The #1 Nigerian App Store utility-chart "Movie Box" is a fake: 1,600 ratings in one week, all riding on a borrowed name
What it is An iPhone app named Movie Box that was submitted as a compass or timer utility, but opens to nothing but movie posters, YouTube trailers, and ads.
Why it took off The original MovieBox is known to almost everyone in Nigeria and elsewhere. After it was banned in 2025, it couldn't be installed on iPhone, so users searched "movie box" in the App Store. This one's name is almost identical to the original and it launched earlier, so it ranked first.
CHow to play it: Stop building same-name clones. Look for a term that everyone in some country knows but that has no real App Store result on iPhone, then catch that search traffic with a legal free movie, short-drama, or clearly titled playlist app.

An iPhone app called "Movie Box : Movies & TV Series" has jumped into the top 25 of Nigeria's free overall chart in recent days, and it has held a top-three spot in utilities for years. It can't play any movies. It took off because the real MovieBox (the most popular pirate movie app in Africa) was banned and never had an official iPhone version, so people searched the name in the App Store, and this was the first result. The lesson is the approach: find a term "everyone knows, but the real thing can't be found on iPhone". This one is already taken, so copying it won't go far.
"Please give us back the original Movie Box"
In Nov 2026 2, a Nigerian user gave it a 1-star review: "Why does it keep sending me to YouTube? If I wanted movies from YouTube, I wouldn't have bothered downloading your app. Please bring back the original Movie Box." The next day someone else wrote: "This is a scam!!! It's not Movie Box at all, it's just ads and trailers."
Comments like these show up almost daily in review sections in Nigeria, Ghana, and South Africa, and many mention the same thing: "wasted my data". In these places, data is bought by the MB. Yet downloads haven't stopped. On Nov 6, it picked up 345 more ratings worldwide, its biggest day in two weeks.
What it is
The developer is Rayyan Ansari. The account has just this one App, and the official site is a Blogspot page. 2026-07-30 launch, updated Sep 2 to 2.0, with release notes that just say "Bug Fixes".
The store page title is "Movie Box : Movies & TV Series", but the description is about an app called Movana: compass, quiz, timer, step counter, notes. The category is Utilities, not Entertainment. Title and description don't match. Most likely it passed review as a utility app and then swapped the title and content to movies after launch (inference). A user in South Africa, October, complained the app "gets stuck on the 'do you know' page and there's no skip button". That's probably the quiz screen inside the utility shell (inference).
What users see once they open it, per the reviews: movie posters and info, a button that jumps to YouTube for trailers, and lots of ads. A Ghanaian user wrote: "It's fake, there are no movies to watch, whatever you search it only shows you the poster of that one film." A Nigerian user wrote: "Making iPhone users pay to watch movies is too much." The description may also include a paywall (how it charges is unverified).
Why it took off: the real one is blocked, and you can't find it on iPhone
The real MovieBox is an older pirated streaming platform: Hollywood films, Nollywood, Asian dramas, low data use, offline downloads. In Nigeria, Ghana, Kenya, South Africa and Pakistan it's how many people watch movies. It was distributed mainly through Android APKs and websites and was never properly on the App Store.
In 2025 August, Nigeria's copyright commission and the domain authority jointly blocked moviebox.ng (covered by Culture Custodian and Telecompaper). The US film association has also been chasing its domains. Earlier, local outlet Shockng wrote about "Netflix raising prices to ₦8,500, Nigerians flocking to Movie Box". In 2026, after Canal+ acquired MultiChoice and Showmax scaled back, there were even fewer cheap legal options (TheCondia, 2026-08).
The result: "MovieBox" is a word everyone knows locally, but iPhone users can't install it. TikTok has lots of "how to get MovieBox on iPhone" tutorials. @mrkaydepromoter in Ghana has 158k views on one video, @jatmedia has 129k on another. After watching a tutorial, the easiest next step is to open the App Store and search "movie box".
The app's name is almost identical to the original, which is literally called "MovieBox: Movies & TV Series" on its website. Other copycats from the same period added their own brand in front, like "Seekee : Movie Box" or "CineFlex - Moviebox", so their search match is weaker. This one launched at the end of July, earlier than most similar apps, and built up over ten thousand ratings. The higher it ranks, the more it downloads, and the more it downloads, the more stable the ranking.
Metric
| Metric | Metric | Sources |
|---|---|---|
| Global cumulative ratings | 9,143(10-28)→ 11,212(11-06) | App Store |
| New ratings over 7 days | 1,653; daily from 75 up to 345 | App Store |
| Countries charting each day | 42–52 | App Store charts |
| Nigeria | Overall free chart #8–24, Utilities category #1–3 (10-28 to 11-06 every day); 2,930 ratings, average 3.94 | App Store,11-06 |
| Other major markets (11-06) | Ghana overall free #35 / Utilities #3; Tanzania #33; Uganda #35; Pakistan #49; Kenya #65; South Africa #70 / Utilities #4 | App Store |
| Top Grossing | charted in no country | App Store |
Almost every chart-topper is from Africa and South Asia. Not one from Europe, North America, Japan, or Korea. The average still sits at 3.9 because beyond the bad reviews there are plenty of 5-star ratings with only one or two words, like "Good" or "Gg", or just a person's name. Whether the in-app prompt is pushing for five-star reviews, I can't tell.
Where the money comes from
All that's visible is ads, plus a possible paid entry point. It has never charted in the top grossing list, so in-app purchase revenue is probably small (estimate). Ad rates in small African countries are low, and users who install it, find it's fake and delete it quickly, so each user is only worth one or two ad impressions. The whole business logic is keeping search traffic flowing in and not caring about retention. Which ad network it uses and how much it earns can't be seen from outside.
Who it's competing with
| Product | Status | Compared with alternatives |
|---|---|---|
| Original MovieBox / MovieBoxPro | Install packages, websites, sideloading, not in the store | Actually plays films; it only borrowed the name |
| Seekee : Movie Box & TV Shows | Launched 2026-07-21, 147 ratings, best ranking free overall #65 | Same playbook, with the copycat's own brand prefix |
| Movie Box Drama Show, Movie Box: Movies & DramaPlay, CineFlex - Moviebox, Movie Box App | Launched from 8 to October, each with single digits to a dozen ratings | Copycats, not gaining traction yet |
| Cinema : Movie box & Showbox, PobreFlix : Moviebox | A few dozen ratings, mainly charting in Latin America and the Middle East | Same playbook, different region |
| Netflix, DStv Stream / Showmax | Legit paid services; Netflix is #64 overall free in Nigeria | Competing for people willing to pay |
| Short-drama apps like FlickReels, DramaWave, ReelShort | FlickReels is #1 overall free in South Africa | Real content, competing for the same people's time |
Over a dozen apps on the App Store have "movie box" in their name, and the playbook is much the same: submit as a utility to pass review, pull public film databases and YouTube trailers, and run ads. The approach isn't new either: in 2021 a developer publicly exposed fake streaming apps on the App Store.
How many people know about it
Very little. In the past two months almost nobody on X has mentioned this app, and no media has named it. TheCondia only mentioned in passing that searching MovieBox in the store still turns up same-named apps, but they can't play anything, only show trailers and info.
If it were you
Bottom line: don't copy it. This name is already taken by this app, its playbook deceives users, and Apple could pull it at any time for "misleading information" or a trademark complaint. It's also impossible to tell how much money it makes. What's worth taking away is how it finds traffic.
Who it's for: teams that know an emerging market and can license real or free content, or teams already building utility or film-catalog apps who want cheap search traffic.
Not for: anyone hoping to launch another "Movie Box" clone. Your 7th same-named app won't outrank the one that already has 11k ratings, and the takedown and trademark-complaint risk is just as real.
How to do it: reframe the idea as "find the search vacuum". Which names are known by everyone in a given country but have no official iPhone app? The reasons could be a block, only an Android version, web only, or the official team giving up on iOS. Once you find one, catch that audience with a legitimate product: free, licensed local-language films (ad-supported), short dramas, or a catalog app with a clearly stated purpose like "film info and watchlists". The name can match how users search, but don't pretend to be someone else.
How to get users: mainly store search, secondarily riding existing "how to install XX on iPhone" tutorials on TikTok and YouTube. Below those videos, make clear it's a legal alternative, or partner directly with local small creators who make these tutorials. Pick an obscure category and start with small countries: this time in Nigeria and Ghana, a few dozen ratings a day was enough to reach the top of the Utilities category.
Timing: gaps like this don't stay empty. Once Apple clears the copycats, or the original finds a way onto iOS, the search traffic will go to someone else. The window for "Movie Box" is probably just before it gets pulled (timing can't be predicted). For other terms, get in before someone else takes them.
Signs you read it wrong: (1) It gets pulled in the next month or two, search results switch to another copycat, and that copycat grows fast too: the traffic for this term is up for grabs, the valuable part is the term itself, and someone will keep doing it. (2) It charts in the top grossing list in Nigeria or South Africa: the paywall is really collecting money, and this business earns more than it looks. (3) A legitimate free streaming app in these countries ranks above it when you search "movie box" on the App Store: it means legally catching this audience is viable.

Why Movie Box : Movies & TV Series (iOS id 6793054307) charts
Short answer: it isn't a movie product. It's a utility app that grabbed the "Movie Box" name on the App Store. The real MovieBox is a pirated movie app that was big in Nigeria, Ghana, Kenya, South Africa and Pakistan (mostly Android APKs plus a website). Nigeria's Copyright Commission (NCC) took down moviebox.ng 2025-08, and the app stores pulled it too. On an iPhone, searching "movie box" in the App Store puts this app first, so downloads keep coming. It makes money from ads, YouTube trailer jumps and possibly a paywall. The bad reviews say it plainly: "This is not Movie Box at all."
1. Basic info (Apple lookup, 2026-11-06, ng store)
- Developer Rayyan Ansari (developer_id 6793054309), with this as the only app on the account. Bundle
com.mova.na. Website is a Blogspot page (raayanansari.blogspot.com). - First released 2026-07-30, latest version 2.0 (2026-09-02, release note "Bug Fixes"). Category Utilities, free, 4+.
- The store description is for "Movana": a compass, Q&A, timer, step counter and notes. It has nothing to do with the title "Movie Box : Movies & TV Series." This is a common move: submit as a utility to pass review, then switch the title and features to movies after launch.
- Ratings: 2,930 in the ng store, average 3.94. 11,212 total across all stores (our database, 2026-11-06).
2. Growth data (our appstore database)
- All-store ratings 9,143 (10-28) → 11,212 (11-06), up 2,069 in 9 days. New daily ratings went from 75 to 345,7 over 1,653 days.
- Charted in 42–52 stores a day. Nigeria is the home market: Top Free overall #8–24, Utilities #1–3 (charted every day from 10-28 to 11-06). ng gets 44–92 new ratings a day.
- Other stores (11-06): Ghana Top Free #35 / Utilities #3; Tanzania #33; Uganda #35; Niger #32; Pakistan #49; Kenya #65; South Africa #70 / Utilities #4; Senegal #89. Almost all African and South Asian. Nothing in Europe, the US, Japan or Korea.
- It has never charted in a Top Grossing list, so there's no clear sign of in-app purchase revenue. (That's all we can see; revenue is unverified.)
3. Why users come: demand the real MovieBox left behind
- The real MovieBox is an old pirate movie platform. It started in the iOS jailbreak community and later moved to Android APKs plus a website. Its catalog includes Hollywood, Nollywood and Asian shows, it's light on data and supports offline downloads. For many people in Africa it's the main way to watch (TheCondia 2026-08-20, thecondia.com/moviebox-alternatives-2026/).
- 2025-08, NCC and NiRA took down moviebox.ng (Culture Custodian 2025-08-04, culturecustodian.com/anti-piracy-wars-the-ncc-suspension-of-…; Telecompaper; Shockng posted about it on X x.com/Shockng/status/1952723130075451460). ACE and the MPA have also gone after its domains and iOS enterprise certificates.
- There was already coverage of "Netflix price hikes to ₦8,500 sending Nigerians to Movie Box" (shockng.com). Since Canal+ bought MultiChoice in 2026, Showmax has pulled back, leaving fewer cheap legal options (TheCondia).
- Result: "MovieBox" is a mass-market brand name locally, but there has never been an official iPhone version. TikTok is full of "How to download MovieBox on iPhone" tutorials (for example, Ghana's @mrkaydepromoter with 158k views and @jatmedia with 129k views; YouTube has similar ones). The most natural move for users is to search "movie box" in the App Store.
- TheCondia's words: searching "MovieBox" on Google Play and the App Store turns up apps with that name, but they aren't streaming. They just use the TMDb API to show trailers and info, and users complain in the reviews. That's exactly this kind of lookalike.
4. What users actually get (Apple review RSS, ng / za, 2026-09 to 11)
- "This is Fraudulent!!! The app is not Movie box at all. It's just for ads and trailers." (ng, 11-03,1 stars)
- "keeps directing me to YouTube especially to watch trailers… wasted my data" (ng, 11-01,1 stars)
- "Asking iPhone users to pay just to watch movie is diabolical" (ng, 10-30,1 stars). This suggests a paywall or subscription prompt (how it charges is unverified).
- "Please bring back the first movie bo[x]" (ng, 11-02). Maybe early versions played video, or maybe the user means the original MovieBox. Unverified.
- The za reviews from September also say the same thing: only ads and YouTube trailers, can't watch anything.
- Many of the 5-star reviews are one or two words ("Good", "Great", "Wow what an incredible app", "Damilola Ologoara"). They look like an in-app prompt for a rating, or fake. That could explain the 3.9 average, but there's no direct evidence.
- It doesn't keep users, and it's hard to make money from them. This product just harvests one-off search traffic, and users leave once they find out it's fake. Growth depends entirely on a steady flow of search traffic, not retention.
5. Competitors (most are also name-grabbing lookalikes)
Our database has 16 iOS apps with "movie box / moviebox" in the name (appstore.app_name, 2026-11-06). Same period, same playbook:
| Name | Developer | Launched | Scale (all-store ratings / new ratings over 7 days) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Seekee : Movie Box & TV Shows | Dravo Mylen | 2026-07-21 | Charted in 147 / 27,4 stores, best Top Free overall #65 |
| Movie Box Drama Show | Jemish Malaviya | 2026-10-17 | Charted in 10 / 8,14 stores |
| Movie Box: Movies & DramaPlay | SOFTEYE SEATOE | 2026-09-16 | 2 / 1,14 stores |
| CineFlex - Moviebox & TV Shows | ahmed moussaoui | 2026-08-12 | 1 |
| Movie Box App | Emily Potts | 2026-08-24 | 2 |
| Cinema : Movie box & Showbox | Soulaimane Bentaleb | 2026-04-12 | Charted in 26,27 stores |
| PobreFlix : Moviebox & TV | Badr Elbaz | 2025-11-25 | Charted in 16,45 stores |
| Movies Box & TV Show | (older version, id 1564334567) | 2021 | Reviews say the same thing: "fake, only YouTube" |
| Movies Box Pro(id6780392087) | — | 2026 | Positioned as a "movie catalog," going after the "MovieBox Pro" keyword |
The real demand to capture: the original MovieBox / MovieBoxPro (APKs, websites, sideloaded with Sideloadly, not in the stores). The legitimate alternatives are Netflix (ng Top Free #64), DStv Stream / Showmax, and short-drama apps (FlickReels at #1 in za Top Free, DramaWave, NetShort, ReelShort, DramaBox). They compete for the same people in the same stores.
6. What sets it apart from similar lookalikes
The approach is much the same as the others (pass review as a utility, wrap TMDb and YouTube trailers, show ads). The differences come down to three things:
- The name is the most accurate: "Movie Box : Movies & TV Series" is almost exactly how the original is named (the original is called "MovieBox: Movies & TV Series" in the stores and on its website, and Softonic uses that name too), so it gets the best search match. Others use names like "Seekee : Movie Box" or "CineFlex - Moviebox" with their own brand up front, which dilutes the keyword.
- Early mover momentum: launched at the end of July, right after the site shutdown 2025-08 and just as TikTok/YouTube tutorials on "how to install MovieBox on iPhone" started taking off. It hit #1 in the Nigeria Tools chart and piled up tens of thousands of ratings. Search rankings are getting more stable, creating a flywheel: higher rank → more downloads → more ratings → steadier rank.
- Low bar in Utilities: filing under Utilities instead of Entertainment makes it easy to reach the top of the category in small African markets, and the chart placement brings extra exposure.
So the edge isn't the product. It's name matching plus getting there first. That's really why it charted.
7. How many people know about it
- Revenue isn't public, and no media outlet or big X account has written about this app (an x-radar search for "movie box iphone" turned up 0 posts in about 60 days). TheCondia's article only mentions fake "MovieBox" apps in the store in general, without naming this one.
- But this playbook has long been public among small overseas-focused teams (Kosta Eleftheriou exposed fake streaming apps on the App Store 2021 years ago, and India Today covered them too). Copycats are already showing up: at least 6 new "Movie Box" lookalikes in the same period (see the table above), though none have gained traction yet.
8. What to borrow
- Look for a brand with mass recognition but no official iOS version: piracy, takedowns, or Android-only releases leave a gap in store search, and the traffic is already there. Brands like this are common in emerging markets (MovieBox, various APK tools).
- Target niche categories and small markets: the bar for Utilities charts in Africa and South Asia is very low, and a few dozen ratings can reach the top spots in a day.
- The cost: this deceives users. Reviews are bad, retention is poor, and Apple can pull it at any time over misleading metadata (4.3 / 2.3.1 guidelines) or a trademark complaint. There's no visible revenue on the page, so ROI can only be judged from ad impressions. The legitimate version is the same demand, legal supply: a free legal or ad-supported service, short dramas, or a TMDb-based movie catalog that states clearly what it is.
9. Still unclear
- How it actually makes money (ad networks, subscription price, whether a remote config switch is used) is unverified, since we didn't install the app.
- It's unclear whether "Please bring back the first movie box" means the app used to play video and was later changed, or refers to the original MovieBox.
- We can't see whether it's buying paid acquisition (Apple Search Ads bidding on "moviebox"). Our ad library only tracks products on our list.
- There's no direct evidence that the reviews are fake.
- Takedown risk: how long it lasts depends on when Apple reviews it, which can't be predicted.
