Is a 50 lei ride worth taking: a ride-hailing driver in Bucharest turned his math habits into a €14-a-month app
What it is A ride-calculation tool for Uber and Bolt drivers: when a request pops up, it shows in an iPhone floating window how much per kilometer and per hour is left after pickup and fuel costs, for about €14 a month.
Why it took off Romanian platforms take a high cut and drivers earn little, so a bad ride means a wasted trip. Drivers know exactly what a calculating tool is worth to them. It's also one of the few apps on iPhone that can read requests in real time. Plus the founder's own short videos of him doing the math while driving reached 138k views.
BHow you could follow suit Copy the approach in another country: pick markets where platforms like Bolt, inDrive, or Grab take a high cut, build a version in the local language that supports local platforms and also runs real-time floating windows on iPhone, and get users through local driver videos showing per-ride math and driver groups. Charge €10–15 a month.

Romanian rideshare driver Cristian-Ionel Chelemen built an app that, in the few seconds when an Uber or Bolt ride pops up, shows on the iPhone screen how much is left per km and per hour after subtracting pickup and fuel. Three months after launch it has only 27 ratings on the App Store, yet it has stayed in the top 30 of Romania's business Top Grossing chart. It's a small business with a clear playbook, and many countries are still open.
A video with 138k views
On 2026 Jul 9, the TikTok account @ridego.online posted a video captioned: "Ever been unsure whether to take a ride? I have, many times." It shows an Uber request on a phone, with a small card beside it converting the fare into an hourly rate. By Nov 6 the video had 138k views, the account's highest. Two days earlier another post was more direct: "A 50 lei ride may be better than it looks. RideGo puts it at roughly 100 lei per hour. You, would you take it?"
The person posting is a driver himself. On 10 Aug he posted a Bucharest driving vlog on another account, @ridegoapp (54k views), explaining where the app came from: "A ride looks good at first glance. Factor in time, distance and costs, and it can turn out to be something completely different."
What it actually does
In the app, the driver enters their car once: fuel or electric, consumption per 100 km, fuel price, fixed costs (car loan, insurance), plus thresholds, such as what per-km rate counts as a bad ride. Then they turn on iPhone's "Screen Broadcast", and RideGo reads the Uber or Bolt request and shows, in a picture-in-picture window:
- earnings per km and per hour;
- total distance and time including pickup and trip (the platform's fare covers only the trip; the pickup kilometers are unpaid);
- what's left after vehicle costs, marked green, yellow or red against your thresholds, with optional voice alerts.
Results can also be cast to in-car browsers in Teslas, BYDs and similar cars. It doesn't tap accept for you, and the store page states it has no affiliation with Uber or Bolt.
Pricing is pure subscription: 7 days for 34.99 lei, 30 days for 69.99 lei (about €14), or 399.99 lei a year (official site pricing). The Black Friday annual price dropped to 359 lei (TikTok, 11-03).
The hard part is iOS. iPhone doesn't let one app read another app's screen, so similar tools in Eastern Europe are mostly Android-only (floating window plus accessibility service screen reading). Poland's free tool RideHelper on iOS can only send notifications via Shortcuts, with no live overlay. RideGo uses screen broadcast plus picture-in-picture to get close to the Android floating-window experience on iPhone. Romanian drivers on iPhone have almost no second option.
27 ratings, how it reached the business chart
First, see how small it is. Launched on iOS in 28 Jul, by Nov 6 it had 27 ratings with an average of 3.9, nearly all from the Romanian store, adding only 28 more from Oct 6 to Nov 3 (App Store, 11-06). The Android version has more users: 5,000+ downloads on Google Play, rated 4.6 (Play page, 11-06).
Yet from Oct 28 to Nov 6 it sat between #12 and #28 on Romania's business Top Grossing chart, peaking at #3 on Nov 12, alongside LinkedIn and Adobe (App Store Romania business Top Grossing chart). The reason is simple: that chart's bar is very low. A €14 ride or a €80 annual subscription needs only a few dozen paying users to chart.
There's another interesting wave. The app added 21 languages, and starting late October it kept charting one country after another in the Business Top Grossing lists of Hungary, Lithuania, Slovakia, Estonia, Finland and Portugal. Each one peaked on day one (Finland 11-01 at #20, Lithuania 10-30 at #21), then slid every day and was past #100 within a few days. All of these stores rate it 0. The most likely explanation is that a few subscriptions per new country were enough to push it onto a small store's chart, and then no one kept buying (inferred). Only Romania kept paying.
Revenue isn't public. Judging from chart position, a rough guess is a few hundred to a thousand-plus euros a month (estimate, unverified).
Why drivers are willing to pay
In Romania, Uber and Bolt take roughly 25% commission, and a full-time driver grosses about 6,500 to 7,500 lei a month (estimate from local accounting firm rsexpertconsulting.ro). A 4 km pickup for a 6 km trip, taken repeatedly, means a day of unpaid work. Whether a tool is worth it, drivers can work out in money terms themselves.
Reviews show it:
"At first I was skeptical, bought one month, and next time I'll probably just buy the year." (App Store Romania, 9-01) "A lot of rides look unprofitable, and using this app I found out it's not really like that." (9-30) "Especially when you're on one ride and another comes in, you can tell right away whether it's worth it." (9-09, original English review)
The complaints are specific too. A 2-star review says: "Pickup 3–4 km, trip 6 km, it calls it a good ride, what good ride. And it's recording the screen the whole time, no more privacy on my phone." (9-20) Another 1-star review says an update required personal info, and support yelled at them (11-01). Positive reviews repeatedly mention "support replies on WhatsApp within minutes", which shows the developer is carrying support himself.
Where users come from
Content is almost entirely self-made:
- Two TikTok accounts: @ridego.online (796 followers) and @ridegoapp (2,540 followers), both real driving footage with ride-by-ride math. Top-performing ones include 7-09 with 138k views, 8-10 with 54k, and 9-30 with 33k; 10-11 with 22k answers "Uber now shows per-km prices itself, is RideGo still useful?" (TikTok, 11-06).
- Suspected paid promotion: two Black Friday videos in Nov 3 got 27k and 10k views but only 39 and 5 likes, far below its organically growing videos, which suggests paid boosting (inference).
- YouTube channel: 561 subscribers, yet a few videos have 14k to 29k views, which also looks like ad spend (inference). The Nov 6 iOS update added a toggle for "share ad measurement data with Google", indicating Google ad attribution is in use.
- Facebook page and driver groups: ride-by-ride demo videos with the hook "try 6 rides free". Romanian drivers gather heavily in FB groups.
- Official site: ridego.online in Romanian and English, with an algorithm explanation page and a Tesla casting page.
It's expanding: in Nov 5 it pushed a new service, FlotaOnline, which exports Uber and Bolt invoices and generates the e-invoices Romania's tax authority requires, for 19.99 lei a month, free for annual RideGo subscribers (TikTok, 11-05). The tool first handles whether to accept a ride, then handles tax reporting, which raises how much each driver pays per year.
Who it's competing with
| Competitors | Where | How RideGo differs |
|---|---|---|
| Gridwise | US, iOS/Android, about 1.2M installs on Play | Mileage and income tracking; doesn't intervene in the seconds of accepting a ride; no Bolt support |
| Mystro, Para, Maxymo | US | Early ride evaluation, but only Uber/Lyft/food delivery; no Bolt, no Eastern European languages |
| RideHelper | Poland, free | Floating bar on Android; iOS only a beta relying on notifications, no live overlay |
| Similar apps by Croatian drivers | Croatia, Android | Recruiting testers in FB groups in August, not yet listed |
| SmartNeto Ride Analysis | Romania, iOS/Android, launched 9-08 | Name, copy and features almost copied; 7-day free trial, 6 ratings |
| Uber's built-in per-km price | Uber's driver app in Romania | Counts only the trip, not pickup, and doesn't deduct costs; no Bolt |
The category was validated in the US long ago; in Eastern Europe it's mainly small Android tools. RideGo holds the intersection of "Romanian language + Bolt support + live overlay on iPhone". The moat is shallow: local companies have already copied it, and Uber is building the shallowest layer (per-km price) into its own app.
If it were you
In one line: follow its path in another country. In markets served by Bolt, inDrive, DiDi and Grab, tools that support local platforms, speak the local language and can read rides live on iPhone mostly don't exist yet. The business is small but real, the kind one person can run to a few thousand euros a month (estimate).
Who it suits: people who can write iOS (screen broadcast and picture-in-picture have to be mastered), ideally who drive rideshare or know someone who does, and who can make ride-by-ride math videos for local-language TikTok and FB groups.
Who it doesn't suit: people aiming for a big market and big revenue; people unwilling to do support and chat with drivers back and forth on WhatsApp; people who only want the US, where Mystro, Para and Gridwise are already active.
How to do it:
- Pick the market: look for countries where Bolt, inDrive and similar platforms take high commissions, drivers are mostly independent operators, and iPhone share is meaningful, such as Poland, the Baltic states, Portugal, or inDrive markets in Latin America and Grab markets in Southeast Asia. Search the local App Store first to confirm there's no iOS tool with a live overlay.
- Do one thing only: in the seconds when a request pops up, show net per-km and per-hour income including pickup and costs, plus a traffic-light verdict. Car casting and tax invoices come later, to raise the average order value.
- Build for both Android and iOS. Android has more users, iOS has less competition, and you can see paid rankings on iOS.
- Price along RideGo's lines: €10–15 a month, with a discount for annual. In small countries with low chart bars, a few dozen subscriptions can chart on the business Top Grossing chart, which adds store exposure.
How to acquire users: film short real-footage videos yourself or hire a local driver asking "is this 50 fare really worth it", one ride per video; join local driver FB and Telegram groups and pull people in with "try a few rides free"; once organic hits appear, spend a little on promotion.
When, before what: the earlier the better, ideally to claim a country before the first half of 2027. SmartNeto copied RideGo in just over a month, and the same thing will happen in every market; Uber is also gradually building this kind of information into its own app.
What would show you're wrong: Apple reviews start rejecting apps that use screen broadcast to read other apps; or Uber and Bolt show net per-km income including pickup directly in your market; or after a month of videos and free trials many people try it but few convert to paid. That would mean local drivers won't pay for the math, and it's time to switch markets.

2026-11-06 · channel ios · developer Cristian-Ionel Chelemen (Romanian indie dev; this is the only app on the account)
One line
A ride-earnings analysis tool built by a Romanian rideshare driver for Uber/Bolt. On iOS it uses Screen Broadcast (ReplayKit) to read the order popups from the Uber/Bolt driver app and shows, in a picture-in-picture floating window, live "earnings per km / per hour, total distance and time including pickup, and net profit after vehicle costs." It can speak results aloud and be cast to the Tesla car browser. Subscription only: 7-day 34.99 lei / 30-day 69.99 lei (about €14) / yearly 399.99 lei (pricing from the data card's official site; Black Friday annual fee 359 lei, see its TikTok 11-03 video).
Data (first, how big is it really)
- Launched on iOS 2026-07-28, current version 1.2.18 (2026-11-06 just updated), total ratings 27, average 3.9 (iTunes lookup, ro store, 2026-11-06). Almost all ratings come from the Romanian store (ro 27, pl 1, others 0). Over 3 months, 27 ratings; from 10-28 to 11-06 it only gained 3 — downloads are very small.
- Revenue signal: Romania Business Top Grossing has held at #12~#28 across 10-28~11-06 (peak #12,11-06 on 11-03 #23, sitting between LinkedIn, Adobe, and a bunch of PDF scanners). The Romania Business Top Grossing bar is low; a small number of €14/month subscriptions is enough. (appstore library chart_rank)
- A distinctive "wave": it appears in Business Top Grossing country by country, peaking on day one and sliding each day — Hungary 10-29 #58→11-04 #199; Lithuania 10-30 #21→11-05 #98 (Top Free hit #11-01 at the same time 9); Slovakia 10-30 #32→11-04 #133; Estonia 10-31 #27→11-05 #76; Finland 11-01 #20→11-06 #127; Portugal 11-04 #53→11-06 #135. These countries all have 0 ratings. Reading: each new country (the app is localized into 21 languages) gets a few subscriptions that push it onto a low-bar small-country chart, then it drops without sustained purchases — only Romania has real, ongoing revenue; the rest is noise from testing new storefronts. (appstore library, chart_rank)
- Android version (online.ridego.lite): Google Play 5K+ downloads, rated 4.6, about 48 reviews; the page says published 2026-08-06, updated 11-04 (play.google.com page, scraped 2026-11-06). But its TikTok has been promoting RideGo since Jul 7, suggesting the Android version (or beta) came before iOS. Android is clearly bigger than iOS.
- Bottom line: this is a Romania-local tool with a few thousand users, held up on small-country charts by high-ticket subscriptions, not a hit.

| Uber's built-in features | Big-company features | 2026 | — | According to RideGo's own 10-11 video "Uber are acum lei/km… mai are rost RideGo?", Uber Romania already shows per-km price on orders; but it excludes pickup distance, doesn't deduct vehicle costs, and Bolt doesn't show it |
| Web / spreadsheet calculators (onlinexpert.ro, cabvibe.pl, etc.) | Web | — | — | Calculate taxes / weekly earnings after the fact; they don't step in during the seconds when you accept a ride |
Conclusion: the category of "on-screen net profit including pickup and cost deduction in the seconds you accept a ride" has existed in the US for a long time (Mystro/Para/Maxymo); in Eastern Europe it's mostly small Android tools. RideGo's position is: Romanian language + Bolt support + real-time floating window on iOS.
Growth tactics (evidence)
- Own TikTok dual accounts + paid promotion (confirmed). @ridego.online (796 followers, 87 videos): in Jul 9 a post "are you also torn about whether to take this ride" got 138K views; in Jul 7 another got 18K. @ridegoapp (2,540 followers, 225 videos): in Aug 10 a vlog "is driving Uber/Bolt in Bucharest still worth it" got 54K; 9-30 another got 33K, and 10-11 another 22K. 11-03 the two Black Friday videos got 27K / 10K views but only 39 / 5 likes — the views-to-likes ratio is far below its organic videos (138K/561), a typical TikTok Promote / Spark paid-boost pattern (TikHub, 2026-11-06 scrape; inferred). Our TikTok ad library (which only covers listed products) didn't catch it.
- YouTube channel RideGo.Online (confirmed): 561 subscribers, 98 videos, but several recent ones at 14K / 21K / 29K views, disproportionate to subscriber count — likely Google ad promotion (YouTube channel page). The 11-06 iOS update notes add a "share usage statistics and ad measurement with Google" toggle — meaning Google's ad attribution SDK is integrated and they are running, or about to run, Google App Campaigns (App Store update notes; inferred).
- Facebook page + driver groups (confirmed): the "RideGo App" page posts "I tested the latest version, order by order" videos with the pitch "6 free rides to try" (facebook.com/p/RideGo-App-61592091713730). Romanian drivers are very active in FB groups.
- Driver influencer reviews (partially confirmed): on TikTok there's @pauldsk27 "RideGo vs Bolt & Uber: is it honest to drivers?"; the data card claims multiple Romanian driver bloggers on TikTok/Instagram/Facebook reviewed it, but I only verified a few posts.
- Website SEO (confirmed): ridego.online has bilingual Romanian/English landing pages, a "how it's calculated" explainer page, and a Tesla car-browser page; searches for "RideGo" and "aplicatie soferi Uber Bolt" rank near the top (Jina search).
- Limited-time / holiday promo: Black Friday annual fee 359 lei (iOS) / 351 lei (Android) (TikTok 11-03).
- Reviews: On the Romanian iOS store, 6 5-star reviews landed in a tight window of 9-20~9-25 (9-21~9-22 of them 4). Many mention "support replied on WhatsApp within minutes" — the founder is doing customer support personally, and may also be nudging older users to rate (unverified). Another 1-star review says support was rude (11-01), suggesting a solo indie dev is handling it all by hand.

Why it took off
- Real need + users willing to pay: Uber/Bolt commission in Romania is about 25%, and driver income is low (full-time gross 6,500–7,500 lei/month, rsexpertconsulting.ro). Whether a ride is worth it (5 km of pickup for 3 km of trip) directly decides if the day is profitable, so the tool's value is easy to price; reviews say "rides I thought weren't worth it actually were" and "bought one month first, next time the annual plan" (iOS ro reviews 9-01). €14/month is acceptable for people who drive every day, which is why 27 ratings can still sustain a chart position.
- Built a native iOS experience nobody else has: iOS doesn't let apps read other apps' screens, so Eastern European competitors mostly only ship on Android (RideHelper's iOS version relies on Shortcuts + notifications only). RideGo uses Screen Broadcast + a picture-in-picture overlay + voice readouts, delivering something close to Android's floating-window experience on iPhone. For iPhone drivers in Romania, there's almost no alternative.
- The founder is a driver, and the content is built around driving: TikTok/YouTube are real driving footage with clear-as-day examples like "this ride paid 50 lei but was really worth 100 lei/hour." The breakout video hit 138K views. In a small market of tens of thousands of drivers, that kind of content has enough reach.
- Localization: Romanian language, lei, Bolt support, PFA (sole-trader status), and other local context that US tools won't bother with. They're still building SPV e-invoice export (TikTok 11-05).
Differentiation
The real differentiator is "real-time order overlay on iOS + Bolt + Romanian language and a local cost model." Mystro, Para, and Gridwise in the US don't support Bolt or Eastern Europe, and most Eastern European competitors are Android-only. Part of why it's been spotted is that it shows up on the iOS Top Grossing chart, precisely because there's no competition there. But its Android version has more users (5K+), where the differentiation is weaker (more Android competitors), so it relies on content and localization. The differentiation isn't deep: SmartNeto 2026-09-08 has already copied it (even the name, "Ride Analysis," and nearly identical copy). And Uber itself has started showing price per km, which erodes the most shallow layer of value (Uber's answer is to emphasize pickup distance and expense deduction).
How many people can see it
Still hardly anyone knows about it: no public revenue, X 0 discussion, no media coverage. It only circulates in Romanian driver communities on TikTok/FB. But locals have already noticed it (SmartNeto).
Takeaways
- Playbook template: pick a local market where "platform commission is high and drivers are sole traders," build a tool that judges ride earnings the moment an order comes in, acquire users with local-language + real driving short videos, and charge €10–15/month via subscription. Proven in the US; large gaps remain in Eastern Europe, Latin America, and Southeast Asia (Bolt, inDrive, DiDi, Grab).
- iOS technical path: ReplayKit screen broadcast + picture-in-picture overlay + voice readouts can work around the "iOS can't read the screen with a floating overlay" restriction, making the iOS version a rare product.
- Low-bar chart strategy: in small markets like Romania or the Baltics, where the Business grossing bar is very low, a few dozen subscriptions can land you in the top 30 of the category chart, giving you extra store visibility.
- In-car browser casting (Tesla / BYD) is a small but easily shareable selling point.
Unknowns
- Actual subscriber count and revenue (can only be inferred from small-country charts; estimated at a few hundred to a thousand-plus euros a month, unverified).
- Whether TikTok / YouTube / Google are running paid acquisition and how big the budget is (likes/views ratios and SDK are inferences; the ad library didn't pick anything up).
- Whether reading Uber/Bolt screens via screen broadcast will get it rejected in App Review or restricted by the platforms (the description deliberately says "no auto-accepting orders, not affiliated with Uber/Bolt").
- Whether the waves on each country's chart are organic storefront launches or ad tests.
