Two 18-second Xiaohongshu videos, each getting 40k likes: how a solo developer's "photo sticker diary" took off
What it is An iOS diary app: it cuts people, pets, and food out of photos as stickers, lets you arrange them freely on a page, and exports the page as a moving Live Photo.
Why it took off The finished product screen-recorded in 18 seconds is already a recommendation video. In mid-October, a batch of small accounts pushed it on Xiaohongshu and Douyin using the same "an app you won't want to delete" pitch. Two videos each got about 40k likes, and the ratings climbed steadily afterward.
BHow you could follow Don't copy the product, copy the promotion approach: make a vertical version for the audience that shares the most (pets, babies, travel), or use TikTok faceless accounts to take the same playbook overseas, where there are many similar apps but nobody promotes them.

Dayturn (Chinese name 翻翻日记) is an iOS diary app launched in mid-August by an individual developer in the China store: it cuts people, pets, and food out of photos as stickers, lets you arrange them freely on a page, and exports the page as a moving Live Photo. Less than three months after launching in China, it has 263 ratings and sits at 140–170 on the Lifestyle Top Grossing chart. Not big, but the path to traction is clear: make the product shareable, then get a batch of small accounts to push the same pitch on Xiaohongshu and Douyin. Below: how it got going, how much money it makes, and whether you can follow the same path.
Two videos of the same length
At 9 a.m. on Oct 14, 2026, a Xiaohongshu account called "momo" posted a 18-second video titled "Another app I can't bear to delete from my desktop." The first line of the caption: "Diary's a cute design, I'm into it: food from your photos becomes stickers you can stick anywhere." By Nov 6, the video had 44,741 likes, 33,662 saves, and 2,167 shares.
Two days later, on Oct 16 at 9 in the morning, another account, "執念", posted a 18-second video titled "Turn photos into a moving Live," with the caption: "A moving diary is too cute. Dayturn can export collages as Live Photos. Now that the food I shoot turns into stickers, I want to keep it even more." By Nov 6 it had 39,355 likes and 34,749 saves.
The two videos were the same length, posted at nearly the same time, with the same selling point, and both had the same hashtags: #翻翻日记 #小众软件 #宝藏软件 #APP推荐. Another giveaway: each had around forty thousand likes, but only 82 and 68 comments, and most of those were tagging friends. Of the few real comments visible, one said "too expensive" and another said "Samsung's Gallery already does this."
Saves nearly equal likes, which means viewers were bookmarking it as something to download later. That's the typical pattern for tool-type seeding posts. The low comment count could mean it was paid boosting (e.g., Xiaohongshu's promotion tool). Inference, cannot be verified.
What it is
The store page's first line is "Writing a diary can also be a pleasure." When you open it, you don't face a blank page: pick a photo, the system cuts out the main subject as a sticker, then add a sentence, a weather or mood sticker, a location, and move and rotate them freely to build the day's page. Newer versions add a Live Photo canvas (pages can move) and a monthly flipbook (members can export as video or PDF).
Cutouts use the on-device capability built into iPhone. The store page says "photo analysis is done on the device," the diary is stored only on the phone by default, there's no sign-up, and no ads. These lines later became the "good feeling" pitch in the promotional posts. The cost is the bar: requires iOS 26 or later to install.
Pricing is three Dayturn Pro tiers, unlocking themes, Pro stickers, unlimited photo stickers, fonts and paper (App Store China store prices, 11-06):
| Plan | Pricing |
|---|---|
| Monthly | ¥18 |
| Yearly | ¥48 |
| Lifetime one-time purchase | ¥78 |
The one-time purchase is only ¥30 more than the annual plan, clearly aimed at China-store users who don't like subscriptions.
How big it is now
- Ratings: the China store went from 10-28 to 178, while 11-06 went from 263; it gained 85 over 10 days, 4–18 a day, with no dip (App Store rating counts, 10-28 to 11-06). Average rating 4.7. The US store has only 4 ratings, even though it added Spanish, French, German, Portuguese and Italian in September.
- Revenue: never charted overall, but has sat at #141–171 in the China store's Lifestyle Top Grossing. That spot is an easy bar: Lifestyle apps ranked #150–200 the same day had a median of only 463 ratings. It's clearly making money, but small money.
- Iteration: 8-17 launched, and 11-03 has been updated to 1.6.2, over a dozen versions in three months.
The reviews are short on candor, but two things stand out: someone wrote "downloaded four apps and ended up keeping this one" (10-21, five stars); another said "reinstalled four times and got four notebooks, and I can't delete them" (10-21, one star), and "stickers in the diary shift around" (9-26, three stars). An indie dev shipping fast also means plenty of bugs.
Where the traffic comes from: one script, many accounts
Search "翻翻日记" on Xiaohongshu (RedNote) and most of the first page is seeding posts from Oct 13 to Nov 3. The titles all run the same script in different wording:
- "An app you won't want to delete, and it's genuinely good"
- "Another app I can't bring myself to delete from my desktop"
- "Some apps, once opened, you don't want to close"
- "Stitching photos into a moving Live Photo"
The pitch is always the same three points: photos become stickers, lots of stickers, and you can export a Live Photo. One account, "点点", posted 4 times between Oct 14 and 25; the title "Stitching photos into a moving Live Photo" was used by both "執念" and "点点"; and "An app you won't want to delete, and it's genuinely good" appears word for word on Douyin (10-17) and Xiaohongshu (10-27), by different authors.
Douyin returns 7 videos, from creators with only 6 to 94 followers, yet individual videos pull in over 1,500 likes. Tiny followings with high engagement look like a matrix of ordinary-person side accounts. Whether they were boosted with Dou+ is unverified.
From outside, you can't tell whether the developer found these posters directly or paid a KOC agency, or how much it cost. The timing is visible: the push was concentrated in mid-October, both 40,000-like hits landed that same week, and ratings rose steadily every day afterward.
There's an earlier signal too: on Aug 17, the day it launched, a Xiaohongshu account called "BiBibiubiu" posted "Sharing an app I've been loving lately" with 310 likes and 92 comments. The copy read "no ads, no pop-ups, no account required, completely free to use". The tone is nothing like the later wave and reads like a launch post from the developer or a friend (inferred).
Beyond that, media, X, Sspai and Zhihu's diary-app reviews never mentioned it. Almost the only people who know it are those who saw those few videos.
Why this product suits this kind of push
The key isn't seeding itself, it's that what the app produces is already seeding material. A page of collage or a moving Live Photo a user makes is a 18-second screen recording, a video with no extra shoot. On Xiaohongshu, "beautiful meals", "plog" and "digital journals" have long been evergreen content, and the target user is young women who love documenting daily life.
The contrast makes it clearer. yoi, which also does "collage + animated photo", launched 10 days earlier, has 283 China-store ratings, and gained only 11 in the last 7 days, about a sixth of 翻翻日记's pace. Overseas, a batch of sticker journals has appeared since July 2026 (Stikoo, Niello, Vinette, Stickoi, Jou, daplit), most with 0 to 1 ratings. Same idea, and the ones nobody promoted never took off.
Who it's competing with
| Product | Scale | How it compares |
|---|---|---|
| iOS built-in Journal + photo subject lifting | Preinstalled | The capabilities are there, just not built as a collage journal; if Apple ever does, this category gets hard |
| iCity, EMMO, 吾记 | China store 270k–380k ratings | Long-established text diary with a big user base, but not photo-first |
| 手帐罐头 | China store 1,163 ratings | Journal templates plus a progression system, doesn't make stickers from your own photos |
| yoi - Plog | China store 283 ratings, launched 8-07 | Closest in direction, but a graphics tool rather than a diary, and growing much more slowly |
| 记一杯 | China store 7,614 ratings, #7 in Lifestyle Top Grossing | Same "photo to sticker + calendar" pitch, but only for drinks; proof that people in China will pay for "sticker-style logging" |
| 来福贴贴, ArtStamp | 1,530 / 11,633 rating | Pure cutout sticker tools, not diaries |
| A batch of overseas sticker journals | 0–1 ratings | Same idea, no traction |
No direct copy spotted in the China store yet. iPlog, launched Oct 31 ("photo collage, photo-to-sticker, collage journal"), is close in direction but has no traction yet.
If it were you
B: worth trying, but what you copy is the promotion playbook, not the product. Subject lifting is a system capability, and a collage canvas can be built by one person in a few weeks, so there's no moat; the same product with no push is zero. What it proves is that an app whose output is inherently shareable, plus a matrix of side accounts running one messaging script, can drive traffic on Xiaohongshu. The revenue ceiling looks low: #140–170 on Top Grossing is small money.
Who it suits: indie devs who can build polished iOS interfaces and are willing to spend money and time on Xiaohongshu or TikTok ordinary-person seeding; ideally someone who is themselves a user of this kind of content and knows what visuals get saved.
Who it doesn't suit: anyone who just wants to ship and wait for organic store traffic (yoi and the overseas batch are the result); anyone hoping to make a living from it (the current position can't support a salary); anyone who can't keep up with new iOS 26 capabilities.
How to do it: pick one of three paths.
- Go vertical with a niche audience. 记一杯 reached Lifestyle Top Grossing #7 by only logging drinks. Pets, babies, travel, outfits: pick whichever group photographs the most and most wants to show off, and build a sticker diary for them, with sticker libraries and templates drawn specifically for that niche.
- Go overseas with a localized version. The overseas sticker journals all died for lack of promotion. Run the same playbook on TikTok with ordinary-person accounts in English-speaking markets, with the same three pitch points: photos become stickers, they move, no writing required.
- Do what it hasn't done well: basic issues like deleting notebooks and stickers shifting out of place, plus the monthly flip-book it only half-built, which could extend into physical printing and gifting.
How to acquire users: keep each video to 15–20 seconds, show only the finished product, and make one selling point per video; use titles in a voice like "an app you won't want to delete" with fixed hashtags; post from several accounts within a week or two and bet that one hits. Before launch, have one or two real users write launch posts to build the first batch of ratings.
Timing: this playbook works now because no one in the China store does it yet. Copycats like iPlog are already live, so the window is measured in months; the first seeding wave needs to go out before the 2027 Spring Festival.
What would prove you wrong: (1) if 翻翻日记's rating growth drops to two or three a day after November and it falls out of the top 200 on Top Grossing, that wave was one-off and traffic stops when the spending does; (2) if you post 20 to 30 notes and none passes 1,000 likes, the script is already overused on Xiaohongshu; (3) if Apple adds photo-sticker collage to the iOS Journal app, the whole category gets flattened.

One line
A photo-first visual diary by a solo Chinese indie dev (Qianyun Chen, who has only this one app): it cuts people, pets and food out of photos into stickers, then lets you freely collage them with mood, weather and location stickers, exporting Live Photos and monthly flip books. It took off mainly through a batch of small accounts seeding notes on Xiaohongshu and Douyin with a shared script, one Xiaohongshu note going viral (39k likes). The product itself is pretty and shareable, which is what makes seeding work. Revenue comes from Pro subscriptions plus one-time purchase, and it is stuck just inside the low bar of China Lifestyle Top Grossing ranks 140–170.
1. Data (our library + Apple lookup)
- 2026-08-17 launched. 2026-10-28 China store ratings are 178,2026-11-06: 263,10 days plus 85 more, roughly 4–18 per day (appstore library app_day, cn). Up +67 over the last 7 days. 2026-11-06 lookup shows 266 China store ratings at 4.72 stars; the US store has only 4 ratings.
- Charts: China Lifestyle (6012) Top Grossing #2026-10-28 143, #2026-11-06 171; hovering between 141–171; never on the overall chart. Singapore and Belarus occasionally show on Lifestyle Top Grossing (sg 89–182, by 36–115), but those storefronts have only 0 ratings, so a few purchases are enough to chart, which tells us little.
- Benchmark: the 2026-11-06 China store Lifestyle Top Grossing chart, positions 150–200, has a median rating count of 463 (App Store library). Holding that spot doesn't take much revenue, so "it's making money" can be confirmed, but only small money.
- Iteration: current version 1.6.2 (2026-11-03), already at 3.x less than 1.6 months after launch. New versions added monthly flip books (members can export video / PDF), a Live Photo canvas, and a tall vertical widget for iOS 27. Supports 10 languages and the website has Chinese, English, Japanese, Korean and other versions, but overseas traction hasn't come.
- Business model: free download; Dayturn Pro comes in monthly, yearly and lifetime one-time purchase tiers, unlocking themes, Pro stickers, unlimited photo-subject stickers, fonts, paper and icons.

Takeaway: this niche isn't empty. China has long-established text diaries, journal-template apps and cutout tools, and overseas 2026 H2 saw a wave of sticker journals. Fanfan Diary sits at the intersection of all of them: a diary + stickers cut from your own photos + free collage + Live Photo / flip book export. In China, the only one I've seen that does all of these well and is gaining traction is this one.
3. Where users come from
Xiaohongshu / Douyin creator seeding matrix (confirmed, main channel). 2026-11-06 searched 'Fanfan Diary' via TikHub:
- Of the first page of 20 Xiaohongshu results, most are seeding notes posted by 2026-10-13 to 11-03. Titles and bodies are variations on one script: 'a small app I can't bear to delete, it's really something', 'another app I can't delete from my desktop', 'some apps, once opened, you don't want to close (lol)', 'turn photos into moving Lives'. The three selling points are fixed: photo-to-sticker, lots of stickers, Live Photo export. Hashtags are fixed as #翻翻日记 #小众软件 #宝藏软件 #APP推荐.
- There's clear repeat posting from one account and cross-platform reuse: account 'Dian Dian' 10-14, 10-19, 10-20, 10-25 posted 4 notes; the title 'turn photos into moving Lives' was used by both '執念' (10-15) and 'Dian Dian' (10-19); 'a small app I can't bear to delete, it's really something' appears word for word on Douyin (Yunzhong Helu, 10-17) and Xiaohongshu (Qixu Chu, 10-27).
- Hit: Xiaohongshu '執念' 10-15 note 'turn photos into moving Lives' 39,350 likes / 34,741 saves; the note by 'Xiaohongshu 672FB2E0' 10-13 has 2,226 likes; the note by '@不期而遇' 10-20 has 1,157 likes. The rest are mostly tens to hundreds of likes.
- Douyin: found 7 videos from creators with only 6–94 followers, yet individual videos get 1,575 / 1,683 likes (10-13, 10-17). Very few followers but solid engagement looks like a matrix of small lookalike accounts, possibly with paid boosting (Dou+ / Xiaohongshu boost), boosting is unverified.
- Timing lines up: the seeding clustered in mid-October, and after late October ratings grew steadily by 5–18 per day. The library only started recording from 10-28, so whether there was a spike in mid-October can't be seen.
Cold start (inferred). Xiaohongshu user 'BiBibiubiu' posted '(sharing) an app I've been loving lately' on launch day 2026-08-17, with 310 likes and 92 comments. The copy reads 'no ads, no pop-ups, no account registration, fully free to use', which differs from the later script-based posts and looks like a launch post by the developer or someone close to them (unverified). Douyin account 'What did you say' 8-31, 9-13 also posted, an early test.
No channels found. X (x-radar: 90 posts in the last 0 days), media, and Sspai / Zhihu reviews don't mention it. A Zhihu piece, "Tested 20 diary apps," doesn't include it. No evidence of Apple Search Ads or feed ads turned up (our ad library doesn't cover the China store, so no results doesn't mean no spend).
Store search. The Chinese name "翻翻日记" collides with "翻翻 - 记录生活,打印美好" (id1481163969), an established print app for photo book printing, so searching "翻翻" mixes them up. Can't tell whether the overlap is deliberate or coincidence.
4. Why it took off
- The content is naturally suited to Xiaohongshu. The output is a scrapbook-style collage page with cut-out stickers of the user's own photos. It can also export moving Live Photos, so a screenshot or screen recording is ready-made seeding material. The top post's selling point was exactly "diary that moves" (39k likes).
- Seeding follows a uniform playbook, not luck. Same script, same tags, multiple accounts posting the same content repeatedly, synced across Xiaohongshu and Douyin, with a concentrated push in mid-October. The cost is probably amateur accounts or low-cost KOCs, and the money comes back through Pro subscriptions and one-time purchases.
- Lowers the barrier to journaling. "No blank page to face, no streak required": one photo plus one line makes a page. The target user is young women who love posting pretty meals and everyday life, not people who write seriously in diaries.
- Polished and updated often. A 4.7 rating, updated to 1.6.x within three months, and privacy selling points (local storage, on-device analysis, Face ID, optional iCloud). On Xiaohongshu these map to appealing lines like "no ads, no account registration."
- Timing. iOS's subject-lifting ability is now mature, so building this feature is cheap. Meanwhile "plog," "electronic journal," and "pretty meals" have been consistently hot on Xiaohongshu.
5. Differentiation
The differentiation lies in treating a sticker of the subject cut from the user's own photo as the basic unit of a diary, then adding free collage, Live Photo export, and a monthly flip-book. Traditional diary apps are text-first, journaling apps rely on templates and sticker assets, and cut-out tools don't do diaries; this app combines all three into a low-barrier daily habit. This is a necessary condition for it to take off, but not a sufficient one. The differentiation makes its material look good and spread well on Xiaohongshu. The volume actually comes from the seeding matrix: yoi (launched 10 days earlier) and a batch of overseas sticker-journal apps with the same theme haven't gained traction. Technically there's no moat, since the system already lifts subjects, so the differentiation is easy to copy.
6. Awareness and copycats
- Awareness: it's circulating in small circles. Seeding posts exist on Xiaohongshu and Douyin, one with 39k likes, but media, X, and tech reviewers haven't written about it, no one has disclosed revenue publicly, and the developer hasn't posted data on X or Jike (none found).
- Copycats: none directly cloning it in the China store so far. iPlog (launched 2026-10-31, "photo collage, sticker making, collage journal") is close in direction but hasn't gained traction, so it doesn't count as a clear copy. Overseas, a wave of sticker journal apps including Stikoo, Niello, Vinette, Stickoi, and Jou appeared around 2026-07, which looks more like the same idea surfacing at once than copying.
7. What to borrow
- The product lets users produce a finished piece that is already attractive and shareable (collage pages, Live Photos, flip-book videos), so the content channel has ready-made material.
- The Xiaohongshu seeding formula: pick 3 selling points, use framing like "an app you won't want to delete," add tags like #小众软件 #宝藏软件, post repeatedly from multiple accounts, and bet that one post goes viral.
- Subscription and one-time lifetime purchase coexist, catering to China-store users who dislike subscriptions. Just getting into the top 150 or so of the China store's Lifestyle Top Grossing chart brings extra exposure from the chart and "customers also bought" placements.
8. What's uncertain
- Whether the seeding accounts are the developer's own matrix or outsourced KOC campaigns, how much was spent, and whether Dou+ / Xiaohongshu boosts were used: none verified.
- How steep the rating growth was before and after the mid-October viral post: the database only started recording from 10-28, so this stretch of data is missing.
- Whether the name collision with the "翻翻" print app was deliberate or coincidental.
- Actual revenue and conversion rate are unknown; the chart position only suggests small-scale earnings.
- Whether the five-language localization for overseas markets was promoted: the US store currently shows only 4 ratings.
