Footage of a stadium crowd leaving after a match earns 20,000 views: in a Turkish town of 800k people, someone built an app for checking things before you head out

What it is A travel dashboard for Trabzon, a city in Turkey: live municipal camera feeds, real-time travel times and alerts on main roads, airport flights, plateau weather, and on-duty pharmacies. Free with ads, plus monthly and yearly subscriptions.

Why it took off Locals are fed up with traffic, and the information they need was scattered across municipal web pages, the official bus app and maps. This app puts it all in one place and sends alerts. On top of that: cheap Meta video ads in a small city, and TikTok posts of post-match stadium footage.

BHow you could copy it Pick a mid-sized city with bad traffic and public camera feeds, and follow the same recipe: cameras plus route times plus alerts. Use free local must-have features to attract users, and sell subscriptions to remove ads. At launch, run local Meta video ads and film local events using the app's own camera footage.

Grade B: the playbook is clear, the data is public, and almost nobody knows about it, with no copycats in the same city. But each city is tiny, revenue will likely be low, you have to launch and maintain it city by city, and municipal camera feeds can be shut off at any time. It's a small business. Few people know about it yet

In late July 2026, an indie developer named Mehmet Kaplan launched an app in Trabzon, a city on Turkey's Black Sea coast: municipal camera livestreams, real-time travel times on main roads, airport flights, plateau weather and on-duty pharmacies, all in one screen. Three months later it ranked #22 in the free Navigation chart on the Turkish App Store, ahead of Waze and Istanbul's official city app. All of the data is public. The growth came from paying for ads in a small city.

Nov 1: the crowd outside the stadium

Nov 1, Trabzonspor won at home. The app's TikTok account @trabzontrafik posted a video showing fans leaving the stadium from the app's camera feed, captioned with one line: "Trabzonspor won, and fans are leaving the stadium." By Nov 6 the post had 19,980 views and 399 likes (TikTok, checked 11-06).

The Sep 6 post used the same approach: after a match against Gençlerbirliği, it showed how jammed the roads around PaparaPark Stadium got. 5,099 views, 265 likes. On Nov 5 it posted again: "How do you think Trabzon's traffic should be fixed? Let us know in the comments."

The account has 10 videos and fewer than 2,000 followers. Its content is the thing locals complain about every day: traffic.

What it is

The first line of the store page reads "Trabzon'da yola çıkmadan önce bakılacak tek uygulama", the only app to check before going out in Trabzon. The next line: "Is the seaside road jammed, is Değirmendere crowded, is it snowing on the plateau under Sultanmurat? See it all on one screen, in real time."

It includes:

  • City camera livestreams: the city government already publishes live MOBESE camera feeds on its website. The app pulls these streams in, with 23 camera locations listed on the official site.
  • Route travel times: expected travel times for 15 main roads and how much slower than usual they are. You can set a delay threshold and get an alert when it's exceeded. There's also a desktop widget.
  • Airport flights: Trabzon airport departures and arrivals, delays, gates and baggage carousels.
  • Plateau weather: weather and snow-chain advisories for 15 highland plateaus (yayla). Summer visitors and people returning home go there; in winter you need snow chains.
  • On-duty pharmacies: which pharmacies are open tonight in each district.

Free with ads. Premium is ₺29.99 per month or ₺199.99 per year (3-day trial). You pay for ad removal, cameras from 4 more roads, unlimited route alerts and highland forecasts. Available on both iOS and Android.

Turkish App Store, 10-28 to 11-06.

The volume is small. iOS has 170 ratings in total with an average of 4.54, up +7 over the last 19 days, roughly two or three a day. Google Play shows 5K+ downloads and 125 ratings (Play page, 11-06). It has also appeared on navigation charts in Germany, Austria, the Netherlands and Belgium, where it has 0 to 3 ratings. Likely people from Trabzon living in Europe are using it (inference).

Discount the grossing chart: the bar for Turkish Navigation grossing is low. Ranking 21–58 only means people are paying, which could be a few subscriptions a day (estimate). It has never disclosed revenue.

It ships updates fast. Launched in Jul 30; by Oct 24 it was on version 12.1, and reviews mention 3.0, 6.0, 7.6, 9.4, 10.3, 11.3 along the way, roughly one release a week.

Why this one

The demand is daily, and only locals have it. Trabzon is a long, narrow coastal city. Its main roads are basically the seaside road and the Değirmendere road, and Değirmendere is getting an elevated road under construction. Posts like "Trabzon'da trafik çilesi" (Trabzon's traffic torment) keep appearing on local Instagram and TikTok. Checking the roads before heading out is something people do every day.

It brings scattered things together. Checking the cameras used to mean the municipal website, which is hard to use on a phone. The official Trabzon Ulaşım app handles bus cards and arrival times. Google Maps and Yandex have general traffic data but no live footage, and nothing on plateau snow or on-duty pharmacies. This app combines all of it and adds push alerts. Reviews include "Trabzon'un ihtiyacı olan uygulama" (the app Trabzon needs) and "Trafiği önceden bildirim atması güzel" (nice that it warns you about traffic ahead of time).

The timing was right. It launched in late July, just as plateau tourism peaked and people came home from elsewhere. From September Trabzonspor's home matches started, and footage of the crowd leaving after games spreads on its own. Once winter arrived and the plateau got snow, the app had another use case.

Paid acquisition. On the TikTok profile's download page, the App Store link carries ct=meta and the Play link carries utm_source=meta&utm_medium=video. That's attribution tagging for Meta video ads, so the app is running video ads on Facebook / Instagram. Two TikTok sales videos got huge views and few likes: Sep 22 "Want to watch Trabzon live in an app? Link in bio" 23,741 views, 30 likes; Aug 17 a feature demo 15,024 views, 34 likes. Like rates of 0.1–0.2%, versus 2–5% on its match-footage videos. That gap looks like boosted reach (inference). A local Facebook fan page, "Trabzonfacefan", also posted the same line with a download link.

Ads are cheap in small cities, and no one in the category is buying them there.

Who it's competing with

CompetitorsWhat it isHow it differs
Trabzon Ulaşım (official city app)Bus app, launched 2017; 421 iOS ratings, 350K downloads on PlayHandles bus cards and arrival times; does not cover driving, cameras or flights

Canlı Mobese Şehir KameralarıiOS, nationwide camera collection, 12 ratingsNot focused on one city; no traffic data
Google Maps / Yandex / WazeNavigation free chart #1, #4, #16General traffic data; no local footage or local information

On iOS there is no second app focused only on Trabzon with this many features. I haven't seen its developer, or anyone else, bring this model to another city. No media coverage, no discussion on X. Only locals on TikTok and Facebook in Trabzon seem to have noticed it.

What users complain about

Free first, paid later. August's reviews were all short five-star messages with no mention of ads. Starting around Sep 10 with version 10.1, one-star reviews began to appear:

  • "Reklam var" (there are ads), 9-10.
  • "Why do Trabzon's apps have ads? Learn from İBB's app", 9-16. Compared against the Istanbul city government's free, ad-free app.
  • "Parama yazık" (wasted money): "Most of the cameras are broken, and on match days they don't show the area around Akyazı stadium. Are we paying to watch empty roads?" 9-19.
  • "The roads in Akçaabat and Söğütlü are neglected, and the app doesn't have them", 9-16. (The official site has now added Akçaabat.)

The bad reviews cluster around two things: unstable cameras and free users seeing ads. Anyone who copies this will hit the same two problems.

If it were you

Verdict: This playbook can be copied, and it can move to other cities and countries. But each city is small, so you have to advertise and maintain data sources one city at a time. Even if it works, it stays a small business (inferred).

Who it suits: One or two people who live in or know a mid-sized city with heavy traffic, where the municipality has published its cameras, and who can build for iOS and Android and spend a few hundred dollars on Meta to test locally. In Turkey, 30 metropolitan municipalities (büyükşehir) have published MOBESE or city cameras, and even districts under Trabzon like Akçaabat and Yomra have live feed pages. In other countries, first check whether public camera and road data exists.

Who it doesn't suit: People hoping for a big market. A single city caps out at a few thousand to a few tens of thousands of users. The camera streams are pulled directly from the municipality, so if they change their interface, everything breaks. The app also doesn't explain where its travel-time data comes from or whether that use is compliant.

How to build it: Pick one city and put "the things you check before heading out" into one app: cameras, main-road travel times, route-based alerts, and a home-screen widget. Add one or two things only that city has (here, high-plateau snow conditions and on-duty pharmacies; another city might have ferries, bridges, or tourist crowd levels). Free features like on-duty pharmacies, which people need often, bring users in. Ad-free use, multi-camera split views, and premium forecasts go into the subscription. Don't add ads too early; build ratings first. From day one, detect and replace dead cameras, or every one-star review will be about that.

How to get users: Right after launch, run local Meta video ads, with attribution parameters on the download links. Open a local TikTok account and use the app's own camera footage to film local events: stadium crowds after a match, traffic jams in heavy rain, the first snowfall. Then get local Facebook big pages to share it. Name the app "city name + traffic + live cameras" so the keywords carry it; small cities have little competition for those terms.

Deadline: For Turkey, there are two demand peaks, winter (snow on the plateaus, worse roads) and next summer's high-plateau season. Launch before winter sets in or before June 2027. The biggest variable is the developer himself: he has shipped 12 versions in three months. The day he copies the template to Turkey's other big cities, the open slots are gone.

Signs you've read it wrong: (1) It falls out of the top 50 on the Turkey Navigation Free chart and its rating growth stays at one or two a day, which means one city's demand can't sustain it; (2) Mehmet Kaplan or someone else launches more than 3 clones in other cities within 3 months, which means the position is being taken; (3) The Trabzon municipality shuts down or restricts external access to its cameras, and the data foundation of this model disappears.

Trabzon Trafik & Canlı Kamera (iOS id6794071691) research report

Research date 2026-11-06. Data sources: appstore library (2026-10-28 to 11-06), Apple lookup / review RSS, Google Play page, TikHub (TikTok), Jina web search and page extraction. Anything unverified is marked "unverified".

One line

This is a "city dashboard" app for Trabzon (about 800k people in the province), a city on Turkey's Black Sea coast. It puts the municipality's public MOBESE camera live feeds, real-time travel times and delays for 15 routes, Trabzon Airport (TZX) flights, weather and snow-chain alerts for 15 high plateaus (yayla), and on-duty pharmacies by district into one interface. Built by independent developer Mehmet Kaplan, 2026-07-30 launch, on both iOS and Android. Free with ads; Premium is ₺29.99/month or ₺199.99/year (3-day trial). Paid features: ad removal, watching 4 road cameras at once, unlimited route alerts, and plateau weather forecasts.

Verdict

It works without scarce data. Cameras, road conditions, flights and pharmacy listings are all public, and the municipal website already publishes the camera feeds. Three reasons it works:

  1. One city, many needs bundled together: Similar apps either show only cameras (on Android, the Yerli Uygulama developer alone has 46 city camera apps), are official bus apps, or are general map apps like Google or Yandex. This is the only app in the city that bundles "the things you check before heading out" together, and it adds proactive reminders like route-based alerts and a home-screen widget.
  2. Paid local advertising: The download page includes ct=meta and utm_source=meta&utm_medium=video parameters, which suggests video ads on Meta (FB/IG). Several videos on its own TikTok account have high view counts but only 0.1–0.2% like rates, which looks like paid promotion (TikTok Promote). A local Trabzon Facebook big page also shared the download link.
  3. Content tied to local events: Crowds leaving after Trabzonspor home matches, traffic jams in Değirmendere, the summer high season on the plateau when Trabzon people living elsewhere come home, and snowfall on the plateau in winter. Each moment comes with a ready-made topic and demand.

In a small city, this has reached #22–33 on Turkey's Navigation Free chart and #21–58 on the Top Grossing chart (appstore library 10-28 to 11-06). The scale is very small: 170 iOS ratings total, and 5K+ downloads on Google Play.

1. Data (growth and rankings)

  • iOS rating count: 10-28 on 144,11-06, 169–170 (lookup shows 170, average 4.54 stars). In the last 7 days +19, about 2–3 per day (appstore library app_day). The Turkey store accounts for nearly all ratings; the Germany store has 3, the Netherlands store 1.
  • Turkey Navigation Free chart: 10-28 on 27,10-31, 33,11-06 on 22, behind Waze (16) and IBB CepTrafik (18), and ahead of Wikiloc, 2GIS, AMap Global (32) and Citymapper (appstore library chart_rank, genre 6010).
  • Turkey Navigation Top Grossing chart: 10-28 on 21,11-02, 24,11-05 on 27, and between 35 and 58 on the other days (same source). The Turkey Top Grossing bar is low, so it only shows that people are paying, not how much.
  • Overseas stores: best Navigation Free chart rank in Austria #37, Germany #111–172, the Netherlands and Belgium #100–170, and it has also charted in Azerbaijan and Armenia. Switzerland and Bahrain charted on Top Grossing (129–148). These stores each have 0–3 ratings, probably from Turkish expats in Europe, with very small volume.
  • Google Play (com.mk.trabzonehirkameralar): 5K+ downloads, 125 ratings, contains ads and in-app purchases, last updated 2026-10-19 (scraped from the Play page, 11-06). Not captured in the googleplay library.
  • Iteration speed: launched 2026-07-30; by 10-24 it was at version 12.1. Version numbers in reviews went from 3.0 at the end of July to 6.0, 7.2, 7.6, 8.1, 9.4 in August, 10.1 and 10.3 in September, and 11.3 in October, roughly one release a week.
  • How it monetizes (per reviews): August's reviews (3.0–9.4 versions) are all 5-star with no mention of ads. From the 9-10 10.1 version on, 1-star reviews start to show up saying "there are ads" and "paid for Premium to remove ads, and the camera is broken." So it went free first and built up good ratings, then added ads and a subscription around September.

Bottom line: there is no direct iOS competitor. No second app focused on Trabzon with this much functionality. On Android, only a single same-named app that just shows cameras.

3. Growth tactics (evidence)

  1. Meta video ads (confirmed): The download page linked in the TikTok bio, trabzon-sehir-kameralari.web.app/indir/, has the App Store link tagged ?ct=meta and the Play link tagged referrer=utm_source=meta&utm_medium=video&utm_campaign=indir. This is the standard attribution setup for Meta video ads.
  2. TikTok official account @trabzontrafik (confirmed), likely paid promotion (inferred): 1,987 followers, 23K total likes, 10 videos (TikHub 11-06). After launch 2026-08-17 posted 5 feature explainers in a row; 2026-09-22 "Trabzon'u tek uygulamadan canlı takip etmek ister misiniz? Link bio'da!" got 23,741 views and only 30 likes; 08-17 one got 15,024 views and 34 likes. Like rate 0.1–0.2%, while its organic posts (09-06 post-game PaparaPark traffic jam: 5,099 views, 264 likes; 11-01 Trabzonspor post-game crowd dispersal: 19,937 views, 397 likes) ran at 2–5%. A gap that size fits paid promotion.
  3. Local topics built from camera footage (confirmed): Using footage from its own app, it films the crowd leaving after Trabzonspor home games and post-game traffic jams, plus engagement prompts like "How do we fix Trabzon's traffic?"
  4. Local Facebook pages (reposts confirmed, paid status unverified): The Facebook page "Trabzonfacefan" posted the video with the same caption and download link. Another Facebook page (id 61594810255122) posted a video for "Trabzon Trafik Canlı Kameralar."
  5. Official site SEO (confirmed): trabzontrafik.com is a full keyword-driven landing page ("Trabzon canlı kamera", "trafik durumu", "nöbetçi eczane", "Uzungöl hava"). It lists 23 camera locations plus FAQs. But when searching "trabzontrafik" on Jina, it doesn't rank near the top; older sites like yogunlukharitasi and 61saat come first.
  6. Store search (inferred): The app name claims "Trabzon / Trafik / Canlı Kamera" all at once, and competition for those terms in a small city is low. It also holds free-chart positions 22–33 in Navigation, which gives it some chart exposure.
  7. Early reviews (inferred, no evidence): All 10 text reviews from 2026-08-01 to 08-22 are 5 stars and very short. Only about 15 of iOS's 170 ratings have text. This fits a "free first, prompt for a rating in-app" approach. No evidence of review farming.
  8. No press coverage, X discussion, or Ekşi Sözlük threads found (x-radar search "trabzon trafik": 120 posts in 0 days).

IV. Why it took off

  • High-frequency need that only locals have: Trabzon is a long, narrow coastal city. Its main roads are only Sahil yolu (the coastal road) and Değirmendere, and the Değirmendere overpass is under construction. Locals constantly complain about traffic on Instagram and TikTok (search results are full of posts like "Trabzon'da trafik çilesi"). "Check before you leave" is something people do every day.
  • Everything you need about one city in one app: cameras, route travel times, flights, pharmacies, plateau weather. These are things Trabzon residents and tourists (Uzungöl, Sultanmurat plateau trips) actually look up. Reviews say things like "Trabzon'un ihtiyacı olan uygulama" (the app Trabzon needed) and "Gurbettekiler için birebir" (perfect for Trabzonians living away from home).
  • Proactive alerts beat the alternatives: route-specific delay thresholds, morning and evening summaries, home-screen widgets, and Siri all save more time than opening a municipal website or Google Maps. One review says "Trafiği önceden bildirim atması güzel" (nice that it sends traffic alerts ahead of time).
  • Timing: Launched late July, right in the plateau tourism peak and the summer return of people living away. From September, Trabzonspor home games started, and post-game traffic footage has natural shareability. Once winter brings snow to the plateau and chains are needed, the app stays useful.
  • Paid acquisition plus local content: The paid side is Meta video ads and TikTok promotion. The unpaid side is post-game footage on TikTok. Paid acquisition is cheap in small cities, and nobody in the category is buying it.
  • Fast iteration: 12.1 versions in three months. Coverage gaps users reported (Akçaabat, Söğütlü) got fixed quickly. The site now lists Akçaabat cameras, and the routes include Akçaabat.

5. Differentiation

  • Compared with the camera matrix (46 Yerli Uygulama apps): this one offers a full set of info for one city, not just a camera list. Route travel times, delay alerts, and push notifications are what keep people around. Cameras are the acquisition hook.
  • Compared with the official app: the official one handles buses, this one handles driving and going out. The official camera pages don't work well on phones and don't send alerts.
  • Compared with big-tech maps: big tech gives generic traffic data. This gives specific footage ("see exactly how jammed Değirmendere is") and information only locals need (plateau snow, duty pharmacies).
  • Is the differentiation why it worked? Partly. Full functionality earned it a 4.5-point reputation and steady organic growth in a small city. But scaling from 0 depended mainly on local Meta and TikTok spending. The differentiation itself is easy to copy, since all the data is public. The moat is simply "built it first and built a local reputation."

6. How many people know about it

Not many yet. No public revenue, no press coverage, 0 discussion on X. Exposure is limited to local TikTok and Facebook in Trabzon.

VII. Copycats

None found. On iOS I saw no Trabzon-style competitors launched after July, and no sign of this developer or anyone else copying the template to other cities. On Android, Yerli Uygulama's city camera matrix already existed. That isn't copying, but it shows the "city cameras" format is already being mass-produced.

8. Developer

Mehmet Kaplan (iOS artistId 1875076197). He has 8 apps on iOS: Opia AI Photo Generator (2025-12,29 rating), LoveScan AI, Talking Translator - Opia, Front Back Camera Record, Zoo Clutter Chaos, Story World, and 2026-10-28 newest, the Turkish-language trivia game "Aklın Yolu Bir: Bilgi Düellosu" (lookup 11-06). The recall card saying he has "only 2 apps" is wrong. He's a generalist indie dev, and this local app is the one he's done best. His latest app is also in Turkish, which suggests he's turning toward the local market (inference).

9. What others can learn

  • The template: pick a mid-sized city with heavy traffic and public cameras and public data. Put "the things you check before leaving" in one app, add route-based alerts and home-screen widgets. Make high-frequency essentials like duty pharmacies free to drive downloads, and put ad removal, multi-camera views, and premium forecasts behind a subscription.
  • Acquisition: Meta and TikTok are cheap in small cities. Use the app's own camera footage for local hot content (post-match crowds, traffic jams, snow), then get local Facebook pages to repost it. Build the website as a keyword-driven SEO landing page.
  • Turkey has 30 metropolitan municipalities (büyükşehir), and many have published MOBESE or city camera feeds. Districts like Akçaabat, Yomra, and Çarşıbaşı all have live pages from their municipalities. The model can be copied to other cities, but each city needs separate ad spend and its own data sources.
  • Watch out for: broken cameras and paid ads are the main sources of bad reviews. One September review gave 1 stars saying "I paid, and most cameras are broken; they don't cover the Akyazı stadium area on match days." Others compare it unfavorably with the free, ad-free official IBB app.

10. What's still uncertain

  • Actual revenue and subscriber count: the bar for Navigation top-grossing in Turkey is low, so #21–58 might mean only a few dozen new subscriptions a day (unverified).
  • How much was spent on Meta ads and which creatives ran (I didn't check the Meta Ad Library, since our metaads library only tracks products on the list).
  • Whether the high-view, low-engagement TikTok posts were Promote boosts is only an inference.
  • Where the travel-time data comes from (possibly Google/Yandex routing APIs or another map API), whether it's rate-limited or compliant. Cameras pull municipal streams directly, so if the municipality changes its interface, everything breaks.
  • Android release date and growth curve (not in the googleplay library).
