The #34 French recipe app: two months, 1,000 installs, in a crowded category
What it is An iPhone recipe collection app that turns social video links, web pages and cookbook photos into structured recipes, then adds a weekly meal plan, shopping list and cooking mode. Subscription €4.99/month.
Why it's getting traction It hasn't really taken off yet: the French category's Top Grossing chart only needs a few subscriptions to make the list. It relies on an official account posting AI-voiced short videos daily, a two-day small-budget TikTok test, a few UGC creators, and a fairly hard paywall.
CHow you could follow it Don't copy a French recipe collector; that space is already crowded. What's worth borrowing is its low-cost acquisition: local-language short videos with AI voice and real screen recordings, a two-day small-budget test of three pain-point scripts, and pay-per-piece UGC creative.

Nyama is an iPhone recipe collection app from a small Paris studio that turns recipes seen on Instagram and TikTok into usable recipes with one tap. It appears at #34 in France's Food & Drink Top Grossing chart, which looks like traction in the French market. Digging deeper, two months after launch it has only 1,000 installs, and several French competitors 20 to 40 times its size already sit in the same category. Below: what that ranking is worth, where its users come from, why following it isn't worthwhile, and what its acquisition tactics are worth copying.
A post celebrating "1,000 people"
In 2026 Sep 27, Nyama's official Instagram posted: "Deux mois après le lancement, vous êtes 1 000 à avoir installé Nyama". Two months after launch, 1,000 people had installed it, and 2,507 recipes had been imported. The account had fewer than 400 followers at the time.
A month later, in Oct 30, someone in France left a 3-star review. She installed Nyama to compare it with the app she was using, and the first Instagram recipe wouldn't import because the post's caption had no recipe in it. "The other app had no problems. So I'm staying with my original app, even though it isn't perfect either."
Put these two things together and you have Nyama today: a thoughtfully made product with a small group of real users, but it's entering a category where users already have other options.
What it is
The developer, Winstell, is based in Paris and has only this one app on the App Store. It launched in 2026 Aug 10. The store page's first line reads: "You saved a recipe from a video, and three weeks later you can't find it."
The flow has five steps: send it an Instagram, TikTok or YouTube link, a recipe website, a photo of a cookbook page, or a block of text, and it extracts ingredients, quantities and steps; save them to your recipe book and tag them; drop them into a weekly plan; generate a shopping list automatically, sorted by supermarket aisle, that opens offline; then use cooking mode while you cook, one step per screen with the screen kept on. Quantities it's unsure of are flagged rather than invented, and data stays on the phone.
The French name is "mes recettes rangées" (my recipes, organized), and the English one is "Recipe Keeper & Planner", with search terms stuffed into the title. In three months it shipped 1.9.3 versions in five languages, and the website says an Android version is in development.
What the #34 Top Grossing ranking is worth
Not much. French Food & Drink is a small category with a low bar: on the same chart in Nov 6, #35 Jeannou had only 5 ratings, #36 CookShelf had zero, and #45 "Menu de la Semaine IA" had 7. Ranking 30 here probably takes only a few subscriptions a day (inferred).
Nyama's own numbers (App Store, 11-06): 131 ratings across all countries, of which 122 are in France and 9 in Belgium; the French storefront averages 4.6 stars. In early Oct France was still at 102 ratings (per 28), rising 18 in the last 7 days; on Nov 5 and 6 it added 5 each day, versus 0–3 a day before. Its Top Grossing rank has bounced between 20 and 122, its best being #20 on Oct 29; it has never charted on the overall chart.
One more detail: 131 ratings against 1,000-plus installs is close to a 10% rate, far above what typical apps get. It likely triggered an in-app rating prompt (inferred), which is why ratings grow more visibly than installs.
Where users come from
The official account makes AI short videos itself. Instagram @nyamaapp has posted a reel almost every day since early October, each labeled "Voix générée, écrans réels": the voiceover is AI-generated, the app screens are real screen recordings; some opening shots are also tagged "scène générée". The TikTok account @nyamapp6 has only 19 followers and 8 posts. Its Oct 2 and 3 photo posts got about 15k and 18k views, but only 4 likes, and the rest never reached 1,000 views. A gap that big between views and engagement looks like paid boosting (unverified).
One two-day TikTok test. In the TikTok ad library, advertiser Winstell ran only 25 ads, from Oct 9 to 10, targeting France only. Each ad had under 10k impressions and led to the App Store. Three copy variants were tested: "Arrête d'enregistrer tes recettes. Partage-les à Nyama" (Stop saving your recipes. Share them with Nyama), "100 recettes enregistrées, combien cuisinées ?" (100 recipes saved, how many cooked?), and "Ce soir, cuisine enfin la recette que tu as enregistrée" (Tonight, finally cook that recipe you saved). Nothing new after November. Looks like a small-budget test.
Hiring UGC creators to shoot product videos. In Oct 11, UGC creator @salome.creatrice.ugc posted a reel promoting Nyama, tagged "*Collaboration commerciale" (commercial collaboration). Accounts like this usually charge per post, and the footage can be reused as ad creative. Only this one was found.
No media coverage, and nobody has mentioned it on X in nearly 90 days. Its page didn't show up in the Meta ad library, but that doesn't mean it isn't advertising.
Who it's competing with
The pain point it targets is real: people screenshot and save recipes they scroll past, then can't find them when they want to cook. That's exactly why others already build for it. In Nov 6, the French Food & Drink Top Grossing chart's top 80 included at least a dozen apps doing "social video to recipe / recipe saving", with Nyama around #8 to #10:
| Product | Launched | Scale (French App Store, 11-06) | vs. Nyama |
|---|---|---|---|
| WeChef | 2024-11 | 5,204 ratings, grossing #9 | One of the first in French-speaking markets to do one-tap Insta / TikTok import, about 40× the size |
| GoomY (France, GUSTORA) | 2025-10 | 2,632 ratings, +129 in the last 7 days, Top Grossing #7; 103k installs on Google Play | Same idea, a year earlier, on both platforms, growing about 7× as fast |
| ReciMe (Australia) | 2021-11 | 2,203 ratings in France, Top Grossing #11; 24k in Canada | Global leader, running 983 ads on Meta, features almost one-to-one with Nyama |
| Yuma (French indie) | 2026-09 | 500 ratings, +160 in the last 7 days, Top Free #2 | Focused on weekly meal planning, a month after Nyama, growing about 9× as fast |
| Kooki (French indie) | 2026-03 | 123 ratings, +7 in the last 18 days, ranked #18 in Top Grossing | Almost the same size and speed as Nyama |
| Mezze | 2026-09 | 75 ratings, +7 in the last 23 days, ranked #16 in Top Grossing | Launched a month later, similar growth |
| Jow | 2018 | 48,561 ratings | Has its own recipe library and can order groceries from supermarkets. It's about menus and shopping, not saving. |
Further down there are also Osta, CookGo, Miso, and CookNest, global saver apps with French localization, plus legacy one-time-purchase recipe tools like Paprika, Crouton, and Mela. Since August, more similar apps have launched in French-speaking markets (Manjo, Daily Bite). The idea that the French market is still empty doesn't hold.
Nyama's pitch, local-first, offline, not making up quantities, and making sure you actually cook what you save, is more thoughtful than most. But weekly meal plans and shopping lists are already covered by WeChef, GoomY, and ReciMe. And a 3-star review shows that at the most critical step, import, it's worse than the old apps people already have.
Where the money comes from
The free plan allows 5 imports a week, resetting on Mondays. Nyama Plus costs €4.99/month or €34.99/year, with a 7-day trial. The paywall comes after users are already hooked, and it's hard, so people complain with 1 stars: Sep 8, "C tjrs pareil, monts et merveilles pour ensuite te faire payer" (Same old story, sell you the moon and then make you pay), Oct 31, "à la fin on est bloqué si on paye pas" (in the end you're stuck if you don't pay).
The paywall complaints show that some users do reach the payment step. But based on chart thresholds, its subscription revenue is probably small (inference), and the exact figure isn't visible from outside.
If it were you
C. Don't follow it into the French recipe-saver niche. WeChef, GoomY, and ReciMe already run there, dozens of times its size, and Nyama is itself a late entrant with no clear differentiation. What's worth copying is how a small team got its first users with very little money.
Who it fits: indie devs who already have an app and want cheap first users in a non-English market. Or anyone with an idea that's clearly stronger at import, such as reading speech and visuals from video instead of relying on post text, targeting a language market with no local equivalent yet.
Who it doesn't fit: anyone planning an "Instagram / TikTok recipe saver" for big markets like France, the UK, Spain, Portugal, or Germany. ReciMe is spending heavily on ads there, and most already have one or two early players. A reskin with a translated name will most likely land at #8 to #10, like Nyama.
How to do it: before entering recipes, search the App Store in the target country's language and count how many similar apps are in the top 80 of the Top Grossing chart. If there are more than five, don't enter. If you do enter, focus only on import success rate, since that's the one thing users will compare. That 3-star review decides whether an app stays based on whether the first link imports.
How to get users: follow Nyama's approach, which costs very little. Run an official account posting one short video a day in the local language, using AI voiceover and real screen recordings. Spend a day or two and a few dozen euros testing three pain-point hooks on TikTok at once (saved but never cooked, can't find it, cook it tonight). Hire one or two per-post UGC creators to shoot footage, then boost the best. Use store titles with the words locals actually search for.
Timing: there's no hard deadline. This category doesn't depend on a one-off event, so the window won't suddenly close. But new similar apps launch every month, and it gets more crowded the longer you wait.
What would prove this read wrong: Nyama breaking into the French Food & Drink Top Grossing top 10 by 2027 January and holding there, or its weekly new ratings consistently catching up to GoomY (more than 100 per week over the last 7 days). That would show its brand and "you'll actually cook it" positioning works in French-speaking markets, and that late entrants still have room in this niche.

One line
Nyama is an iPhone recipe-saving app from Paris indie studio Winstell, launched 2026-08-10. It turns Instagram, TikTok, and YouTube links, recipe websites, and cookbook photos into structured recipes, then adds weekly meal plans, shopping lists sorted by store aisle, and a cooking mode. The free plan allows 5 imports a week; Nyama Plus costs €4.99/month or €34.99/year, with a 7-day trial.
Verdict: it hasn't really broken out. The two signals that surfaced it were "#34 on the French Food & Drink Top Grossing chart" and "+18 ratings in the last 7 days." Both are low bars in a small French category: on the Top Grossing chart, several apps near #30 have only 0–5 ratings. The developer announced in Sep 27 that it had reached 1,000 installs two months after launch. The French market isn't empty either: GoomY, WeChef, and ReciMe's French versions are already there, at 20–40 times its size. It has reached its current level through the founding team mass-producing official-account content with AI, plus a few French UGC creators and a small TikTok test (10-09 to 10-10). The product is polished and it converts to subscriptions, but it doesn't have a clear differentiator.
1. Current data
- Ratings: 131 across all countries (data card 11-06). Of those, 122 in France, versus 102 at 10-28; 9 in Belgium, flat over this period (appstore library app_day). Apple lookup average for the French store: 4.62 stars.
- Growth: France +7 in the last 18 days, +30 in the last 20 days (appstore library app_profile 11-06). 11-05 and 11-06 each added +5, versus 0–3 per day before.
- Charts: French Food & Drink Top Grossing between 10-28 and 11-06 mostly in the 20–122 range, best #20 (10-29); Top Free best #41. Belgian Top Grossing best #26 (11-03), later down to #96 from #11-06. Never reached the overall chart (appstore library chart_rank).
- Benchmark: on the same day, Jeannou at #35 on French Food & Drink Top Grossing had only 5 ratings, CookShelf at #36 had 0, and "Menu de la Semaine IA" at #45 had 7. So reaching the top 30 on this chart probably takes only a few subscriptions a day, which isn't a strong revenue signal.
- Installs: Nyama's official Instagram post in Sep 27: "Deux mois après le lancement, vous êtes 1 000 à avoir installé Nyama". It also imported 2,507 recipes (instagram.com/p/Ddy_VNHCHi3)."
- The rating count is roughly 10% of the install count, which is high. It likely means the app prompted for ratings in-app. This is an inference.
2. Competitors (doing the same thing)
Among the top 80 on French Food & Drink Top Grossing, at least a dozen apps do "social video to recipe / recipe saving" (appstore library 11-06):
| Product | Platform | Launched | Scale (French iOS, 11-06) | How it differs from Nyama |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| GoomY (GUSTORA, France) | iOS / Android | 2025-10 | 2,632 rating, 7-day +129 (about 7× Nyama's), Top Grossing #7; Play 103k installs; claims 325k downloads in a year and 1.5M recipes | Same idea, shipped a year earlier, local brand already established, on both platforms |
| WeChef(Relentless) | iOS | 2024-11 | 5,204 ratings, Top Grossing #9 | One of the first in French-speaking markets to do one-tap import from Insta/TikTok; its scale is 40× Nyama's |
| ReciMe (Australia) | iOS / Android | 2021-11 | France 2,203 rating, Top Grossing #11; Canada 24,236 rating; Meta running 983 ads | Global leader doing large-scale paid acquisition; almost every Nyama feature has a counterpart in it |
| Kooki (Louis Astrieud, French indie) | iOS | 2026-03 | 123 rating, 7-day +18, Top Grossing #18 | Its size and growth are almost the same as Nyama's; a French indie dev in the same tier |
| Mezze(The Quest) | iOS | 2026-09 | 75 rating, 7-day +23, Top Grossing #16 | Launched a month after it, with comparable growth |
| Osta / CookGo / Miso / CookNest / FOODIE, etc. | iOS | 2025–2026 | Dozens to hundreds of ratings | Similar recipe-saving tools, global, with French localization |
| Yuma (Adrien Long, French indie) | iOS | 2026-09-15 | 500 rating, 7-day +160, Top Free #2 | Focuses on weekly meal planning, not a recipe saver; also a French indie, growing nearly 9× as fast as Nyama |
| Jow / Jowzi | iOS / Android | 2018 / 2026-07 | Jow 48,561 rating; Jowzi 206 rating | Has a recipe library and can place supermarket orders; it does meal planning and shopping, not saving |
| Paprika, Crouton, Mela, Pestle, Recipe Keeper | iOS | 2015–2022 | Dozens to hundreds of ratings in France | Long-established recipe manager tools, mostly one-time purchase, weaker AI import |
Verdict: this niche is already crowded in the French market; Recall's claim that the French market is basically empty is wrong. Nyama ranks roughly #8 to #10 among its French peers.
3. Growth tactics (where users come from)
- Official AI-generated content (confirmed): Instagram @nyamaapp has 392 followers. Posts are labeled "Voix générée, écrans réels" or "scène générée", meaning the voiceover and opening scenes are AI-generated and the app UI is real screen recording; early October it posted almost daily (10-08, 10-09 reels). TikTok @nyamapp6 has 19 followers and 8 videos. Of these, two image posts, 10-02 and 10-03, got 14,975 and 17,712 views, but only 4 likes; the rest are under 1,000 views. Views and engagement are this lopsided, which looks like paid boosting; this is unverified.
- TikTok ads, France (confirmed, small scale): In the tiktokads library, advertiser "Winstell" (registered in France) ran 25 ads only from 2026-10-09 to 10-10, targeting France only, each showing 0–1K or 1K–10K impressions, landing on the App Store. There are three copy sets: "Arrête d'enregistrer tes recettes. Partage-les à Nyama", "100 recettes enregistrées, combien cuisinées ?", and "Ce soir, cuisine enfin la recette que tu as enregistrée". From 11-02 to 11-06 it ran 0 ads per day. Looks like a small-budget test.
- French UGC creator paid partnership (confirmed): UGC creator @salome.creatrice.ugc posted a sales reel in Oct 11 labeled "*Collaboration commerciale" (instagram.com/reel/DeXcwqRKrVR). Accounts like this usually charge per post, and the footage can also be reused as ads. Only this one was found, so the scale can't be determined.
- Meta ads: No Nyama Page was found in the metaads library. But the library only tracks advertisers surfaced by keyword searches, so not finding it doesn't mean it isn't advertising.
- Store search: The app is called "mes recettes rangées" in the French store and "Recipe Keeper & Planner" in the English store, with keywords stuffed into the titles, so it gets some organic search traffic. The share is unknown.
- Press / X / Reddit: No coverage found; x-radar shows 90 posts in the past 0 days.
4. Why it got recalled / what's actually real
- Payment is real but volume is small: some users leave 1-star reviews complaining about the paywall (09-08 "monts et merveilles pour ensuite te faire payer", 10-31 "bloqué si on paye pas"). That suggests the paywall sits after the core experience and is fairly hard, so it converts a share of users.
- The product is well made: when quantities in an import are uncertain, it flags them instead of making them up; data is stored locally and works offline; the shopping list is sorted by store aisle and opens without a connection; cooking mode keeps the screen on; it supports allergen alerts, portion scaling, and calorie estimates; it has home-screen widgets. The website and store copy is restrained and has a brand feel.
- Fast pace: shipped in 3 months, hit 1.9.3, five language versions out, Android in progress (official site).
- Reviews show a capability gap: one 10-30 3-star review says recipes can't be imported from an Instagram post's caption, while the app the user previously used could. Against competitors like GoomY that emphasize reading video speech, this is a real weakness, even though the website claims it can "listen" to videos.
5. Differentiation
- On positioning it leans on "actually getting you to cook": after import it connects to a weekly menu, shopping list, timed reminders, and daily recommendations, not just saving. But ReciMe, GoomY, and WeChef all have menus and shopping lists, so that isn't unique.
- "Local-first, offline, no made-up quantities" is its more distinctive pitch and is somewhat useful for privacy-minded users or those in supermarkets without signal, but it doesn't look like the reason users come.
- A local French brand with idiomatic copy. But GoomY and Kooki are also French teams.
- Judgment: differentiation is weak, and it isn't the reason for its growth. Its current volume is mostly from "new launch + a little paid acquisition and creators + existing demand for the category".
6. What to borrow
- One person or a small team can batch-produce French short videos using "AI-generated scenes and voiceover + real screen recordings" at very low cost, and test copy along the way.
- Run a small one-to-two-day TikTok test budget and try three pain-point copy sets (saved but never cooked, can't find it, cook it tonight).
- On small-country, small-category Top Grossing charts, a handful of subscriptions can crack the top 50, which can be used as store social proof. But for judging the opportunity, the signal is worth discounting for exactly that reason.
- Set the free tier at "5 recipes per week, resetting on Monday", paired with a hard paywall.
7. Visibility and copycats
- Visibility: few people know about it yet. No press coverage, no X discussion, no disclosed revenue; Instagram 392 followers, TikTok 19 followers; the officially announced figure is 1,000 installs in 2 months.
- Copycats: none specifically copying it. It is itself a latecomer in this niche; during the same period the French-speaking market kept launching similar apps, such as Mezze (09-15), Manjo (KOPER, 08-02), and Daily Bite (08-07).
8. Uncertain
- No daily data before 10-28, so its growth curve from 8 through October can't be seen.
- Whether the two high-view TikTok image posts were paid boosting is unverified.
- How much was spent on Meta (Instagram) ads is unknown.
- How many creator partnerships there were and how much they cost is unknown.
- The absolute subscription revenue is unknown; based on chart thresholds it can only be inferred to be very small.
