website live in June, Android listed 6-23, iOS listed 7-21. The iOS developer name is the individual SERHII KYRYLOV, while Google Play lists "K Develop & Media", which the official site describes as a "volunteer community". Whether these are the same people is unverified.

### How big it is now

| Metric | Metric | Sources |
|---|---|---|
| Google Play installs | From 10-29's 897,206 → 11-05's 1,036,795,7 days +140k; at 8-30 it's still "10k+" | Google Play store page; vlada.com.ua 8-30 |
| Play rating | 29,652 ratings, 4.6 stars | Google Play,11-05 |
| iOS ratings | 14,375 charts in the Ukraine store (14,507 worldwide), 4.75 stars; listed for 108 days | App Store,11-06 |
| iOS charts | Ranked #1 in Ukraine's free News category since 11-04; overall free chart #11-04, #11-05 and #3,11-06, #6 | App Store |

Almost all of the volume is in Ukraine: iOS ratings from all other countries combined come to fewer than 130.

### Why these days: the whole category was pushed up at once by air strikes

From the night of Oct 31 into Nov 1,433, drones flew toward Ukraine (blitz.if.ua, 11-01); from the evening of Nov 2, another large wave of missile and drone strikes began (lb.ua, 11-03).

App Store Ukraine store's daily new ratings jumped up a tier on the same day:

| App | 10-29 to 11-02 daily | Daily from 11-03 |
|---|---|---|
| RadarUA | 14–75 | 195 / 195 / 416 / 354 |
| Air Raid Alert (official) | 247–770 | 961 / 1,166 |
| Карта тривог - Dron Alerts | 26–171 | 369 / 342 / 505 / 436 |
| Мапа тривог віджет | 8–69 | 120 / 104 |

So this November wave wasn't something RadarUA did. The war situation pushed every air-raid app up together. What it really won was the 9–October window: on Android it went from 10k to nearly 900k.

Users also wanted something very clear: not just "the alarm went off," but "where the drones are now, which way they're heading, and how far away they are." For a long time the official app "Повітряна тривога" only told you which areas had alarms, until on Oct 17 the Ministry of Digital Transformation and the Ministry of Defense launched a map showing the "approximate direction of movement of targets" (pravda.com.ua, 10-17). RadarUA came about 4 months earlier.

### Where users come from

Evidence, from strongest to weakest:

1. **Website SEO** . radarua.com has split out a pile of landing pages by search term: "карта шахедів" (Shahed map), "радар шахедів", "тривога зараз" (alert now), "карта ракет", "МіГ-31К", plus city pages (/kyiv etc.), and a knowledge base /baza: "what to do when the alarm sounds", "the two-wall rule", "emergency kit checklist". Articles have been published since Jun 20. The founder's opening help post shows they know this is the main channel.

2. **Store titles lead with the category keyword** . Both iOS and Android are called "Карта тривог - RadarUA", putting the top category search term ahead of the brand name. The closest rival, Dron Alerts, and the later KUPOL use exactly the same format.

3. **Media and opinion leaders** . NV's Sep 15 column "how to know where the Shahed is flying" had a soldier recommend two resources, the first being RadarUA, saying he downloaded it from the App Store and tested it for several days; Radikal relayed the same author on Sep 11. vlada.com.ua's Aug 30 roundup gave it its own section and included RadarUA's own Telegram channel invite link, which looks like a submitted or sponsored placement (inference, not verified). Speka's Oct 22 "4 maps" roundup did not include it.

4. **Telegram channel** . The "RadarUA | Карта тривог" channel description links to iOS, Android, and web entry points.

5. **YouTube 24-hour livestream** . The channel @RadarUA_map has about 7k subscribers and regularly runs a "Карта тривог RadarUA наживо 24/7" live map; from Aug 9 it started posting Shorts, the top one with 59k views, with RadarUA.com written right in the caption.

6. **TikTok** . radarua_live (5,107 followers) and radarua72737 (1,728 followers) post "ТРИВОГА" short videos daily, with individual videos getting 4 thousand to 69k views; the bio points to a Telegram group. Whether these are official is unverified; they may be others riding the name.

No evidence found that it runs paid ads (not finding evidence doesn't mean there were none).

### Where the money comes from: ads, and the most hated kind

The app is free with no in-app purchases and relies on ads. Revenue is not public.

Ads are its biggest source of bad reviews. Recent App Store Ukraine store reviews (September to November):

- "Ads pop up during alarms!! 😡 Deleted." (11-04,1 stars)

- "Trash ads plastered right in the middle of the screen." (10-31,1 stars)

- "Ad pop-ups during a red alert, that's crossing the line." (10-10,1 stars)

- "You put ads in an app where you need to see what's in the sky immediately, and what I ended up staring at was an ad video I couldn't close." (9-22,3 stars)

- "Put the ads on the days the alert isn't in my area. I'm watching those things fly, and an ad jumps up, that's just not right." (10-16,2 stars)

Other bad reviews focus on accuracy and stability: "push notifications come several minutes later than Київ Цифровий (Kyiv city's official app)" (11-04), "target positions lag, sometimes the count doubles" (11-02), "Shahed is right overhead, the map says the nearest one is 100 km away" (9-30), plus several "it froze, reinstalling doesn't help".

The most interesting are the suggestions: "make a $1–2 ad-free option" (10-19), "make a paid version with no ads" (9-12), "add a home-screen widget that shows in real time what's flying where, like in the app" (9-25, 9-28), "I only need my region, not the whole oblast" (10-19). Users are actively asking to pay, and it hasn't taken the money.

### Who it's competing with

| Competitors | Launched | Scale | How RadarUA differs |
|---|---|---|---|
| Повітряна тривога (official, Ajax / Stfalcon) | 2022-02 | iOS Ukraine store 348k ratings; Play 17.6M installs | Official alerts, broadest coverage; 10-17 added the target direction map |
| Карта тривог - Dron Alerts(neptun.in.ua) | 2026-01-30 | iOS 18k ratings, 11-04 and 11-05, #1 overall Top Free | Same web-first start, same naming, launched earlier, and bigger on iOS than RadarUA |
| Neboskhyl: Air Raid Alert Map | 2026-10-01 | iOS 2,250 ratings, 7 days +1,307,10-30, #10-31 overall Top Free 1 | Launched after RadarUA and growing faster |
| Мапа тривог віджет(Stfalcon) | 2024-02 | iOS 5,253 ratings | Focused on an alert widget, not tracking targets |
| Long-standing alert apps like eAlert and AirAlert | 2020–2022 | eAlert iOS 10k ratings; AirAlert Play 857k installs | Only push alerts, no target map |
| Dronar, Alert+, Sych, КОНТУР, KUPOL, etc. | 2026-08 to October | A few hundred ratings or a few thousand installs each | A batch that appeared after July and hasn't grown yet |
| Web maps such as alerts.in.ua, mapa.ua, dimap.live, map.ukrainealarm.com | 2022–2026 | Mostly no public data | Many web maps exist; RadarUA's edge is launching across five entry points at once |

The product itself has almost no differentiation: the data sources are the same for everyone (public Telegram channels plus official alerts), and features overlap heavily with neptun, Dron Alerts, and mapa.ua. RadarUA won on approach and timing: it used web pages to capture search, then funneled people into the app for push notifications; it entered in June, right before the 9–November demand peak.

### Can you follow it?

Building the same thing in Ukraine won't work. The features are already covered by an official app, there's an earlier and bigger Dron Alerts, Neboskhyl that hit #1 overall right after launching in October, and a string of similar apps launched between 8 and October. You can't differentiate on features, and anyone can access the data.

Doing it somewhere else is also hard. Demand for this kind of product follows the war situation entirely: it surges when strikes are heavy and drops to zero during a ceasefire. Other places with air-raid alerts, such as Israel, already have mature alert apps; and building a "where are the targets" map in any real conflict zone runs into accuracy, liability, and local regulatory hurdles. This isn't a category you can plan to "take a market" in.

What you can really take is the approach, applied to other "sudden, location-based, everyone searches for it" needs:

1. **Build the web first, then the app** . Split landing pages by threat type × city, add a knowledge base to capture long-tail queries; keywords must be visible in server-rendered HTML.

2. **Use "category keyword - brand name" for store titles** , putting the word users search for at the front.

3. **Parse data automatically from public feeds** (Telegram channels, social media, official APIs) rather than collecting it yourself.

4. **Use a 24-hour livestream as an always-on distribution channel** ; on YouTube, people keep finding it.

5. **Keep ads out of the moment users need you most** , and offer a $1–2 ad-removal option. RadarUA's users have already written the requirement for you in their reviews.

### If it were you

**One-line verdict** : copy the playbook, not the market. RadarUA shows that "web SEO first, then app push" can bring a must-have map to a million installs in a few months, but Ukraine's air-raid map space is already crowded, and the demand switch isn't in your hands.

**Who it suits** : one or two people who want to build a tool strongly tied to place and timing (wildfires, floods, earthquakes, power outages, traffic restrictions, air quality, tourist-site queues), who can write SEO landing pages and automatically parse public feeds into structured data.

**Who it doesn't suit** : people who want to build yet another air-raid map in Ukraine; people who plan to copy it into other conflict zones; people who only build apps and skip web pages and search.

**How to build it** : launch a web map first, with a homepage that states its purpose in one sentence, and split pages by city and event type; once users arrive, prompt them to install the app and enable push ("alert me when an event enters my chosen radius" is the retention feature). Don't rely only on interstitial ads for revenue; offer a low-priced ad-removal or premium push tier from day one.

**How to acquire users** : mainly Google search plus store search, with titles that capture category keywords; add a Telegram or WhatsApp channel and a 24-hour livestream. When an event hits, get yourself into local media's roundup articles proactively.

**When to get in early** : this demand is seasonal or event-driven, so you have to launch and get indexed before the next peak. For wildfires, for example, build and get Google to index the landing pages two to three months before the local dry season. RadarUA entered in June and took off in September.

**Signs you've misread it** : ① during a period when strikes are less intense, RadarUA's daily new ratings stay at early-November levels, meaning the tool has retention beyond the war situation and the Ukrainian market is deeper than it looks; ② after it launches a paid ad-free option, it enters the Top Grossing chart in the iOS Ukraine store, meaning this audience will pay for a safety tool and the low-priced subscription path works; ③ conversely, after the official app adds a target map, RadarUA's iOS ranking drops out of the overall top 50 and never returns, meaning once the official side moves, there's no room left for indie developers in this category.

## Карта тривог - RadarUA (iOS id6791926987) research report

Date: 2026-11-06. Regions checked: all 15 charted storefronts in the product card. Volume is almost entirely in Ukraine (ua): ua has 14,375 ratings, while all other storefronts combined have fewer than 130. The analysis below focuses on ua.

### One line

RadarUA is a real-time map of air-raid threats in Ukraine. It automatically parses messages from public Telegram monitoring channels into points on a map, showing the location and heading of Shahed drones, missiles, and KABs, flags regions currently under alert, and sends a push when a target approaches a radius around a city you set. It's free, requires no sign-up, and monetizes through ads. It **launched as a website first, then an app** : 2026-06-04 registered the domain, the website went live in June, the Android version shipped 06-23, and the iOS version shipped 07-21.

### 1. Why it took off

#### 1. Demand: a must-have need that spikes suddenly with the war

- In 2026 autumn, Russia's drone and missile strikes on Ukraine kept escalating. From 10-31 night to 11-01, there were 433 drones (blitz.if.ua, 2026-11-01); from 11-02 18:00 to 11-03 was a large-scale missile and drone attack, including Tu-95/Tu-160 bombers (24tv.ua, lb.ua, fakty.com.ua, 2026-11-03).

- In our data, the daily new ratings for the entire "air raid alert" category jumped a tier at the same time from 11-03 to 11-05 (App Store database, ua storefront):
    - RadarUA: from 10-29 to 11-02, 14–75 per day, rising to 11-03 to 11-06 194 / 189 / 412 / 349 ratings.
    - Official Повітряна тривога (Ajax): 247–770 per day, rising to 961 / 1166.
    - Карта тривог - Dron Alerts: 26–171 per day, rising to 369 / 342 / 505 / 436.
    - Мапа тривог віджет: 8–69 per day, rising to 120 / 104.

So the November wave was mainly **war events lifting the whole category** , not something RadarUA did on its own.

- What users actually want is more than "an alert is sounding": **where the drone is now, which way it's heading, and how far it is from me** . The official app originally only showed where alerts were active, until 2026-10-17, when the Ministry of Digital Transformation and the Ministry of Defense launched a map of approximate target movement direction (pravda.com.ua, dou.ua, tsn.ua, 2026-10-17). RadarUA turned this layer into an everyday map roughly 4 months earlier.

#### 2. Scale

- **Google Play** (googleplay library): installs 10-29 on 897,206,11-05, up 139,589 in 1,036,795,7 days; install tier rose from 500K+ to 1M+. The vlada.com.ua article 2026-08-30 says "over 10k downloads on Google Play," so 9–October added roughly 900k over two months. Play ratings: 29,652, averaging 4.6 stars.

- **iOS** (App Store database, ua storefront): reached 14,375 ratings within 108 days of launch (14,507 across all storefronts), average 4.75 stars. Starting 2026-11-04, it ranked #1 in Ukraine's free News chart, peaking at #3 on the overall Top Free chart (11-04, 11-05), and was #6 on 11-06.

- **Website** : The team 2026-09-16 posted in the Google Search Console community, claiming “up to 500k users a day” (support.google.com/webmasters/thread/468038994). This is self-reported and unverified.

#### 3. Where users come from (ranked by strength of evidence)

1. **Organic website traffic and SEO (confirmed)** : radarua.com has many keyword-targeted landing pages, such as "карта шахедів / радар шахедів / тривога зараз / карта ракет / МіГ-31К," plus city pages (/kyiv, etc.) and an educational knowledge base at /baza ("what to do during an alert," "the two-wall rule," "emergency kit checklist," etc.). Articles started going up in 2026-06-20 (per Exa indexing dates). The team also asked in the Google community why searches for "карта тривог" weren't ranking; following the advice, they switched H1 to server-side rendering, and it went live 09-17 the same day. This shows they clearly treat SEO as their main channel.

2. **App store search optimization (confirmed)** : both the iOS and Android titles use "Карта тривог - RadarUA," putting the category's top search term ahead of the brand name. Dron Alerts (an app from neptun.in.ua) and KUPOL use the same naming pattern.

3. **Media / influencer endorsements (confirmed)** :
    - NV column (2026-09-15): a soldier recommended two resources, and the 1st is RadarUA, saying he "downloaded it from the AppStore and tested it for a few days."
    - Radikal.ua (09-11) paraphrased the same author.
    - The roundup on vlada.com.ua (08-30) gives RadarUA its own section and includes RadarUA's own Telegram channel invite link (t.me/+ss6MpGNH2D4xNDNi, channel name "RadarUA | Карта тривог"). It **looks very much like paid placement or a submitted post** . Whether it was paid is unverified.
    - Speka's 10-22 "4-map" roundup **leaves out RadarUA** .

4. **Telegram channel funneling (confirmed)** : the official channel bio links to iOS, Android, and web. The data itself also comes from public Telegram monitoring channels (the official FAQ says so).

5. **YouTube 24/7 livestreams and Shorts (confirmed)** : the @RadarUA_map channel has about 7K subscribers and 11 videos, 24 hours of live map streams ("Карта тривог RadarUA наживо 24/7"), and one Short with 59K views. Shorts started going up in 2026-08-09, with RadarUA.com written right in the captions.

6. **TikTok (not confirmed as official)** : radarua_live (5,107 followers) and radarua72737 (1,728 followers) post daily "ТРИВОГА" short videos, with 4K to 69K views per clip, and the bios send people to the Telegram group. Whether these accounts are affiliated with RadarUA is unverified; they could be third parties riding the name.

7. **Paid acquisition** : no evidence found; our ad database doesn't cover this product.

#### 4. Why it sticks and how it pays off

- It's a safety must-have. Every night air raid brings people back to open it, and the push for "a target is approaching my city" is a feature used every day.

- Monetization is through ads. Several recent iOS reviews complain about "video ads popping up during alerts" and "ads appearing dead center on the screen" (apps.apple.com/ua reviews, September to November). There are no in-app purchases, and the Play page doesn't label it as "contains ads." Revenue is not public.

- Existing negative reviews: push alerts arrive a few minutes slower than "Київ Цифровий," target positions lag or duplicate, and the app freezes. These are retention risks.

### II. Competitors

| Competitors | Where | Launched | Scale (source) | How RadarUA differs from it |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Air Raid Alert (Ajax / Stfalcon, official) | iOS + Android | 2022-02 | iOS: 347,876 ratings; Play: 17.6M installs (library, 11-06) | Official alerts, widest coverage; 2026-10-17 only later added a target-direction map. RadarUA was built around target tracking from day one |
| Карта тривог - Dron Alerts(Volodymyr Malik,neptun.in.ua) | iOS + web | 2026-01-30 | iOS: 18,004 ratings; 11-04, 11-05 Top Free overall #1 (library) | Most direct rival: same naming format, same web-first drone-map product, launched earlier with bigger iOS numbers. RadarUA is stronger on Android and web SEO (inferred) |
| Neboskhyl: Air Raid Alert Map | iOS | 2026-10-01 | 2,250 ratings, 7 day growth 1,307; 10-30, 10-31 Top Free overall #1 (library) | Launched after RadarUA, growing fast, a follower |
| Мапа тривог віджет(Stfalcon) | iOS | 2024-02 | 5,253 ratings (library) | Focuses on regional alert widgets, doesn't track targets |
| eAlert(Wild Pluto) | iOS | 2022-02 | 10,052 ratings (library) | Long-running alert push service, no target map |
| Флюгер(UAMILS) | iOS | 2025-07 | 961 ratings (library) | Air defense safety helper, small volume |
| Dronar / Air Alert Radar / Alert+ / Sych / КОНТУР / Повітряна тривога (Air Alert) | iOS | 2026-08 to October | Each 0–337 ratings (library) | A batch of similar new apps since July, none have picked up traction yet |
| AirAlert(chichi.com.ua) | Android | 2020 | 857K installs (Google Play library) | Veteran alert app, no target map |
| Карта тривог - KUPOL | Android + web at kupol.in.ua | 2026-10-22 | 3,920 installs | Copied the naming format and product shape |
| alerts.in.ua, map.ukrainealarm.com, mapa.ua, dimap.live, neptun.in.ua, skyalert, alarmmap.online, vartaai, visitkyiv, map.war-monitor.org | Web | 2022 to 2026 | Mostly no public data | Plenty of web maps. RadarUA's edge is covering five entry points at once (web, iOS, Android, Telegram, YouTube) plus push alerts |

### 3. Differentiation

- The product itself barely differs: same data sources as everyone else (public Telegram monitoring channels plus the official alert API), and features that heavily overlap with neptun / Dron Alerts / mapa.ua.

- The real difference is in the **playbook** :
    - Build the website first, use a large set of keyword landing pages and a knowledge base to capture searches like "карта тривог" / "карта шахедів", then move web users into the app and push notifications;
    - Put the category keyword directly in the store title;
    - Push simultaneously on Telegram channels, YouTube livestreams, and media articles;
    - Built "push when a target enters my radius", roughly 4 months before the official app.

- These explain part of why it took off, but timing mattered more: 2026 autumn saw dense air strikes and the whole category rose together. It entered in June, right ahead of the 9–November demand peak, and from 9–October Android installs went from 10K to about 900K.

- Threat: the official app 10-17 added a target map, Dron Alerts is outranking it on iOS, and followers like Neboskhyl are growing fast.

### 4. Visibility

- Revenue isn't public (found nothing on TrustMRR or from founder posts). In the X corpus, 0 posts mention it (x-radar, 120 days). No discussion on Reddit or HN.

- Some local exposure in Ukraine: NV, Radikal, and vlada.com.ua have written about it; Speka's roundup didn't include it.

- Outside Ukraine, the developer community barely knows it; locally, the market is already crowded with similar products.

### 5. What to borrow

1. For sudden, high-frequency, location-based safety needs, **start with a web map plus SEO landing pages** (split by city and threat type), then route that traffic into app push alerts.

2. Use the "category keyword - brand name" format in store titles to capture the top category search term.

3. Automatically parse public Telegram / social feeds into structured data and map it, so you don't have to collect data yourself.

4. Treat a YouTube 24/7 livestream as an always-on distribution channel.

5. Ad monetization has to avoid critical moments: reviews show that popping ads during alerts is its biggest source of bad reviews.

### 6. Still uncertain

- Who's behind it: the iOS developer is an individual, SERHII KYRYLOV; on Google Play it's "K Develop & Media"; the Google community post account is "Vanek 4200", and the official line is "volunteer community". Not verified whether these are the same people or what their background is.

- "500K daily users" is self-reported.

- Whether the vlada.com.ua piece is paid advertorial.

- Whether the two TikTok accounts are official.

- Whether it runs paid acquisition.

- How much ad revenue it makes.

- Whether it has any link to Dron Alerts / neptun (same naming format).
