"The 3-day trial took a year out of my account": sermon-notes app Vessel squeezed into the US Top Grossing chart on 71 ratings. The paywall makes the money, not the AI

What it is A Christian notes app that records a sermon or pastes a YouTube link to produce an AI summary, and can photograph a Bible passage to scan it. After a 3-day trial, it charges $60–70 a year by default.

Why it took off The product itself isn't new. The team copied the strong paywall and paid acquisition they ran on their first app. One converting user is worth $60+ on first purchase, so a small user base can still bring in tens of thousands of dollars a month (estimate).

CHow you could get in Don't crowd into the English market. If you go after it, do a Portuguese or Spanish sermon-notes app, copy the paywall, and use a small short-video ad budget to measure acquisition cost before scaling up.

C grade: The demand and willingness to pay are real. But the English market already has Bible Note earning around $200K+ a month, the faster-growing HolyNote, and 40 more clones. The product has no moat, and Vessel itself is declining. Only switching languages is worth a small test, and you need to be good at paid ads. Chatter in small circles

美国一位用户 9 月 27 日给 Vessel: Bible Study & Notes 打了 1 星,一句话:「The 3 day trial took a year out of my account.」(3 天试用,从我账户里扣走了一年。)

What it is: record a sermon, let AI take the notes

The first line of the App Store page reads "Never let a sermon or Scripture passage slip away again." There are four features: record live in the app during service and get a transcript and summary; paste a YouTube sermon link and get a structured summary in seconds; point the camera at a paper Bible to jump to the matching chapter; tap a verse to see its background commentary.

The seller is DUOMO APP LIMITED, registered in Limassol, Cyprus, with two apps under its name. Vessel is the second. The team ships fast: 11 versions in just over two months, the latest on 29 Oct 1.1.1, with release notes reading "ready for your next moment with God."

Pricing table (App Store US, 11-06):

TierPricing
Weekly subscription$14.99
Monthly subscription$9.99
Annual subscription$69.99 / $59.99, two tiers

The negative reviews show the flow: a 3-day free trial that renews into an annual plan by default.

71 ratings, so how did it chart?

Very few ratings, and they're growing slowly: global ratings 10-28 are 90, 11-06 are 98, adding just 8 more in ten days. The US store went to 66 with an average of 4.52 (71). Never charted on the overall chart.

On the US Reference Top Grossing chart, though, it sat between #48 and #63 for ten days (peaking at #11-06 on 63). It also ranks on the Reference Top Grossing charts in 23 other countries, best in Tanzania at #22, Kenya #28, Nigeria #29, Ghana #31. Don't read too much into those: the category top-grossing charts in these small markets are easy to get into, and a handful of subscriptions can put you in the top 30. The US matters most, followed by Canada at #50 and the UK at #57.

Few users yet a high rank can only mean each paying user pays a lot. One person who converts from trial to annual pays $60–70 on the first charge; choose the weekly plan and it's close to $60 a month. Sensor Tower estimates it at over $50K a month (relayed by Appy Pie, unverified). Bible Note, ranked #23 on the same chart, is estimated by third parties at $250K a month. Going by the rank gap, tens of thousands of dollars a month for Vessel is plausible (estimate).

The cost also shows up in the reviews. Of September's 4 1-star reviews in the US store, all complain about charges:

  • "Promised a 3-day free trial, and they charged me right away. This app is a scam." (9-12)
  • "Once you subscribe you can't cancel, they take a year's money. Apple won't help me either." (9-14)
  • "The 3-day trial took a year out of my account." (9-27)

Another 1-star review is about the product: 4 recordings, only 1 transcribed successfully, "the summary wasn't what I expected" (9-28). Reviews after October are almost all 5-star short phrases like "Acts 27 / Awesome" and "Truth / Wonderful." The longest one reads "It made reading the Bible much easier and makes you think about what you just read" (10-17).

Where users come from: paid acquisition, not word of mouth

TikTok's public ad library only shows ads targeting Europe. There, DUOMO APP LIMITED ran about 80 creatives for Vessel under the account VesselBible_ad, starting 29 Sep. Targeting the UK, with headlines like "Vessel records sermons and delivers structured notes so you can focus", each reaching under 1K people.

The US campaigns, its main market, aren't visible from outside. Still, several signs point the same way: there are no creator videos or organic content about Vessel on TikTok, nobody has discussed it on X in the last 90 days, no media coverage, ratings grow slowly, yet its chart rank holds steady. It most likely buys US users through Meta or TikTok ads (inference).

The economics work because of the paywall: acquire a user, and if he forgets to cancel within 3 days, the first charge is $60–70.

Why it moved so fast: the same playbook, run a second time

Vessel didn't start from zero. DUOMO's first app is the prayer and devotional app Duomo: Daily Prayer & Bible, launched in October 2024. By 11-06 it had 10,934 ratings in the US store and ranked #48 on the US Reference Top Grossing chart. The Android version has 665k installs, estimated by third parties at $100K a month. The same advertiser has run European TikTok ads for Duomo since November 2025.

So Vessel is a proven setup moved over whole: the same audience (English-speaking Christians), the same paywall (a 3-day trial converting to an annual plan, plus a weekly subscription), the same ad account, with a feature someone else has already shown makes money. The one that proved it was Bible Note.

Who else is competing: this niche is already crowded

AI sermon notes have not been a secret for 2026 years. Counting only apps with "sermon" in the name, released in the last 2026 year, there are over 40 (Margin, Gilgal, Sunday Notes, Velora, Shema, VerseTap...). Most have single-digit ratings. Searching "best sermon notes apps 2026" turns up a pile of comparison articles recommending each other.

Vessel isn't the first here, and it isn't the winner. In the last 7 days, its US ratings grew by only 2, while HolyNote added 73; its rank has slipped from #48 to #63. The extras it has (YouTube link summaries, photo scanning of verses, tap-to-read commentary) go unmentioned in the reviews, and Appy Pie cloned it with a single prompt.

If it were you

C: worth learning from, not worth copying as-is. The business is real: English-speaking Christians will pay $60 a year for sermon notes. But the English market already has a leader earning around $200K a month, a faster-growing late entrant, and dozens of clones, and Vessel itself is sliding.

Who it suits: a small team of 1–2 people who can run Meta / TikTok ads and calculate acquisition cost and trial conversion, ideally with an existing subscription app for the same audience so they can share an ad account and paywall template, i.e. copy DUOMO's path. Another fit is someone whose native language is Portuguese or Spanish and who knows the local church scene: searching by name, I didn't find an AI sermon-notes app with local-language traction in the Brazilian or Latin American App Stores (inference; Bible Note is already doing Korean, and other languages will follow).

Not for: people who only know how to code and have never run paid ads (no technical moat, Appy Pie can clone it from one prompt); anyone hoping to grow in the English market through SEO or organic store traffic (the dozens of apps in the comparison posts all ended up there); and anyone who can't stomach trial-then-annual-charge models that bring refunds and 1-star reviews.

How to build it: if you do it, make a localized version in another language. Portuguese or Spanish UI, and sermon transcription that handles local accents and the Bible translations people actually use (reviewers complain about having only 3 translations to choose from and transcription failures). Copy the paywall: 3-day trial plus annual plan. Send a reminder before the trial ends to avoid some of the "scam" reviews.

How to get users: vertical short-video ads, with the scene "phone on your lap recording during service, notes already organized when the meeting ends." Test 20–30 creatives in one country on a small budget. Scale only once acquisition cost falls below half the annual price (inference). Church Instagram accounts and WhatsApp groups in Brazil's evangelical community are a second channel.

When to go: launch and start testing paid acquisition before January 2027. New Year is the peak for Christians starting Bible reading plans, and if you miss it you're waiting for Easter.

Signs you've misread it: ① Bible Note or HolyNote launches a Portuguese or Spanish version and reaches the top 50 on the Brazil or Mexico Reference Top Grossing chart, and the opening is gone. ② After a month of testing, acquisition cost stays above half the annual price. ③ Apple tightens its review or refund policy on "trial auto-converts to annual," and this paywall stops working.

Vessel: Bible Study & Notes (iOS 6794259330) research report

In one line: Vessel is the second app from Cyprus-based DUOMO APP LIMITED. It does AI sermon notes: record a sermon, get a text transcript and summary, and read YouTube sermon links or scan scripture from photos. It's gaining traction not because the product is new, but because the team has a playbook already proven. They first ran Duomo (prayer/devotional, launched 2024-10) with a Christian subscription app, a 3-day trial that converts to an annual plan, and a hard paywall plus paid acquisition. They then carried the same model into AI sermon notes, a niche Bible Note (estimated $250k/month revenue) has already shown to be profitable. It has very few ratings (98 worldwide), but has held 48–63 on the US Reference Top Grossing chart for a long stretch, meaning revenue comes from a small number of paying users at high prices. The product itself is weakly differentiated, and this niche has had dozens of competitors for 2026 years.

1. How to read the data card

  • Launch: 2026-08-13 (iTunes lookup). It shipped 11 versions in just over two months (1.0.0 to 1.1.1, latest 10-29), iterating fast (App Store version history).
  • Ratings: 90 worldwide (10-28), rising to 98 (11-06), +8 over 10 days. US went from 66 to 71, average 4.52 (appstore.app_day; iTunes lookup 2026-11-06). Ratings are climbing slowly, so new downloads are modest, or users aren't being prompted to rate.
  • Top Grossing: On the US Reference Top Grossing chart, 10-28 ranked #48 and 11-06 ranked #63. Over 10 days it stayed between 48 and 63. It also charted in 23 other stores' Reference Top Grossing: best were Tanzania #22, Kenya #28, Nigeria #29, Ghana #31, and Australia #35 (appstore.app_day, 2026-11-06). Top Grossing bars are very low in small African stores, where a handful of subscriptions can chart, so those ranks say little about revenue. The useful signals are US #48–63 and the UK, Canada and Australia. It never reached the overall chart.
  • Pricing (App Store page): weekly $14.99, monthly $9.99, and annual plans at $69.99 and $59.99. Negative reviews point to a 3-day free trial that auto-renews as an annual plan.
  • Reviews: Most 5-star reviews are very short religious phrases, like "Acts 27 / Awesome" and "Truth / Wonderful". 1-star reviews cluster in September and are about billing: "charged for a year after a 3-day trial", "promised a 3-day trial but charged immediately", "can't cancel and Apple won't refund" (appstore.review, 9-04 to 9-28). Some also report transcription failures (9-28). This is the classic side effect of a hard trial-to-annual paywall.
  • Revenue estimate: Sensor Tower estimates $50K+ monthly revenue. This figure is relayed from an Appy Pie post (see section 4); we haven't verified it ourselves. For reference, Bible Note, also in the US Reference Top Grossing chart at #23, is estimated by screensdesign at $250k/month. Vessel ranks #50–60, so tens of thousands of dollars a month is a reasonable range.

2. Competitors

AI sermon notes is a crowded niche in 2026. Searching the appstore library for "sermon" turns up more than 40 apps released in the past 2026 years (Margin, Gilgal, Sunday Notes, SermonNote, Velora, Shema, VerseTap, Sermon Keeper, and more). Most have single-digit ratings. Only one or two have gotten big.

Bottom line: Vessel isn't the first or the biggest. Among the same batch of sermon notes apps, it still has fewer ratings than HolyNote and Sermon Scribe, yet ranks higher on Top Grossing (US #48–63). The difference is monetization efficiency, not user count.

3. Its growth levers

ChannelEvidenceConfirmed?
Paid acquisition (TikTok ads)Our tiktokads library (which only captures ads targeting Europe): the advertiser is DUOMO APP LIMITED (registered in Cyprus). Vessel has 80 creatives, with titles like "Vessel: Capturing Sermon Insights into Notes" and "Vessel records sermons and delivers structured notes so you can focus", under the TikTok account VesselBible_ad. The earliest ran 2026-09-29, targeting the UK, reaching 0–1K per ad. The same company started running European ads for Duomo in 2025-11-05, with single-ad reach peaking at 1K–10K. Another 12 creatives reached 200K–300K (no titles, ownership unclear).Confirmed ads running; European volume is small. We can't see ads in the main market, the US.

Where the money comes from: after a 3-day trial, it defaults to a $59.99–69.99 annual plan, or a $14.99 weekly subscription. The 1-star review saying "the trial charged me for a full year" suggests the annual plan is the default. If a bought user converts to the annual plan, first payment is $60–70, so paid acquisition pencils out. The cost is refunds and bad reviews: 4 1-star reviews in September alone are about charges.

4. How many people are seeing it now

  • The rumor going around: the no-code platform Appy Pie 2026-10-27 posted on X, Facebook, LinkedIn, and YouTube Shorts at once: "Vessel estimated $50K+/month, we cloned it in one prompt (Sermonfold)." The Facebook video only got 46 views. screensdesign has indexed DUOMO's developer (estimated Duomo $100k/month, 40k lifetime downloads); no single page for Vessel turned up. Sensor Tower and AppBrain have pages.
  • No founder has posted revenue, none on TrustMRR, no press coverage, no discussion on X.
  • But the niche itself is no secret: Bible Note is estimated at $250k/month, searching "best sermon notes apps 2026" turns up plenty of SEO comparison posts, and new sermon notes apps are listed nearly every week from 2026 9 through November.

5. Why it took off

  1. The team reused a playbook that already worked. Their first app, Duomo (2024-10), has 10,934 US ratings and 665k Android installs; screensdesign estimates $100k/month; European TikTok ads have been running since 2025-11. Vessel uses the same "3-day trial + hard annual/weekly paywall + paid acquisition" formula, and it's the same advertiser.
  2. Following a validated niche. Bible Note (launched 2025-04) reached #23 in the US Reference Top Grossing chart and an estimated $250k/month, showing Christians will pay around $60 a year for AI sermon notes. Vessel entered to do the same thing 2026-08.
  3. High price turns a few users into real revenue. It has only 71 US ratings, yet charts at 48–63 on Top Grossing: $14.99 weekly, $69.99 yearly. One converted user is worth $60+.
  4. It charts in 20 different stores, partly because the smaller stores have low bars to entry. In the Tanzania, Kenya, Nigeria and Ghana Reference Top Grossing charts, a handful of subscriptions is enough to reach the top 30. It shows the English-speaking Christian market can sell almost anywhere, but don't mistake that for scale.

6. Differentiation

Feature differences: beyond live recording, you can paste a YouTube sermon link for a summary, photograph a printed Bible page to jump to the passage, and tap a verse for background commentary. Bible Note and HolyNote mostly do recording and notes. But these features are easy to copy (Appy Pie replicated it with one prompt), and no reviews mention them. The differentiation is not why it succeeded. The real reason is the team already had acquisition and paywall experience and copied it into a proven high-price religious niche. By the numbers it isn't the winner here: rating growth is slower than HolyNote, which launched a month later (US +2 in the last 7 days vs. HolyNote +73), and its ranking slipped from 48 to 63.

7. Takeaways

  • Use one app to prove "niche audience + hard paywall + paid acquisition," then launch a second and third app for the same audience, sharing ad accounts, creative methods and paywall templates.
  • Before entering, find a leader already proven to make money (here Bible Note at $250k/month), then make small functional variations, saving the cost of validating demand.
  • Religious users will pay long-term for "something to take home each week." The English-speaking Christian market covers the US, UK, Canada and Australia, plus English-speaking Africa.
  • Pitfalls: a default-annual trial draws "scam"-type 1-star reviews and refunds; Top Grossing ranks in small African storefronts are inflated and shouldn't be taken at face value.

8. Still unclear

  • US ad channels and scale: we can't see Meta or US TikTok ads.
  • $50K+/month is Sensor Tower's estimate, relayed by Appy Pie, not verified.
  • Store search rankings for keywords like sermon notes and bible study.
  • Whether Duomo and Vessel cross-promote; team background (registered in Limassol, Cyprus; individuals not identified).
