TikTok doesn't pay Nepali creators, Avyan does: how a small team in Kathmandu pushed a short-video app to the top of Nepal's grossing chart

What it is A homegrown Nepali short-video app that looks like TikTok, built around earning money from your videos with payouts to local wallets.

Why it took off TikTok's creator rewards aren't open in Nepal. Avyan pays for views and invites, so creators recruit people to Avyan on TikTok for it. Then in October it started requiring a Blue Tick membership to post videos, and added boosts and live-stream coins. That pushed it up the Nepal grossing chart.

BHow you could approach it Go after small-country, small-language markets where TikTok and YouTube money doesn't reach. Pay creators per view through a local wallet and let them promote for you. Once you have volume, sell boosts and live-stream coins, but don't lock video posting behind a paywall.

Grade B: the opportunity is real. Nepal isn't the only market big platforms ignore, and few people know this playbook. But building a whole video platform and fronting money to creators is hard. Paid posting carries trust and Apple review risk. A single-country market is small, and the window closes once TikTok opens its rewards. Chatter in small circles

Avyan is a Nepali TikTok-style short-video app. The features are standard and the build is rough. What it actually sells is one line: you can earn money posting videos in Nepal and cash out to eSewa. Four months after launch, the Android app has over 100k installs, and the iOS app reached #44 on Nepal's overall grossing chart. The money mostly comes from creators who want to earn, not from viewers.

Nov 1, "Start earning with just 100 followers"

Nov 1, Nepali TikTok creator @kamalaghimire_official7 (218k followers) posted a video titled "100 followers ma nai kamauna suru!" (Start earning with just 100 followers!), with the tags #NepaliCreators #EarnOnline #eSewa, 74k views (TikTok, 11-06 viewed). She wasn't promoting a TikTok feature. She was promoting a different app: Avyan.

She isn't the only one. Search "avyan app" on TikTok and nearly all of the first 30 results are Nepali creators explaining how to sign up, how to earn, how to cash out, and what Blue Tick is for. @parajulimanju2's July 13 video had 160k views, @anushah2 (520k followers) had 21k on a July 137 video, @thapaniru26 (78.5k followers) posted from August to November, and the November 5 video had 125k views and over 5,700 likes. Around October 25–26, bigger accounts like @sumitra_maurati (980k followers) and @puzaapandeya77 (200k followers) posted in a concentrated wave, with captions that linked directly to the membership page avyan.app/verified. (Inference: this wave looks organized. Whether it was paid is unverified.)

Avyan's official TikTok account has only 2,465 followers. Almost all the traffic comes from creators, and they're recruiting from TikTok itself.

What it is

A For You-feed short-video app with music, editing, live streaming, and paid boosts for your own videos. It was released on iOS in September 4 under an individual developer account. The Android version launched in late June, operated by a small Kathmandu company called Invaito Technologies. The store description says "made in Nepal, built for everyone" and specifically names Nepalis in the Gulf, Malaysia, Japan, and Korea.

The product itself has nothing new. On Google Play it has 11.9K reviews and a 4.4 rating. The most-upvoted negative reviews focus on lag, heavy data use, upload failures, and a small music library: "The app is very slow, uses a lot of data, uploads often fail, and you can only use the few songs in the app" (Sushil Khadka, 9-08,19 people found it helpful).

Why it took off: big platforms' money doesn't reach Nepal

TikTok is huge in Nepal. On iOS it's 4 on the free overall chart and 5 on the grossing chart (App Store Nepal chart, 11-06). But TikTok's creator rewards program only works in supported countries, and Nepal isn't one of them. YouTube's partner program requires 1,000 subscribers plus watch hours. Facebook's content monetization was only opened to Nepal 2025 years ago, and its requirements are steep too. As a result, huge numbers of ordinary creators post every day on those platforms and earn nothing.

Avyan fills that gap. In August 3 it published its rules on its website: it pays Rs 20 (about $0.15) for every 1,000 valid views, withdrawals are available after a 7-day review, there's a daily cap on how many views a single viewer can contribute to one creator, and fake views don't count. Payouts go to eSewa, Khalti, or a bank card, with no PayPal and no foreign-currency card needed. That's something overseas platforms can't offer.

It also has a cautionary tale. In 2023 November, TikTok was banned in Nepal, and a local clone called Ramailo appeared, installed about 100k times. When TikTok was unbanned 2024 years later, Ramailo shut down quickly, and a post on r/Nepal lamented that "the first homegrown Nepali social app is gone." Avyan didn't play the "replacement" card. It played the "we pay you" card, so it can grow even while TikTok is running fine.

Where users come from: get people who want to earn to recruit for you

Pay per view, plus invite bonuses, and creators have a reason to push Avyan outward:

  • Tutorials and promotion on TikTok: the videos above with hundreds of thousands of views are the main channel.
  • Invite codes: Facebook and Instagram are full of template posts: "Join me on Avyan - short videos by Nepali creators. Use my invite code …" with a link like avyan.app/i/ plus a code. The official list of earning sources includes invites.
  • "Earn money online" YouTube videos: "Avyan App Bata Paisa Kasari Kamaune?" (How to earn money on the Avyan app) and "Avyan App Real or Fake?" Nepal already has a large body of content about "earn-money apps you can cash out to eSewa," and Avyan has been lumped into that category.
  • Long-tail TikTok keywords: on August 5 the official newsroom published more than a dozen articles in one day, like "How to go viral on TikTok in Nepal" and "TikTok Ma Views Kina Audaina?" (Why don't I get views on TikTok?), each one pointing readers to Avyan.
  • Overseas Nepali workers: iOS has 140 ratings in the UAE and 45 in Qatar (App Store, 11-06), which matches where Nepali workers are concentrated in the Gulf.

I found no evidence it's buying ads (not finding evidence doesn't mean it isn't). Local media coverage is limited to one UpaharKhabar article from July 20 with wording that closely resembles a company press release. International media and X have no discussion of it.

Where the money comes from: from "post videos and earn" to "pay before you post"

Ordered by App Store version history:

TimelineWhat was added
September 6–8Avyan Boost: pay to promote your own videos, with the largest pack at 2,000 points for $19.99 (official TikTok 9-15)
Oct 7Live-stream gifting. Coins are bought at avyan.app/coin by scanning a Fonepay QR code, which bypasses Apple's cut. It's clearly labeled "gifts only, not withdrawable."
Oct 11Blue Tick membership launched, with monthly and yearly billing on iOS and a 7-day free trial
From Oct 18The store description changed to "Blue Tick membership unlocks video posting." The Play update notes say "Blue Tick is required to post videos under 30 seconds" and "if video posting is locked, you can post photos instead."

The website membership page (11-06 to view): 3 months for NPR 1,399 (about $10), paid once by scanning a Fonepay QR code. The listed benefits are "Blue Tick," "post videos," and "100 coins per month." The early hooks for recruiting, "Get paid to post" and "more recommendation traffic," are now marked COMING SOON.

The grossing chart followed. It first entered Nepal's iOS overall grossing chart in October 30 (at #88), peaked at #44 in November 5, and was back at #90 by November 6. Nepal iOS ratings went from 1,350 at 10-28 to 1,437 at 11-06, adding 4 to 17 per day (App Store Nepal chart and ratings). The timing lines up with the Blue Tick launch and the move to paid posting.

The grossing chart bar is low. 1,437 ratings is already a lot for iOS in Nepal, while Khalti, one of the largest local wallets, has only 1,841. Around #90 on the grossing chart likely corresponds to a few hundred dollars a day (estimate, unverified). Most users are on Android, so its revenue there isn't visible here.

Users are already asking the hardest question: "Now I have to buy Blue Tick to post videos. After I pay, how do we know they'll actually pay us?" (user review on AppBrain)

Who else is doing it

I haven't seen anyone locally directly copying Avyan. The closest are web platforms like Draftlyne and Clippy, which also market "earn in Nepal from views" on TikTok, but they pay you for videos you post on TikTok and don't run a content platform themselves. Looking further out, Chingari and Moj emerged after India banned TikTok, and Southeast Asian live-gifting apps share the same structure. Avyan is a small, single-language version of that model for a small country.

If it were you

One takeaway: worth a try, but be clear about what you're really selling, which is the hope of earning money. The part worth copying is the cold-start move: go where big platforms' money doesn't reach, pay creators through a local wallet, and let them recruit for you.

Who it's for: small teams that know a small country or minor-language market, can take local wallets and QR payments, have built short-video or live-streaming products (or are willing to adapt off-the-shelf short-video source code), ideally with the founders inside that country's creator scene.

Who it's not for: teams with no local payment rails, no way to absorb video bandwidth and content moderation costs, anyone who can't stomach being called a scam for "paid posting," anyone who gets stuck in App Store review, and anyone who wants to build "a better TikTok" (Ramailo already showed a clone doesn't survive).

How to do it:

  1. Pick the market first: countries with lots of TikTok and YouTube users, where the creator reward program isn't open, and where a good local wallet exists. Check TikTok's official list of countries where creator rewards are available first.
  2. Month one, do just one thing: pay out by valid views, with a threshold of 100 followers, and make cash-out to a local wallet fast and real. Build anti-fraud from day one (per-viewer daily view caps, a review period).
  3. Give invite rewards together with "how to make money here" tutorials, so creators spread it for you on TikTok, Facebook, and WhatsApp.
  4. Once it's growing, start charging creators: boost credits for distribution, live-stream coins (via web plus local QR payment), and a verified membership. Don't do what Avyan did and lock "can you post a video" behind a paywall. That step is the one that wrecks trust most.

How to get users: the main channel is local creators' "how to make money on X" videos on TikTok. The cost is the view payouts and invite rewards you hand out. Add official-site articles to catch the long-tail "TikTok + country name" searches. A single round of posts from a few mid-to-large accounts can bring a wave of downloads and chart placement.

When to move before: the window depends on the giant. Once TikTok opens creator rewards in this country, the pitch is gone. The earlier the better.

What would show you got it wrong: ① Avyan's "Get paid to post" stays at COMING SOON, or Nepali social media starts filling with videos saying "Avyan doesn't pay". That would mean the model can't survive the trust test. ② Its Top Grossing rank drops out of Nepal's top 200 after the Blue Tick wave and never comes back. That would mean the money was a one-time trial for creators, and viewers and advertisers never came on board.

Why Avyan - Short Videos & Music (ios_6794521793) is charting

In one line: it's a Nepali homegrown "TikTok clone". What it really sells isn't short videos, it's "you can get paid for posting videos in Nepal." TikTok's creator reward program isn't open to Nepal, so Avyan pulled in ordinary creators who wanted money with "Rs 1000 per 20 valid views, cash out to eSewa." Creators, chasing that money, then posted invite codes on TikTok, Facebook, and YouTube to bring in others. By October it moved the money-collecting side onto creators (Blue Tick membership required to post, paid Boost for distribution, live-stream coins). That's how it climbed Nepal's iOS Top Grossing chart. Research date 2026-11-06. Data: our appstore library (from 2026-10-28), Google Play store page, App Store store page, avyan.app website and newsroom, TikTok search results scraped via TikHub, and Jina web search.

The bar on Nepal's App Store is low. On the same day, the overall Top Grossing chart near #90 had Marriage Card Game by Bhoos (a local card game) and WhatsApp. TikTok was #5, Facebook #3, Instagram #1. 1,437 ratings already counts as a lot on iOS in Nepal, while Khalti wallet has only 1,841 (appstore library app_profile, cc=np). So "#90 on Top Grossing" doesn't mean much in absolute revenue. Rough guess: a few hundred dollars a day (unverified). Most users are on Android. iOS is a small slice.

2. Competitors: who else does the same thing

Bottom line: general short video in Nepal is already saturated by TikTok, Meta and YouTube, and the local predecessor Ramailo died too. Avyan can survive because it sits on a gap the giants don't cover: ordinary Nepali creators "can't make money from short videos".

3. Growth tactics: where users come from

  1. Creators recruit for it on TikTok (main channel, confirmed). Search "avyan app" on TikTok and the top 30 results are almost all Nepali creators posting "how to open an Avyan account / how to earn / how to withdraw / what Blue Tick gets you": @parajulimanju2 7-13 with 160k views, @anushah2 7-21 with 137k, @sandipa_thapa0 7-30 with 86k; @thapaniru26 (78.5k followers) has been posting from August to November, 11-05 with 123k views and 5,654 likes. The official TikTok account @avyan.app has only 2,462 followers and 44 posts. Most of the traffic comes from creators; the official account itself barely drives any. The irony: it's recruiting TikTok's own people on TikTok.
  2. Invite-code virality (confirmed). Facebook and Instagram are full of templated posts: "Join me on Avyan - short videos by Nepali creators. Use my invite code …", with links in the format avyan.app/i/<code>. Official coverage lists "referral programs" as a revenue source: inviting people also pays.
  3. "Make money online" YouTube tutorials (confirmed). For example "Avyan App Bata Paisa Kasari Kamaune? 1000 Views Earning", "Avyan App Real or Fake?", "Tiktok Jastai New Nepali App Avyan". Nepal already has a large "eSewa earning app" content ecosystem, and Avyan got filed into that category.
  4. SEO content farm (confirmed). On Aug 5, avyan.app/newsroom published more than a dozen articles in a single day targeting "TikTok Nepal" long-tail keywords ("How to Go Viral on TikTok in Nepal", "TikTok Ma Views Kina Audaina?", "Best Time to Post on TikTok in Nepal"), including romanized Nepali titles, funneling traffic back to Avyan.
  5. Local media advertorial (confirmed). The UpaharKhabar piece "Nepal's Homegrown Short-Video Platform Avyan Aims to Transform Creator Economy" from 2026-07-20 is entirely the company's line. There is also a creator event / podcast (clips on Facebook), but I didn't verify the details.
  6. Overseas migrant workers (confirmed, but small). The store description explicitly says "In Nepal, the Gulf, Malaysia, Japan, Korea, Australia, the UK or the US". iOS has 140 ratings in the UAE and 45 in Qatar, which matches where Nepali labor sits in the Gulf.
  7. Paid acquisition: no evidence found. Our ad library only tracks products on its list, and I found no Avyan ads on Meta or TikTok. Instagram does show promotion for its own Avyan Boost / ads.avyan.app.

4. How it makes money (why it hit the top grossing charts)

Timeline from App Store version history:

  • Aug 3 newsroom announces creator earnings: Rs 20 per 1000 valid views, held for 7 days in review before withdrawal. The same viewer can only count toward a creator's valid views up to a daily cap, and inflated views don't count.
  • September 6–8 (1.0.47/48): iOS launches Avyan Boost credits, paying to push your own videos; 9-28 revamp spells out the "promotion goal".
  • Oct 7 (1.0.53): live streaming revamp adds tipping. Coins are topped up on the web page avyan.app/coin via Fonepay QR code (bypassing Apple's cut). The page states "Coins are for gifts in Avyan LIVE, non-withdrawable".
  • Oct 11 (1.0.56): Blue Tick membership launches (monthly subscription; iOS offers monthly and annual, auto-renewing, with a 7-day free trial).
  • Oct 18 (1.0.57) to Nov 4 (1.0.62): "Clearer Blue Tick membership options for video posting". Play's update notes read "Clearer guidance on Blue Tick access for posting videos up to 30 seconds" and "Added a 'Post a photo' option when video posting is locked"; the store description says "Blue Tick membership unlocks video posting". In other words, posting videos now requires payment.
  • On the web page avyan.app/verified: Blue Tick 3 month(s) NPR 1,399 (about $10), paid in one go via Fonepay. Among the benefits, "Get paid to post" and "More reach" are both tagged COMING SOON.

It first appeared on our top grossing chart on 10-30 (rank 88), which lines up with the Blue Tick launch (10-11) and the switch to paid posting (starting 10-18). So its money mainly comes from creators who want to earn, not from viewers: it first pulls people in with "post videos and get paid", then charges for "posting videos" and "being seen". Users are already questioning this on AppBrain: "now for video posting they are asking to take blue tick. How can we believe that they will pay later after taking blue tick". The most-liked negative reviews on Play focus on data drain, upload failures, a small music library, and on iOS being logged out every time you quit.

5. Why it took off

  • Timing / platform gap: TikTok is huge in Nepal (#4 on the iOS free overall chart), but its creator rewards program isn't open to Nepal; Facebook monetization opened 2025 years ago with high thresholds. Nepal has a large group of ordinary creators who want to earn from short videos but can't get paid by the giants. Avyan fills that gap, not the "TikTok replacement" gap. Ramailo already showed the latter doesn't survive.
  • Local payment loop: earnings withdraw to eSewa / Khalti / bank, top-ups via Fonepay QR. No foreign-currency card or PayPal needed, which overseas platforms can't offer.
  • Incentives make creators recruit for it: pay-per-view plus invite rewards gives creators a reason to share Avyan videos and invite codes on TikTok, Facebook and WhatsApp. The official article literally says "Share everywhere – Facebook, WhatsApp, Messenger". The official account has only 2,462 followers, but creators' promo videos reach hundreds of thousands of views each.
  • Monetization shifts toward creators: Boost plus paid Blue Tick posting sells the "hope of earning" to creators. In a low-barrier market like Nepal's, it quickly reached #44 on the top grossing chart.
  • Expats: migrant workers in the Gulf and Malaysia who miss home form a second user pool (140 iOS ratings in the UAE).

6. Differentiation, and whether that's why it took off

The product itself has no differentiation: the features are standard TikTok parts (For You, music, editing, live, Boost), and it's criticized for lag, data drain and upload failures. What is actually different is three things: (1) creator earnings available in Nepal at a low threshold; (2) local wallet for payouts and top-ups; (3) recommendations favoring local Nepali creators, so newcomers are easier to see. The first two are why it broke out. But the model fundamentally runs on creators' payments and expectations: creators pay (Blue Tick, Boost) → the platform pays a small view fee (Rs 20 per thousand views) → most viewers are the creators themselves and their friends. Whether it lasts depends on whether it can bring in real viewers and advertisers (Avyan Ads). With "Get paid to post" tagged COMING SOON and users questioning it, trust risk is already showing.

7. Visibility and copycats

  • No discussion in international media or on X (an x-radar search for "Avyan" over the past 120 days returned only irrelevant results). Locally there's one UpaharKhabar advertorial plus lots of tutorial videos from Nepali creators. Revenue isn't public and it isn't on TrustMRR. → Word of mouth in small circles (only among Nepali creators and the "make money online" crowd).
  • Copycats: I didn't see any local short-video app directly copying Avyan. The closest are pay-per-view platforms like Draftlyne / Clippy, which also market "earn from views in Nepal" on TikTok, but they run a different model.

8. What others can learn

  • Look for small-country or minority-language markets where the giants have big traffic but local creators can't get paid by them (many countries lack a creator rewards program). Cold-start with "local wallet payouts + low-threshold pay per view", and make creators your distribution channel.
  • Open the money tap on the creator side (paid verification, push credits, paid posting). That's much faster than charging viewers. Route live-streaming coins through a web page with local QR payment to bypass Apple's cut.
  • Use SEO to ride the giants' long-tail keywords ("how to grow on TikTok Nepal") and funnel that traffic to your own product.
  • Also learn from the risks: predecessor Ramailo died as "just a replacement". Avyan's risk is that paid posting may be seen as a "pay to earn" scam, and it faces Apple's review of "subscription unlocks posting" and of external payments.

9. Uncertain

  • Real Android install curve and revenue amounts (the googleplay database doesn't cover this package). What Top Grossing #44–157 corresponds to in money isn't verified.
