11 ratings and #12 on Germany's education paid chart: a €8.99 app that only does the North Rhine-Westphalia fishing license exam

What it is A study app for the German North Rhine-Westphalia fishing license exam: question bank, fish identification, rod assembly, knot tying, and a full mock exam, sold as a one-time purchase for €8.99.

Why it took off November is NRW's exam season. From 10-29 the developer posted one hands-on exam question a day on TikTok, watched by real candidates; and since almost nobody competes on Germany's education paid chart, a few sales a day was enough to reach the top 15.

BHow you could follow it Pick a small region with a mandatory, practical certification (fishing licenses in other states, hunting licenses, boating licenses, etc.), build out the practical part others skip, sell it as a one-time purchase, and start serializing daily exam-question short videos three weeks before the exam season.

Grade B: the playbook is clear, costs are low, almost nobody competes on the paid chart, and few people have noticed yet. But a single market has only about ten thousand candidates a year and is seasonal, so one app makes pocket money. It only looks like a business when you build a set of these across states and certifications. Few people know about it yet

FischFit NRW, a fishing license study app built by one person in North Rhine-Westphalia, launched in July and had only 6 ratings after three months. At the end of October it started posting one TikTok a day asking "Can you assemble this exam rod?", which hit the November exam season and got it onto Germany's App Store education paid chart at #12. The rank looks good, but behind it is a small market of roughly ten thousand candidates a year and a paid chart with almost no competition. Below: what it sells, how the rank came about, how much money is involved, and how this playbook might transfer elsewhere.

One exam rod, and one line: "my exam is next week"

On Oct 29, Leon Jokic, an indie developer in the small town of Greven near Münster, posted the first TikTok from the account @fischfitapp, titled "Prüfungsrute 1/10": the first of the 10 rod-assembly questions in the NRW (North Rhine-Westphalia) fishing license practical exam, "Light rod for roach: can you assemble it correctly? Tell me in the comments which rod you find hardest." By 11-06 it had 27K views. The comments quickly showed who was watching:

Hab nächste Woche meine Prüfung 😅 (My exam is next week)
Brauche mehr Videos muss lernen (Need more videos, have to study)

Some experienced anglers also came in to point out mistakes: "No float stop on the float, and no rubber bead to protect the knot." Another said: "I've had my license for 50 years and I'd fail this today 😂".

After that it posted one a day, reaching 9/10 by 11-06. Fish identification clips were mixed in, such as "Rotauge oder Rotfeder? Merk dir die Rückenflosse!" (Roach or rudd? Remember the dorsal fin!), with 27K views, labeled "Werbung: FischFit NRW, Link im Profil" (Ad: FischFit NRW, link in profile). Over 9 days and 17 videos it drew about 140K views in total, and the account has about 2,000 followers (TikTok, 11-06).

What it is

A German-language study app for the Fischerprüfung (fishing license exam) covering only NRW. It is sold only in the German store, as a one-time iOS purchase at €8.99, with no free tier. The NRW exam has four parts: 60 theory questions, identifying 6 fish species, one rod-assembly question, and tying a Clinchknoten (improved clinch knot). FischFit covers all four:

  • An official question bank of 357 questions across 6 subjects; you get told why an answer is right right after answering, and wrong answers automatically return to the review pool;
  • 58 species made into flip cards; in the exam you must name the fish yourself, and 6 of 5 correct counts as passing;
  • Rod assembly A1–A10, with a info card for each component (type, length, casting weight); the exam draws one question, and 28 points get you 25 points to pass;
  • Knot tying as a 3D animation, with steps to order;
  • A full mock exam that follows the exam-day flow and passing threshold; enter your exam date and it builds a schedule automatically. The website homepage says "30 days left, 12 questions a day, and you'll have finished all 357 questions."

The website headline is blunt: "The complete exam in one app, not another flashcard app." The FAQ adds: "Rod assembly is tested in the NRW practical exam, and most study apps don't cover it." That is the real selling point.

How it ranks

First the numbers (App Store, Germany):

DateCumulative ratingsOverall paid chartEducation Top Paid
10-28619914
10-316—12
11-026—73
11-04718812
11-05920015
11-061119012

Three things stacked together.

Exam season. NRW's autumn exams cluster in November: Dortmund opens 11-03, Bochum runs 11-09 to 19 (per the two cities' sites), and some districts have already filled their slots for 2026. FischFit launched in July 29 but only posted its launch announcement on Instagram in October 24, "Hallo, NRW! FischFit ist da"; TikTok started 10-29, and the 1.2.0 major version (exam page, 3D knot tying, rod-assembly videos, study-plan reminders) shipped in 11-04. Promotion and the product were both timed to the final two or three weeks before the exam.

The content is the exam questions. "Prüfungsrute X/10" recreates the 10 questions candidates face on exam day, and the viewers are mostly real candidates, with comments like "I need this urgently for my exam." Individual videos got only ten to twenty thousand views, but people who watch and tap through to the store pay. In 11-02 and 03 it dropped to around #70–80 on the education chart; by 11-04 it was back at #12, and ratings began adding one or two a day from that date. The timing lines up, but how many sales it drove is not known (inference).

Almost nobody is fighting for the Top Paid spot. The bar is low in the German education Top Paid chart: 11-06 #17 on the same chart, "Fischer Lernfragen Bayern", has only 8 ratings. Most of its peers are free question banks that compete on the Top Free chart; the few that do compete on Top Paid are older one-time purchase apps. At this bar, #12 probably works out to a few to a dozen-plus sales a day (estimate). One detail: 10-28 it hasn't posted on TikTok yet, and it's already on the overall Top Paid chart 199, which suggests some of the people searching "Fischerprüfung NRW" before the exam were already inclined to buy.

Another low-cost tactic: after candidates pass, they DM the developer their exam certificate and purchase screenshot on Instagram, receiving a small bait giveaway. The terms state it is not a lottery and everyone gets one, and it doesn't require a rating. The result is direct-message relationships and a stream of real "I passed" messages.

How much money

Not much. NRW has roughly 16K people taking the Fischerprüfung each year, with a first-attempt pass rate of about nine in ten (public fishing association data). At €8.99, after Apple's 15% cut, each sale nets about €7.6. Even if 20 out of every 1 candidates bought it, that's 800 sales and roughly €6K a year (estimate). The Android version is priced at $9.99, with "10+ downloads" on Google Play, so the volume is almost nothing. Once the exam season ends, it will most likely drop off the chart in December and only come back for the spring season.

So this is a "small but precise" business. The high rank comes from a cold chart, not a big market.

Who it's competing with

Question banks are something everyone does, and most are free:

CompetitorsScale (German store ratings, 11-06)How FischFit differs
Angelschein Trainer(PriorApps)1,377,4.8 ratingsFree with in-app purchases, covers multiple states, leads with AI; no NRW rod assembly or knot tying
Angelschein NRW(TuesdayCoding)752,4.6 ratingsA legacy free quiz-bank brand from 2020, with more than 8 state-specific apps
Kuschew's NRW trio297 / 266 / 7Theory free, rod building €9.99, fish IDs €4.99, sold as three separate apps, mostly unupdated for 2021 years
Fischereiprüfung NRW(Lars Behnke)65,4.3 ratings€3.99, a 2015-year-old quiz bank
Websites like fischtest, Angelschein AppNot verified12–16 states, free quiz bank, PRO one-time €9; runs on search traffic

FischFit's rating count is only about 1% of the leader's, so it isn't the winner in this niche. What it did was merge the three things Kuschew sold separately into one product, priced below buying rod building alone, and go from 1.0.6 to 1.2.0 in a week. 11-03 A five-star review reads "Fischbilder sind mittlerweile richtig gut geworden" (the fish pictures have become really good now), so early users watched it improve.

The category is getting crowded too: 2026 years after 9 to October, five or six new apps like Angelschein lernen and Fischerprüfung lernen launched, and TuesdayCoding and SEUME are rolling out state-by-state catalogs. I haven't yet seen anyone copying FischFit's bundle.

If it were you

B worth a try: the playbook is clear, costs are low, and almost nobody is fighting for the Top Paid spots. The weak points are obvious too: each market is small and seasonal, so one app only earns pocket money; it takes a series to make a real business.

Who it suits: indie devs who can ship a solid quiz app in a month or two, ideally someone who has just passed the exam or knows which part trips people up on exam day; anyone in German-speaking markets or who can find a minority-language mandatory exam.

Who it doesn't suit: anyone hoping one app brings in tens of thousands a month (that ceiling is real); anyone unwilling to chase exam seasons with content every year; anyone who only wants another free quiz bank (that layer is already saturated).

How to do it: pick a credential that is "small region × mandatory exam × hands-on practical part", build in the practical section others find tedious, sell as a one-time purchase, and aim for the quiet Top Paid charts. Candidates: the Fischerprüfung in the other 15 German states (FischFit has said on IG that other states are "in planning", so move now), the Jagdschein hunting licence, the SBF boating licence, the §34a security guard certificate, and the AEVO trainer qualification (the last two are already in the top 30 of the education paid chart). Note that not every state tests rod building: a TikTok commenter says Schleswig-Holstein and Baden-Württemberg exams lack this item (unverified), so check the exam rules before you start.

How to acquire users: follow its playbook. Serialize the exam's practical questions as "X/10", one a day, ending with "Can you get this right? Tell me in the comments"; concentrate promotion and major releases in the two to three weeks before exam season; "enter exam date → countdown + daily question quota" works as both feature and ad line; give a small gift to people who pass, to get back DMs and pass-stories. Put the state and credential name right in the store title to capture search traffic.

When to start: plan around exam season. NRW exams are mainly in spring and autumn (inferred; dates vary by city), so the next window is next spring. List at least a month early and start posting content three weeks before.

Signs you got it wrong: ① FischFit still has only a few dozen ratings going into next spring's season, meaning one state's paying audience is smaller than you estimated; ② the credential you picked already has paid apps with several hundred ratings or more, so the slot is taken; ③ two weeks of serialized posts have views but ratings and chart position haven't moved, meaning these candidates won't pay for prep and would rather use free quizzes.

Why FischFit NRW (iOS id6792872841) is making it

Research date 2026-11-06. Data sources: our appstore database (app_profile / app_day / v_chart, de store), iTunes lookup (de), the fischfitapp.de website, TikHub scrapes of TikTok @fischfitapp, public Instagram posts from @fischfit.app, and Jina web search.

One line

A study app for the NRW (North Rhine-Westphalia) fishing license exam (Fischerprüfung). The developer is Leon Jokic, an individual developer from Greven (Münsterland, local to NRW), selling it as a one-time purchase for 8.99 € (9.99 $ on Play). It ranks #190 on Germany's Top Paid overall and #12 on Top Paid Education. It mainly rides two things: the hard demand of NRW's autumn exam season (November), plus daily TikTok short videos since Oct 29 in a "Prüfungsrute 1/10…10/10" series. The differentiation is bundling the practical parts that other apps split up or skip (Rutenbau A1–A10 rod assembly + Clinchknoten knot tying + 4 full mock exams) into one app, sold once.

1. Data

  • Listed 2026-07-29, version 1.2.0 (2026-11-04 update), German only, German store only (iTunes lookup).
  • Score: 5.0, from 11 entries. In our database, 10-28 to 11-03 stayed at 6 entries: 11-04 +1, 11-05 +2, 11-06 +2 (appstore.app_day).
  • Chart (de, appstore.app_day): | Date | Top Paid overall | Top Paid Education | |---|---|---| | 10-28 | 199 | 14 | | 10-29~10-30 | — | 29 / 27 | | 10-31~11-01 | — | 12 / 14 | | 11-02~11-03 | — | 73 / 83 | | 11-04 | 188 | 12 | | 11-05 | 200 | 15 | | 11-06 | 190 | 12 |
  • Threshold warning: the bar is low on the German education paid chart. 11-06 On the same chart, #17 "Fischer Lernfragen Bayern" has only 8 ratings, and #22 "Fischereiprüfung Bayern 2026" has 138 (v_chart). So the #12 spot probably means only a few to a dozen sales a day (estimate, unverified), and total revenue is small. 10-28 It's already on the overall Top Paid chart 199, which suggests that before TikTok took off, store search was already bringing steady, small-scale paid downloads.
  • Google Play version (de.fischfitapp.nrw): paid, page shows "10+ Downloads", almost no Android traction (Play Store page).

2. Competitors (doing the same thing)

This is a very crowded niche: roughly 16,000 people take the Fischerprüfung in NRW each year, with a first-attempt pass rate of about 90% (fve-online.de, asv-nienborg.de). New apps flooded in starting in 2026.

Bottom line: question banks are everywhere, and most are free. FischFit's review count in the German store is only about 1% of the leader's in its category. It is not the winner of this niche. It charted because almost nobody in the education Top Paid chart competes with a one-time purchase, and it happened to launch right as exam season drove volume.

3. Growth tactics (evidence found)

  1. TikTok organic (confirmed, the main driver): @fischfitapp posted its first video on 10-29, reached 16 videos and 1,999 followers by 11-06, with 2,800 likes total (TikHub). The content runs on two tracks:
    • The "Prüfungsrute X/10" series, one of the 10 rod-assembly questions from the NRW practical exam posted daily with the prompt "Can you assemble it right?" and comment bait. Views: 1/10 27k, 3/10 12k, 4/10 12.7k, 6/10 7,200.
    • Fish ID and fishing tips, e.g. "Rotauge oder Rotfeder?" 27k (tagged "Werbung: FischFit NRW, Link im Profil"), "Stundenlang kein Biss?" 17k, "Spinner in 90 Sekunden" 8,300.
    • About 140k cumulative views over 9 days. Ratings accelerate from 11-04 (+1/+2/+2), matching when TikTok picked up; the education chart drops to 73/83,11-04 between 11-02 and 03 and then recovers to 12. The timing fits, but causation can't be fully confirmed.
  2. Instagram @fischfit.app (verified): 2026-10-24 posted the launch post "Hallo, NRW! FischFit ist da", saying "Weitere Bundesländer sind in Planung" (more states are planned). So the App launched in July 29, but outward promotion only started in late October, right before the November exam season.
  3. Store search (inferred): Before TikTok took off, 10-28 it was already on the overall Top Paid chart at #199 and the education Top Paid chart at #14. Some of the people searching "Fischerprüfung NRW" before the exam buy it. The name includes "NRW" and the screenshots push the "complete exam" angle.
  4. Landing page fischfitapp.de (confirmed): an exam countdown ("Noch 30 Tage … Mit 12 Fragen am Tag bist du rechtzeitig durch alle 357"), a playable mini quiz, a fish-card flip demo, and a rod-assembly demo. SEO footprint is tiny; it only ranks for brand searches.
  5. "Pass the exam, get a free lure" (confirmed): After passing, you send proof of the exam pass and a purchase screenshot, and you get a Köder (lure) via Instagram DM or email. The terms state it is "not conditional on a rating." This pulls users back into Instagram DMs and yields real pass cases (useful later as UGC and word-of-mouth material) for the cost of one lure.
  6. Paid ads: No evidence found (x-radar doesn't mention it, and no Meta or TikTok ads turned up; the ad library only tracks products on our list, so no results doesn't mean no spend).
  7. Press / X / Reddit: No coverage or discussion found (x-radar returned 90 results for "FischFit" over 0 days).

4. Why it took off

  • Timing: NRW autumn exam sessions cluster in November, e.g. Dortmund 11-03 and Bochum 11-09~19 (per both city government websites). Märkischer Kreis was already fully booked for 2026. The two to three weeks before the exam are peak season for buying study apps. FischFit's promotion (10-24 IG, 10-29 TikTok) and a major product update (1.2.0: an exam page, 3D knot-tying animations, rod assembly videos, and automatic study plans and reminders once you enter your exam date) all landed inside that window.
  • Content matches the exam one-to-one: TikTok's "Prüfungsrute 1/10–10/10" are the 10 rod-assembly questions from the exam. Viewers are real candidates, so the clip itself creates demand. Views are modest (1–30k), but the audience is precise and converts well.
  • Fills the practical gap competitors skip: The website FAQ says "Der Rutenbau kommt in der NRW-Praxisprüfung vor, die meisten Lern-Apps lassen ihn weg" (rod building is part of the NRW practical exam, and most study apps leave it out). The NRW exam has 4 parts (60 questions, 6 fish species, rod assembly, Clinch knot), and free question banks only cover the first part. The long-standing Kuschew sells rod assembly separately for 9.99 € and hasn't been updated in 2021 years. FischFit is 8.99 € all-in and iterating fast (1.0.6→1.2.0 in just one week, v1.0.9 fixed fish images; a reviewer wrote "Fischbilder sind mittlerweile richtig gut geworden").
  • Low bar in the paid chart: Free competitors all compete in the Top Free chart, and the education Top Paid chart has only a few older one-time-purchase apps in the same niche. So a few sales a day can put it at #12, and store visibility in turn drives search traffic.

5. Differentiation, and whether it's the reason it took off

There are three differentiators: one state done thoroughly (NRW only: questions, fish, rod assembly, knots, and exam rules all NRW-specific), a full 4-part mock exam plus the practical section (rod assembly A1–A10, 3D Clinch knot), and one-time purchase, no free tier (going against the grain in a sea of free question banks). Are these the reason it grew? Partly. The practical section is both the app's selling point and the easiest thing to film for TikTok ("can you assemble this rod?"). Differentiation and acquisition are the same thing here, which is why it can generate volume from content more easily than a plain question bank. But the direct driver of growth was exam season + TikTok; without content distribution, differentiation alone would have left it with only 6 ratings in the three months before late October.

6. Visibility and copycats

  • Visibility: Still little known. No public revenue, no press, no discussion on X or Reddit; just its own TikTok (2,000 followers) and IG.
  • Copycats: None clearly copying it. But the category has seen a steady stream of new apps for 2026 years: Angelschein lernen (10-30), Fischerprüfung Österreich (10-19), Fischereischein Prüfung Test (10-08), Angelschein & Fischlexikon (10-07), Fischerprüfung lernen (09-24), plus TuesdayCoding, SEUME, and Lukas Kohl, which roll out state-by-state (appstore.app_profile). That's category competition, not copies of FischFit.

7. Takeaways

  • The "small region × mandatory exam" prep niche: build for one state or one certificate, cover every part of the exam (including the practical part others skip), sell it as a one-time purchase, and almost nobody on the paid chart competes with you. Replicate it for: the Fischerprüfung in the other 15 states, Jagdschein, Sportbootführerschein (SBF), Sachkunde §34a, and AEVO (the last two are already in the education Top Paid top 30).
  • Split the exam questions into 1/10…10/10 serialized short videos, one a day, with "can you get this right?" to drive comments. You can reach precise candidates even with a small following.
  • Push promotion and major releases into the 2–3 weeks before exam season; "enter your exam date → countdown + daily question quota" is both a feature and marketing.
  • "Pass the exam, get a small gift, redeem with proof": it builds DM relationships and pass cases for little cost, and it avoids the line on incentivized reviews.

8. Uncertain

  • Actual sales and revenue: Converting the overall Top Paid rank 190 and education Top Paid rank 12 into daily unit sales is unverified; the estimate is single digits to a dozen-plus per day.
  • TikTok's contribution to sales: The timing fits, but there's no attribution data. Word of mouth on other platforms (YouTube, Facebook fishing groups, angling clubs and training schools) was not found.
  • Whether ads were run: The ad library doesn't cover it.
  • Whether it holds after the season (late November to the spring season): Strong seasonality, likely to fall off the charts after December. Whether it expands to other states: watch the developer's next moves (IG says "Weitere Bundesländer sind in Planung," while the website says "Nur NRW, bewusst").
  • 11-02–03: 5 five-star reviews clustered within two or three days. Whether friends and family helped is unverified.
